- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meissner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:18media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:22everyone. Reminder to please sign up to
- 0:24our newsletter. We are relaunching it this
- 0:26Friday with our first edition of Hit Follow.
- 0:30We've had so many sign up since I talked about it yesterday.
- 0:32I'm so excited. It's going to be a lot more
- 0:34interactive like I mentioned, and it's just going to be like,
- 0:37honestly way more value, I think, than what we currently
- 0:41do. So please sign up if you guys
- 0:43want to support and participate. OK, let's just get into the
- 0:45stories for today. So the first story that I have
- 0:48for you guys is Molly May is facing backlash for a lack of
- 0:53relatability while sharing her motherhood journey.
- 0:57Social media is coming for UK influencer Molly May over recent
- 1:01vlogs that she's posted where she shares her motherhood
- 1:04journey. Molly has a 2 year old daughter
- 1:06named Bambi with boxer and Love Island star Tommy Fury.
- 1:10So yes, there seems to be 1 main vlog that Molly has posted in
- 1:14which it seems like she really is not enjoying motherhood.
- 1:18We're trying so, so, so hard to stay positive and have like a
- 1:21really nice day, but feel like I just need to keep my camera
- 1:31running all day. So you guys like actually just
- 1:33see every single thing is a huge problem.
- 1:38Like Scream can't even get like socks and shoes on or just like
- 1:45anything. I don't care who tells me I'm
- 1:49out of touch with reality or like all this stuff that's going
- 1:51on on TikTok at the minute about like I don't care.
- 1:58Like I'm not going to not talk. I'm not going to not talk about
- 2:00it. I'm just not going to not talk
- 2:02about it. A little local farm near us and
- 2:04they've just. Zoe and family have just got in
- 2:07just to leave me to just calm down for a.
- 2:10Minute and that's unrelatable because she has everything right
- 2:14in our eyes. She has money, she works for
- 2:16herself so she can kind of work around Bambi's schedule.
- 2:19She has a very beautiful aesthetic life.
- 2:22They go on all of these luxurious vacations together as
- 2:24a family. So it feels out of touch that
- 2:27Molly complained so much about Bambi and her motherhood journey
- 2:31when she has so much. I've also seen people say that
- 2:34she might be struggling because she is trying too hard to gentle
- 2:38parents. Like she's is leaning too hard
- 2:39into gentle parenting. I'm not a parent so I'm not like
- 2:42across the technique so I'm not going to make a judgment on
- 2:44anyones parenting or techniques. But that is also one of the
- 2:48pieces of feedback. So okay to me I feel like Mollye
- 2:51daughter is 2. I don't know.
- 2:53I personally hear the toddler years are really tough and from
- 2:57what we know it does appear like Molly is very often a solo
- 3:02parent. Like I know she has a nanny but
- 3:04when it comes to the family unit and like her and Tommy together
- 3:07it seems like she is parenting by herself most of the time
- 3:11because of Tommy's career. Also kind of maybe his partying
- 3:14and cheating, but you know, in general, he's away a lot for
- 3:18work and partying and cheating. But I feel like from the
- 3:21perspective of us wanting influencers to be authentic and
- 3:26like share their real lives with us and like, that's what Molly
- 3:28is, right? Like she is a vlogger, she is a
- 3:30YouTube, she is an influencer. I see all of this as her just
- 3:34being open about her experience and how hard she is finding
- 3:38parenting like as an activity itself.
- 3:40In my opinion, I think the way she's talked about motherhood
- 3:43and parenting feels like one of the most relatable parts about
- 3:47her. It echoes so much what we hear
- 3:50in general from mothers all around the world.
- 3:52But yeah, like, I cannot stress enough, the videos like clipping
- 3:55this vlog, millions of views, millions of comments, like this
- 3:58is going so nuts. So if you're a parent, I'm
- 4:01really curious to hear your perspective on this, on like how
- 4:03you feel about this, if you think the criticism is valid, if
- 4:07you think it's relatable for her to share things, if you think
- 4:09it's out of touch, like all of that.
- 4:10I'm interested to hear your perspective because like from an
- 4:13outsider's perspective, despite all her privilege, I do see this
- 4:17as actually relatable content. Like I don't see this as
- 4:20unrelatable, but I imagine when you're in it, when you're a
- 4:23parent yourself and you're consuming this, you might feel
- 4:26differently. All right, the next story that I
- 4:27have for you guys, OK, we need to talk about the Sydney Sweeney
- 4:32American Eagle campaign and its backlash.
- 4:35There's just so much to unpack here.
- 4:37I'm not even honestly probably going to even scratch the
- 4:40surface. I feel we could do like a 5 hour
- 4:42deep dive into this campaign and what it means and what it
- 4:45represents and all the different ties.
- 4:47So I am sure there are going to be points that I miss here.
- 4:50This is going to be of course, like, you know, a mini
- 4:52exploration into this story. But Sydney Sweeney, she is the
- 4:56star of the new American Eagle campaign and the backlash around
- 5:00this campaign has been intense. So the ad shows Sydney
- 5:04auditioning for the commercial, filming herself with a
- 5:07camcorder, working on a vintage car among other things.
- 5:11The visuals are all very Terry Richardson coded, if you know
- 5:15what I mean. And if you know what I mean,
- 5:17then you know what A red flag that is.
- 5:19But the campaigns tagline is Sydney Sweeney has good jeans
- 5:25and a lot of the imagery is like zoom Inns and close-ups of her
- 5:29body and like pans all across her body.
- 5:32The vibes, I don't know, like regardless of I'm I'm obviously
- 5:36going to get into like the messaging and stuff, but like
- 5:37regardless of all that, the vibes are just like weird.
- 5:40They're like uncomfortable. OK, so the overarching criticism
- 5:44is that this whole campaign plays into popular white
- 5:48supremacist and eugenicist tropes.
- 5:51Obviously Sydney Sweeney has good jeans is a play on jeans,
- 5:55jeans like jeans your genealogy and then jeans like denim.
- 5:59And they're not even trying to make that some like hidden
- 6:01message. OK like there's one part of the
- 6:04where she's painting over a billboard of herself and it
- 6:08literally says Sydney Sweeney has good jeans like GENES.
- 6:12So this has not landed well. People are like what the fuck is
- 6:15this? And I don't care.
- 6:17I, I honestly, it does not matter in my opinion how it was
- 6:22meant to land. Like if American Eagle planned
- 6:24it like this, if Sydney Sweeney understood how this was going to
- 6:27land, it doesn't really matter. American Eagle is a brand that
- 6:30is literally about celebrating and endorsing America
- 6:34iconoculture and having a brand where that is like the entire
- 6:38premise saying that this is the image of the ideal American
- 6:42woman, like the woman with ideal American quote, UN quote, jeans,
- 6:47white blonde, blue eyes, big boobs.
- 6:50Like that is being presented to us at a time when everything is
- 6:56being filtered through the lens of the rise of conservativism
- 7:00and the threat of authoritarianism in the US.
- 7:03This isn't a dig at Sidney Sweeney.
- 7:05I'm sure we're going to get some trolls being like, you're just
- 7:07jealous. Yeah, of course I am jealous.
- 7:09Of course I am jealous of Sidney Sweeney and her hot body and her
- 7:14giant tits and her, like, gorgeous face.
- 7:17OK, That is not the criticism here.
- 7:20The people who are looking at this and critiquing it, like
- 7:24being jealous of what she looks like or wishing you looked like
- 7:27her has nothing to do with people criticizing this.
- 7:30And I do think Sidney Sweeney is one of those people who has
- 7:33become somebody that is like constantly criticized for no
- 7:36matter what she does. I think there's reason for that.
- 7:39I think she keeps making kind of stupid decisions with her career
- 7:42and like how she positions herself.
- 7:44I understand that. But this campaign specifically,
- 7:47like, there are so many things wrong with it.
- 7:49And it goes well beyond just people being like, well, I hate
- 7:52Sydney Sweeney because you cannot put out art or music or a
- 7:57campaign like this without looking at the cultural context
- 8:01in which that art or music or campaign was made, where it will
- 8:05land, how it will land, how it's published, all of that.
- 8:09And aside from like the cultural and political climate that this
- 8:12ad was released in, I think we also need to look at who is in
- 8:16the ad and who is behind the ad. So like I said, American Eagle
- 8:19is a very like specific type of brand with a very specific
- 8:22message in general, like overarching message in in
- 8:25general to be releasing this ad, but then choosing Sydney Sweeney
- 8:29specifically and putting her in this position to say this script
- 8:33and you know, to kind of be positioned this way, framed this
- 8:36way was a choice because it's not her fault.
- 8:39But Sydney Sweeney has absolutely been embraced, like
- 8:42really embraced by the far right.
- 8:45And I do think that cultural context should be considered by
- 8:49brands and advertisers in terms of how they position their
- 8:53spokesperson because Sydney's image does not exist in a vacuum
- 8:58and her public persona is actually highly political at the
- 9:01moment. So it's important to consider
- 9:03what message is being sent when you put her in a campaign and
- 9:07have her say a certain script or deliver a certain message for
- 9:10you. Again, I'm not saying Sydney
- 9:12Sweeney herself is going out there and, you know, spouting
- 9:16like far right rhetoric. It's just the fact that like who
- 9:18she is as a person, her image, her public persona, her likeness
- 9:22has been embraced by that corner of the political spectrum.
- 9:25And you need to think about that if you're a brand, you know,
- 9:27when you are putting that person in your campaign.
- 9:29I'm not saying don't put her in your campaign because of that
- 9:31because, again, that's not necessarily her fault.
- 9:33But if you're going to choose her, then what you are asking
- 9:36her to do in that campaign and the script she's saying and all
- 9:40that, it needs to have all of that context in mind.
- 9:43Shane O'Neill for the Washington Post said this.
- 9:46The most provocative part of the campaign is when she's talking
- 9:49about offspring and jeans. But Sweeney also has softer copy
- 9:53in the press release, she says of American Eagle.
- 9:55They have literally been there with me through every version of
- 9:58myself. There's a message about mutable
- 10:00identity there, and that could be extended into a vision of
- 10:04America as a place where you're not bound by who you are at
- 10:08birth. But they went the full opposite
- 10:11of that. Other major issues with this
- 10:13campaign that it seems to be very directly promoting the idea
- 10:18that Sydney Sweeney's body type, again, petite with big boobs, is
- 10:22the ideal. It's really like, oh, we could
- 10:25tell that things were going backwards with body positivity,
- 10:29but like, this is American Eagle really telling us, like, yeah,
- 10:32no, no, no. Like, we are like, we're going
- 10:34back to the 90s, OK. People are also criticizing it
- 10:37for using the male gaze to sell women's jeans.
- 10:41And I don't know, maybe this will work, But I don't
- 10:43personally think it's good marketing.
- 10:45A lot of people online have said they don't feel like it's good
- 10:47marketing. It feels lazy.
- 10:49It feels dated and almost kind of like offensive to the
- 10:52consumer. The other major issue I've seen
- 10:54discussed is that this campaign highlights the brand's problem
- 10:58with blue washing. So this is from sustainability
- 11:01creator John Paben on LinkedIn, he wrote.
- 11:04With the abhorrent American Eagle Outfitters advert making
- 11:07the rounds, now's a great time to talk about blue washing.
- 11:10While not as widely known as its big cousin, green washing, blue
- 11:14washing can often be just as insidious.
- 11:16This is when a company over claims on its social good
- 11:19credentials. For American Eagle, this
- 11:21instance of blue washing is especially astounding.
- 11:24That's because one of the company's key philanthropic
- 11:27initiatives is the Airy Real Foundation.
- 11:30Launched in 2022, the foundation aims to, quote, build confidence
- 11:33in women, and foster an inclusive community to make the
- 11:36world a better place for all. They support causes around
- 11:39disordered eating, self esteem, and body image.
- 11:42There's also the AE Foundation, with a special focus on youth
- 11:45mental health. To claim support of these
- 11:47worthwhile endeavors while pushing a campaign that
- 11:49exacerbates these very problems is the very definition of blue
- 11:53washing. Don't even get me started on the
- 11:55barely veiled eugenic undertones.
- 11:57And this note is important when you consider that the ad, which
- 12:01is hypersexual, also aims to raise money for the domestic
- 12:05violence nonprofit Crisis Text Line.
- 12:08OK, so finally, I wanted to give a response to people that are
- 12:10like, it's not that deep. Like, Sydney Sweeney shouldn't
- 12:13be getting this backlash. Like, she was just doing a job.
- 12:16She's just getting her bag. I personally think that Sidney
- 12:20Sweeney is often very infantilized.
- 12:23I think we see this like pretty white girl and our kind of gut
- 12:26reaction is to be like, Oh my God, no.
- 12:29Like she supports her family. She just needs money.
- 12:32She just know what she's doing. Poor thing.
- 12:34She is a full adult woman with money, fame, power, A-Team
- 12:42around her, OK, helping her make these decisions.
- 12:46And she keeps making very decisions.
- 12:49And I get it. Like she is in her bag.
- 12:51Like she is out here hustling. She is making as much money as
- 12:55she possibly can in this moment while she is so famous.
- 12:58And OK, like, that is fine. But I think we need to stop
- 13:02taking away her agency and assuming that she's not part of
- 13:07making these decisions as well. OK.
- 13:09And the last word that I have for you guys is that Tricia
- 13:12Paytas has addressed questions around her fertility.
- 13:16So since Tricia Paytas gave birth to her third child,
- 13:19Aquaman Moses, there have been a lot of people online, including
- 13:23her ex Frenemies Co host Ethan Klein, who have had a lot to say
- 13:27about her fertility. So Tricia has spoken openly for
- 13:30years on her platforms about how she has suffered from
- 13:33infertility and would probably not be able to conceive
- 13:37naturally. Obviously she then ended up
- 13:39having three children very close together.
- 13:42So now there is kind of this narrative forming online that
- 13:44she lied about having fertility issues for online empathy and
- 13:48clout. And obviously Tricia has lied
- 13:50about many things over the course of her career.
- 13:52So people feel like, well, that would make sense.
- 13:55You know, when she started talking about this, this was in
- 13:57the middle of her being like a troll and like lying about just
- 14:00like so much stuff online. So Tricia has addressed these
- 14:03allegations now in a new YouTube video, explaining that she got
- 14:06her tubes cleared out and that is what led to her being able to
- 14:09conceive. And I was.
- 14:10Infertile for literally like probably 14 years.
- 14:14I think 22 is when I actively was like trying to get pregnant.
- 14:17Have no shame in these videos. OK.
- 14:19I know there's a lot of reasons for people to shame me or judge
- 14:23me. I had chlamydia that I left
- 14:25twice that I left. It was basically undiagnosed for
- 14:27like a year. So it sat in my body.
- 14:29It scarred up my tubes. It was really bad.
- 14:31I had two different, I guess ultrasounds.
- 14:36I'm not I guess that's what it is that are like, you know, your
- 14:39tubes are really scarred. It's actually like it would be
- 14:41hard for you to maybe once I got into like different
- 14:43relationships where I was like, you know, maybe I want a baby.
- 14:45And also that they're just like, you know, like you could do.
- 14:48That's my first time with HSD test as like 3130 or something
- 14:51like that. And they're like, yeah, your
- 14:52tubes are really scarred when I was younger.
- 14:54HSD test is a test that like shoots like liquid through your
- 14:58uterine. I don't know, something like
- 15:00that. It's a test for infertility, but
- 15:02also like clears out your tubes. 95% of women like get pregnant
- 15:04out of it. Like anyway, since I got
- 15:06pregnant with my first two, I think there's.
- 15:08Some misunderstanding here between the difference in being
- 15:12infertile and being sterile. Like, infertility does not mean
- 15:16that you will never conceive. She was dealing with infertility
- 15:20until she got her tubes cleared, which essentially treated that
- 15:23infertility and made it much easier for her to conceive.
- 15:26And I think this just points to a bigger issue around Tricia's
- 15:30reputation in her career in general, even though she has had
- 15:33a bit of like a renaissance. You know, her reputation will
- 15:36forever be that she started her Internet career for years as
- 15:40like, a troll. And like I said, just like,
- 15:42lying about a lot of stuff or like embellishing a lot of
- 15:45stuff. And that will follow her now for
- 15:48years, even into conversations that are sensitive, like
- 15:51fertility and kind of much bigger than, you know, her
- 15:54online career, like her family, Like, all of that's getting kind
- 15:57of brought into this conversation.
- 15:59But unfortunately, that is like the consequence of those
- 16:01actions. And she's been open about how
- 16:03she regrets those years, how she acted online and stuff.
- 16:06But yes, that, in my opinion, is like what we're seeing here.
- 16:09All right, guys, Well, that's it for Mini Scroll today.
- 16:11Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 16:13Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
