- 0:01They told him he had five good years left.
- 0:04That was 15 years ago. He's still standing, still
- 0:08speaking, still living. This is living with Parkinson's,
- 0:12The good, the bad, and the reality.
- 0:15A podcast about what happens when life throws you something
- 0:18incurable and you fight back anyway.
- 0:21Hosted by Bryce Perry, diagnosed at 4015.
- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin. Picture this.
- 0:34You're reaching for your morning coffee.
- 0:35You're trying to start your day when suddenly your hand decides
- 0:38it's auditioning for Dancing With the Stars.
- 0:41That's my daily reality with Parkinson's and dyskinesia.
- 0:45It's unpredictable, it's awkward, and sometimes it's kind
- 0:49of funny, honestly. At least when it's not spilling
- 0:51coffee all over my shirt. Now, if you're living with
- 0:54Parkinson's, I bet you know that mix of embarrassment and
- 0:56frustration. Especially when those movements
- 0:59show up in public. And maybe you worry about what
- 1:02people are thinking, or you find yourself hiding at home more
- 1:05than you'd like to. Or maybe you're just wondering
- 1:07if this is what your future holds.
- 1:10If any of that sounds familiar, you're definitely not alone.
- 1:13Stay with me for this episode, because I'm sharing the raw
- 1:16truth about daily life with dyskinesia.
- 1:18The good, the bad, and yes, sometimes the downright
- 1:20ridiculousness. Plus, I'll walk you through the
- 1:2332nd confident reset that I use to turn awkward moments into
- 1:28I've got this moments. And if you stick around till the
- 1:31end, I'll tell you the story that completely changed how I
- 1:33felt while being seen with dyskinesia in public.
- 1:36And let's face this together, 1 unpredictable day at a time.
- 1:41Hey everyone, I'm Bryce. And if you've caught that
- 1:43opening, yeah, that's my daily reality with Parkinson's
- 1:47Dyskinesia. Today, I'm breaking down exactly
- 1:50what dyskinesia is, why it happens, and most importantly,
- 1:53the 32nd confidence reset that I promised you.
- 1:56Plus, stick around because the story I'm sharing at the end, it
- 1:59completely changed how I show up in public when these moments
- 2:03happen. Now, let's just dive into these.
- 2:06Let's now, let's just now let's just dive in.
- 2:11OK, let's start with the basics. Dyskinesia, what it is.
- 2:16A lot of people think it's just another word for tremor, but
- 2:20it's not. Tremor is part of Parkinson's
- 2:23itself, and dyskinesia it. It's those extra involuntary
- 2:26movements that show up years after being on medication,
- 2:30especially levanopa. It's your hand waving, your foot
- 2:33tapping, your whole body doing the cha cha without asking your
- 2:35permission. Sometimes it's subtle, maybe a
- 2:38wiggle or a twitch, and sometimes it's like you've got
- 2:41your own backup dancers and they're determined to steal the
- 2:43show. Now, why does it happen?
- 2:47Well, here's the quick science. It's not Parkinson's itself
- 2:51causing dyskinesia, but the way your brain processes dopamine
- 2:54after years of medication. The meds wear off, they kick in,
- 2:58they wear off again, and your brains like, what are we doing
- 3:01here? So it starts firing off signals
- 3:04in all directions and suddenly you're doing a one person flash
- 3:07mob in the kitchen. But here's where I want to clear
- 3:10up a massive myth, and one I hear all the time in the
- 3:14Parkinson's community. A lot of us have been told don't
- 3:18start levodopa too soon or you'll get dyskinesia.
- 3:21And a lot of people try to avoid going on a levodopa for the
- 3:25longest amount of time. But here's what the research and
- 3:29my own journey actually show. Dyskinesia usually pops up after
- 3:34several years on levodopa, sometimes 5, sometimes 10, and
- 3:38for some people it barely happens at all.
- 3:41It's not just about how long you've been taking it, it
- 3:44depends on on your dose, how often you take it, your age,
- 3:48your body, and even your genes. Now here's the big kicker.
- 3:55Waiting as long as you can to start levodopa doesn't really
- 3:58stop levodeskinesia. It just makes you put up with
- 4:02more stiffness, slowness, and frustration than you need to.
- 4:06Actually. Actually, sometimes in those big
- 4:09swings of taking a ton of leviope at once or letting
- 4:13yourself go too long between doses can actually make this
- 4:17dyskinesia worse. Although I always say meds on
- 4:22time every time, those gaps can actually make dyskinesia worse.
- 4:27Those big upswings, right? You're on, you're off, you're
- 4:29on, you're off, you're on, you're off.
- 4:32I'm telling you, it will make dyskinesia worse.
- 4:34So what really works? Well, here's the bottom line.
- 4:39Even finding that sweet spot with your doctor, Enough
- 4:42levodopa to help you live well and move through the day, but
- 4:45not so much like you're riding a roller coaster.
- 4:47And let me tell you, finding that balance is no small thing.
- 4:51You know, after about a year of taking my doses, experimenting,
- 4:54and honestly getting a bit frustrated, I finally felt like
- 4:58we found it. I actually felt good, like like
- 5:01the old Bryce again. And you know, to be honest with
- 5:04you, I probably even felt better than I had for a few years, even
- 5:07pre diagnosis, right? And for a while it was like I I
- 5:11thought, Oh my God, I'm actually get my life back.
- 5:13Like this isn't a big deal. Like this is going to be fine.
- 5:16But then in my next appointment, my movement disorder specialist,
- 5:19he smiled and he said, excellent, we found what works.
- 5:22And now I'm going to cut you back a little.
- 5:24Oh my God, I was so furious. I was frustrated and honestly, I
- 5:28was just completely mad. Why couldn't I keep feeling
- 5:31great? That's when my doctor told me he
- 5:33that's what he said, I want you to feel good, not great.
- 5:38And I'm like, what? Come on.
- 5:41And he said, because I want to keep you on the lowest possible
- 5:45dose. That still helps you, right?
- 5:48Still helps you get through the day so we can hopefully keep
- 5:51these side effects like dyskinesia away for as long as
- 5:54possible. Now that was super hard to hear
- 5:59at the time, right? But now I get it 15 years later.
- 6:03I get it 15 years ago. It'll be September coming up
- 6:07here. 15 years ago. I was pissed at my I'm like,
- 6:12this isn't fair. And I was mad.
- 6:14I'm thinking, what is this guy doing?
- 6:16Why does he what does he have against me?
- 6:18Why does he not want me to feel great?
- 6:20What has he got? What has he got against me?
- 6:2215 years later now and I think about where I'm at in my journey
- 6:26and my dyskinesia. Do I have dyskinesia?
- 6:28Absolutely. My dyskinesia is like my hand.
- 6:31So my hand likes to do its own thing.
- 6:33I'm like, I'm always, I'm continually rolling stuff in my
- 6:36hands. Like, I mean, I get the rolling
- 6:38tremor, like like rolling pills, but miners like I'm just kind of
- 6:41doing stuff and, and I'm waving my hands a lot.
- 6:44So I definitely get it, but I don't get it as badly as I
- 6:48thought. And that's 15 years I've been on
- 6:50levodopa. So if that's you today and
- 6:52you're sitting here and maybe you're got diagnosed or you're
- 6:55thinking you're being diagnosed or you're trying to hold back,
- 6:57you're trying to hold back and yet you're struggling day-to-day
- 7:01today. Don't, don't struggle, right?
- 7:05Just get enough in you so that your day isn't challenged, that
- 7:09you can, you can Live Today, right?
- 7:11And, and, and that's what it's all about, right?
- 7:13It's, it's, it's finding that sweet spot, not chasing perfect,
- 7:18but just making sure that you're getting the most out of your
- 7:20medication for the longest possible time.
- 7:23And let me tell you again, like I said, my dyskinesia isn't as
- 7:27dramatic as some people's, but it still shows up.
- 7:29And when it does, it's always, always the most random moments.
- 7:34I remember the first time I really noticed it, right?
- 7:37I was at a meeting at work, and I was trying to my best to look
- 7:39calm and professional. And suddenly my legs started
- 7:42bouncing so fast. Like it was bouncing so fast
- 7:44that I could have, I could have powered a sewing machine, right?
- 7:47Everyone in the room was trying to pretend not to notice.
- 7:50And me, I just tried to look like I was just really
- 7:53enthusiastic about the quarterly budget.
- 7:56Here's the thing, it's awkward. You feel like everybody's
- 8:00watching you. And you know, the truth is most
- 8:02people probably aren't. I used to feel self-conscious,
- 8:06like maybe I should just stay home on days when the movements
- 8:09weren't stronger. But if you do that, then you're
- 8:11letting Parkinson's steal away more than just your dopamine.
- 8:14You're letting it take away the days of your life.
- 8:18And honestly, sometimes I wish there was like an app like this
- 8:21app that would track like my best wiggle moments, right?
- 8:25And I had these like dreams that maybe had to go viral, like
- 8:27middle-aged man invents new TikTok dance like the levodopa
- 8:31shuffle, right? Like, So what do you do?
- 8:34Like, it's crazy, right? What do you do?
- 8:36How do you handle the stairs? The embarrassment, the urge to
- 8:40apologize for your own body? Like, do you ever get that?
- 8:42Do you ever like just want to like you're looking and your,
- 8:44your, your body's flailing or it's doing these crazy things
- 8:47and, and there's people beside you around you and you're like,
- 8:50literally apologizing. Like, I'm so sorry about this.
- 8:52This is just my levodopa or this is just my, you know,
- 8:55Parkinson's. Like really, we're apologizing
- 8:59to people for our body. Like, is that like a little bit
- 9:02insane? A little bit?
- 9:03I don't know. I think it is.
- 9:05I think it's a little crazy, you know, But here's the thing.
- 9:08For me, it comes down to what I call a confidence reset.
- 9:13And here is that 32nd trick that I was telling you about.
- 9:16When I feel those moments ramping up, excuse me,
- 9:19especially in public, I pause. I have to pause and I can't tell
- 9:23you enough. You take a pause, right?
- 9:26I literally stopped for just a moment, take a deep breath in,
- 9:33and I tell myself this is just part of my daily reality and it
- 9:38doesn't define me. And I'm not here to perform for
- 9:41anybody else. And then sometimes I even had a
- 9:44little joke like, hey, you know what, you should see my moves on
- 9:46a good day. The truth is, when I stop trying
- 9:51to hide it or overthink it, people react way better than I
- 9:56expect. You know, most folks are.
- 9:58They're either curious or they're just to be.
- 10:00To be honest, they're either curious or they're just too busy
- 10:04with their own lives to even care.
- 10:06And the people that do care, well, they're usually the ones
- 10:09who matter. The ones who want to understand
- 10:11and not judge. Hey, if any of this is sounding
- 10:16familiar or if you're finding these tips helpful, do me a
- 10:19favor, hit that subscribe button.
- 10:22I drop episodes every week. You know, all the real life ups
- 10:27and downs and surprises with Parkinson's so they to so you
- 10:30don't miss anything that you might help you or might help
- 10:34someone else that you love. Just subscribe, come along for
- 10:36the ride. But here's a couple more real
- 10:38life tools that I use, OK, I try to plan big activities for times
- 10:43when I know my meds are are going to be working the best,
- 10:45right? I don't obsess over it because
- 10:48life doesn't always stick to a schedule.
- 10:50And that's something that you're going to have to get used to.
- 10:52You know, life doesn't stick to a schedule, neither does our
- 10:54bodies have the time, right? But everything I do like even
- 10:58right now when I'm on filming this or I'm recording the
- 11:01podcast, I record it when I know that I'm going to be at my peak
- 11:05prime performance, right? And so you just have to like
- 11:09plan around it and plan through it.
- 11:11I've learned to laugh about it with the people that are close
- 11:14to me. You know, my wife's even started
- 11:15like giving me like a giggle meter, right?
- 11:18A giggle meter. And it's a score, you know, like
- 11:20out of 10 sometimes. And spoiler alert, I'm still
- 11:23waiting for the perfect 10. And that bothers me because I'm
- 11:26a little competitive. So that's the way it is.
- 11:29And here's here's another tip that that, that you should maybe
- 11:32think about that I'll give you. And, and this is what I do if,
- 11:35if, if I'm out in public, I always try to find a spot to sit
- 11:39or to lean right. So if I need to, right?
- 11:42And I focus on whatever I can control.
- 11:45If someone asks you know me about it, I just explained to
- 11:48them. I said, oh, that's part of my
- 11:49Parkinson's. And sometimes my meds make me a
- 11:52little extra wiggly, right? A little extra wiggly today.
- 11:55That's all there is to it. But this is something I want you
- 11:58to hear. And I want you to listen this
- 11:59very carefully. I know this might sound easier
- 12:03said than done, and you might be thinking that right now.
- 12:06Sure, easier said than done, and I get that.
- 12:10Trust me. I spent five years after my
- 12:12diagnosis trying to hide everything, right?
- 12:16If you're in that spot right now, it's OK.
- 12:18I've been there. And honestly, here's the thing.
- 12:22Honestly, I don't want you to waste five years like I did.
- 12:25I don't want you to waste one year, right?
- 12:27I don't want you to waste one day.
- 12:30Learn from me, take small steps, start wherever you are, and give
- 12:33yourself some grace. Dyskinesia isn't your fault.
- 12:37It's not something that you can just try harder to control, and
- 12:41it doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong.
- 12:43It's just a side effect. Yeah, like an annoying side
- 12:46effect. But it also means that you're
- 12:48still here, you're still moving, and you're still living your
- 12:50life. And if you take nothing else
- 12:53from this episode, let it be this.
- 12:56Don't let dyskinesia make you feel invisible.
- 12:59You deserve to show up, take up space, and keep living your
- 13:02story, even if your body decides to throw a few little surprise
- 13:06dance moves in and along the way.
- 13:09OK, here's the story that I promised you in the beginning.
- 13:13This totally changed everything for me.
- 13:16So Carmen and I were out for dinner, right?
- 13:17And we're out with dinner with friends and we're just having a
- 13:19great night. It's a great night.
- 13:20I'm feeling good, everything's going well, meds are working
- 13:24great. Out of nowhere, completely
- 13:27nowhere, my hand and probably honestly my entire arm starts
- 13:32going wild at the table. And before I can even get
- 13:35self-conscious about it, Carmen just looks at me and she says,
- 13:38she says, So are you conducting your imaginary orchestra again
- 13:42or are you just trying to be the center of attention?
- 13:46And the whole table just cracked up.
- 13:47I mean like laugh, like really laughed.
- 13:48It was like one of those deep belly break the awkwardness kind
- 13:52of laughs. But here's the best part.
- 13:55It actually opened up a real conversation.
- 13:59I got to explain to our friends what was happening and why it
- 14:01was happening, and suddenly everyone had a bit more
- 14:03understanding and awareness. And that moment, it didn't feel
- 14:07like the spotlight was on my Parkinson's anymore.
- 14:10It just felt like life. And it made me realize the more
- 14:14open I am, the less power dyskinesia has over me.
- 14:18The people who matter will always stick around, awkward
- 14:20dance moves and all. OK, here's your Brysisms of the
- 14:26episode. Your Brysisms with Parkinson's,
- 14:29your best dance moves show up when you least expect them.
- 14:32So why not just own the spotlight?
- 14:34Just do it. Hey, if you can relate to
- 14:37anything I've just shared, or if you got your own dyskinesia
- 14:39stories tips, drop them in the comments.
- 14:42I love to read the comments and I love a conversation and I
