- 0:00Speaker 1: Now throughout the year, we have heard from my next
- 0:03Speaker 1: guest on a number of occasions, unfortunately at different times
- 0:07Speaker 1: when there's been some pretty ordinary situations unfold at her
- 0:11Speaker 1: and her husband's wonderful shop out in Zacholi And well,
- 0:16Speaker 1: fortunately they have they've had a few situations of late
- 0:20Speaker 1: where any break ins have been stopped, and that is
- 0:24Speaker 1: because they've got Canine which is patrolling for them. It's
- 0:29Speaker 1: Shelley Lay on the line from Zacholi, IgA. Good morning
- 0:32Speaker 1: to you, Shlley, Morning Katie, Helly very well. Shelley, tell
- 0:37Speaker 1: us a little bit more about Jumbo, who's been patrolling
- 0:40Speaker 1: the area and helping you guys out enormously.
- 0:44Speaker 2: He is amazing, that's for sure. He's got his job
- 0:48Speaker 2: cut out for him. But he's been Yeah, he really
- 0:51Speaker 2: has been doing a great job and deterring at least
- 0:54Speaker 2: six different groups that have come since he started with
- 0:58Speaker 2: us about six weeks ago.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Now, well, I know that it's been like it's been
- 1:03Speaker 1: such a tough time for you guys in some ways
- 1:05Speaker 1: in terms of those various breakings. So obviously you decided
- 1:08Speaker 1: to get the Canine security onto it, and Jumbo's been
- 1:12Speaker 1: patrolling for six weeks tell us about some of the
- 1:15Speaker 1: situations that he's sort of had to had to help
- 1:18Speaker 1: with so far.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yeah, so, I guess the most confronting one was the
- 1:24Speaker 2: last one when there were three people that turns out
- 1:29Speaker 2: to be in a stolen car, came out started yelling
- 1:33Speaker 2: that they were going to kill the dog, produced a
- 1:38Speaker 2: metal object, and as Jumbo got closer, they retreated back
- 1:45Speaker 2: into their car and new he meant business. He is
- 1:48Speaker 2: certainly not a dog that you would want to come
- 1:50Speaker 2: across late at night with his handler there. So they
- 1:56Speaker 2: got back in their stolen car and took off, so
- 1:59Speaker 2: certainly deter that which would have been potentially the sixth
- 2:04Speaker 2: robbery on top of the four where they've already actually
- 2:07Speaker 2: gotten in.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Oh wow, Shelley, when did that most recent one happen?
- 2:12Speaker 1: That sounds like it would have been very scary.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Terrible case. That was actually on Friday night, so just
- 2:19Speaker 2: a week ago now. And look, the police were great day,
- 2:23Speaker 2: were there very quickly, and they were able to from
- 2:27Speaker 2: the car up the road and got one of the
- 2:29Speaker 2: offenders then, but there were three of them, so there
- 2:32Speaker 2: were two that weren't caught at the time.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Shelley, I mean, do you and your husband, think to yourself,
- 2:37Speaker 1: why are we in a situation where we even have
- 2:40Speaker 1: to have, you know, a canine patrol dog and his
- 2:44Speaker 1: handler there at the shop.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Oh my god. Of course we are at our WIT's
- 2:49Speaker 2: end with the expense number one. And my plan was
- 2:55Speaker 2: just sort of have this until we were able to
- 2:57Speaker 2: get roller doors installed, but at a very big stand
- 3:01Speaker 2: still at the moment because we can't get approval for
- 3:04Speaker 2: them to be installed because of the it's doocking the
- 3:07Speaker 2: fire exits, and if we do want to do that,
- 3:11Speaker 2: I need to put in an extra fire exit door,
- 3:13Speaker 2: which of course is structural. It's a massive job. So
- 3:17Speaker 2: I'm trying to deal with and find a work around
- 3:20Speaker 2: about that at the moment. So whilst I thought that
- 3:22Speaker 2: this expense would end sort of at Christmas time when
- 3:26Speaker 2: rollerdors were being installed, it's just going to keep on going.
- 3:29Speaker 2: And we do feel like we can't sustain this, that's
- 3:32Speaker 2: for sure. And as we've seen, if we didn't have
- 3:36Speaker 2: extra protection there, we would have been robbed at least
- 3:39Speaker 2: six times since the other four. So I guess we've
- 3:48Speaker 2: decided started to think of other ways that we can
- 3:52Speaker 2: try and protect the area and just make people more aware,
- 3:55Speaker 2: and neighborhood Watch came to mind, and we thought, we've
- 3:59Speaker 2: got an amazing community there and people do want to help,
- 4:03Speaker 2: and if we can just get people more involved, more vigilant,
- 4:06Speaker 2: getting to know their neighbors, knowing if they're.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Away, just getting phone numbers, and just been community minded,
- 4:16Speaker 3: getting in there and go, hey, I don't recognize that
- 4:19Speaker 3: kid that's in that backyard.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Or what have you?
- 4:21Speaker 2: Neighbored the more crimes going on than any police or
- 4:27Speaker 2: people driving past, et cetera. So we just thought maybe
- 4:30Speaker 2: this might be an additional way that we can try
- 4:32Speaker 2: and move forward from this situation that we're in.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I reckon it sounds like a good idea. I mean,
- 4:37Speaker 1: it's something that used to happen so often, like in
- 4:39Speaker 1: years gone by. There well, and there is still the
- 4:42Speaker 1: actual neighborhood watch, but you know, I think that communities
- 4:45Speaker 1: used to kind of keep a bit more of an
- 4:47Speaker 1: eye out for each other in days gone by.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Yeah, they probably did. And these days, you know, you
- 4:53Speaker 2: could live next door to somebody and not even say
- 4:55Speaker 2: hello to them because we're all so busy and going
- 4:59Speaker 2: off in our own little w world. But just even
- 5:03Speaker 2: if it initiates a neighbor going over to the next
- 5:07Speaker 2: door neighbor and saying, hey, I'm a member of the
- 5:08Speaker 2: neighborhood watch. I've gested that we meet. Get your phone number,
- 5:12Speaker 2: so if you're away and I noticed something, I can
- 5:14Speaker 2: give you a quick call. And that camaraderie within the
- 5:17Speaker 2: community is going to I think be amazing for us.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Aught. Yeah, well, I reckon, this sounds like a good idea.
- 5:24Speaker 1: So you want to try and kick it off from
- 5:25Speaker 1: early next year, you reckon?
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I was just thinking, and I've had an amazing
- 5:29Speaker 2: response already, messages coming in, people giving me their phone numbers.
- 5:33Speaker 2: They want to be involved. Just thought, even if we
- 5:36Speaker 2: met once a month at the plaza and just saw
- 5:41Speaker 2: got together, maybe we have a bit of a police
- 5:43Speaker 2: report on what's going on in the area and just
- 5:47Speaker 2: really getting to know your neighbors.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Well, let us know, Shelly, how it all goes. But
- 5:51Speaker 1: let us know as well, you know, from early next
- 5:53Speaker 1: year when you are sort of planning on having that
- 5:55Speaker 1: first meeting, and we will try to make sure that
- 5:58Speaker 1: you know that for our residents out iCal area or
- 6:00Speaker 1: even you know, around that area in Palmerston, if they
- 6:03Speaker 1: want to get involved, how they can do it.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Yeah, that'd be amazing, Katie. Thank you very much. We
- 6:09Speaker 2: appreciate that.
- 6:10Speaker 1: No worries at all, and thank you for you know,
- 6:12Speaker 1: for all of our chats throughout the year. I know
- 6:14Speaker 1: that it's been tough for you guys in many way,
- 6:16Speaker 1: but in many ways, but you've also kicked some massive goals,
- 6:20Speaker 1: won a national award just recently as well, and we
- 6:24Speaker 1: really appreciate you coming on air and chatting with us.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Ah, thank you. I know it's certainly been some lows,
- 6:30Speaker 2: but there's been some highs always.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Oh good on you. You and your husband run a
- 6:35Speaker 1: wonderful business and we really appreciate you chatting today.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Thank you, Shelly, Thanks Mary, Christmas everyone, you too.
