- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Cantonese with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and as always, I've got Luna here with me. Luna: Hey, hey! And we're still thinking about those fish balls from the night market last episode. I can almost taste them. Lucas: Oh, totally. And after all that snacking, you'd probably want something to drink, right? Luna: You read my mind. Today, let's learn how to order drinks at the night market. Lucas: Perfect. Let's start with the basic phrase: I want a cold drink. In Cantonese, that's 我想飲凍嘢. Luna: 我想飲凍嘢. Lucas: Nice and clear. Let's break it down. 我 means I, 想 means want, 飲 means drink, and 凍嘢 means cold thing. So literally, I want to drink cold thing. Luna: I want to drink cold thing. That's a fun way to think about it. Lucas: Exactly. Now, if you want something specific like orange juice, you say 一杯橙汁. One cup of orange juice. Luna: 一杯橙汁. So 杯 is the cup, and 橙汁 is orange juice? Lucas: You got it. 橙 means orange, 汁 means juice. So 橙汁 is orange juice. Luna: Nice. And if I want to order it, I can say 唔該,我想要一杯橙汁. Excuse me, I'd like a cup of orange juice. Lucas: Perfect. 唔該 is your all-purpose polite word, like saying please or excuse me. Then 我想要 is I want, and 一杯橙汁 is one cup of orange juice. So 唔該,我想要一杯橙汁. Luna: 唔該,我想要一杯橙汁. Lucas: There you go. Now, sometimes you don't want ice in your drink. To say no ice, please, you say 走冰. Luna: 走冰. So 走 means go away, and 冰 means ice. Go away, ice! Lucas: That's exactly right. It's a super common phrase at any drink stand. You can add it to your order: 唔該,我想要一杯橙汁,走冰. Luna: 唔該,我想要一杯橙汁,走冰. I love that. So simple. Lucas: And of course, you'll want to know the price. How much is it? In Cantonese, you ask 幾多錢? Luna: 幾多錢. That's one I remember from the market episodes. Lucas: Great memory. So you could say 唔該,一杯橙汁幾多錢? Excuse me, how much is a cup of orange juice? Luna: 唔該,一杯橙汁幾多錢. Okay, let me try to put it all together in a little scene. Lucas: Go for it. Luna: Okay, I walk up to the stall and say 唔該,我想要一杯橙汁,走冰. And then I ask 幾多錢? Lucas: Perfect. That's exactly how you'd do it. The vendor might say something like 十蚊, which means ten dollars. Luna: 十蚊. Got it. So 蚊 is like a slang for dollars. Lucas: Exactly. But we'll save more about money for another episode. Let's practice our phrases one more time. Repeat after me: 我想飲凍嘢. Luna: 我想飲凍嘢. Lucas: 一杯橙汁. Luna: 一杯橙汁. Lucas: 走冰. Luna: 走冰. Lucas: 幾多錢. Luna: 幾多錢. Lucas: And the full order: 唔該,我想要一杯橙汁,走冰. Luna: 唔該,我想要一杯橙汁,走冰. That's so satisfying to say. Lucas: It really is. And you know, this show is all about giving you these little wins in Cantonese. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, we'd love it if you could support us. It's a couple of dollars a month, and it genuinely keeps these episodes coming. You can do that at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, every little bit helps us keep this ad-free and fun. We really appreciate anyone who does. Lucas: So back to the night market. Imagine you're there, it's hot, you're thirsty. You spot a drink stall with fresh orange juice. You walk up and say 唔該,我想要一杯橙汁,走冰. How much is it? 幾多錢? The vendor says 十蚊. You hand over the money and say 唔該. Luna: And then you take a sip and say 好味! That's delicious, right? Lucas: Exactly. We learned that in the snacks episode. You're building your night market vocabulary nicely. Luna: This is fun. I feel like I could actually do this now. Lucas: And that's the goal. Let's do one more quick round. I'll say the English, you say the Cantonese. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: I want a cold drink. Luna: 我想飲凍嘢. Lucas: A cup of orange juice. Luna: 一杯橙汁. Lucas: No ice, please. Luna: 走冰. Lucas: How much is it? Luna: 幾多錢. Lucas: And the full sentence. Luna: 唔該,我想要一杯橙汁,走冰. And then 幾多錢? Lucas: Beautiful. You're all set for the night market. Practice these before we chat again, and you'll be ordering like a local. Luna: See you next time on Learn Cantonese with Fexingo!
