- 0:08Speaker 1: This is Suzanne von Richthofen, and she's taken and passed
- 0:12Speaker 1: an exam to be a clerk at the Court of
- 0:13Speaker 1: Justice in Sao Paulo, Brazil. With such competitive competition for
- 0:17Speaker 1: the high-paying role, it's a reason to smile. But for
- 0:21Speaker 1: the rest of the country, it's a reason to feel shock, horror,
- 0:24Speaker 1: and disgust. Because just 20 years ago, Suzanne brutally masterminded
- 0:30Speaker 1: the murder of her loving, hardworking parents. And now, as
- 0:34Speaker 1: of 2024... she's essentially walking free, steps away from holding
- 0:38Speaker 1: a position where she will be in charge of helping
- 0:40Speaker 1: the system that upholds the city's moral code. This is
- 0:45Speaker 1: the story of Suzanne von Richthofen, the infamous Brazilian criminal
- 0:48Speaker 1: who was born with a silver spoon in her mouth
- 0:51Speaker 1: and threw it all away for her selfish desires. This
- 0:55Speaker 1: is the home that once belonged to the von Richthofen family,
- 0:57Speaker 1: one of the most influential, successful, and seemingly happy families
- 1:01Speaker 1: in all of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The patriarch of the family,
- 1:04Speaker 1: Manfred Albert von Richthofen, grew up in Germany and later
- 1:07Speaker 1: went on to attend college in Sao Paulo for civil
- 1:09Speaker 1: engineering in the 1970s. While he was drowning in textbooks
- 1:13Speaker 1: and essays, a fellow student at the college caught his eye.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Mauricia was the same age as him, but so wildly different.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Of Lebanese and Italian descent, she had grown up in
- 1:23Speaker 1: Sao Paulo and seemed to have the vibrant culture of
- 1:25Speaker 1: the city ingrained in her. She was loud, funny, colorful,
- 1:29Speaker 1: and vivacious. Manfred was quiet and reserved, but Mauricia didn't
- 1:34Speaker 1: mind in the least. The moment she laid her eyes
- 1:36Speaker 1: on him, she was in love. They quickly got married
- 1:39Speaker 1: and began their careers in earnest. Manfred went on to
- 1:42Speaker 1: work as an engineer for the massive highway system surrounding
- 1:45Speaker 1: Sao Paulo, a position that offered him stability as well
- 1:48Speaker 1: as financial success. In his career, he saw through many
- 1:51Speaker 1: successful projects and worked as the head engineer on the
- 1:54Speaker 1: Mario Covas Beltway project. True to their opposites attract personas,
- 1:58Speaker 1: Mauricio was in a completely different field, working as a
- 2:01Speaker 1: successful psychiatrist for patients who adored her understanding and well-placed humor.
- 2:07Speaker 1: But no success felt greater to them than the birth
- 2:09Speaker 1: of their child. Suzanne was born on September 3, 1983,
- 2:14Speaker 1: and her brother Andreas was born a few years after her.
- 2:17Speaker 1: They were raised in this beautiful house with a pool, garden, library,
- 2:20Speaker 1: their own bedrooms, and whatever they wanted for toys, food,
- 2:23Speaker 1: and creature comforts inside. When you consider the wealth disparity
- 2:28Speaker 1: in Sao Paulo, that really illustrates just how lucky Andreas
- 2:32Speaker 1: and Suzanne were to grow up the way they did.
- 2:34Speaker 1: It's estimated that 19% of Sao Paulo lives in extreme poverty,
- 2:39Speaker 1: with a third of citizens in slum-like conditions. In 2021,
- 2:43Speaker 1: the average income of Sao Paulo was around $ 24, 000. less
- 2:47Speaker 1: than half of the lowest average state income in the U.S.
- 2:50Speaker 1: In other words, Andreas and Suzanne could have been raised
- 2:53Speaker 1: in a much more emotionally, mentally, and physically draining situation.
- 2:57Speaker 1: But instead, they had pools to swim in, parents who
- 3:00Speaker 1: loved them and pushed them to pursue what they loved,
- 3:02Speaker 1: and an education at one of the top schools in
- 3:04Speaker 1: the city. Suzanne attended a German language school with extremely
- 3:08Speaker 1: high expectations and flourished there, passing tests with ease. By
- 3:12Speaker 1: the time she was 18, she was fluent in three
- 3:15Speaker 1: languages and well on a path for a successful life.
- 3:18Speaker 1: And it wasn't just because of her education or the
- 3:20Speaker 1: love of her parents. It was because there was close
- 3:23Speaker 1: to $ 10 million sitting in a Swiss bank account with
- 3:25Speaker 1: her name on it. Her parents told her that if
- 3:27Speaker 1: she graduated school and successfully made a name for herself,
- 3:31Speaker 1: all of the money in the account would be granted
- 3:33Speaker 1: to her to do as she pleased. All Suzanne had
- 3:36Speaker 1: to do to continue living her life of luxury was
- 3:38Speaker 1: to graduate from law school, land any job, even if
- 3:42Speaker 1: just for a few days, and then buy herself a
- 3:44Speaker 1: lavish home and relax for the rest of her life.
- 3:48Speaker 1: But in the summer of 1999, something came up that
- 3:50Speaker 1: she couldn't ignore, and it became much more important than
- 3:53Speaker 1: her education. In August, the von Richthofen family went to
- 3:57Speaker 1: a local park to enjoy a model aircraft fair. Much
- 4:00Speaker 1: like his father, Andreas had fostered a deep love of
- 4:02Speaker 1: engineering and he was passionate about model planes. Ever-present, encouraging parents,
- 4:07Speaker 1: Mauricia and Manfred brought him to the festival to encourage
- 4:10Speaker 1: his interest in aviation and mechanics. Uninterested, Suzanne went elsewhere
- 4:14Speaker 1: for the day. But what happened at that fair would
- 4:18Speaker 1: change her life forever. Andreas became enamored with the model
- 4:21Speaker 1: planes created by a local 19-year-old, Daniel Cravenouche de Paolo
- 4:25Speaker 1: e Silva. A car and motorcycle repairman by trade, Daniel
- 4:29Speaker 1: knew his way around any machinery you could throw at him.
- 4:31Speaker 1: In his time off of work at a local garage,
- 4:34Speaker 1: he fell in love with model planes and quickly became
- 4:36Speaker 1: one of the most talented crafters and flyers around. Immediately,
- 4:40Speaker 1: Andreas took an interest in him. A couple of years
- 4:42Speaker 1: his senior, Daniel seemed like the kind of person Andreas
- 4:45Speaker 1: wanted to grow into. Sadly, he was far, far from it.
- 4:50Speaker 1: After spending the majority of the day with Daniel, Andreas
- 4:53Speaker 1: asked Daniel if he would be interested in teaching him
- 4:55Speaker 1: how to craft better planes. His parents agreed to compensate
- 4:59Speaker 1: Daniel handsomely for helping out their son. And like that,
- 5:02Speaker 1: a new dream was created for Andreas, who quickly began
- 5:05Speaker 1: working with Daniel every chance that he got. The von
- 5:07Speaker 1: Richthovens were thrilled to have brought some joy and education
- 5:10Speaker 1: into their son's life. They had no idea, however, what
- 5:15Speaker 1: terror they were inviting into their home. Daniel would frequently
- 5:19Speaker 1: come to the Vondrickhoven estate to work on planes, and
- 5:22Speaker 1: it wasn't long after he started having these lessons that
- 5:24Speaker 1: something else caught his eye. One afternoon, while he was
- 5:27Speaker 1: building planes with Andreas, Daniel was introduced to Suzanne. By
- 5:30Speaker 1: all accounts, the two teens couldn't have possibly been more different.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Like her father, Suzanne was said to be calm, understated,
- 5:37Speaker 1: and quiet. She didn't stick out in a crowd, didn't
- 5:40Speaker 1: challenge authority, and tended to follow the rules. As far
- 5:44Speaker 1: as her parents knew, at least. Daniel, on the other hand,
- 5:47Speaker 1: was known to be loud, funny, and at times, fiery.
- 5:51Speaker 1: While Suzanne had grown up with a silver spoon in
- 5:52Speaker 1: her mouth, Daniel had nothing to his name but grease
- 5:55Speaker 1: on his hands and a head full of ideas. At
- 5:58Speaker 1: a young age, Daniel was forced to drop out of
- 6:00Speaker 1: school in order to help support both himself and his family.
- 6:03Speaker 1: He took to working in a garage with his older
- 6:05Speaker 1: brother Christian, repairing motorcycles and cars. Their long days didn't
- 6:10Speaker 1: pay well, but it was enough to keep a roof
- 6:12Speaker 1: over Daniel's head and food in his stomach. The two
- 6:15Speaker 1: ended up taking jiu-jitsu classes together, which strengthened their relationship,
- 6:19Speaker 1: and slowly but surely, they became an inclusive couple. To
- 6:23Speaker 1: Suzanne's parents, it was an odd pairing, but they didn't disapprove.
- 6:26Speaker 1: After all, Daniel was a close friend with Andreas, the family,
- 6:30Speaker 1: and he'd always treated them with respect. He told Manfred
- 6:32Speaker 1: and Maricia that he was attending law school with hopes
- 6:34Speaker 1: of being the first in his family to move up
- 6:36Speaker 1: the corporate ladder. But as time passed, so did the
- 6:40Speaker 1: family's affection for Daniel. The man they had believed was
- 6:43Speaker 1: a hardworking person who came from the harsh side of
- 6:45Speaker 1: town had morphed into something they weren't expecting. He was
- 6:49Speaker 1: spending all of his time with Suzanne, living a life
- 6:52Speaker 1: of luxury off their dime. He quit his job at
- 6:55Speaker 1: the garage, didn't sign up for university, and took to
- 6:58Speaker 1: smoking and doing drugs all hours of the day. Suzanne's
- 7:01Speaker 1: parents watched as Suzanne, too, began to slip down that
- 7:04Speaker 1: unsavory path. Manfred and Maricia told Suzanne that they no
- 7:08Speaker 1: longer approved of her relationship with Daniel. Protesting their rejection,
- 7:11Speaker 1: she begged for her father to pay for her and
- 7:13Speaker 1: Daniel to get an apartment together and get the space
- 7:16Speaker 1: they needed. Her father welcomed the idea, but with a catch.
- 7:20Speaker 1: If Suzanne was going to move out with Daniel, then
- 7:23Speaker 1: she needed to fully financially support them. There would be
- 7:26Speaker 1: no more of her father's money to fund her derailing lifestyle. Instead,
- 7:30Speaker 1: Suzanne opted to stay home. But she wasn't willing to
- 7:32Speaker 1: give up Daniel that easily. Because Andreas was such good
- 7:35Speaker 1: friends with Daniel and liked seeing Suzanne happy, he helped
- 7:38Speaker 1: hide their relationship from their parents. Often, this entailed Daniel
- 7:42Speaker 1: coming up with lies to excuse his sister's absence late
- 7:44Speaker 1: at night or early in the morning. With Daniel backing
- 7:47Speaker 1: up any claims she made, it's likely that her parents
- 7:50Speaker 1: didn't suspect Suzanne was lying to them at all. That is,
- 7:54Speaker 1: until they decided to go on vacation. Soon after Suzanne
- 7:57Speaker 1: turned 18, her parents took a month-long vacation to Europe.
- 8:00Speaker 1: They intended to visit where Manfred had grown up and beyond,
- 8:03Speaker 1: visiting relatives and seeing all the glorious sights the continent
- 8:05Speaker 1: has to offer. And back at home, Suzanne was set
- 8:08Speaker 1: on seeing how much fun her home had to offer.
- 8:11Speaker 1: She and Daniel began throwing pool parties in the courtyard.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Pool parties that weren't just dancing and drinking, but hazy
- 8:17Speaker 1: nights of drug use. One night blurred into the other,
- 8:20Speaker 1: with Daniel and Suzanne at the helm. When Manfred and
- 8:23Speaker 1: Mauricio returned from their trip, they immediately heard what had
- 8:25Speaker 1: been happening at their home from neighbors and family friends.
- 8:28Speaker 1: In an instant, their trust in their daughter snapped, and
- 8:31Speaker 1: at the time of their deaths, it had never recovered.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Manfred put pressure on Suzanne, urging her to get serious
- 8:37Speaker 1: about making life for herself. If she didn't start making changes,
- 8:41Speaker 1: he told her he was going to consider taking her
- 8:43Speaker 1: allowance away, leaving her penniless. To this day, it's argued
- 8:47Speaker 1: how much effect that had on what happened next. In
- 8:52Speaker 1: the early morning hours, just after 4 a.m., a bone-chilling,
- 8:55Speaker 1: blood-curdling scream shook the neighborhood around the von Richthofen home awake.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Suzanne and Andreas stumbled out of the front door, ghost-white
- 9:03Speaker 1: looks on their faces. The two told law enforcement that
- 9:06Speaker 1: they had snuck out Halloween night at around 9 p.m.
- 9:09Speaker 1: soon after their parents went to bed after a long
- 9:11Speaker 1: day of work. Andreas went to a party at a
- 9:13Speaker 1: local internet cafe. Meanwhile, Suzanne claimed that she went to
- 9:17Speaker 1: a love hotel, intending on spending a couple of romantic
- 9:19Speaker 1: hours with Daniel. When they returned home, their parents' bedroom
- 9:22Speaker 1: door was wide open. Both Manfred and Maricia lay in
- 9:26Speaker 1: the bloody sheets in a horribly graphic state. They had
- 9:29Speaker 1: been attacked in their sleep with crowbars and beaten until
- 9:32Speaker 1: they were nearly unrecognizable. The beating that they had endured
- 9:35Speaker 1: was savage, and sadly... They survived for quite some time.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Suzanne was discovered with a plastic bag over her head
- 9:42Speaker 1: that had ultimately been used to asphyxiate her. Both of
- 9:45Speaker 1: them had been strangled with towels. At first, the scene
- 9:48Speaker 1: looked like a terrible robbery that the kids were lucky
- 9:51Speaker 1: to avoid. But, as law enforcement looked closer, troubling signs
- 9:55Speaker 1: began to emerge. Firstly, the security guard who worked for
- 9:59Speaker 1: the family and lived in the guardhouse just across the
- 10:01Speaker 1: street hadn't been notified of anyone entering the home. The
- 10:04Speaker 1: only way to enter the house without triggering the alarm
- 10:06Speaker 1: was to enter the correct code into the access pad.
- 10:09Speaker 1: That meant that whoever had entered the home to commit
- 10:11Speaker 1: the murder knew the code. Soon after this, the security
- 10:15Speaker 1: system was disabled, allowing anyone to walk into the home
- 10:17Speaker 1: without setting off any warnings. Across the street, the guard
- 10:20Speaker 1: was fast asleep, unaware of what was about to befall
- 10:23Speaker 1: the family he had cared for diligently for years. Then,
- 10:26Speaker 1: there was the inconsistency with the robbery. Money had indeed
- 10:30Speaker 1: been stolen from the property, but there were things of
- 10:33Speaker 1: immense value that hadn't been touched. Jewelry and electronics were
- 10:36Speaker 1: left behind. Drawers were opened in several rooms, and papers
- 10:39Speaker 1: were strewn about. Papers that seemed to have been placed
- 10:42Speaker 1: a little too intentionally on the carpet. Everything about the
- 10:45Speaker 1: robbery was too uniform and controlled to feel authentic. and
- 10:50Speaker 1: everything about Suzanne's behavior felt the same to investigators. At
- 10:54Speaker 1: the scene, she was cold, seemingly unbothered and unsurprised by
- 10:58Speaker 1: the horror of what she had seen. Meanwhile, poor Andreas
- 11:01Speaker 1: was hyperventilating and struggling to breathe so badly that he
- 11:04Speaker 1: could barely stand. For almost the entire day, he was
- 11:07Speaker 1: stuck in a spiral of anxiety and grief that left
- 11:10Speaker 1: him a shell of his former self. These waves of
- 11:13Speaker 1: panic and PTSD continued to follow him years after the
- 11:16Speaker 1: horrible situation he was forced to see. Naturally, law enforcement
- 11:20Speaker 1: took Suzanne and Andreas in for questioning. They told matching
- 11:24Speaker 1: stories and were let go, looked at by the public
- 11:26Speaker 1: as grieving children more than suspects. On November 1st, 2002,
- 11:30Speaker 1: Manfred and Mauricio were laid to rest to be beside
- 11:33Speaker 1: each other for all of eternity. At the funeral, Suzanne
- 11:36Speaker 1: seemed numb and Andreas was clearly heartbroken. However, it wasn't
- 11:40Speaker 1: her lack of reaction at the funeral that struck people
- 11:42Speaker 1: as odd. It was her behavior surrounding the days after
- 11:45Speaker 1: her parents' death. Apparently just three days after her parents
- 11:48Speaker 1: were murdered, Suzanne threw a pool party at the home.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Many people were appalled by this behavior, questioning how a
- 11:55Speaker 1: supposedly grieving teenager could party in the wake of her
- 11:58Speaker 1: parents' brutal deaths. The public perception of Suzanne began to wane.
- 12:02Speaker 1: She seemed to be living her best life after the
- 12:04Speaker 1: death of her parents, while Andreas was struggling immensely. Finally,
- 12:09Speaker 1: a local had enough and came forward to police with
- 12:11Speaker 1: information that they felt was vital to the investigation. They
- 12:14Speaker 1: reported that someone had come to their motorcycle shop and
- 12:17Speaker 1: purchased a Suzuki CGSX in $ 100 bills. The bike was
- 12:22Speaker 1: incredibly expensive, and the person who purchased the bike had
- 12:24Speaker 1: no means of having so much money to throw around.
- 12:27Speaker 1: The buyer was Christian, Daniel's older brother. At the time,
- 12:32Speaker 1: he still worked at the motorcycle shop, and he was
- 12:33Speaker 1: known to spend the majority of the money he earned
- 12:35Speaker 1: on drugs and booze. So... How had he suddenly come
- 12:39Speaker 1: up with the money to buy a brand new bike outright?
- 12:43Speaker 1: Law enforcement brought Christian in for questioning. Though he had
- 12:46Speaker 1: a tougher exterior and reputation within the local community, it
- 12:49Speaker 1: only took a few questions before he cracked and blurted
- 12:51Speaker 1: out the truth to the police. He had killed Maricia
- 12:56Speaker 1: and Manfred. But he didn't do it alone. For months,
- 13:00Speaker 1: Suzanne and Daniel had been plotting the murder of Manfred
- 13:02Speaker 1: and Maricia. With the promise of financial gain, Christian was
- 13:05Speaker 1: quick to agree and take part in ending their lives.
- 13:08Speaker 1: On Halloween night, Suzanne did sneak out with Andreas. However,
- 13:11Speaker 1: after she dropped him off at the internet cafe, she
- 13:14Speaker 1: returned home with Daniel and Christian. She entered the house
- 13:17Speaker 1: using the code, then disabled the alarm system from inside.
- 13:21Speaker 1: She watched as Christian and Daniel slid on surgical gloves
- 13:24Speaker 1: and wrapped their hands around iron crowbars. She remained downstairs
- 13:27Speaker 1: while the boys made the journey up to her parents'
- 13:29Speaker 1: bedroom while they were peacefully sleeping. Though she wasn't present
- 13:33Speaker 1: in the room, many argue that she is just as
- 13:35Speaker 1: guilty as Christian and Daniel. In the room, the two
- 13:38Speaker 1: began to viciously beat the sleeping couple with crowbars, but shockingly,
- 13:41Speaker 1: they refused to die. In a pool of blood, the
- 13:44Speaker 1: two continued to gasp for breath and even attempted to
- 13:46Speaker 1: fight back. The boys took towels and tightened them around
- 13:49Speaker 1: their necks, strangling them. Tragically, Manfred did not survive this,
- 13:53Speaker 1: taking his last breath as one of the boys choked him.
- 13:56Speaker 1: But Maricia was still fighting for her life. Apparently believing
- 13:59Speaker 1: that they had no other option, the boys grabbed a
- 14:01Speaker 1: plastic bag and wrapped it around her head, fatally suffocating her. After,
- 14:05Speaker 1: the three ran around the house, taking money and staging
- 14:08Speaker 1: the scene to look like a robbery gone wrong. When
- 14:10Speaker 1: they left the scene of the crime, Suzanne and Daniel
- 14:12Speaker 1: went to a love hotel. Christian went to a local
- 14:15Speaker 1: fast food joint, trying to ensure that he was seen
- 14:17Speaker 1: in public to give himself an alibi for the night.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Soon after Christian's confession, Daniel and Suzanne also confessed to
- 14:23Speaker 1: law enforcement. However, their stories differed. Daniel told law enforcement
- 14:28Speaker 1: that the murder was driven by money and that he
- 14:30Speaker 1: couldn't resist the opportunity after growing up in poverty. Suzanne, however...
- 14:34Speaker 1: reportedly denied that money was a motive at all. The
- 14:36Speaker 1: brothers both claimed that Suzanne's family was highly violent and
- 14:39Speaker 1: treated Suzanne and Andreas cruelly. They stated that they simply
- 14:43Speaker 1: acted on her wishes, wanting to rescue her from her life.
- 14:46Speaker 1: After their initial arrest, three were allowed to walk free
- 14:48Speaker 1: while they awaited their trial. During that time period, it
- 14:51Speaker 1: seemed that Suzanne was set on making herself look innocent.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Early on, she gave an interview to a local news station.
- 14:57Speaker 1: But it did the opposite of what she intended. Unbeknownst
- 15:01Speaker 1: to her, a camera was rolling while her lawyer coached
- 15:03Speaker 1: her on what to say and how to act on camera. Then,
- 15:07Speaker 1: she did exactly as he said, faking tears. about what
- 15:12Speaker 1: to say about ex-boyfriend Daniel Cravinhos and how to behave
- 15:15Speaker 1: in front of the camera. It's over, nothing more. I
- 15:18Speaker 1: start crying and I say, I don't want to talk anymore.
- 15:21Speaker 1: He always told me that if I loved him, I
- 15:23Speaker 1: had to do it. And I, for God's sake, I
- 15:25Speaker 1: don't want to talk about this anymore, it hurts me
- 15:29Speaker 1: a lot. Enough. I don't want to, please. Wow, yesterday
- 15:35Speaker 1: I was super bad, it was super bad, it was super, super. Naturally,
- 15:44Speaker 1: the public's perception of Suzanne and her innocence plummeted after
- 15:47Speaker 1: this incident. Four years after the violent crime took place, Suzanne, Daniel,
- 15:51Speaker 1: and Christian were brought to trial. Each of them brought
- 15:54Speaker 1: their own strategies to court in an attempt to lower
- 15:56Speaker 1: their sentences. Suzanne tried to blame the entire situation on Daniel,
- 16:00Speaker 1: stating in tears that he kept her on several drugs
- 16:02Speaker 1: in an attempt to keep her out of her mind
- 16:04Speaker 1: and under his control. The brothers continued to claim that
- 16:07Speaker 1: Suzanne was the mastermind behind the murder. All three were
- 16:11Speaker 1: initially charged with the same crime, first-degree murder. Suzanne was
- 16:15Speaker 1: sentenced to 40 years in prison for first-degree murder. Daniel
- 16:18Speaker 1: received the same sentence, while his brother received 38 years
- 16:21Speaker 1: for conspiracy. However, none of them served their full sentences.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Both Daniel and Christian have been released. While Daniel has
- 16:29Speaker 1: flown mostly under the radar, Christian has returned to working
- 16:32Speaker 1: in a motorcycle repair shop. Suzanne was released in January
- 16:35Speaker 1: of 2023 on probation, and has since gone on to
- 16:38Speaker 1: move to the community of Achibaya. where she has settled
- 16:40Speaker 1: down and given birth to a son with her domestic partner.
- 16:44Speaker 1: In addition, she has caused outrage for returning to law
- 16:46Speaker 1: school and working towards a degree that will allow her
- 16:48Speaker 1: to work in the criminal justice system. In September of 2024,
- 16:53Speaker 1: citizens of Sao Paulo were outraged when they discovered that
- 16:56Speaker 1: she had applied to work as a clerk in the
- 16:58Speaker 1: Justice Department. There are no laws that would prohibit her
- 17:01Speaker 1: from taking this role, which means that a woman who
- 17:04Speaker 1: orchestrated the murder of her parents is may be working
- 17:07Speaker 1: in the office that separates right from wrong.
