- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Two Shot
- 0:10Tuesday. It's Barry Nixon along, a man
- 0:14who truly knows everything there is to know about life.
- 0:17Jay, I've learned so much from you.
- 0:19It's incredible. There are men out there, but
- 0:21then there is the man, and that's you.
- 0:24Thanks for making time to be with me on another week and our
- 0:26audience certainly appreciates it.
- 0:28You know, Barry, I would argue if I could, but that intro just
- 0:31was so spot on that I think it's it.
- 0:34I like to think I am the man, although in many ways I haven't
- 0:37grown up. So I'm quite the boy when it
- 0:39comes to my reading habits, my TV habits, a lot of my habits,
- 0:43my eating habits tend to be some.
- 0:45Of your dietary choices could be, you know, questioned, but
- 0:49yeah, that's not for mere mortals to question.
- 0:52Anyway, it's good to see you Jay.
- 0:53We have a an absolutely jam packed show.
- 0:55But before we dive in head 1st, I believe you and I will be
- 0:59doing a shot together, maybe 2 I think.
- 1:02So I think we're going to do that.
- 1:03I'm going to start with a very manly shot because you know,
- 1:07that's one thing only you have to be over a certain age to
- 1:10legally drink alcohol. And so tonight I will be
- 1:13consuming Bushmills Black Bush, one of my 2 faves that I always
- 1:18keep on offer. What have you got?
- 1:19Amazing. Amazing.
- 1:21I love the the the Bushmills black Bush.
- 1:23I haven't had it in a while. I have another Bushmills
- 1:25product, the 12 year nice, equally delicious.
- 1:29Yeah. See you.
- 1:30Cheers, cheers. Oh, oh, it went up into my
- 1:37sinuses in a good way. Yes, in a good way.
- 1:39Wow. Yeah.
- 1:40You know, from from that face, it almost looks like you did a
- 1:43somersault in a pool. You know that move and then the
- 1:46water kind of goes up as you're going to go on under I.
- 1:48Know yeah, I felt that I've been in there.
- 1:50I was looking at the LCBO when I was there last because I saw the
- 1:5312 year at my LCBO, it's behind lock and key and so I never
- 1:59asked for it because I see it and I go oh, that's the one
- 2:02Barry gets all the time He likes it.
- 2:04But in my LCBO it is under like glass with another aged one.
- 2:08I'm not sure if it's a 10 year or anything but it's it's behind
- 2:10lock and key and I can't be bothered to bother people to get
- 2:13it for me. What do you think about that,
- 2:14Shane? They should be falling over
- 2:17themselves to open that cabinet for you, Jay.
- 2:19That's surprising. It's behind lock and key.
- 2:21Mine is just on the open. Shelf really.
- 2:23That's yeah, wow. I've never seen it kind of just
- 2:26out there. I've seen it either not anywhere
- 2:29or at mine. It's behind lock and key.
- 2:30I guess there's a lot of a lot of near do wells looking to get
- 2:34their hands on the 12 year. It's a It's a good year for
- 2:37criminals. I guess so, but I'm wondering is
- 2:40maybe maybe you were seeing something like an 18 or because
- 2:44usually they lock up the stuff that's really, really it's I.
- 2:46Checked it and it's like a $64 bottle.
- 2:48It's not the cheapest bottle of 12 year.
- 2:50Yeah, like the the black Bush is like a 50 something dollar
- 2:53bottle. 55 maybe. Yeah, this one's up, step up.
- 2:56And then there's one next to it, which I bet you is the 18 and
- 2:58they they keep them together. Interesting.
- 3:00Yeah, yeah, I would have thought 64 bucks, while expensive and
- 3:04certainly not. You know, good quality, yeah.
- 3:06You wouldn't think that would have to be locked up.
- 3:08That's. It's not that big a step up, I
- 3:10know, from the black Bush. Like that's right there.
- 3:12Why are you locking up the 12 year?
- 3:14And really, if somebody's stealing whiskey, they're going
- 3:18to just steal whatever they can get their hands on anyway.
- 3:20You're thinking it's mostly to be consumed.
- 3:22I guess it could be resold, but you know, yeah, the free, the 12
- 3:27year, I say, that's what I say. LCBO at DuPont near Spadina,
- 3:32Free the 12 year please. Dude, let's get that trending on
- 3:36X. OK, free.
- 3:37The 12 year, I love it. Yeah.
- 3:39And I will say they do have ample black Bush, Jameson black
- 3:42black barrel, sorry, Jameson black barrel as well.
- 3:45So that I'm happy about. They've got several facings of
- 3:47that. So nothing to complain there.
- 3:50That is good. That's something I would love to
- 3:53see returning to my LCBO. It's so inconsistent I really
- 3:56don't understand who does the ordering.
- 3:57I don't either. Anyway, Barry, you've been very
- 4:00vocal in the last several episodes as you've taken us
- 4:02through World Cup fever. I'm wondering what you've got
- 4:04for us today to talk to and, and I'll, you know, do my best to
- 4:08keep up And, and really, I've been carrying my fair share of
- 4:10the load. I, I want to be able to do that
- 4:12in this episode. Hence a little bit of a chat
- 4:15about how we lock up our boots. Right.
- 4:17Yeah, exactly. Well, that's thread.
- 4:18I can certainly update you at the time of this recording, you
- 4:21might notice that I'm wearing an England shirt.
- 4:23England has made it ratted through to the quarter final and
- 4:27they will be facing the Norwegians this Saturday at the
- 4:30time of this recording. So just a few days away.
- 4:32And it's do or die as it all these matches are now.
- 4:35They're all one and done eliminations.
- 4:37But I don't remember ever England and Norway facing off.
- 4:40And if they have, I don't think it was ever this deep in the
- 4:43tournament. So it's super exciting and let's
- 4:46go England, let's go Lions and hopefully they can come through
- 4:49and move on, be super exciting, yeah, if they could.
- 4:53I've got to tell you, I've been watching as well.
- 4:56I'm getting caught up in the fever now ever since the Canada
- 4:58game, the most recent Canada game where they lost and then I
- 5:01watched I think it was the. Morocco, that was.
- 5:03Yeah, France and Mexico, basically.
- 5:05I watch all the host countries get put out.
- 5:07Was it France and Mexico? Yeah.
- 5:09France is not a host, but USA. And Mexico is so as I meant, and
- 5:13Mexico lost. So France beat Mexico, Canada
- 5:16got beat. And then of course, the US just
- 5:17got beat. So all of the host countries are
- 5:19now out of this. That's right, actually was
- 5:21actually just to correct you quickly, it was England that
- 5:23defeated Mexico in Mexico City to send them home.
- 5:27Yeah, that was beautiful. An absolute stunner of a game.
- 5:30It was just incredible. Yeah, that and that stadium was
- 5:33incredible. Like that stadium in Mexico was
- 5:36like, it kind of puts BMO Field a bit to shame.
- 5:38But that thing's built, I think, for soccer, right?
- 5:41The Mexico. It's purpose build for soccer.
- 5:43They call it the Azteca, and it's a legendary facility that
- 5:47has probably, I don't know, like 90, maybe 80,000 in the seats.
- 5:51Like, it's enormous and apparently it gets super super.
- 5:54Loud I could see, because that's a lot of people excited about
- 5:58the same thing. So, yeah, that's true.
- 5:59Yeah. So what?
- 6:01OK. Have you got a pick then?
- 6:03I know England is the jersey you're wearing, so that would be
- 6:06your pick. OK.
- 6:07That is my pick. I truly hope that they can make
- 6:10it past the Norwegians. And then who's to say who will
- 6:13be next? But this has been one heck of a
- 6:15tournament. Jay, everyone will always
- 6:18remember the 26 tournament, not just because it was in our own
- 6:21backyard. I what am I saying?
- 6:23Of course it's because it was in our own backyard.
- 6:25Everyone's going to remember the 26 tournament, but there's been
- 6:27so many surprises, so many upsets.
- 6:30It's just been so entertaining today.
- 6:32At the time of this recording, the yard continuance were down
- 6:35to nothing in their must win situation against the Egyptians
- 6:39and they came back and 132 like nobody's out of this out of any
- 6:44of these matches it seemed even with just like a handful of
- 6:47minutes left at the end of the match.
- 6:49So Argentina is through at the time of this recording.
- 6:51Executive producer Aldo Roma looked up a stat and it was Who
- 6:56has won the most World Cups? Can you tell me, Barry, who's
- 6:58won the most World Cups? I believe it's Brazil with five,
- 7:02five of them. You're correct.
- 7:03I thought it was 4, but it was. It's definitely Brazil.
- 7:06They're of course out. They were put out of the
- 7:08tournament. Thank goodness.
- 7:09I know this. Look, I'm talking sports.
- 7:11With they are dangerous. Yeah, dangerous.
- 7:13Yeah, so they were like #1 and then he made a separate comment
- 7:17going it's, it's amazing. You hear a lot of these teams
- 7:19with a lot of bluster that have actually never won the World
- 7:22Cup. But there's a number of teams
- 7:23that are like, they're talking like they want it.
- 7:25They're acting like they want it, but they've never won it
- 7:27yet. So they're thirsty for their
- 7:28first World Cup. And they're.
- 7:31Yeah, not humble. Out of the 100 years almost of
- 7:34this tournament existing, only eight countries have won the
- 7:37World Cup, which is incredible. Right.
- 7:40Only every four years. Yeah, that's true.
- 7:42OK, So be 40 tournaments I guess in in 100 years?
- 7:45Well, almost 100. It'll be 120, 30.
- 7:48But regardless, only eight nations have won it.
- 7:51And like you said, there's been many other teams competing in
- 7:53it. They they talk a big game.
- 7:55Maybe some of them will have won European Championships, CONCACAF
- 7:58or tournaments in South America. At the World.
- 8:01But the World Cup is the World Cup.
- 8:03So it is the you know what, nobody has said it world, nobody
- 8:06said it better than you. The World Cup is the World Cup
- 8:10and I think on. That truly is.
- 8:11We should do our second shot. Let's do it.
- 8:14All right, you know what? I'm drinking the black Bush and
- 8:17and you. I'm sticking with what's
- 8:19working, Jay, and that's the Bushmills. 12 year behind Lock
- 8:22and Key. Here's to you.
- 8:23Cheers now. You sent me an interesting text
- 8:28earlier today on a new item that has changed your life almost
- 8:32from the outset. Yeah, from on from the unboxing
- 8:35to this moment, your life is different.
- 8:37Tell us how. Barry, I always read at night,
- 8:41as you know, and a lot of that is comics.
- 8:43And I read before I go to bed. And so I'm always reading on my
- 8:45iPad and it's comfortable. Well, and it's nice, but it's,
- 8:48you know, it's, I have, as, you know, behind me, you can see
- 8:50physical copies of giant omnibuses and things that I buy
- 8:54and like to have in my collection.
- 8:55But I don't always, you know, I'm reading at night.
- 8:57So I don't get a chance to always read these physical books
- 9:00that I love so much. Well, suddenly I was reading in
- 9:03the chair in the living room, and I turned on the light over
- 9:05me and it was very bright. And I was like, ah, this is too
- 9:08bright. And then I thought, this must
- 9:10exist. And I went to Amazon, which is
- 9:12where you always go when you're not sure if something exists
- 9:14because they will have it. Yeah, and it was an on book
- 9:18clipped reading light. You clip it on the back of your
- 9:21book. It has to have a heavy enough
- 9:23spine. It can't be like a loose comic.
- 9:25I can't do that. It's got a little little wire
- 9:28and then it's got the light and like 8 LED settings, dimness for
- 9:31days. It now charges up with a, with a
- 9:34regular charger, kind of like a phone would do.
- 9:36And I'm reading in bed. As I said to you, it turns every
- 9:39physical book into an iPad basically.
- 9:41Because I can now read, I'm flipping pages.
- 9:44It's not disturbing. Executive producer Alda Roma,
- 9:46who's right next to me. And I took it on its maiden
- 9:48voyage last night. And I have to tell you, I really
- 9:51enjoyed this. It's so lightweight, you can't
- 9:53even feel it on this book. Like you, it does not add really
- 9:56any weight at all, maybe not not even an ounce to this book.
- 10:00So I'm loving this. So I'm going to be able to now
- 10:02alternate between iPads and physical books.
- 10:05And as you know, I don't sleep so good.
- 10:07So I'm also trying it because I know screens are kind of bad for
- 10:10you at night. So I'm kind of going to go on a
- 10:12little quest and see if it works where maybe post 7:00 PM
- 10:16onwards, I'm going to go to the physical book and just, you
- 10:19know, check in on my phone if I need to, but go to the physical
- 10:22book and read off the physical book.
- 10:24So I'll this will be a journey that my our listeners and our
- 10:27viewers, viewers and you can come on with me as I see if it
- 10:29helps improve my sleep. Right.
- 10:31Well, that's very, that's a very good point that screens have
- 10:35been linked to some sleep interruptions, especially before
- 10:38bed. So this is a kind of a cool
- 10:40experiment. What was the first book that you
- 10:43took to bed last night and watched or read rather?
- 10:46Yeah, what was it? My God, Barry, this is a story
- 10:49in and of itself, but it's called all.
- 10:51Right, let's go. It's called X-Men Else When and
- 10:55it is by a creator named John Byrne who is a legendary comic
- 11:00book creator. He had a legendary run on the
- 11:02X-Men and this is in the 70s. He left the book in like 7980
- 11:07due to disagreements with the writer and he went off and he
- 11:10did a big run on the Fantastic Four.
- 11:12Anyway, during the pandemic, he started doing fan fiction where
- 11:16he would post one page on his website of just penciled pages
- 11:21of this is what I would do if I had continued my run on the
- 11:24X-Men. And he posted one page every day
- 11:27or so for a couple of years for nothing.
- 11:30He paid nothing, although he has sold the pages and made a lot of
- 11:33money, I've heard like through selling original artwork.
- 11:35So he's not starving, but it was something that he did for a
- 11:38couple of years and he and so just this past year they made
- 11:42they decided they were going to ink it, color it.
- 11:44So they got an anchor over his pencils.
- 11:46They're colored it and they bound it.
- 11:48There's the empty spine because I take it out of the slip cover.
- 11:51It's behind me. And so they've they're not
- 11:53publishing it in three volumes of John Burns X-Men else when,
- 11:58and this is if he would have continued now he stopped doing
- 12:01that too. So I know it's going to end on a
- 12:02cliffhanger and he's already said when we published the third
- 12:05volume, I'm just I don't feel like doing anymore.
- 12:07So I'm just going to write out what the rest of the story would
- 12:09have been. I'm going to tell you how it
- 12:10would have ended. And that's great because this
- 12:12guy is he got me into really collecting comics with his
- 12:16Superman run in 1986, the Man of Steel, which I will be getting
- 12:19an absolute addition when it's comes available later this
- 12:22summer. And you'll be the first to see
- 12:24it anyways, John Burns X-Men else when is an alternate
- 12:29reality of how the X-Men would have gone had he continued on
- 12:32the book and taken over the writing chores.
- 12:34So that was my I just got it about a week ago and it's what I
- 12:38was excited to read it and I started reading it last night
- 12:40and it's great. It's just a lot of fun classic
- 12:43comic book stuff, classic comic book art, not a complicated
- 12:47story and really kind of a cool story of how he at a time when
- 12:50he just felt like doing stuff like he's older now, he's in his
- 12:5280s. So he, he just started putting
- 12:55out, putting out these pages and rough pencils.
- 12:57And people over the years have kind of grabbed the pages and
- 13:00ink them and collected them themselves.
- 13:02So Marvel decided, hey, let's make some money out of this, and
- 13:04they've put them together in a book and approved this this
- 13:07publication. So he's not only an artist, but
- 13:09a writer as. Well, yeah, he he was he wrote
- 13:12and drew the Fantastic Four for like a number of years.
- 13:15He wrote and drew Superman. In 1986, he relaunched Superman.
- 13:19So a lot of the elements of Superman that we know today, he
- 13:23came up with or was a Co creator in like Lex Luthor being a
- 13:26businessman, you know, as we saw in the latest Superman movie and
- 13:29has been that way since the 90s. He, a guy writer named Marv
- 13:33Wolfman came up with that. They work together on this.
- 13:35Superman's parents not being dead, but being alive, like
- 13:38stuff like that. We're all stuff that he he came
- 13:41up with as part of his run. And it was that Superman comic
- 13:44Superman #7 that I saw at the newsstand.
- 13:46And I was like, how can Superman only be at issue number 7?
- 13:50And then I bought that and I realized that he relaunched it
- 13:53and anyways, done lots of other stuff.
- 13:55Big runs on Wonder Woman, the New Gods, all kinds of
- 13:57characters you have no idea of. Like your eyes are like super
- 14:00glossed over now. As they should.
- 14:02But he is a legendary creator. Bit of an attitude, a lot of a
- 14:05chip on his shoulder and a lot of interviews he does.
- 14:07But he was so popular in the 70s and 80s especially that he he
- 14:13could basically say and do anything he wanted because he
- 14:15was bringing in a lot of money for Marvel and DC.
- 14:19Where does this chip on his shoulder come from, do you
- 14:21think? He's just.
- 14:22You know, so successful. Well, that's it.
- 14:24I think, you know, sometimes when you're driven to success,
- 14:26you're driven to, I don't know about a chip on his shoulder.
- 14:29Very strong opinions. Definitely bought into the hype
- 14:33of him being because you know when you're the number one star,
- 14:35like think of an athlete when you're the number one star,
- 14:37you're driving, you're putting the bums in seats, you're making
- 14:39things happen for a giant company and then that starts to
- 14:42turn. You're a little bit past your
- 14:44prime taste change. You know, it's hard to kind of
- 14:46let that go like he's a competitor.
- 14:48I would say he's probably. Sure.
- 14:49Yeah, that's a good, that's a good analogy.
- 14:52And yeah, I guess at that level, you're probably drinking your
- 14:54own Kool-aid on how good you are.
- 14:56And you're being, you're surrounded by people telling you
- 14:58that all day. Long, that's right.
- 14:59And you're seeing your other people come up like there were
- 15:01other comic book creators at that time that were like getting
- 15:04attention. And so you're always trying to
- 15:06kind of one up each other. Yeah, it was a big time in the
- 15:0890s was a big time of that. There's we'll talk about this
- 15:10another time, but there's like a whole other sets of creators of
- 15:13different eras that come up. Like there's there's a podcast I
- 15:16listen to by a creator named Rob Lightfel.
- 15:19He's a huge fan of John Byrne collects his original art.
- 15:22This guy. So the Rob Liefeld created
- 15:24Deadpool and a bunch of that's his real big claim to fame.
- 15:27But he's he's had a lot of success.
- 15:29He loves John Byrnes art loves it, but John Byrne hacks on him
- 15:33because he was one of the creators of the 90s.
- 15:35John Byrne was one of the 70s and 80s.
- 15:37So the 90s creators kind of supplanted them as being the
- 15:39superstars. And so that's where some of this
- 15:41chip on the show, he's just like, there's a lot of fights.
- 15:43So John Byrne has taken shots at him.
- 15:46But Rob Liefeld can separate the art and the and the kind of
- 15:49personality and he's he owns a lot of this individual, this
- 15:53kind of original art, I should say anyway, it's kind of and Rob
- 15:56Lightfeld on his own is also a very polarizing creator.
- 15:58He's also will talk up a tough game and remind everyone that
- 16:03always that he created Deadpool and he'll say, I'll do it
- 16:06because nobody else is going to. So I have to hype it up.
- 16:09And he gets he also gets royalties for when they license
- 16:13out Deadpool. So it's in his best interest to
- 16:14keep Deadpool as a popular character.
- 16:16Right. I think Ryan Reynolds is
- 16:18certainly helping in that regard.
- 16:19I don't think he has to worry so much about that character being
- 16:22relevant or going away anytime soon.
- 16:24No, that shouldn't be brought to the forefront.
- 16:26Yeah, exactly. That's pretty cool.
- 16:28I can imagine you in an alternate universe working as a
- 16:31comic book writer slash illustrator.
- 16:34I mean, I think that in an alternate universe you would be
- 16:36right at home in that environment.
- 16:38Yeah, I used to. Well, when I was a kid, I used
- 16:40to write and draw my own comics I had there in my basement.
- 16:42I'll show you the next time I'm at the mini mansion.
- 16:44I'll show you some of the classic from the Yes Yeah Yeah
- 16:47from Jr. Comics.
- 16:48How? Was Jr. being revealed now you.
- 16:50Didn't know this. My mom would know this.
- 16:51Yeah, Millie knows this. There was.
- 16:53So I've actually, those are one of the few things I've kept,
- 16:55which is like collections of of comics that I created as a kid.
- 16:59There are some titles you might recognize, like The Amazing
- 17:03Spider Kid, the Incredible Kid, Super Kid.
- 17:07There were a lot of, lot of characters that were a theme
- 17:09here. Yeah.
- 17:10Similar to characters you might think you know, but they're not
- 17:14exactly that. You don't the.
- 17:16The Amazing Spider Kid just happens to look like Spider Man
- 17:19and have similar adventures. They fought a lot of classmates
- 17:22that I was that I went to school with.
- 17:24My classmates would be like, draw me in your comments.
- 17:27So they would be, they would kind of fight.
- 17:28Wow, Yeah, that was kind of a thing.
- 17:30You didn't definitely want to see this and we should have
- 17:32Millie on the show to. I cannot believe that this is
- 17:35just being unearthed today on episode 299.
- 17:39I was saving it for this. Yeah, I was saving it.
- 17:43All right before we go just really quick Jay, I have a quick
- 17:454K corner for you and I did preview this disc even though
- 17:49you and I do have a a plan to sit down together and watch it,
- 17:52which I am happy to do because this movie I'm I'm here to tell
- 17:55you right now I. Think I know it up.
- 17:57Beastmaster. The Beastmaster.
- 17:59After seeing it too, I feel like I understand you better.
- 18:02Why? Because this lead character,
- 18:05DAR, he doesn't wear a shirt the entire movie and there's only
- 18:10one scene where he pops on like a tarp just to like the disguise
- 18:14of the commoner. It itches his skin so badly.
- 18:17It's only on him for about 20 seconds and then he's back to
- 18:20being the boss. Sweaty guy.
- 18:22So you as a young man figuring out who you are, this I can
- 18:26completely get the appeal of of the beast faster for you.
- 18:31I was like, OK, I think I understand Jay more.
- 18:33This guy, obviously he's working out, he's doing what he needs to
- 18:37do. And it's just hilarious that no
- 18:39matter what scene, what circumstance, this guy is just
- 18:42oiled up and ready to go. Yeah, I think everybody goes a
- 18:45little gay for a Beastmaster. That's just how it is.
- 18:48That's just how things. Got exactly?
- 18:50Yeah, totally. This is and it's Mark Singer.
- 18:52Am I right? From V, From the show V, Yeah.
- 18:55And yeah. I remember when I first watched
- 18:57it, like as not a child, I was like, Oh my God, Mark Singer.
- 19:00Mark Singer is really well put together.
- 19:02But yeah. Yes, yeah, good.
- 19:04Is good for him. In those days he was holding it
- 19:07together. Yeah.
- 19:07The Beastmaster, Yeah. The Beastmaster also with Rick
- 19:10Torn as the the main baddie, the main heavy in the movie along
- 19:15with some like really disfigured witches that he has that have
- 19:18fantastic like supermodel bodies but their faces look like
- 19:22they're wearing ham sandwiches on their face.
- 19:25It's a terrible. But anyway, the movie holds up,
- 19:29Jay, and you'll love the runtime.
- 19:30It's very lean, so I look forward to revisiting it with
- 19:33you. I thought it was good.
- 19:34It held my attention the entire time.
- 19:35I thought it was. It clipped along nicely.
- 19:37And the animals in there, of course, you know, you got the
- 19:40black tiger, you got the eagle. Yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 19:43Yeah, amazing. I enjoyed it.
- 19:44I enjoyed it very much. Thank you for 4K Corner, that
- 19:47will be our next watch at the mini mansion when we get
