- 0:11Speaker 1: And good afternoon and welcome to the program here on
- 0:14Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. So good Monday
- 0:19Speaker 1: to you. My name is Craig Wake. Glad to have
- 0:20Speaker 1: you with us. Alongside the producer, Jake Herman. We're with
- 0:24Speaker 1: you each and every weekday afternoon. Monday through Friday, 2
- 0:29Speaker 1: to 5 p.m. And today is the first Longhorns Monday.
- 0:39Speaker 1: of the brand-new 2026 college football season because, after all,
- 0:44Speaker 1: college football has arrived. We had games over the weekend
- 0:47Speaker 1: as proof of that, the zero week in college football, which,
- 0:52Speaker 1: by the way, existed in that name only through the weekend.
- 0:56Speaker 1: It exists no more. Starting next year, it'll be week one.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Teams will have 14 weeks to play 12 now. So
- 1:06Speaker 1: no more games. waivers needed or or games played on
- 1:11Speaker 1: foreign shores and things like that now everybody will be
- 1:17Speaker 1: eligible don't have to start that last week in august
- 1:20Speaker 1: but everyone is now eligible to do it without a
- 1:22Speaker 1: waiver uh but the longboard start play this week the
- 1:26Speaker 1: regular season opener is five days away as Texas will
- 1:31Speaker 1: be taking on the Texas State Bobcats. Plenty to talk
- 1:34Speaker 1: with about that. Because this is Longhorns Monday, what we
- 1:38Speaker 1: do on Monday, on Longhorns Monday, is to bring you,
- 1:43Speaker 1: first of all, live at 1130 in the morning on Mondays,
- 1:48Speaker 1: the weekly press conference from Longhorns head football coach Steve Sarkeesian.
- 1:52Speaker 1: So we have that. And then during this program, we
- 1:56Speaker 1: bring you the highlights of in its edited form of
- 2:00Speaker 1: the press conference, his thoughts on things. We have that.
- 2:02Speaker 1: That's an all part of that. We'll hear a little
- 2:04Speaker 1: bit from Arch Manning as well. He was over there today.
- 2:06Speaker 1: We'll hear much more from Arch tomorrow, but we'll hear
- 2:09Speaker 1: a little bit of him. Also, uh, we'll, we'll take
- 2:14Speaker 1: a look at what's going on with college football. We're
- 2:16Speaker 1: heading toward a real critical mass point on this whole, um,
- 2:24Speaker 1: Former NFL player, is he eligible to return to college football?
- 2:32Speaker 1: Dust up, you might say kerfuffle disagreement and all the
- 2:38Speaker 1: legalese that's going into that. Probably in the legal documents,
- 2:42Speaker 1: the word kerfuffle probably will not be included in that.
- 2:47Speaker 1: So we'll have some other legal terms to give you
- 2:51Speaker 1: because Thursday apparently is going to be a really big
- 2:53Speaker 1: day on whether this thing gets decided one way or another.
- 2:58Speaker 1: We're going to hear from the head coaches of the
- 3:01Speaker 1: two NFL teams in this state because the NFL preseason
- 3:06Speaker 1: is completely done now and roster cutdowns had to happen yesterday.
- 3:12Speaker 1: They become official. The 53-man rosters are done now. They'll
- 3:16Speaker 1: come back around once the players who were cut are
- 3:21Speaker 1: if they go unclaimed on waivers, then the teams that
- 3:24Speaker 1: release them can re-sign them to the practice squad. And
- 3:30Speaker 1: that might be the case for Jaden Blue, the former Longhorn,
- 3:33Speaker 1: who was released by the Cowboys, although he might be
- 3:38Speaker 1: an enticing look for another NFL team. We'll find out
- 3:40Speaker 1: more about that, but we'll hear from the head coaches
- 3:42Speaker 1: as well. We have inconceivable this hour and We are
- 3:48Speaker 1: chock full of food items. Now, it's not all fast food,
- 3:52Speaker 1: junk food. We've got some of that, but there's some
- 3:55Speaker 1: items related to issues with people just trying to eat.
- 4:01Speaker 1: So we'll explain all that. That's coming up in Inconceivable
- 4:06Speaker 1: this afternoon. As always, we like to make ourselves available
- 4:10Speaker 1: to you if you'd like to question us or have
- 4:13Speaker 1: a comment on something. Or if you have a question
- 4:15Speaker 1: about something you don't know the answer to, feel free
- 4:18Speaker 1: to contact us. You can do it by way of
- 4:20Speaker 1: the text line. All you have to do is text
- 4:22Speaker 1: the word Texas, followed by your question or comment to 81530.
- 4:27Speaker 1: So you text the word Texas, followed by your question
- 4:30Speaker 1: or comment to 81530. Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
- 4:35Speaker 1: You can also reach us via the TalkBack microphone or
- 4:38Speaker 1: TalkBack feature through the iHeartRadio app. Real easy to do
- 4:42Speaker 1: and it's free. And all you have to do is
- 4:45Speaker 1: make sure you have the iHeartRadio app downloaded on your smartphone,
- 4:48Speaker 1: be it an iPhone or an Android. If you haven't already,
- 4:51Speaker 1: you can download it. Very easy to do. Go to
- 4:53Speaker 1: your app store and you can just download it. It's easy.
- 4:56Speaker 1: It doesn't cost anything. It's free. Once you have it downloaded,
- 5:00Speaker 1: then you search AM13 under the zone. You put that
- 5:03Speaker 1: in the search window or search bar and it will
- 5:05Speaker 1: pop right up. And when it does, then you'll see
- 5:08Speaker 1: two buttons. One's a little white button shaped like a triangle.
- 5:11Speaker 1: The other is a little red button. with a little
- 5:14Speaker 1: white microphone in it. That's the button for the talkback.
- 5:17Speaker 1: You press that button and you can leave us a
- 5:19Speaker 1: message and it'll go right into our system and we
- 5:23Speaker 1: can play it on the air. Obviously, you know, keep
- 5:27Speaker 1: it on air worthy, keep it clean and all that stuff.
- 5:30Speaker 1: But we'll play it if you have a message or
- 5:32Speaker 1: question for us. And you have up till 30 seconds
- 5:36Speaker 1: to leave us a message on that. So anyway, so
- 5:38Speaker 1: that's where All of that is. The producer, as I mentioned,
- 5:41Speaker 1: is Jake Herman, who had a pretty busy weekend. You
- 5:43Speaker 1: were kind of yo-yoing down and back, what, to the
- 5:46Speaker 1: greater Houston area once again?
- 5:48Speaker 2: Well, yeah, Friday night I spent in Houston after calling
- 5:52Speaker 2: the season opener of the Bastrop Bears high school football season.
- 5:56Speaker 2: They went to Montgomery and lost the Lake Creek Lions.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Rather surprising, I would say. But it is an opener,
- 6:05Speaker 1: and things that kind of happened... things that kind of
- 6:11Speaker 1: happened in season openers happened to them, like special teams.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I flipped over two or three times to watch what
- 6:18Speaker 1: was going on. Every time I flipped down, flipped over,
- 6:21Speaker 1: somebody was returning a kick or a punt for good distance,
- 6:24Speaker 1: if not a touchdown. So there was some I guess
- 6:26Speaker 1: some issues with the Bears' special teams.
- 6:28Speaker 2: There were two kick return touchdowns allowed, including one by
- 6:32Speaker 2: a freshman.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Oof.
- 6:33Speaker 2: And then there was a punt return that went about
- 6:36Speaker 2: 60 yards. It swung field position before the end of
- 6:39Speaker 2: the half. Bastrop was trying to pin him in deep,
- 6:42Speaker 2: and they ended up returning the punt past about the
- 6:45Speaker 2: original line of scrimmage.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I saw that one. Yeah. So anyway, those things happen
- 6:50Speaker 1: in season openers. That's why they're non-district, and that's why
- 6:53Speaker 1: they don't factor in uh, to, um, to what's going
- 6:58Speaker 1: to happen, uh, you know, in terms of making the playoffs.
- 7:00Speaker 1: So this week, who the bears have this week.
- 7:02Speaker 2: They'll be up in Killeen taking on the Bobcats of Chaparral.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Oh, Chaparral. Okay. All right. So then they, they have that. Okay.
- 7:08Speaker 1: And they, uh, they still have to play Brenham. Don't they?
- 7:11Speaker 2: Brenham is their fifth and final non-district game.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Yeah. Big test. Brenham looked good. They watched some of their,
- 7:18Speaker 1: you know, they whacked Huntsville the other night, a season
- 7:21Speaker 1: opener on Friday night. Anyway, um, So we're happy to
- 7:25Speaker 1: take your questions, comments, thoughts, and things of that nature.
- 7:30Speaker 1: And like I said, we're going to hear from Longhorn's
- 7:31Speaker 1: head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, coming up here in a few minutes.
- 7:36Speaker 1: The weekend of college football, zero week, also had a
- 7:41Speaker 1: couple of eyebrow raisers, most notably from Dublin, Ireland. I
- 7:46Speaker 1: think with North Carolina's win, um, that 15 to 10
- 7:50Speaker 1: win over TCU, uh, not exactly a, uh, work of
- 7:56Speaker 1: art on either side, unless maybe you're thinking it's, you know,
- 8:00Speaker 1: like an Andy Warhol pop art, where you've got some
- 8:03Speaker 1: weird things going on there, things like that, or one
- 8:06Speaker 1: of the stranger, uh, later in life works from Picasso
- 8:09Speaker 1: or something, you know what I mean? It wasn't, but
- 8:11Speaker 1: it was, it was entertaining. Um, And I know folks
- 8:15Speaker 1: in Fort Worth are not real happy about any number
- 8:18Speaker 1: of things. Going back to the fight that happened in
- 8:23Speaker 1: the locker room where you had a high-level transfer ejected
- 8:28Speaker 1: from the team or disqualified from the team, kicked off
- 8:30Speaker 1: the team. You had that. Sonny Dykes elected to go
- 8:34Speaker 1: for it on fourth down in plus territory twice rather
- 8:39Speaker 1: than kick field goals. They were stopped both times. That
- 8:42Speaker 1: was really big. North Carolina's defense is better, certainly. And then,
- 8:49Speaker 1: of course, they're waiting to see how the transfer quarterback
- 8:53Speaker 1: from Harvard does. And he had, at times, he showed
- 8:56Speaker 1: some things, and at times he looked a little bit
- 8:58Speaker 1: uneven as well. So, again, season openers. Now, it's different, obviously,
- 9:03Speaker 1: in college football in terms of how things ultimately weigh
- 9:06Speaker 1: in the computer on down the road when you're trying
- 9:08Speaker 1: to get to the college football playoff. It's different than
- 9:12Speaker 1: high school where Bastrop, what was the final the other night?
- 9:17Speaker 1: 52 to 34. Okay. So it's 52, 34. It could
- 9:20Speaker 1: have been 152 to 34 and it doesn't matter because
- 9:25Speaker 1: if Bastrop does well enough in district, they'll make the playoffs.
- 9:29Speaker 1: And then once you're in the playoffs, you put together
- 9:31Speaker 1: six wins, you win a state championship. So that's why
- 9:34Speaker 1: I'm using them as an example. difference between them and
- 9:37Speaker 1: college football, where every game does matter to an extent,
- 9:41Speaker 1: but the conference games clearly matter more than the non-conference games.
- 9:46Speaker 1: One big difference, obviously, with college football and the college
- 9:51Speaker 1: football playoff this year is that all four of the
- 9:56Speaker 1: conference champions from the Power Four Conferences, SEC, big 10, ACC,
- 10:02Speaker 1: and big 12, all four champions. And they have still
- 10:07Speaker 1: have championship games, conference championship games. So the four winners
- 10:11Speaker 1: of those games will receive automatic bids. That was not
- 10:16Speaker 1: the case. Remember, Duke won the ACC championship, but Duke
- 10:22Speaker 1: won't take 7-5 going into the game, so they went
- 10:26Speaker 1: up 8-5, and so they didn't get a bid. They
- 10:28Speaker 1: weren't high enough in the CFP rankings to do it.
- 10:33Speaker 1: But if you win one of those Power Four Conference championships,
- 10:37Speaker 1: you get an automatic bid. Same for Notre Dame if
- 10:39Speaker 1: they're in the top 12 of the CFP rankings. So
- 10:42Speaker 1: if you're in the top 12 and you're Notre Dame,
- 10:45Speaker 1: you get in.
- 10:46Speaker 2: I don't know how I feel about that. I mean,
- 10:47Speaker 2: if that was the case last year, we would have
- 10:49Speaker 2: had a Duke team in the playoffs that lost at
- 10:54Speaker 2: home by 25 points to Illinois on the road at UConn,
- 10:59Speaker 2: et cetera, and so forth.
- 11:01Speaker 1: And they didn't get in. No. So when you say
- 11:04Speaker 1: you don't know how you feel about it with Notre Dame,
- 11:06Speaker 1: what do you mean?
- 11:07Speaker 3: Well, no, I was going back to the... Oh, to Duke. Yeah,
- 11:09Speaker 3: to Duke and the SEC champion.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know how I feel about it with
- 11:12Speaker 2: Notre Dame because of their schedule, but that's a separate issue.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Well... Customarily, customarily, and ordinarily, the Notre Dame schedule stands
- 11:24Speaker 1: on its own merits. This year, they open with Wisconsin
- 11:30Speaker 1: this Sunday in Green Bay and play them at Lambeau Field.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Then they play Rice. Then they have Michigan State, and
- 11:39Speaker 1: they're at Purdue. They're at North Carolina. They have Stanford
- 11:43Speaker 1: at home. They're at BYU. They play Navy in Foxborough.
- 11:48Speaker 1: They have Miami, Boston College, SMU, and Syracuse. I think
- 11:51Speaker 1: they've got a representative enough schedule with the likes of Miami, clearly. Wisconsin,
- 11:57Speaker 1: we'll see about. BYU, especially being a road game. And
- 12:01Speaker 1: SMU is supposed to be good. So, I mean, we're
- 12:05Speaker 1: not comparing that schedule to like Indiana's schedule, remember.
- 12:10Speaker 2: I mean, they play two and a half good teams
- 12:13Speaker 2: and two of them are at home. It's hard to
- 12:16Speaker 2: know this early.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. It's, you know, it's hard. I think BYU
- 12:21Speaker 1: is going to be good.
- 12:22Speaker 2: I do, too.
- 12:23Speaker 3: I counted them.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Yeah. We don't know about North Carolina. I guess we'll
- 12:27Speaker 1: find out when we find out more about them, you know.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I think it was a definite step forward for Bill
- 12:32Speaker 1: Belichick's team. I think it was to get that win
- 12:37Speaker 1: over TCU. TCU, by the same token, was expected to
- 12:41Speaker 1: be middle to upper middle of the pack in the
- 12:44Speaker 1: Big 12. Yeah. not expected to be the contenders for
- 12:48Speaker 1: the conference championship. That's going to be Texas Tech and
- 12:50Speaker 1: BYU are going to be the top two there. But
- 12:56Speaker 1: it's a quality win, you know, and not in their
- 12:59Speaker 1: home stadium, obviously. It's, you know, on a neutral site.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Navy is probably going to be the best team in
- 13:08Speaker 1: the American this year. They got a real shot to be,
- 13:11Speaker 1: and they're playing that in Foxborough. So there's that. So
- 13:14Speaker 1: I think there's enough, in that Notre Dame schedule. They're
- 13:20Speaker 1: obviously playing no FCS schools. And other than, I'd say, Rice,
- 13:25Speaker 1: and then, of course, Purdue had its struggles last year.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Wisconsin was really bad last year.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they're going to be better, but they're
- 13:32Speaker 1: not going to be top rung. Stanford is looking rough. Yeah. Boy,
- 13:38Speaker 1: I know a lot's been made, and we'll talk about this.
- 13:41Speaker 1: A lot has been made about the attendance at the
- 13:43Speaker 1: USC game on Saturday afternoon. And from what I've read,
- 13:47Speaker 1: you know, a lot of people stayed away because it
- 13:49Speaker 1: was hot as blazes. It was 94 degrees. And somebody
- 13:52Speaker 1: said that sitting in those seats was like sitting on
- 13:56Speaker 1: hot plates. That it was just really, really difficult to do.
- 14:01Speaker 1: But I don't know if you, did you see any
- 14:03Speaker 1: of the Stanford-Hawaii game Saturday night? It's kind of late
- 14:07Speaker 1: Saturday night.
- 14:07Speaker 3: No, I didn't watch that one.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I watched, I saw the fourth quarter when Hawaii actually
- 14:11Speaker 1: had the lead. They were down like 16-0, came back
- 14:14Speaker 1: and had the lead in the fourth quarter. They're up
- 14:17Speaker 1: 27-23 inside the last four minutes of the game. Stanford
- 14:20Speaker 1: puts together a drive, they score a touchdown, and then
- 14:22Speaker 1: they get a scoop and score to end the ball game.
- 14:27Speaker 1: So they end up winning by 10 points. But it
- 14:29Speaker 1: was a lot, lot closer than that. But here's the thing.
- 14:33Speaker 1: This is a night game in Palo Alto where the
- 14:39Speaker 1: climate is much more temperate. I'm going to say this
- 14:43Speaker 1: is a healthy estimate. I'm going to say there were 15,000
- 14:48Speaker 1: people there. That's a healthy one. The true answer might
- 14:52Speaker 1: be around 12 or between 10 and 15. I mean,
- 14:54Speaker 1: it was scant and sparse looking at that crowd. The
- 14:58Speaker 1: USC thing, I kind of get it. Hot as blazes,
- 15:03Speaker 1: that sort of thing. I kind of get it on that,
- 15:06Speaker 1: even though this is supposed to be a big year
- 15:08Speaker 1: for them or whatever, but it was just stifling hot.
- 15:11Speaker 1: So you can kind of understand that a little bit.
- 15:13Speaker 1: I'd be interested to see if DKR, even though all
- 15:18Speaker 1: the tickets are sold, will everybody show up for that
- 15:21Speaker 1: game because it's a 2.30 kickoff on Saturday afternoon.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know about full in the second half.
- 15:28Speaker 2: If things go the way the Longhorns hope it does.
- 15:30Speaker 2: I don't know about full right at kick with fans
- 15:33Speaker 2: maybe going down and enjoying some of the things that
- 15:35Speaker 2: are going on around there.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Could be a lot of milling around Bevo Boulevard. It
- 15:38Speaker 1: could be a lot of people heading for Big Beertha.
- 15:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Could be that.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Yeah. I think it'll be close to full. I don't
- 15:45Speaker 2: think it'll look anything like those games in California.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Yeah, right. Exactly. And that was my point as well.
- 15:51Speaker 1: But anyway, so. So there was that. I watched some
- 15:56Speaker 1: other football. I'm trying to think who all I've watched.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Florida State?
- 15:59Speaker 1: I did watch some of Florida State. I've watched a
- 16:04Speaker 1: goodly chunk of Memphis UNLV.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Charles Huff?
- 16:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:08Speaker 1: He's 3-0 the last three years. Season opening wins as
- 16:14Speaker 1: a new head coach. Two years ago was Marshall. Last
- 16:17Speaker 1: year was Southern Miss. This year... it's Memphis, and somebody
- 16:22Speaker 1: said it's not out of the realm of possibility, I
- 16:23Speaker 1: was reading. He's a Maryland grad.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Mike Loxley's seat is not quite a hot plate like USC.
- 16:32Speaker 1: It's not quite like USC, but if it doesn't work
- 16:35Speaker 1: out there in Maryland, they said, could Charles Huff wind
- 16:38Speaker 1: up being at his fourth school in his many seasons?
- 16:43Speaker 1: It's not out of the realm of possibility, but he's
- 16:45Speaker 1: got Memphis off to a good start. All right, we've
- 16:48Speaker 1: got plenty of college football to dive into, the NFL
- 16:51Speaker 1: as well, and we'll take your questions as well. Up next,
- 16:54Speaker 1: we're going to hear from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkeesian
- 16:56Speaker 1: here on a Longhorns Monday on Sports Radio AM 13
- 16:59Speaker 1: Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. You got your
- 17:19Speaker 1: brown-eyed boy here with you on Monday. Both of us.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Your eyes are brown, aren't they?
- 17:25Speaker 2: Yeah, dark brown.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I noticed that. Your girlfriend had brown eyes?
- 17:30Speaker 5: No.
- 17:31Speaker 2: No, bluish green.
- 17:32Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Light blue or light green, however you want to describe it.
- 17:36Speaker 1: I'm married to a brown-eyed girl.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Ben Morrison, 81, today.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Happy but that's uh by the way when people ask
- 17:44Speaker 1: me is there anybody really that you haven't seen in
- 17:46Speaker 1: concert yet or from your concert any days of working
- 17:49Speaker 1: that you'd still like to see that guy and he's
- 17:53Speaker 1: not doing much in terms of touring anymore but if
- 17:56Speaker 1: he ever did i had an opportunity looks.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Like in glasgow next month.
- 18:00Speaker 1: See what i mean.
- 18:03Speaker 2: Good luck getting there.
- 18:04Speaker 1: You need the Longhorns to play over there. Yeah, right.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Linda and I are actually thinking about going over to
- 18:09Speaker 1: England and Scotland next summer on vacation instead of the
- 18:14Speaker 1: North Carolina coast. If we do, you know, maybe who
- 18:19Speaker 1: knows if he's over there. We'll see. All right. Today,
- 18:22Speaker 1: as we mentioned, it's Longhorns Monday, and we hear from
- 18:24Speaker 1: the head coach and players over on campus at the
- 18:28Speaker 1: press conference. So we bring it to you live. at
- 18:32Speaker 1: 1130 every monday morning right here on the zone and
- 18:35Speaker 1: on the iheart radio app real easy to listen to
- 18:38Speaker 1: it live but if you're not around at the time
- 18:40Speaker 1: you get a chance to hear it in its um
- 18:43Speaker 1: uh you might say edited form but hearing all the
- 18:46Speaker 1: answer let's start off with the opening comments from longwood's
- 18:48Speaker 1: head coach steve sarkisian.
- 18:50Speaker 5: Okay uh game week finally you know this is the
- 18:53Speaker 5: the exciting time of the year um Obviously in Austin,
- 18:57Speaker 5: Texas and on the 40 acres and here at DKR,
- 19:00Speaker 5: but I think around the country, you can feel the
- 19:02Speaker 5: excitement for this football season. And I think for us,
- 19:05Speaker 5: one thing that I'm so fired up for, for Longhorn Nation.
- 19:09Speaker 5: This is our fifth consecutive season where we're already sold
- 19:12Speaker 5: out for the entire season before the ball's even been
- 19:14Speaker 5: kicked off. And so credit to our fans, the support
- 19:17Speaker 5: they give us every time we go into DKR could
- 19:21Speaker 5: be more fired up for them and our team. And
- 19:24Speaker 5: I think it's been impactful. I think we're 20-1 in
- 19:27Speaker 5: our last 21 home games, and I think that's a
- 19:30Speaker 5: byproduct of we continue to get better as a program.
- 19:33Speaker 5: I think the atmosphere in DKR, definitely serves as a
- 19:36Speaker 5: home field advantage. So looking forward to that, looking forward
- 19:39Speaker 5: to the Bevo walk and seeing everybody there, looking forward
- 19:42Speaker 5: to greeting the students when I walk into the stadium
- 19:45Speaker 5: and all those things. So that part's exciting. Some things
- 19:49Speaker 5: that are also happening we've got a ribbon cutting for
- 19:51Speaker 5: our new football training complex this Friday. We've actually gotten
- 19:56Speaker 5: in there and started to practice in there, but all
- 19:59Speaker 5: the support and donors that made that thing possible, we
- 20:02Speaker 5: get to kind of honor them this Friday. And then
- 20:05Speaker 5: you look at the NFL and the cuts and everything
- 20:08Speaker 5: that happened yesterday, the idea that we've got 45 players
- 20:12Speaker 5: on active rosters, four on IR, 41 active. All of
- 20:16Speaker 5: our draft picks made the team. And obviously, and then
- 20:19Speaker 5: Ethan Burke is a free agent. Making the team is fantastic.
- 20:23Speaker 5: And so we're always fired up for our guys that
- 20:26Speaker 5: get an opportunity to extend their career. And we continually
- 20:29Speaker 5: are starting to see that number creep up and get
- 20:31Speaker 5: back to where it used to be in the mid-2000s.
- 20:34Speaker 5: And getting into the 50s is where we need to
- 20:36Speaker 5: get to. I would also say for us, I thought
- 20:40Speaker 5: last week really served us well. You know, last week,
- 20:43Speaker 5: you know, we did a mock week and we got
- 20:44Speaker 5: a lot of new faces, okay? And so when you
- 20:47Speaker 5: look at 48 scholarship additions on our roster, how we
- 20:51Speaker 5: go about a game week is new to them. It's
- 20:53Speaker 5: foreign to them. So I thought the mock week was
- 20:55Speaker 5: very important all the way up to the hotel Friday
- 20:58Speaker 5: night to, you know, pregame warmups on Saturday. So I
- 21:01Speaker 5: think all those things will serve us well to kind
- 21:04Speaker 5: of reduce a little bit of the anxiety on game
- 21:06Speaker 5: day and allow guys to cut it and cut it
- 21:08Speaker 5: loose and go play. So that'll be great as well.
- 21:12Speaker 5: I would say as far as Texas State goes, a
- 21:14Speaker 5: ton of respect for G.J. Kinney and the job he's
- 21:17Speaker 5: done at Texas State. Like what he's done, I think
- 21:19Speaker 5: they're 35 and 18 overall. You know, they've kind of
- 21:23Speaker 5: elevated as a program. They're now in the Pac-12 and
- 21:26Speaker 5: he's got a really good football team. It's a veteran team,
- 21:28Speaker 5: a lot of fourth, fifth, sixth year players. Obviously, he
- 21:32Speaker 5: starts with the quarterback. Brad Jackson's a heck of a player,
- 21:34Speaker 5: nearly 4,000 yards a year ago. He can hurt you
- 21:38Speaker 5: with his arm. He can kill you with his legs.
- 21:40Speaker 5: He's got two fantastic receivers in Sparks and Don, and
- 21:44Speaker 5: those guys can hurt you in their own rights. And
- 21:47Speaker 5: then you look at him defensively, the new defensive coordinator,
- 21:50Speaker 5: but a lot of their production is back. And then
- 21:54Speaker 5: you look at them on special teams. They've got an
- 21:55Speaker 5: elite kick returner, a very good punt returner. So all
- 21:58Speaker 5: those things add up to this is a heck of
- 22:00Speaker 5: a challenge for us in week one. We need a
- 22:02Speaker 5: great week of preparation, and that started this morning. And
- 22:06Speaker 5: just looking forward to the buildup to the game, and
- 22:08Speaker 5: then obviously showing up Saturday and watching our guys go
- 22:11Speaker 5: cut it loose and play football.
- 22:13Speaker 1: All right. That's the opening comments. Then to the questions.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Someone asked for an update on offensive lineman Trevor Goosby
- 22:22Speaker 1: and Lawrence Seymour, those guys, and also his thoughts on
- 22:26Speaker 1: what has developed at the safety position.
- 22:28Speaker 5: Both Trevor and Lawrence practiced today. I thought they both
- 22:30Speaker 5: looked really good. So that's a real positive for us.
- 22:34Speaker 5: At the safety spot, we really have four guys back
- 22:38Speaker 5: there that today we feel comfortable with. Obviously, Jelani is Jelani.
- 22:42Speaker 5: But when you have Kobe, Derek, and Jonah, those guys
- 22:44Speaker 5: have all made their own strides in their own way.
- 22:47Speaker 5: So the fact that we've got four guys back there
- 22:49Speaker 5: is comforting for us to know that they're all gonna
- 22:52Speaker 5: have to play Saturday. I mean, in case anybody didn't
- 22:54Speaker 5: get the memo, it's gonna be hot at 2.30 and DKR.
- 22:56Speaker 5: So- we're going to have to play a lot of
- 22:59Speaker 5: bodies in this ball game. And so it's not just
- 23:02Speaker 5: about getting your starters ready to play. We need to
- 23:04Speaker 5: have the two deep ready to play.
- 23:05Speaker 3: Okay.
- 23:06Speaker 1: In addition to the fact that they've been really, really
- 23:12Speaker 1: good at home, they've been very good unbeaten against G6
- 23:14Speaker 1: opponents in openers. And Sark was asked what has really
- 23:18Speaker 1: worked well for his staff in those contests.
- 23:21Speaker 5: That's a great point, you know, because, you know, training
- 23:24Speaker 5: camp can get drawn out. It can kind of get long.
- 23:27Speaker 5: And I think that's why next year it's actually going
- 23:29Speaker 5: to be shorter. So what we try to do in
- 23:31Speaker 5: training camp is to have days where we do focus
- 23:35Speaker 5: on some future opponents and some schemes and different ideas
- 23:39Speaker 5: and different thoughts. But knowing that when this week comes,
- 23:43Speaker 5: we are locked in on that first opponent. This year,
- 23:45Speaker 5: it happens to be Texas State. Like we are so
- 23:47Speaker 5: zoned in, locked in and ready to put our best
- 23:50Speaker 5: foot forward, whether it's schematically, whether it's who's playing, whether
- 23:53Speaker 5: it's how they play, what we ask them to do. Um,
- 23:57Speaker 5: but I don't, I don't neglect like these kids on
- 24:00Speaker 5: our team are human. And so they hear what, and
- 24:02Speaker 5: they read what everybody writes. And so we try to,
- 24:05Speaker 5: we try to give them a little dabble of it
- 24:07Speaker 5: throughout training camp. And then we put it to bed.
- 24:09Speaker 5: We kind of put it in the vault and then
- 24:11Speaker 5: we focus on this week of what we need to
- 24:13Speaker 5: do this week. And I think our players understand that, um,
- 24:16Speaker 5: they're obviously excited to play, to play a game, to
- 24:18Speaker 5: play another opponent. You could feel that, uh, today at practice. Um,
- 24:22Speaker 5: but I think you have to give them a little something, um,
- 24:25Speaker 5: or they're always going to wonder. And so now they
- 24:27Speaker 5: have a little idea of some of the days that
- 24:29Speaker 5: we did on the future ball games. And so they're like, okay,
- 24:34Speaker 5: now let's focus on this game plan and what we
- 24:36Speaker 5: need to do to be successful this week.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Okay. And then one more talking about how they plan
- 24:42Speaker 1: to handle the pace that Texas State historically under G.J.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Kenney likes to unfold and how the elements of the
- 24:54Speaker 1: speed sped up process of the game will affect his team.
- 24:56Speaker 5: Yeah I again I think we need to own the
- 24:58Speaker 5: tempo right and I think that starts with communication yeah
- 25:02Speaker 5: getting the call and getting lined up I think it's
- 25:05Speaker 5: imperative we get our cleats in the dirt ready to
- 25:07Speaker 5: play and we got our eyes in the right spot
- 25:10Speaker 5: um and and knowing like you have to you have
- 25:12Speaker 5: to play as if they're going to go fast and
- 25:15Speaker 5: then if they don't go fast you can settle down
- 25:17Speaker 5: but I think reacting to it you're going to be
- 25:19Speaker 5: too late and You know, we've spent a lot of
- 25:22Speaker 5: time on it, started on it, you know, really early
- 25:25Speaker 5: last week. And we obviously have tempo plays, and we've
- 25:28Speaker 5: had extra periods that are dedicated to that tempo and
- 25:31Speaker 5: the alignment, assignment, and communication. But again, I think one
- 25:35Speaker 5: of the keys is still striking people, still getting off blocks,
- 25:38Speaker 5: still playing fast. And so that's what we've been emphasizing.
- 25:41Speaker 5: And I think Coach Muschamp's done a really good job
- 25:44Speaker 5: of that, of getting our guys ready. Now, we got
- 25:46Speaker 5: to make that come to life on Saturday, right? We
- 25:49Speaker 5: got to put it on tape and prove us right
- 25:51Speaker 5: that we think we're ready to play. And so that's
- 25:53Speaker 5: what Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday are for. And then we'll walk
- 25:56Speaker 5: through Friday and be ready to go.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Okay. And then one more on the tail end of this.
- 26:00Speaker 1: How confident is he? that his team can do that
- 26:04Speaker 1: at a high level.
- 26:05Speaker 5: Well, I know we're going to play hard. I don't
- 26:08Speaker 5: question our effort, our intent, or our physicality. We're going
- 26:12Speaker 5: to play hard. Now, as always, I'm like you guys.
- 26:16Speaker 5: I got a chance to watch some of the games
- 26:18Speaker 5: this weekend, and you see guys jumping off sides. You
- 26:21Speaker 5: see formations. You see personal foul penalties for You know,
- 26:25Speaker 5: after a catch, that is a little bit of a
- 26:27Speaker 5: different rule. You see 12 guys on the field. You
- 26:30Speaker 5: see some of the stuff. And so to me, like
- 26:33Speaker 5: the situational master's piece of how important those special situations
- 26:37Speaker 5: are in early week, week one, week two type games,
- 26:40Speaker 5: those are the things that we're really trying to focus
- 26:42Speaker 5: in on to make sure that we don't have those lapses.
- 26:44Speaker 5: Only 10 guys on punt return. 12 guys on defense.
- 26:48Speaker 5: You know, hard count, we jump off sides. Those little
- 26:50Speaker 5: things are the things that we're really trying to focus
- 26:52Speaker 5: in on. But I don't question our effort, our physicality,
- 26:56Speaker 5: and our toughness. I think that'll show up Saturday.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Okay. We'll hear more from Sark coming up next hour.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Up next, Inconceivable on a Monday afternoon on Sports Radio
- 27:05Speaker 1: AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. Second
- 27:23Speaker 1: hour of the program here on Sports Radio AM 13
- 27:26Speaker 1: Under the Zone. Craig Wayne alongside the producer, Jay Carman.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us. Before we get into
- 27:32Speaker 1: what I wanted to start off this segment with, I
- 27:35Speaker 1: do need to have another comment about this. Because again,
- 27:37Speaker 1: somebody asked, do you happen to know if the UIL
- 27:40Speaker 1: will sanction DeSoto in any way due to them refusing
- 27:43Speaker 1: to shake hands with St. Thomas Aquinas after the coin flip?
- 27:47Speaker 1: I want to make sure folks understand me on this.
- 27:50Speaker 1: uh refusing to shake hands was incredibly poor sportsmanship uh
- 27:54Speaker 1: was it was not in in desoto uh the school
- 27:58Speaker 1: district said as much in uh their tweet uh they
- 28:04Speaker 1: did say we view this as an opportunity for a
- 28:05Speaker 1: young man to learn and grow from their mistakes uh
- 28:09Speaker 1: we take full responsibility for the conduct of our players
- 28:11Speaker 1: and are committed to ensuring our student-athletes uphold the standards
- 28:15Speaker 1: of sportsmanship and character that our program and community expect,
- 28:21Speaker 1: which is all good stuff to hear from them. Is
- 28:23Speaker 1: there a rule that says you have to shake hands? No,
- 28:26Speaker 1: there's not. But it shows an incredible lack of sportsmanship
- 28:30Speaker 1: on the part of DeSoto. And then they go out
- 28:33Speaker 1: and just get drummed. They're down 38-0 at the half
- 28:36Speaker 1: to St. Thomas Aquinas. And then they score two touchdowns
- 28:40Speaker 1: against the backups. They lose 38-14. Here's some other things
- 28:43Speaker 1: to know about DeSoto. They've won three state championships in
- 28:48Speaker 1: the last four years. They've built almost a little bit
- 28:51Speaker 1: of a dynasty. And now, and that was all at
- 28:54Speaker 1: the 6A level. They beat Vandegrift by 25 points back
- 28:58Speaker 1: in 23. They, or in 22. In 23, they beat
- 29:06Speaker 1: Summer Creek by 60 in the state championship. And last year,
- 29:10Speaker 1: they won by 28 over City King. Their average margin
- 29:13Speaker 1: of victory in the state championships is 38 points overall.
- 29:16Speaker 1: That does nothing to excuse what my point was going
- 29:20Speaker 1: to be about this. A large measure of the success
- 29:23Speaker 1: that they've had has been built on intimidation. And it's
- 29:28Speaker 1: been like that. I credit St. Thomas Aquinas for not
- 29:31Speaker 1: being intimidated by it and going out and playing their game.
- 29:35Speaker 1: But does it have any place for it? No. Am
- 29:38Speaker 1: I surprised? No. really. They have been historically a really
- 29:43Speaker 1: tough district with Duncanville and Cedar Hill and Waxahachie as
- 29:49Speaker 1: some teams that are some of the best in 6A.
- 29:52Speaker 1: And they're in South Dallas County. They have to have
- 29:54Speaker 1: a pretty tough skin on that. Again, excuses nothing of this.
- 29:58Speaker 1: I'm just explaining why Some of that attitude may have
- 30:01Speaker 1: happened over time. I think it's safe to assume that
- 30:05Speaker 1: you're not going to see that again from DeSoto, that
- 30:08Speaker 1: they will be shaking hands. But no, they're not going
- 30:10Speaker 1: to be sanctioned or anything about that. It's just poor taste.
- 30:14Speaker 1: It's poor sportsmanship, no doubt about it. Okay. Cameron Parker's here.
- 30:20Speaker 1: And so I asked him to come in so we
- 30:22Speaker 1: could talk a little bit about Scotty Scheffler winning the
- 30:26Speaker 1: Tour Championship, winning the FedEx Cup. Was it? Poor sportsmanship
- 30:32Speaker 1: for Scotty to put his hat over the camera there
- 30:35Speaker 1: in a clubhouse when he wanted a moment or two
- 30:38Speaker 1: with Meredith and the boys.
- 30:39Speaker 3: Yeah, from what I saw, it wasn't a camera operated
- 30:44Speaker 3: by an actual cameraman. It was kind of like one
- 30:46Speaker 3: of those remote cameras and stuff. And I think we
- 30:50Speaker 3: now know Scotty's personality is that he'll do media when
- 30:53Speaker 3: it's time for media, but when it's time for family
- 30:55Speaker 3: time and time to celebrate, with friends and family members,
- 30:59Speaker 3: he wants that privacy.
- 31:01Speaker 1: You got to respect that about him, right?
- 31:04Speaker 3: Everything he does, you know, in the world of Bryce
- 31:06Speaker 3: and the Shambos, in a world of Roy McIlroy's, Scotty
- 31:10Speaker 3: Scheffler is Scotty Scheffler.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Yeah, he is. And boy, was he yesterday on the
- 31:14Speaker 1: golf course. I mean, I watched him on Saturday and
- 31:16Speaker 1: it's on these down three going the final round and
- 31:18Speaker 1: I've seen him do what he did yesterday many, many times. However,
- 31:21Speaker 1: Victor Hovland looked really, really good, and Hovland had already
- 31:24Speaker 1: beaten him in that Monday playoff in Hartford. And I
- 31:27Speaker 1: couldn't help but smile watching. Oh, this is Texas against
- 31:30Speaker 1: Oklahoma State. Yeah. You know? And if Ludwig Oberg had
- 31:35Speaker 1: been close enough, there would have been a three-way Texas-Oklahoma
- 31:37Speaker 1: State and Texas Tech. But Scheffler did his Scotty-type things yesterday.
- 31:43Speaker 3: And I know Hovland for sure not— can' t remember— for Scotty,
- 31:47Speaker 3: but they, they used to play a golf match, play
- 31:50Speaker 3: a tournament there in the fall at East Lake and
- 31:53Speaker 3: Texas was a part of that. Both the men's and
- 31:55Speaker 3: women's golf teams. I know Oklahoma state was at one point.
- 31:58Speaker 3: So a lot of history there, both collegiate, both on
- 32:01Speaker 3: the college sides and professional. And for Scotty, I'm not
- 32:04Speaker 3: sure how much, you know, he, he loved that golf course,
- 32:06Speaker 3: but I felt like despite how much we make fun
- 32:10Speaker 3: of the FedEx cup, Craig and the tour championship.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Um, I know you look down your nose at it.
- 32:16Speaker 3: A lot of people do. I felt like that was
- 32:18Speaker 3: an important tournament to win for Scottie Scheffler, to win
- 32:20Speaker 3: the FedEx Cup, because I believe he's only won it once,
- 32:24Speaker 3: if I remember correctly.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Two years ago, right? Two years ago.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Yeah, Tommy won it last year. I believe Hovland won
- 32:29Speaker 3: it two years ago. And not to discredit them, because
- 32:33Speaker 3: Tommy had a great season a year ago.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Hovland did too. But it never.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Scottie's been the best player on the planet, besides Rory McIlroy,
- 32:41Speaker 3: the last couple of years. And he only has one
- 32:43Speaker 3: of these these championships doesn't really doesn't sit right with
- 32:47Speaker 3: me maybe you know it could be the format the
- 32:49Speaker 3: venue and of course how the FedEx Cup playoffs work
- 32:53Speaker 3: but also I think for Scottie too we've kind of
- 32:55Speaker 3: been looking for a little bit more in that final
- 32:57Speaker 3: tournament and I think some years he's gone in exhausted
- 33:01Speaker 3: just from the long season in the major championships and
- 33:04Speaker 3: of course gearing up for the Ryder Cup or President's Cup,
- 33:07Speaker 3: but I felt like yesterday was an important tournament for
- 33:09Speaker 3: him to win, and he did it coming back from
- 33:12Speaker 3: three strokes, and boy, I mean, he hit the crap
- 33:15Speaker 3: out of the golf ball all day long. His ball
- 33:17Speaker 3: striking was phenomenal. His putting was great, and Hovland, you know,
- 33:21Speaker 3: he had, what, three, four putts that, you know, just
- 33:23Speaker 3: lipped out or burned the edge, and That's.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Golf for you.
- 33:27Speaker 3: You know, sometimes those putts go in and sometimes they
- 33:30Speaker 3: lip out. So I think that's a huge win for
- 33:32Speaker 3: Scottie Scheffler.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Especially coming off whatever hoof and mouth disease or whatever
- 33:36Speaker 1: the heck he had going on. Ear, throat, and what
- 33:39Speaker 1: is it? It was a mouth, hand, foot, and mouth.
- 33:42Speaker 1: What is that? I said hoof and mouth, like livestock.
- 33:45Speaker 1: You know, like I said that on purpose, like sheep
- 33:48Speaker 1: get and things like that. It's a virus thing. It's
- 33:52Speaker 1: one of those virus things.
- 33:54Speaker 3: Is that from having like a kid or from what?
- 33:58Speaker 1: How do you get that disease? I've heard football players
- 34:00Speaker 1: get locker room stuff.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Oh, kind of like athlete's foot. But kids get it.
- 34:05Speaker 2: I mean, this is for like toddlers at preschool who
- 34:08Speaker 2: come home from daycare with hand, foot, and mouth disease.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. But you could probably get it out of
- 34:13Speaker 1: a clubhouse locker room too, I would say. But anyway,
- 34:16Speaker 1: my point was going to be, I agree with you.
- 34:20Speaker 1: And maybe this lends credence to your point about the
- 34:22Speaker 1: whole thing about the FedEx Cup and all this, because
- 34:26Speaker 1: there were those who were ready to make the case,
- 34:29Speaker 1: if he did not win, that maybe he was not
- 34:34Speaker 1: the top golfer of the year.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:37Speaker 1: That he might not. That there were two or three
- 34:39Speaker 1: different people, they said, could possibly, who had won more
- 34:43Speaker 1: events than he won. Now, he won... what, two weeks
- 34:47Speaker 1: ago at Memphis. Two of the last three tournaments. Yeah,
- 34:49Speaker 1: and then he had that, whatever, the hand, foot, mouth
- 34:52Speaker 1: thing that limited him. He still finished 12th in St. Louis.
- 34:55Speaker 1: And then comes on and does this. So it gives
- 35:00Speaker 1: him the same number of wins as, who am I
- 35:04Speaker 1: thinking of? Who's our U.S. Open champ? Wyndham Clark. Wyndham Clark,
- 35:08Speaker 1: who some folks were kind of trumpeting him. Yeah. Because
- 35:13Speaker 1: he won a major. Yeah. And he had won three events. Yeah.
- 35:16Speaker 1: And Scottie only won two events with no major. He
- 35:19Speaker 1: had whatever, 18 gazillion second place finishes. What, he had
- 35:22Speaker 1: 11 or something like that? Some ridiculous amount? Or five
- 35:25Speaker 1: second place finishes and like 11 in the top five?
- 35:29Speaker 1: I know. It was some ridiculous number that was way
- 35:33Speaker 1: outpaced everybody else.
- 35:34Speaker 3: 13 top five finishes and 10 top three finishes.
- 35:37Speaker 1: That's it. That's it.
- 35:39Speaker 3: And a down year. This was a down year for
- 35:42Speaker 3: Scottie Scheffler. And he had 10 top three finishes in
- 35:45Speaker 3: three wins. There's some guys out there who didn't have
- 35:48Speaker 3: any top three finishes.
- 35:51Speaker 1: So here's the thing that boggles my mind. He gets
- 35:55Speaker 1: $ 10 million for winning yesterday. And he now, I read
- 36:00Speaker 1: this this morning, his career tour earnings, just career tour earnings.
- 36:07Speaker 1: I'm not talking about endorsements or commercials or anything like that.
- 36:12Speaker 1: Just what he's won on tour now is at $ 130, 400, 000. $ 130. 4 million.
- 36:21Speaker 1: That passes Tiger's 26-year reign. He won $ 121 million during
- 36:27Speaker 1: his career, including winning the FedEx Cup, where you get
- 36:29Speaker 1: that extra push, that bonus. So I think it's mind-boggling
- 36:34Speaker 1: to think about. And Tiger, very classy tweet from Tiger.
- 36:37Speaker 1: congratulating him, said three wins, five runner-ups, and finishing the
- 36:42Speaker 1: season number one. Those are some numbers to be proud of.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Incredible consistency all season long. Congrats on a historic season, Scotty.
- 36:49Speaker 1: That was from Tiger yesterday. So pretty impressive all the
- 36:54Speaker 1: way around for what Scotty did.
- 36:56Speaker 3: I mean, obviously Tiger's like a zillionaire, but can you
- 36:58Speaker 3: imagine if he played with the purses that are set
- 37:01Speaker 3: up today?
- 37:01Speaker 1: Unbelievable, right? Right, yeah. No doubt about it.
- 37:05Speaker 3: Because Scottie, the amount of wins that he has now
- 37:08Speaker 3: in his career, I believe Tiger got to it at 21,
- 37:11Speaker 3: 22 years old.
- 37:12Speaker 1: Yeah. He would have, yeah, he would have. Yeah, Scottie's
- 37:14Speaker 1: at 22 wins. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Okay. Cowboys made the
- 37:19Speaker 1: roster cuts. Jayden Blue didn't make the roster. He may
- 37:23Speaker 1: get picked up. Well, I'd put it this way. The
- 37:25Speaker 1: Cowboys at the very least would put him on the
- 37:26Speaker 1: practice squad. At least. If he's not picked up. But
- 37:28Speaker 1: there may be enough interest. On him doing that. Okay,
- 37:31Speaker 1: so you're not watching the Cowboys, but you do keep
- 37:33Speaker 1: up with them. So do you like the roster that
- 37:34Speaker 1: they have? I like the coaching staff. I like the
- 37:37Speaker 1: moves Jerry Jones made in the offseason. I think they
- 37:40Speaker 1: had an incredible draft.
- 37:41Speaker 3: I mean, most Cowboy fans have seen how good Caleb
- 37:45Speaker 3: Downs has looked in practice. And of course, it's just practice.
- 37:49Speaker 3: You know, they're just playing against each other there. But,
- 37:52Speaker 3: you know, I think as a Cowboy fan, you can
- 37:55Speaker 3: feel optimistic, I think, about this season. But then, Craig,
- 37:58Speaker 3: you're smiling there because you know what happens when Cowboy
- 38:01Speaker 3: fans feel optimistic. They get their heart tripped out by,
- 38:04Speaker 3: I don't know, Aaron Rodgers or the Green Bay Packers.
- 38:06Speaker 1: But here's the thing about all that, and I don't
- 38:09Speaker 1: disagree with you, but here's the thing. They're not the
- 38:12Speaker 1: only team that this happens to. No, no. This happens
- 38:16Speaker 1: to a lot of teams in the NFL. Think about
- 38:19Speaker 1: it if you're like a Chargers fan. Think how many
- 38:24Speaker 1: times that they've, You know, had their hearts ripped out.
- 38:27Speaker 3: All seven fans, you know, really have had their hearts
- 38:30Speaker 3: ripped out.
- 38:30Speaker 1: All right. I'll see your seven and raise your buffalo. Yeah.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Think about buffalo. That's true. Detroit. Yeah.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Detroit. You know?
- 38:39Speaker 3: Well, even with all the moves the Cowboys have made,
- 38:41Speaker 3: I do not think they can match up against the L.A.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Rams defensive line. I mean, you got to be.
- 38:46Speaker 3: Smiling through your teeth with Aaron Donald returning, Miles Garrett.
- 38:50Speaker 3: I mean, good luck.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Good luck guarding those guys. I'm curious to see I
- 38:56Speaker 1: know Aaron Donald is in shape he's been working for
- 38:58Speaker 1: several months but I've often heard coaches say there's a
- 39:01Speaker 1: difference between shape and playing shape football shape so I
- 39:07Speaker 1: won't look down my nose at it he's a three
- 39:10Speaker 1: time defensive player of the year they have to start
- 39:12Speaker 1: the clock all over again on his hall of fame
- 39:16Speaker 1: way here at that time now but I'm sure he
- 39:18Speaker 1: doesn't care about that so yeah we'll see.
- 39:21Speaker 2: We'll see how that goes did you notice he deflected
- 39:23Speaker 2: though He didn't answer if he's back in on the Cowboys.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Oh, no, absolutely not. There's just no chance. I didn't
- 39:28Speaker 1: ask because I know that. answer. I know the answer.
- 39:31Speaker 1: They must qualify for the NFC Championship before he'll watch
- 39:34Speaker 1: them again.
- 39:35Speaker 3: Now, Harge, he's all back in. Him and Mark Henry, yeah.
- 39:39Speaker 3: I mean, they might get... Were they ever completely out
- 39:42Speaker 3: on them? They might be getting paid by Jerry Jones.
- 39:44Speaker 3: Were they ever completely out?
- 39:45Speaker 1: That's true. I mean, nobody's been as out on them...
- 39:49Speaker 1: that started out a loyal fan as you have been
- 39:52Speaker 1: in terms of being completely out on him. So I
- 39:56Speaker 1: just wanted to check the pulse on this deal. I
- 40:00Speaker 1: wasn't expecting to come in to say, I'm ready. I'll
- 40:02Speaker 1: be watching Sunday night when they play the Giants. You're
- 40:04Speaker 1: not going to watch, right? I don't think so.
- 40:06Speaker 3: But I will say, I think the NFC East is
- 40:09Speaker 3: up for grabs. You could tell me now, In January that, hey,
- 40:14Speaker 3: the Giants won it or the Eagles won it, the
- 40:16Speaker 3: Commanders won it, the Cowboys won it. And I think
- 40:18Speaker 3: you have an argument for all four teams in that division.
- 40:23Speaker 1: Commanders. Commanders.
- 40:24Speaker 4: Really?
- 40:25Speaker 3: Jaden Daniels is a top five quarterback, right?
- 40:28Speaker 1: You don't think so?
- 40:29Speaker 2: I think he can be, but they got to keep
- 40:31Speaker 2: him upright.
- 40:32Speaker 1: That's true. And they.
- 40:34Speaker 2: had a center that it was that they cut yesterday
- 40:37Speaker 2: who was the starter for three weeks of camp they
- 40:40Speaker 2: let tyler biadish go they never addressed it i keep
- 40:43Speaker 2: waiting all day for an alert that they fix the
- 40:44Speaker 2: center situation they don't know who the center is and let.
- 40:47Speaker 1: Me tell you they just know it's not i think
- 40:50Speaker 1: they're still fixing the sewer in the stadium and then
- 40:52Speaker 1: they gotta get to the center get to that all
- 40:54Speaker 1: right uh the last thing you want to go back
- 40:55Speaker 1: to golf um Live Golf, they've been saying, we're out,
- 41:01Speaker 1: we're in, we're in, we're out, or people are saying
- 41:03Speaker 1: they're out. They're saying we're in, and yet we're hearing
- 41:05Speaker 1: they're getting ready to do massive staff layoffs. Will they
- 41:08Speaker 1: be back in 2027?
- 41:09Speaker 3: I think they'll be back, but it might be, it
- 41:12Speaker 3: will be a completely different look from what we've seen
- 41:15Speaker 3: of Live Golf the last three, four years, and we're
- 41:18Speaker 3: seeing all these cryptic posts from, you know, Bryson DeChambeau,
- 41:21Speaker 3: who on Instagram said it was a good run. Does
- 41:24Speaker 3: that mean, like, he's done with Live, and The new
- 41:28Speaker 3: PGA Tour commissioner, Brian Rolap, who spoke with me this
- 41:32Speaker 3: past week, said they're not going to roll out that
- 41:34Speaker 3: returning program player like they did for Patrick Reed and
- 41:38Speaker 3: Brooks Koepka.
- 41:39Speaker 1: What did he say? He said, I don't see a pathway? Yeah.
- 41:43Speaker 6: Ah.
- 41:43Speaker 3: And that includes Bryson and Rom, because remember, beginning of
- 41:46Speaker 3: the season, they offered them a chance. Okay, join now
- 41:50Speaker 3: or forever hold your peace, as you might say. And
- 41:53Speaker 3: it looks like Rom and Bryson and some of those
- 41:56Speaker 3: guys decided to go down with the ship. Now, of course,
- 41:59Speaker 3: they may have been signed to a contract, and I
- 42:02Speaker 3: think Koepka's contract was up, and I think Reid's contract
- 42:05Speaker 3: was up.
- 42:06Speaker 1: Who knows?
- 42:06Speaker 3: Those contracts were never publicly made available, so we don't
- 42:09Speaker 3: really know, and who knows? It seems like a lot
- 42:12Speaker 3: of those players have not gotten paid for most of
- 42:14Speaker 3: their contracts, so if it does return next year, Craig,
- 42:18Speaker 3: I'm not sure. It may be Jon Rahm playing, and
- 42:20Speaker 3: Greg Norman might be with him, and possibly Phil Mickelson
- 42:24Speaker 3: if he ever shows his face in public again, but
- 42:27Speaker 3: If you're Bryson, he's got a YouTube following. He may
- 42:30Speaker 3: just end up playing YouTube golf next year in the
- 42:33Speaker 3: four majors. And Rahm, it seems like he's going to
- 42:36Speaker 3: try and make a return to more. He was willing
- 42:39Speaker 3: to try to make more return, more of the DP
- 42:41Speaker 3: World Tour offense, but it seemed like the DP World
- 42:43Speaker 3: Tour reached a contract agreement with the PGA Tour to
- 42:46Speaker 3: kind of push out live golf players. So right now
- 42:50Speaker 3: it does not look good for guys on the live
- 42:53Speaker 3: golf tour. And who knows what, what it'll look like
- 42:56Speaker 3: next season, Greg, but it'll look completely different.
- 42:58Speaker 1: Final thing here. Linda asked this question yesterday when we
- 43:01Speaker 1: were watching the ceremony. Brian Rolap, right? Is that a toupee?
- 43:06Speaker 1: I haven't seen a good picture of him. Do we
- 43:09Speaker 1: have one? That part looks pretty definite. That's why we
- 43:13Speaker 1: weren't sure. First, she raised the question. I said, I
- 43:16Speaker 1: don't know. Some toupees are a little better... done than others.
- 43:22Speaker 1: And I'm asking the wrong person, asking Cameron about a
- 43:24Speaker 1: head here, but, but yeah.
- 43:26Speaker 3: And I haven't gotten, gotten fitted for a toupee. No,
- 43:29Speaker 3: I don't think I ever will.
- 43:30Speaker 1: But when you are going to see a bad rug,
- 43:33Speaker 1: watch the Dodgers pregame and postgame with Jerry Harrison's in
- 43:35Speaker 1: the studio. I mean, it looks like they just dropped
- 43:38Speaker 1: it right on top of the dome. It's, it's not good.
- 43:41Speaker 1: It looks like you could practice chipping off of it.
- 43:43Speaker 1: Oh no.
- 43:44Speaker 3: Is it like Tobias Junque from rest of development with
- 43:47Speaker 3: his hair plugs there?
- 43:48Speaker 1: It's bad.
- 43:49Speaker 3: That's what we're working with here.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. So I don't know. I don't know. You
- 43:56Speaker 1: may have a bad.
- 43:56Speaker 3: Toupee, Craig, but I think he's exactly what the PGA
- 44:00Speaker 3: Tour needed in terms of kind of beating up. And
- 44:03Speaker 3: the match play format that will begin next season, I'm
- 44:06Speaker 3: excited for it. I'm not sure every golfer is excited
- 44:09Speaker 3: for it, but I think it's going to bring a
- 44:11Speaker 3: new dynamic, and at least it'll keep, I think, more
- 44:14Speaker 3: eyes watching than in years past the Tour champions.
- 44:17Speaker 1: What are they going to call the event here across
- 44:20Speaker 1: the highway from us? Where are they going to call that?
- 44:22Speaker 1: It won't be the good, good classic anymore. No, it's gone. Bad, bad.
- 44:27Speaker 3: Actually, I was talking with a few people today about it.
- 44:30Speaker 3: You know, it's being played at the Omni Barton Creek,
- 44:32Speaker 3: so obviously Omni, that would kind of make sense. Maybe
- 44:37Speaker 3: I think Yetis possibly could be involved. I'm not sure,
- 44:40Speaker 3: but what an unfortunate look for the game of golf
- 44:44Speaker 3: in Austin. Of course, it's no one's fault here, but
- 44:47Speaker 3: of course, it's associated with this tournament and now you're
- 44:50Speaker 3: without a sponsor in We are two months away from it.
- 44:55Speaker 3: November 11th, I believe, or November 5th or 6th is
- 44:59Speaker 3: the week of that. It's LSU weekend, I know.
- 45:02Speaker 1: 14th. Saturday is the 14th. So it's through the 11th
- 45:05Speaker 1: through the 15th or whatever it is.
- 45:07Speaker 3: They will find a sponsor for it, and they should,
- 45:09Speaker 3: because I'm hoping for a great golf tournament. But, yeah,
- 45:13Speaker 3: maybe don't post an advertisement of a man pushing down
- 45:17Speaker 3: a female.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Probably not a good idea. Probably not a good idea.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Thank you. Thank you for coming by. That's Cameron Parker.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Cameron will be with us on Wednesday because we're going
- 45:27Speaker 1: to talk about something else on Wednesday with regard to
- 45:30Speaker 1: Texas and Texas State opening their season on Saturday. We'll
- 45:33Speaker 1: get to that when we get to Wednesday. Up next,
- 45:35Speaker 1: we'll get to more from Sark here on 13 Under
- 45:37Speaker 1: the Zone. Probably not going to be very mystic on Saturday.
- 45:43Speaker 1: He's going to be hot and clear and sunny. on
- 45:47Speaker 1: saturday but happy birthday nevertheless for the great van morrison
- 45:50Speaker 1: who's 81 today into the mystic one of his hits
- 45:54Speaker 1: as we continue on a longhorns monday here on 1300
- 45:56Speaker 1: the zone on the text on our man c pal
- 46:00Speaker 1: said hook up scotty what a great longhorn beautiful family
- 46:02Speaker 1: and his kids looked like mama uh yeah bennett and
- 46:07Speaker 1: uh remy i think is the.
- 46:08Speaker 2: Other one wonder which one of them gave him the
- 46:10Speaker 2: hand foot and mouth.
- 46:12Speaker 1: Hopefully none of his kids. Hopefully maybe if it happened,
- 46:15Speaker 1: it happened somewhere else because his kids didn't have it. Oh, okay.
- 46:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess we would have known.
- 46:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, if it had been that kind of thing.
- 46:23Speaker 1: But anyway, okay, let's move back to Longhorn stuff here
- 46:29Speaker 1: on this Longhorn Monday and hearing from Head Coach Steve
- 46:31Speaker 1: Sarkeesian from the weekly news conference. This was the first
- 46:35Speaker 1: one of the season this morning. You heard it live
- 46:37Speaker 1: here at 1130. and he will every Monday during football
- 46:41Speaker 1: season here on 1300 The Zone. So other things that
- 46:45Speaker 1: he was asked about was, is he looking toward and
- 46:50Speaker 1: has he seen a palpable energy level from his guys
- 46:57Speaker 1: as they look to all the hype and excitement that
- 47:01Speaker 1: surrounds a season opener for this football program?
- 47:04Speaker 5: It was awesome.
- 47:04Speaker 1: It was fun.
- 47:05Speaker 5: You know, we always do in practice– When we get
- 47:08Speaker 5: done with stretch, you know, one player gets called out
- 47:11Speaker 5: to do horn jacks. And today it happened to be
- 47:14Speaker 5: Hero Canoe, right? Coach Becton chose Hero Canoe. And, like,
- 47:18Speaker 5: you could feel it right away. And when you felt him,
- 47:21Speaker 5: you could feel everybody else. It was almost like it
- 47:24Speaker 5: was simmering and then away we went, you know. And
- 47:27Speaker 5: so that's the stuff, like, I always have to remind
- 47:29Speaker 5: our guys and myself, like, I know we're in this
- 47:33Speaker 5: NIL revenue sharing era and these guys are getting paid
- 47:36Speaker 5: and all these things. When you really look at it,
- 47:38Speaker 5: they're still kids, right? And they still love this game
- 47:41Speaker 5: of football and they love playing the game of football.
- 47:44Speaker 5: And that was a great example of it. They look
- 47:46Speaker 5: like little kids that were just excited to get back
- 47:48Speaker 5: to getting ready to play another opponent and not just
- 47:51Speaker 5: keep hitting themselves, right? And so I thought that was encouraging.
- 47:55Speaker 5: We've got a lot of guys like that, but I
- 47:57Speaker 5: thought Hero was a great example. I think Jelani is
- 47:59Speaker 5: a great example of that from an energy standpoint. I mean,
- 48:02Speaker 5: those two guys in particular really stand out to me.
- 48:04Speaker 5: When I think of, like, who's bringing that juice, Ryan
- 48:07Speaker 5: Niblett's another guy. If we called on him, he would
- 48:09Speaker 5: have went out there and done a backflip first and
- 48:12Speaker 5: then got everybody going. So we've got some of those
- 48:15Speaker 5: guys from an energy standpoint that serve that way.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Okay. He was then asked about how crucial is it
- 48:21Speaker 1: and what he has seen in terms of the connection
- 48:24Speaker 1: being established between Arch Manning and the receivers and in specific,
- 48:31Speaker 1: the newer receivers like Cam Coleman coming in, those guys
- 48:35Speaker 1: and the type of, of connection and connectivity those guys
- 48:41Speaker 1: have put together.
- 48:42Speaker 5: You know, I think it's time on task, you know,
- 48:44Speaker 5: and I, and I say that there's time on task physically, right? It's,
- 48:48Speaker 5: How many times can you throw an out route to
- 48:50Speaker 5: the same guy over and over and get a feel
- 48:52Speaker 5: for how he runs that route? But I think it's
- 48:55Speaker 5: time on task watching tape. I think it's time on
- 48:58Speaker 5: task having lunch or a dinner and being around one
- 49:01Speaker 5: another in the locker room, in the training room, just
- 49:03Speaker 5: getting to know there's a feel component to it all, right?
- 49:06Speaker 5: And you think about some of the best... you know,
- 49:08Speaker 5: in the NFL, even like relationships, those guys who have
- 49:11Speaker 5: been together for a long time, they almost think like
- 49:13Speaker 5: one another. And because we can't give them every single
- 49:17Speaker 5: look exactly how it's going to happen there. There's definitely
- 49:19Speaker 5: going to be some reaction to a look and I
- 49:22Speaker 5: think that's where like I you know Ryan and Arch
- 49:26Speaker 5: and Emmett and Arch they've got banked reps Cam I
- 49:30Speaker 5: give him a lot of credit he's been very intentional
- 49:32Speaker 5: to be close to be close to Arch and I
- 49:34Speaker 5: think Arch has been intentional with him as well because
- 49:37Speaker 5: They know they've got some ground to make up, and
- 49:39Speaker 5: I think their rapport is really good. So I would
- 49:42Speaker 5: say time on task, physical and non-physical time on task
- 49:46Speaker 5: of just being with one another.
- 49:47Speaker 1: Okay, that's big. And has he noticed some of his
- 49:51Speaker 1: younger guys, and who might they be forcing the issue,
- 49:54Speaker 1: trying to make sure they get some playing time?
- 49:56Speaker 5: I would say there's a lot of them. Some of
- 49:58Speaker 5: them are at a little bit more of a log
- 50:00Speaker 5: jam at their position, right? But, I mean, Jermaine, that's
- 50:03Speaker 5: an easy one. Jermaine is clearly, he's shown that. um
- 50:07Speaker 5: Richard Wesley has shown that Derek Cooper's shown that um
- 50:10Speaker 5: but there's other guys that maybe would surprise you Trey
- 50:13Speaker 5: Davis is showing us that you know Rocky Cummings has
- 50:16Speaker 5: shown us that um so we're seeing different guys at
- 50:19Speaker 5: different spots start to elevate you remember these guys now
- 50:23Speaker 5: have had a month of where they've improved and gotten
- 50:25Speaker 5: better to go along with what they did in the
- 50:27Speaker 5: summer to go along with what they did in spring
- 50:29Speaker 5: and so Guys are elevating and guys are showing us
- 50:32Speaker 5: that they can be counted on more and more and more.
- 50:35Speaker 5: Now we'll find out, right, when the lights come on,
- 50:37Speaker 5: how do they perform? And I think it's important for
- 50:39Speaker 5: us as a staff to instill confidence in them that
- 50:43Speaker 5: we believe in them. If we didn't believe in them,
- 50:45Speaker 5: they wouldn't be out there. And so, you know, the
- 50:47Speaker 5: goal was that these guys all go out there and
- 50:49Speaker 5: play and play well. I am a realist. We're not
- 50:52Speaker 5: going to be perfect. You know, we're going to make
- 50:53Speaker 5: some mistakes. We might line up wrong. We might run
- 50:56Speaker 5: a wrong route. Let's go on to the next play.
- 50:59Speaker 5: And then you learn about their mental toughness and their
- 51:01Speaker 5: perseverance to move on to the next play to give
- 51:04Speaker 5: the next play the credit it deserves.
- 51:05Speaker 1: All right. Next, he was asked about that old thing
- 51:08Speaker 1: about camp. Is the offense ahead of the defense? Is
- 51:11Speaker 1: the defense ahead of the offense? He was asked about
- 51:13Speaker 1: the defense being ahead of the offense, which had been
- 51:15Speaker 1: widely reported. Are they significantly ahead? And what are the differences, say,
- 51:22Speaker 1: from the defense and the offense?
- 51:24Speaker 5: A lot of stuff in there. Hold on, let me
- 51:27Speaker 5: unpack it. Okay, so I think the defense really has
- 51:33Speaker 5: bought into Coach Muschamp's scheme and style and mentality. And
- 51:39Speaker 5: I think that that has bode well for us because
- 51:42Speaker 5: I think we have some real alphas on our defense.
- 51:44Speaker 5: When you think about Colin and Hero, And, you know,
- 51:50Speaker 5: this guy, Myron, I mean, not Myron Charles. He's had
- 51:52Speaker 5: a really good camp, too. But Murad Watson is playing
- 51:55Speaker 5: really well. Lance Jackson, Zena, the addition of Justin and
- 52:00Speaker 5: Raheem at backer. We obviously know what Johnny's been, but
- 52:04Speaker 5: Jelani's been. But I think Bo Masco, Grayson Littleton, I
- 52:07Speaker 5: think this scheme kind of fits him, the mentality which
- 52:10Speaker 5: we play. So I think they kind of hit the
- 52:12Speaker 5: ground with like this mentality of this is how we're
- 52:15Speaker 5: going to want to go play. Now, we haven't been
- 52:18Speaker 5: perfect on defense either, but I think their level of
- 52:20Speaker 5: consistency has been good as we've grown throughout campus. So
- 52:24Speaker 5: I'm excited for these guys. I don't know. We'll find
- 52:26Speaker 5: out if we're going to be better or not, right? Again,
- 52:28Speaker 5: we have to put it on tape. It's one thing
- 52:30Speaker 5: to talk about it. It's another to do it. I
- 52:32Speaker 5: would say from an offensive perspective, you know, naturally.
- 52:37Speaker 5: In camp, defenses are somewhat going to be a little
- 52:40Speaker 5: ahead of the offense from, you know, they've been seeing
- 52:43Speaker 5: the same plays. We've been practicing all summer, but I
- 52:46Speaker 5: credit the offense because they continue to find explosive plays.
- 52:49Speaker 5: And the explosive play component to our offense is really
- 52:53Speaker 5: important that we can generate those. The level of efficiency,
- 52:57Speaker 5: my goal is that it continues to improve when the
- 53:00Speaker 5: defense isn't going against the same plays over and over
- 53:03Speaker 5: and over and the windows maybe aren't quite as tight
- 53:05Speaker 5: and the run holes aren't quite as tight. But that's
- 53:09Speaker 5: what our practices should look like. It should be when
- 53:13Speaker 5: we go good on good, it should be really hard
- 53:16Speaker 5: for both sides. And that's when the best teams I've
- 53:20Speaker 5: been on, that's what it's felt like that, man, this
- 53:23Speaker 5: is like, Hey, today the offense got them. The next day, shoot,
- 53:26Speaker 5: the defense got them. And that's what the good teams do.
- 53:30Speaker 5: If one side is just dominating the other, that's never
- 53:33Speaker 5: a great sign for the future. Okay.
- 53:35Speaker 1: All right. Next, he was asked about Texas State's offensive scheme.
- 53:40Speaker 1: And again, it's talked about G.J. Kinney's tempo being accelerated
- 53:47Speaker 1: and the differences between his offense and the Texas offense.
- 53:51Speaker 5: I think they do a few things that are, I
- 53:55Speaker 5: wouldn't say totally unique, but are kind of unique to,
- 53:59Speaker 5: you know, we probably will face this scheme two to
- 54:02Speaker 5: three times this year, roughly. Two and a half, let's
- 54:05Speaker 5: go with three. So one is the splits by the
- 54:08Speaker 5: wide receivers. They take really big splits, and so they
- 54:11Speaker 5: create space. Two, they go really fast, and so you've
- 54:15Speaker 5: got to get lined up. And then three, they use
- 54:18Speaker 5: the quarterback's legs in the run game. And so when
- 54:21Speaker 5: they create this space by splitting you out, they create
- 54:24Speaker 5: voids in your secondary, but also they get light boxes,
- 54:28Speaker 5: and then they add plus one runs with the quarterback.
- 54:30Speaker 5: And so if you think about who else plays this style,
- 54:34Speaker 5: Tennessee is a very similar style on offense. LSU now
- 54:37Speaker 5: will be a very similar style on offense. And I
- 54:40Speaker 5: know we don't play them, but in our conference, South
- 54:43Speaker 5: Carolina will be a little bit more style of this
- 54:45Speaker 5: offense with LSU. you know coach bryles this is old
- 54:49Speaker 5: coach bryles offense right um and now it's kind of
- 54:53Speaker 5: spread itself throughout throughout college football so it's a very
- 54:55Speaker 5: good scheme it's tough to defend it's unique that way
- 54:58Speaker 5: that you're not facing it every week and so you
- 55:01Speaker 5: got to spend a little time to get ready for
- 55:03Speaker 5: it we're fortunate this is week one that we've had
- 55:05Speaker 5: a little extra time to get our guys ready.
- 55:07Speaker 1: For it okay we'll hear more from sart coming up
- 55:10Speaker 1: uh next hour up next we're going to hear from
- 55:12Speaker 1: brian schottenheimer the cowboys head coach when we continue on
- 55:15Speaker 1: 13 under the zone Always love talking heads, but is
- 55:32Speaker 1: this because of how hot it was over the weekend?
- 55:34Speaker 1: Is that why you're hitting that?
- 55:35Speaker 2: How hot it was, how hot it will be, and
- 55:37Speaker 2: the fact that you're a big talking heads fan.
- 55:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I am. You know, there was an awful lot
- 55:44Speaker 1: said about... The folks, how hot it was at the
- 55:51Speaker 1: USC game where it was 94 degrees and, you know, whatever,
- 55:57Speaker 1: all that kind of thing. And how hot it's going
- 56:01Speaker 1: to be this Saturday here and how hot it'll be
- 56:03Speaker 1: in lots of places. And then somebody, I think it
- 56:06Speaker 1: was Chris Vanini, brought up the point that we're only
- 56:09Speaker 1: going to see more of this next year when it
- 56:11Speaker 1: goes to no more week zero and everybody's open in
- 56:14Speaker 1: 14 weeks. And other people said, eh, it's not going
- 56:18Speaker 1: to be like that everywhere. We don't know. I guess
- 56:20Speaker 1: we'll find out. And folks will show up for games
- 56:24Speaker 1: in some places. In some places, they won't. It'll just
- 56:26Speaker 1: be like that.
- 56:27Speaker 2: Maybe there's more opportunities to play indoors.
- 56:30Speaker 1: Yeah. Like AT & T Stadium in Arlington, where the
- 56:34Speaker 1: Cowboys will open their season a week from Sunday, Sunday night,
- 56:37Speaker 1: against the New York Giants. Brian Schottenheimer today talked about
- 56:41Speaker 1: some of the roster moves. And we're going to get
- 56:43Speaker 1: to those. In a moment, we're going to let Shadi
- 56:46Speaker 1: talk about some of them first.
- 56:49Speaker 7: I'm just going to start with this really emotional last
- 56:53Speaker 7: 48 hours or so.
- 56:55Speaker 3: The human element is real.
- 56:57Speaker 1: The conversations are real.
- 56:59Speaker 7: You know, we're trying to, you know, build a roster
- 57:03Speaker 7: that can handle the strain of, you know, 17 regular
- 57:07Speaker 7: season games, the grind of the playoffs into the Super Bowl. And,
- 57:12Speaker 7: you know, The roster is always fluid, but I would
- 57:15Speaker 7: be remiss if I didn't talk about that we let
- 57:18Speaker 7: some really incredible young men and really good football players
- 57:22Speaker 7: out the door.
- 57:23Speaker 3: And I am indebted to them.
- 57:26Speaker 7: For how hard they've worked and how much they bought
- 57:28Speaker 7: into our culture and what we are building. And I
- 57:32Speaker 7: feel like we tried to leave them with a lot
- 57:36Speaker 7: of feedback and most certainly how much we respect them,
- 57:40Speaker 7: love them and want to see them do well, um,
- 57:43Speaker 7: as they start a different journey. So, um, really do
- 57:47Speaker 7: love those guys and, uh, tough couple of days.
- 57:50Speaker 1: Uh, yeah. When you have to make those kinds of deals, um,
- 57:56Speaker 1: you can, you know, you can, uh, when you have
- 58:00Speaker 1: to make the kind of cuts that you have to make,
- 58:03Speaker 1: That happens. They did several things of those. Among the
- 58:11Speaker 1: items that they did, and help me out on the
- 58:14Speaker 1: specifics on this deal, the Broderick Jones trade they made
- 58:18Speaker 1: and what role he might have on this.
- 58:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Broderick Jones is tackle from the Steelers. Right. And
- 58:25Speaker 2: the Cowboys sent third and sixth round picks in the
- 58:29Speaker 2: next draft for Jones and a fourth round pick.
- 58:32Speaker 1: Okay all right uh is that also in the next
- 58:35Speaker 1: draft the fourth round pick correct okay all right so
- 58:38Speaker 1: so he was asked about this broderick jones trade and
- 58:41Speaker 1: what potential role jones might have yeah.
- 58:43Speaker 7: Um so to be very clear uh broderick's a guy
- 58:46Speaker 7: a lot of talent um you know they've moved around
- 58:50Speaker 7: on the left and the right side um when we
- 58:52Speaker 7: made the trade uh the first thing i did was
- 58:55Speaker 7: um I reached out to Terrence Steele and told Terrence
- 58:58Speaker 7: that Broderick's coming here to compete with him to be
- 59:01Speaker 7: the starting right tackle. We're not gonna move Broderick around.
- 59:04Speaker 7: As you guys can imagine, Terrence Steele was the ultimate pro. Shadi,
- 59:08Speaker 7: I get it. I appreciate the phone call. You didn't
- 59:10Speaker 7: have to make the phone call. I said I did
- 59:12Speaker 7: because I respect you that much as a teammate and
- 59:14Speaker 7: a player. So Broderick will be competing with Terrence to
- 59:18Speaker 7: be the starting right tackle of this football team. And,
- 59:22Speaker 7: you know, Five-star athlete, Georgia, high draft.
- 59:26Speaker 1: Pick, elite feat.
- 59:28Speaker 7: There's some fundamental things that we're excited that we feel
- 59:32Speaker 7: like we can kind of tighten up. And I know
- 59:34Speaker 7: he's really excited to be here. And again, it goes
- 59:37Speaker 7: to that same thing. Sometimes a change of scenery is
- 59:39Speaker 7: a good thing.
- 59:40Speaker 5: Okay, all right.
- 59:41Speaker 1: He was also asked, now, we're going to give you
- 59:43Speaker 1: a timeline on this. First of all, this was in
- 59:46Speaker 1: the news conference before they actually finished up with their moves.
- 59:49Speaker 1: But he was asked if he planned to keep three quarterbacks.
- 59:52Speaker 7: I think, you know, at the same time, you know,
- 59:54Speaker 7: the competition's not over. You know, we need to, you know,
- 59:58Speaker 7: just continue to assess so many positions. But those guys
- 1:00:01Speaker 7: have made it really, really hard on us. And it's
- 1:00:04Speaker 7: been an awesome, you know, competition. And, you know, we're
- 1:00:10Speaker 7: still piecing the puzzle together. And that's where this thing
- 1:00:13Speaker 7: is very fluid.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: All right, so the latest piecing the puzzle together came
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: after that. The Cowboys have waived Joe Milton. And I
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: know that surprises a lot of people. In fact, when
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: we had Isaiah Stanback on last week, he thought Milton
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: had won the number two job. I think just about
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: everybody thought that Milton had won the number two job.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: But they're keeping Sam Howell. Milton, who arrived in Dallas
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: after the Cowboys traded a fifth-round pick for last year
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: to the Patriots for him in April, was competing with him.
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: He completed 29 of 43 passes for 378 yards. Three touchdowns,
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: no interceptions, had 12 carries, 14 yards, and rushing touchdown.
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: But he's been waived. The Cowboys also claimed Chiefs running
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: back Amari DiMarcato, the former TCU Horned Frog off waivers.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: Bill was the corresponding move in order for DiMarcato to
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: be added to the 53-man roster. That's why the roster
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: move came after the news conference. But they had announced
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: that DiMarcato was coming in, and they asked, Shadi, how
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: did he see the running back room shaking out with
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: DeMercado being added to the roster now?
- 1:01:29Speaker 7: Yeah, running backs are one of those positions, Scott, as
- 1:01:31Speaker 7: you know, that, you know, there's a lot of able-bodied
- 1:01:34Speaker 7: guys out there that, you.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: Know, are good players. They've played football and.
- 1:01:39Speaker 7: Again, I feel really good about Javante. I've raved about Malik.
- 1:01:43Speaker 7: Hunter Lepke's a guy that doesn't get talked enough about.
- 1:01:47Speaker 7: But we feel like we're going to build a really
- 1:01:49Speaker 7: good running back room from top to bottom, including the
- 1:01:52Speaker 7: practice squad as we finalize that. And one that is
- 1:01:55Speaker 7: very competitive and fits with our model of compete every day.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: Okay. All right. So there that is. And again, we'll
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: hear more from Brian Schottenheimer coming up next hour. We'll
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: be back to wrap up hour number two of the
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: program here. on a Longhorns Monday on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Third and final hour of the program here on Sports
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. Glad to have you
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: with us here on a Monday afternoon. Greg Way alongside
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: the producer, Jay Kerman. I'm kind of curious to get
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: your thoughts on the stuff Cameron Parker said last hour
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: when he said that He thought that the NFC East
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: was wide open, and he included your team, the Washington Commanders.
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: You sounded a little skeptical about that.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I was going to give this Commander
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: season a fair shake. I didn't want to fall into
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: the trap, the NFC East fan stereotype, at least among
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: those at this particular station, of being too down on
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: their team too early. But, Craig, I can't help but
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: sound a few alarm bells, learning about all of these
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: injuries that are plaguing the Commanders at camp. And it's
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: not just injuries. They're injuries in the positions that were
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: the biggest question marks, the biggest things that held them
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: back last season. And that is both lines. And I
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: learned just today that Trey Amos is hitting the IR
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: to start the season. He was a cornerback that I
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: was very excited about in year number two. Not only that,
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: he's a cornerback in an otherwise thin cornerback room. So
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: I've got five or six glaring questions about the commanders
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: that I didn't have when they were healthier about a
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: month ago. Okay.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: All right. I just, I wanted to make sure.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: I'm not, I'm not feeling good about the commanders. I
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: think it's actually kind of a two team race. I
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: don't think it's a four team race.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. It makes sense. Um, I wanted to call
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: folks attention to something. Um, and we've been talking a
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: lot about this, especially over the last few days as developments, uh,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: have accelerated. And I'm talking about the issue of the potential,
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: the possibility of collegiate athletes returning from the NFL, having
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: not secured a roster spot in the NFL, to a
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: college campus. And as we've said, the poster child example
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: of this is not only Daquan Wright, but really the
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: three players who played for Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: who upon not being able to make the final cut
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: on an NFL roster, now have entered the portal and
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: actually entered the portal before they were even finally cut
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: and are trying to earn a roster spot with LSU,
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: where Lane Kiffin is now. And there's been quite a
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: bit of debate about this. It started off with a
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: statement a week ago tonight from.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: The SEC presidents who said they were not in favor
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: of this. The next day, the big 10 came out
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: with policy that said that if you were a football player,
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: you could not return if you didn't make it in
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: the NFL. Then the SEC followed up and said football
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: and basketball. Then the big 12 threw a blanket over
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: all sports and said it as well. Well, Today, there was,
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: and I mentioned that the fact there's going to be
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: a hearing on Thursday that surrounds the injunction or the
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: temporary restraining order that some 30 student athletes, including the
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: three I mentioned, have filed and have been able to
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: secure in order to try to make it on back
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: into college, having not been able to make an NFL roster.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: So there's been this TRO, but we're going to find
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: out whether that they have the opportunity to return because
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: this legal battle was still going on. And today, and
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: this was after the SEC then came out the other
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: day and said coaches could be subject to suspension. being fined.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: The school could be fined half of its budget, its
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: football budget. There was all kinds of, let's just say
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: there's been a lot of threats made on both sides, okay? Today,
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: and this was reported first, I believe, by Ross Dellinger,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: who's a senior college football reporter for Yahoo. And this
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: headline says, SEC school leaders exploring extreme steps over LSU's
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: plan to sign former pro athletes, including potential expulsion, competition boycott,
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: and federal lawsuit. First of all, here's the Lane Kiffin
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: part of his side of the story about how guys
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: want to return. They couldn't make it in the NFL.
- 1:07:23Speaker 6: There's a lot of factors into it and different things.
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: And one that.
- 1:07:28Speaker 6: I struggled too was, okay, this late, even though that's
- 1:07:31Speaker 6: what you do in the NFL, and there's an argument,
- 1:07:34Speaker 6: these players are paid like that. And it's what happened
- 1:07:37Speaker 6: yesterday in the NFL. New players come in and take
- 1:07:39Speaker 6: people's spots and added to rosters. Other guys have been
- 1:07:42Speaker 6: there working. So I met with our leadership committee of
- 1:07:47Speaker 6: our players, and I asked them, it's your team. What
- 1:07:51Speaker 6: do you want to do? if these players are allowed
- 1:07:56Speaker 6: to be added to rosters, what do you want to do?
- 1:07:59Speaker 6: And every one of them was emphatic about they can
- 1:08:03Speaker 6: help us win, bring them. And, you know, we understand that,
- 1:08:08Speaker 6: you know, we have a team that's practiced together, worked
- 1:08:10Speaker 6: together all offseason, but one of them said, hey, this
- 1:08:14Speaker 6: is how it works at the next level, and this
- 1:08:16Speaker 6: is how the real world works. There aren't days you
- 1:08:19Speaker 6: can't bring employees into certain jobs to– help the company.
- 1:08:24Speaker 6: So that made me feel a little better in the
- 1:08:27Speaker 6: struggle and being torn back and forth.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: So we'll wait to hear for more guidance.
- 1:08:35Speaker 6: The SEC issued guidance in our question about that they'll
- 1:08:39Speaker 6: follow court orders. And so we'll wait to this week
- 1:08:43Speaker 6: to see if there's any more guidance and the question
- 1:08:45Speaker 6: of whether myself as the head coach of football and
- 1:08:49Speaker 6: will football follow SEC orders. I said it earlier this
- 1:08:52Speaker 6: morning when asked.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: Of course we will. Okay. All right. So that's what
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin had to say about it. Now, here's what
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: Ross Dellinger was reporting. High-ranking SEC university executives are exploring
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: legal and internal avenues intended to address the school's plan
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: to add former professional athletes to its rosters, including extreme
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: measures measures such as boycotting competition against the Tigers. Does
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: that sound familiar? If you're looking, following the Brendan Sorsby
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: thing with Texas tech.
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: Boycotting competition, sanctioning the school with probation or even expulsion
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: and or filing a federal legal challenge.
- 1:09:42Speaker 3: This is nuts.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: Multiple sources with knowledge and of the conversation spoke to
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: Yahoo Sports under condition of anonymity. An SEC spokesperson declined comment.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: An LSU spokesperson also declined comment. These conversations primarily among,
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: and this is from Ross Dellinger's report, the conversations primarily
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: among SEC school general counsels and university presidents are considered
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: to be in the early stages. The talks are described
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: as not league-driven, but membership-led. While these discussions are serious
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: in nature, it is unclear as to what avenues the
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: conference or its members will ultimately pursue. It's unlikely that
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: the league or its member schools make a formal decision
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: on a path forward before this Thursday hearing I mentioned
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: in Baton Rouge. where judges expected to hear arguments in
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: the Louisiana eligibility case that opened the door for these
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: professional athletes to return to college. One thing is clear.
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: Multiple SEC university officials believe that action is required to
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: maintain a fair and balanced competitive field within the conference.
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: And they're prepared to take serious steps against an LSU
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: program that they claim stands to violate the membership constitution
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: and bylaws. So over the last 36 to 48 hours,
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: increasing conversations among 15 school executives, you know, not including LSU,
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: signal a certain aggressive approach. One university executive is quoted
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: as saying, tensions are high. For some, the answer is
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: the conference's ultimate and unprecedented penalty, expulsion or a membership probation. Quote,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: It is fair to say that we're discussing multiple options,
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: including that, said one league stakeholder. Enough is enough. This
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: is ridiculous, end quote. These conversations are serious, added another
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: school official. Another high-ranking SEC school leader took it a
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: step further. There are plenty of other schools that would
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: take LSU's place. Wow, that's a crazy quote.
- 1:11:55Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: I'm sure that Florida State and Clemson are on the
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: phone with him right now. Yeah. Other options under consideration
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: include individual schools refusing to play a program that rosters
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: an ineligible player based on SEC rules. Describe one person
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: with knowledge of the talks. We can't make anyone play them. Listen,
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: I'm warning you, don't take this trip to Baton Rouge
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: away from me this time. It was six years ago
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: Texas was supposed to play Baton Rouge and COVID knocked
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: that game out. So I didn't get to call a
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: game at Death Valley. And I was really looking forward
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: to it this year. Now who knows what's going to happen. Anyway.
- 1:12:32Speaker 3: It's high on the list in those conversations in there. Yeah.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: So there's a lot of saber rattling going on right now,
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: mainly from the SEC. They're like, laugh now, but you
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: guys are on double secret probation. They're like being Dean
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: Warmer from Animal House with that. Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian,
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: from the news conference today, was asked about this whole thing.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: and his thoughts on how crazy this whole thing has
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: gotten and his thoughts overall on this concept of a
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: player not making it in the NFL, returning to the
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: collegiate ranks.
- 1:13:11Speaker 5: Yeah, well, here's my thing. You know, I think our
- 1:13:14Speaker 5: presidents got this right in the Southeastern Conference. The presidents,
- 1:13:19Speaker 5: the chancellors, the ADs, they met last week and they said,
- 1:13:22Speaker 5: they voted unanimously that if, you've been a professional, you
- 1:13:27Speaker 5: can't come back to college. It wasn't like a split vote.
- 1:13:32Speaker 5: It was a unanimous vote. And so all of the
- 1:13:36Speaker 5: other stuff, man, if I'm spending time over there, I'm
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: neglecting our team and that's not fair to our team.
- 1:13:42Speaker 5: And so if that's what the presidents, chancellors and ADs
- 1:13:46Speaker 5: believe is what's best for our conference and our sport,
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: that's what I believe in. And that's what we're going
- 1:13:51Speaker 5: to go with. And I just can't spend all day
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: long looking at Twitter or X to see what's the
- 1:13:57Speaker 5: next court ruling. I know other people do. I don't
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: know how they do it, right? I can only focus
- 1:14:03Speaker 5: on what we do to put our players in the
- 1:14:06Speaker 5: best interest to be successful. And I think that's the
- 1:14:11Speaker 5: right thing. I really do. The more I've spent more
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: time on it, and I know I had an answer
- 1:14:15Speaker 5: last week about this that I thought kind of covered it,
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: but I really believe that. I really believe that when
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: you've signed a professional conference, These players on all of
- 1:14:25Speaker 5: our rosters, not just ours, have been working for nine
- 1:14:28Speaker 5: months for this moment on Saturday, which then will lead
- 1:14:32Speaker 5: into the next five to six months. The fact that
- 1:14:35Speaker 5: somebody out there is going to take a player off
- 1:14:37Speaker 5: of an NFL roster and tell somebody who's been doing
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: it for nine months, go kick rocks, that doesn't sit
- 1:14:43Speaker 5: well with me. I think that's wrong. That morally is wrong.
- 1:14:46Speaker 5: So I think our presidents, ADs, and chancellors got it right,
- 1:14:50Speaker 5: and we'll support it, and we'll fall in line.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: Okay, so that's where the lines are being drawn right now,
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: and we'll see where it goes from here. We're going
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: to hear more from Sark coming up. We'll take a break.
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: We'll be right back with more right here on Sports
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: Radio AM, 13 under the zone on the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: Waiting in the front yard, sitting on a log. A
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: single shot rifle and a one-eyed dog. Yonder come a
- 1:15:16Speaker 3: kinfolk in the moonlight. Louisiana Saturday night.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: All right, I think you're getting a little bit extreme
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: here now. Louisiana Saturday night. We'll see how this goes
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: for Louisiana State University, what's going on with that. We
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: have a talkback question for us here, or a comment anyway.
- 1:15:40Speaker 3: I'll bring that up here in just one moment.
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: Craig, make sure you put out the word.
- 1:15:51Speaker 5: If nobody wants their Longhorn tickets for Saturday, my son
- 1:15:55Speaker 5: and I are more than willing to burn our butts
- 1:15:58Speaker 5: to go support the Longhorns.
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: That's Gary.
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: All right, Gary. I think you just put the word
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: out there. I should point out, too, Gary, that on Wednesday... No,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: it's Thursday, Thursday of this week. Thursday, we're going to
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: give away a pair of tickets to the game. Wednesday
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: morning on the morning kickoff with Mike Hardball-Harge and the
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: world's strongest man, Mark Henry, they will give away a
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: pair of tickets. So be tuned in for your opportunity
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: to win a pair of tickets to the season opener,
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: Texas and Texas State. They will give away tickets. Wednesday morning,
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: we'll give away a pair on Thursday, afternoon here on
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: the program. Okay. Let's go back to Aaron from Sark.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: And he was asked, about some position moves, like Colton Vosick.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: He was asked, is he being moved from the edge
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: rusher to the linebacker spot? Because he's kind of been
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: cross-trained at both.
- 1:17:00Speaker 5: In some of our packages, he'll play kind of a
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: hybrid that way. But he's going to play a ton
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: of edge for us, for sure.
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: Okay, and then Sark was asked about Vosick's skill set
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: that gives them that flexibility with him and the youngster,
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: the freshman, Rocky Cummings.
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: Well, I think one thing in our conference, like we're
- 1:17:22Speaker 5: talking about defending this style of offense this week in
- 1:17:25Speaker 5: Tennessee and LSU. But we're going to face offenses that
- 1:17:30Speaker 5: are going to break the huddle in the SEC that
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: are going to come out in 13 personnel. with one
- 1:17:34Speaker 5: back and three tight ends. So you've got to have
- 1:17:36Speaker 5: the ability to put big people on the field and
- 1:17:38Speaker 5: defend those types of people too. And so we're just
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: trying to create versatility amongst our defense so we're not
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: kind of just so one-dimensional that we can play the
- 1:17:48Speaker 5: multitude of offenses that we might play. I think Rocky
- 1:17:51Speaker 5: and Cozy, both those guys, and I'm going to talk
- 1:17:53Speaker 5: about Tyler here in a minute, I think both Rocky
- 1:17:55Speaker 5: and Cozy have grown into the position. Both those guys
- 1:17:59Speaker 5: were really edge players in high school. We put them
- 1:18:03Speaker 5: as off-the-ball linebackers when they got here, and I credit
- 1:18:06Speaker 5: both of them for their growth and development at the position,
- 1:18:09Speaker 5: and they're working with Coach Nansen and doing those things
- 1:18:12Speaker 5: that they're gaining the confidence. Tyler, that's what he grew
- 1:18:16Speaker 5: up doing his whole life. He knows how to play
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: off-the-ball linebacker and speed and space and tackling and all
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: the things that he does. I credit those two because
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: they move from here to back here, and that's a
- 1:18:26Speaker 5: big adjustment for guys in nine months' time, and they've
- 1:18:29Speaker 5: done a heck of a job with it.
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: Okay, so he's mentioned those two guys as well. Several
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: different guys have really come a long way, and it
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: made a difference. And like he said, that's why Colton
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: Vosick is one of those guys who can kind of
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: be cross-trained at that and does that. And then at
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: the linebacker spot, they're looking to make sure other guys
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: can step in. He mentioned Tyler. Atkinson. Notice that he's
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: talking about that a lot, about the linebacker spot, because
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: of the movement they had to make to dismiss Ty
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: Anthony Smith from the team. So that's why there's... more
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: of the emphasis than you might ordinarily hear about what
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: they're doing with that linebacker spot. Okay, so then he
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: was asked about a couple of other things as well,
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: like what tells him that Arch is equipped to start
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: this season better than he did in the opener in
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: his first designated start as the number one quarterback? last
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: year at Ohio State. He's been great.
- 1:19:34Speaker 5: I think that he's got a real sense of confidence
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: about him. I think his leadership, the players believing in
- 1:19:42Speaker 5: him is always a great sign. Like I said, I've
- 1:19:46Speaker 5: seen our explosive plays continually go up, and that's a
- 1:19:49Speaker 5: credit to him in a variety of ways. But he's Arch.
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: He hasn't changed, and that to me is a great sign.
- 1:19:57Speaker 5: It's like all of the noise that didn't affect him
- 1:20:00Speaker 5: in trying to be something that he's not. He's very
- 1:20:02Speaker 5: consistent with who he is. He's improved on who he is,
- 1:20:05Speaker 5: and that's a good sign for us.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: Okay. Next up, he was talking about the development of
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: the team overall, the progress that they made, the ups
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: and downs, mainly ups in training camp and where they
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: stand right now.
- 1:20:21Speaker 5: Well, it's pretty exciting. I referenced this right at the beginning.
- 1:20:25Speaker 5: We're on our fifth straight year now of season tickets
- 1:20:28Speaker 5: being sold out in DKR before we kicked off the
- 1:20:31Speaker 5: ball to start the season. That wasn't that way in
- 1:20:34Speaker 5: year one, right? And now the fact that people see
- 1:20:39Speaker 5: our style of play, because it's one thing to have
- 1:20:41Speaker 5: a personal opinion. It's what our fans believe in the
- 1:20:43Speaker 5: way we play the game and appreciate the way that
- 1:20:46Speaker 5: we're playing the game and the quality of players that
- 1:20:49Speaker 5: we have in our program. But like I talked about
- 1:20:52Speaker 5: the team last Friday, when we practice, we wear our
- 1:20:56Speaker 5: orange jerseys or white jerseys and so on and so forth.
- 1:20:58Speaker 5: But come Saturday, we're going to come out of that tunnel,
- 1:21:01Speaker 5: and it's going to say Texas on our chest. And
- 1:21:04Speaker 5: we represent a lot when we come out of that
- 1:21:06Speaker 5: tunnel with Texas on our chest. We represent not only
- 1:21:10Speaker 5: the great state of Texas, this great university, the ex-players,
- 1:21:13Speaker 5: the ex-coaches. the high school coaches. There's so much that
- 1:21:17Speaker 5: embodies that, that we take a lot of pride in that,
- 1:21:20Speaker 5: in the way we play the game and the way
- 1:21:22Speaker 5: we carry ourselves in game, that it is exciting. And
- 1:21:25Speaker 5: I'm excited that we've gotten to this point that we've
- 1:21:28Speaker 5: been able to, year after year, put a quality team
- 1:21:31Speaker 5: together that plays the game of football the right way.
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: All right, back to a question about Arch Manning and
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: saying how his conversations with Arch on the game week
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: for the first game of the year are different this
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: year than they were the game week of the first
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: game of the season last year.
- 1:21:50Speaker 5: You know, not so much different. You know, I get
- 1:21:53Speaker 5: into game plan mode with him now. And so a
- 1:21:56Speaker 5: lot of the stuff in practice is on little things.
- 1:21:59Speaker 5: You know, the timing on a motion, the adjustment on
- 1:22:02Speaker 5: a route, maybe grabbing Ryan or Cam and saying, hey,
- 1:22:06Speaker 5: on this play now, if the safety does this, that's
- 1:22:09Speaker 5: how we do it. We good on the same page.
- 1:22:11Speaker 5: Let's make sure we get it after practice. And then
- 1:22:12Speaker 5: they go work on it after practice. So it's a
- 1:22:14Speaker 5: lot of that building up. Now on Friday, I sit
- 1:22:18Speaker 5: with them and we talk game plan. We talk play calls.
- 1:22:20Speaker 5: We talk situational football. Here's what I'm thinking. Do you
- 1:22:23Speaker 5: like it? Do you not like it? I don't want
- 1:22:25Speaker 5: to call anything that he doesn't feel great about. And
- 1:22:28Speaker 5: I try not to do that to him. And the
- 1:22:30Speaker 5: key to me in year, now year two as a
- 1:22:33Speaker 5: starter with Arch, is him having the ability to tell
- 1:22:36Speaker 5: me he doesn't like one of the plays. Because you're
- 1:22:38Speaker 5: not offending me, but I think sometimes a younger quarterback
- 1:22:42Speaker 5: and be like, I don't want to tell him I
- 1:22:43Speaker 5: don't like that play because he likes it. I don't
- 1:22:45Speaker 5: have to execute the play. I just call it. I
- 1:22:48Speaker 5: want to make sure we're calling the plays for him
- 1:22:50Speaker 5: that he believes in, that he has great faith in.
- 1:22:52Speaker 5: And so that's what Friday's meeting is really for, that
- 1:22:56Speaker 5: just because it's on the call sheet doesn't mean I
- 1:22:58Speaker 5: have to call it. I want to call the things
- 1:22:59Speaker 5: that he really likes and the things that he feels
- 1:23:02Speaker 5: comfortable with.
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: All right, and that brings us to one of his
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: receiving targets, the most celebrated, at least going into the season,
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: Cam Coleman. And Sark was asked about his progress and
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: how quick did he get into the playbook and be
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: able to pick up on everything that Sark wants to
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: do with his offense as it relates to the passing
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: game and to Coleman in specific.
- 1:23:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I would say Cam has been phenomenal. And part
- 1:23:27Speaker 5: of it is, you know, Cam is very intentional. He
- 1:23:31Speaker 5: came here for a reason. He's he was a great
- 1:23:34Speaker 5: receiver at Auburn, right? And he came to a very
- 1:23:38Speaker 5: different system. And I think I credit him because it
- 1:23:41Speaker 5: was very strategic. He wanted an NFL system. He wanted
- 1:23:44Speaker 5: to learn how things are taught in the NFL. And
- 1:23:48Speaker 5: he wanted a full route tree and he wanted formations.
- 1:23:51Speaker 5: He wanted motions. He wanted to read coverages and run
- 1:23:54Speaker 5: routes based off of coverages. And So he's been very
- 1:23:57Speaker 5: intentional in his approach. There's been some growing pains compared
- 1:24:00Speaker 5: to what he had come from and nothing to take
- 1:24:03Speaker 5: away from what they did. There's been some growing pains.
- 1:24:05Speaker 5: But to his credit, I've never felt him be down
- 1:24:09Speaker 5: about it. Like he wants it more. He wants to
- 1:24:11Speaker 5: meet extra. He wants to learn how to do it.
- 1:24:14Speaker 5: The byproduct is he's playing really well. He's playing fast.
- 1:24:17Speaker 5: And now the combination of all three of those guys
- 1:24:20Speaker 5: being out there together is fun for us as a
- 1:24:22Speaker 5: coaching staff because we you don't feel hamstrung like, well,
- 1:24:26Speaker 5: he might not know what to do. You know, he,
- 1:24:28Speaker 5: he definitely knows what he's doing. He's confident in doing it.
- 1:24:31Speaker 5: And I think, like you said earlier, Arch has got
- 1:24:33Speaker 5: good rapport and good faith in him to, to do
- 1:24:35Speaker 5: what he's supposed to do. Okay.
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: Uh, then again, going back to, uh, Arch and talking
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: about how much in sync the two of them are
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: when it comes to those kinds of things.
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:24:46Speaker 5: Like I think last year offensively was a little bit
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: of a work in progress. Um, you know, we were
- 1:24:56Speaker 5: probably a little too young around Arch as much as
- 1:25:00Speaker 5: it was Arch's first year starting. And so trying to
- 1:25:03Speaker 5: figure out what he felt very good with, but also
- 1:25:06Speaker 5: what the other guys could do well, it wasn't great
- 1:25:10Speaker 5: that we didn't really have a run game around him
- 1:25:12Speaker 5: to where He became the run game, but that was
- 1:25:16Speaker 5: what we needed to do to try to be successful.
- 1:25:20Speaker 5: The goal is that we have more balance this year.
- 1:25:23Speaker 5: The goal is that we can put ourselves In more
- 1:25:25Speaker 5: manageable situations, most notably third down, right? I mean, staying
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: out of third and seven plus third and 10 plus situations.
- 1:25:33Speaker 5: That's not fun for any quarterback and that's not fun
- 1:25:35Speaker 5: for an offensive line, things of that nature. So how
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: do you stay ahead of the chains? You run the
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: ball better, less self-inflicted wounds. You get completions when completions
- 1:25:43Speaker 5: are available to you. And so I think all those things,
- 1:25:46Speaker 5: we've seen the growth offensively. And part of that is
- 1:25:49Speaker 5: the growth in him, you know, personally as, as a quarterback.
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: Now shifting back over to the defense, would it be
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: safe to say that stylistically will, will must champs defense
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: be a quote unquote in your face defense?
- 1:26:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:26:04Speaker 5: No, I think that's a, that's a great point because
- 1:26:06Speaker 5: we all, you know, when you make a hire and
- 1:26:10Speaker 5: you make changes, you know, there's, There's a little bit
- 1:26:13Speaker 5: of leap of faith involved, right? But you have a
- 1:26:18Speaker 5: vision of what you're hoping it can look like. And,
- 1:26:21Speaker 5: you know, I was hopeful I would get kind of
- 1:26:24Speaker 5: the leadership out of Coach Muschamp, and we've gotten it.
- 1:26:26Speaker 5: I mean, this guy has got great rapport with the players,
- 1:26:28Speaker 5: and not just on defense, on offense too. The style
- 1:26:32Speaker 5: of play is aggressive. The play calling is aggressive, but
- 1:26:35Speaker 5: it's not reckless. Like, it's very– tactical. But yet I
- 1:26:41Speaker 5: think there's a belief in the speed and physicality of
- 1:26:45Speaker 5: which we want to play the game. And you see
- 1:26:47Speaker 5: it at all three levels, the D-line, the linebackers, and
- 1:26:51Speaker 5: the DBs. I'm not naive. We're probably going to have
- 1:26:55Speaker 5: some growing pains. I'd love to say, hey, we're going
- 1:26:57Speaker 5: to go you know, just play fantastic Saturday. There'll be
- 1:27:01Speaker 5: some growing pains, but that's okay too. Like that's part
- 1:27:04Speaker 5: of this process to, as we grow through this and
- 1:27:07Speaker 5: we're going up against, like I said, a very good offense,
- 1:27:09Speaker 5: a veteran offense with a play caller and a quarterback
- 1:27:12Speaker 5: who are in sync. And so there'll be some moments,
- 1:27:15Speaker 5: but I don't, I don't question in how we're going
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: to play the game, but we're going to have to
- 1:27:20Speaker 5: get through some of the growing pains. I think in this,
- 1:27:22Speaker 5: in this first ball game.
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: All right. Next he was, asked about his specialists because
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: they haven't heard him talk much about the kicking game
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: the place kicker the punter they're brand new but he
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: said they've got the.
- 1:27:33Speaker 5: Jobs yeah so yeah the specialist stuff is is pretty
- 1:27:37Speaker 5: good so we'll have mac and geo will punt and
- 1:27:39Speaker 5: kick um you know obviously trey trey will snap for
- 1:27:43Speaker 5: us and then ryan will be our primary returner but
- 1:27:47Speaker 5: we got a lot of good returners, first of all,
- 1:27:49Speaker 5: that we feel comfortable if they went in. And I
- 1:27:52Speaker 5: give a lot of credit. Mikey and Jake have really
- 1:27:54Speaker 5: come on. So to think that those are our two backups,
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: and this is the era of 105 scholarships and where
- 1:28:00Speaker 5: the benefit is, right? In the past, you're kind of
- 1:28:04Speaker 5: rolling the dice on a walk-on as a backup. We've
- 1:28:06Speaker 5: got two scholarship young punter and kicker for us that
- 1:28:09Speaker 5: we feel very good about right there. Okay.
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: By the way, the Mac is Mac Shemento. He's the punter.
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: The kicker is Gianni Spedic, but you heard him calling
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: him Geo. Gianni Spedic will be the place kicker for that.
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: A couple other things. Is this one of his faster
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: teams like he was hoping it would be?
- 1:28:32Speaker 5: I do think we're a fast team. I think we
- 1:28:34Speaker 5: play fast, too. That's the exciting part. It's one thing
- 1:28:37Speaker 5: to be fast just running down a track. It's another,
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: are you fast on the grass, right? When you get
- 1:28:43Speaker 5: the play call, you have a recognition of what we're
- 1:28:46Speaker 5: trying to do, what the opponent's doing, and then go
- 1:28:48Speaker 5: cut it loose. And this team does that. Now we
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: need to do it Saturday when it's going to be
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: 105 outside and the turf will probably be about 150 degrees.
- 1:28:57Speaker 5: You know, so we're going to have to play fast
- 1:28:59Speaker 5: in the elements as well. And that's the key.
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it's going to be very, very fast. One more
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: from Sark. Talking about the excitement level that's there. The
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: game week has indeed finally arrived.
- 1:29:10Speaker 5: Yeah, that's... I was like, you know, this is... You know,
- 1:29:14Speaker 5: certain nights keep you up because you're worried about stuff.
- 1:29:17Speaker 5: We've all been there, right? Certain nights keep you up
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: because it feels like Christmas the next day, right? And
- 1:29:22Speaker 5: we gave, we always do this every year. Training camp
- 1:29:25Speaker 5: is training camp. And then I give everybody Sunday off,
- 1:29:28Speaker 5: you know, yesterday off. Because I think it's a time
- 1:29:31Speaker 5: for everybody to be with their families, relax, knowing I'm
- 1:29:35Speaker 5: probably not going to get another day off for about
- 1:29:37Speaker 5: six months. OK, and then so when you're not around
- 1:29:40Speaker 5: the people that you've been around every single day, it's
- 1:29:43Speaker 5: like the excitement to get back with them this morning.
- 1:29:45Speaker 5: And I feel it. You know, I feel it amongst
- 1:29:48Speaker 5: the staff. I feel amongst the players. They've put in
- 1:29:51Speaker 5: a lot of work, like a lot of people. A
- 1:29:54Speaker 5: lot of people work hard. But I just think that
- 1:29:57Speaker 5: this team, like I said, the connectivity is unique. And
- 1:29:59Speaker 5: I've been saying that. Hopefully it shines through. That's the goal,
- 1:30:03Speaker 5: that it shines through on Saturday, that the growth that
- 1:30:05Speaker 5: this team has done together, the staff, the players, everybody involved,
- 1:30:10Speaker 5: you can feel it in the way that we play
- 1:30:12Speaker 5: the game. And that's the goal come Saturday.
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: And, of course, our coverage is going to begin 10.30
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: Saturday morning with the third and Longhorn podcast pregame. 11.30,
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: you'll have Longhorns game day coverage from the Winship area
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: over there on Bevo Boulevard. That'll be 11.30, and then
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: at 1.30, the network pregame and the kickoff at 2.30.
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: Texas and Texas State, we're five days away from it.
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: It's finally about to get here. Up next, the NFL's
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: getting a little closer, not quite that close, but getting closer.
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: We'll hear from D'Amico Ryans, the Texans head coach, when
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: we continue on 13 Under the Zone.
- 1:30:50Speaker 7: All night long, all night long You shoot him down because.
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: You're waiting for.
- 1:30:57Speaker 7: Somebody good to come on All night long, all night
- 1:31:03Speaker 7: long But you'll be sleeping with the television on How.
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: Have we all done that? Fall asleep with the television
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: on Of course back in the earlier days Like Billy
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: Joel was just pointing out there Off the Glass House's
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: album Sleeping with the television on If you're old enough,
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: you are not old enough to remember this, Jake. But
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: I am old enough to remember when televisions signed off
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: at 2 o'clock in the morning with the national anthem,
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: and then you had the test pattern and the buzz.
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: That's exactly what that was, Justin. I don't know if
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: you were familiar with that.
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: I've only heard that test sound in our emergency training
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: here at iHeart.
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: Right. But that's what they used to do when they
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: would sign off. Imagine when I came out. To Texas.
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: I was 18. And I got out of here around
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: Christmas time. And then right after, I discovered this wonderful,
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: unbelievable thing. Television being on for 24 hours a day.
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: Where I grew up, it wasn't backwoods or backwater area
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: where I grew up in Greensboro. We had a metropolitan
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: area back then of about half a million. It's about,
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: I think, over a million now in the Piedmont Triad area, Greensboro,
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: High Point, Winston-Salem. but the local television, they signed off
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: at two o'clock in the morning, the late, late movie,
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: you know, stay up, if your dad lets you stay
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: up and watch, we had shock theater on Saturday night,
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: you know, and watch that on the local ABC affiliate
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: or whatever, but the television would, you know, like I said,
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: they signed off at two o'clock in the morning, so
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: I got out of here and saw TV stations on
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: all night, it was unbelievable, and then, of course, cable
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: takes over, and it really goes on from there.
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: Well, now you get people that there's settings now where
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: you can leave, you know, streaming on all night long.
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: You can even set it to fall asleep. Sometimes I'll
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: fall asleep to something, but I'll set it. You can
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: time it out so it doesn't run all night and
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: drain my computer battery.
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: Linda does that as well. She's done that with that.
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: A couple of college football notes here, and then we're
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: going to hear from D'Amico Ryan. What you quite often
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: see is in the first game of the year or
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: maybe the first couple of games of the year, teams,
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: especially if they are from Power Four conferences, playing schools
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: not far away. No better example than the one this Saturday.
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: Texas State, I think, officially is 28 miles from the
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: UT campus, something like that.
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: Doesn't that feel closer now with everything that's popped up
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: in between Austin and San Marcos?
- 1:33:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it's all kind of grown into one area,
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: you know, when you think about it. Tennessee's playing Furman.
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: They're in Greenville, South Carolina. It's about an hour and
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: a half away. It's not very far away that they're
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: going to play them. Let's see. Florida's playing Florida Atlantic,
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: so they don't have that far to travel. Vanderbilt's playing
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: Austin Peay. They just go straight down I-24 from Clarksville
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: to Nashville. So there's Mississippi State playing UL Monroe. That's
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: not far away. So anyway, the point is, another one
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: of those is Virginia Tech. They're playing VMI, Virginia Military Institute,
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: which is in Lexington, Virginia. It's about 80 miles away.
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: I've been to that stadium.
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: Have you? Because I've called other sports at VMI. Well,
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: they're playing Virginia Tech on Saturday in Blacksburg. It's about
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: an 80-mile bus ride. They can do that pretty inexpensively
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: and get a good paycheck going. And James Franklin, the
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: head coach at Virginia Tech, officially named Ethan. This is
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: going to be one of your better quarterback names of
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: the year. Ethan Grunkmeier. I think Grunkmeier. I think he
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: sounds like that. That's right. Yeah, the middle league. Grunkmeier.
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: He's going to be the starter. He followed Franklin from
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: Penn State to Virginia Tech. So Grunkmeier.
- 1:35:01Speaker 3: That was the Aller fill-in after the injury.
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: And Drew Aller made the Pittsburgh Steelers roster.
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: Yeah, he's looked good in the preseason.
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: Yeah, he has. So he's on that. Speaking of pro football,
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: in hearing from D'Amico Ryans, the head coach of the
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: Houston Texans, and, of course, they finished up their preseason
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: last Thursday, and then he had an availability on Saturday,
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: and he talked about his impressions from some roster hopefuls
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: like safety George Odom.
- 1:35:31Speaker 4: What I'm extremely proud of is the effort. A lot
- 1:35:33Speaker 4: of guys are flying around, making plays. George was one guy,
- 1:35:36Speaker 4: and he– had elite energy the entire game. He was
- 1:35:40Speaker 4: talking the entire game, and he made the play on
- 1:35:42Speaker 4: the interception, made some good tackles. So a lot of
- 1:35:45Speaker 4: guys can help themselves from the work that they put
- 1:35:48Speaker 4: out there tonight.
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: Sad to say, Odom didn't make it, right? He was
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: in that last roster cut down, wasn't he? Yeah, he was.
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: So D'Amico was asked, have the roster decisions gotten tougher
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: as his team has improved?
- 1:36:01Speaker 4: Every year it's tough to make the team, as it
- 1:36:03Speaker 4: should be, right, RM? Our younger guys are getting better.
- 1:36:07Speaker 4: They're improving. It's a hard team to make, and that's
- 1:36:10Speaker 4: how you want it to be. So we have some
- 1:36:13Speaker 4: tough decisions to make, myself and Nick, but we'll go
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: through that process and make the best decisions that we
- 1:36:19Speaker 4: can make for the Houston Texans.
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: Okay. So they have indeed made some other cuts. So
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: here's what they did. First of all, two players with
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: injury waivers, Solomon Bird and Keontae Hamilton.
- 1:36:34Speaker 5: Yep.
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: Okay. Then these players have all been released. Cornerback Bryce Hall.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: Linebacker Caleb Johnson. Naquan Jones, defensive tackle. Zay Jones. Yeah.
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: From Austin, Iowa. They brought him in. I mean, they
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: brought him in late last week. It was going to
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: be tougher.
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: And we won't have it in this show. D'Amico talked
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: about it. It was tough because they came in so late.
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: D'Amico and another guy you're going to name in a second,
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: Sterling Shepard.
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely. Brevin Jordan, the tight end, the aforementioned George Odom,
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: Dominique Robinson, defensive end, Brett Rippon, the quarterback, Sterling Shepard, yep,
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: and Justin Watson. And then they traded Jarrett Patterson to
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: the 49ers. Former commander. Yeah, and they agreed to terms
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: to acquire the following player via trade with the Cowboys,
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: Nathan Thomas. Oh. The tackle. When did that happen? It
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: happened yesterday. Put it this way. This was in yesterday's release.
- 1:37:32Speaker 3: Yeah, okay.
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: I missed that trade.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: The August 30th release.
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: Now we know the Cowboys have brought in another tackle today,
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: Broderick Jones.
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: Exactly. So that's where that went. And then he was
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: also asked about the wide receiver room management, given the
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: injury to Tank Dell, trying to come back, and the
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: trade for Boutte.
- 1:37:53Speaker 4: We've added to the receiver role, man. we needed to
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: add to the room with the loss of Higgins. We're
- 1:37:58Speaker 4: still trying to find who will be those guys for us.
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: At the receiver.
- 1:38:02Speaker 4: It won't be an easy decision at the receiver spot
- 1:38:04Speaker 4: because we have probably.
- 1:38:05Speaker 1: More guys deserving that we have spots for. Okay, and
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: then finally, his overall view of how training camp went?
- 1:38:12Speaker 4: This was a successful training camp for us. Our guys
- 1:38:15Speaker 4: got better. We grew as a team throughout training camp,
- 1:38:19Speaker 4: and that's my main focus always.
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: How are we growing?
- 1:38:22Speaker 5: How are we gelling?
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: How are we coming together as a team?
- 1:38:25Speaker 4: And these past few days here in Carolina was important as.
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: Well, man.
- 1:38:29Speaker 4: We had a lot of time, a lot of downtime
- 1:38:31Speaker 4: to spend as a team, to get to know each
- 1:38:33Speaker 4: other a little bit better, build that bond. Again, you
- 1:38:36Speaker 4: have to do it every year because you have new
- 1:38:38Speaker 4: faces every year, new coaches, new players. And so I
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: love where our team is headed as we step into
- 1:38:43Speaker 4: the regular season.
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: Boy, Aaron, they stepping into it too, playing Buffalo in
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: the opener. and that'll be a week from this Sunday.
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: It'll be at noon.
- 1:38:53Speaker 3: New stadium?
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: Yeah. First game? Yeah. No, this one's a home game. Oh, okay.
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: It's a home game.
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: They get the Cowboys at home this year, too.
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: Yes, they do. They certainly do. We'll be back to
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: wrap up today's edition of the program on 13 Under
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: the Zone.
