- 0:23Speaker 1: Get I'm as from Frankenbach and we've got a new
- 0:28Speaker 1: single coming out today called Demon Tantrum.
- 0:33Speaker 2: That's you having thanks for joining us this evening.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Hey worries mate, thanks for having me.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Oh pleasure.
- 0:39Speaker 4: So franken Bok do return today with an awesome new
- 0:42Speaker 4: single called Demon Tantrum, which will publishedly confirm one of
- 0:46Speaker 4: the worst kept secrets is in Naked Gun Movies, Mate,
- 0:49Speaker 4: which is a return to the band of original vocalist
- 0:51Speaker 4: Adam Glynn or Hatchie as he's known. So we'll get
- 0:55Speaker 4: Hatchie out of the way first because Duran has a
- 0:57Speaker 4: lot to do with most of what we're going to
- 0:59Speaker 4: chat about.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Brain, So long time Franko Bok fans will know.
- 1:03Speaker 4: But for the other ten people in the world actually
- 1:05Speaker 4: actually started Franki Bok with you back in nineteen ninety
- 1:08Speaker 4: seven at a time in world where music was a
- 1:12Speaker 4: shit done different to what it is today.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Yeah, it sure was very very different times. Yeah it was.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Well, I don't know, I wasn't really aware of what
- 1:24Speaker 1: was going on with the music industry so to speak.
- 1:28Speaker 3: I was I was aware of what was going on
- 1:30Speaker 3: in my bungalow that I was Livillain.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And I was busy programming drum drums and just making
- 1:40Speaker 1: up tunes and just attacking music the way that we
- 1:45Speaker 1: wanted to. And we sort of sort of similar to
- 1:49Speaker 1: what we're doing now. We're kind of oblivious to what
- 1:52Speaker 1: was happening and what was hip, and that we were
- 1:54Speaker 1: just very focused on doing our own thing.
- 1:58Speaker 3: I guess the one thing.
- 1:59Speaker 1: That we sort of that was important was too, yeah,
- 2:05Speaker 1: focus on not so much getting in line with what
- 2:10Speaker 1: was happening and all that. Definitely shaking things up a
- 2:14Speaker 1: bit as far as our first record come out with
- 2:17Speaker 1: you know, it was very colorful and all that sort
- 2:19Speaker 1: of stuff, and we had some cheesy stuff on. Their
- 2:22Speaker 1: metal had become and has become even more so, very
- 2:27Speaker 1: strict as far as what it needs to be, what
- 2:29Speaker 1: it has to be, what the done thing is, and
- 2:32Speaker 1: coming from it to a punk rock background. I guess
- 2:34Speaker 1: I wanted to shake that up a bit and do
- 2:37Speaker 1: things that not so you know, acceptable or the done thing.
- 2:43Speaker 3: So which is which is funny.
- 2:46Speaker 1: It's all these years later, it's raining true to exactly
- 2:48Speaker 1: how we feel and what we're doing today.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Fast Your early material, including the debut album Greetings and
- 2:55Speaker 4: saitations was far from just metal. There's a lot of
- 2:58Speaker 4: samples and timing changes. I sort of that was the
- 3:01Speaker 4: main focus. But did you have a particular sound you
- 3:04Speaker 4: were looking for back then or was it just all
- 3:05Speaker 4: funning games and throwing shit together.
- 3:09Speaker 1: We were It was it was five different people coming
- 3:12Speaker 1: from five different places with a collective idea, which is,
- 3:18Speaker 1: you know, down to the way we looked and the
- 3:21Speaker 1: way we sounded. You know, there's a lot of different
- 3:23Speaker 1: influencers at the time, and again pretty much what the
- 3:28Speaker 1: mantra is these days is like nobody should be shot
- 3:32Speaker 1: down and entertain everybody's idea and influence. And so, you know,
- 3:37Speaker 1: there was a bit of fact. They were more coming
- 3:39Speaker 1: in from the left, a bit of Dead Kennedy's from
- 3:41Speaker 1: the right, Metallica coming in from behind, you know, and
- 3:44Speaker 1: Sugar this and that, and Frank Zappa the sex Pistol
- 3:48Speaker 1: to Kate Bush to Bloody you name it, mate, And
- 3:52Speaker 1: it was like we just went, let's incorporate everybody style
- 3:57Speaker 1: into what we're doing, which sort of you know, mashed
- 4:00Speaker 1: together to make the sound that we made.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Now, the term taco metal was point around that time too,
- 4:06Speaker 4: and that name punches so many images, bro so many images.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Well, yeah, it wasn't.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I don't remember who exactly said it, but somebody did
- 4:16Speaker 1: say it to us. Might have been an interview similar
- 4:18Speaker 1: to this, but someone said that exactly, that like, you
- 4:22Speaker 1: guys like taco metal. I'm like, well, that's going to
- 4:25Speaker 1: be a good thing. I love Mexican I'm a Mexican,
- 4:28Speaker 1: not a Mexican. And I was like, well, what do
- 4:31Speaker 1: you mean by taco metal? And he said, you know,
- 4:34Speaker 1: I man, it's like there's a whole lot of meat
- 4:36Speaker 1: in there. It's like a whole lot of meat. It's
- 4:38Speaker 1: just the right amount of cheese. You know, that's kind
- 4:40Speaker 1: of what your music's like. And that sort of made
- 4:42Speaker 1: a whole lot of sense, because you know, there's a
- 4:45Speaker 1: lot of let's say, brutal sort of stuff, a lot
- 4:49Speaker 1: of almost death metal stuff back in the day punk
- 4:53Speaker 1: rocken but then there was the silly, cheesy, he almost
- 4:58Speaker 1: eighties kind of you know, slap and tickle, possibly maybe
- 5:01Speaker 1: even comedy in there, having a having a bit of
- 5:03Speaker 1: a joke in a style of music were you're not
- 5:06Speaker 1: really supposed to be funny.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Well funny, you should mention that made because my next
- 5:12Speaker 4: question is about that like breaking back, we'll put on
- 5:15Speaker 4: the public radar after a wicked version of Don't Call
- 5:17Speaker 4: Me Baby? Was that Was it a planned to crossover
- 5:21Speaker 4: tactic or were you just having a bit of fun.
- 5:25Speaker 3: As far as the Don't Call Me Baby or just.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Like did it make that to sort of try and
- 5:28Speaker 2: appel to a bit different market.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Or no, that was just a quinky dink, just a coincidence.
- 5:34Speaker 1: We were in the studio at the same time they were.
- 5:38Speaker 5: We heard Don't Know, Don't Don't a million times a day,
- 5:43Speaker 5: and you know, they were recording Don't Call Me Baby,
- 5:46Speaker 5: and we were recording please Call Me.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Sweety, and there was I think I think it was
- 5:53Speaker 1: me that mentioned it. I said, hey, we ought to
- 5:55Speaker 1: do a cover of this song just as a joke.
- 5:57Speaker 3: And a d W.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Norton Super High So at the time, was recording our stuff,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and he turned around and he said, you.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Should, you should.
- 6:05Speaker 1: If you do that, I reckon, I could get yours
- 6:06Speaker 1: on like Triple J during the daytime. And we were like, yeah,
- 6:11Speaker 1: well whatever, I mean final it's we were kind of
- 6:14Speaker 1: ahead in schedule back in those days. We had tape left,
- 6:19Speaker 1: so we looked like we're the kind of bands like,
- 6:20Speaker 1: let's use everything. So with a bit of tape that
- 6:24Speaker 1: we had left and a little bit of time we
- 6:25Speaker 1: had left, we went, let's go quickly worked that out,
- 6:27Speaker 1: which we didn't work it out properly, so we actually
- 6:30Speaker 1: like to play the song correctly, but close enough is
- 6:34Speaker 1: good enough for the old freck and buck. We had
- 6:38Speaker 1: a chat with Andy Vance and who's the mastermind behind
- 6:44Speaker 1: Madison Avenue, and said, hey, we'd like to do this
- 6:46Speaker 1: and he said, are you not going to take the
- 6:48Speaker 1: piss out of us, are you or anything like that?
- 6:50Speaker 1: And he said, no, man, like we liked the song. Actually,
- 6:53Speaker 1: we have no choice to like the song. We've hat
- 6:54Speaker 1: it that many times. And he said, your people talk
- 6:57Speaker 1: to our people, and yeah, he goes, go ahead, as
- 7:00Speaker 1: long as you don't back us out.
- 7:01Speaker 3: What he didn't know is we don't have any people.
- 7:03Speaker 3: So we just went we'll just.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Do it anyway, and we did it, and I think
- 7:10Speaker 1: it worked.
- 7:12Speaker 3: I still enjoy it to this day.
- 7:13Speaker 1: I walked out of my house this morning in the
- 7:15Speaker 1: backyard the radio is always on and don't call me baby,
- 7:17Speaker 1: it was, and I was like.
- 7:18Speaker 4: Yeah, your version of their version, their version, the correct
- 7:23Speaker 4: version ship one, but like a million interviews have done.
- 7:27Speaker 1: When the people say, like you, I say you hate it,
- 7:29Speaker 1: you're taking the pictures.
- 7:30Speaker 3: I don't hate the song at all. Actually enjoy it,
- 7:32Speaker 3: you know, I think it's.
- 7:33Speaker 1: It's cool, it's catchy, it's it was a very well
- 7:36Speaker 1: executed mission.
- 7:37Speaker 3: It did exactly what it was designed to do. So
- 7:40Speaker 3: you know, it's you know there, believe it or not.
- 7:44Speaker 1: There's not a whole lot of thinking that goes into
- 7:46Speaker 1: frank and bockets to favor something and go, you know,
- 7:50Speaker 1: that's cool, let's use this.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Ironically, the success of that song also became me Achilles heel.
- 7:59Speaker 4: The view of Franko Box sort of started to become
- 8:02Speaker 4: more of a parody band, which which led to a
- 8:04Speaker 4: few fractures within the band.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 8:10Speaker 1: I remember with the record company situation back in the
- 8:13Speaker 1: day was broad Runner. They very much wanted to push
- 8:18Speaker 1: that Don't Call Me Baby thing, you know, being the
- 8:20Speaker 1: novelty song that it was, which is pretty easy to
- 8:22Speaker 1: sort of get a song on the radio of an
- 8:25Speaker 1: already known song, and if it's a novelty, which from
- 8:28Speaker 1: a record company point of view, is a smart thing.
- 8:29Speaker 1: It's like and they sort of were pushing the point
- 8:32Speaker 1: and let's do a video for this. Let's do that,
- 8:33Speaker 1: and then we'll worry about you stupid head begging bullshit
- 8:36Speaker 1: later that, you know, And you know, we went all
- 8:38Speaker 1: pumped about that, but we were kind of on a
- 8:40Speaker 1: promise that, Okay, we'll do that and then we'll get
- 8:42Speaker 1: back to what we consider our serious stuff.
- 8:46Speaker 3: And some of us didn't like that.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I remember, like I was speaking to I've spoken to
- 8:52Speaker 1: Hutchi about it a lot, and I think he was
- 8:55Speaker 1: kind of a bit embarrassed about it at one stage,
- 8:58Speaker 1: because you know, we were kind of known for that,
- 9:00Speaker 1: whereas we did so much other stuff.
- 9:02Speaker 3: But I think these days he's come around because you
- 9:06Speaker 3: can see it for what it is.
- 9:07Speaker 1: There's a lot of people that know our nastiest shit,
- 9:09Speaker 1: or have got all of our albums because one day
- 9:12Speaker 1: they were listen to the radio they heard Dack on
- 9:14Speaker 1: Me Baby with double Kickers and death metal vocals, and
- 9:17Speaker 1: they went, what the hell is this and they got
- 9:19Speaker 1: into that, which led them to the other songs that's went,
- 9:22Speaker 1: you know what, these assholes up too bad after all? So,
- 9:25Speaker 1: you know, I think it was again, it was not
- 9:28Speaker 1: like a very measured sort of step. It just sort
- 9:32Speaker 1: of happened, But yeah, I don't know that.
- 9:35Speaker 3: We're all totally pumped about that was what was getting pushed.
- 9:38Speaker 3: But you know, so be it. I don't.
- 9:42Speaker 1: I'd rather be known as that dank on me baby
- 9:44Speaker 1: band than never Who are you guys?
- 9:46Speaker 2: Yeah true.
- 9:48Speaker 4: True Now actually left the band in two thousand and two.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Frank of what changed direction for the next album, Blood eighth,
- 9:55Speaker 4: which had more sort of a thrash metal influence. So
- 9:57Speaker 4: was that a deliberate shift to break out of baby cycle?
- 10:02Speaker 1: No, when you say the baby's cycle, that's so cool.
- 10:09Speaker 1: The baby cycle. Up this interview, you might find that
- 10:12Speaker 1: you're pregnant. No, no, no, Like even then, we didn't
- 10:21Speaker 1: even feel the baby cycle so much. It was a
- 10:24Speaker 1: sort of phantom pregnancy. Really we knew what was going on,
- 10:28Speaker 1: but we also head down in songs like fake as
- 10:32Speaker 1: Fuck and like you know, all our other ship. You know,
- 10:36Speaker 1: we didn't really sort of notice that much, and we
- 10:40Speaker 1: still would play it occasionally, like jeez, we played it
- 10:42Speaker 1: in front of a Slagher crowd. We played it a
- 10:43Speaker 1: metal for the brain we are on purposely played it
- 10:47Speaker 1: where it was very inappropriate, you know, just to see,
- 10:51Speaker 1: you know, the real staunch death metal, you know, raw meat,
- 10:57Speaker 1: blood drinking dudes go, this is some gay ship. And
- 11:03Speaker 1: by the end of it, you know, like that there
- 11:05Speaker 1: are leather clad started wristbands up there going yeah, you know.
- 11:10Speaker 3: But you know, so we.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Weren't really like I wasn't in particular, I didn't really know.
- 11:16Speaker 3: I wasn't really aware that it was out there that
- 11:18Speaker 3: much as the sex.
- 11:19Speaker 1: We're so focused on what we were doing, and then
- 11:22Speaker 1: then when we change singers again, it wasn't really that
- 11:27Speaker 1: strategic as far as okay, let's change our sound, let's
- 11:33Speaker 1: focus on doing taking this kind of direction. We just
- 11:37Speaker 1: did what we did and what was you know, what
- 11:41Speaker 1: we were into at the time. And again, as a
- 11:44Speaker 1: probably keep saying this a lot because it's sort of
- 11:46Speaker 1: come back full circle to that that's kind of been
- 11:50Speaker 1: the whole thing behind franken Bucket's. It's almost like, you know,
- 11:55Speaker 1: a brand name to a corporation that puts out music
- 11:58Speaker 1: and other very historypid you know, and you know, some
- 12:05Speaker 1: bands like Slater for instance, or you know certain bands,
- 12:07Speaker 1: is like they're got to do what they're going to do,
- 12:10Speaker 1: and that's what people expect.
- 12:12Speaker 3: I think we're very lucky here.
- 12:13Speaker 1: We've been one band that's sort of gotten away with
- 12:16Speaker 1: people kind of expect the unexpected from us, and you know,
- 12:21Speaker 1: on every album there's like probably you know, a rock song,
- 12:25Speaker 1: there's probably something that Broadlines have been a little bit
- 12:27Speaker 1: more commercial than something that's very uncommercial, you know.
- 12:30Speaker 3: So you know, it's very much about what feels right
- 12:36Speaker 3: at the time.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I'm never you know, I don't need the same food
- 12:40Speaker 1: every day, you know, I don't always want the same
- 12:42Speaker 1: want to watch.
- 12:43Speaker 3: The same movies. And you know, one day I'll.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Get up and I had a bad dream, so I
- 12:49Speaker 1: want to write a soft song or you know, just
- 12:51Speaker 1: I mean to do something that's I don't know, more
- 12:56Speaker 1: of a punk feel or something that's got more a
- 12:57Speaker 1: bit more of a funky kind of feel. And then
- 12:59Speaker 1: the next day it up and it's like straight back
- 13:01Speaker 1: to blast beats and you know, the more speedy sort
- 13:05Speaker 1: of stuff. That's it's kind of anything goes.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Now.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Fast forward twenty years and Frankie Brocker having the twenty
- 13:14Speaker 4: fifth anniversary bash at the Bendigo Hotel, which saw every
- 13:17Speaker 4: member from the band's history invited to play at least
- 13:19Speaker 4: one song. So were you confident Hutch he would accept
- 13:23Speaker 4: You've invited to jump up in places you hadn't really
- 13:25Speaker 4: spoken to him. Does he left the band, Well.
- 13:28Speaker 1: It wouldn't have been the first time I've had to
- 13:29Speaker 1: hold him down to make him do things, So I
- 13:32Speaker 1: figure I'm.
- 13:33Speaker 3: A little bit tall than him out yet.
- 13:35Speaker 6: No.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Before that was talked about a lot over the years
- 13:40Speaker 1: about doing a reunion with everybody, and me and Hutchie
- 13:44Speaker 1: didn't speak for quite some time. We were kids when
- 13:47Speaker 1: it ended, so we had no experience in how to
- 13:50Speaker 1: be diplomatic or you know, how to handle things without
- 13:54Speaker 1: being you know, just rash, harsh or just over emotional
- 13:58Speaker 1: and stuff. So things ended kind of bitter. And the
- 14:01Speaker 1: other communication was what she'd say, have you seen the
- 14:05Speaker 1: boys from Frankly?
- 14:06Speaker 3: Tell him? I said, get fucked? Did he now? Or
- 14:09Speaker 3: when you see him? You told him for me? Then
- 14:11Speaker 3: I said, get fucked. There was a whole lot of
- 14:14Speaker 3: shit's thatking going on and all that, which is normal.
- 14:17Speaker 3: But so you know, for a while when I was.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Talked about it, I was like, yeah, that'll never happen, ah,
- 14:22Speaker 1: because like you know, that's still pretty bitter.
- 14:25Speaker 3: But you know, we were kids then and sort of
- 14:29Speaker 3: grown up over the years.
- 14:30Speaker 1: And well gotten bigger, don't how much we've grown up,
- 14:34Speaker 1: but like, you know, just just even sort of thinking
- 14:38Speaker 1: about what we were pissed off about or what it
- 14:40Speaker 1: was like. I don't know, when we were twenty years
- 14:42Speaker 1: old or something, and my friends were Hutchy's friends still,
- 14:46Speaker 1: and you know, we kept on here and know, you
- 14:48Speaker 1: guys should really chat it. And you know that everybody,
- 14:50Speaker 1: you guys have changed and he's changed. And I figure.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Well, my friends are his friends, so they're probably right.
- 14:56Speaker 3: They're not trying to sell me anything.
- 14:57Speaker 1: And then I started looking into what he'd been up too,
- 15:00Speaker 1: and which brought me to like his artwork, and I
- 15:02Speaker 1: noticed how I was very glad to see that he
- 15:04Speaker 1: was doing artistic stuff and I thought it was really good.
- 15:09Speaker 1: You know what, there's an inn and next time I
- 15:12Speaker 1: see him, I'll mention that.
- 15:14Speaker 3: And we played a gig and I think Sherry Bar
- 15:21Speaker 3: and somebody said to me, oh, houch, he's here.
- 15:24Speaker 1: I was like, okay, And I was just walking out
- 15:28Speaker 1: saw him sitting over in the corner with some people,
- 15:30Speaker 1: and I just decided, you know what, I'll go up
- 15:33Speaker 1: say good air.
- 15:34Speaker 3: And so I just went up and said, here you go.
- 15:35Speaker 1: A man shook his hand and said, I really enjoy
- 15:38Speaker 1: your artwork, and I think your artwork's really good.
- 15:40Speaker 3: I said we should catch up sometime and have a chat.
- 15:42Speaker 1: And probably a few messages went back and forth, and
- 15:46Speaker 1: then we had the phone call, and I think the
- 15:48Speaker 1: first phone call went for about three hours, and then
- 15:51Speaker 1: we had another one, and then there was all these
- 15:52Speaker 1: like we should get together and hang out, and we
- 15:55Speaker 1: realized all that bullshit that we were upset about, which
- 15:57Speaker 1: we can't even really remember, most importantly, the same dick
- 16:03Speaker 1: and fart jokes and eighties movies and silly Star Wars
- 16:07Speaker 1: quotes and Revenge of the Nerds and Rambow and Mad
- 16:11Speaker 1: Mats and all the all the.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Same stuff that we were laughing about.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Here we are pushing fifty, we're still giggling about the
- 16:16Speaker 1: same ship. And so it was like, wow, if we
- 16:20Speaker 1: get along the same as we did when we're kids.
- 16:22Speaker 1: And that's when I you know, we talked about getting
- 16:25Speaker 1: together to hang out, and we did actually came over, and.
- 16:32Speaker 3: Shit, it was like being teenagers.
- 16:33Speaker 1: All we did was we watched movies and listened to
- 16:35Speaker 1: like full records together and talked about making more music together,
- 16:40Speaker 1: and we just we just seemed to get along really
- 16:43Speaker 1: really well without you know, without any other bullshit sort
- 16:47Speaker 1: of surrounding us. And then we just started to hang
- 16:49Speaker 1: out as friends on a on a pretty regular basis.
- 16:53Speaker 1: So I live out the back of umfuck. I live
- 16:56Speaker 1: out sort of away from the big smoke.
- 17:00Speaker 3: I don't really.
- 17:01Speaker 1: See that many people, and HUTCHI started to come out
- 17:04Speaker 1: and visit a lot, and there we were eating taco
- 17:07Speaker 1: metal eaten tacos and just listening to records and just
- 17:11Speaker 1: doing you know, the social things. So and we were
- 17:15Speaker 1: constantly talking about making more music, and Hachi really wanted
- 17:21Speaker 1: to do side projects with me, and I really wanted
- 17:23Speaker 1: to do them with him, but it was sort of
- 17:24Speaker 1: hard because realistically, knowing how much time any project takes,
- 17:32Speaker 1: it was sort of I was reluctant to sort of
- 17:33Speaker 1: want to get into another thing because even though I
- 17:36Speaker 1: got called a side project, both balls go right in
- 17:38Speaker 1: the front, you know, and I just can't help myself
- 17:40Speaker 1: getting real keen deep and Frankenbach was still taking up
- 17:45Speaker 1: the majority of my time, so I was reluctant to
- 17:47Speaker 1: sort of start another project. And then, you know, Hach,
- 17:53Speaker 1: you we were just sort of hanging out as friends
- 17:55Speaker 1: and the outskirts.
- 17:57Speaker 4: After that extremely long winded intro actually where we started
- 18:00Speaker 4: with Hutchy backfrunning franken Bock, but people were just starting
- 18:04Speaker 4: to get used to having Dan mcnevil back bro. So
- 18:06Speaker 4: was it an easy decision to make to replace an
- 18:09Speaker 4: X with an ext.
- 18:13Speaker 3: It was very easy. It was very easy. As a
- 18:16Speaker 3: matter of fact, I don't know if we even made
- 18:17Speaker 3: that decision.
- 18:18Speaker 1: I think the god of Thunder might have had something
- 18:21Speaker 1: to do with that, because I was very much had
- 18:23Speaker 1: a loss of what to do. I'd written old, you know,
- 18:26Speaker 1: a bunch of songs that you know, we'd planned to
- 18:30Speaker 1: record and at one stage that we've planned to record
- 18:32Speaker 1: with possibly hutch and Dan. That sort of fizzled out
- 18:34Speaker 1: somewhat and then Dan was gonna, you know, just sing
- 18:38Speaker 1: on the album and stuff.
- 18:41Speaker 3: And when you know, I spoke to him about, you know, what.
- 18:47Speaker 1: We were going to do, and he sort of told
- 18:48Speaker 1: me that he had, you know, this business that he's
- 18:51Speaker 1: involved in tone Dealer, and his time was a problem
- 18:57Speaker 1: with work and everything that else that he was doing.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Didn't know whether he could commit or when he could commit,
- 19:05Speaker 1: and which saw and you know, he didn't know if
- 19:09Speaker 1: he was going to be able to do the next
- 19:11Speaker 1: album just you know, there's no problems internally, we're all
- 19:16Speaker 1: everything was fine on a friendship basis and all that
- 19:18Speaker 1: sort of thing, but that was just a time and
- 19:21Speaker 1: focus thing. So when Dan pretty much sort of said
- 19:24Speaker 1: that he didn't know if he could do it anymore,
- 19:27Speaker 1: which sort of left me sort of going, oh, this
- 19:31Speaker 1: is all I want to do, and what I definitely
- 19:33Speaker 1: don't really want to do is wait a whole lot more.
- 19:38Speaker 3: That's one thing about being in a band. People think
- 19:41Speaker 3: it's all it's.
- 19:42Speaker 1: A glamor and rock and roll and all this, but
- 19:44Speaker 1: that's a big bag of waiting.
- 19:46Speaker 3: As you would know, there's a lot of waiting that
- 19:48Speaker 3: goes around.
- 19:49Speaker 1: And so I'm like, well, I was sort of broken
- 19:53Speaker 1: for a few days about what to do, and I
- 19:56Speaker 1: did contemplate the idea of going, you know, it's time
- 20:00Speaker 1: to start over again and start with a new band name,
- 20:06Speaker 1: new paint job, knew everything, and come back again, because
- 20:09Speaker 1: the idea, Hi, we're Frankly and he's our news singer,
- 20:14Speaker 1: like you know, so many things down the line that
- 20:17Speaker 1: was sort of like I'm becoming that band of that
- 20:20Speaker 1: guy that's now the only one that was in there
- 20:23Speaker 1: and sort of looking a bit sad. So I thought
- 20:25Speaker 1: it would be ridiculous to come back with another trying
- 20:28Speaker 1: to introduce another singer and another line up type thing.
- 20:31Speaker 1: So I was kind of like, not really sure what
- 20:33Speaker 1: to do, and I just had again, me and Hutch
- 20:37Speaker 1: we're just socially talking a lot, and he rang me
- 20:41Speaker 1: up one day and said, hey, what's going on. I said, oh, yeah,
- 20:44Speaker 1: not much man, And straight away he said what's wrong?
- 20:47Speaker 1: You know, I couldn't really hide that. I was pretty down. Said,
- 20:50Speaker 1: oh man, it's not happened again. You know, this band
- 20:53Speaker 1: was sort of up and running and now we've sort of,
- 20:57Speaker 1: you know, hit the skids, and I'm just kind of broken.
- 21:00Speaker 3: I don't really know what to do.
- 21:01Speaker 1: And and that's when Adam suggested, well, by no means
- 21:07Speaker 1: am I trying to get back in or anything like that.
- 21:09Speaker 3: But I'm very much still enjoy just making.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Up vocals and I still like just writing and all that,
- 21:17Speaker 1: he said, rather than going out and partying for a
- 21:19Speaker 1: weekend and go and seeing someone's band and you know,
- 21:22Speaker 1: look at my wounds the next.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Day with no sleep and you know, half a hangover
- 21:25Speaker 3: or whatever, Is it okay?
- 21:27Speaker 1: If you send me the stuff and just for my
- 21:29Speaker 1: you know, for ships and giggles and something to do.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Mind if I have a crack at just you know,
- 21:34Speaker 1: seeing if I can make up something to it and
- 21:35Speaker 1: I'll send it to you and they will listen, to
- 21:37Speaker 1: have a laugh ever whatever, and no one.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Needs to hear it. Just something fun. And he did that.
- 21:44Speaker 1: And here you get that feeling you're looking around about
- 21:48Speaker 1: what you're gonna do, what you're gonna do, what you're
- 21:50Speaker 1: gonna do, and it's just it's just really obvious what's
- 21:53Speaker 1: meant to happen.
- 21:54Speaker 3: And it felt like at the time, and it's what's
- 21:57Speaker 3: been happening all the way through the last couple of months.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Is you don't have to think too hard about which
- 22:04Speaker 3: direction to take the path. If you open your eyes,
- 22:07Speaker 3: it's just right in front of you.
- 22:08Speaker 1: And so the idea of getting another singer and again
- 22:13Speaker 1: will seem like ridiculous. I couldn't sort of do that.
- 22:15Speaker 1: But the idea of getting back the original singer and
- 22:20Speaker 1: going back to the original formula, well, if that's an option,
- 22:24Speaker 1: I'd be like, you know, a fool not to do that.
- 22:26Speaker 3: And basically it felt like all we had to do.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Is just get on board and go with the flow.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Things are moving in that direction anyway.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Now we've finished our history lesson for the day, Mate,
- 22:40Speaker 4: We've gone through enough history. How about we focus on
- 22:42Speaker 4: some new music because Frank and Bot have been creating,
- 22:46Speaker 4: they have been recording, and the outcome is Demon Tantrum.
- 22:51Speaker 4: So that's going to be the first taste of the
- 22:53Speaker 4: back to the future. Bok tell us about the song.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Yes, Yes, it's a nice number, that one is. Yeah,
- 23:03Speaker 3: that that song.
- 23:05Speaker 1: That song came about with a song written quite a
- 23:08Speaker 1: while ago, and Dan and Hutch were going to sort
- 23:14Speaker 1: of have a go at that and they did have
- 23:15Speaker 1: a go over it, and then it got kind of
- 23:18Speaker 1: got left and then got pushed aside, and then sort
- 23:23Speaker 1: of really we just moved on and started doing other stuff.
- 23:26Speaker 1: And then when Adam came back in, like, we pulled
- 23:29Speaker 1: up that song and that old recording and the general
- 23:34Speaker 1: consensus about, you know, with everybody in the band except myself,
- 23:38Speaker 1: because I was kind of like, I don't know if
- 23:40Speaker 1: it's this. I don't know if it's that. Everybody went,
- 23:43Speaker 1: why aren't we releasing this song? Why haven't we released
- 23:47Speaker 1: this song? I Like, I don't know it's this and
- 23:51Speaker 1: I didn't think anybody. We rode tested some some people
- 23:55Speaker 1: and all the feedback was good. And the strange thing
- 24:00Speaker 1: about that song is I wrote it in a particular way,
- 24:05Speaker 1: and then when they were working out vocals, things got
- 24:08Speaker 1: edited a little bit and the structure got changed around,
- 24:11Speaker 1: and then we we started playing it live and now,
- 24:16Speaker 1: and it's strange. It's like that song's it's own monster.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I feel like I'm actually learning another band's song, even
- 24:24Speaker 1: though I wrote it just the way we do it.
- 24:25Speaker 1: It's it's like none of our other songs. It's it
- 24:29Speaker 1: seems to have very much a life of its own.
- 24:32Speaker 1: It's it's it's real dark, it's real cheeky in a way.
- 24:38Speaker 1: But yeah, it's it's like nothing else we've ever done.
- 24:43Speaker 1: It's it's it's it's its own thing, hard to describe.
- 24:49Speaker 1: It's something that you got to hear. Even when I
- 24:51Speaker 1: hear it, I hear it like it's somebody else's song,
- 24:54Speaker 1: and it's like, where the hell did that come from?
- 24:55Speaker 4: You know?
- 24:56Speaker 1: And it's like it refused to be contained, that song.
- 25:00Speaker 1: And then one of Hutchey's friends also said, how wouldn't
- 25:05Speaker 1: I make it a video for that song? Best video
- 25:07Speaker 1: I've ever been involved in because I went Okay. Usually
- 25:12Speaker 1: I'm like renting vans and automatic weapons and I'm down
- 25:14Speaker 1: to the two dollars shot and lipstick and costumes and
- 25:17Speaker 1: bloody dancing girls and all that. But this one I
- 25:19Speaker 1: just went, yeah, cool, and then it got sent back
- 25:22Speaker 1: to us. And I remember after my first watch to
- 25:26Speaker 1: the video, I couldn't believe how much it suited the song.
- 25:31Speaker 1: But when it finished, usually there's a like, oh that
- 25:35Speaker 1: was cool or that was not cool.
- 25:37Speaker 3: But it was like, sat there in silence for a minute,
- 25:40Speaker 3: went what the hell just happened? Which really suited the song.
- 25:45Speaker 3: It's married up to the song really really well.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Now, just to prove musician has always learned from history
- 25:51Speaker 2: bro breaking back. I've also been.
- 25:53Speaker 4: Working on another beefed up cover of a known and
- 25:56Speaker 4: loved Keirzy pop song.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Are we allowed to talk about that?
- 26:01Speaker 3: I think we just did.
- 26:02Speaker 2: We didn't say too much.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Feels good breaking the rules. Yeah we can talk about
- 26:11Speaker 1: it some. Yeah, we did a song done, No I
- 26:15Speaker 1: like it again.
- 26:17Speaker 3: Talking to.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Me, actually, my wife says to me, you guys are disgusting.
- 26:23Speaker 1: You know that because he's always on the phone line,
- 26:25Speaker 1: like beat and butt head, laughing and joke and carrying
- 26:27Speaker 1: on with that stupid ship. And I happened to be
- 26:30Speaker 1: talking to him one night and there was a movie
- 26:34Speaker 1: on in the background. This song, this song I've always
- 26:38Speaker 1: wanted to cover this song, and with Hutches very.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Encouraging, enthusiastic, you know, he wanted.
- 26:47Speaker 1: To be that's good. Yeah, we should try it, man,
- 26:49Speaker 1: we should try it. And he said, yeah, do it, man, Yeah,
- 26:51Speaker 1: do it. So it was the next day I again
- 26:55Speaker 1: half weren't it recorded a version, send it over to him. Bang,
- 27:02Speaker 1: come back the next day with vocals, and we're like,
- 27:05Speaker 1: this is hilarious, this is this is fun and it's
- 27:10Speaker 1: not the most serious thing in the world, but it's
- 27:13Speaker 1: packed full of tongue in cheek and and just made
- 27:16Speaker 1: everybody smile. And we went again back with what frankm
- 27:19Speaker 1: whatf used to be?
- 27:21Speaker 3: Why not?
- 27:21Speaker 1: We're like, what are people going to think about this?
- 27:24Speaker 1: And bad reactions better than no reactions.
- 27:28Speaker 4: Like those two songs of fair representation of what to
- 27:31Speaker 4: expect musically, or is it just a mixed bag of assortments?
- 27:36Speaker 3: Not even close.
- 27:38Speaker 1: No, it's it's like you know when you say oh
- 27:44Speaker 1: and then you hit me a curveball.
- 27:45Speaker 3: Wellthough they're all curveballs.
- 27:47Speaker 1: It's no, it's not really a representation of it, like
- 27:52Speaker 1: do you mean tantrums, It's thing the covers and like
- 27:56Speaker 1: a bum full of Smarties, ridiculous fun, easy go and
- 28:01Speaker 1: jet very similar to the Don't Call Me Baby thing.
- 28:05Speaker 3: The cover.
- 28:07Speaker 1: And the album is very much its own thing.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Back to just well Franken Bac does a bit of heavy,
- 28:18Speaker 3: bit of groove. Yeah, it's I like that.
- 28:26Speaker 1: We It's hard to describe because if I can say
- 28:27Speaker 1: it was like, oh, you know, factory, it's just like that,
- 28:30Speaker 1: it's not like that.
- 28:30Speaker 3: It's like it's a it's a.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Mixed bag of what we do. It's interesting that after
- 28:35Speaker 1: all these years. I like the fact that people come
- 28:39Speaker 1: up and say, you've had so many lineup changes and
- 28:42Speaker 1: and so many things are different and all that, but
- 28:45Speaker 1: you still got that same sound. It's still got that
- 28:48Speaker 1: same groove, it's still got that original thing that it
- 28:50Speaker 1: had back in the day. And the new stuff is
- 28:53Speaker 1: very different. I purposely tried to make stuff that's a
- 28:57Speaker 1: bit more bouncy. I wanted to make people move rather
- 29:00Speaker 1: than just mosh and both say okay, you know a
- 29:03Speaker 1: bit of dancing is always could but.
- 29:06Speaker 3: Intentionally a lot of energy on there. Yeah.
- 29:10Speaker 4: The other piece of good news has only been announced
- 29:12Speaker 4: the last week is break a bottle jet not around
- 29:15Speaker 4: the country with alien and farmer c Ky.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yeah, pretty excited about that. Yep, that's that's
- 29:24Speaker 1: unreal because you know, again, the god of Thunder that
- 29:30Speaker 1: I talk about, you know, people believe in this. People
- 29:32Speaker 1: believe in that. I don't know if I believe it,
- 29:34Speaker 1: but I'd like to talk about it. There's a god
- 29:36Speaker 1: of thunder out there if you want to play rock
- 29:38Speaker 1: and roll, and it will test you and test you
- 29:40Speaker 1: and test you. And if you keep pushing forward and
- 29:44Speaker 1: pass all the tests, that eventually the god of Thunder
- 29:47Speaker 1: throws you a few bones and lets things go your
- 29:50Speaker 1: way for a little bit and then you start thinking,
- 29:52Speaker 1: all right, off we go and then whack, it's back
- 29:55Speaker 1: to struggle again and then you know, more tests. But
- 30:00Speaker 1: with what we're doing, strangely, I think I might have
- 30:05Speaker 1: passed some of these tests, probably cheated, but we we've
- 30:08Speaker 1: passed a few of these tests, and things are organically
- 30:14Speaker 1: naturally just sort of lining up for us, which is crazy.
- 30:18Speaker 1: It's it's sort of a little bit unsettling when things
- 30:21Speaker 1: work out. Yeah, there's things have been, and there's a
- 30:26Speaker 1: little bit of a belief at the moment that like
- 30:28Speaker 1: and if it doesn't happen, or it's too hard, or
- 30:31Speaker 1: it's just can't be well and it's clearly not meant
- 30:36Speaker 1: to be.
- 30:37Speaker 4: Yeah, Now, before I let you go, mate, I've started
- 30:40Speaker 4: a new segment and heavy called photo Bomb, where basically
- 30:43Speaker 4: before we chat, I troll your social media for photos
- 30:46Speaker 4: that I spake to you and ask you to tell
- 30:48Speaker 4: us a little bit more about them I.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Have found for you. Where do I start? They're all
- 30:55Speaker 2: so good right now? About this one?
- 30:59Speaker 1: Oh ah, yes, I remember that that was in New Zealand.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Believe it or not, I think I was how quite
- 31:12Speaker 1: inebriated in some manner. Maybe I was just excited about
- 31:17Speaker 1: having a you know, being in New Zealand. But I
- 31:21Speaker 1: think that was that was a light fixture. Maybe I
- 31:25Speaker 1: wanted to be rock and roll in this story. Something
- 31:27Speaker 1: in a hotel room. But yes, yes, I broke that
- 31:31Speaker 1: and I think I wasn't.
- 31:33Speaker 3: I haven't seen it.
- 31:34Speaker 1: I don't know if i'm I think I might have
- 31:35Speaker 1: filled it full of something and I was drinking out
- 31:37Speaker 1: of the actual light picture, which is a pretty smart idea.
- 31:41Speaker 2: I didn't turned off of the wall.
- 31:44Speaker 1: But what what was amazing is Mick Boley drummer at.
- 31:49Speaker 3: The time, rather than being annoyed at my sort of
- 31:53Speaker 3: I did have a bit of a destructive stupid behavior
- 31:55Speaker 3: back in the day.
- 31:57Speaker 1: It often begging me on going yeah man, yeah, yeah,
- 31:59Speaker 1: that really stupid man. But the crazy thing is Mick
- 32:04Speaker 1: would get up in the morning and he would go around.
- 32:07Speaker 3: He'd got you in the shops. He gets super.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Glue and things like that, and he would put everything
- 32:12Speaker 1: back together to the point look like nothing had been touched.
- 32:17Speaker 1: I mean, the next person that touched it, the whole
- 32:18Speaker 1: thing will fall apart, but long enough for us to like,
- 32:22Speaker 1: you know, get on, get in the van and getting
- 32:25Speaker 1: to the next town before they realized that we destroyed
- 32:28Speaker 1: the whole place. Mick, he did a lot of work
- 32:31Speaker 1: putting things back together. It was amazing.
- 32:33Speaker 3: So, well, that's a bit of a shock to see
- 32:35Speaker 3: that one again.
- 32:36Speaker 2: A right, that's what I Who is this good looking restart.
- 32:47Speaker 3: That could only be uncle back. I think that might
- 32:51Speaker 3: be a manager.
- 32:53Speaker 2: He's looking very comfortable and he he is. He does
- 32:55Speaker 2: that though it doesn't much else.
- 32:59Speaker 1: Yeah, see likes to it, likes to be horizontal as
- 33:04Speaker 1: much as possible.
- 33:06Speaker 2: But this is what I wanted to show.
- 33:08Speaker 4: Like, I've seen a lot of money shops in what's
- 33:10Speaker 4: I made, But I want to know exactly what you
- 33:12Speaker 4: were thinking about for this to happen.
- 33:18Speaker 3: I think I was thinking, oh God, I left the
- 33:21Speaker 3: oven on at home. Now a Jesus, am I gonna
- 33:29Speaker 3: make it? Am I gonna through this?
- 33:33Speaker 1: I remember the show, obviously, I can't remember exactly what
- 33:36Speaker 1: I was thinking then, but I think I was thinking,
- 33:40Speaker 1: this sweat is really stinging my eyes, but just keep
- 33:45Speaker 1: going because it sounds good.
- 33:48Speaker 2: More sexual in nature than that made. I have a
- 33:50Speaker 2: good look. Have a looked at your eyes and your face.
- 33:53Speaker 2: You love playing guitar.
- 33:56Speaker 1: You would know better than anybody that that is not
- 33:59Speaker 1: my fuck face.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Ha. That's your resting.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Oh actually no, you'res facing the other way and being
- 34:04Speaker 1: held down.
- 34:08Speaker 2: On that bed that we just saw in the last photo.
- 34:13Speaker 3: That's the classic manager photo.
- 34:16Speaker 2: I couldn't find any other ones. All right, we're gonna
- 34:18Speaker 2: have to cut it off there.
- 34:19Speaker 4: I know you're going to give us a tour of
- 34:20Speaker 4: Block headquarters, but I'm seven minutes late for my next interview.
- 34:24Speaker 3: Man, it's like the Tesla studio anyway. It is massive,
- 34:27Speaker 3: so there's not enough time.
- 34:29Speaker 2: I'm sure we'll talk again in the future.
- 34:31Speaker 3: Rocket Man.
- 34:32Speaker 2: All right, rather thanks for your time. So much happening
- 34:35Speaker 2: with franken Bo. Demon Hunter is out now.
- 34:37Speaker 1: Demon tantrum trum, goddamn it, answer them not Demon Hunter,
- 34:41Speaker 1: make me have a tantrum like an idiot.
- 34:43Speaker 2: I had lots of supported.
- 34:46Speaker 4: The future looks bright, indeed, my friend. Good to see
- 34:48Speaker 4: a smile on your face.
- 35:22Speaker 7: Whatever job was, just the Destinations claim the best amatic
- 35:39Speaker 7: rolesbody shows the massination tallo yah, choke, Wow, damn.
- 35:47Speaker 6: You wokin down.
- 35:49Speaker 3: Take yourself to be sack.
