Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_03: Hey, what do you guys think about this?
- 0:01SPEAKER_03: I've gone through this system.
- 0:03SPEAKER_03: It here's the 12 benefits.
- 0:05SPEAKER_03: Here's three ways that I think might be downfalls.
- 0:08SPEAKER_03: What's your guys' thoughts?
- 0:09SPEAKER_03: So we do it between the three of us, and they're like, hey, let's have the service managers look at this.
- 0:13SPEAKER_03: Let's have the office look at this.
- 0:14SPEAKER_03: And like, I kind of like that.
- 0:15SPEAKER_03: I kind of like that.
- 0:16SPEAKER_03: And maybe you get a subpar company to help bring some advice as well.
- 0:20SPEAKER_03: And they're like, all right, let's go.
- 0:22SPEAKER_03: Then that helps that idea really grow legs.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: Hey everyone, welcome to Crossroads Conversations with the Lewis brothers, where we aim to share real stories about running a successful family business, working through adversity, and pouring back into the community that keeps our doors open.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: We're your hosts, Taylor Matt, and Shelby, and we'll bring you relevant local business advice and automotive insights that are sure to change the way you look at running a business.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: And may even throw in a plug for you to do business with us.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: Welcome to the Lewis Brothers Podcast, episode number 60.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Woo! Getting into a fun one today.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: I love this because of the relevance of what is happening, obviously, during technology and everything else.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: But noise starts to signal how to tune out the leadership advice that doesn't apply to you.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: So good.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: There's no shortage of leadership advice out there.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: Books, podcasts, TikToks, quotes on LinkedIn, everyone's an expert.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: Mm-hmm.
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: But how do you know who to really listen to and what's relevant to your business?
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: All that and more that we're going to dive into on today's topic of the podcast.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: But Shelby, what happened last week?
- 1:30SPEAKER_03: Recap from last week: The silent killer of business assumptions.
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:36SPEAKER_03: We talked about it and all that we know and all that we've learned, assuming when to, when not to, really to fact check, get the details.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: That was episode 59.
- 1:45SPEAKER_03: You can find Crossroad Conversations Podcast.com or any of our socials.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: Make sure that you like and subscribe to pick up on that.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: No, that's good stuff.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: Hey, we got to talk about what's in the garage before we get into all the details today.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: It's going to be a good one.
- 1:58SPEAKER_01: I like that subject you picked, Taylor.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: But let's talk about the garage.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: What I'm bringing to you today is we're getting ready for winter.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: We're getting ready to be easier on your wallet, okay, both on your monthly payment and on fuel savings.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: Today is the Jeep Compass.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: And the Jeep Compass has deep Jeep roots on all of its off-road capability, but has brought in luxury style from the Grand Cherokee.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: And a lot of these you'll find have that top hat.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: Remember how you were talking about with the expedition last week?
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: Also from the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagone Air, where the top part's black and the white or the silver.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: It's got the great over 10-inch screen on the inside.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: All Jeep Compasses come full-wheel drive, by the way, too.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: Love that.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: So you don't have to come in asking.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: If you're looking for a highly capable vehicle, it's the Jeep Compass.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: Not only that, the full-wheel drive Jeep Compasses start at under$30,000 and get over 30 miles per gallon.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: So when you start taking all that together, it's a great vehicle.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: We sell these things in masses.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: They're very reliable, great engines, great powertrain.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: And of course, it's got the Jeep name behind it.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: You know what I love about the Ram Jeep side, everything else in there.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: They just realize that they need to include the frills.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: They need to include the looks, and it has it all.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: It's not like you've got to a la cart this to get it.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: It's got the two-tone top, it's got the big screening, it's got four-wheel drive standard, ready to go, under 30,000, over 30 miles to gallon.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: That's so good.
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: Which is huge going in there.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: Hey, diving in today, advice overload era.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: We talked about this.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: Everyone out there is an expert.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Everybody's got their own talk.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: Everybody's got their own podcast.
- 3:37SPEAKER_02: We're drowning in business content.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: Books, reels, blogs, workshops, conferences.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: But how do we weed through that?
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Man, that's such a good topic.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: And we're going to get into the details.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: But before before we get into how to weed through it all, I just do want to say, though, is that there's a lot of noise out there, and there's a lot of good stuff, and then there's a lot of fake stuff, and there's people giving advice that have never even been in business before.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: But what I do like, what I do like, let's let's go down memory line just a little bit.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: I do like the access that people have to be able to learn from others.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: You know, growing up, we would go to an NADA convention or another convention, and I'd see dad at one of the booths, uh, whether it was sales training or service or marketing.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: And what he was really doing was trying to negotiate and work out a deal to buy the library of cassettes or CDs.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: And at that point in time, there wasn't the internet.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: So if you wanted to listen to, you had to put the cassette tape in or you had to put the CD in, and you listened to the different word tracks.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: And I don't know if y'all remember this, but in his old office over there, he had a bookshelf full of all this how-to stuff and had his what he called his big chief tablet.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: His big chief tablet that you would check out.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: So, hey, I want to check out how to handle objections.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: I want to check out appointment setting.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: I want to check out how to write up the perfect repair order.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: And people would check it out, they'd listen to it, and they'd bring it back.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: No different than going to the library.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: So you fast forward and you take that, and what we've learned from that is now that's exposed to everybody else.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: So there's a real positive about all the energy out there and all that information, but you got to be able to weed through it.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: So I was looking for a stat.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: I saw it the other day, but I didn't save it.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: So I didn't, that means I won't remember it.
- 5:29SPEAKER_03: But in today's world of social or podcast, it's kind of a, if you're in the game, it's kind of a game of noise.
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: And it's about just getting it out there.
- 5:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: And so the stat was something like 65% of people that are giving business advice have never owned or operated a successful business.
- 5:54SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: So first and foremost, you have to one of the check on parameters before you fully engulf yourself in this podcast, uh, even our podcast or someone else's podcast or anything else.
- 6:07SPEAKER_03: Kind of do a fact check real quick and say, hey, what has this person done?
- 6:12SPEAKER_03: And are they going or have they been where I want to be?
- 6:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 6:18SPEAKER_03: They say, you know, how do you become a millionaire?
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: Well, you probably should surround yourself with people who have become millionaires before, right?
- 6:25SPEAKER_03: How do I create a successful business from the ground up?
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: You should probably surround or get your advice from people who have set up and operate successful businesses.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: And so before you just fully start following this social channel or that social channel or this one, you need to say, where is this coming from?
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: Are they actually walking the walk or are they just creating content to get the views and the, you know, we've talked about that many a times about an online website of these people look like a superstar and they have all this going on.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: And then you're like, I want to go visit them.
- 6:59SPEAKER_03: Like, because generally we're in-person people.
- 7:01SPEAKER_03: Let's go learn.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: Like, if the internet shows all this, that must mean there's so much more, right?
- 7:06SPEAKER_03: And so we look it up and like that's at somebody's house.
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: And we're like, uh, something's gotta be wrong.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: And so they're in their basement and their underwear, just yeah, they've got the suit on from the belt up from the Zoom call with an AI background.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: So that would be my first thing is before you fully engulf yourself.
- 7:26SPEAKER_03: Because there's a lot.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: There is.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: So uh here's a simple term for you.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: And this is an old, this is an old quote or a quote or saying.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: We'll say it's a saying.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it's a quote.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Uh, trust but verify.
- 7:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 7:36SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: So when you see something online or even in person, you know, somebody ever told you something, you're like, that sounds really cool, but did they really do that?
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: Verify it before you put it in place.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: Give everybody the benefit of the doubt.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: And and I like to do that, and y'all have heard me talk about it before, is when I'm listening to a speaker or I'm in a class or webinar, even if they say something I don't agree with, I don't allow that to cloud my mind for something that maybe I will agree with that I could put in my toolbox.
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: And it might just be a thought starter in your brain.
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: They might not be delivering the correct message, but they created the idea in your brain, right?
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: So they said, hey, you should think of this.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: And they might not be verifiable, but it spike that idea, and you can find somebody that's verifiable that has done it and will do good with it.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: I will say this too, because there's so many stages of this, and one, I'm gonna tell you what I do here in a second, but before that, is nobody's gonna have the perfect game plan laid out from A to Z for your business or for your situation.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: It just doesn't exist.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: Everybody has different scenarios, they're in different regions, they got different customers, they've got different restrictions, strengths, weaknesses, so on and so forth.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: So just know that there should be nobody online that you can go buy their business plan or listen to their TED talk for three hours, and that's gonna be perfect for your business situation.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: That's just not true.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: It's not true.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: And one of the things that we do a really good job of is we'll listen and we'll hear a podcast or we'll hear a book and we'll share it amongst each other.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: And what we're looking to do is just to take one or two things from that and then integrate it into what we're already doing.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: Just to help what we're doing.
- 9:23SPEAKER_01: It's not broke, but how can we elevate it?
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: We're not looking to scrap it and start all over.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: It's funny because I got a text yesterday from one of the guys from the Twin group and said, Hey, uh, just hired some new sales people.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: Who is mainly doing your sales training and where is that coming from?
- 9:41SPEAKER_03: And I said, Well, we do, right?
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: Um, we do our training uh because we inspect what we expect, but uh we have online modules and I have phone training specifically from this person.
- 9:55SPEAKER_03: I'll send you the link, it's free, here's how you do it.
- 9:58SPEAKER_03: I have objection handling from this person, and here's the link to this, and then I have how to handle the internet customer from this, and then I have classic old school of this, this, and this.
- 10:10SPEAKER_03: So our training manual is at least of six, maybe seven or eight different individuals.
- 10:16SPEAKER_03: And when we've sent managers to training before, it's like you do not have to go become a carbon copy of them or their processes.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: And we you pre-warn them that there's gonna be something they say that triggers you that could completely ruin the entire training.
- 10:31SPEAKER_03: It might be what they say, it might be what they wear, it might be how they present themselves, but just know that you're going for a couple nuggets that you can integrate in your process because more often than not, be like, hey, how'd that go?
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Be like, man, that guy, that guy cussed a lot, or that guy, you know, whatever it might be, like that guy hadn't got a clue.
- 10:51SPEAKER_03: He ain't never sold a car or whatever.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: It's like, okay, no, but what was something good you took from that?
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: I think that's important.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: And because if we really all pull back the layers of every human out there, none of us are perfect.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: None of us are.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: And I've even heard people talk about in church or in business or this or that, they'll start picking on one thing somebody said, and it clouds their mind for all the goodness out there, you know, that's there.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: It it in fact, let's let's talk about this for a second.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: So, depending upon where you get your research from, okay, which is exactly what we're talking about.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: It says anywhere from 73 to 85% of facts or stats that are thrown out there are not true.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: 73 to 85.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: Now, most people would say, well, why do I pay attention to any of it if 70 plus percent is not true?
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm looking for the 30% that is, and I can weave through, okay, and have my radar on to figure out what can help me and what's just total BS.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: You know, and if anybody gets on there and whatever they want to do, but on social, I can tell when they've rented the plane out and it never took off from the runway, and they pull up on the Rolls-Royce or whatever else just to try to get me.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: I now I'm not impressed with that at all.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: I want to see what they said, what they do, and then I'm gonna go verify it with some other research.
- 12:16SPEAKER_03: Like, there's a lot of people that want that that are gonna get super jacked up, like, oh, baby, like somebody's selling a sales course or online training, like, look what it did for me.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: Look what I can do, right?
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: And so, um I think there's that, and I think you got to remember this too, is there is no such thing as instant success and a light switch.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: And if you'll remember that, and and and and and we're all salespeople in here.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: Remember that everybody's out there selling.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: So they're gonna talk about their best, their most successful sales story, their most successful business plan, so on and so forth.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: And that's okay.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: That's okay.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: They did that.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: Um, but you got to take it with a grain of salt and then figure out how does it incorporate in.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: The reason I say all that is I don't want you to get out of this podcast of I shouldn't read any more books, I shouldn't watch any more reels, I shouldn't watch any more YouTube videos.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, no, no.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: That's not true.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: There is great benefits to that.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: You just have to have your filters, like we've talked about out, to verify that it's correct.
- 13:17SPEAKER_03: Well, and in fact, the it might be the opposite.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: If it's 70 to 83% is not true, one, you need to verify it, but two, you need to consume more.
- 13:27SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: But because you're gonna you're gonna have to consume more to get actual factual what works, what's good, and what has some proof to it, right?
- 13:34SPEAKER_03: So don't just say uh, because yesterday in a sales meeting, I had to stop and point out to a guy again of like, stop talking.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: You didn't even let me finish the question.
- 13:45SPEAKER_03: When you come in here, you only know what you know.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: Like we were born with it and you've experienced how many every years of life and you've been around so many people, you only know what you know.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: But if you'll be quiet and listen and listen to a podcast or read a book or surround yourself with people, it could be an opportunity, even if it's 80% BS, there's 20% that could catapult you to a crazy new level.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: And I will say this.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Now, I I like watching whether it's TikTok or or YouTube or real or this or that.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: I I like the shortened version in the video.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: Okay, we all have fast food mentality.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: You know, we want it fast and then we move off.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: But I will say if somebody recommends a book to you, there's a whole lot more work that goes into a book.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: And it's not just blatantly making stuff up.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: Um, so I would say, you know, there's somebody recommends that.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: I I would dive in there.
- 14:38SPEAKER_01: Now, on the social side, you know, because now, and and you're gonna know the number better than I am, but now it's how much content can you put out per day.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: And some people are putting out six, eight, ten, twelve pieces of content per day, per day.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: And if you take somebody that's trying to be a sales trainer or an entrepreneur coach or a C-suite executive or this or that, at some point in time they're gonna run out of content.
- 15:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I know it's all they start reaching.
- 15:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they start real and they start with the stories, and then they get the algorithm boosting, and they're like, this is good, keep feeding the machine, keeping they're like, Well, what am I talking about?
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: And they're like, Hey, let's start back at ground zero, let's tell it again, but a different framework.
- 15:19SPEAKER_03: Let's include someone else in it and let's tell the story, and then they're like, Okay, we're done again.
- 15:23SPEAKER_03: And so then they do start reaching, and people are consuming it, and so they just keep doing it and keep doing it, and it's like we kind of got away from what actually we do.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: So, you know, just before you hit your foot on the gas pedal, listen to it, verify it, and make sure it's good before you put it in place.
- 15:42SPEAKER_01: And you know, the fitness industry is full of that too, of all the people, you know.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: So you talk about entrepreneurs, you talk about fitness.
- 15:48SPEAKER_03: That's so funny because you know, you in my feed the other day, I saw a video and I just died laughing about it.
- 15:54SPEAKER_03: It was like, are you looking for your next?
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: You know, like this guy was like, Like what everybody's yeah, I think he was just totally hating on it.
- 16:01SPEAKER_03: But right, that's what they do.
- 16:02SPEAKER_03: They say, hey, if you want to be an FBO, like Amazon FBO, you need to go to trending things.
- 16:07SPEAKER_03: Hey, I want to lose some weight, fitness, pretty popular thing, right?
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: You want to be in better shape.
- 16:12SPEAKER_03: So this guy said, dude, if you want to be successful in the fitness influencer industry, you need to pump yourself full of steroids and testosterone and line up with somebody who's selling products and now you're selling the products.
- 16:25SPEAKER_03: Who cares that you're just juice so heavy because you're gonna look the parts and everyone's gonna be buying it because you look good and that's what they want to look like.
- 16:34SPEAKER_03: I'm like, that's pretty much what it is, right?
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: The poor guy that's just you know eating his Wheaties and just grinding, he will not get results as fast as that.
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: So they're thinking fast food mentality.
- 16:47SPEAKER_03: So you gotta be careful there of like, okay, let's check the pedigree of this person.
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: Because he was like, no joke, and I'm this is a funny, but it's serious.
- 16:56SPEAKER_03: Just jack yourself full of all the stuff and you're gonna look jacked up and start selling supplements and having influencers and pyramid scheming and off to the race you should go.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: And then that then that's that's part of a short-term business, they'll have short-term success.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: And we've talked about that in business as well.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: But I I was listening to a guy the other day, and this guy had followed for a while, and he'd had some really good, he's a smart guy.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I'd done my research and and he had done some good out there, but then he starts reaching.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: He starts reaching, and multiple things he had said, this uh is the best thing you could do for recovery.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: So started in cold plunge.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't disagree there.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Uh whether it is or it isn't, feels like it is, okay.
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: Um, so and it might just be a placebo effect.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: Whatever.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: I'm taking it on.
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: You know, so then he goes to something else, then he goes to something else, and then the other day it was like red light therapy is the best for this.
- 17:54SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying red light therapy is not good, but I'm just saying you can't just keep saying something else, something else, something else is the best because you lose.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Now his viewership's going down because at some point in time it gets watered down and you're reaching for that content.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I love of listening to that and going through.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: Got we got deep into it there of going through.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: But what I love is it always goes back to surround yourself around with filters that you listen to, because we three can listen to the same, and because of our age difference or anything else, and we have a lot of like a lot of similarities of how we do business and everything.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: But if we sit down in a room and like, hey, what'd you think of this?
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: We'll have some of the same things, but we each have different parts and pieces that one triggered our mind of our nugget we were looking for, and two, hey, this is relevant.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: I think it would be good in our business.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: So never forget that filter, always have that people surrounding you, so then that's able to help make it relevant for your business.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: Help make it relevant for your business.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: So that was really good topic there of going over.
- 19:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:01SPEAKER_03: All right, so let's talk fun fact quiz.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: This week's fun fact quiz is brought to you by us.
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: Okay uh roughly how many businesses, business related books are published every year?
- 19:12SPEAKER_03: Every single year, how many business related books are published every single year?
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: Now you said books take more effort.
- 19:19SPEAKER_03: If you compared those to social media, yes, you would know that.
- 19:22SPEAKER_03: Uh so A, 10,000 new books a year, B, 25,000 new books a year, C 50,000 books a year, or D, 100,000 books per year.
- 19:34SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: That's quite a bit.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: I mean, I guess there's a lot of people out there that write that stuff, but Well, it's funny, no matter what it is from 10,000 to 10,000.
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: I feel like every book you look at is like this is a New York Times bestseller.
- 19:48SPEAKER_03: Uh-huh.
- 19:48SPEAKER_03: But looking at any of those numbers, even if it's 10,000, like what's the chance that you are the New York Times bestseller?
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 19:54SPEAKER_03: I don't know how often they if that's the weekly bestseller, the monthly, or the year, I don't know.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: The answer is not 10,000.
- 20:02SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 20:03SPEAKER_03: It's not a hundred thousand, it's not twenty-five thousand, fifty thousand new now.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: This is not just books, it's business-related books are published every single year.
- 20:13SPEAKER_03: Fun fact quiz of the week.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: Just to put that in perspective, and they don't have the breakdown, but every single day, this is crazy.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: Every single day, 2.6 million videos are uploaded to YouTube.
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: You're not all business.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: I got to get that.
- 20:31SPEAKER_03: No, but people uh like that's where people are at, right?
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: So you talk about the noise 2.6 per day.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: Craig, we gotta get our videos up.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: 2.6 per yeah.
- 20:43SPEAKER_03: It's the same thing we tell our salespeople, hey, did you post something today?
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: It should be, hey, did you post something in the last hour?
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: Because it's gonna get drowned.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: Oh, it'll go to the bottom faster than a 20-pound weight in the bottom of the lake.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: All right, so no, we we we've talked about that.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: Now we got to help the audience out there is what do we put in place without squashing people's creativity and excited that our employees bring ideas to us that they saw, you know, whether they went to a seminar or they they read a book or they they watched a video online.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: But how do we make sure that bad advice doesn't invade our business?
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: And that really comes from trending ideas can sneak into a team's culture.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: You know, and not all modern leadership advice fits every business.
- 21:33SPEAKER_03: Well, that statement kind of alludes to what I would say is what fits in, well, does it fit your culture?
- 21:39SPEAKER_03: Before you go any further, the way that that person is delivering, no matter what they're delivering, is that your culture of delivery.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: And you could take the idea and make it your culture of delivery.
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: But if you're like gonna sign somebody up for a training and it's not your culture, uh then, and I'll tell you like uh story time, and I guess I'll just give you a real deal.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: So we signed up for sales training with this company, and I loved how he was able, like super enthusiastic, right?
- 22:12SPEAKER_03: Most of the training's pretty dry, right?
- 22:14SPEAKER_03: Guys got a suit from 1974, yeah.
- 22:16SPEAKER_03: Uh, and you're like, no, I need some new age energy, right?
- 22:19SPEAKER_03: To keep people watching them, to keep them engaged.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: And so I love this.
- 22:22SPEAKER_03: But every time I looked up, this guy was MFing or cussing this, that.
- 22:29SPEAKER_03: And I was like, that is not our culture.
- 22:31SPEAKER_03: And so, but here's the thing.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: So that was his social.
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: But then I said, Let me give me a trial, let me myself log in and watch your videos.
- 22:41SPEAKER_03: Let me see if you're you're still that wild.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: And what I found is he was not.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: He still was high energy, had the good words, but was not flying off the handle.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: So, okay, this could be good for our team.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: So then when I signed up and I said, Hey, I want you to do a sales rally with our sales team.
- 22:59SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be a zoom call, you're gonna have all my salespeople.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: I said, but look here.
- 23:04SPEAKER_03: If you fly off the handle, in whatever shape, form, sure, we're gonna be done.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: Like, not done with the zoom call, I'll cancel it.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: I said, that's not our culture.
- 23:17SPEAKER_03: I said, no, if you can't get down with that, if that doesn't make sense, I totally get the we might not be a right fit.
- 23:23SPEAKER_03: I like your program, I like your process, but sometimes you get jacked up on the internet.
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: Um, and he's like, Man, and so then we we started texting back and forth, and he's like, dude, that that's total heavily on my heart.
- 23:36SPEAKER_03: Like, people have told me that before, and I've never slowed down to think about it.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: I was like, totally get it.
- 23:42SPEAKER_03: Like, if that, you know, if if that hits you hard, then you should change yourself.
- 23:45SPEAKER_03: But I'm just telling you.
- 23:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 23:47SPEAKER_03: So then on that Zoom call, there was a point where he started going, and I I was standing in front of the class just looking at him, and he's like, All right, let me reset myself because I realize I'm getting out of bounds here.
- 23:58SPEAKER_03: Shelby told me where I needed to be, right?
- 24:00SPEAKER_03: So first and foremost, do they line up with your culture?
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: That that that's so important.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: That's the biggest deal.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's really good.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: I also like, like when I'm listening to people that are self-improvement or self-help, um, I also like to see somebody that's maybe been through a decade or so or a downturn in business.
- 24:19SPEAKER_01: And we really saw this during COVID.
- 24:22SPEAKER_01: And I'm gonna bring this up, and you know I like these guys, but Maxwell.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: So if you look at like a John Maxwell, I uh he's in his late 70s, early 70s now.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: Like he's been doing it since his 20s.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: So you can count the decades there.
- 24:36SPEAKER_01: And and what he taught in the 70s and the 80s and the 90s and the 2000s and 2020, like the principles are still the same.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: How people receive their information is different, but how you treat people and how you run business and how you manage cash flow and how you get in front of people and inventory turn, all that's the same.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it really is.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: So you you take somebody like that, and if they've shown you and that's verified, you can take something that then he has said with full confidence and incorporate it into your team.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: You know, so I think that, you know, that kind of gets into the line of what we're talking about here is, you know, not necessarily modern leadership fits every business.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: I think business practices and the basics, those haven't changed.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: No.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: I think how we connect with people, how we evolve with technology, that stuff has changed.
- 25:31SPEAKER_01: But the actual core of the business is people and products and and and how do you handle yourself and your reputation and your word of mouth is still bigger than any social platform out there.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: That hasn't changed.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think you just evolve in in that delivery, right?
- 25:46SPEAKER_03: But you don't change how and where.
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and there's something I just like stories because they relate.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: So there was a guy that was in the fitness industry.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: We'll speak to that because people talk about that.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: That he said, hey, okay, the theory of jacked up, juiced up, yeah, is one thing, but people won't they didn't always associate with because that was not them.
- 26:07SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 26:08SPEAKER_03: And they were like, that's where I want to be, but that's they don't get me, right?
- 26:12SPEAKER_03: They don't get that I have trouble with going through fast food and not having portion control.
- 26:18SPEAKER_03: So this guy, he actually made a a TV show about it, but he went fit to fat to fit.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: And so he was very fit, and then he went for like 180 days and ate all the stuff.
- 26:31SPEAKER_03: And it was so hard for him.
- 26:32SPEAKER_03: And he gained like 90 pounds because then he wanted to be able to show, hey, I am average or below average.
- 26:40SPEAKER_03: Uh so now I want to walk you through my journey.
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: And he was, he, I'm not gonna say that he was reaching because he was actually doing it.
- 26:49SPEAKER_03: And he related, and so then he was breaking down, not actually like Hammel, break this down.
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: He was having mental issues because he was like, I never realized now how dependent I am on food.
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: Because then we went to now a calorie deficit to lose the weight.
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: He's like, I'm having withdrawals.
- 27:07SPEAKER_03: Initially, it was hard for him, and then it was so hard to go back off of it.
- 27:11SPEAKER_03: And so then people ragingly related to it.
- 27:15SPEAKER_03: It was like, okay, this guy fell off the wagon on purpose, but still fell off the wagon.
- 27:20SPEAKER_03: Now he's trying to get back on.
- 27:21SPEAKER_03: So then he could all the people come on in and help me get back to this.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: And so it's the same thing of just like you said, somebody that has some depth in their pedigree that it's actually real.
- 27:34SPEAKER_03: It's not just a new account that got created today that added into the 2.6 million videos, and there was a story, and you could relate and it made sense.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: And it was real.
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: So, like, they're not showing the the man or the woman in success on what they claim their private jet that they just rented out for an hour that never took off.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: You know, they're actually showing them, hey, in the trenches, here's what we do.
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: Like, hey, hey, this isn't working today.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: I want to let you know we showed up with this idea and my parts delivery truck didn't show up today.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: All right, so let's take that and let's convert it.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: So now, as a leader, how do you put the right checks and balances, filters, we like to use that word too, in place to make sure that's not creeping in your business?
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: I'll say number one, and this isn't always applicable, but when it is, just get references.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: You know, if you're signing up, now if you're watching a TikTok video and you can't connect with them, it's really hard to get references.
- 28:30SPEAKER_01: But if you're signing up for something or you're paying somebody money, get references.
- 28:35SPEAKER_01: And that's a, I know it sounds like an old thing, but it's so true.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: You know, if you're hiring, especially a higher up person, get references.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: If it's a business system, a payroll company, a this or that, get references.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: You know, and if you can't get references, then let's talk about what some of the other good things are to do.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: When an employee brings it to you, you don't want to squash them.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: We've talked about that.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: But how do you ask the right questions as a leader to make sure, okay, is this relevant?
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: Would this fit our culture?
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: Would it help?
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: Or do I need to help them see where they need to keep digging?
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: But this is maybe not a fit.
- 29:09SPEAKER_02: I'll take this one and run it.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: And I love it because you've helped us grow and adapt in this.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: But on our side, well, I'll go back to the employee because I don't want to overshadow that question you're talking about there.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: But if they bring it to you, you need to put the ball back in their court and say, hey, I need you to give me references.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: I need you to figure X and Y out to make sure it aligns with this.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: And guess what?
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: If they don't bring it back, it's not that important.
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: It's not that important.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: It's no different than you've taught us.
- 29:41SPEAKER_02: Whenever we get jacked up or excited about something, hey, have this lined up for me.
- 29:46SPEAKER_02: So whenever we talk to them, we can go through this.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: And if we don't take the time or the person doesn't provide that to you, it's not worth having.
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: It's not worth having.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: Now, some you can weed through and it's a new story.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: startup company and they're they don't have all the references and backing, okay, that's a one-off scenario.
- 30:06SPEAKER_02: But majority of the time, they're gonna have all of the references and they need to bring them to you if it's if it's gonna be something relevant that is worth you pursuing.
- 30:16SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's good.
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 30:17SPEAKER_01: What are your thoughts on that one?
- 30:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, very much so of just like you got to be careful, like if because if it's always the latest and greatest, the latest and greatest, latest and greatest, you kind of forget what it's all about.
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: You bet.
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: You're always chasing the next thing, the next thing, the next thing.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: So you gotta vet that a little bit.
- 30:35SPEAKER_03: And like Taylor talked about, you know, it's generally how we handle every single idea, but then you're gonna ask them the next level questions.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: They hadn't thought about it because they were just on a sales pitch.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 30:47SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 30:47SPEAKER_03: They were getting pitched, they were getting sold and they didn't have time to come up with all the what ifs or the objections.
- 30:52SPEAKER_03: So you get to help them like, hey, here's what you need to go back and ask that company or that person, how did they handle this situation?
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: What do you do when your inventory feed goes back to them, also comes back to CDK?
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: CDK rewrites and it goes back to V Auto and then it goes over to Home Net.
- 31:07SPEAKER_03: Then it goes to Auto Trader.
- 31:08SPEAKER_03: How do they have a protection filter that it doesn't just keep round robbing and backing around and they're like, hmm, didn't think about that.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: It's like, okay, well let's verify that.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: And what do we do if it's under five photos and what do we do if it's over 40 photos, but auto trader only take 26 photos.
- 31:23SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 31:23SPEAKER_03: But you need nine photos for it to auto populate over here.
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: Like didn't think about that.
- 31:28SPEAKER_03: So you can help them a little bit without belittling or saying why didn't you think about that, you fool?
- 31:33SPEAKER_03: Like why'd you bring me this?
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: It's like, oh no, there's some questions that I thought about while you were talking let's get back with them and ask them these.
- 31:41SPEAKER_01: And I think I think both of those pieces are great advice and and it's easier done when you're paying for a service.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: So now I'm gonna flip it on when somebody heard a a marketing idea or a sales script or this or that and they can't get in contact with the person.
- 31:57SPEAKER_01: You know, so one of the things that I'll do when I'm sitting down having a conversation with an employee is I'll let them go through that, you know, and tell them hey I'm ex that sounds great.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to hear about that.
- 32:08SPEAKER_01: Let's unpack that.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: You know, one I want to thank them for taking their time and really their courage to come into my office and say that.
- 32:15SPEAKER_01: You know, we cannot forget that.
- 32:17SPEAKER_01: You know, we think it's easy.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: It's easy for us to walk in each other's office, but that employee it's not easy for them.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: And it might not be this idea that's a game changer.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: It could be five down the road so you don't want to squash that.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: And then we'll unpack it.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: And I'll say okay what how do you see if you put this idea in place what are you looking for it to accomplish?
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: Like what's the end goal?
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: Like what's the end goal?
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: And they're like uh I don't know.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: So like you help them unpack it.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: Okay, what do you think if we put this in place, what would it do?
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: What would it improve?
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: How would it enhance?
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: What are we trying to accomplish?
- 32:50SPEAKER_01: And is there something we would remove to put this in place?
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: And I I really like talking about this on word tracks on sales word tracks out there, because there's people you got to have energy and you got to have hype for people to be engaged online.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: Like you just do.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: You just do there's so much competition.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: But then I'll ask them almost like okay let's unpack that because let's be honest regional wise in the US people talk to people differently.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: And I don't know about you guys, but when you're around somebody that's from like the Northeast like New York Boston the Bronx or whatever that is they're rough they come off.
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean and like they'll start MFing you and this and that and it's just a normal conversation.
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah it doesn't mean what you think it means.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah if you're in the the South like you start taking offense to that.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah so then I'll ask somebody I'm like okay what you heard from that guy in California talking about would you say that to your mom if you're selling her a car?
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: Would you say that to your best customer?
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: And they're like no well okay but there might still be good content in there.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: Let's rewrite it.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: Let's let's just change a couple of those words and let's rewrite it.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: So you try to figure out the end goal of like hey this is helping to overcome an objection or this is helping to get our social platforms out there better or whatever else it may be.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: And then you unpack it and adapt it and maybe change it to fit your culture you know for your success.
- 34:12SPEAKER_03: So I I guess the the point there too and I think we all agree on this is we never take anything without vetting it and just say put it in place let's go but I I need to park there and say that you're you're kind of uh on your own with that because majority people out there do do that.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: It's funny we have some people in our 20 group that they'll come like hey do you guys know this process I was like well it was a new one that came out and we signed up for it.
- 34:42SPEAKER_03: We saw another one at the same dealer and they were just a couple weeks ago they were like hey if you guys signed up with so on so I was like mm mm I was like what do they do?
- 34:50SPEAKER_03: It's like I don't really know but they said they'd get us more leads and help us buy more cars like did you verify them?
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: And they're like mmm it's like okay well let me know how it works out.
- 35:00SPEAKER_03: There's a lot of people you know we say that and it sounds easy like don't just sign up for everything because then the main thing's not the main thing but there's a lot of people that do that feel like it's gonna fix their issue.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: And if you'll remember that nothing's free like just like nothing's free.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: Okay?
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: And just you just run it through that filter.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: And go, hey, let me pause, let me play the other side of it.
- 35:24SPEAKER_01: Let me not shut it out because it could be something good.
- 35:26SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: So it's easy to go to the other side though.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: And then you become the grumpy old man that doesn't listen to anybody and nobody'll ever come into your office anymore.
- 35:35SPEAKER_03: And that's funny because we have we constantly call each other out at different stages of that.
- 35:40SPEAKER_03: It's like hey listen frumpy like pull it together son I was like you sound grumpy you know we point out hey you sound like this uncle you sound like this grandpa is like whoopsie yep it's like thank you for checking me like give me a second I'm gonna reset it's like okay let's leave let's take a look at it like I think that's stupid but let's look at it.
- 36:01SPEAKER_03: Maybe there's something good maybe there's a piece of it.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: Maybe the whole thing's not a fit but what if we took a piece of it yep so I I just and this is kind of easy for us to talk about because we we have developed I'm not gonna say we naturally do it.
- 36:15SPEAKER_01: We've developed the habits and the filters and the processes that that we do really good about it.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: Probably sometimes we don't act fast enough but I'm just saying if you'll just pause like it don't just put everything in place and be like I just let him try it if it blows up it blows up.
- 36:33SPEAKER_03: That's what your employees are saying.
- 36:34SPEAKER_03: You know what I mean?
- 36:35SPEAKER_03: They're saying I just came back from this oh I just signed up for that give it 30 days he'll scrap it.
- 36:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah like and I think that falls right into hearing I'm gonna let you take back over following too many best practices can turn into the worst practice of all confusion and I'm gonna add to that employees not trusting what you said is actually going to be there long term.
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah you know like your word is your word and so if you're constantly taking someone else's words and making them your own hey this is where we're going this is what we're doing we're gonna try this we're gonna do that because they are your workers at whatever level they're gonna do it.
- 37:18SPEAKER_03: Now are they gonna do it to their best ability?
- 37:20SPEAKER_03: Absolutely not especially if this is the eighth time you've cried for Wolf.
- 37:25SPEAKER_03: Kid I'm sorry you're gonna have to figure it out I've come and checked on you eight times now.
- 37:30SPEAKER_03: Well my leg's actually broken this time sorry but you know so then your team like it's no longer that big of a deal or that best of a practice because you shot all your bullets and now they're just like yeah what if you got no credibility.
- 37:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah your credibility your word has gone out the window yep so you got to be careful there that you find that happy medium and then you we've talked about it without fully breaking this down then you make your idea their idea and so then it gets delivered a little differently if I'm like hey what do you guys think about this I've gone through this system it here's the 12 benefits here's three ways that I think might be downfalls.
- 38:08SPEAKER_03: What's your guys' thoughts?
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: So we do it between the three of us and they're like hey let's have the service managers look at this let's have the office look at this and like I kind of like that I kind of like that and maybe you get a subpar company to help bring some advice as well and they're like all right let's go then that helps that idea really grow legs that's good that's good absolutely hey diving into Mythbuster time this is uh the more advice you take in the smarter you become I laughed about it because it's like oh you have a lot of we've been talking about this the whole time it's busted I'm not even going to let me talk no I'm not gonna let me guess going this is the only game show I'd do good on it it's a so many people get hung in that of just like and you will overload yourself.
- 38:57SPEAKER_03: Well it's like the multitasking like hey you good at multitasking like you see a trucker's dashboard sometimes and they got like 14 monitors going like yeah you can see a lot but you can't properly monitor that.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: And I think we learned that with people you know where it felt good to say well I got 15 people under me or I got 30 people I manage.
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah you're doing a poor job at it.
- 39:19SPEAKER_01: You know you can only do four to eight max.
- 39:22SPEAKER_03: Well that in our in our manager meeting on PACE it was like hey we have all of our KPIs you go over every single day.
- 39:29SPEAKER_03: And some of them kind of cross-reference each other.
- 39:32SPEAKER_03: And so it was like hey outbound activities yesterday was 289 and we got over here it was like hey how many one-on-ones did we do?
- 39:38SPEAKER_03: And how many green light checkouts saying they performed their job to the best of the building and so it was 11 out of 11.
- 39:44SPEAKER_03: And I was like hey real systems check what says I'm a green lighter good job of outbound activities he said well it's 50.
- 39:51SPEAKER_03: I said okay and you had how many salespeople yesterday he said 11.
- 39:54SPEAKER_03: I said okay so how many activities would that equate it to?
- 39:57SPEAKER_03: And he said a random number I said no it's 550.
- 40:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah and I said so over here is this number correct the 289 he's like yeah I was like so how did they get green light checkouts if they didn't do that?
- 40:09SPEAKER_03: He's like hmm so it's not about the people that you have under your checking all the boxes because then you'll just be checking the boxes with no results.
- 40:17SPEAKER_02: Really didn't accomplish checks quite that's right so I'm gonna yes it's busted.
- 40:22SPEAKER_02: So the more vice you take in the harder it becomes to hear your own voice.
- 40:25SPEAKER_02: Great leaders filter they don't absorb the word filter filter I didn't even type that in there.
- 40:30SPEAKER_03: Nope filter's good filter is good to have all right how do you find your own signal your signal where you're getting your information what drum beat you're going to beat to you know what I mean like so talk about think about that the best leaders develop an internal filter we've kind of broke that down which aligns with their values their people and their goals the the first thing I'm gonna say here where I get recommendations for a podcast a book a a you know seminar to go to any any self-improvement stuff is when somebody recommends it to me.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: So you send me over a podcast to listen to somebody our 20 group sends me Taylor says you should look at this somebody else in my circle says hey you should read this book you should do this or that those are credible points that then I I take those.
- 41:27SPEAKER_01: Like I don't even have to research the podcast I'm hidden play.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: Because those are trusted sources that I value and I respect that I know is not going to recommend something to me that they haven't vetted and they don't think that would help improve my situation.
- 41:43SPEAKER_01: So if you get a recommendation for some from somebody run with it and listen to it.
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: Because something in there is good.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: Now on the other side on the other side and you know we just we we talked about this all the time but we went through construction I didn't really know that much about construction.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: No I mean we're we're pretty solid like savvy redneck street smart people okay but I had to start researching top podcasts for commercial construction.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: And I had to go through multiples of those until I found one that related one that I could understand.
- 42:17SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: And then two had to do there.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: So you know at a broad spectrum if you can't get it from somebody locally or your circle of influence you might have to sift through a bunch of them until you find something that relates that you can verify.
- 42:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah and another thing that we learned just in adapting in your current situation as as we interviewed our general contractors and as we interviewed SUPs and as we started looking at places, we didn't never wasted an opportunity to learn something.
- 42:47SPEAKER_03: Something like when we're hiring four sales managers we thought that wasn't worthwhile but before we wasted another not worthwhile we said what can be and so we started extracting data and then we use that as a question on the next person.
- 43:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah it was like hey what's your GCI and and how much is this operational cost?
- 43:07SPEAKER_03: And you know what's your max over here and what are you figuring over this and what's your cap cost and we started and they were like you know the first guy just got average eddies like some hillbilly's about to just spend a lot of money.
- 43:18SPEAKER_03: The second guy was like oh okay we're gonna have to go a little bit deeper.
- 43:22SPEAKER_03: By the time we got to the fourth or fifth or sixth they were like these people have their game put together right because we did not waste any opportunity to learn and grow.
- 43:32SPEAKER_03: It was never stop raising your hand and saying no one's training me.
- 43:36SPEAKER_03: That is your own dang fault you fool.
- 43:38SPEAKER_03: There's so much information out there if you have not stopped to say what can I learn from this and then really put it into your play your game plan how do you work with it still holding your vision that's on you.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: I I I love that you bring up that point and I'm gonna unpack that rapidly but just so everybody understands every single situation or conversation has some type of nugget in there where you can learn.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: Okay, in business when you're highly successful there is some key points in there that you need to pause and figure out what you could learn from that needs to be duplicated.
- 44:22SPEAKER_01: When something goes wrong and it fails there's something you can learn from to not allow it to fail again.
- 44:29SPEAKER_01: When you're interviewing somebody and this is a this is a trade secret but let's let them know when you're interviewing somebody even if you're not going to hire them but guess what they're probably working for your competitor it's a great time for you to ask questions to learn some of the inside information from your competitor down the road every single situation has the opportunity to learn something.
- 44:54SPEAKER_01: And if you go in with that mindset you'll come away dangerous.
- 45:00SPEAKER_02: That's strong.
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: And it won't be by one event it'll be by a correlation of a hundred put together yeah most certainly so we talked about it but advice is most useful when it reinforces your vision not replaces it.
- 45:13SPEAKER_03: No right it reinforces your vision your goals your North Star advice helps you s tune up and move a little over here a little over there a little over here.
- 45:23SPEAKER_03: Hey someone else is doing it this way this is more efficient hey there's a system that does this this helps you out hey you need to hire this person to completely give you your time back right but you still have your vision and your goal what you're trying to do.
- 45:35SPEAKER_01: Hey on that I I got to give a piece of advice here and we we naturally do this but that this is so important.
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: There are so many leaders out there that'll see a great video they'll get a meeting together and they'll hit play on the video you know as this idea and hoping that their team absorbs that and puts it in place.
- 45:56SPEAKER_01: However if you'll take what you just said about the most when it becomes your vision.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: So when I see something or you guys see something on a video we'll go to a meeting and we'll talk about that and unpack it and then weave it into our culture and our process.
- 46:13SPEAKER_03: Then maybe a week or two later we may then play the video to reinforce what we introduced as our vision it's it's no different than I learned in college speech class, which I uh for whatever reason loved uh but it was in a proper speech was you're gonna tell them what you're gonna tell them.
- 46:34SPEAKER_03: All right guys I brought you here's what we're gonna go over.
- 46:36SPEAKER_03: Here's the game plan.
- 46:38SPEAKER_03: Then you tell them you show them the video and then you're gonna recap the videos like hey so here's my three key takeaways there's a sheet of paper and a pen in front of you write down these three key takeaways and then there's two blank spots to write down your thoughts and so then you help them really do something with it.
- 46:56SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 46:56SPEAKER_03: Because if you simply emailed them the video and didn't say anything or just brought them in a room and said this, then are you trying to change their North Star?
- 47:05SPEAKER_03: Are you trying to make it successful do you follow up?
- 47:07SPEAKER_03: Do you follow through with that it's it's so easy but so many people don't oh so many people do not deliver that correctly.
- 47:15SPEAKER_02: You've talked about this so much of going through which I love people listen to this are like I don't have the people around me.
- 47:22SPEAKER_02: I can't do that.
- 47:22SPEAKER_02: I don't have people that I can that can pour into me or anything else.
- 47:26SPEAKER_02: Will you reshare some of your top people that are influences to you you've never met in person.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: No and I think that changes throughout your life is you know when I first got into business the closest five people around me those were people I knew yeah those were people I interacted with and then it goes on and then a couple of the people were you know and then now you look at and the majority of the people that I learned from and I listen to and this and that, they don't have a clue who I am.
- 47:56SPEAKER_01: They're not my phone.
- 47:57SPEAKER_01: If I send them a direct message they probably are not going to answer.
- 48:00SPEAKER_01: Maybe maybe they'll have AI I mean I don't know but I'm just saying like you don't have to know you know you just have to find the information and listen to it run it through the correct filters and then everybody has trusted sources within their organization then you bounce that idea off of them.
- 48:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah what what's your take on this?
- 48:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah and then and then even it's the same thing this I'm now I'm laughing.
- 48:24SPEAKER_01: It's the same thing we'll talk about an idea in here no different than before this you were telling you know Cracker marketing director some ideas.
- 48:32SPEAKER_01: You were telling him about it first with the vision then you were going to send him the podcast.
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 48:37SPEAKER_01: So it wasn't the podcast and the vision after.
- 48:41SPEAKER_03: Because they'll hear it differently.
- 48:42SPEAKER_03: They will right if you can give direction of hey here's what I got from this yeah then they're gonna start with their ears and their eyes like okay here's what I'm looking for.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: Right when we were in the sale in the sales manager meeting stuff and we were talking about going over KPIs and how are we going to scale and how do we remove pain points on buying and this and that.
- 49:03SPEAKER_01: So we talked about that then I told them the podcast was coming.
- 49:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:07SPEAKER_01: Then we listened to the podcast then we unpacked it again to drive it home.
- 49:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah very much so all right so think of this it's better it is always better to master a few proven principles than chase every single one like think about that.
- 49:24SPEAKER_03: It is better you know it's uh the the theory it's better uh to be uh instead of a jack of all trays yeah so yeah and and yeah and that's about the quote because you you know you could be a doer of all and a master of none.
- 49:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah and you know that feels good like hey I know how to do plumbing I know how to do electrical I know how to do roofing and this and that but you're really not a master of your craft of any of them.
- 49:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 49:47SPEAKER_01: So you're better off to hone in and that's difficult for me to do too you know what I mean is is to hone in and say hey let me be a master of this.
- 49:56SPEAKER_01: And I and I think we we we joke about this a little bit but you know you really like take your energy and you put it in in one segment and ours is leading business you know in our organization.
- 50:08SPEAKER_01: So could I manage my investments in 401?
- 50:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah I could I could um but I know I would have screens everywhere and I would be all in and I still wouldn't be a master of it.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: And not only am I not then a master of managing my investments it actually took time away from what I am a master of.
- 50:31SPEAKER_01: So not only did I not do it as good as somebody that's been in the industry of investing for 30 years and has the degree, I'm actually stealing time from what I'm the best at.
- 50:43SPEAKER_02: You talked about that I'd die laughing.
- 50:46SPEAKER_02: You had said Taylor you're gonna set it up and do it here I said great sounds good.
- 50:49SPEAKER_02: Rev her up as hard as you can just rev it farther.
- 50:52SPEAKER_02: Well we have a guy that is so analytical and he thinks he's gonna beat the system he's got it the other day in investment suite compared to a 401 guess what mine was performing better and his was high.
- 51:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah and he thought he was like ah walking by is good he's like oh it's 12% return I said mine's 18% return over and he said well how what do you manage I said I ain't managing anything I put it to the masters to the people that are in the craft that have the time to do it.
- 51:21SPEAKER_03: Now that doesn't mean you don't check on it or anything else and make sure hey the door's open and nothing's working here but more times than not yeah that that that's so good like because people like hey tell me about your side gig tell me about your side business and I'm like my head is buried deep in my in in the current business which we have a decently high skill level being able to make it X factor hard.
- 51:50SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 51:51SPEAKER_03: And so it's like just like you said you'd have all the screens like why don't you open a t-shirt print business?
- 51:56SPEAKER_03: Why don't you have a delivery service business?
- 51:58SPEAKER_03: Why don't you have an uh install Christmas lights business or this this now our vision is okay let's just uh have our kids create that business right why they're not having to do this other podcast right but anytime I I now have that filter to set up say will that take away from my work time or my home time and if the answer is if it's not a set it and forget it, I can't devote that to it because the time that I would waste some different than the other day I had a whole business review that I generated via AI.
- 52:28SPEAKER_03: I took an hour of my time to coach and talk through this thing and it created a 22 page like and I was showing it to the board and they were like this is solid where is this from and I was just like oh I spent some time on the internet working on this and this and they're like that's really good.
- 52:45SPEAKER_03: And I was like look my forte is not in spreadsheets and and and I can I can do it with some of them right but I was like this would take so much time so much of my brain power I was like my brain is much better spent it's like somebody was talking about DoorDash the other day and they're like man the fees are high.
- 53:04SPEAKER_03: I was like what's your time worth?
- 53:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah you know I'm not doing that every single day.
- 53:07SPEAKER_03: No but like if you're buried and you've got this many, this many this many this many and you didn't bring your launch it's like okay well what's your time bringing you right now in value and if you get out of that flow state of mind you talked about how hard it is to get back into it or you could just hit the button and have somebody deliver and it's a convenience and you just keep rolling.
- 53:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: So I I think I I gotta add one point to that because all that's so good.
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: But for y'all out there that that say and pay for the convenience of whether it's a delivery service or this or that but then sit on your phone watching TikTok videos not a business improvement.
- 53:45SPEAKER_01: What are you doing?
- 53:46SPEAKER_01: It's not tough.
- 53:47SPEAKER_01: Like you're trying to buy back your time so then you can invest your time what you're the best at.
- 53:52SPEAKER_01: But you didn't but you didn't yes so then that's a double then then you wasted your time and you spent more money.
- 53:59SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 53:59SPEAKER_01: You got a negative return.
- 54:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah not good.
- 54:02SPEAKER_03: I should have throw that in there just make sure handling that.
- 54:05SPEAKER_03: Uh so super solid there just understanding what's a piece of advice that's good that helps you lead you know something that you're always focusing on and making sure it's your own signal.
- 54:17SPEAKER_02: I had to look this up the status saw this the other day and it was so good somebody put in and uh the story of a lady and this they're illustrating of putting into there but of how you use your minutes in a day.
- 54:29SPEAKER_02: And a lady went into a bank and deposited$1440 in her account.
- 54:34SPEAKER_02: Well she went on throughout her day and worked and then went to the uh store the next day to spend money and she said uh said their card got declined and they said why she said I just deposited money and she went back to the bank and the bank said hey I'm sorry funds don't roll over this isn't real but it's yeah connect over says that uh says that whenever you don't uh use any of the money in the account it expires at the end of the day well it relates back to 1440 that's how many minutes are in the day and if you're not using that talking about your time it's gone you can never get it back.
- 55:12SPEAKER_02: So whenever you 10x 1x 2x whatever it is use that convenience and realize that 1440 minutes a day if you're not using it it is gone and you can never get it back.
- 55:25SPEAKER_03: That that's it that's yeah if you're constantly working on I can't I can't this isn't working I can't figure it out you're just blowing your time it it it blows my mind and you don't want me to hold you accountable at that fashion you don't want to sit down and tell me you don't have time because I'm gonna show you how I've figured out how to and it's not always I've told you guys before I'm either an all in or I'm completely done right and I've had days where I'm completely done and then I'll have a day like Sunday where we just we played 84 different sports.
- 55:58SPEAKER_03: You were uploading things at eight o'clock at night and I'm like are they playing starting another game I'm just like oh my gosh and so then I'm like hey missed you at the gym this morning they're like uh yeah I I can't find the time I'm like what were you doing?
- 56:15SPEAKER_03: Like did you plant a garden and you know but you got to tell your time what to do.
- 56:19SPEAKER_01: That's most important man.
- 56:20SPEAKER_01: You got to tell what to do.
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: Okay, all right let's wrap this up so I got a question for both of y'all um think about this.
- 56:26SPEAKER_01: How do you personally how do you personally decide when advice is worth listening to or when to tune it out yeah so I'll go first.
- 56:39SPEAKER_03: Um the advice is it getting me somewhere where I want to go is it taking me somewhere I haven't been right so if it's a podcast or something I might do some quick research on it before I because I'm like hey I only have X amount of time and I'll quickly skip to another one of like it's not the person speaking weird or like I'm not connecting to this.
- 57:00SPEAKER_03: So I'm quickly going to say is this something that I want to absorb and is it taking me a direction that I want to go?
- 57:06SPEAKER_03: Or is this trying to change my whole philosophy and I'm not trying to hear all that right now because it's going to waste my time.
- 57:14SPEAKER_03: And then how to tune it out you just tune it out turn it off remove yourself.
- 57:19SPEAKER_03: You know more often than not I'm really good at just like whoop shape shifting over here and then whoop I'm not gonna say oh what what's that uh Irish uh Irish goodbye Irish goodbyes.
- 57:29SPEAKER_03: You just leave like I am not gonna say hey I'm leaving hey I'm leaving because I know that's gonna take another 15 to 20 minutes.
- 57:35SPEAKER_03: And somebody's gonna be like why are you Yeah call me rude call me weird I don't care I I don't care.
- 57:40SPEAKER_03: I'm just going so I can quickly remove myself from that situation and I can tune it out.
- 57:45SPEAKER_03: So if change it turn it off whatever.
- 57:47SPEAKER_01: And but there are you know there are situations where if you're in an in-person yeah okay uh like this next week we've got an event coming up that will engage with some people enough where they know that we're engaged but not too much where it takes up all the time.
- 58:02SPEAKER_03: It becomes an elevator move it becomes an elevator speech and then you know your exit right and you know if whoa I hooked up to something good.
- 58:12SPEAKER_03: I need to spend some time here.
- 58:13SPEAKER_03: I need to get a connection with this person it's something I align with or a good connection let's forget the elevator speech and let's go a little more in depth.
- 58:21SPEAKER_03: Ask a question listen and absorb ask another question listen and absorb and so you're they'd be like man that guy was really good at listening.
- 58:29SPEAKER_03: That guy asked really good questions.
- 58:31SPEAKER_01: You know what's different there than most people is most people and we've unpacked this before most people listen to start speaking you know when we're listening we're running it through the filters figuring out is this a conversation is this a person that I can extract more information from.
- 58:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah it's how do you personally decide whether advice is worth listening to and when to tune it out.
- 58:56SPEAKER_03: So I'm not gonna be like hey this is a waste of time I'm gonna go to the bar to get something to drink.
- 58:59SPEAKER_03: I know I don't drink but this is uh an awful conversation I'm like oh hey that's Bob Smith over there it's good to see it's such a pleasure to meet you yeah we'll see you guys around hey come by for a tour and let me wash your car for free right I'm not gonna Irish exit that yeah um but if I realize hey we're really getting deep in this conversation this person's gonna tell me about how they tried to buy a car in 1974 and it didn't go good yeah I can't change that.
- 59:22SPEAKER_02: That's right right what's your take on that I'll probably take it on the the employee side whenever I get any ideas because I always love being in there.
- 59:29SPEAKER_02: I have two quick really good questions of going through this of why and what for like so they'll come and be like hey Taylor I think this is a great idea I said okay great what for and a lot of times I'll see that they move on or they'll be like hey Taylor I think we need to do this I'll say okay why do you think that and it's instead of just me completely just tuning them out and not saying anything I'm okay what for?
- 59:56SPEAKER_02: Okay why do you think that and I'm serious I bet it's nine times out of ten.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_02: They're like, I just think it'd be a good idea.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_02: And then they walk off.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_02: I'm like, okay, not credit.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_03: They're just talking to try to feel special.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_03: They're uploading stuff just to try to find value in that.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_02: It's like I listen, you I heard you didn't validate anything.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_02: Okay, let's move on.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_03: Let's move on.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_02: So uh that's two things that I really go into of and I'm still gonna listen.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go through this, but yeah.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_01: Those those are great tips right there.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_01: And what a great episode here about you know, just calming the noise down and all the information that's out there.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_01: What I don't want you to do, listeners, is shut it all out because there's there's golden nuggets in everything.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_01: You just gotta be able to have the filters in place, figure out how does it fit your culture, figure out how does it fit your processes to elevate it up to a new level.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_01: And if it doesn't align with that, then it's not for you.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_01: Move on.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_01: Don't even waste any time talking about how bad it was.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_01: Move on looking for something that helps elevate you and helps elevate your business.
