- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Genesis 21.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Finally, a baby for Sarah.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: The Lord came back to visit Sarah as he said he would, and he kept his promise to her.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: At exactly the time God said it would happen, Sarah became pregnant and gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Abraham named his son Isaac.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Abraham did what God commanded and circumcised Isaac when he was eight days old.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: Sarah said, God has made me happy, and everyone who hears about this will be happy with me.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: No one thought that I, Sarah, would be able to have Abraham's child, but I have given Abraham a son, even though he is old.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: Trouble at home.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Isaac continued to grow, and soon he was old enough to begin eating solid food.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: So Abraham gave a big party.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Sarah saw Hagar's son playing.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Hagar was the Egyptian slave woman who gave birth to Abraham's first son.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Sarah said to Abraham, get rid of that slave woman and her son, send them away.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: When we die our son Isaac will get everything that we have.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: I don't want that slave woman's son sharing these things with my son Isaac.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: This upset Abraham very much.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: He was worried about his son Ishmael.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: But God said to Abraham, Don't worry about the boy and the slave woman.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Do what Sarah wants.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: Your descendants will be those who come from Isaac, but I will also bless the son of your slave woman.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: He is your son, so I will make a great nation from his family also.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Early the next morning Abraham took some food and water and gave them to Hagar.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: She carried them and left with her boy.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: She left that place and wandered in the desert of Beersheba.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: After some time, when all of their drinking water was gone, Hagar put her son under a bush.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Then she walked a short distance away and sat down.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: She thought her son would die because there was no water and she did not want to watch him die.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: She sat there and began to cry.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: God heard the boy crying and God's angel called to Hagar from heaven.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: He said, What is wrong, Hagar?
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Don't be afraid.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: God heard the boy crying there.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Go help the boy.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Hold his hand and lead him.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: I will make him the father of many people.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Then God allowed Hagar to see a well of water.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: So she went to the well and filled her bag with water.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Then she gave water to the boy to drink.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: God continued with the boy until he grew up.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Ishmael lived in the desert and became a hunter.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: He learned to shoot a bow very well.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: His mother found a wife for him in Egypt.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: They continued to live in the Peron desert.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Abraham's bargain with Abimelech.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Then Abimelech and Fekul spoke with Abraham.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Fakal was the commander of Abimelech's army.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Then they said to Abraham, God is with you in everything that you do, so make a promise to me here before God.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Promise that you will be fair with me and with my children.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Promise that you will be kind to me in this country where you have lived.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Promise that you will be as kind to me as I have been to you.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: And Abraham said, I promise to treat you the same way you have treated me.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Then Abraham complained to Abimelech because Abimelech's servants had captured a well of water.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: But Abimelech said, I don't know who did this.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: You never told me about this before today.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: So Abraham and Abimelech made an agreement.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Abraham gave Abimelech some sheep and cattle as proof of the agreement.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: Abraham also put seven female lambs in front of Abimelech.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Abimelech asked Abraham, Why did you put these seven female lambs by themselves?
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Abraham answered, When you accept these lambs from me, it will be proof that I dug this well.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: So after that the well was called Beersheba.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Abraham gave the well this name because it was the place where they made a promise to each other.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: So Abraham and Abimelech made an agreement at Beersheba.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Then Abimelech and Thakal, his military commander, went back to the country of the Philistines.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Abraham planted a special tree at Beersheba and prayed to the Lord, the God who lives forever.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: And Abraham lived as a stranger for a long time in the country of the Philistines.
