- 0:01Dallin is out.
- 0:03Saxon is in.
- 0:04And we're talking about people who have
- 0:06chips on their shoulder again today.
- 0:09Let's do it now.
- 0:22I love the chase and the hunt and
- 0:23I set the pace when I'm running.
- 0:25I always take what I want and I
- 0:27always give it one hundred.
- 0:28Don't need a bank, no I'm funded.
- 0:29Play the game like it's nothing.
- 0:31I'm always thankful for something.
- 0:32Don't take for granted, stay humble.
- 0:34Now wake up!
- 0:35It's time to look at the enemy.
- 0:38Look in the mirror if he is no
- 0:39friend to me.
- 0:41What is going on everybody?
- 0:43It is lunchtime.
- 0:47Time to get a break from that work
- 0:48day, hang out with some friends,
- 0:50talk about sports, entertainment,
- 0:52and specifically CrossFit.
- 0:54What's going on?
- 0:56We got Jake in the house, Vicky, Meredith,
- 0:59Trent Olive, Jay Birch, Craig Pasley,
- 1:03Joseph Ramirez.
- 1:07I really wish we could get that just
- 1:09to say their names again.
- 1:12What's that?
- 1:14I'm not, I'm not down.
- 1:15Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:16I hope, I hope YouTube's listening.
- 1:22How big is Corey's what?
- 1:24No chip.
- 1:26definitely chip Andrew Sten with the jokes
- 1:30already so I'm listening to Savan this
- 1:34morning this is not even close to the
- 1:36rails this morning he starts talking about
- 1:41Jeremy and looking like the guy from
- 1:44digital underground
- 1:47Shock G. Now in my head is...
- 1:53And that's all I can do.
- 1:54That's all I can think of.
- 1:56To be fair, that's a fantastic song.
- 1:59It is.
- 2:00It still holds up today.
- 2:02And that song is... Old.
- 2:06The video, maybe not.
- 2:10I mean,
- 2:10Shock G's running around with a fake nose
- 2:12and glasses on.
- 2:13The song is still a banger.
- 2:15They just doing the Humpty Dance.
- 2:17Getting busy in the Burger King bathroom,
- 2:19man.
- 2:19It's fantastic.
- 2:27Good stuff.
- 2:29He looks like Send Dog from Cypress Hill.
- 2:35I've been sending about Jeremy forever.
- 2:38All right.
- 2:43he does it not look like send all
- 2:45from Cypress Hill.
- 2:46I will get, I, I agree with, uh,
- 2:48with Joseph on that one.
- 2:49So I think he's,
- 2:52I also see shock day with the nose,
- 2:55with the fake nose.
- 2:59Uh, Jacqueline,
- 3:00haven't seen her in the live chat in
- 3:02a while.
- 3:02Good to see you.
- 3:04Hopefully that means you got a day off
- 3:05or something.
- 3:09Um,
- 3:10I got to meet her at the Fort
- 3:14worth games for the first time ever.
- 3:16I think.
- 3:16Oh, cool.
- 3:19Yeah.
- 3:22She's at work slacking.
- 3:25That's my life.
- 3:27So let's hit the big news first and
- 3:30then we'll,
- 3:30we'll dive into like our other stuff.
- 3:33But last night it was announced for
- 3:39alan pepper on his instagram uh spin broke
- 3:43it as well uh that the bike basically
- 3:47i'm going to paraphrase his comments the
- 3:49bike workout at socal where he went to
- 3:53the wall um gave him rhabdo and he
- 3:57is still suffering the effects of that and
- 3:59has been advised by his medical team that
- 4:02he should take a break for a
- 4:07if he wants twenty twenty six to be
- 4:10fully recovered.
- 4:13So he is out.
- 4:14Saxon Pancheck is now in as the backfill.
- 4:18So I think we have a couple of
- 4:20interesting storylines here.
- 4:23One, Saxon Pancheck, the defector,
- 4:27the whatever you want to call him,
- 4:29coming back and saying a few to WFP,
- 4:32I'm going back to CrossFit.
- 4:35this can tell his comeback story yeah it's
- 4:38a good place way to start right for
- 4:41dallin here's a guy that is poised to
- 4:44be the next big thing right and how
- 4:50does this affect him and i asked kelly
- 4:52clark this last night when i was taught
- 4:54when we did our little casual conversation
- 4:57How does this affect him mentally going
- 4:59forward?
- 5:00Is he going to be able to push
- 5:02to that limit again when he's fighting for
- 5:05those points at the games?
- 5:11I think he has to.
- 5:12I don't think he has a choice.
- 5:16And not in the fact that I don't
- 5:18think he has a choice,
- 5:18or to say that it's either do that
- 5:23or nothing.
- 5:24I don't think the way he's built,
- 5:26he has a choice.
- 5:28I don't think that the way his mind
- 5:29frame is that he has a choice.
- 5:31That like, okay, yeah, I got Rabdo,
- 5:33had some lingering effects,
- 5:35can't do Rogue, going to get healed up,
- 5:37and then we're just going to go back
- 5:38to doing what we were doing before.
- 5:41I think that added – I don't know
- 5:43if it was his comments or if somebody
- 5:46was saying something about bring back
- 5:47having an offseason.
- 5:49And he has been in a lot of
- 5:50competitions this year.
- 5:53I don't think he got Rabdo –
- 5:56on purpose but it's and or by design
- 5:58I should say but I don't think it
- 6:00was on accident from just the accumulation
- 6:03of stuff that he was doing not necessarily
- 6:06back to back but I mean it's not
- 6:07like he was peeling off training uh or
- 6:11pulling back from training in the in the
- 6:13meantime I don't feel like that was
- 6:14probably a thing right because he wants to
- 6:16stay peak you know peak
- 6:18shape form for every one of these things
- 6:20because he's a competitor and he wants to
- 6:22win he's made that abundantly clear he's
- 6:25got the capability to as well so it
- 6:30sucks i feel horrible for him i've never
- 6:32had it i've heard horrible things about it
- 6:36um you know definitely not a a fun
- 6:38time but maybe just going to give him
- 6:40a little bit of a break
- 6:42ease back on training a little bit to
- 6:44be able to lean back in, you know,
- 6:46get ready in time for the open and
- 6:47kind of make a good run at the
- 6:49games again next year.
- 7:00Oh, okay.
- 7:00Well, we got frozen Scott.
- 7:04This is how we keep Scott fresh.
- 7:05He always gets frozen from time to time.
- 7:07Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun.
- 7:14that real good real good high-speed
- 7:18internet in Scott's basement out there in
- 7:21Columbus and it's just me all right so
- 7:30Yes, Shanna, hopefully not too much.
- 7:33Thanks, Tristan.
- 7:33No pressure.
- 7:35Hopefully not too much muscle damage to
- 7:38recover from.
- 7:39One hundred percent.
- 7:41You're never going to get the full story.
- 7:42Right.
- 7:43That's all they're saying right now that
- 7:44he has had rhabdo lingering effects from
- 7:46it enough to where they're saying do not
- 7:50or would be a bad idea to go
- 7:52ahead and compete at Rogue.
- 7:54And he's listening to his doctor,
- 7:56which is definitely a good thing.
- 7:59He's starting one episode of Stranger
- 8:03Things Today about time season.
- 8:04I dropped you a caught up.
- 8:06Thanks, Jacqueline.
- 8:09Oh, let me go back up and see.
- 8:12Let's see what we got.
- 8:13What we got.
- 8:14That is a packed comp season.
- 8:16Yes.
- 8:17Yes, Jacqueline.
- 8:18I would one hundred percent agree.
- 8:19That is a packed competition season
- 8:22between semifinals online or start back at
- 8:25the open.
- 8:25Right.
- 8:26Open semifinals.
- 8:28Hey, yes.
- 8:32I lost Internet at the house.
- 8:33So.
- 8:34All right.
- 8:35Here we are.
- 8:36That's exciting.
- 8:39I'm a phone.
- 8:41So what I miss.
- 8:43Uh, nothing.
- 8:44Just me rambling on,
- 8:45trying to read a couple of, uh,
- 8:47trying to read a couple of content, uh,
- 8:49comments.
- 8:50Uh, what Bert is saying,
- 8:51I think is probably a good, uh,
- 8:56or valid.
- 8:57I would say saying too many events in
- 8:59the bike was the thing that just kind
- 9:00of tipped him over the event over there.
- 9:02What I was just bringing up was just
- 9:05start all the way back at the,
- 9:06at the beginning of the year.
- 9:07Right.
- 9:08Um, the open, did he do, uh,
- 9:13He did water Palooza last year.
- 9:14Right.
- 9:16Um, I think he did team.
- 9:17Yeah.
- 9:20So even though, so let's go,
- 9:21let's start there.
- 9:22Water Palooza, the open semifinals,
- 9:27the online semifinals,
- 9:29that's how he actually qualified.
- 9:30Right.
- 9:32Then nothing, nothing,
- 9:34nothing for the law, whichever,
- 9:35whichever WFP events he did,
- 9:37which he did two of them.
- 9:39Correct.
- 9:40He did.
- 9:41So that's one, two, three, four.
- 9:44That's at least five different things
- 9:45before you even get to the games.
- 9:48There's the games,
- 9:48which obviously he performed at a high
- 9:50level.
- 9:51And then you get all the way to
- 9:57Waza in California.
- 10:01It's going to add up after a while,
- 10:03or it can add up for a while.
- 10:05I mean, dude, that's a lot.
- 10:08That's a whole lot.
- 10:11Oh, did we lose Scott on the laptop?
- 10:13It is.
- 10:15I'm coming back in on another way.
- 10:17Gotcha.
- 10:19Anyway, that's a whole lot of stuff.
- 10:22So I feel for a man.
- 10:24Oh, all right.
- 10:25Now we got two Scotts and one Corey.
- 10:27There we go.
- 10:28There we go.
- 10:33Aaron,
- 10:33I don't think it was necessarily from the
- 10:35one thing,
- 10:36but they're probably pointing to that
- 10:37because the echo bike, I mean,
- 10:40he tried to rip the handles off of
- 10:41it, right?
- 10:43I mean,
- 10:43if you go back and watch that event
- 10:46by itself,
- 10:48that's probably the thing he went the
- 10:49hardest on.
- 10:52And that's probably what they're just
- 10:53pointing to and saying, hey,
- 10:54this is probably what tipped you over the
- 10:55edge right there.
- 10:59So the interesting part of the
- 11:00conversation,
- 11:00I don't know what you guys have been
- 11:01talking about,
- 11:02and I've missed all the comments because I
- 11:04couldn't see them on the phone,
- 11:06is when I was talking with Kelly last
- 11:08night,
- 11:08she has actually seen more Rabdo in
- 11:11firemen that she trains than in athletes.
- 11:15Because the athletes train to a certain
- 11:17level of...
- 11:19a tolerance right where the firemen aren't
- 11:22trained to for the training of being a
- 11:25fireman or she said they go out and
- 11:27drink the night before then come in got
- 11:35it yes they might come in and then
- 11:37all of a sudden they have to go
- 11:39at full board try to you know save
- 11:41somebody's house save somebody's life uh
- 11:43whatever and then they end up getting
- 11:45wrapped up
- 11:46Yep, yep, yep, yep.
- 11:47I believe I am following what you're
- 11:49putting down there.
- 11:51Oh, let's see.
- 11:52Shanna saying kidney damage can be
- 11:54mitigated with an IV if caught early.
- 11:57Muscle loss can be a problem long-term
- 12:01sometimes.
- 12:02And I'm wondering,
- 12:04I'm hoping that's not the case.
- 12:05I don't, you know,
- 12:06I don't want to say he seemed fine
- 12:09because you can never tell, you know,
- 12:12without actually knowing him being inside
- 12:13of his house,
- 12:15how bad or good or whatever the case
- 12:18may be, it actually is.
- 12:19Hey, we lost him again.
- 12:25Everyone's going to end up being a
- 12:30mountain lion.
- 12:31I don't know.
- 12:34Pepper's going to
- 12:38resign not resign what's the word i'm
- 12:40looking for retire and start making
- 12:42sourdough slinging coffee and uh hawaii
- 12:48anytime soon but it's definitely a
- 12:51possibility uh anyway that's a one hundred
- 12:56percent i feel for the dude i can't
- 12:59imagine
- 13:00Like,
- 13:00I have been lucky in my own time
- 13:04competing to not really have any serious
- 13:06injuries.
- 13:07I had a couple of things that sidelined
- 13:09me for a little bit,
- 13:10but no more than a week at a
- 13:11time.
- 13:12Nothing that I had to withdraw from a
- 13:13competition that I was about to go do.
- 13:15That is for certain.
- 13:17That is for certain.
- 13:24I feel like...
- 13:27So, Aaron,
- 13:28I don't know if it can be mitigated
- 13:29by fueling properly.
- 13:31Hey, all right, back on Scott's phone.
- 13:35I swear to God.
- 13:39So, anyway, you got it all handled?
- 13:43Yeah, I think, I mean,
- 13:48that's pretty much where we're at.
- 13:49I'm just saying, like,
- 13:52I, me personally,
- 13:54I've never had anything serious that has
- 13:56sidelined me for more than like a couple
- 13:58of days at a time.
- 13:59You know, I think a week at most.
- 14:02So I can't imagine somebody like Dallin
- 14:05who is, you know, he's a contender, right?
- 14:09He is one hundred percent a contender to
- 14:10win, not just be on a podium.
- 14:12He's a contender to win the CrossFit
- 14:14Games.
- 14:15Having to slow down, pull back and
- 14:21uh, you know,
- 14:22not knock back some of his training,
- 14:24especially now that, you know,
- 14:25we're basically off season type type stuff
- 14:27where you can do a lot of base
- 14:28building type stuff.
- 14:31Um,
- 14:32because the previous year you just ended
- 14:35up doing too much, you know, and,
- 14:40and I, I,
- 14:43Not gonna mention it,
- 14:44not gonna mention it,
- 14:45but like the people who was always like,
- 14:46oh, we want more competitions,
- 14:48we want more stuff, we want more stuff.
- 14:50You got more stuff, this is what happens.
- 14:53It was bound to happen sooner or later.
- 14:55Maybe not to him necessarily,
- 14:56but it was bound to happen sooner or
- 14:58later.
- 15:01So people are asking me to turn my
- 15:03phone.
- 15:03This is the only way I can see
- 15:05the comments.
- 15:08So you're stuck with it this way.
- 15:11You got Letterboxd, Scott.
- 15:12It's fine.
- 15:12It's not a big deal.
- 15:14The opposite of, anyway.
- 15:17Everybody's got limits.
- 15:20Yep.
- 15:21And I think that's what it shows.
- 15:24My biggest concern is,
- 15:25is he willing to push to that limit
- 15:27in the future?
- 15:28I think he will be.
- 15:32I think if you...
- 15:35from an athlete's perspective, right?
- 15:38From an athlete perspective, um,
- 15:42you can't, if you,
- 15:43if you're going to be fearful going in,
- 15:45you just do not go.
- 15:47Cause you're going to end up, you know,
- 15:49if you make it,
- 15:50you're going to end up fifties or you
- 15:52get up getting cut.
- 15:53Are you going to end up somewhere at
- 15:54the bottom?
- 15:54Because you're going to be scared to see
- 15:56what happens.
- 15:59Shana, our local MD,
- 16:01compartment syndrome can also cause it.
- 16:05So maybe Dallin's leg swelled too much.
- 16:09No idea what that is,
- 16:10but I believe you.
- 16:13She's more of an expert than we are.
- 16:16Oh, gotcha.
- 16:16Gotcha.
- 16:21So I wanted to ask you about,
- 16:24we'll finish the Dallin thing and move on.
- 16:26Yeah.
- 16:28Yesterday we talked about,
- 16:29do you need a chip on your shoulder
- 16:30to be a good athlete?
- 16:32And you have very clearly stated you have
- 16:36a chip, whether you want it or not,
- 16:39it's there and you keep receipts.
- 16:44I got a whole folder on my phone
- 16:46named receipts that I got.
- 16:48screenshots taken from various places,
- 16:52various things,
- 16:53various results and whatnot that I just
- 16:56keep handy to remind myself.
- 16:59Yeah, absolutely.
- 17:04Well, after that conversation, Vicky,
- 17:06who is always in our chat,
- 17:09she does a podcast called Be Limitless.
- 17:13And she sent me some content she created
- 17:16yesterday.
- 17:17And it talked about
- 17:19that positive talk is kind of a false
- 17:22narrative and if i'm saying any of this
- 17:24wrong hopefully she'll correct me um that
- 17:27really the opposite of positive is not
- 17:30negative but it's neutral and really we
- 17:35need to get more into that neutral mindset
- 17:38not necessarily like beating ourselves up
- 17:41but looking at things logically without
- 17:43emotion and um
- 17:47And chips are emotion, right?
- 17:48Like,
- 17:49we are looking at it as this person
- 17:51wrong me and I want to pay them
- 17:53back and I'm going to pay them back
- 17:55by working harder than them and doing
- 17:57everything I can to show them.
- 17:59I can't accomplish this task.
- 18:02And I think, like, in the, the,
- 18:04one thing I would argue is in the
- 18:05right setting that can be, um.
- 18:10That can be very motivating and can work
- 18:13to an advantage.
- 18:15But I think the problem is when you
- 18:17swing emotionally,
- 18:19you swing to the negative and then you're
- 18:21thinking thoughts and you're beating
- 18:23yourself up and you're doing it to a
- 18:25place where it's not productive anymore.
- 18:29And I think she kind of said that
- 18:32way more eloquently than I did.
- 18:37But she kind of talked about that.
- 18:41a lot and then that really you want
- 18:43to kind of get into that neutral attitude
- 18:46where you're just you're looking at things
- 18:49logically as opposed to emotionally so as
- 18:53someone with a chip what are your thoughts
- 18:55on that uh i think that in a
- 18:59perfect world she's one hundred percent
- 19:00right in a perfect world yes absolutely i
- 19:04would love to be able to just and
- 19:07sometimes i can
- 19:08but it's not often.
- 19:10So I also will say that in addition
- 19:13to my folder of my receipts, right,
- 19:19where people have told me stuff and I'm
- 19:22like,
- 19:23I just kind of shake my head at
- 19:24it, you know, like, oh,
- 19:30and if we both make it into this
- 19:31division,
- 19:32we're gonna get our asses kicked.
- 19:34No, you might get your ass kicked.
- 19:36I'm not.
- 19:38Because I know what kind of work I've
- 19:39been doing.
- 19:40I know what kind of, you know,
- 19:42what kind of sacrifices I've been putting
- 19:44in.
- 19:45I know what I'm capable of at this
- 19:48point.
- 19:49Didn't used to be like that.
- 19:51Did not used to be like that.
- 19:52My first individual competition,
- 19:55individual master's competition,
- 19:58pretty big local comp around here.
- 19:59I had a minor nervous breakdown after the
- 20:01first event because I thought I didn't
- 20:02belong there.
- 20:05I've told you that story for damn sure.
- 20:10And it took a whole lot of work
- 20:13for me to accept the fact that the
- 20:17work I've been doing is actually working.
- 20:22Does that make sense?
- 20:23Like the stuff,
- 20:24the work I've been putting in,
- 20:26it's getting me where I want to go
- 20:28and that I actually do belong in the
- 20:31places that I'm going to now.
- 20:33But I still have those voices and those
- 20:40statements and those whatever you want to
- 20:42call them that are in my brain and
- 20:45in my heart in some places and that
- 20:48are stacked up on my shoulder that are
- 20:50saying, you can't do this.
- 20:52You don't belong here.
- 20:53We don't want you here.
- 20:55Oh, my God.
- 20:55Why is that guy here?
- 20:57Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
- 20:58Some of them are real.
- 21:01some of them are not i'm well aware
- 21:05of that some of those are absolutely one
- 21:07hundred percent made up by my by myself
- 21:10you know you're having your own narrative
- 21:12about what you know there's two people
- 21:15over there talking and one of them over
- 21:17there look in your general direction
- 21:20clearly they must be talking about you so
- 21:23like that kind of just plays on my
- 21:25head in my head on repeat
- 21:27What I have learned to do and what
- 21:29I am still learning to do,
- 21:30what I'm still getting better at is taking
- 21:36that and using it.
- 21:37Does that make sense?
- 21:39Instead of just having these chips and
- 21:41having all this shit that I'm just
- 21:42carrying around with me,
- 21:44now I can take it off and use
- 21:46it as fuel and burn it and put
- 21:52it into effect where
- 21:55yeah it's there but instead of dragging me
- 21:58down i'm going to use it to light
- 21:59a fire to my ass with it so
- 22:03vicky who is was the inspiration for this
- 22:06discussion was uh says but there's no
- 22:09guarantee that the work we put in is
- 22:12going to always play out on the floor
- 22:16not
- 22:17nor can we control what others have done
- 22:21or doing.
- 22:23That is where shifting to neutral plays
- 22:27out.
- 22:28Yeah, a hundred percent.
- 22:30So I think what Vicki's saying is that,
- 22:33or what I'm getting from what she's saying
- 22:37is something I've been also doing a whole
- 22:39lot of is that,
- 22:41or trying to have a whole lot of
- 22:42is not necessarily have the expectations
- 22:44when I step onto the floor.
- 22:46Right?
- 22:47Finally, if I'm in training,
- 22:49that's one thing.
- 22:50Like,
- 22:50I want to get a result from training.
- 22:52Like, I want to do, you know,
- 22:55I'm doing a max set of unbroken ring
- 22:56muscles.
- 22:57Well, I'm aiming for this number.
- 22:58Well, I didn't get to this number.
- 23:00Okay,
- 23:00I can go back and kind of adjust
- 23:01that.
- 23:02Step on the competition floor,
- 23:04you got one shot.
- 23:06One shot, you know,
- 23:09and I've said this a million times,
- 23:10line us up, see what happens.
- 23:12Send us out there.
- 23:13Let's go.
- 23:15At that point,
- 23:17I just have to trust that what I've
- 23:18done has been enough and it doesn't
- 23:21necessarily matter.
- 23:23And it does matter,
- 23:24but it doesn't necessarily matter if I
- 23:25beat everybody else.
- 23:26So long as that,
- 23:27I know that when I give is good
- 23:30enough for me,
- 23:31knowing that I left everything out there
- 23:34every single time.
- 23:37So, so let me, so here's their followup.
- 23:41Yep.
- 23:42And what happens when you don't have it
- 23:44there to use?
- 23:46Did you ever seen the first Avengers
- 23:50movie?
- 23:52When the Hulk said,
- 23:53when they asked the Hulk about or when
- 23:56they were in for the Battle of New
- 23:58York and he said,
- 23:59you're going to have to get angry.
- 24:03And he said,
- 24:03that's my secret is that I'm always angry.
- 24:06It doesn't go away.
- 24:10It hasn't.
- 24:10To this point, it has not gone away.
- 24:12It will not go away.
- 24:14It might quieten, quieten, quieten,
- 24:17quieten, might get quieter,
- 24:21but it does not go away.
- 24:23It hasn't gone away.
- 24:24No matter what,
- 24:25I could win the next four competitions I'm
- 24:29in and it still won't go away.
- 24:34I could make the games this year
- 24:36And it's not going to go away.
- 24:39I could make, I could win, you know,
- 24:41I could next year, you know,
- 24:44when I turned fifty and I'm back with
- 24:49Jesus Christ, we grow up.
- 24:52It still won't go away.
- 24:55Like it's going to be there no matter
- 24:59what.
- 24:59Who hurt you as a child, man?
- 25:02I didn't have many friends.
- 25:06I didn't have many friends.
- 25:07That's a lot of what it is,
- 25:08believe it or not.
- 25:09It is a lot of stuff from when
- 25:12I was growing up that was just me
- 25:15and my mom for the very longest time
- 25:17living in a rural community that was not
- 25:21super prosperous.
- 25:23And it was just me and her.
- 25:24We were broke to begin with.
- 25:25So I didn't have a whole lot of
- 25:26friends.
- 25:28I wasn't a kid that got picked first
- 25:30for anything, right?
- 25:31Unless there was only two of us and
- 25:33one of us was in a wheelchair,
- 25:34then yeah, I would get picked first.
- 25:37So that's what a lot of it is.
- 25:39And it's still there, right?
- 25:42Shanna, CrossFit Games champ,
- 25:47I go into an event wondering how well
- 25:49I can do with curiosity more than
- 25:51anything.
- 25:53Shanna, I am getting better at that.
- 25:58at having that mindset of the, well,
- 26:01let's see what's going to happen, right?
- 26:04I told you this, Scott,
- 26:05especially whenever we were at MSC
- 26:07together, is that no expectations.
- 26:10Like, let's see what happens.
- 26:12I'm going to run my race and see
- 26:14what happens.
- 26:15And when I'm loose like that,
- 26:17I'm able to be loose like that,
- 26:19at that point anyway,
- 26:20I would perform a whole lot better.
- 26:23What I did...
- 26:27learned here recently.
- 26:29Oh, yeah, going back.
- 26:30So I got my folder for all my
- 26:36receipts.
- 26:36I also have a long list of every
- 26:38competition that I go to is that when
- 26:41I get done with it and one of
- 26:44my who I would consider to be my
- 26:47mindset coach made me start doing is write
- 26:50down everything that went wrong and
- 26:52everything that went right.
- 26:55we go back and we look over okay
- 26:56what was i good at what was i
- 26:57not good at what was i good at
- 26:58what was i not good at what can
- 27:00i work on what doesn't necessarily need
- 27:02work you know reinforcement whatever you
- 27:05want to call it uh and that's also
- 27:09helped a hell of a lot at me
- 27:12being able to go in and then learn
- 27:15things about myself i didn't know like i
- 27:18learned that uh
- 27:22And anybody who's met me for more than
- 27:23ten minutes knows, like, I don't shut up.
- 27:27Whether it's warming up, working out,
- 27:31just standing around and talking, like,
- 27:32it's very rare for me to be quiet
- 27:34for more than five,
- 27:35ten minutes at a time.
- 27:37And what I learned at Monster Games over
- 27:39the summer is that I'm able to be
- 27:43able to kind of lock in,
- 27:45focus in without putting too much pressure
- 27:47on myself, which wasn't a thing before.
- 27:50I did that for the last workout of
- 27:54the day.
- 27:55I figured out that I could do that.
- 27:57And that was a big thing for me.
- 27:59Because now I know how to do it.
- 28:01Whereas before, if I was like that,
- 28:04just kind of in my own head,
- 28:06there'd be all kinds of crazy shit going
- 28:07on.
- 28:09Where now I was able to just focus
- 28:11in.
- 28:11This is what we're doing.
- 28:12Okay, cool.
- 28:13Come out.
- 28:13Execute.
- 28:15Outstanding.
- 28:15Moving right along.
- 28:18So for me, that was a big deal.
- 28:20I wrote that down, underlined it,
- 28:22circled it, highlighted it,
- 28:24because that's something I'm going to be
- 28:25able to use going forward.
- 28:28Yeah, for me,
- 28:29it's kind of the flip thing right now.
- 28:32Like I was you ten years ago, right?
- 28:35I had the chip on my shoulder.
- 28:37I did everything out of anger.
- 28:39And then when things were taken away from
- 28:41me due to my back injury,
- 28:43like then things got squirrely for me.
- 28:47And I think that's what Vicki's pointing
- 28:49to with what if it's not there anymore?
- 28:52And I've been on that side where I
- 28:55couldn't control that I still had that,
- 28:58right?
- 29:00And when that got taken away from me,
- 29:03then it went to my confidence just
- 29:06shriveled.
- 29:08And so if you look at the thumbnail
- 29:10for today,
- 29:11I have you with the chip and me
- 29:15with finding confidence, right?
- 29:17Because I'm on the other side of that
- 29:19where I can't even hold the chip because
- 29:23I don't even know if I'm able to.
- 29:27And so I'm fighting for confidence.
- 29:30And I think that's where...
- 29:33We have to look at the flip side
- 29:34that if that is pulled away,
- 29:36do you have the tools and resources
- 29:38available to you to keep moving,
- 29:41to keep grinding,
- 29:43to keep getting after it when it's ripped
- 29:45away from you?
- 29:48I hope so.
- 29:50I really do.
- 29:52I like to think that I do just
- 29:54for the, and this is God's grace,
- 29:58the group that I have surrounded myself
- 30:00with.
- 30:02whether it be my wife and children and
- 30:05my training partners and just the friends
- 30:07that I have around here who all believe
- 30:09in me.
- 30:11And it is absolutely unreal.
- 30:13And it doesn't matter what the results
- 30:15are.
- 30:17It doesn't matter that you pointed this
- 30:20one into the stands or you did this
- 30:23terribly and whatnot.
- 30:25they are able to, you know, from Brandon,
- 30:29from, uh, my, my, uh, my best friend,
- 30:33uh, Bernard and whatnot,
- 30:35kind of narrow it down for me and
- 30:36be like, Hey, this part doesn't matter.
- 30:40Right.
- 30:40This is one piece of a really big
- 30:42fucking puzzle that we're doing and it
- 30:44does not matter.
- 30:45So like I have been in mad immensely
- 30:49blessed to be able to have that kind
- 30:51of,
- 30:53even when I get down on myself and
- 30:55I'm not feeling confident,
- 30:56because that's probably more often than it
- 30:59isn't,
- 31:00these people there to be able to like,
- 31:02hey, bro, you're doing the right things.
- 31:05This is going to happen.
- 31:06It's not a linear path by any stretch
- 31:09of the imagination.
- 31:10It's not a straight line.
- 31:11It's not a forty five degree angle.
- 31:13It's going to go up.
- 31:13It's going to go down.
- 31:14It's going to go up.
- 31:15It's going to go down.
- 31:16It might go real down for a little
- 31:17while, but you're going to go back up.
- 31:20And they're not going to let me.
- 31:22And I know that's external motivation,
- 31:25external factors and whatnot,
- 31:26but it's there.
- 31:29Right.
- 31:29So let me, let me,
- 31:31let me give you a little story time.
- 31:33I love it.
- 31:34Because I want you to understand where I'm
- 31:36at.
- 31:36And Vicky makes a comment here.
- 31:38I'm not going to pull it up because
- 31:40it makes it hard for me to see.
- 31:41But because the anger is unstable,
- 31:44because it's based in emotion.
- 31:46So redefining the baseline is all you can
- 31:48do in the moment and lean more forward.
- 31:55So I'm grinding.
- 31:56I'm losing a ton of weight.
- 31:58I'm getting fit.
- 31:59I'm doing competitions.
- 32:00I'm doing the whole thing.
- 32:02All of a sudden they go to deadlift
- 32:03one day, back.
- 32:06Then all of a sudden it becomes sciatica.
- 32:08Then it goes down my leg.
- 32:09Then my leg goes numb.
- 32:11And then I was a coach at the
- 32:13same time.
- 32:15That community was my support that you
- 32:17talk about.
- 32:18These people that surrounded me,
- 32:19these people that loved on me.
- 32:22I get approached by the owner to say,
- 32:24hey, because of your back injury,
- 32:27we think you need to take time to
- 32:28yourself.
- 32:29And we are asking you not to coach
- 32:32anymore and blah, blah, blah, right?
- 32:36Well, in my emotional state,
- 32:38I took that as go away,
- 32:40come back when you're better.
- 32:44And so then I go away.
- 32:46I don't have that support system anymore.
- 32:48I don't have the people loving on me.
- 32:51I don't have the positive piece of it.
- 32:53And I was unaware of a neutral.
- 32:56I was completely unaware of it because it
- 32:58was either negative or positive.
- 33:01And so I went into a downward spiral
- 33:06that just kept going and going and going.
- 33:08And if you're a community and you don't
- 33:10catch that person starting the spiral at
- 33:14step one or step two,
- 33:15it's real hard to get them out.
- 33:19So when that started going,
- 33:22I had no neutral to lean back on.
- 33:27And it made it really,
- 33:28really hard for me in those times.
- 33:31And someone who fought through all the
- 33:33negativity and all the weight gain and all
- 33:35that to kick that in the ass,
- 33:39I lost every bit of confidence in what
- 33:41I could do.
- 33:46And so I hope that the communities in
- 33:52the gyms and Kelly Clark and I talked
- 33:54about this last night.
- 33:56Like her vision is that if a person
- 33:59walks out your door,
- 34:00you need to catch them in the first
- 34:02step to get them back in just to
- 34:04hang out with you.
- 34:06It doesn't even have to be to lift
- 34:07a weight.
- 34:08It doesn't have to be to get on
- 34:09a bike.
- 34:10Just come back and be here.
- 34:13And that's what I want communities to
- 34:16understand.
- 34:17I want gym owners to understand.
- 34:19Like it's that first step you've got to
- 34:21get them.
- 34:23Don't let them go and hope they're coming
- 34:25back.
- 34:28But my love was coaching.
- 34:29My love was being an athlete.
- 34:31And when all of that got ripped away
- 34:33all at the same time,
- 34:35it was just emotionally devastating.
- 34:39It's a lot.
- 34:41It's a lot,
- 34:42especially if it's all of it at once.
- 34:44Like we had one of our coaches at
- 34:46the gym.
- 34:48She couldn't work out for the longest
- 34:49time, was battling knee stuff,
- 34:51ankle stuff, whatever.
- 34:53But she was able to still coach.
- 34:56So she was still able to come in,
- 34:58even if it was killing her not to
- 34:59be able to do stuff.
- 35:01But she could still come in, coach,
- 35:04be a part of the community,
- 35:05see what people are doing, interact,
- 35:07like the whole thing.
- 35:09And she slowly made her way back.
- 35:12Right.
- 35:14Um, so yeah, dude, I,
- 35:16I hate that for you.
- 35:17I absolutely hate that for you because I
- 35:19know firsthand what it's like to,
- 35:24to be able to find something right.
- 35:27That's holy shit.
- 35:28These are my people.
- 35:28These are, this is my tribe.
- 35:30These are, these are my things.
- 35:31And then I can't imagine because it has
- 35:34not happened to me at that point,
- 35:36but having it all pulled away like that
- 35:39and well-meaning,
- 35:41Because I don't feel like,
- 35:43from what you're saying anyway,
- 35:44it doesn't feel like they were like, oh,
- 35:46you're hurt.
- 35:46Get the fuck out of here.
- 35:47We don't want you in here anymore.
- 35:49It feels more like they were just like,
- 35:50hey,
- 35:51maybe you should take it easy for a
- 35:52little while and then come back when
- 35:53you're ready.
- 35:54But in your head, it was just like,
- 35:58you can't do anything.
- 35:59Don't come over here.
- 36:01To this day,
- 36:01I can't tell you what it was.
- 36:03Because at the time,
- 36:04I was not able to look at it
- 36:07without emotion.
- 36:08And to this day, I couldn't.
- 36:11I mean,
- 36:11you're talking about a guy that lost two
- 36:14hundred fifty pounds.
- 36:15I was my picture was on everything to
- 36:18promote that gym.
- 36:20My picture was on the website.
- 36:21My picture was in the hallway.
- 36:23You lost a linebacker.
- 36:26What's that?
- 36:27You lost a linebacker.
- 36:29I did.
- 36:30I mean, not just a regular person.
- 36:33And so when it happened,
- 36:36my thoughts went to, okay,
- 36:38now that I'm struggling and I'm not your
- 36:41poster child anymore,
- 36:44you just want me to go away so
- 36:46people can't see me gain the weight back.
- 36:49And then it just started to go.
- 36:54And it went hard and it went fast.
- 36:57And it took weeks for friends to reach
- 37:01out.
- 37:02they didn't know what to say right like
- 37:05it just was it was really really bad
- 37:09and and so that's why that's why i
- 37:12wanted to have this discussion with you
- 37:13because i know what that chip does for
- 37:15you and when you're in it and you
- 37:18see all the good it does you don't
- 37:20ever think about do i do i have
- 37:23the tools available to available to me
- 37:26when
- 37:30if that is taken away in any stretch
- 37:32or any means?
- 37:35I've had thoughts about it.
- 37:37What do I do if I can't?
- 37:41For whatever reason.
- 37:43What do I do if I can't?
- 37:46Because it's an identity thing at that
- 37:47point.
- 37:47Right now, I think of myself as husband,
- 37:51father, or husband, dad, really,
- 37:55and athlete, in that order.
- 37:57Right.
- 37:58I am my I am married to Jennifer.
- 38:00I am.
- 38:02I got three bad ass kids and I
- 38:05am a CrossFit athlete who is trying to
- 38:08be the best,
- 38:09best possible human I can be.
- 38:11And if not,
- 38:12if one of those things get taken away,
- 38:14I'm always going to be a husband and
- 38:17a dad.
- 38:18But like if for whatever reason,
- 38:19if I break my leg in seventeen places,
- 38:22what am I going to do then?
- 38:25Right.
- 38:25Cause I wasn't, I didn't lose two fifty,
- 38:28but I lost quite a bit of weight
- 38:31at one point in my life.
- 38:32And I was fat and fucking miserable when
- 38:35I was fat.
- 38:35I was miserable and I wasn't just
- 38:37miserable to me.
- 38:37I was miserable to everybody around me.
- 38:39And I'm aware of that now.
- 38:41So Frida, Frida, you're probably correct.
- 38:45It's almost sounds like they spoke without
- 38:48knowing or being able to say,
- 38:50find the right words.
- 38:51I think that's it.
- 38:52Exactly.
- 38:55But in my head,
- 38:57I couldn't discern that in that moment
- 39:00because I was all emotion.
- 39:04Yeah,
- 39:04you couldn't split the two things up.
- 39:08Yeah.
- 39:12This is really hard to do on my
- 39:14phone, I'm telling you.
- 39:18KDL, geez,
- 39:19I've been going through a lot of this
- 39:21stuff lately, too, in different ways.
- 39:24Going to have to rewatch this one.
- 39:28Yeah,
- 39:28this isn't really where I thought we were
- 39:30going in this, totally.
- 39:32But they've pretty much taken up the whole
- 39:33show.
- 39:34And I think...
- 39:36think it's good for me i'll just be
- 39:37honest it's very therapeutic that we're
- 39:39talking about this good i'm glad um and
- 39:43vicky has helped with you know sending
- 39:45words of encouragement um howie has sent
- 39:48words of encouragement like because i
- 39:51wrestled with when i was doing the weight
- 39:53loss show and it was so public i
- 39:56really had a hard time with that too
- 39:58and um and i've been trying to get
- 40:01over that for the last two years
- 40:05And so trying to work through all this
- 40:07stuff is really, really hard.
- 40:13So I'm glad we're having this conversation
- 40:15anyway.
- 40:16But what we have learned,
- 40:19or at least what I feel like we
- 40:20have learned anyway,
- 40:21is that anything that's worth doing is
- 40:24probably going to be pretty difficult to
- 40:25do, right?
- 40:29And so if you're getting something out of
- 40:32it, if it's making you...
- 40:34you know,
- 40:35if it's cathartic in any kind of way,
- 40:38even though this is not the easiest
- 40:39conversation we've had by far,
- 40:41generally speaking,
- 40:42it's more like maybe they should hire
- 40:43Billy Napier twice as opposed to let's
- 40:46talk about some real, real type shit.
- 40:48Then I think it's worth doing.
- 40:53Yeah.
- 40:54Yeah.
- 40:54I think in one, on one hand,
- 40:56it's really easy to say, just show up,
- 40:59like literally just show up for yourself
- 41:01every single day.
- 41:02And that's the neutral way of thinking,
- 41:04right?
- 41:06Just show up.
- 41:07And whatever you can get in that day,
- 41:09you've gotten in.
- 41:12And that's step one.
- 41:14On the other side, you're like,
- 41:15I've got this mountain to climb.
- 41:18And that's the emotional way of looking at
- 41:20it.
- 41:21And then it looks so daunting.
- 41:23It's so hard.
- 41:25Like,
- 41:25how do we break this up into workable
- 41:29pieces, right?
- 41:33So when I signed up for my first
- 41:36ever Masters competition,
- 41:38and I did not understand at the time,
- 41:39but the guy who was in my gym,
- 41:40Cecil Piazza, said,
- 41:43so you're taking a bite out of the
- 41:44elephant, huh?
- 41:46And I had no idea what the fuck
- 41:48he was talking about.
- 41:51Whatsoever.
- 41:52And I was just like, yeah,
- 41:54there you go.
- 41:56It took me quite some time before I
- 41:58finally ended up looking it up.
- 41:59And I was like,
- 42:00how do you eat an elephant?
- 42:01One bite at a time.
- 42:02Right.
- 42:03So that's what, you know,
- 42:04you saying that just show up,
- 42:06which is what we tell people as a
- 42:08coach.
- 42:08What I tell people at the gym,
- 42:11especially new people that just signed up,
- 42:13is that, you know, oh, man,
- 42:15this is hard.
- 42:17Yeah, it is.
- 42:18It's going to be hard.
- 42:20You're going to get better.
- 42:22All I need you to do is come
- 42:24back tomorrow.
- 42:26That's it.
- 42:26So I think I'm asking you to come
- 42:27back tomorrow.
- 42:29Be present while you're here.
- 42:33So this is for Jay Birch,
- 42:35and then we're going to shut off because
- 42:37the Florida Fitness Podcast is going live
- 42:39in about two minutes.
- 42:41I don't want anybody to miss that.
- 42:43But this is for Jay Birch.
- 42:44My why?
- 42:46To live my older life better than my
- 42:51younger life.
- 42:52And that means to get around,
- 42:55to do what I want to do,
- 42:56to go hiking,
- 42:58to do all of those things that I
- 43:00want to do with my daughter,
- 43:01with my wife,
- 43:02and do it without worrying about,
- 43:05can I do it?
- 43:07And that is my why.
- 43:10He keeps asking me that.
- 43:11That is my why.
- 43:13Tune in tomorrow.
- 43:15And we'll talk about it probably some more
- 43:16because this probably has opened up a
- 43:18floodgate of things.
- 43:20Maybe I'll bring Corey back and we'll have
- 43:22this go a little bit further.
- 43:26And hopefully I'll have internet tomorrow
- 43:29to make this a whole lot easier.
- 43:32But with that...
- 43:33Head over to the CrossFit Games YouTube
- 43:37channel for the Sport of Fitness podcast
- 43:39and find out where the twenty twenty six
- 43:41CrossFit Games are going to be.
- 43:43And Dave is going to be on to
- 43:45talk about the season.
- 43:47So with that,
- 43:48we'll be back tomorrow with more.
- 43:50Hopefully you enjoyed this and taking a
- 43:54peek into our therapy session.
- 43:57And with that.
- 43:59Have an awesome day, guys.
- 44:01I don't know how to get to my
- 44:02media assets to do the ending thing.
- 44:06So I am going to try to find
- 44:09out how to stop recording.
- 44:11And we're going to do that.
- 44:15I have no idea, dude.
- 44:18I have no idea.
- 44:20I don't think I can do it.
- 44:22Yeah, you can't.
- 44:23Nope.
- 44:28uh yeah i'm gonna hit end yeah we're
- 44:32gonna try that you guys tomorrow bye
