- 0:00Psalm 12 from the book of Psalms.
- 0:02First let's pray, dear Lord, please open our minds and our
- 0:06hearts and our ears to what you have to say through David.
- 0:10We ask this in Jesus name. So Psalm 12 says it's for the
- 0:14director of music according to the Shemaneth, a Psalm of David
- 0:20and this let's see the Shemaneth is probably a musical term.
- 0:27So it's begins, help Jehovah or help Lord, for no one is
- 0:33faithful any more. Those who are loyal have
- 0:37vanished from the human race. Everyone lies to their neighbor.
- 0:41They flatter with their lips, but harbour deception in their
- 0:46hearts. May the Lord silence all
- 0:49flattering lips, in every boastful tongue.
- 0:51Those who say by our tongues we will prevail, our own lips will
- 0:56defend us. Who is Lord over us?
- 1:00Because the poor are plundered and the needy groan.
- 1:04I will now arise, says the Lord. I will protect them from those
- 1:10who malign them, And the words of the Lord are flawless, like
- 1:15silver purified in a Crucible, like gold refined 7 times.
- 1:21You, Lord, will keep the needy safe and will protect us forever
- 1:27from the wicked who freely strut about when what is vile is
- 1:32honored by the human race. And that ends Psalm 12.
- 1:37So when I was looking at this, it was, you know, David was
- 1:41distraught. And just now as I was reading
- 1:43this, I was looking at David was referring to himself as the
- 1:50needy. At least the way the NIV
- 1:52translates this, it says you, Lord, will keep the needy safe
- 1:58and will protect us forever from the wicked.
- 2:02So it's very interesting. I, I don't know at what time of
- 2:06David's life this was he was exclaiming this, but remember,
- 2:10David was the king. And so he is, he's, he's humble
- 2:15in that way where he's calling himself the needy.
- 2:18And I didn't look up the actual Hebrew word for that, but I, I
- 2:23can, I just, maybe I should right now.
- 2:26It's so it's Psalm 12, verse 7, and let's say you, O Lord, and
- 2:35that's again, as we've talked about in the past, it's Jehovah
- 2:40or Yehovah. You will preserve them from this
- 2:45generation forever. You will keep.
- 2:51Let's see. So the NASB sentence would be
- 2:55you, O Lord will keep them. You will preserve him from this
- 3:02generation forever. So it's kind of, it is a little
- 3:07bit different than the way the NIV says it.
- 3:10So either way though it, it does talk about God being the, you
- 3:16know, preserving this generation.
- 3:21So you, O Lord, will keep them. You will preserve him.
- 3:26That's really interesting. It was them and then it says him
- 3:29from this generation forever, I guess the wicked generation and
- 3:35so that you know, it's really, you know, God is our refuge.
- 3:39David says that so many times and we have protection in him
- 3:44and forever. That's that's a keyword that's
- 3:49translated in in both NIV and the NASB in Hebrew.
- 3:54It is, it is said, you know, forever, everlasting, perpetual,
- 4:01evermore, always. Those are different synonyms for
- 4:07the word that's being used. So God is a forever protection
- 4:13from the wicked. So I think it's more in, in an
- 4:17eternal sense because we know that innocent people do get
- 4:22harmed. Innocent people do get killed,
- 4:25but in an eternal sense, God is their protection and they will
- 4:31not be condemned like the wicked ones will, provided they've put
- 4:39their trust and faith in God as their refuge.
- 4:42And again, they, they are faithful to God.
- 4:46They believe and they you know, God is God is the judge here.
- 4:52So it says again, I looked up every reference to the Lord and
- 4:57it was Jehovah on this one in this Psalm.
- 5:01And so at the beginning he's he's talking about people who
- 5:04are liars and deceivers and they are prideful yet and they reject
- 5:09God and they don't think God has any in you know, God to them.
- 5:13It doesn't like who is Lord over us.
- 5:15You know, they just reject God. And then it this was interesting
- 5:21to me, verse 5, where it said, because the poor are plundered
- 5:26and the needy groan, I will now arise, says the Lord, I will
- 5:31protect them from those who malign them.
- 5:34And that gives me a thought of, you know, a future prophecy
- 5:41where the Lord will arise. He he perhaps has done this many
- 5:46times throughout history where he's defended his people.
- 5:50There are times where he supernaturally protected his
- 5:54people. So I think this is an ongoing
- 5:57fulfillment because it says, you know, the Lord will keep the
- 6:00needy safe and will protect us from ever from the wicked who
- 6:04freely strut about when what is vile is honored by the human
- 6:09race. When I read that part, I think
- 6:11about again the end of the age where it says what is vile is
- 6:17honored by the human race. This is probably like one of
- 6:22those those Psalms or those parts of Scripture that is
- 6:30fulfilled multiple times like in history, because there are
- 6:35different times where there is other images.
- 6:39I mean way back in the beginning and Exodus when Exodus 20 when
- 6:45God gave the 10 commandments, the Israelites while Moses was
- 6:49gone for the period of time, I guess it was 40 days on the
- 6:51mountain getting the 10 commandments from God.
- 6:56The people melted their gold jewelry and then made calf idols
- 7:01to worship. So it didn't take them very long
- 7:04to go back into idolatry. And that's like an image that
- 7:09they were worshipping right after God himself LED them out
- 7:14of Egypt out of slavery. They went back to what they
- 7:17learned in Egypt. And it just shows like how weak
- 7:21people are in general. And I'm not saying those
- 7:25specific people, I'm saying all of us are weak on our own.
- 7:29It and it says like you in our weakness.
- 7:32That's when our strength comes from God.
- 7:35It's through the Holy Spirit that we actually have strength
- 7:38through God. And but again in verse 8, it
- 7:43says when, when what is vile is honored by the human race.
- 7:48So we also know that there was this what Antiochus Epiphanes
- 7:52who set up some image and and some Zeus image and I think also
- 7:58sacrificed a pig. It's written in the Book of
- 8:00Maccabees, which is not in all Bibles, but in some.
- 8:04And so that was a time when something vile was being honored
- 8:09by the human race, like any of these other gods that are being
- 8:13worshipped by the human race. I mean, that is considered vile.
- 8:17That is idolatry according to the 10 Commandments.
- 8:21And that's the truth. That's what that is.
- 8:24And in the future, it talks about a time when people will
- 8:27worship an image that gets set up and an image that is enabled
- 8:33to speak. I don't know if that's
- 8:34supernatural or something, but that's what the Book of
- 8:38Revelation talks about. Like in the end.
- 8:41So again, history repeats itself over and over again and but God
- 8:47always remains protection. So we just need to remember that
- 8:52no matter what time period in history we're in, God is our
- 8:57protection and the words of God are perfect and refined.
- 9:03So it says and you know this is verse 6 and the words of the
- 9:06Lord Lord are flawless, like silver purified in a Crucible,
- 9:12like gold refined 7 times. So and then he is our safety and
- 9:17protection. So throughout history, we just
- 9:19have to know that God is our protection.
- 9:22No matter what is going on in the world, God wants us to call
- 9:27on him and he will protect us and we just have to put our
- 9:32faith in him and then we will receive his protection.
- 9:37Even I think about like Stephen, who was, it's in the New
- 9:42Testament where Stephen was being stoned to death and he was
- 9:46a believer. And as he was being stoned to
- 9:49death, he looked up and he said he saw the Son of God.
- 9:55And and so even in his suffering, he saw God.
- 10:03And it said his something like his face was peaceful or
- 10:07something like that of an Angel or something like, I don't know
- 10:11when we put our trust in God. Perhaps, you know, just I'm just
- 10:16saying it from Stephen's experience that's described in
- 10:20the in the Bible with his face like that in the midst of being
- 10:24stoned. I don't know if you would have
- 10:27that. I don't know how you would have
- 10:29that look. And and I don't know this for
- 10:32sure, but I do. It does make me wonder if God's
- 10:35supernatural protection, it, you know, just does something to a
- 10:42person who is suffering on behalf of Christ where perhaps
- 10:49that pain may be taken away. Like it really does happen, like
- 10:53people do die, but perhaps, and I don't know this, that they are
- 11:00relieved of their pain to some degree by God.
- 11:04I, I don't know, but it just seems like he had this peaceful
- 11:07look. And how could you have a
- 11:08peaceful look when you're being stoned except if you are under
- 11:13the power of God? So just something to consider
- 11:17and maybe explore that passage in the New Testament.
- 11:20I did not look that one up either.
- 11:23Let's see where that's found. It was Steven.
- 11:29I'm going to see if it if it's easy to find or not.
- 11:35Let's see. I can't.
- 11:37They stirred up. They were sitting OK here it
- 11:41says. But Stephen full of the Holy
- 11:44Spirit looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus
- 11:49standing at the right hand of God.
- 11:53While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, Lord Jesus,
- 11:58receive my spirit. So, you know, how did he endure
- 12:03this? We don't know if it just, I, I
- 12:08thought there was something about his face looking like, you
- 12:11know, very peaceful or something.
- 12:16I don't know. I just, I'll read the whole,
- 12:18it's an Acts in the book of Acts verses 54 through 60.
- 12:26When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were
- 12:30furious, furious and gnashed their teeth at him.
- 12:34But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and
- 12:38saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of
- 12:42God. Look, he said, I see heaven
- 12:46open, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of
- 12:49God. At this, they covered their ears
- 12:53and yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed him,
- 12:56dragged him out in the city and began to stone him.
- 13:00Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a
- 13:04young man named Saul. Now this is this is this young
- 13:10man named Saul is actually Paul. Later his when is this is Saul
- 13:15before his name was changed to Paul, who wrote these books?
- 13:18Because there's a later reference that says this was it.
- 13:21So Saul is witnessing all of this and he's not stopping it.
- 13:26That's just a side note. I'm not going to get into that.
- 13:29And then it says while they were stoning him, Stephen prayed,
- 13:33Lord Jesus receive my spirit. Then he fell on his knees and
- 13:38cried out, Lord, do not hold this sin against them.
- 13:43When he had said this, he fell asleep.
- 13:46Now falling asleep. A lot of times what the Bible
- 13:50talks about is that's the kind of the transition from our life
- 13:54here on earth into the heavenly realms with the Father and, and
- 14:01it says like he fell asleep. So it doesn't, you know, it
- 14:05doesn't say like he died. And that's very interesting how
- 14:08the Scripture does say this often about those who have
- 14:11fallen asleep. It references that quite a bit.
- 14:14Falling asleep is very different from struggling and death.
- 14:19And it's, it sounds much more peaceful, which brings to mind
- 14:23something that I've heard from Hospice nurses who have been
- 14:27interviewed that say that there is a significant difference with
- 14:31someone who transitions from this life here on earth when
- 14:38they they are a believer and when they are not.
- 14:42So when they are a believer, oftentimes they will see things,
- 14:47they will have peace. It will be very, very peaceful
- 14:50transition to the next age. But those who do not believe,
- 14:57they have these like horrible violent struggles as they pass
- 15:03from this, this age, this world, this life, it's it's a very,
- 15:09very different experience. I would suggest, you know, just
- 15:13look on YouTube and search like nurses or Hospice nurses.
- 15:19I don't know what you'd use like Hospice nurses and patients who
- 15:23believe or patients who don't believe and see what you find
- 15:26out from the words of the actual Hospice nurses.
- 15:29But I've seen multiple accounts with Hospice nurses talking
- 15:33about the extreme difference between a believer and a non
- 15:37believer. And so Steven here, you know, it
- 15:40just says he fell asleep. So he had a peaceful transition
- 15:44and he said something that was very similar to what Jesus said
- 15:47on the cross. Lord, do not hold the sin
- 15:51against them. Jesus said something about that
- 15:54when they were the people referring to the people that
- 15:56were crucify him. Lord forgive them for they do
- 16:00not know what they do. Something to that effect and
- 16:05Lord forgive. I'm going to see if I can find
- 16:06those. Actually, that verse too, but
- 16:10it's very similar to what I can't.
- 16:14I didn't look it up. Well, I didn't find it.
- 16:19Our father, maybe Father forgive.
- 16:26I'll see if that shows it. Yes, this is it.
- 16:29So Luke 23 verse 34, Jesus said Father forgive them for they do
- 16:35not know what they are doing and they divided up his clothes by
- 16:40casting lots. So you know, this is Jesus on
- 16:44his cross. I well, I don't know if he was
- 16:48on the cross yet. Yeah, I guess yes, He was on the
- 16:51cross when he said this because it says when they came to the
- 16:57place called the Skull, they crucified him there along with
- 17:01the criminals, one on his right and the other on his left.
- 17:04Jesus said Father forgive them for they do not know what they
- 17:08are doing and they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
- 17:12The people stood watching and the rulers even sneered at him.
- 17:16They said he saved others, let him save himself if he is God's
- 17:22Messiah. The Chosen 1.
- 17:26The soldiers also came up and mocked him.
- 17:29They offered him wine vinegar and said if you are the king of
- 17:32the Jews, save yourself. There was a written notice above
- 17:36him which read This is the King of the Jews.
- 17:39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him.
- 17:43Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us.
- 17:46But the other criminal rebuked him.
- 17:49Don't you fear God? He said, since you are under the
- 17:53same sentence, we are punished justly.
- 17:56For what? For we are getting what our
- 18:00deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing
- 18:03wrong. Then he said, Jesus, Remember Me
- 18:08when you come into your Kingdom. Jesus answered him Truly, I tell
- 18:13you today you will be with me in paradise.
- 18:18Isn't, you know, like Can you imagine that the mercy and the
- 18:21love of God on the cross, the Son of God he is, he sees like
- 18:26there's two criminals and one of them is mocking him on the cross
- 18:31and the other one has this realization.
- 18:35He comes to repentance on the cross and immediately Jesus says
- 18:39to him, you know, you're going to be with me in paradise.
- 18:43Like you realized the wrong, like he, you can see that this
- 18:47other man on the side, he said, you know, we are punished justly
- 18:50for we are getting what our deeds deserved.
- 18:52He recognized that we deserve this and Jesus doesn't deserve
- 18:58this. And then he asked, you know,
- 19:00Please remember me, which is kind of interesting.
- 19:03Like I wonder why he says, and he was saying Jesus remember, it
- 19:08says Mim Neskome. I don't know how you say that in
- 19:13Greek, but I want to look like remember it says to remind, to
- 19:17recall, to remember a thing, be mindful of it's kind of
- 19:21interesting. It's like, Please remember me.
- 19:23And who knows what his background was.
- 19:27We aren't giving it any information about that.
- 19:30But Jesus, you know, gives him forgiveness right there on the
- 19:33cross, just showing again the love of God and, and the mercy
- 19:39of God and what is available to us.
- 19:42I mean, this man was sincere on the cross.
- 19:45He wasn't just saying, you know, forgive me so I can go sin
- 19:48again. He was, he realized, yeah, I'm
- 19:51getting what I deserved. So anyway, that is, that's
- 19:57pretty much all I have on Psalm. 12 But I'm there's a few
- 20:03questions and answers in the Study Bible.
- 20:05I will read those and then conclude this chapter.
- 20:08So why were there no faithful people left?
- 20:11There were still faithful people, but David was
- 20:14exaggerating for emphasis, a figure of speech known as a
- 20:17hyperbole. David felt like there was no one
- 20:20left who was faithful and would stand with him.
- 20:24Didn't they have a right to freedom of speech?
- 20:26Yes, but their speech. This is referring to may the
- 20:30Lord's silence, all flattering lips and every boastful tongue.
- 20:33Those who say our tongues will prevail, our own lips will
- 20:36defend us. Who is Lord over us?
- 20:38So it says. Didn't they have a a right to
- 20:40the freedom of speech? Yes, but their speech revealed
- 20:43the proud attitudes that motivated them.
- 20:46By announcing their freedom to say what they wanted, these
- 20:49people showed their desire to do what they wanted.
- 20:53Their loose lips revealed their rebellious hearts.
- 20:57So who was maligning whom? The rich and powerful were
- 21:01verbally attacking the oppressed in the weak.
- 21:04Perhaps they wanted to justify their own lack of compassion and
- 21:08failure to help the poor. It may have been that they
- 21:12unfairly blamed the poor for their own problems, accusing
- 21:15them of laziness. So I don't I don't know how we
- 21:19can it says this is referencing the verse that says because the
- 21:24poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise that the
- 21:29Lord I will protect them from those who maligned them.
- 21:32I guess those who who use them, I don't know, OK, what vile
- 21:38things were people honoring the wealthy were apparently
- 21:42arrogantly parading their riches around while neglecting the
- 21:46poor. God was displeased with their
- 21:48pompous self centeredness and desire to use their wealth to
- 21:52court people's favor. And I don't, you know, I don't
- 21:57know where that comes from as far as the wealthy part.
- 22:01I just see, you know, in in verse 8 that it talks about what
- 22:05is vile is honored and you know what is vile or evil.
- 22:12And I know oftentimes I mean that maybe I see things a little
- 22:16bit differently than the study Bible, but I see it as idolatry
- 22:19and wealth can be idolatry if you're putting wealth above God
- 22:24and if that's where your trust is in like, and we do see that
- 22:28today. Like if people know Bible
- 22:30prophecy, they know that at some point Jesus is going to return.
- 22:36And I don't know if you know, there there are wealthy people
- 22:40who are building bunkers now, they're maybe not thinking about
- 22:43the return of Jesus, but they're thinking and looking at what is
- 22:46happening in the world and looking for a place of
- 22:49protection that their wealth can buy.
- 22:51But in the Book of Revelation in chapter 6, it says that, you
- 22:56know, they hid in caves saying fall on us and hide us from the
- 23:00face of him, from the wrath, the wrath of God and his Son.
- 23:04And, and there is no protection. And just like David and other
- 23:10prophets said, you know, I can go here, I can go there, but
- 23:13nowhere can I escape you. There is no hiding from God.
- 23:17God sees and knows everything and he is a just God and someday
- 23:23he will bring everything to justice.
- 23:26And if not in this life, it'll be at judgement time.
- 23:31So we can't escape God. We will be held accountable.
- 23:36And but yet at the same time, that's not really what this this
- 23:40whole Psalm is about. This Psalm is about God being
- 23:43the protector of the needy, that putting our faith and trust in
- 23:47God and in his word because what he says is true and righteous.
- 23:52And, and then to remember like what Jesus did on the cross and
- 23:55his mercy and his love. I mean, that's really the the
- 24:00thing that we should remember from the Psalm.
- 24:02So I'm going to conclude Psalm 12.
- 24:07And if you felt this was beneficial, please share this
