- 0:00Welcome to the Health with Hashimoto's podcast. Our summer series is the Hashimoto's Health Lab.
- 0:06This series is going to be 10-minute episodes.
- 0:08Every week, we'll talk about a specific tool or practice. We're going to cover
- 0:12everything from environmental detox to stress reduction, energy boosters,
- 0:16biohacks, and all of it is going to be designed to give you tools for better
- 0:21health with Hashimoto's.
- 0:22I'm your host, Esther Yunkin. I'm a registered nurse helping women uncover their
- 0:26root causes and regain energy.
- 0:28So these episodes are going to be short. If you are ready for a deeper transformation,
- 0:33check out the Holistic Hashimoto's course. It will help you identify your unique
- 0:37triggers and root causes so that you can focus your own energy on what really
- 0:42matters for your health.
- 0:43Are you ready to explore a new strategy for thriving with Hashimoto's?
- 0:47Let's dive in. This is the Hashimoto's Health Lab.
- 0:50When you were a kid, or maybe even as an adult, You blew up a balloon,
- 0:54rubbed it on your head, made your hair stand on end, and then you touched somebody
- 0:59to release all of that electrical energy and shock them, right?
- 1:03You know exactly what I'm talking about. I think we have all done that.
- 1:06We've been on the giving and receiving end.
- 1:08Well, today's tool that we're going to talk about relates to that.
- 1:12And I admit that the first time I heard about it, I was like, what is this weirdness?
- 1:17But there is really good research behind it. And there's more and more stuff coming out,
- 1:23like real science, but also tons and tons of stories of people using this tool
- 1:29for better health. This tool has a couple names.
- 1:33Number one is earthing and the other is grounding. They both mean the same thing.
- 1:37It's basically go touch grass. It is getting physically connected together.
- 1:42With the Earth's surface to restore electrical balance.
- 1:47And there's a lot of things in our modern world that kind of insulate us from
- 1:52the Earth's electricity.
- 1:55Think of it like when you walk outside barefoot, like you're constantly kind
- 1:59of getting a shock of the balloon,
- 2:01constantly making sure that your electrons or whatever are not built up too much,
- 2:07like you're equalizing with the earth but when
- 2:10we're walking on shoes that have insulating material
- 2:14like rubber when we live in an urban environment
- 2:17like concrete asphalt all these surfaces are
- 2:20not as conductive and then you live in up above like you know high-rise buildings
- 2:27way up in an apartment anytime that you're indoors you're insulated there are
- 2:32so many things that insulate us from the earth's natural electrical charge.
- 2:37And this is just normal to us. And that is why the first time I learned about
- 2:41this, I was like, this is weird.
- 2:43Why do we need to go touch grass? Why do we need to be in contact with the earth's surface?
- 2:50But let me tell you some benefits from grounding or earthing.
- 2:55And all this is, is direct skin contact or contact through natural fibers.
- 3:01Like you know, linen or cotton, I'm not talking polyester, I'm not talking about
- 3:06plastics, natural fibers, or skin on ground.
- 3:10These are some of the benefits that happen. And this could be anywhere from
- 3:14five minutes to 30 minutes of earthing or grounding.
- 3:18It can also be cumulative. So like you go out every day for some grounding,
- 3:23and you're going to notice these benefits.
- 3:25And they range from improved sleep quality.
- 3:28And I don't know why, I don't have the hows and whys for each of these.
- 3:33There is research and there's anecdotes for all of these.
- 3:36But improved sleep quality, this has something to do with your cortisol levels.
- 3:42And of course, cortisol is your stress hormone.
- 3:45A lot of people who practice grounding and their research around it notices reduced inflammation.
- 3:51This is huge when you have an autoimmune condition.
- 3:54We want to regulate our inflammation. We want to get inflammation down because
- 4:00inflammation in your body drives your immune system to go crazy, to be overreactive,
- 4:07to attack what it doesn't need to attack.
- 4:10We want to lower inflammation and grounding is a completely free way to do that.
- 4:15Also, people who practice grounding or earthing experience decreased stress and anxiety.
- 4:21Again, going back to that cortisol, there's other ways too that grounding works.
- 4:26It somehow balances the autonomic nervous system. It reduces cortisol.
- 4:32A lot of people notice improved mood, improved emotional well-being.
- 4:37This could be related to serotonin levels.
- 4:42Again, grounding is just like crazy. We don't see or feel electrons, usually.
- 4:48Obviously, if somebody rubs a balloon on their head and shocks you,
- 4:51you're going to feel it. But usually, we don't feel it.
- 4:55Back in chemistry or biology, science, whatever science class that was back in high school.
- 5:01Did you have one of those big electric balls?
- 5:05I don't know what they're called. And the whole class makes a chain and the
- 5:08first person touches the ball and then there's this whole chain of people.
- 5:12Nobody feels anything because you touch the ball and then the teacher turns
- 5:16on this electron producing ball.
- 5:20Nobody feels anything, but all of a sudden everybody's hair starts to rise.
- 5:24And then the one person in the class who wasn't connected to the big chain of
- 5:29people comes to the end of this chain of people, and that last person reaches
- 5:33out a finger and shocks them.
- 5:34Every single person in the line feels that shock.
- 5:39I don't know about the health of that, but I mean, I experienced it. I don't know about you.
- 5:44A lot of science classes do it. You don't feel the electricity build up.
- 5:49The same thing when you are going out and walking barefoot on the sand.
- 5:53You're walking in the beach. You're swimming in a lake.
- 5:57You are in contact with with the natural earth you don't feel the transfer of
- 6:03electricity to get everything normalized again.
- 6:06But it's happening. All right, so we talked about improved sleep quality, reduced inflammation.
- 6:12Decreased stress and anxiety, enhanced mood, also pain reduction,
- 6:17especially for people who have chronic pain going outside and sitting on the
- 6:21grass for five to 10 minutes every single morning,
- 6:25especially first thing in the morning, where you can also get the early morning sunlight.
- 6:29They find they have reduced pain.
- 6:32People have better blood flow, and this is also related to your blood viscosity.
- 6:38So if you have problems clotting, this could be something that you incorporate
- 6:43into your tools in addition to your blood clotting medications.
- 6:47People find that they recover faster, they have increased energy,
- 6:51and this grounding could modulate or help your immune system function better. It's a lot of things.
- 6:59And grounding is completely free. But what if you, like me, live in a climate
- 7:05where you can't go outside for half of the year.
- 7:07I'm not going to go outside barefoot when it is below freezing or for sure below zero.
- 7:13Just it's not going to happen. In the summer, yes, I try to go outside every day.
- 7:18I have been sitting outside in the mornings with one of our outdoor cats.
- 7:21He comes and climbs up on my lap and then I get the benefits and the feel-good
- 7:26hormones of an animal like happy and purring on my lap too.
- 7:30You know, multiple benefits. so in the summer yes
- 7:33I can go outside grounding maybe you live in a place where
- 7:36it's too hot in the summer so then what do you do well they have
- 7:39grounding sheets and this mimics the same things because you plug it into just
- 7:46the grounding port of your outlet so you have three little prongs on the outlet
- 7:50one of them is just grounding it just is to connect to the earth's surface or
- 7:56the Earth's electricity.
- 7:57And that's what grounding sheets do all night long. You are...
- 8:02Equalizing with the electricity of the earth. And again, I know that this all sounds so crazy.
- 8:09I understand that. It also has some research behind it and lots and lots of anecdotes.
- 8:15The results of people who use grounding sheets, it mimics the same things I just went over.
- 8:21Enhanced sleep quality, reduced inflammation, lowered stress,
- 8:25pain relief, improved mood,
- 8:27better blood circulation, faster post-exercise recovery, improve energy levels,
- 8:33better immune system, and convenience for the weather or if you live in the city.
- 8:39Now, I will say the grounding sheets are not free.
- 8:43Going outside on the ground, absolutely free. The grounding sheets are usually
- 8:47around $200 and some people swear by them.
- 8:52They feel like they've noticed a significant difference in energy and recovery.
- 8:56One person said that they realized for a week they were feeling groggy and sore
- 9:02every morning, and they found that their grounding sheets were not plugged in.
- 9:06Once they reconnected it, they felt better again.
- 9:09One of my friends had a bad experience with grounding sheets, and she felt jittery.
- 9:16She felt like things were not right.
- 9:18You are bio-individual. There is nobody else on earth exactly like you.
- 9:22And that is why in everything, in all of my programs, in all of my courses,
- 9:27I teach you to take control of your own health.
- 9:31Because I'm going to give you a lot of tools over the summer,
- 9:34where we talk about 13 different tools, and only you get to figure out,
- 9:38is this going to work for me? Part of that is knowing your root causes.
- 9:42If you have not gone through the Holistic Hashimoto's course,
- 9:45or at minimum, the Hashimoto's Decoded Root Causes revealed,
- 9:49do that today because that will help you figure out which of these tools are
- 9:54most applicable for you and that will be most helpful.
- 9:57This podcast is for informational and educational purposes only.
