- 0:03Speaker 1: Good to be with you, Kenley. Thanks, thanks for being
- 0:05Speaker 1: with us. Appreciate you very much. I want to get
- 0:08Speaker 1: your take first before AJ and Eric chime in here.
- 0:12Speaker 1: You are so close, my friend, to some pretty incredible
- 0:16Speaker 1: numbers that would be very Hall of Fame worthy. What
- 0:19Speaker 1: is your case for letting Kenlee Jansen get into the
- 0:22Speaker 1: Hall of Fame?
- 0:25Speaker 2: I mean, you know, to hear that, that's unbelievable to
- 0:29Speaker 2: be honest with you, you know, I just played this
- 0:31Speaker 2: game that I love, and I play it hard, and
- 0:34Speaker 2: I want to help my team, every team that I play,
- 0:37Speaker 2: I want to help them win, and all those things
- 0:40Speaker 2: just come, you know, with being successful. So you know,
- 0:43Speaker 2: just hear my name, you know, get titled to that
- 0:47Speaker 2: is just give me such a much more you know,
- 0:51Speaker 2: inspiration and just wanted to just keep grinding in the
- 0:54Speaker 2: in the in the weight room and and and be better.
- 0:57Speaker 3: So you know, it's it's awesome hearing.
- 0:59Speaker 4: That when you're looking for jobs in the off season
- 1:02Speaker 4: or teams are calling, if they said, hey, you're not
- 1:06Speaker 4: going to be the closer. Is that value? Are you
- 1:10Speaker 4: still able to give the same amount of value to
- 1:12Speaker 4: a team. I'm not saying you're not going to try
- 1:14Speaker 4: as hard. I'm saying like your value is in that
- 1:17Speaker 4: ninth inning and I think maybe you don't agree with me,
- 1:20Speaker 4: but I think ninth inning outs are way different than
- 1:22Speaker 4: eighth or seventh inning outs. But is your value maximized
- 1:26Speaker 4: as the closer for a team and then decided on
- 1:30Speaker 4: where you're going if they have a closer or they
- 1:32Speaker 4: don't have a closure.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Be honest with you, You've got to be also, you know,
- 1:36Speaker 2: realistic and see where the game is going and see
- 1:39Speaker 2: how teams value you know, high leverage and just boopen usage.
- 1:44Speaker 2: So you know, I know that it's happening. And you know,
- 1:48Speaker 2: to me right now, it's just you be the best
- 1:51Speaker 2: I can be, and you know, all those decisions is
- 1:54Speaker 2: you know, for aj and and and the front office
- 1:57Speaker 2: to decide on that. For me, I'm going to make
- 2:00Speaker 2: sure I be the best version of myself. And you know,
- 2:03Speaker 2: whatever anything they want me to pitch, you know I
- 2:05Speaker 2: could be ready for it. But like you say, you know,
- 2:07Speaker 2: pitching the night is a whole different animal and me
- 2:10Speaker 2: and me being doing that so long, you know, it
- 2:13Speaker 2: just give you, you know a different energy level when
- 2:17Speaker 2: you pitching that that situation. So it's not like I
- 2:21Speaker 2: haven't pitched the seven or the eight before. You know,
- 2:24Speaker 2: I did those before I become a closer, and you know,
- 2:28Speaker 2: I understand what the game is now.
- 2:30Speaker 5: By the way, I want you pitching in the night.
- 2:32Speaker 5: So AJ want you pitching in the night. Okay. So
- 2:36Speaker 5: just just so you know that, speaking of when you
- 2:38Speaker 5: were going through your free agency and your recruiting pitch,
- 2:41Speaker 5: did you go to Hinch and Scott Harrison say, hey,
- 2:44Speaker 5: you know, if you guys would have had me last year, guys,
- 2:47Speaker 5: maybe you beat the Mariners because I come in and
- 2:49Speaker 5: I'll close down that game five for you guys, because
- 2:52Speaker 5: they had a lead and they blew it out later
- 2:54Speaker 5: in the game. Whatever stuff happens. But was that part
- 2:57Speaker 5: of their pitch to you is like, hey, yes, we
- 2:59Speaker 5: had Finnegan.
- 2:59Speaker 6: He a nice job, but you have you're on track
- 3:02Speaker 6: for a Hall of Fame career. Man. We put you
- 3:04Speaker 6: in that night then and we can take that next step.
- 3:07Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely.
- 3:08Speaker 2: You know it's funny when you say that, because you
- 3:11Speaker 2: know it was mutual interest a year before, and you know,
- 3:16Speaker 2: I thought I'm gonna end up being there a year before,
- 3:19Speaker 2: but then you know everything changed, you know, assigned late,
- 3:24Speaker 2: I signed with the Angels.
- 3:25Speaker 3: I have my mom issue going on also.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Too, So definitely watching the playoffs last year and you
- 3:31Speaker 2: see that, you know they just was one arm or
- 3:34Speaker 2: maybe two a way too, you know, maybe possibility to
- 3:38Speaker 2: play the Wall Series because I think, you know, they
- 3:40Speaker 2: probably could have matched up really well.
- 3:42Speaker 3: With the Blue Jays.
- 3:43Speaker 2: So but yeah, watching that team, you know, that's the
- 3:48Speaker 2: only team that crushed me last year. I feel like
- 3:50Speaker 2: also to give up three homers never happened in my
- 3:52Speaker 2: career and one inning against them, So yeah, it's a
- 3:57Speaker 2: pretty good team. So I'm excited to be and I
- 4:00Speaker 2: can't wait to be to the camping and get know
- 4:02Speaker 2: my teammates and be ready and hopefully you can get
- 4:06Speaker 2: to the same situation again.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Kenley, I played against you when you play when you
- 4:10Speaker 4: were catching, and then I also played against you when
- 4:13Speaker 4: you were in your prime pitching. Do you look at it?
- 4:16Speaker 4: And I always ask superstars this, because you are a superstar.
- 4:21Speaker 4: Do you wish you could have one talent from when
- 4:24Speaker 4: you were in your prime to now and use it
- 4:27Speaker 4: the entire season? I asked this because Eronis Chapman's been
- 4:30Speaker 4: a closers as long as you have maybe just a tick,
- 4:33Speaker 4: maybe a few years less than you have, but he
- 4:37Speaker 4: just he is still his velocity is almost there, and
- 4:41Speaker 4: he wishes he still threw one hundred and five. Is
- 4:42Speaker 4: there one talent or one feeling that you wish you
- 4:46Speaker 4: had from when you were in your prime, prime, most dominant?
- 4:50Speaker 4: Kenley Jansen.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I think I wish I could I have the wisdom
- 4:54Speaker 2: that I have now because I feel like now I
- 4:56Speaker 2: could be a better version of myself, even that consider
- 4:59Speaker 2: not my prime no more. But it's just you understand
- 5:03Speaker 2: your body. You listen to your body more, and you know,
- 5:06Speaker 2: you pace yourself. And I feel like in you know,
- 5:09Speaker 2: the younger days, you know it's just one.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Work ethic, work hard every day, and.
- 5:15Speaker 2: You know that's all I wanted to do, and maybe
- 5:18Speaker 2: that's helped me also to in my career. But if
- 5:21Speaker 2: I would have, you know, know the game better and
- 5:26Speaker 2: pace myself and and be in a different pace, I
- 5:29Speaker 2: think it would have benefit me a whole lot more
- 5:32Speaker 2: So I could have get not as tired to get
- 5:35Speaker 2: in the in the World Series in seventeen and eighteen.
- 5:38Speaker 2: I feel like, you know, those a drag get on
- 5:42Speaker 2: in the seventeen and eighteen in the.
- 5:43Speaker 1: World Series Kenley. A. J. Hinch and I were having
- 5:46Speaker 1: a conversation the other day about you, and he said
- 5:49Speaker 1: that you've been absolutely incredible this winter, that you've really
- 5:52Speaker 1: just said, you know what as you as you told
- 5:54Speaker 1: us that you're willing to do anything to help the
- 5:56Speaker 1: Tigers win, and that you were so incredible after the
- 6:01Speaker 1: bad outing you had against the Tigers, And that's something
- 6:04Speaker 1: that says a lot to him that you're so willing
- 6:08Speaker 1: with the resume that you have to be able to
- 6:11Speaker 1: take the ball at any point because you didn't have
- 6:15Speaker 1: to do that. So what does that say when your
- 6:16Speaker 1: manager has that much respect for the way that you're
- 6:19Speaker 1: willing to change your role just to be part of
- 6:23Speaker 1: something special.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I think it's him changing the culture. I think I
- 6:28Speaker 2: believe you know, when you first got there with the
- 6:30Speaker 2: Tigers to build a winning culture, and when it comes
- 6:34Speaker 2: to the winning culture nowadays, you just understand that the title.
- 6:37Speaker 2: You can't hang on titles, so you have to do
- 6:39Speaker 2: anything to help your team win. So that's my mindset
- 6:42Speaker 2: right now, and that's you know, my goal, and you
- 6:46Speaker 2: know my all players dream is to play in the
- 6:50Speaker 2: Wall series, and you know I play in three Wall series. Finally,
- 6:54Speaker 2: you know, breakthrough in twenty twenty. But you know, I
- 6:57Speaker 2: want to get back to that feeling again. And I
- 7:00Speaker 2: think they have a really good team, really good possibility
- 7:03Speaker 2: to get there, and you know, I want to be
- 7:06Speaker 2: a part, So I want to be a part to
- 7:07Speaker 2: help help them win. So that's all I'm thinking about.
- 7:12Speaker 2: And you know, if they want me to pitch the
- 7:14Speaker 2: ninth great. If if it's any other you know situation
- 7:18Speaker 2: they want me to pitch, you know, you know, to
- 7:20Speaker 2: help the team wins, great too.
- 7:21Speaker 3: So I'm just going to be open minded on that.
- 7:23Speaker 2: And yes, of course, you know, get to five hundred
- 7:28Speaker 2: is unbelievable, but you know I didn't plan to get
- 7:31Speaker 2: to five hundred when I was on my doct days.
- 7:34Speaker 2: It's just me being winning the division every year and
- 7:38Speaker 2: being successful got me to so many safes. So of
- 7:41Speaker 2: course it will be something awesome to have, but you know,
- 7:45Speaker 2: I think more awesome to have an it's another ring.
- 7:48Speaker 6: Kenly.
- 7:49Speaker 5: By the way, we just showed a picture of you
- 7:50Speaker 5: at Tiger Stadium. I'm so old. I played in old
- 7:52Speaker 5: Tiger Stadium, so you were you were there after they
- 7:54Speaker 5: had like knocked down half of the half of it.
- 7:56Speaker 5: I actually got to play there. I don't wish that
- 7:58Speaker 5: upon anybody, because it was that.
- 7:59Speaker 6: You're taller than I am.
- 8:01Speaker 5: You would have had to squat like a catcher in
- 8:03Speaker 5: the dugout because if you were over like five eight,
- 8:05Speaker 5: you hit your head on the dugout.
- 8:07Speaker 6: Yeah, God forbid. If something exciting.
- 8:09Speaker 5: Happened, you actually were like, yeah, oh gosh, I'm concussed
- 8:12Speaker 5: now what that's great? I want to know, are you
- 8:15Speaker 5: gonna bring California Love to Detroit? Did you know Anaheim
- 8:19Speaker 5: with you? Or is that just the LA thing?
- 8:22Speaker 2: I think I think California Love. I think it should
- 8:24Speaker 2: be an LA thing. I believe you know that song
- 8:26Speaker 2: is so you know, dodgy community.
- 8:29Speaker 3: I feel like, but.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean this is a great song. And you
- 8:36Speaker 2: know last year I had in the Stone within the Fire.
- 8:38Speaker 2: So I don't know, man, I even think about any
- 8:41Speaker 2: songs yet.
- 8:42Speaker 3: So we'll figure out.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we forgot. We go to EM and M,
- 8:47Speaker 2: so you know, we'll figure that out. So definitely, all.
- 8:51Speaker 4: Right, you have four hundred and seventy six says for
- 8:54Speaker 4: everybody who's listening. Mo Had has six fifty two and
- 8:58Speaker 4: Hoffman has six oh one. You are four years behind
- 9:03Speaker 4: where Hoffman pitched his last game. Are those numbers when
- 9:07Speaker 4: you look at them, insurmountable in your mind? Or you like,
- 9:13Speaker 4: I think I can do it. I think I can
- 9:14Speaker 4: get there because five hundred is right on the crust,
- 9:17Speaker 4: right right right on the cusp, Lee Smith, You're right
- 9:19Speaker 4: on the cusp, and I get it, health and everything
- 9:22Speaker 4: and Lord willing, you're able to do that stuff. But
- 9:24Speaker 4: do those numbers sound insurmountable or is it kind of
- 9:29Speaker 4: like I'm gonna get there?
- 9:31Speaker 2: I think I can get there, be honest with you,
- 9:33Speaker 2: like me being competitive, you know, put really good, you
- 9:36Speaker 2: know of workout in off seasons and taking care of myself.
- 9:40Speaker 2: I think I can get there. Like that's that's the
- 9:41Speaker 2: competitive feeling that I have. So well I get there.
- 9:46Speaker 2: I don't know, you know, it depends on, you know,
- 9:48Speaker 2: the understanding that the game change now you don't have
- 9:52Speaker 2: you know, that old fashion a lot no more in baseball,
- 9:55Speaker 2: and you know you just gotta you know, go with
- 9:58Speaker 2: that also too. But if you ask me truly, yes,
- 10:01Speaker 2: of course I think I can get to six hundred.
- 10:03Speaker 2: But you know, hell it's going to play a big role,
- 10:05Speaker 2: and you know, being the winning team is going to
- 10:08Speaker 2: play a big role.
- 10:09Speaker 3: So yes, for sure, if something individually, I think I can.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Get there for sure, Kenny, I know that you are, obviously,
- 10:20Speaker 1: as we've talked about it, so close to potentially get
- 10:22Speaker 1: into Cooperstown. That may not have been your goal when
- 10:25Speaker 1: you were growing up and curious how you know, trying
- 10:27Speaker 1: to get to the great leagues. But you have an
- 10:29Speaker 1: opportunity to do something very special. But how do you
- 10:32Speaker 1: think your game has changed or your mindset has changed
- 10:35Speaker 1: over the course of you know, when you started as
- 10:38Speaker 1: a catcher to being a potential Hall of Fame pitcher.
- 10:43Speaker 2: It's crazy because everything happens so fast. You know, from
- 10:47Speaker 2: being a catcher struggling with with hitting a little bit,
- 10:51Speaker 2: knowing that I could have had pretty good at the
- 10:53Speaker 2: defense as a catcher, but the hitting was always a problem.
- 10:58Speaker 2: And you know, for that transition to happen in nine
- 11:03Speaker 2: for me being the Baseball Classic, you know, throwing Willy
- 11:06Speaker 2: Tavarus out at third and you know Ryan Brown is second,
- 11:11Speaker 2: and you know from there, like you know, Dijon at
- 11:15Speaker 2: that time with the Dodgers, the front director, make that decision.
- 11:19Speaker 2: It happened so fast because he told me that, hey,
- 11:22Speaker 2: he believed that I could be there in a couple
- 11:23Speaker 2: of years, you know, with the arm that I have,
- 11:25Speaker 2: and you know, if I you know, develop myself and
- 11:29Speaker 2: I think possibility, you can get there. And it happens
- 11:31Speaker 2: so fast. In less than the year. I'm in the
- 11:32Speaker 2: big leagues and you know I'm still doing it so far.
- 11:37Speaker 2: So you know it's a great ride. And you know,
- 11:40Speaker 2: to hear my name up there now, it is unbelievable
- 11:43Speaker 2: and it's just gave me the motivation to keep going.
- 11:47Speaker 5: Kenley before, I have two questions for you. One, as
- 11:50Speaker 5: the former catcher that you were, what would you tell
- 11:53Speaker 5: yourself as a pitcher when guys are stealing bases off
- 11:56Speaker 5: you like they do? Would you be yelling at yourself saying, damn,
- 12:00Speaker 5: can you need to hurry up to give me a chance?
- 12:01Speaker 6: Or what?
- 12:03Speaker 3: You know?
- 12:04Speaker 2: Charlie Hoff told me one thing and that helped me terrific.
- 12:08Speaker 2: And by the way, like he make me who I
- 12:10Speaker 2: am today because he brings such a joy in pitching
- 12:13Speaker 2: for me. You can steal second, you can steal third,
- 12:16Speaker 2: but you can steal home. So I feel bad for
- 12:19Speaker 2: the catchers, but you know the confidence that I carry sometimes,
- 12:22Speaker 2: you know, it helped me a lot because you know,
- 12:25Speaker 2: I'd rather trade based runner for you know, a pitch
- 12:30Speaker 2: that I can leave something right down the middle and
- 12:33Speaker 2: get crushed. So I'd rather make my best pitch and
- 12:36Speaker 2: you know, try to hold hold the runner. But now
- 12:39Speaker 2: you can hold it no more. So yeah, you gotta,
- 12:44Speaker 2: you gotta, you gotta throw your best pitch all the
- 12:46Speaker 2: time in situation like that, give him the line so
- 12:49Speaker 2: you know you can't, you know, try to keep the
- 12:52Speaker 2: runner first and and try to be fast, quick, quick
- 12:55Speaker 2: move and then you leave a terrible pitch and it
- 12:57Speaker 2: get crushed, so it doesn't do you great either. So yeah,
- 13:01Speaker 2: so that's why I will always say you can still second, case,
- 13:03Speaker 2: still third, but try to steal home.
- 13:06Speaker 5: By the way, Charlie Holfe was a knuckleballer, so he
- 13:08Speaker 5: wasn't teaching you nothing about nothing, because.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Yeah, no, but he brings he brings that joy.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Man, he brings that joy, that fun, you know, putting
- 13:17Speaker 2: Nola Ryant pictures on the wall and Roger Klamers are
- 13:20Speaker 2: all the great pictures. And you know, learning the delivery
- 13:23Speaker 2: and learning how to pitch and man him. I gotta,
- 13:27Speaker 2: I gotta say things to him. And Franklin stuffs the
- 13:29Speaker 2: hitting coach at that time in hya. You know, those
- 13:32Speaker 2: guys just keep motivating and you know I am I
- 13:35Speaker 2: am who I am today because of them. You know,
- 13:37Speaker 2: they're the one who just started the early version of me.
- 13:41Speaker 5: By the way, Andrew Jones going to the Hall of Fame,
- 13:45Speaker 5: Currosel like yourself, what does that mean to cure Sallians,
- 13:53Speaker 5: Nail Okay and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, that there
- 13:57Speaker 5: is somebody going from that island in to Cooperstown.
- 14:01Speaker 3: That's big man.
- 14:02Speaker 2: I mean, it's the same sensation that what he did
- 14:05Speaker 2: in nineteen eighty six, you know in the World Series
- 14:08Speaker 2: is that's the same feeling that we get now. It's
- 14:10Speaker 2: just you know, for me, it's just get that you
- 14:12Speaker 2: soak that feeling in again. It's like you know, always
- 14:15Speaker 2: growing up me growing up a Brace fan before him,
- 14:18Speaker 2: you know, big Fred mcgraer fan, by the way. And
- 14:22Speaker 2: when Andrew got called up, you know still you know,
- 14:26Speaker 2: it was crazy. It was crazy watching him get his
- 14:29Speaker 2: first hit against the Pheelies. I believe, yes, And you
- 14:33Speaker 2: know it's NLCS game against the Cardinals and get to
- 14:38Speaker 2: the World Series hit the two homers you know in
- 14:40Speaker 2: Game one.
- 14:42Speaker 3: You know, to me, it's just make all of us believe.
- 14:45Speaker 2: And that's the feeling that I get now that now
- 14:47Speaker 2: him going to Hall of Fame, it's just give me
- 14:49Speaker 2: that belief now that who knows, you know, maybe I
- 14:52Speaker 2: could be a part of that too. So you know,
- 14:56Speaker 2: it's great watching him and it just made me so happy.
- 14:58Speaker 2: And yeah, one of the greatest probably you know, defensively
- 15:03Speaker 2: center field, I've ever done it. You know, play so
- 15:05Speaker 2: shallow and make every every play routine. So yeah, it's
- 15:09Speaker 2: a blessing watching him play back in the days. And
- 15:12Speaker 2: you know he said the it's you know, he paid,
- 15:15Speaker 2: He paved the way for us, set the stone for us.
- 15:17Speaker 2: And now you know, a lot a lot more players
- 15:20Speaker 2: from cures I'll get to enjoy, you know, their dream
- 15:22Speaker 2: and playing in such a level in Major League.
- 15:25Speaker 4: Okay, three three parts here. First of all, Bam, Bam
- 15:29Speaker 4: Hensley Mullins, he paved the way. Make sure you don't
- 15:32Speaker 4: say it was Andrew, because he taught Andrew. He will
- 15:35Speaker 4: be pissed at you if he heard you say.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Understand that, hey like the first one and got there,
- 15:40Speaker 2: you know, so, but you know, I think you know
- 15:44Speaker 2: it's it's it's iconic and Jones is just such an
- 15:46Speaker 2: iconic man what he did, so I'm definitely not gonna
- 15:50Speaker 2: you know, like I have to thank Bam bam for
- 15:53Speaker 2: all those years that you know they said baseball clinics.
- 15:56Speaker 2: You know, back then I was little going to those
- 15:58Speaker 2: clinics and you know, see guys like Andrew and you
- 16:02Speaker 2: know more Goush can major league you know, be there,
- 16:05Speaker 2: and yeah, he helped contribute big time. But you know,
- 16:09Speaker 2: Andrew is such an iconic player that, you know, make
- 16:13Speaker 2: all of us believe, you know, with with with his
- 16:15Speaker 2: sensation that he did diving catch and right field and
- 16:20Speaker 2: I forgot the name why now of the Braves stadium
- 16:24Speaker 2: right now? But yeah, he was great. Man, he was great.
- 16:29Speaker 2: He's such an iconic player for Austin KASA and you know,
- 16:32Speaker 2: he make us believe.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Turner Field all right?
- 16:35Speaker 6: Two part questions?
- 16:37Speaker 3: What's Full County Stadium?
- 16:38Speaker 4: Sorry, Fulton County Stadium? So before Turner Field before two
- 16:42Speaker 4: part question? Can you confirm that you are pitching for
- 16:46Speaker 4: the Netherlands? Confirm or deny?
