- 0:00Dot com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:06kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm our host Andrew McGivern. For September 21st, today is
- 0:13International Day of Peace, also known as World Peace Day, the
- 0:17United Nations sanctioned holiday that has been observed
- 0:20annually since 1982. Established by the UN General
- 0:25Assembly in 1981, this day is dedicated to World Peace and
- 0:30specifically the absence of war and violence.
- 0:34What makes this day particularly meaningful is the tradition that
- 0:38marks its beginning each year at UN Headquarters in New York
- 0:43City, New York City, the UN Peace Bell is rung to inaugurate
- 0:49the day. This bell, cast from coins
- 0:53donated by children from around the world, represents hope and
- 0:57the collective desire for peace that transcends borders and
- 1:01cultures. The day calls for a temporary
- 1:04ceasefire in combat zones to allow humanitarian aid access,
- 1:09but its deeper purpose is to encourage all of us, nations,
- 1:13communities and individuals to set aside differences and commit
- 1:17to making peace not just in the world, but in our daily lives.
- 1:24Today's quote comes from Mother Teresa, who once said peace
- 1:30begins with a smile. Mother Teresa's simple yet
- 1:34profound observation captures something essential about
- 1:37International Day of Peace. While we often think that peace
- 1:42is this grand global concept requiring treaties and
- 1:46diplomacies, she reminds us that peace actually starts in the
- 1:50smallest, most personal moments. A smile is such a basic human
- 1:56gesture, yet it has remarkable power.
- 2:00It costs nothing to give but can transform someone's entire day.
- 2:06It crosses language barriers, cultural differences, and
- 2:10political divides. When we smile at someone,
- 2:14genuinely smile, we're offering them a moment of recognition,
- 2:18warmth, and connection. Think about how this works in
- 2:22your own life. That moment of tension with a
- 2:25colleague that dissolves when someone smiles the way a
- 2:30stranger smiles on a difficult day.
- 2:33It can uplift your spirits. The peace that settles over a
- 2:38room when people choose warmth over coldness, understanding
- 2:43over judgment. International Day of Peace
- 2:46reminds us that World Peace isn't just about ending wars.
- 2:50It's about creating a culture where peace becomes our default
- 2:54response to one another, and that culture begins with small
- 2:58acts of kindness and connection that each of us can offer every
- 3:02day. And it's more and more difficult
- 3:05to do this with the polarization of society, especially in the
- 3:10United States and other areas of the world where we've got
- 3:13political polarization that is causing us to lose the ability
- 3:18to communicate without triggering someone.
- 3:22So as you go about your day, consider how you might
- 3:24contribute to International Day of Peace through this simple act
- 3:29of bringing more warmth and kindness to your intentions.
- 3:34You don't need to solve global conflicts or mediate
- 3:37international disputes. Maybe it's offering a genuine
- 3:41smile to the barista making your coffee.
- 3:44Maybe it's choosing patience over frustration when someone
- 3:47cuts you off in traffic. Maybe it's reaching out to a
- 3:51friend or a family member you've been meaning to connect with.
- 3:56Or maybe it's not getting angry when someone has a different
- 3:59political view than you. Maybe it's accepting other
- 4:03people's viewpoints and not getting angry when they're
- 4:07different. Peace isn't just absence of
- 4:10conflict. It's the presence of kindness,
- 4:12understanding and connection. Every smile, every patient
- 4:17response, every moment of choosing love over fear
- 4:21contributes to the kind of world we want to live in.
- 4:24That's going to do it. For today, I'm Anna McGivern,
- 4:27signing off for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:32Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
