Latest / Richard Randall Show / Rep. Jeff Crank on Housing Market Relief
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Prichard Randall is on Colorado set the show with Congress
- 0:07Speaker 1: and Jeff Crank joining US representative. Does that carry a
- 0:11Speaker 1: piece by you talking about something I think is really
- 0:14Speaker 1: important nationally but here in Colorado as well, and that
- 0:17Speaker 1: is housing. The American dream is to own a home
- 0:20Speaker 1: or at least live in something that is affordable. You've
- 0:24Speaker 1: got plans on how to remedy some of that, Jeff Crank.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Well, thank you, Richard. Yeah, we just introduced a bill,
- 0:32Speaker 2: and I'm really proud of it. It's called the Framer Act,
- 0:35Speaker 2: and essentially what it does is we've got states like
- 0:39Speaker 2: Colorado that are putting these these sort of crazy energy
- 0:44Speaker 2: mandates into homes, which lot which force home builders all
- 0:49Speaker 2: across the state to build to a higher energy standard
- 0:55Speaker 2: than the federal government requires through the Housing and Urban
- 0:58Speaker 2: Development Department. So that drives up the cost. That drives
- 1:04Speaker 2: up the cost of houses, and we're seeing it in Colorado,
- 1:07Speaker 2: particularly where our crazy state legislature passes these laws and
- 1:13Speaker 2: then with no understanding that it's going to drive up
- 1:16Speaker 2: the cost by thousands of dollars of a new home
- 1:20Speaker 2: built in Colorado. So what my bill does is, once
- 1:23Speaker 2: we get the bill passed. It will require that if
- 1:27Speaker 2: a state were to have a more stringent energy standard
- 1:33Speaker 2: for houses than the federal government has, that they the
- 1:37Speaker 2: state would be required to reimburse the builder and pass
- 1:43Speaker 2: that and then that savings would be passed on to
- 1:45Speaker 2: the home buyer. And so it's a way to help
- 1:48Speaker 2: reduce the costs of this. And it also requires that
- 1:54Speaker 2: at closing, the buyer knows how much they've saved because
- 1:59Speaker 2: of the because of this federal law, and how much
- 2:02Speaker 2: more they would have had to pay for that house
- 2:04Speaker 2: if that crazy mandate from the state would have stayed
- 2:08Speaker 2: in place. It only applies in federal opportunity zones, of
- 2:13Speaker 2: which all of downtown Colorado Springs is a federal opportunity zone.
- 2:18Speaker 2: So that's how the federal government can do this and
- 2:22Speaker 2: why the bill makes sense. But it's a way. It's not,
- 2:25Speaker 2: you know, nothing's going to automatically snap the fingers and
- 2:29Speaker 2: fix the housing problem, but it does help. It's going
- 2:33Speaker 2: to help lower the cost of houses in Colorado Springs
- 2:37Speaker 2: particularly and in Colorado, and it helps shine the light
- 2:42Speaker 2: on some of the crazy energy mandates and things that
- 2:46Speaker 2: people are putting on in our state legislature.
- 2:48Speaker 1: You know, Representative Crank. As long as I've known you,
- 2:51Speaker 1: you have been very pragmatic, and you see a problem.
- 2:55Speaker 3: You come up with a solution to it.
- 2:56Speaker 1: But more and more and more I think people realize
- 2:59Speaker 1: that you are focused on the real world. I got
- 3:01Speaker 1: some stuff coming out of state legislature, and they want
- 3:04Speaker 1: to make it harder on ice to do activities and
- 3:08Speaker 1: operations here and all of the rest.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Yeah, we're in.
- 3:11Speaker 1: This situation with housing because they prioritize something that I
- 3:15Speaker 1: honestly just don't believe that the average person out there,
- 3:17Speaker 1: if they understood what this was all going to mean,
- 3:20Speaker 1: they would never have voted for people to say, well,
- 3:22Speaker 1: we're gonna gree in everything. We're gonna make Colorado unaffordable,
- 3:25Speaker 1: and you're not even be able to rely on energy,
- 3:28Speaker 1: much less housing throughout a time.
- 3:30Speaker 2: So rich Richard, if you live in a big mansion
- 3:34Speaker 2: down in the Broadmoor area, it's probably you probably don't
- 3:38Speaker 2: care if there's an extra eight thousand dollars or so
- 3:41Speaker 2: added to your home. But to most of us who
- 3:44Speaker 2: live in Colorado Springs, you know, seven eight thousand dollars
- 3:48Speaker 2: on the cost of a home for what for an
- 3:52Speaker 2: energy mandate? That most likely over thirty years, you won't
- 3:56Speaker 2: recover that seven or eight thousand dollars in the additional
- 3:59Speaker 2: call in your home. I mean, this is and it's
- 4:02Speaker 2: also a matter of choice, right If somebody wants to
- 4:05Speaker 2: go have those higher standards for energy mandate in their house,
- 4:11Speaker 2: they can do that. But what about the rest of
- 4:13Speaker 2: us who want a cheaper house. And again, there are
- 4:18Speaker 2: much better standards now today at the federal level than
- 4:22Speaker 2: there were twenty years ago. Our houses are much more
- 4:25Speaker 2: energy efficient and they should be with new technology, and
- 4:28Speaker 2: that's great, But this is about allowing the average person
- 4:32Speaker 2: to be able to still be able to buy a
- 4:35Speaker 2: house and live the American dream. And again, there's folks
- 4:39Speaker 2: that make tons of money. Probably doesn't matter to them,
- 4:41Speaker 2: but to the average person in Colorado Springs or in
- 4:44Speaker 2: al Paso County, this bill will make a difference.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Well.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And it always seems like Democrats are like that, you know,
- 4:49Speaker 1: they don't worry about we'll make the penalties for stealing
- 4:52Speaker 1: cars less than it was before, and we'll side and
- 4:56Speaker 1: give favor to people stealing cars. But the majority of
- 4:59Speaker 1: thotes cars are being stolen from average Americans out there
- 5:02Speaker 1: who need that car to get to and from work.
- 5:05Speaker 3: You are so grounded nationally.
- 5:06Speaker 1: I'm very proud of this president because he seems, more
- 5:09Speaker 1: so than anybody in my lifetime, to understand the average American.
- 5:13Speaker 1: The average American, I don't know where it comes from.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Maybe he just knew that people are working for him
- 5:18Speaker 1: when he when he was a builder. But we have
- 5:20Speaker 1: more and more people like that in Congress, like you.
- 5:24Speaker 1: I guess I'm partisan because I don't see that. Used
- 5:26Speaker 1: to be the Democrat party looking out for the middle.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Class and the average person. It's not anymore.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Talk to me about the people that you and others
- 5:33Speaker 1: in Congress are looking out for.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Yeah, look, I mean you know I'm I tell people
- 5:39Speaker 2: all the time. I was born and raised in Pueblo.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I'm just as simple of a guy as you can get.
- 5:45Speaker 2: I drive a Ford F one fifty and you know
- 5:49Speaker 2: that's who I am and I'm not going to change.
- 5:51Speaker 2: But that's probably why I also relate to people who
- 5:54Speaker 2: do that. Right. I don't live in some big mansion somewhere.
- 5:57Speaker 2: I'm just an average guy, the that's fortunate enough to
- 6:01Speaker 2: live in the greatest country in the world and got
- 6:03Speaker 2: elected to Congress to serve my constituents, and so you know,
- 6:08Speaker 2: there's no doubt it. We have folks that don't think
- 6:11Speaker 2: about it when they pass these crazy energy mandates or
- 6:14Speaker 2: they say, oh, you have to get all of your
- 6:16Speaker 2: energy has to come from soul or wind or whatever,
- 6:19Speaker 2: you know. To them they think that's great. But to
- 6:22Speaker 2: the average citizen that just means more money coming out
- 6:25Speaker 2: of their pocket because some politician in Washington or Denver
- 6:30Speaker 2: is making the choice for them. I'm for the freedom
- 6:33Speaker 2: of people to choose what kind of energy they want
- 6:36Speaker 2: to use, what kind of car they want to drive,
- 6:38Speaker 2: those sorts of things. And you know, it really is
- 6:41Speaker 2: a defining issue between you know, between conservatives and those
- 6:46Speaker 2: big government folks on the left.
- 6:48Speaker 1: So as long as I've got you, do you have
- 6:50Speaker 1: a minute to just talk about.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Government's shut down partial shutdown.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I just can't believe you have all these Democrats over
- 6:57Speaker 1: the issue of ice, which is protecting people in neighborhoods
- 7:01Speaker 1: and in communities, they would shut the freaking government down
- 7:05Speaker 1: to look out for people in this country illegally and
- 7:08Speaker 1: committing crimes.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Yeah, it's crazy. They're choosing, They're choosing criminals over law enforcement.
- 7:15Speaker 2: And there's no way around that right. And look, Richard,
- 7:18Speaker 2: I was on your show last week in studio, and
- 7:20Speaker 2: I made it very clear we have to hold law
- 7:23Speaker 2: enforcement accountable if there were if they did something wrong
- 7:26Speaker 2: in that there should be a full and complete investigation
- 7:28Speaker 2: and people should be held accountable. We do that with
- 7:31Speaker 2: all of our law enforcement, and we should always do that.
- 7:34Speaker 2: People in law enforcement need to respect the civil rights
- 7:38Speaker 2: of American citizens and others, right, but that's exactly what
- 7:43Speaker 2: they're doing. We're going to get it solved today. There
- 7:45Speaker 2: are adults in the room. I think we will pass
- 7:48Speaker 2: the bill this afternoon or this evening and send it
- 7:51Speaker 2: to the President that will fund all of the government,
- 7:54Speaker 2: accept homeland security, which the President is negotiating with some
- 8:00Speaker 2: folks for a two week continuing resolution so that homeland
- 8:05Speaker 2: security appropriations go, which includes, by the way, not just
- 8:09Speaker 2: Homeland Security and ICE and Customs and Border Patrol, but
- 8:13Speaker 2: it also includes FEMA, the TSA, so all of our
- 8:17Speaker 2: air traffic or I'm sorry, all of our TSA workers
- 8:21Speaker 2: at airports. All of that stuff's going to be for
- 8:24Speaker 2: two weeks from now, but everything else, paying our soldiers.
- 8:28Speaker 2: We're going to get that done today, and I hope
- 8:31Speaker 2: that people remember who were the responsible legislators who made
- 8:37Speaker 2: sure that we pay our men and women who support
- 8:40Speaker 2: us each and every day by fighting for us across
- 8:44Speaker 2: this globe and defending our freedom.
- 8:46Speaker 1: A lot of these votes are very narrow. Sometimes vans
- 8:50Speaker 1: has to get involved. Sometimes it's only Republicans voting this
- 8:53Speaker 1: way or that way. How much of a difference would
- 8:56Speaker 1: it make in the future if instead of a person
- 8:59Speaker 1: like you representing the district, you are to have a
- 9:02Speaker 1: Democrat representing that district. That would change the numbers and
- 9:05Speaker 1: what is being done in Washington?
- 9:07Speaker 2: Yeah, no question we have As of last night, we
- 9:11Speaker 2: swore in a new Democrat member from Texas. So we
- 9:14Speaker 2: now can lose the grand sum of one vote in
- 9:17Speaker 2: the House one Republican, and if we lose more than
- 9:22Speaker 2: one Republican, we lose two Republicans. We can't pass a
- 9:25Speaker 2: rule in the House or get anything done. So it's imperative.
- 9:28Speaker 2: This is a team sport, and you know, we all
- 9:31Speaker 2: we got a bunch of people here. They all have
- 9:33Speaker 2: egos and sometimes they think they know better than leadership
- 9:38Speaker 2: and things like that. But it's a team sport. We
- 9:40Speaker 2: either stick together or we're going to fail together. But
- 9:45Speaker 2: I believe today we're going to come together. We're going
- 9:47Speaker 2: to pass this rule by one vote. We'll pass the rule,
- 9:51Speaker 2: and then that will allow us to bring the bill
- 9:53Speaker 2: up and we will we will pass it by a
- 9:56Speaker 2: wider margin. I believe then we'll have some Democrats that
- 9:59Speaker 2: cross over and do the right thing, but not very
- 10:02Speaker 2: many because they want to fight. They want to side
- 10:05Speaker 2: with the criminals that romar streets rather than law enforcement
- 10:10Speaker 2: on this one.
- 10:10Speaker 1: God bless you, Thank you so much. I'll let you
- 10:12Speaker 1: get back to work of the public and the people
- 10:15Speaker 1: you represent out here, and even the people didn't vote
- 10:17Speaker 1: for you, but you're representing everybody. I'll go ahead and
- 10:20Speaker 1: put a link over people can read about the frame
- 10:23Speaker 1: or act on your website. I'll tell them about the
- 10:25Speaker 1: newsletter as well. God bless you anything before I let
- 10:27Speaker 1: you go.
- 10:28Speaker 3: Jeff Crank No.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Thanks for all you do, Richard. I appreciate It's an
- 10:31Speaker 2: honor to be back here and serve. And I'm going
- 10:33Speaker 2: to be back here till Thursday and then heading back
- 10:37Speaker 2: home and we'll be back this weekend.
- 10:39Speaker 3: So God bless you you do. God bless you.
- 10:41Speaker 1: You know. I gotta tell you what I've known him
- 10:43Speaker 1: for a long time, and this comment does not come
- 10:46Speaker 1: because I've known him for a long time as a
- 10:49Speaker 1: friend or anything and coworker, etc. There are a lot
- 10:52Speaker 1: of politicians that you meet when you do what I do,
- 10:55Speaker 1: and they come up at various levels, sometimes presidents, sometimes
- 10:59Speaker 1: you know, Congress, everything, including people who are county commissioners,
- 11:05Speaker 1: city council, et cetera. He is one of the hardest
- 11:08Speaker 1: working and yet most humble people that I know. That
- 11:12Speaker 1: That's not some you know, because sometimes people pretend to
- 11:15Speaker 1: be folks, see and they pretend to be humble. I
- 11:18Speaker 1: can tell you right now, well you just heard. That's
- 11:21Speaker 1: what you get. That's who the man really is. And
- 11:24Speaker 1: why is he so busy? Is it just that he's
- 11:26Speaker 1: got nothing better to do. He can be upgoing hunting
- 11:29Speaker 1: or something like that. Trust me, it's because he cares
- 11:31Speaker 1: about so many different things. And I think you understand
- 11:36Speaker 1: where he's getting at at the end of that interview,
- 11:38Speaker 1: and that is if Jeff weren't there, and you were
- 11:40Speaker 1: to have a Democrat there, it would be very very
- 11:44Speaker 1: difficult for the president and his agenda.
- 11:47Speaker 3: And it is America. First, Let's take a short break
