Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / ITB: Is Safety Really The Only Concern About The Eagles' Defense?
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back.
- 0:13Speaker 2: What's up, everybody. It's Adam Kaplan, It's Jeff Mosher.
- 0:16Speaker 1: We are here to finish our two part podcast series
- 0:20Speaker 1: on things that we are either concerned about maybe skeptical about.
- 0:24Speaker 1: In twenty twenty six, we did Offense last podcast, we
- 0:28Speaker 1: finished it off with Defense, and we're gonna switch up
- 0:31Speaker 1: the format a little bit. Adam and I will talk
- 0:34Speaker 1: this thing out because for the last three the optimism
- 0:37Speaker 1: and the pessimism or skepticism, whatever you want to call it,
- 0:40Speaker 1: we've kind of given three either players coaches concepts of
- 0:45Speaker 1: each and honestly, this defense, Adam, is so good from
- 0:49Speaker 1: top to bottom that it would be hard for us
- 0:51Speaker 1: to sit here and just go back and forth with
- 0:52Speaker 1: all these things that we have tremendous concern or skepticism about.
- 0:57Speaker 1: But we do have some things that we wanted to
- 0:59Speaker 1: discuss about.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Well, let me ask you this, let me get let
- 1:01Speaker 3: me get started with this. Okay, this was not, you know,
- 1:04Speaker 3: in the email I sent you. This was not in
- 1:06Speaker 3: the email. But I've been thinking about this lately. Okay,
- 1:09Speaker 3: and we'll see what Drew Roseenos does with Drew Jalen
- 1:11Speaker 3: Carter to start training camp and Jeffrey Simmons doesn't have Drew.
- 1:16Speaker 3: He's got I think I think he's got Todd Frans.
- 1:19Speaker 3: But so obviously Drew's seeing that deal. Jeffrey Simmons.
- 1:25Speaker 2: That did that deal maybe.
- 1:28Speaker 3: A yeah, as a matter of fact, it's on his
- 1:30Speaker 3: I g. Because he's with athletes first, then you know
- 1:32Speaker 3: they yeah, they put it up there. But he's got
- 1:37Speaker 3: He's gonna look at that deal. We're gonna see if
- 1:38Speaker 3: there's a hold in or whatever. We're gonna see if
- 1:40Speaker 3: he what he does. But that I'm not concerned about
- 1:44Speaker 3: Jaalen Carter playing this season. He's gonna play. Guys don't
- 1:47Speaker 3: miss paychecks. The issue is physically, how's he going to
- 1:52Speaker 3: hold up? Uh? Where are you at with him? With
- 1:55Speaker 3: the show talk about this he was drafted.
- 1:57Speaker 1: That's a really good question because actually when last week
- 2:02Speaker 1: was the last week, the week.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Before, I don't know, days go by.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Andrew and I the pod on just our biggest question
- 2:08Speaker 1: marks overall.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Not necessarily offense, even just going into.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Training camp, what questions we have, and one of ours
- 2:14Speaker 1: was just the just the situation about Joe and Carter.
- 2:19Speaker 1: I think it's definitely valid to be concerned about where
- 2:23Speaker 1: his head state's gonna be Is he holding in as
- 2:25Speaker 1: you mentioned, If he does, all the questions, Uh, Egles
- 2:28Speaker 1: really haven't dealt with that kind of a situation before.
- 2:31Speaker 1: I guess did Hassan Reddick hold in a couple of
- 2:33Speaker 1: years ago. If he did, it wasn't that he.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Just was a weird one. Yeah, with the Eagles we're
- 2:38Speaker 3: talking about.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Yeah, when he wanted more money, right, Yeah, he never
- 2:41Speaker 2: got his deal.
- 2:43Speaker 3: They weren't going to extend him, as we report at
- 2:45Speaker 3: the time. They just were not what he was looking for.
- 2:49Speaker 3: They weren't willing to do and it was kind of
- 2:52Speaker 3: a non starters as we understood at the time.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and he reported camp, he played, he didn't he
- 2:57Speaker 2: didn't like do anything out.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Of the remember, I honestly don't remember. There's you know,
- 3:02Speaker 3: it's just that one that was that was one of
- 3:05Speaker 3: the more odd ones. Then you know that he was
- 3:07Speaker 3: told the Jets he was going to report and he didn't, right,
- 3:11Speaker 3: you know, and that that was the list of that situation.
- 3:14Speaker 3: His career is you know, it's done, have much left unfortunately, right.
- 3:18Speaker 1: So, Yeah, I do think just because the vibes have
- 3:22Speaker 1: been pretty good for the Eagles of Camp they haven't
- 3:24Speaker 1: had too many major distractions something to he or something there,
- 3:26Speaker 1: but that would be a little bit of a dour away.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I guess to start camp if if one of your
- 3:32Speaker 1: best players is holding in and then all the question marks,
- 3:35Speaker 1: and then I think when you fold into that, Adam
- 3:39Speaker 1: the because one of my concerns that I put will
- 3:42Speaker 1: get into in a second when when you fold into
- 3:44Speaker 1: that the health of his shoulders, which you know, you
- 3:48Speaker 1: know all off season on but did not have surgery
- 3:51Speaker 1: to repair. And I do remember speaking to some orthopedis,
- 3:55Speaker 1: some sports orthopedists last year when he went to the
- 3:58Speaker 1: PRPs H treatments. They all felt that it was you know,
- 4:03Speaker 1: prp can only give you temporary relief. There's really no
- 4:06Speaker 1: empirical evidence that says that it definitely works in the
- 4:09Speaker 1: first place. And they all they figured without these guys
- 4:13Speaker 1: didn't work on on Carter, but they figured he would
- 4:16Speaker 1: probably have to have them surgically taken care of in
- 4:19Speaker 1: the off.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Season, and he did not.
- 4:22Speaker 1: So the whole like how we don't if he's not
- 4:26Speaker 1: out there practicing, and then we're not gonna be able
- 4:28Speaker 1: to see how his shoulders are and what kind of impact.
- 4:31Speaker 2: He's having yeah, he wasn't last year. That's not debatable.
- 4:35Speaker 3: He wasn't fell off. I don't Joko was selling there's
- 4:39Speaker 3: not a comparable contract because they what just folks, just
- 4:43Speaker 3: so folks know out there. The way it works is
- 4:45Speaker 3: with contracts, clubs agents. They find comparable contracts, usually agents,
- 4:51Speaker 3: but they the clubs have to know. The clubs know.
- 4:53Speaker 3: They have access to numbers and tape about who where
- 4:56Speaker 3: the guys had in his career. So if you're Rosenhauser,
- 5:00Speaker 3: don't want cheofre Simms contract, you might as well ask
- 5:01Speaker 3: for the sky. Doesn't mean you're going to get it,
- 5:03Speaker 3: and I for you're the Eagles. Well, unfortunately there's not
- 5:05Speaker 3: comparable contract with guy having two banded shoulders. I don't
- 5:09Speaker 3: know how you come up with a number that. I
- 5:12Speaker 3: don't know. We're still ways away, but three weeks away.
- 5:16Speaker 3: It's just it's a tough deal man, I don't know.
- 5:18Speaker 3: But just getting back to what this is about, concerns
- 5:22Speaker 3: of the shoulders, absolutely not. This is not This has
- 5:26Speaker 3: nothing to do with being skeptic of anything. That was
- 5:29Speaker 3: the other show of some of our other shows. This
- 5:31Speaker 3: is seriously concerned. We we talked about this for people
- 5:34Speaker 3: new to our show, our reporting, we said, everything we've
- 5:37Speaker 3: been hearing about Carter is dominant player. Everybody knows about
- 5:40Speaker 3: the off the field stuff, but what we heard is medical.
- 5:43Speaker 3: These guys shoulder. We didn't know about both shoulders. That
- 5:45Speaker 3: that's that was news to us. We were told he
- 5:48Speaker 3: would have a chronic shoulder issue. It wouldn't necessarily hurt
- 5:52Speaker 3: his career ships of length, but it could miss time
- 5:55Speaker 3: with it, which he has, and it was he he's
- 6:00Speaker 3: just gonna be nagging. He's had to deal with it,
- 6:01Speaker 3: and he's done a good job of getting through it.
- 6:03Speaker 3: But last year, as you said, you're right, it was
- 6:04Speaker 3: a down year for him. I just don't know how
- 6:07Speaker 3: you extend off of it. But let's just stay on
- 6:08Speaker 3: the matter at hand. Going into training camp in the season,
- 6:12Speaker 3: I'd be concerned about him being even close to the
- 6:15Speaker 3: player was we have no idea. I don't know how
- 6:17Speaker 3: anyone has any idea.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean obviously the Eagles are. They get more
- 6:21Speaker 2: information than we do. They're there.
- 6:23Speaker 3: They know.
- 6:24Speaker 2: You don't want to Overrea.
- 6:25Speaker 1: You don't want to be like the Titans trading AJ
- 6:27Speaker 1: Brown just because you think his knees will never hold up.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And then you see Aj Brown go and have two
- 6:32Speaker 1: amazing years and four really good overall years. So you know,
- 6:35Speaker 1: if you're the Eagles, you got to be you have
- 6:37Speaker 1: to be diplomatic about it. You have to understand what
- 6:40Speaker 1: you're getting into, but also not necessarily panic and say
- 6:43Speaker 1: this guy's not going to be able to play for us.
- 6:44Speaker 2: You've got to be.
- 6:45Speaker 3: You can't and you cannot worry about what the media
- 6:48Speaker 3: or fans think. For the fans who want to pick harder,
- 6:51Speaker 3: can't listen to them. You just can't. It's whatever you
- 6:54Speaker 3: just nailed it. Whatever your medical information gives you from
- 6:58Speaker 3: your staff, whether it's specialists, kind of where do you
- 7:02Speaker 3: think he because what you base say an extension on,
- 7:06Speaker 3: is where you think he's going in the future. You
- 7:09Speaker 3: have what what gets you the table's performance. Obviously, you
- 7:13Speaker 3: don't just walk out of the you know we're gonna
- 7:14Speaker 3: pay the scott for He's never done that. No, you
- 7:16Speaker 3: you based on what he's done. But then to finish it,
- 7:21Speaker 3: it's what you think he's going to do in the future.
- 7:23Speaker 3: I just don't know how you know how how great
- 7:25Speaker 3: he's going to be hit. I just don't.
- 7:27Speaker 2: It's tough. It's a very tough call.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And uh, you know, the Eagles like to be ahead
- 7:31Speaker 1: of situations, but they certainly have this year and the
- 7:34Speaker 1: fifth year option. If they want to take their time,
- 7:37Speaker 1: which they could obviously, then that makes the player in
- 7:39Speaker 1: the agent mad and then things happen. But again, the
- 7:42Speaker 1: Eagles have the leverage in this situation, so uh, and
- 7:46Speaker 1: not only that, if they even even if Carter decided
- 7:50Speaker 1: to exercise what he thinks his leverage and hold in
- 7:53Speaker 1: or not play and cost him self money, the Eagles
- 7:56Speaker 1: got talent at that position, so they they can win
- 7:59Speaker 1: games without Jail and Carter.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Now they're much better.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Not yeah the elite.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean here's but I'm saying, like if they
- 8:08Speaker 1: want to, if they if this really came to a head,
- 8:11Speaker 1: but these aren't just going to cave and say we
- 8:13Speaker 1: are nothing without you.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Well it's just different. Just long term, if by shock
- 8:20Speaker 3: this he holds out and it goes into the season
- 8:24Speaker 3: like these things, I mean four out of like thousands
- 8:27Speaker 3: of players do this, it just doesn't happen. It's too
- 8:29Speaker 3: much money you're giving up. Just so you know, now
- 8:32Speaker 3: I understand from rosenh alison Cars perspective, he's only making
- 8:37Speaker 3: just over three point seven million. I know he had
- 8:40Speaker 3: a down year, but come on, he's he's should be
- 8:42Speaker 3: being he should be paid more than that. But and
- 8:44Speaker 3: I know I saw the YouTube comments when we first
- 8:46Speaker 3: talked about this week's ago. I respect the comments that say, hey,
- 8:50Speaker 3: you agree to this deal, you sign it, you play
- 8:52Speaker 3: for it. I get that. I have no problem and
- 8:56Speaker 3: whether it's the people involved with money with Eagles, Don Spilenski,
- 8:59Speaker 3: Julian Laurie, as we've been telling people for years, Julie Howland,
- 9:01Speaker 3: Bobby is in money. I was a Jeffrey who signed
- 9:05Speaker 3: the checks. He's obviously very involved.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know.
- 9:09Speaker 3: I don't know where you go. I don't know. It's
- 9:11Speaker 3: a tough deal man.
- 9:12Speaker 1: It's sometimes I go down rabbit holes and I think
- 9:14Speaker 1: it like like, so he's guaranteed because of the fifth
- 9:17Speaker 1: year option.
- 9:17Speaker 2: He is guaranteed. I think, what twenty six million, I
- 9:21Speaker 2: don't know.
- 9:21Speaker 3: I don't have it in front of me. I just
- 9:23Speaker 3: know this year is twenty six is the fourth year
- 9:27Speaker 3: they exercised the fifth option. Obviously, he's only making with
- 9:31Speaker 3: his base salary plus his his roster bonus is fifth
- 9:37Speaker 3: day of of the league year. Roster bonus just equals
- 9:41Speaker 3: over just over thirty three point seven million, not a
- 9:45Speaker 3: lot of money, not a lot of money. And yeah,
- 9:48Speaker 3: and we'll get again this is not this is not
- 9:50Speaker 3: that we didn't want to get into the contracts, but
- 9:52Speaker 3: you kind of have to when you talking about But
- 9:55Speaker 3: the big thing is the shoulders man, which is tied
- 9:58Speaker 3: of the contract. That's what we're talking about. It just
- 10:00Speaker 3: I don't know. Yeah, yes, they have some depth by Bayern.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Young's a nice player, but he's not jailing Carter. Jalen
- 10:07Speaker 3: Carter is a home wrecker when he's healthy. There's truly
- 10:10Speaker 3: no Jeffery Simms is a great player, yes, and Jeffrey
- 10:14Speaker 3: Simms overall has been better because you're including next year,
- 10:17Speaker 3: but nobody, there's no defensive tackle like Jalen Carter. He's
- 10:21Speaker 3: just special when he's healthy.
- 10:23Speaker 1: But at his best, I do believe, you know, he's
- 10:26Speaker 1: played so violently that and just with so much I
- 10:32Speaker 1: don't know what the word is.
- 10:33Speaker 2: I mean, I think violently is the best word.
- 10:34Speaker 1: That he's He's a game changer and a game wrecker
- 10:36Speaker 1: when he wants to be, you know, like he's in
- 10:38Speaker 1: that essule when he is at his best. But he
- 10:42Speaker 1: hasn't been, so that that Taylor's into one of my
- 10:45Speaker 1: mild concerns about the Eagles in twenty twenty six defensively,
- 10:50Speaker 1: and that is and this is sort of also based
- 10:53Speaker 1: on what we saw last year. It's that they showed,
- 10:58Speaker 1: I don't want to say, a tendency like an occasional
- 11:00Speaker 1: tendency to just let down in run defense. That was
- 11:03Speaker 1: an achilles heel for them at times last year. And
- 11:07Speaker 1: they're going to play some teams this year, the Bears again,
- 11:11Speaker 1: the Rams, is it, the Seahawks there, They're going to
- 11:14Speaker 1: play some run foundationally run oriented teams coming up this year,
- 11:19Speaker 1: and they can't have lapses like they did. And it's
- 11:23Speaker 1: not just lapses, right because you're not just talking about
- 11:26Speaker 1: Jille and Carter and the shoulders. You're a little lighter
- 11:29Speaker 1: on the edges, you know. John Phillips, I don't I
- 11:32Speaker 1: don't know if there's a huge difference between how he's.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Built and the way Grenard is built. Oh, he's actually
- 11:38Speaker 2: look at my body size though I'm saying no, the frame.
- 11:42Speaker 3: Is bigger he is, Phillips. His body beautiful. He looks
- 11:47Speaker 3: like to get out of granite. Yep, you know that
- 11:50Speaker 3: that's the difference is the frame.
- 11:52Speaker 1: And then of course you go to linebacker and you
- 11:54Speaker 1: now don't have Ni Kobe Dean, and you put JOHB.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Campbell in and Jahad being a downhill run stop or
- 12:00Speaker 1: was not as not as good year one as Nikobe has.
- 12:03Speaker 2: So if you put those three things.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Together, Carter shoulders the edges and John Campbell in there,
- 12:08Speaker 1: and then you can throw I don't know if you
- 12:11Speaker 1: want to.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Throw safety in there, but mccoob is obviously late.
- 12:14Speaker 1: So I mean the gene will be the guy when
- 12:16Speaker 1: they're in base that comes into the box to make
- 12:18Speaker 1: the tackle almost all the time, and I'm fine with that.
- 12:22Speaker 1: But in general, I just think this team's got to
- 12:24Speaker 1: be a little bit tighter in run defense, and they
- 12:27Speaker 1: can't have leftowns like they had last year.
- 12:29Speaker 3: All right, on your point, Week three, we know it's
- 12:31Speaker 3: coming at Chicago. That was the game the Bears had
- 12:35Speaker 3: two to one hundred yard rushers in the first half. Okay,
- 12:38Speaker 3: a bad team record. That was when Carter's shoulder is bad.
- 12:43Speaker 3: I'm looking at the schedule here.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Giants, the Giants you know are gonna want to First
- 12:47Speaker 1: of all, the Giants did run the play well against
- 12:49Speaker 1: the Eagles last year in that game on game they
- 12:52Speaker 1: did in the one game, right, and then they're going
- 12:55Speaker 1: to be more of a run team. And they just
- 12:56Speaker 1: added a potential you know, first round right guard who
- 12:59Speaker 1: was gonna add to that old line. We'll see about
- 13:02Speaker 1: the health of Scatterby.
- 13:03Speaker 3: But you know as rams with a thirteen dreaded thirteen
- 13:07Speaker 3: personnel which came out of nowhere last season.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Of course.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Yep, yeah, Washington, because they're so light at receiver, they
- 13:16Speaker 3: could they're gonna go to West Coast. They're gonna run more.
- 13:18Speaker 3: They're gonna be more committed to the run. McCarthy. Mike
- 13:21Speaker 3: McCarthy's big on the run, no question about it. Oh yeah.
- 13:25Speaker 3: They Eagles host them in week eleven. Colt of Jonathan Taylor,
- 13:28Speaker 3: that's coming, but they don't Pierces Pierce is dealing with
- 13:32Speaker 3: some injury. I think.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Right now, Steelers sign RecA Tello, didn't they.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, Yeah, they're gonna they're gonna run. Yeah, I
- 13:39Speaker 3: mean you know what you know it's called with Shanahan
- 13:41Speaker 3: in week seventeen at the Niners. So yeah, a lot
- 13:44Speaker 3: of run coming Cowboys.
- 13:46Speaker 2: We know the Cowboys will run the ball.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Ronte Williams. Yeah, yeah, so you can't have listen. Can
- 13:53Speaker 1: you have letdowns? Sure, every team has left. No matter
- 13:56Speaker 1: how good you are, you have letdowns every once in
- 13:58Speaker 1: a while. But there were just some times it wasn't
- 14:01Speaker 1: just a letdown. I mean, that's Chicago game, the dam broke,
- 14:03Speaker 1: that first Giants game, the damn broke. That was almost
- 14:06Speaker 1: inexcusably bad run defense that they played at times last year.
- 14:11Speaker 3: That was the Giant one was crazy. I mean, Scataboo
- 14:14Speaker 3: is not fast at all, but he made him look fast.
- 14:16Speaker 3: But yeah, it was. It's a fair point. The the
- 14:21Speaker 3: one true concern I have is the obvious one. But
- 14:24Speaker 3: let's get get through it. Maybe it's a little bit
- 14:26Speaker 3: different than probably people are thinking. Okay, yes, the safety
- 14:30Speaker 3: position is a major concern. It again, they have apps Carter,
- 14:37Speaker 3: we'll see about Cole when wis Newski. We'll learn more
- 14:39Speaker 3: about his injury later. Micoba. With the frame, we know
- 14:42Speaker 3: you could put a weight that doesn't guarantee you anything.
- 14:45Speaker 3: It's the frame that he's born with. Some guy simply
- 14:47Speaker 3: it doesn't matter how much weight they put on, doesn't
- 14:50Speaker 3: make them any safer to not get hurt when you're
- 14:53Speaker 3: when you have a thin build. It's like we found
- 14:56Speaker 3: off from personal guy, so that the safety in the
- 14:59Speaker 3: corners body drum a Kouba Nichols more of a Nichol's body,
- 15:03Speaker 3: and that's a problem. So we'll see. But the thing
- 15:08Speaker 3: is here my concern would be, Okay, Coop we know
- 15:10Speaker 3: is that super freak athlete. Okay, there are gonna be
- 15:13Speaker 3: some weeks, as we discussed when the schedule came out,
- 15:15Speaker 3: as you pointed out, they may there may not be
- 15:19Speaker 3: a lot of teams with love and personnel for him
- 15:21Speaker 3: to play Nickel. He may be playing more safety than
- 15:25Speaker 3: Nickel this season. Okay, Now, we don't know how good
- 15:29Speaker 3: of a safety he's going to be. Okay, it's different position.
- 15:32Speaker 3: It's not corner, it's not Nickel, it's different right where
- 15:36Speaker 3: your lineup is different. I know there's some teams that
- 15:39Speaker 3: thought Coop could be a really good safety. But it's
- 15:43Speaker 3: the concern here is we just don't know how good
- 15:44Speaker 3: he's going to be. Can he play the run? Yeah,
- 15:46Speaker 3: he plays the run. He shows he could tackle. That's
- 15:48Speaker 3: just that's not the only thing they do is help
- 15:50Speaker 3: against the run. They got to play in coverage. So
- 15:53Speaker 3: am I concern I'm more curious about how good he's
- 15:57Speaker 3: going to be. It's safety. And by the way, teams
- 16:00Speaker 3: when you're playing bass, it's not like they're never gonna throw,
- 16:03Speaker 3: right Yeah. Yeah, yeah. It's the reason why the data shows,
- 16:08Speaker 3: going back to the sixties, you should throw more than
- 16:10Speaker 3: you run it early. This team's playing more bass in
- 16:13Speaker 3: the first half. That's that's what they do, right, But
- 16:15Speaker 3: it doesn't mean you can't throw in a team that's
- 16:17Speaker 3: gonna it's gonna play bass. Yeah, you know, it's just
- 16:20Speaker 3: it's kind of a misnomer by the way, say, I.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Know people talk about the fact that Cooper to Gan
- 16:25Speaker 2: played safety at Iowa. It was very brief. It was
- 16:27Speaker 2: as a freshman, and then he converted to corner.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Like in his freshman year, they converted him to corner
- 16:34Speaker 1: and then mostly played him at corner an occasional, you know,
- 16:37Speaker 1: they moved around a little bit.
- 16:38Speaker 2: But it's not like he played pure traditional safety a
- 16:40Speaker 2: whole lot. At eye.
- 16:41Speaker 3: I'd have to ask some ARA scouts what in the reports, like,
- 16:44Speaker 3: what did they actually see it safety? Was it really
- 16:46Speaker 3: true safety? Or was he lined up right? But it's
- 16:51Speaker 3: really interesting the scouting world. There are so many guys
- 16:53Speaker 3: thought that, you know, he could he'll, he'll, he could
- 16:55Speaker 3: play corner, but is he going to be a Pro
- 16:59Speaker 3: Bowl corner? No, and I talked, I thought he could
- 17:00Speaker 3: be a Pro Bowl corner. They thought he could be
- 17:02Speaker 3: a Pro Bowl Well, they thought he could be a
- 17:04Speaker 3: great safety with training, right, and the nickel thing is
- 17:07Speaker 3: like wow from day one, my I mean, it's it's
- 17:11Speaker 3: elite nickel, like like he's not your typical nickelo, Okay,
- 17:15Speaker 3: he'll just play inside and he'll clever the slot receiver.
- 17:18Speaker 3: Though he's been way better that he's been a dynamic
- 17:20Speaker 3: nickel where he covers other positions. So the way that
- 17:22Speaker 3: Vicks used him, so it's it's pretty interesting.
- 17:24Speaker 1: People thought he was going to be as good as
- 17:26Speaker 1: he's shown so far. He would have been a first
- 17:27Speaker 1: round pick.
- 17:28Speaker 3: Not like this, not like this like this is like
- 17:32Speaker 3: I I and and yeah, well that's as you said
- 17:37Speaker 3: that he was not. He was not a first round
- 17:38Speaker 3: pick because you didn't know exactly what position he'd be.
- 17:40Speaker 3: You know, he was this athlete, Well what is he right,
- 17:43Speaker 3: you eventually have to play one position. You know. Vic
- 17:46Speaker 3: doesn't see that way. He's a missed two. Vic is
- 17:49Speaker 3: a rare breed man. And by the way, vic is
- 17:52Speaker 3: seeming like always right, has he been wrong about anything?
- 17:55Speaker 3: You know?
- 17:55Speaker 1: That is a great question here is there a player
- 17:58Speaker 1: vic I believed it that hasn't panned out?
- 18:01Speaker 3: Or by the way, he's out there and walling, he's
- 18:03Speaker 3: out there and walling.
- 18:04Speaker 2: He yeah, And I was like, wow, no one, not
- 18:07Speaker 2: a lot of.
- 18:08Speaker 3: People agree with Vickain Wallen. We'll have to say on
- 18:10Speaker 3: his tape, We'll have to say video.
- 18:11Speaker 2: I remember remember when he just like mccooba, missed a
- 18:14Speaker 2: lot of preseason time and he's just started him once
- 18:16Speaker 2: he was healthy. That was pretty interesting. He took some
- 18:19Speaker 2: lumps early on, but he just did.
- 18:21Speaker 1: He wanted to play mccuba and he played mccouba and
- 18:23Speaker 1: went healthy, played pretty well start.
- 18:26Speaker 3: But again, who else were they going to play?
- 18:29Speaker 1: That's a great point I get. I mean, let's see
- 18:32Speaker 1: they had at the beginning of the year. Who did
- 18:35Speaker 1: they have Why can't I I'm blanking? They had read
- 18:37Speaker 1: blanket Ship, but they had somebody else, didn't they?
- 18:40Speaker 3: Yeah it was Sidney Brown and uh yeah, that's right,
- 18:43Speaker 3: it was Sidney Brown. Mccouba like the hip and they
- 18:46Speaker 3: had added apps later yeah. I mean, you couldn't play
- 18:50Speaker 3: Sidney Brown. He is the Akille Ringo of safeties. You
- 18:54Speaker 3: just can't. What I find comical is the Falcons don't.
- 18:57Speaker 3: They don't see it like that, They think he could
- 18:59Speaker 3: play safety. Yeah. I don't know what ta the're looking at,
- 19:01Speaker 3: but okay.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Yeah. And Bryce hofted nothing last year, even reunited with
- 19:09Speaker 2: Robert Salad and San Francisco. So Vic was nailed that
- 19:12Speaker 2: one too.
- 19:14Speaker 1: I mean, Bryce Huff just had some unbelievable year with
- 19:17Speaker 1: the Jets and partly did into a big contract.
- 19:19Speaker 2: But Vic was on it from the start.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Let me ask you this, When was Tristan McCollum was
- 19:25Speaker 3: with the Eagles last summer? Went went? Oh? Was he
- 19:27Speaker 3: claimed off waivers by the Raiders? The Raiders?
- 19:30Speaker 2: Yes? I think it was the Raiders.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Oh?
- 19:32Speaker 3: And then of course how could I forget? And then
- 19:36Speaker 3: we'll move on the immortal one, the guy that every
- 19:40Speaker 3: egle not every Eagles fan, but the Eagles, Lewis Cne,
- 19:43Speaker 3: the guy everyone was like feigning over. He was he
- 19:47Speaker 3: was this year, he was this year's guy. Is uh,
- 19:52Speaker 3: who are this year's go It's got to be Willie Lampkin.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Like Willie Lampkin is that guy that people are going
- 19:57Speaker 3: absolutely at.
- 19:58Speaker 1: It was to okay, don't be given away our future
- 20:02Speaker 1: I TV.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, because Jeff and I have this show
- 20:05Speaker 3: where it's the Training Camp Superstars, which is or guys
- 20:11Speaker 3: people are excited about. Andrew did a great show with
- 20:14Speaker 3: Cornelius Ingram, but there were God, there's a there's a
- 20:18Speaker 3: list of like fifteen players that eagles Twitter or social
- 20:21Speaker 3: media talking about fans not there on social media who
- 20:25Speaker 3: went crazy for Henry Josie was probably Henry Josey's right
- 20:28Speaker 3: up there name round when the hack basket was great.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Though in Training Camp he just was not.
- 20:34Speaker 2: He was There's a reason why he.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Wasn't drafted, right. Uh, The Training Camp Superstars will turn
- 20:39Speaker 3: out to be nothing, but the fans go absolutely got
- 20:42Speaker 3: eight blank form and they're they're fandom for the players misguided.
- 20:49Speaker 3: But and sometimes we get fooled, you know.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Yeah, Now, since you mentioned it, it's a good time
- 20:54Speaker 1: to plug this. We mentioned in a recent pod that
- 20:58Speaker 1: Andrew is doing a series. I'm some of these past
- 21:01Speaker 1: Training Camp legends who became legendary because the fans fell
- 21:05Speaker 1: in love with them at camp or they came into
- 21:07Speaker 1: camp with a lot of hype. The next one, he's
- 21:10Speaker 1: already done Cornelius Ingram, which was a great one. Uh.
- 21:13Speaker 1: The next one is Ifani MoMA, who yes looking for
- 21:18Speaker 1: Friday A nice great interview with Fani for those who
- 21:21Speaker 1: need to refresher if Fani MoMA was a six foot
- 21:24Speaker 1: six six seven some real very tall wide receiver during
- 21:28Speaker 1: the Chip Kelly era who so many fans thought was
- 21:32Speaker 1: going to be a star because of how his his height,
- 21:35Speaker 1: and it just didn't pan out.
- 21:37Speaker 2: He did wind up going to Arizona for a little bit.
- 21:40Speaker 1: I think they moved him to tight end and came
- 21:43Speaker 1: a little bit more more feasible of a player. But yeah,
- 21:47Speaker 1: while he was with the Eagles, he had a big
- 21:49Speaker 1: fan base because people thought he was going to be
- 21:51Speaker 1: some towering wide receiver who was amazing and it just
- 21:54Speaker 1: didn't pan out.
- 21:55Speaker 3: So MoMA got an extension. That's how well he did
- 21:58Speaker 3: at tight end. As he said, he yeah with the Cardinals.
- 22:02Speaker 3: But yeah, there's uh, there are always players that every
- 22:08Speaker 3: fan base, you know, every team, who they love and
- 22:12Speaker 3: it's like when Henry Joe, like Paul Turner, right, Paul
- 22:14Speaker 3: Turner was one. Paul Turner's another guy I mean, I
- 22:18Speaker 3: told the truth on Twitter and I got Hayes for it, like,
- 22:20Speaker 3: you don't know what you talking about. He's gonna be great.
- 22:21Speaker 3: He was gonna regret this. He put up like he
- 22:24Speaker 3: just had great training because he couldn't run. Yeah, I said, guys,
- 22:27Speaker 3: he doesn't run very well. He's never gonna make it.
- 22:30Speaker 3: He can't get open on his own. That's why you
- 22:32Speaker 3: got to be careful with OTA's training camp in preseason.
- 22:35Speaker 3: There's in pre season Heck, they're better coverages in preseason practice.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Then you're gonna see in training in the games, right,
- 22:43Speaker 3: and so you gotta be careful what you see. But
- 22:47Speaker 3: it is really funny and everyone put your list out.
- 22:49Speaker 3: I'm very interested to see what the guys that you
- 22:52Speaker 3: latched onto, you know, and you think about getting the
- 22:55Speaker 3: new jersey, you know, g GB, Dariel Green Beckham that
- 23:01Speaker 3: I was there the day that he was traded. I
- 23:03Speaker 3: was a Titans camp, I remember, and they told me
- 23:05Speaker 3: he was running for a string. I'm like, okay, what
- 23:08Speaker 3: what what the Eagles don't know? Yeah, you know that twenty.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Sixteen he could not play, that was what they didn't know.
- 23:14Speaker 3: Well, no, but he was the second round pick.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Yeah, that doesn't mean you can play.
- 23:17Speaker 3: He was, but.
- 23:20Speaker 2: He was not good.
- 23:21Speaker 3: I know you question, I know you questioned it. I
- 23:23Speaker 3: remember remember you you've you you've you've stuck yourself out
- 23:25Speaker 3: for that one. You were like this guy in no way, I.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Took a lot of bullets.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Uh. But all right, So getting back to the your
- 23:32Speaker 1: overall concern is just the safety picture. I mean, there's
- 23:36Speaker 1: you have a second year guy in Micouba who is
- 23:38Speaker 1: hurt for a lot of his rookie year. You've got
- 23:40Speaker 1: the Gene who's transitioning. You have a number three safety
- 23:44Speaker 1: who's gonna have to play a lot in Nickel, and
- 23:46Speaker 1: we don't even know who that's gonna be.
- 23:48Speaker 2: So I think it's fair.
- 23:49Speaker 1: I think it's all legit to say the entire picture
- 23:53Speaker 1: is somewhat nebulous, and they're usually not at this point
- 23:57Speaker 1: going into camp Nebulus had a spot like that. Hey,

- 25:13Speaker 1: com and on Twitter at pH L Sports Nation.
- 25:17Speaker 3: Yeah, you don't want to take the attitude. Oh, it's
- 25:19Speaker 3: just safety. Like I know, coaches don't like it when
- 25:23Speaker 3: you say, hey, man, you'll be fine safety right and screaming.
- 25:27Speaker 3: What are you talking about? Like, why would we accept that?
- 25:29Speaker 3: It's like the old joke and coaching was you can
- 25:32Speaker 3: hide a guard a guy at guard, so he gets exposed,
- 25:35Speaker 3: then you can't hide him. You know what I mean.
- 25:37Speaker 3: You have to be very careful of saying like, oh,
- 25:39Speaker 3: you could hide a guy. It's like in baseball you
- 25:43Speaker 3: can put a guy first base who can't run. Yea,
- 25:45Speaker 3: a guy can't feel like it, just put let him
- 25:47Speaker 3: learn first, right, or put them right, whatever the case
- 25:50Speaker 3: may be. But now you don't want to have to
- 25:52Speaker 3: hide people.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Of course, not of course, like you know, you don't
- 25:55Speaker 1: want to hide right guard. And as soon as you
- 25:57Speaker 1: said that, I'm thinking, like, you know, like when you
- 25:59Speaker 1: have to play Jaman and he sacked his own quarterback.
- 26:02Speaker 3: You know. Crazy about Javon Brown? Was he actually had
- 26:04Speaker 3: good snaps? Was with the Falcons of the Rams one
- 26:07Speaker 3: of the two teams.
- 26:08Speaker 2: It was the Cults, But you might be right it
- 26:10Speaker 2: could be.
- 26:10Speaker 3: No, I think actually was a good player for one
- 26:13Speaker 3: then he could I mean you want to talk about
- 26:15Speaker 3: falling off the table. Yeah, it couldn't play like when
- 26:17Speaker 3: he got here, he just couldn't play. Yeah, you don't
- 26:19Speaker 3: want to be searching, like you how you have to
- 26:22Speaker 3: give how he credit for the uh the CJ. Garner
- 26:26Speaker 3: Johnson trade getting from the Saints Red before the season started. Yeah,
- 26:30Speaker 3: like you don't want to have to go down to that, Like, okay, great,
- 26:33Speaker 3: great job of scouting. He was on it. He knew
- 26:35Speaker 3: they had a contract issue. But you don't have to
- 26:37Speaker 3: rely on that or the the Ronald Darby trade. Yeah,
- 26:42Speaker 3: when he got for for Matthews, Like, you don't want
- 26:45Speaker 3: to wait because something didn't work out at the last minute.
- 26:48Speaker 3: You gotta be careful.
- 26:49Speaker 1: I agree, because I mean there's always examples where it
- 26:52Speaker 1: didn't work out. I mean twenty twenty three was a
- 26:55Speaker 1: really good example.
- 26:55Speaker 2: I mean they were they were.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Bad at safety. They had Justin Evans and Torella Edmund.
- 27:00Speaker 1: I mean, none of those guys were reliable or even
- 27:02Speaker 1: very good. And then how he thought he was going
- 27:04Speaker 1: to fix it by trading for Kevin Byron and and
- 27:06Speaker 1: that didn't work out well and then they collapsed down.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Well, that was a scheme change. He was going from
- 27:11Speaker 3: a different scheme and also coaching. Yeah, there was a
- 27:14Speaker 3: lot of very good staff on twenty three.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, we talked about the linebacker situation with
- 27:19Speaker 1: I mean Zachham and then who's the guy that they
- 27:22Speaker 1: signed for zero signing bonus money?
- 27:24Speaker 2: Moro? You know, like, yeah, they thought they could compensate.
- 27:28Speaker 3: It was it was Zach cunning him Moro. Who was
- 27:31Speaker 3: the other Miles Jack?
- 27:33Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah, but I'm not even he he he
- 27:35Speaker 2: was like a cup of coffee.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Well he actually retired. Then he retired. Then it came
- 27:40Speaker 3: back to the Steelers like what.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Is very weird? All right, so safety for sure.
- 27:47Speaker 1: I'm going to introduce this a very small concern and
- 27:50Speaker 1: it could be a bigger one because last year it
- 27:53Speaker 1: was a small one that turned into a bigger one too.
- 27:55Speaker 1: You know, last year we were talking about their number
- 27:57Speaker 1: three edge rusher and it was going to be either
- 28:01Speaker 1: josh Ucha or was gonna be as He's o Jelauri.
- 28:04Speaker 2: You know, they don't really have a definitive one.
- 28:06Speaker 1: So Howie went and through some darts and you know,
- 28:09Speaker 1: we felt that they would be okay, and they really
- 28:11Speaker 1: it really didn't pan out until That's why they had
- 28:12Speaker 1: a trade for Jalen Phillips. And I'm more confident in
- 28:16Speaker 1: the trio of Grenard, Jelex Hunt and Nolan Smith Junior.
- 28:20Speaker 1: But that only works if Nolan Smith Junior is ready
- 28:24Speaker 1: to be a good pass rusher again and stay healthy.
- 28:27Speaker 1: And you know he's a good run defender. He has
- 28:30Speaker 1: had moments of being a good pass rusher. He's been
- 28:34Speaker 1: more consistently a good run defender. But if you're talking
- 28:37Speaker 1: about vic in a three man rotation, then someone's got
- 28:40Speaker 1: to be that man number three. And I do I
- 28:43Speaker 1: have the concern about Smith being a healthy and then
- 28:47Speaker 1: b becoming a good enough pass rusher to make this
- 28:50Speaker 1: rotation work. Not a huge concerns a lot, but it's
- 28:56Speaker 1: a concern.
- 28:57Speaker 3: Unless there's something we don't know. And Nold Smith has
- 28:59Speaker 3: not come off surgery this time, correct, and this is
- 29:02Speaker 3: the this is a big year for him. So let's
- 29:03Speaker 3: let's this is year number four. Yeah, twenty twenty three,
- 29:08Speaker 3: Let's see what happens. But the good thing is when
- 29:11Speaker 3: we were talking about the death and recent shows on defense,
- 29:14Speaker 3: they have plenty of rushers. That's not the problem. Epiness
- 29:16Speaker 3: is there more of a run guy, But yeah, it's
- 29:19Speaker 3: just they got Smith has got to perform. Boy Smith
- 29:21Speaker 3: performs with Epicketty because I liked him seemingly forever. Yeah,
- 29:26Speaker 3: and he wanted to be here with Hunt, who is
- 29:28Speaker 3: one of our breakout players. He quasi broke out, but
- 29:31Speaker 3: not to the point where you think he's gonna break
- 29:32Speaker 3: up this season now, plus Garnard. I'm not worried about Gernard.
- 29:36Speaker 3: This is supposed to get no, this is this shoulder
- 29:39Speaker 3: surgery is supposed to clean this thing up, and he
- 29:40Speaker 3: should be good. Although we did mention on a recent
- 29:43Speaker 3: show he's had he's been heard over the years, he's
- 29:45Speaker 3: had some injuries, but they've got death here to withstand
- 29:48Speaker 3: on all this.
- 29:49Speaker 1: They have de you know, is ebickeetty Like let's say
- 29:52Speaker 1: Ebi Kenny had to be a part of the three
- 29:54Speaker 1: man rotation because Smith got hurt or he wasn't playing well.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Is he a better upgrade than what Ojelari was before
- 30:02Speaker 1: he came here or I don't know, because he's.
- 30:05Speaker 3: Healthy, Ocelari problems health, He's he's been he's been heard
- 30:09Speaker 3: a lot, hamstring of course, all sorts of stuff over
- 30:12Speaker 3: his career. So that's why that's why he's hit what
- 30:15Speaker 3: we call Journeymansville. He's he's to the point where it's
- 30:18Speaker 3: gonna be a lot of one year deals because he
- 30:20Speaker 3: just he's not the same player he once was, all
- 30:23Speaker 3: right too.
- 30:24Speaker 2: I mean he was was playing okay, but it's not
- 30:26Speaker 2: he wasn't changing any game terrible.
- 30:29Speaker 3: Yeah, he got he became. He basically got debudded special teams.
- 30:32Speaker 3: He didn't do badly in training camp, that was the thing.
- 30:34Speaker 3: He was way better than O.
- 30:36Speaker 1: Of course, yeah, yeah he was. And I actually thought
- 30:38Speaker 1: he was gonna go into the city and play and
- 30:39Speaker 1: he started to play okay. But you know, obviously they
- 30:42Speaker 1: needed general films to really become a fearsome through elite
- 30:47Speaker 1: defensive rotation there at the edge.
- 30:48Speaker 3: So all right, so that's that's not it.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Those those are like minor concerns, nothing really major.
- 30:55Speaker 1: But you know, any one of those things could be
- 30:58Speaker 1: compounded throughout the course of the season and become a
- 31:00Speaker 1: bigger concern.
