- 0:16Speaker 1: Welcome to jag Za.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I'm kind Annie Stevens, Brian Sexton, and John Oser are
- 0:20Speaker 2: with me today. For the first time in about seven months,
- 0:22Speaker 2: we get to go over at Jaguars football highlights from
- 0:26Speaker 2: a real game. They had their first preseason game on
- 0:28Speaker 2: Saturday against the Chiefs and things looked pretty good right
- 0:31Speaker 2: out of the gate. We're gonna start out with big
- 0:33Speaker 2: things today as we start off with.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Fast as our first Bay Day.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Some of the problems last year was the slow starts
- 0:39Speaker 2: for the team as the Jaguars tried to get things going. Now,
- 0:43Speaker 2: this was a fast start, certainly with that new kickoff pool.
- 0:47Speaker 2: I ain't gone.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I looked crazy at first.
- 0:49Speaker 2: I'm as say, Tank had a much cleaner look for
- 0:52Speaker 2: his I thought I was supposed to Detac with a
- 0:55Speaker 2: long time ago in mine. But it was exciting to
- 0:57Speaker 2: be able to make a play like that.
- 1:00Speaker 4: It was cool Again, was confidence to be able to
- 1:02Speaker 4: be like, Okay, these kids will turn the room and
- 1:04Speaker 4: it's gonna be.
- 1:04Speaker 5: Ax Shine yard.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Right Brian, We've been talking about this new kickoff rule,
- 1:09Speaker 2: what it was gonna look like, and it was really
- 1:11Speaker 2: exciting right from the gate.
- 1:12Speaker 4: Well, one of the things that we knew was that
- 1:14Speaker 4: if a guy got free, he was gonna have a
- 1:16Speaker 4: great chance to make a play because everyone is so
- 1:19Speaker 4: congested on the other side of the thirty five yard line.
- 1:22Speaker 4: And listen, there were two or three times where he
- 1:24Speaker 4: should have been tackled where he ran back to the
- 1:26Speaker 4: middle of the field and all you saw were red
- 1:28Speaker 4: shirts surrounding him. He made a great play to get
- 1:30Speaker 4: to the outside. I mean, this is a talented guy,
- 1:33Speaker 4: and we didn't get to see enough of him last year,
- 1:35Speaker 4: but he's got the sort of body stature right. He's short,
- 1:40Speaker 4: he's compact, he's powerful, he's quick. It's gonna be fun.
- 1:44Speaker 4: I really, I think the league got what they wanted
- 1:47Speaker 4: from this. There's gonna be some tweaks that they need
- 1:49Speaker 4: to make because when you give up a return like that,
- 1:51Speaker 4: coach is gonna go just kick it out of the
- 1:52Speaker 4: end zone.
- 1:53Speaker 5: We'll give it to him at the thirty yard line.
- 1:56Speaker 4: So they're gonna have to tweak it if they want
- 1:57Speaker 4: to keep it. But mission accomplished on that.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I think.
- 2:00Speaker 6: They're gonna look for a sweet spot in terms of, uh,
- 2:04Speaker 6: where to kick the ball from certain rules in the tweaks,
- 2:07Speaker 6: I think, you know, you could easily see the kickoff
- 2:13Speaker 6: team try to drop a guy back to prevent long returns,
- 2:18Speaker 6: not to start with it. So I think you're gonna
- 2:19Speaker 6: see special teams coaches play with this because there's a
- 2:23Speaker 6: there's no best practices with the kickoff yet. But credit
- 2:26Speaker 6: to Parker Washington. Mean now, they've been looking for something
- 2:28Speaker 6: from him for a while.
- 2:28Speaker 4: But what's interesting is is that Doug Peterson told me
- 2:31Speaker 4: on Friday he wasn't gonna do anything. I mean, they
- 2:33Speaker 4: were only going to do the most vanilla of looks
- 2:36Speaker 4: on the kickoff team, and on the most vanilla of
- 2:38Speaker 4: looks they.
- 2:39Speaker 5: Got the return.
- 2:40Speaker 4: So when they start getting clever and creative and changing
- 2:44Speaker 4: up the kicker and the return men and the formation,
- 2:46Speaker 4: that's when it could.
- 2:47Speaker 5: Get really interesting.
- 2:48Speaker 2: It's definitely something that's gonna evolve as the season goes along.
- 2:51Speaker 2: As we saw even in the game on Saturday, things
- 2:54Speaker 2: looked very different from the first quarter through the end
- 2:56Speaker 2: of the game. Our second big thing today is gonna
- 2:59Speaker 2: be clean. See any turnovers in this game from the team,
- 3:02Speaker 2: which is an issue that we saw last year. Doug
- 3:04Speaker 2: Peterson talked about that being one of the things he
- 3:07Speaker 2: was focusing on just playing smart football, John, Is there
- 3:10Speaker 2: a time to make of it?
- 3:11Speaker 3: I know it was, you know, the starters were not
- 3:13Speaker 3: very long.
- 3:13Speaker 2: But to keep taking care of the football, that's that's huge.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Yeah, a little.
- 3:18Speaker 6: I mean Trevor was in for two series and didn't fumble,
- 3:22Speaker 6: which is sort of the overall thing. I don't think
- 3:25Speaker 6: you really see much of that until the pressure's really
- 3:28Speaker 6: on in that situation. That feels like where his fumbles
- 3:30Speaker 6: came from in the past. But sure, better to not
- 3:35Speaker 6: have them than to have them. And I think the
- 3:37Speaker 6: fact that you got through the whole game with the
- 3:39Speaker 6: team committing no turnovers, they were clean. They took advantage
- 3:43Speaker 6: of some situations, meaning you got the return and then
- 3:46Speaker 6: you had a point blank touchdown opportunity and you took
- 3:49Speaker 6: advantage of it. So the Chiefs got down closer to
- 3:52Speaker 6: the red zone, the defense stopped it. So no, you
- 3:57Speaker 6: can't tell much, but better to see what we saw
- 4:00Speaker 6: to see worse.
- 4:00Speaker 5: I can tell you firsthand.
- 4:01Speaker 4: The second half of the first preseason game from a
- 4:04Speaker 4: broadcaster's perspective, can get really arduous, right because you've got
- 4:09Speaker 4: second and third and fourth team guys out there and
- 4:11Speaker 4: they're jumping off sides and they're making stupid mistakes. The
- 4:14Speaker 4: impressive part about clean to me was that in the
- 4:16Speaker 4: second half there weren't a lot of those. Yeah, there
- 4:18Speaker 4: was one here or there, but for the most there
- 4:20Speaker 4: was a situation where they had lost track of what
- 4:24Speaker 4: Kansas City was trying to do. There was some confusion
- 4:26Speaker 4: and coverage and Doug Peterson had to use a time
- 4:28Speaker 4: out in the fourth quarter. That's the only one to remember.
- 4:31Speaker 4: So the game was pretty clean from start to finish,
- 4:35Speaker 4: and in areas that generally are murky in preseason games,
- 4:38Speaker 4: it was a really good showing for the coaches and
- 4:41Speaker 4: players on Saturday.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Night ran That's a good point that leads into our
- 4:44Speaker 2: final big thing, which is being consistent.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Doug Peterson talked postgame.
- 4:48Speaker 2: About how he didn't feel like there was a drop
- 4:49Speaker 2: off no matter which squad was out on the field.
- 4:54Speaker 7: And I think that's what you're seeing out there in practice.
- 4:56Speaker 7: That's what I'm seeing anyway. And then tonight, with so
- 4:59Speaker 7: many guys playing in this game, you just there wasn't
- 5:01Speaker 7: really a drop off, you know, because sometimes when you
- 5:04Speaker 7: when you get out of that first second unit, sometimes
- 5:07Speaker 7: there's a letdown or a drop off with play and
- 5:11Speaker 7: I didn't see that tonight. Our guys played played fast,
- 5:13Speaker 7: they played hard. Were their mistakes, Sure, there were mistakes
- 5:17Speaker 7: and ms and things like that that we can clean
- 5:19Speaker 7: up this week. But you know, I think top to bottom,
- 5:23Speaker 7: you know, the guys guys played. Credit to them, they
- 5:26Speaker 7: played fast and they played physical.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Brian, We've talked in the past about when the starters
- 5:31Speaker 2: are out there's kind of a huge drop off and
- 5:33Speaker 2: just not having that competition necessarily at every position, but
- 5:36Speaker 2: having so many players that are kind of fighting for
- 5:39Speaker 2: a spot. You felt like even when the second third
- 5:42Speaker 2: string was in there, there was still a competition on
- 5:43Speaker 2: the field.
- 5:44Speaker 5: Yeah, And the word consistency comes to mind, right.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Listen, the difference between good players who can occasionally play
- 5:51Speaker 4: great and great players is consistency.
- 5:54Speaker 5: And if you go out there.
- 5:55Speaker 4: On the practice field early before any practice starts, you're
- 5:58Speaker 4: going to see the same five or six guys. Going
- 6:00Speaker 4: to see Trevor, you're gonna see Josh, you're gonna see Tyson,
- 6:02Speaker 4: You're going to see Evan Ingram. Who's the best example
- 6:04Speaker 4: of this, And what I've noticed in recent weeks, Kai,
- 6:06Speaker 4: is that Evan Ingram, who's the first guy on the
- 6:09Speaker 4: practice field every day is out there doing the same
- 6:12Speaker 4: things the same way, and you now are starting to
- 6:15Speaker 4: see other players follow him out. They've seen the clues
- 6:19Speaker 4: that greatness has left for them to pick up, and
- 6:22Speaker 4: they're starting to do that. I think that's one of
- 6:24Speaker 4: the reasons why they played clean into the second half,
- 6:27Speaker 4: why there wasn't a huge drop off from two to three,
- 6:30Speaker 4: is because guys like Evan Ingram are showing them how
- 6:33Speaker 4: to get it done in a consistent manner.
- 6:35Speaker 6: I don't want to make too much of the depth
- 6:37Speaker 6: because I thought they weren't particularly deep team in twenty two,
- 6:41Speaker 6: and they wound up being deep in the right spots.
- 6:43Speaker 6: In twenty three, I thought they were deeper and injuries
- 6:46Speaker 6: hurt him. So sometimes depth can mean exactly where you
- 6:49Speaker 6: get hurt. But overall, think about it, this is Trent
- 6:51Speaker 6: Balke's fourth year as general manager, thirt year of a
- 6:55Speaker 6: Doug Peterson. They had to draft the last year where
- 6:57Speaker 6: they drafted thirteen guys. It takes time in this league
- 7:01Speaker 6: to get guys you want to get the type of
- 7:03Speaker 6: guys you want. It does feel like what they want
- 7:08Speaker 6: and quality is dipping a little bit further into the roster.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Maybe it didn't twenty two.
- 7:15Speaker 3: All right, stay with us here on Jags Am.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Coming up, we're gonna go over all of the highlights
- 7:19Speaker 2: from Saturday's game against the Chiefs. Jags fans, register your

- 7:53Speaker 7: I just wanted our guys to execute and play hard,
- 7:55Speaker 7: play fast, and I felt like they did that today.
- 7:57Speaker 7: It's a new season, new faces, you know, some old
- 8:00Speaker 7: faces out there, you know, and it's just for us internally,
- 8:06Speaker 7: it's just a different feel. It's a different team, you know,
- 8:08Speaker 7: a whole different year. So it's not anything about last year.
- 8:12Speaker 7: It's just about getting better and moving forward.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Jagg's turning the page the beginning of the season officially
- 8:19Speaker 2: as that preseason game number one is underway. So let's
- 8:22Speaker 2: look it back at some of those highlights. And we
- 8:24Speaker 2: didn't have to wait long for a highlight because the
- 8:26Speaker 2: first kickoff return from Parker Washington was a pretty good one.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Brian. We talked about it a little off the top,
- 8:32Speaker 3: but I don't know if we expected that right out
- 8:34Speaker 3: of the gate, at least I didn't.
- 8:35Speaker 4: No, I didn't expect anything like that. As I mentioned,
- 8:37Speaker 4: you know, Doug had told us on Friday when we
- 8:39Speaker 4: met with him for the television meetings, that they weren't
- 8:41Speaker 4: going to do anything crazy. They weren't going to show anything,
- 8:44Speaker 4: and he didn't expect the Chiefs would either. This was
- 8:47Speaker 4: just a great play by Parker Washington, and this is
- 8:50Speaker 4: what the competition committee wanted. They knew that in that
- 8:53Speaker 4: tight area that if someone was able to get free,
- 8:57Speaker 4: this was possible.
- 8:58Speaker 5: And it's just a great play.
- 9:02Speaker 3: John.
- 9:02Speaker 2: We've been talking and Trevor even I think, pointed out
- 9:05Speaker 2: last week he felt like Parker was having a great
- 9:07Speaker 2: camp high stuffing there. I still don't know what he's
- 9:09Speaker 2: doing there, but he has been having a good camp
- 9:12Speaker 2: and to kind of see that progression in his second year,
- 9:14Speaker 2: John's been good.
- 9:15Speaker 6: Yeah, he's a kid who can make plays. Even when
- 9:18Speaker 6: he didn't quite know what he was doing last year,
- 9:21Speaker 6: he made a couple of plays when the ball was
- 9:23Speaker 6: around him. If when he gets in the right spot
- 9:28Speaker 6: and really incorporates himself in the offense.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Remember, he was hurt his first return last year.
- 9:34Speaker 6: He hurt his knee, so he really didn't get back
- 9:37Speaker 6: and get any receptions I think until Cincinnati when Christian
- 9:40Speaker 6: got hurt. A very limited sample size last year, so
- 9:45Speaker 6: I don't really expect him to be one of your
- 9:47Speaker 6: quote front line guys.
- 9:49Speaker 1: But Brian, like we.
- 9:51Speaker 6: Talked about, they need these second year guys to be
- 9:54Speaker 6: guys that you don't hold your breath when it's time
- 9:57Speaker 6: for them to play. He feels like that guy.
- 10:00Speaker 4: He's also a guy with ability that you could craft
- 10:02Speaker 4: a package for and he's just really talented. I do
- 10:06Speaker 4: want to point out real quick, there were a lot
- 10:08Speaker 4: of guys that made blocks. Tyler Lacy had a blocky
- 10:10Speaker 4: serb Dullah, Tim Jones, Tank Bigsby. What was really impressive
- 10:13Speaker 4: about that play, beyond Parker's just ability, was how many
- 10:18Speaker 4: guys were down the field blocking all the way.
- 10:20Speaker 2: So it's pretty cool to see just how wide open
- 10:23Speaker 2: the space is because of the way they have to
- 10:25Speaker 2: align now and just five yards apart, not kind of
- 10:27Speaker 2: running at each other. So to see how that goes
- 10:30Speaker 2: along with the season. Still one of our defensive highlights. Yes,
- 10:33Speaker 2: Serubdulah getting a sack in the first quarter I believe
- 10:36Speaker 2: as well, and partially because of the other two getting
- 10:39Speaker 2: there first. But always good to see when you can
- 10:41Speaker 2: get some pressure on the quarterback, even if it's Patrick
- 10:44Speaker 2: Maholmes who's very elusive.
- 10:46Speaker 5: He just kept coming right.
- 10:47Speaker 4: You see him coming all the way from the far side.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Trayvon Walker looped in from that three technique and misses
- 10:52Speaker 4: him right, and Abdula just got off the block and
- 10:55Speaker 4: kept playing. That's a guy with a sense for where
- 10:58Speaker 4: the quarterback is and that's shoot legal, so he would.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Have that well.
- 11:02Speaker 6: Doug has talked a lot about they're going to play.
- 11:07Speaker 6: All teams rotate their defensive line a little bit. This
- 11:10Speaker 6: team feels like it's going to rotate a lot. It's
- 11:12Speaker 6: one of Ryan Nielsen's things. So if Abdulah can get
- 11:17Speaker 6: in that mix of eight or nine, we can see this.
- 11:21Speaker 6: I think it's important for that group as a whole,
- 11:25Speaker 6: not necessarily Abdullah, but the group as a whole to
- 11:28Speaker 6: have gotten a little bit of pressure.
- 11:29Speaker 1: On Mahomes in this game at some point.
- 11:30Speaker 6: He only played what seven plays, but probably good for
- 11:34Speaker 6: their confidence that as a group, they caused some disruption.
- 11:38Speaker 6: It's what they didn't do enough last year outside of
- 11:40Speaker 6: Treyvon and Josh.
- 11:42Speaker 3: It's interesting you say that.
- 11:42Speaker 2: I think one of the media members was saying about
- 11:44Speaker 2: the defense that it kind of looked like a hockey
- 11:46Speaker 2: shift at times, really players coming on and off. And
- 11:48Speaker 2: Doug has come on the record and said he that's
- 11:51Speaker 2: what he likes about the scheme that they're running right now,
- 11:53Speaker 2: similar to when he was in Philadelphia, kind of utilizing
- 11:55Speaker 2: everybody's skill set at different points so you're not getting
- 11:58Speaker 2: as tired and you can maintain through g.
- 12:00Speaker 4: And Ryan Nielsen and Doug both said they expected especially
- 12:04Speaker 4: with Trey Bunn bulking up. He told us at Friday's
- 12:05Speaker 4: two hundre eighty five pounds, that's fifteen pounds t everything
- 12:08Speaker 4: was last year and he wanted to have his hand
- 12:10Speaker 4: on the ground inside and that three technique on the
- 12:12Speaker 4: inside shoulder of the guard. They didn't do enough of
- 12:14Speaker 4: that with him. They dropped him back into coverage last year.
- 12:17Speaker 4: That was him playing exactly the way Ryan Nielsen wanted
- 12:20Speaker 4: him to. So it was fun to see early on
- 12:21Speaker 4: and by the way, his eyes must have been like
- 12:23Speaker 4: saucers early on in the game with the chance to
- 12:25Speaker 4: hit the quarterback to just let that guy's side.
- 12:27Speaker 5: Step in like that.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I know we'll get there eventually. Sure he will in
- 12:31Speaker 2: the regular season. We hope Brian Thomas junior, first round pick,
- 12:34Speaker 2: getting his first catch of the year, kind of getting
- 12:37Speaker 2: some experience under his belt.
- 12:39Speaker 3: And I don't think this is a great play.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I don't know if we'll get the exact angle of it.
- 12:44Speaker 2: But the reaction from the team on his catch right here,
- 12:49Speaker 2: because obviously been talking about Brian Thomas Junior kind of
- 12:51Speaker 2: getting him out of a shell, and he's definitely got
- 12:53Speaker 2: out of the shell after this, celebrating a little bit,
- 12:56Speaker 2: and just everybody's reaction on it is so funny. You
- 12:58Speaker 2: can look at a different person every single time. What
- 13:00Speaker 2: a great catch.
- 13:01Speaker 4: It was a great catch because Joshua Williams that corner
- 13:03Speaker 4: is hanging all over him, and what you don't see
- 13:06Speaker 4: until you see this angle is there's a safety who's
- 13:08Speaker 4: bearing down on him over the top. And to have
- 13:10Speaker 4: the concentration to fight off the one defender and understand
- 13:16Speaker 4: the other one was coming and make the catch tells
- 13:18Speaker 4: you he's used to making big catches.
- 13:20Speaker 6: Yeah, my impression is they really like this kid, and
- 13:23Speaker 6: he's a kid who is easy to like because he
- 13:25Speaker 6: doesn't say a whole lot. I'm not around him the
- 13:28Speaker 6: way players are, but I haven't gotten the impression that
- 13:30Speaker 6: he's come in and thinks he's that guy and all
- 13:34Speaker 6: that so, and he's good and they know he's important.
- 13:40Speaker 6: So all of that sort of came out when he
- 13:43Speaker 6: caught that pass out of sidelines.
- 13:45Speaker 1: It was cool to see. I mean, this is a team.
- 13:48Speaker 6: The wide receivers on this team, especially Ingram and David.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Kirk, sort of define it. They pull for each other.
- 14:00Speaker 6: In twenty two, that was a real calling card of
- 14:03Speaker 6: the bunch, is that they really didn't care who got
- 14:05Speaker 6: the catches. It feels like that that they're encouraging each other.
- 14:11Speaker 6: It feels like there is a camaraderie there. I'm not
- 14:14Speaker 6: gonna say it wasn't there last year, but it sort
- 14:15Speaker 6: of goes up and down. It feels like it's gonna
- 14:17Speaker 6: be back this year.
- 14:19Speaker 2: It's very nice to see seeing everybody bond together. And
- 14:21Speaker 2: obviously as things go with the rookie as he evolves,
- 14:24Speaker 2: that'll be great as well. Second year player. Another one
- 14:27Speaker 2: we want to talk about, Tank had a pretty good
- 14:29Speaker 2: day for himself.
- 14:30Speaker 3: No fumbles.
- 14:31Speaker 2: As we talked about, ball security was an issue at times,
- 14:34Speaker 2: a couple of big runsie core off and then also
- 14:36Speaker 2: that return that he got a little tripped up on.
- 14:38Speaker 2: But John, we know you love Tank, so it was
- 14:41Speaker 2: nice to see for.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Him he was not to love.
- 14:43Speaker 6: I know he was too good in camp last year
- 14:48Speaker 6: to be as ineffective as he was all year and
- 14:52Speaker 6: to continue that. If you watch him, he clearly has skills.
- 14:56Speaker 6: He clearly brings something to the table. Good for him
- 15:00Speaker 6: to see that when the uniform was on on Saturda.
- 15:04Speaker 6: I'm not going to overplay and say this means he's
- 15:05Speaker 6: going to be an all Pro, but I think that
- 15:08Speaker 6: does give him some confidence. And I would just be
- 15:11Speaker 6: surprised if he's not a lot more of a factor
- 15:13Speaker 6: this year, not as based on this game and just
- 15:15Speaker 6: based on everything they're saying about him, everything we've seen
- 15:17Speaker 6: from him.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Brian, I think he can matter.
- 15:19Speaker 4: I think he's unfairly targeted with ball security issues. There
- 15:22Speaker 4: were other players on this team that have had trouble
- 15:24Speaker 4: with the ball. The quarterback last year had twenty one
- 15:27Speaker 4: turnovers and in his first season on the starting lineup.
- 15:31Speaker 4: Travis CTN had a couple of really costly fumbles, one
- 15:34Speaker 4: against the Giants here that cost him a chance to
- 15:37Speaker 4: win the ball game. So people said, well, he didn't
- 15:40Speaker 4: take care of the ball. You know what, he had
- 15:42Speaker 4: one fumble, right, he had to go off his hands,
- 15:44Speaker 4: he had one fumble.
- 15:47Speaker 5: He's a really good player.
- 15:48Speaker 4: And the power and the speed and the versatility he's got.
- 15:53Speaker 4: The issue with him last year was trust, right, and
- 15:56Speaker 4: you could say, well it was ball security not as
- 15:57Speaker 4: much as it was protection issues. And both Press Taylor
- 16:01Speaker 4: and Peterson have said this year, we trust this kid.
- 16:05Speaker 6: And I think even the coaches looked back and regret
- 16:08Speaker 6: that a little bit that they kind of went away from.
- 16:10Speaker 6: I get why they did it when you have a
- 16:12Speaker 6: player like Travis DTN and in a lot of close games,
- 16:15Speaker 6: it's hard to go away from the guy for a
- 16:19Speaker 6: guy that you want to show confidence in. But I
- 16:21Speaker 6: think when they got together in February, that was probably
- 16:24Speaker 6: an area where they said, you know what, if we
- 16:26Speaker 6: had to do over again, we'd probably stick with him
- 16:27Speaker 6: a little more. I think there's a concerted effort and
- 16:30Speaker 6: it seems like tanks are going to make a payoff.
- 16:32Speaker 5: You were on him early in training camp last year.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Everyone will be on him by the time this season ends.
- 16:36Speaker 4: He is going to be an impactful player this year.
- 16:39Speaker 2: He's going to need to be, especially if this team
- 16:40Speaker 2: wants to succeed this year.
- 16:41Speaker 1: For sure.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Let's talk with this catch from bether to Devin Duvernet,
- 16:45Speaker 2: another new edition in the offseason. Didn't look he kind
- 16:49Speaker 2: of looked up, found the ball and I don't know
- 16:51Speaker 2: if it was a broken player, if that was the
- 16:52Speaker 2: plan all along, but to come back and get this
- 16:54Speaker 2: catch and then roll in and get a touchdown, it's
- 16:57Speaker 2: just it's nice to have the versatility from the wide
- 17:00Speaker 2: receiver group. They had versatility before, but just in terms
- 17:04Speaker 2: of being able to do different things and expecting something
- 17:06Speaker 2: from everybody.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Well, a couple of us.
- 17:07Speaker 6: First of all, CJ stood in with a hit, yeah,
- 17:10Speaker 6: and a other nice ball. This is NFL stuff here
- 17:14Speaker 6: at the end of the play, meaning the Chiefs defenders
- 17:17Speaker 6: you see doesn't locate the ball and DuVernay does so.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Duverne is a fifth to six year guy, been around it,
- 17:24Speaker 1: been doing it.
- 17:25Speaker 6: Certainly, if you can get this some impact offensively out
- 17:30Speaker 6: of him every four or five games, huge bones.
- 17:33Speaker 4: Well, I think one of the reasons why people were
- 17:34Speaker 4: uncomfortable with you wall adnew leaving was because he gave
- 17:37Speaker 4: them something in the offense.
- 17:39Speaker 5: Not just as a returnman.
- 17:40Speaker 4: This is an All Pro Pro Bowl return band who
- 17:43Speaker 4: also clearly can give you something down the field. He's
- 17:46Speaker 4: gonna be a nice addition to there are more weapons
- 17:49Speaker 4: and if Parker Washington deva duber. These kinds of guys
- 17:53Speaker 4: can really give you a lyft over the course of
- 17:55Speaker 4: a seventeen game season.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Yeah, and it seems like Devon may give you.
- 18:00Speaker 6: I love Jamal, great kid and mattered a great deal
- 18:04Speaker 6: to this team.
- 18:05Speaker 1: You sort of had to work to get him the ball.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Ye. Uh.
- 18:08Speaker 6: I don't know if he was a receipt well he
- 18:11Speaker 6: caulls him passes, but overall within the scope of the offense.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Uh. Probably didn't love when he had to be your
- 18:19Speaker 1: third or fourth guy.
- 18:22Speaker 6: During a looks like he may be a little better
- 18:24Speaker 6: within the normal scheme of the offense than Jamal was,
- 18:28Speaker 6: so uh, maybe that's an upgrade.
- 18:30Speaker 1: He's he's fast.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Having options is good. I feel like sometimes you felt
- 18:34Speaker 2: maybe limited by certain things on the offense last year.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Now that there is options that you know are at
- 18:39Speaker 2: your disposal. That has to be big for them. And
- 18:41Speaker 2: then finally we're gonna do the chief's kickoff safety situation.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Doug tried to explain it a little bit as we
- 18:47Speaker 2: learn about this kickoff as things go, the Chief's called
- 18:51Speaker 2: for safety because of taking the ball back, and they
- 18:54Speaker 2: and and the way it's described exactly is kind of.
- 18:58Speaker 6: Under the old rule, this is a touchback. As soon
- 19:01Speaker 6: as the ball crosses into the end zone.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Under the new rules, the ball stays live. Again.
- 19:10Speaker 6: This play is dead right now. Last year, it's still
- 19:13Speaker 6: live until he pulls it back in. So he gave
- 19:15Speaker 6: himself a safety. I think what Doug basically did was,
- 19:20Speaker 6: you know, I know that doesn't feel right. I don't
- 19:23Speaker 6: know why I need to get them not to review it.
- 19:25Speaker 6: So I'm not sure he knew exactly why. It sounds
- 19:28Speaker 6: like Heath and Zach had a general idea that something
- 19:32Speaker 6: was wrong and said, hey, challenge, you know, couldn't challenge
- 19:35Speaker 6: went to the official officials, got it right.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing.
- 19:39Speaker 6: What Doug said in the post game press conference is
- 19:41Speaker 6: probably the most telling thing.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Good that it happened.
- 19:45Speaker 6: Now, and I'll guarantee you every team will be looking
- 19:49Speaker 6: at that in special teams meetings all week saying okay,
- 19:52Speaker 6: here's the first example of why this is. You know,
- 19:55Speaker 6: screwing returners. Make sure you don't do this. So this
- 20:00Speaker 6: teaching point for the league.
- 20:01Speaker 4: Well, Derek Prince or Generic Prince, the running back, just
- 20:04Speaker 4: he watched the bounce and he just walked away.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Clearly he thought that was right muscle memory. He told
- 20:08Speaker 1: him that was a touchback.
- 20:08Speaker 4: It was only mchole Hardman who had the sense ability
- 20:12Speaker 4: to get back there and to you know, at least
- 20:15Speaker 4: try to down it. Otherwise Jaguars will fall on it. Right,
- 20:18Speaker 4: the touchdown for them. You guys were on that conference
- 20:21Speaker 4: call last week where they went through all the rules
- 20:23Speaker 4: with Walt Anderson and we prepared for it on the broadcast,
- 20:26Speaker 4: and yet I mean it was just thirty yard touchback.
- 20:29Speaker 5: Touchback comes to the twenty.
- 20:30Speaker 4: I mean, there's just so many different moving parts and
- 20:33Speaker 4: nobody knows somebody knows them all. I don't, right, not
- 20:36Speaker 4: a lot of people know them all. And this is
- 20:39Speaker 4: going to be an ongoing.
- 20:41Speaker 2: My last all season as we saw it, and the
- 20:43Speaker 2: refs need to kind of consult with everybody and look
- 20:45Speaker 2: over things again.
- 20:46Speaker 3: I think that's important Doug pointing out just look at.
- 20:48Speaker 5: It, saying do you know what that one is?
- 20:51Speaker 6: Because you can certainly see where special teams coaches will
- 20:56Speaker 6: play with the option of trying to have that ball
- 20:58Speaker 6: bounce because all of a sudden, the idea of creating
- 21:02Speaker 6: chaos for the returner and uncertainty in the return about.
- 21:05Speaker 5: What's in the surefield.
- 21:06Speaker 6: You can easily see how that could incorporate if and
- 21:11Speaker 6: I think Heath said it when they first drafted Cam
- 21:13Speaker 6: Little that he had really good control on kicks like
- 21:17Speaker 6: that and was able to get spin on it. I
- 21:19Speaker 6: didn't put two and two together. You can see why
- 21:21Speaker 6: from seeing that play the other night.
- 21:22Speaker 4: By the way, something that came up I don't know
- 21:24Speaker 4: whether you guys noticed it after a safety, how do
- 21:27Speaker 4: you normally kick the ball back with a free kick
- 21:29Speaker 4: from the twenty yard line.
- 21:30Speaker 5: I generally used a punter. They did not do that.
- 21:33Speaker 4: That's the first time that had happened, right, So they
- 21:35Speaker 4: went right to the dynamic kickoff with the kickoff from
- 21:38Speaker 4: the thirty five yard line. So that's a new change
- 21:41Speaker 4: that they didn't talk about on the conference call. And
- 21:44Speaker 4: those are the kinds of little.
- 21:45Speaker 1: Things that I still don't fix on side kick.
- 21:48Speaker 5: You don't consider, well they will next year.
- 21:51Speaker 2: We're going to see as it all goes along. Fun
- 21:52Speaker 2: for all of us, you guys. Coming up after the break,
- 21:55Speaker 2: We're going to do some hot takes after our first
- 21:57Speaker 2: preseason game is under our belt.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Moved the freight.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Moved the freight, Magellan Transport loaded the Cools office space
- 22:07Speaker 2: in Jacksonville. You can apply online at Magellanlogistics dot com.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Welcome back games to Jagsam.
- 22:16Speaker 2: We finally have football to talk about, actual game, real
- 22:20Speaker 2: game football. I know it's the preseason, but we'll take
- 22:21Speaker 2: we can get at this point. What are your hot
- 22:23Speaker 2: takes after the first preseason game, Brian, where are you
- 22:25Speaker 2: going with your.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Well, you know there's ten of eleven is a good night.
- 22:30Speaker 4: The Daguars have eleven players on the roster from that
- 22:33Speaker 4: big franchise record third team member draft class from a
- 22:37Speaker 4: year ago, and ten of them played the other night.
- 22:40Speaker 4: The only one that didn't was Anton Harrison. We know
- 22:42Speaker 4: he hasn't practiced with the concussion the last couple of weeks,
- 22:45Speaker 4: but everyone else made a play at big speed. Brenton
- 22:48Speaker 4: Strange was on a beautiful crossing route and Mac Josie's
- 22:52Speaker 4: missed it right, I mean, otherwise he probably scores you,
- 22:56Speaker 4: Sir Abdula. We talked about Tyler Lacy had a couple
- 22:58Speaker 4: of tackles. Even Eric Allen, who spent last year on
- 23:00Speaker 4: the practice squad as a safety, stepped up and made
- 23:02Speaker 4: place Parker Washington. You just go from you know, the
- 23:05Speaker 4: second all the way down to the eleventh pick, and
- 23:09Speaker 4: all of them are on the field, and all of
- 23:10Speaker 4: them made plays in the preseason.
- 23:13Speaker 5: Call it flashing.
- 23:13Speaker 4: They show you things that you need to see to
- 23:17Speaker 4: believe that they're taking steps forward. They've been a major
- 23:19Speaker 4: storyline of training camp and as of the first preseason
- 23:22Speaker 4: game on Saturday night, they all passed well.
- 23:24Speaker 6: It shows you they're fitting and you know, guess what,
- 23:27Speaker 6: it takes a while in this league for young players
- 23:30Speaker 6: to know their place, to know how to contribute. So
- 23:33Speaker 6: I agree with Brian. I think that's a huge storyline.
- 23:35Speaker 6: And if you see guys like Bigsby Washington out of
- 23:38Speaker 6: that ten, if five matter this year, then you've got
- 23:44Speaker 6: six guys out of that draft class who are contributing
- 23:46Speaker 6: in a major way, you'll definitely take that. I went
- 23:52Speaker 6: with it's gonna take more than two weeks to fix
- 23:56Speaker 6: the running game.
- 23:58Speaker 1: It's my way of not having.
- 24:00Speaker 6: To say relax again because every year after the first
- 24:03Speaker 6: preseason game I get emails from people. You know, I
- 24:06Speaker 6: got one the other night. Devin Lloyd was awful. Yea,
- 24:10Speaker 6: and he played what five play?
- 24:11Speaker 1: I mean more than that, but point being, I think.
- 24:16Speaker 6: Doug after the game had that proper perspective of the preseason.
- 24:21Speaker 6: Week one these days is so close to being a
- 24:24Speaker 6: practice that coaches when they come out of it, they're
- 24:28Speaker 6: not up and down.
- 24:29Speaker 1: There's not the emotion because they know what it is.
- 24:31Speaker 6: We see helmets and uniforms and think this is the
- 24:35Speaker 6: real thing we're watching. There's no game planning, etc. There
- 24:38Speaker 6: was panic over the running game. They didn't run early
- 24:41Speaker 6: in the game. That's not going to look right in
- 24:44Speaker 6: the first couple of preseason games. It's gonna take until
- 24:48Speaker 6: September or October for cohesion to come in.
- 24:50Speaker 4: So well, once again, you're playing with a backup at
- 24:55Speaker 4: left guard, which we did all season last year. Ezra
- 24:58Speaker 4: Cleveland didn't play because the heel injury that slowed him down.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Last week on Travis played eight or nine plays.
- 25:04Speaker 5: Yeah, so that's a timing issue.
- 25:06Speaker 4: Yeah, it's Force told me last week that the running
- 25:09Speaker 4: game thing, it sometimes takes a game or two in
- 25:12Speaker 4: the regular season before you understand what the guy next
- 25:15Speaker 4: to you is doing, especially when you have a brand
- 25:17Speaker 4: new starting center.
- 25:18Speaker 5: So that's going to.
- 25:19Speaker 3: Take some time, and we'll all just take time.
- 25:21Speaker 2: I think for mine, it's a little bit of reference
- 25:24Speaker 2: of last year. So last season officially in the rear
- 25:26Speaker 2: view mirror, easy for us to say obviously a new
- 25:28Speaker 2: season has begun. I think we've all covered enough teams
- 25:31Speaker 2: where sometimes it's the same kind of team rolling themselves
- 25:35Speaker 2: out there. There was obviously a lot of changes and
- 25:38Speaker 2: coaching staff, players brought in, drafted as well. It's different,
- 25:42Speaker 2: it feels different. You'll hear it from the players themselves.
- 25:44Speaker 2: The locker room is different for them, and I think
- 25:46Speaker 2: even just coming out having a fast start showing some
- 25:50Speaker 2: of the issues that were there last year were at
- 25:53Speaker 2: top of mind even that they're addressing that, and Doug
- 25:55Speaker 2: I think had a really poignant offseason point to himself
- 26:00Speaker 2: and realizing, hey, I have to play these young guys more.
- 26:02Speaker 2: We talked about this second year players because I can't
- 26:05Speaker 2: do that again and just go revert back to you know,
- 26:08Speaker 2: running Travis into the ground or whatever. It might be
- 26:10Speaker 2: different players there as well, because when Christian Kirk goes down,
- 26:13Speaker 2: you have to expect Parker Washington to step in. And
- 26:15Speaker 2: he learned that maybe the hard way at the end
- 26:16Speaker 2: of last season.
- 26:17Speaker 4: If you think of last year as you know, like
- 26:19Speaker 4: a piece of paper with a picture on it. It's
- 26:21Speaker 4: not hanging in the locker anymore like it has been
- 26:23Speaker 4: all off season, but it's kind of tucked away where
- 26:25Speaker 4: they can kind of still get to it.
- 26:28Speaker 5: There's still that sense.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Of what we didn't do well last year, you know,
- 26:32Speaker 4: and not in terms of on the field, but off
- 26:34Speaker 4: the field, in the locker room, on the practice field.
- 26:36Speaker 4: What didn't fit right around here, and Trevor talked about
- 26:39Speaker 4: that last week is that has to be a driving force,
- 26:43Speaker 4: but it's not in their face every day. They've changed
- 26:46Speaker 4: the way they do business in the locker room and
- 26:48Speaker 4: it was obvious in camp and obvious on Saturday night
- 26:51Speaker 4: that so far, so good.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I think there.
- 26:57Speaker 6: Is an awareness that it's the sixteen minute, seventeen game season.
- 27:02Speaker 6: I think they all knew that, but I think that's
- 27:04Speaker 6: the thing that's in the front of their mind. It
- 27:07Speaker 6: feels to me like.
- 27:09Speaker 1: A more.
- 27:11Speaker 6: An older team, a more experienced team, a wiser team
- 27:13Speaker 6: of Hey, you know, whatever happened last year, we have
- 27:18Speaker 6: to take this one day at a time, all those
- 27:20Speaker 6: cliches and be pros from now until January and.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Keep it going. So it feels it feels right, it
- 27:29Speaker 1: feels positive.
- 27:30Speaker 6: We'll see what happens in the joint practices, right, I
- 27:33Speaker 6: hope we're about to find we.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Shall say with us here on Jagsam. We'll be right
- 27:36Speaker 2: back as we preview what's going to happen on later
- 27:38Speaker 2: in the week. Jags fans, if you want customized Jaguars

- 27:59Speaker 7: Guy's a great he may and a great guy for
- 28:01Speaker 7: all you guys like listen, young black successful.
- 28:03Speaker 1: He's single, by the way, just let everyone know he
- 28:05Speaker 1: is single. So if you guys need somebody, he's your guy.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Tell you that gave Davis a great wingman, great guy
- 28:11Speaker 2: to have in the wide receiver room with you.
- 28:13Speaker 1: That says a lot right there. I mean, it's nice.
- 28:16Speaker 6: It sort of speaks what he talked about earlier in
- 28:17Speaker 6: the show that they like this kid. People forget when
- 28:20Speaker 6: they come in his first round picks that they are
- 28:22Speaker 6: kids and they're sort of looking around, not knowing what's
- 28:25Speaker 6: going on and not even really sure how to fit
- 28:27Speaker 6: in right like, so, uh yeah, that's a really good sign.
- 28:31Speaker 4: It's great to see Gabe get involved as well with
- 28:33Speaker 4: that twenty yard That was a beautiful thrill by Trevor.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Absolutely all right, we got joint practice coming up on
- 28:38Speaker 2: Wednesday and Thursday, the Bucks are going to be in town.
- 28:40Speaker 3: What are you guys most looking forward to.
- 28:42Speaker 2: I just enjoy kind of the competition, not going against
- 28:44Speaker 2: yourself in practice. I know Doug always says that he
- 28:46Speaker 2: takes these reps almost as seriously, or.
- 28:48Speaker 1: If not more than Yeah, it's important week.
- 28:50Speaker 6: He he really thinks that these are ones where you
- 28:54Speaker 6: can control what.
- 28:55Speaker 1: You're trying to get out of it. You can get
- 28:57Speaker 1: a lot out of it.
- 28:58Speaker 6: And the starters won't play on Saturday because Doug wants
- 29:03Speaker 6: him to be getting this and then it's taken the
- 29:07Speaker 6: place almost of that fourth preseason game. You lost the
- 29:10Speaker 6: reps here matter and then you sort of use Saturday's
- 29:14Speaker 6: game to get a look at the guys who won't
- 29:16Speaker 6: get as many reps this week.
- 29:17Speaker 4: There isn't a bigger challenge to run the football than
- 29:21Speaker 4: Vita Vea in the middle of that defensive line. I mean,
- 29:23Speaker 4: he is massive, quick and strong. This is going to
- 29:28Speaker 4: be a nice test for that interior threesome. Can they
- 29:31Speaker 4: move him and create some seams in short yardage running situations.
- 29:35Speaker 4: A lot of times when you watch that stuff on
- 29:37Speaker 4: the practice field, you're just like, yeah, all right, great,
- 29:39Speaker 4: you know, big guys hitting each other. This week, there's
- 29:42Speaker 4: some real meaning to it with him in the middle
- 29:43Speaker 4: of that thing.
- 29:44Speaker 3: Absolutely gonna be a lot of matchups to watch. Come
- 29:46Speaker 3: out to practice if you can.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Wednesday and Thursday, those are the joint practices with the Bucks.
- 29:51Speaker 2: We'll be live outside at practice for both days joining
- 29:54Speaker 2: me there, so make sure you tune in with us
- 29:56Speaker 2: on Wednesday and Thursday.
- 29:57Speaker 3: See then
