- 0:21flipping it up with me doing the opening.
- 0:22So if you're still tuning in, thanks.
- 0:25But we've got the journey home from here
- 0:28in Murfreesboro.
- 0:29And with them,
- 0:30we have Billy Truesdale and James.
- 0:34I didn't get James's last name.
- 0:36James Little.
- 0:37And they are going to give us a
- 0:39little pitch in about the journey home and
- 0:42some background live.
- 0:43So it should be a fun conversation today.
- 0:45And welcome, guys.
- 0:47I appreciate it.
- 0:48Yeah.
- 0:48I told you I was gonna mess up
- 0:49your name right off the bat.
- 0:50Like I just, it was it.
- 0:51So I did, I did.
- 0:53So I should have never asked is what
- 0:55I shouldn't have done.
- 0:56So, uh, look journey home.
- 0:59I know that y'all help out.
- 1:01people less fortunate in the community.
- 1:03And that's the best way I can say
- 1:04it.
- 1:05But I want y'all to be able to
- 1:06say it.
- 1:07So give me the three-minute elevator
- 1:09pitch.
- 1:10Billy,
- 1:10it looks like you're going to do all
- 1:11the talking.
- 1:11You're smiling.
- 1:12James is like, yeah, let that happen.
- 1:14So fill us in.
- 1:16What do we got going today?
- 1:18Well, the journey home,
- 1:20our primary mission is we're a Christian
- 1:23ministry.
- 1:24We're here to serve the disadvantaged and
- 1:27homeless of Rutherford County.
- 1:29I think that's sometimes part of the pitch
- 1:31that's missed.
- 1:33as we're communicating our message.
- 1:35We're a Rutherford County program,
- 1:37not just Murfreesboro.
- 1:39I wanted to get that out.
- 1:40That's important.
- 1:42Sometimes we forget the outline areas.
- 1:44We just housed a guy from Eagle Wolf
- 1:46the other day, which was pretty neat.
- 1:51We supply practical resources for people
- 1:55to get them back to economic stability is
- 1:59one of our goals.
- 2:00Get their health back in shape and get
- 2:02their housing
- 2:03back where it needs to be.
- 2:06As the executive director told me this
- 2:08morning, those three pieces,
- 2:10economic stability,
- 2:12the health and the housing,
- 2:13it's kind of like a three-legged stool.
- 2:16If you take away any piece of those
- 2:18legs, you've got problems.
- 2:19For sure.
- 2:20You may stand on your own for a
- 2:21while, but you'll lose your footing.
- 2:24For sure.
- 2:24And that's what we're at the Journey Home
- 2:26to do.
- 2:27You know, I made a joke earlier.
- 2:29We have closed on one house and are
- 2:31closing on another house in the next forty
- 2:33eight hours or so.
- 2:35And my wife sent me a text.
- 2:36Congratulations.
- 2:37We're now officially homeless.
- 2:39And it was comical for the moment of
- 2:41where I was.
- 2:42And we're not we're staying with my mom.
- 2:43We've been with my like all our stuff
- 2:45settled.
- 2:46We're fine.
- 2:47But it did put into context because I
- 2:48thought about you guys coming on the show
- 2:50today.
- 2:50And I thought that is for us a
- 2:54joke, you know,
- 2:55just because on paper we're homeless.
- 2:57But there are people out there in our
- 2:59community that are disadvantaged to the
- 3:03point where they don't know.
- 3:06what even the next few hours hold,
- 3:08much less tomorrow or the weekend.
- 3:11And where does the journey home step in
- 3:13with?
- 3:13I know you said you had a guy
- 3:15housed, but where all are we helping him?
- 3:20Are we at a basis where we're doing
- 3:21just meals if they need it?
- 3:23Are we doing a meal program?
- 3:25We're housing folks?
- 3:27Give me the scope of the outreach here.
- 3:30So for a long time,
- 3:31the thought of the journey home when we
- 3:34were over at three or eight West Castle
- 3:35Street and an old butchers slaughterhouse
- 3:39for many years was that we fed people.
- 3:42We gave people a place to shower and
- 3:44we did laundry.
- 3:46Wow.
- 3:47We do that every day for our clients.
- 3:51But there's also a big piece to the
- 3:52journey home that's missed the housing
- 3:56side of things.
- 3:58We take these people that are in trauma
- 4:01and it is traumatic to be homeless.
- 4:02I've been there in two thousand seventeen.
- 4:05I was sleeping on hay bales in Tucson,
- 4:07Arizona.
- 4:07Wow.
- 4:09So I kind of understand that piece.
- 4:11And we we own at the journey home
- 4:14eight properties ourselves.
- 4:16We own eight houses.
- 4:18We sublease twenty three and then we
- 4:21co-manage.
- 4:22I'd like to call it twenty properties
- 4:24through Murfreesboro Housing Authority.
- 4:26OK.
- 4:27Our goal is to take people that are
- 4:32at the bottom who,
- 4:36when I worked at the VA,
- 4:37I used to like to share this message
- 4:39in the jails and in prisons.
- 4:42that have lost hope because to me hope
- 4:45is the easiest thing in the world to
- 4:47lose and the hardest thing to get back.
- 4:50We want to be that beacon of hope
- 4:52for people.
- 4:54So we started the journey home.
- 4:57You've got your people that are
- 5:00chronically homeless that might have a
- 5:02mental disorder or an addiction problem.
- 5:05that are very hard to house.
- 5:07We work with them.
- 5:09They're the ones that come and get meals
- 5:11and get clothing, take the showers.
- 5:15We're starting a new engagement process
- 5:17now to where we start working with them
- 5:19on a more intentional basis.
- 5:21But then you have your people that have
- 5:23life events that may lead them to be
- 5:26homeless.
- 5:28I'll be honest,
- 5:29today if I wrecked my truck,
- 5:33I've got problems.
- 5:35I've got a lot of problems.
- 5:37Because today in this society,
- 5:38and it's not just Rutherford County,
- 5:41affordable housing is hard to come by.
- 5:44When you consider the fact that to get
- 5:47into an apartment in Murfreesboro,
- 5:49it's going to cost you a deposit.
- 5:51um first and maybe last month's rent so
- 5:54you're looking at about three thousand
- 5:56dollars because the average where are you
- 5:58renting that's cheap compared to some of
- 6:00the stuff i've heard well you can't find
- 6:02housing a single bedroom for fourteen
- 6:04about fourteen fifty a month a single
- 6:06bedroom fourteen fifty months yes sir
- 6:11that's unbelievable yeah that's absolutely
- 6:13that's just a wild number considering if
- 6:16you have a
- 6:18what I would consider a regular job,
- 6:20a blue collar job,
- 6:21and you're not making a lot of money
- 6:23and you have a couple of kids,
- 6:26you're looking at a big hit.
- 6:27You're having to come up with four and
- 6:29five thousand dollars just to get into a
- 6:31place to get back on your feet.
- 6:33But you've lost your job because you
- 6:35wrecked your car.
- 6:37And we're here to help fill that gap
- 6:39where we can.
- 6:40And we cannot help everyone.
- 6:42Sure.
- 6:43But we try our best through grants,
- 6:46through donations,
- 6:48to get people rehoused and get them back
- 6:50that economic stability.
- 6:52There's other pieces to the journey home
- 6:54to our great new facility that I love
- 6:56to talk about.
- 6:57Now what's the address for the new
- 6:59facility?
- 6:59The new facility is at old Salem road,
- 7:04not highway road.
- 7:05Okay.
- 7:06Uh,
- 7:06because if you put in old Salem road,
- 7:09it'll send you to metal max.
- 7:11Yeah.
- 7:12Okay.
- 7:13So, well,
- 7:15before we go too much further into what
- 7:19you're doing now,
- 7:21which I think what you guys are doing
- 7:22is incredible.
- 7:25But what I find interesting to me is
- 7:29you mentioned earlier that you've been
- 7:31homeless.
- 7:32You're a veteran as well, right?
- 7:33Yes, sir.
- 7:36We talked pre-show that you're recovering.
- 7:38Yes, sir.
- 7:39Right?
- 7:40What I find interesting for me is more
- 7:44so the why.
- 7:46that you're doing what you do now right
- 7:48it's um i think doing things that impact
- 7:54our community is incredible but the
- 7:56reasons that we truly do those things are
- 8:00what makes the story actually incredible
- 8:04So I would like to step back for
- 8:07a second and go back to let's go
- 8:11back to when you were in service.
- 8:14Right.
- 8:15So how long ago was that?
- 8:18I got out in nineteen ninety four served
- 8:20eight and a half years in the U.S.
- 8:22Navy.
- 8:23We won't hold that against you.
- 8:26The canoe club.
- 8:28I love how the subtle banter between any
- 8:31branch of whatever.
- 8:33And as somebody who has no dog in
- 8:37the fight, so to speak,
- 8:39because we had some guests on at another
- 8:41time that were some Navy guys.
- 8:42And you could tell as soon as you
- 8:44got mentioned, they all kind of,
- 8:45everybody's chest postured a little bit.
- 8:48They're like, hey, wait a minute,
- 8:49you know, Army guy.
- 8:50I just always think that's funny.
- 8:52What I tell people all the time is,
- 8:55I don't actually care what branch you
- 8:58served in.
- 8:59You served, you're my brother,
- 9:01and I will love you no matter what.
- 9:03Not a moment.
- 9:06The moment that somebody tries to say
- 9:09something about you is the moment that all
- 9:12my attention will turn towards you.
- 9:15I never realized that, honestly, Charlie,
- 9:19because I never needed to be a veteran
- 9:22until I got sober,
- 9:23until I had lost everything and was part
- 9:29of my sentence.
- 9:32was to attend the Veterans Treatment
- 9:33Court.
- 9:34And I learned about being a veteran and
- 9:37how important and how deep that is.
- 9:41And I've learned a lot about mental health
- 9:45over the past few years and how you
- 9:49lose yourself when you get out because you
- 9:53lose that brotherhood.
- 9:55And people that haven't been or haven't
- 9:57been in a career like that,
- 9:58I was in law enforcement as well.
- 10:00And that impacted me when I was no
- 10:02longer a law enforcement officer because
- 10:03that brotherhood or sisterhood is there.
- 10:06So twice that was taken away from me.
- 10:09God had other plans for me.
- 10:13I got it since we're on the subject
- 10:15of being in the military.
- 10:18had a conversation today and this may not
- 10:20be a conversation for the radio but i
- 10:23am who i am um we we had
- 10:27a discussion and and i was having this
- 10:29discussion with someone that it was has
- 10:31not been in the military so just to
- 10:34preface that but we were discussing
- 10:37females in combat arms
- 10:41And I said,
- 10:43I do not have a qualm of whether
- 10:48or not there are females that can
- 10:50physically and mentally contribute to a
- 10:53combat arm MOS.
- 10:57What my qualm is with it is if
- 11:00you're on the front lines,
- 11:01and I have not been, okay?
- 11:02I have not been in a war zone.
- 11:05But...
- 11:08I was trained to be in war zones
- 11:11and knowing that the guy to my right
- 11:14and the guy to my left is there
- 11:16to help protect me.
- 11:21If something happened to one of those
- 11:23individuals,
- 11:25the reaction that I would have to my
- 11:27brother in arms sitting next to me,
- 11:30I don't know if it would be different
- 11:33if it was a sister in arms.
- 11:35and how I would react because you don't
- 11:38know how you're gonna react if you have
- 11:40to pull the trigger.
- 11:42If you have to pull your trigger on
- 11:43another human being,
- 11:44you don't know how you're going to react
- 11:46after pulling that trigger.
- 11:47And if that person that is next to
- 11:50you happens to be a female and that
- 11:54person passes in combat situation,
- 12:00How can you move forward from that?
- 12:02And mentally,
- 12:04that is a difficult situation to be in.
- 12:06I don't know how I would react.
- 12:09That's challenging.
- 12:11And I think, boy,
- 12:14you opened up a Pandora's box.
- 12:15We're being recorded.
- 12:18I'm pretty good at that.
- 12:22As a male...
- 12:26It is, at least in my instinct,
- 12:28to be protective of women.
- 12:30Correct.
- 12:32And what I believe would happen with me
- 12:36in my case is if there is a
- 12:42moment of conflict or...
- 12:46firefight, whatever it may be, uh,
- 12:49it would cause hesitation in me to protect
- 12:53her, um,
- 12:55which would lead to other traumatic
- 12:57events, possibly me getting hurt,
- 13:00then getting hurt or my other brothers at
- 13:02arms.
- 13:02Um, it's, uh,
- 13:05I think it's just a male instinct and
- 13:07you can't, it's tough.
- 13:08And we don't have to go into too
- 13:09crazy detail,
- 13:10but I w I had the same opinion.
- 13:12and i was i was uh when something's
- 13:15on my heart i think so many people
- 13:17have got to bring it up have typically
- 13:19thought of that situation of are are women
- 13:26physically able to keep up xyz and i
- 13:29don't think that's the take i think it's
- 13:31much more along the lines of what y'all
- 13:32are saying because
- 13:34I think there's a natural instinct that
- 13:36kicks in at some point.
- 13:37Yeah, look, I mean, my entire life,
- 13:39that's the way I was brought up.
- 13:41That's the way I've been raised.
- 13:42It's funny.
- 13:43I had that conversation at school
- 13:47recently.
- 13:48Had a young man who was saying that
- 13:50he got in trouble a week or so
- 13:51ago.
- 13:51Nope.
- 13:52He didn't get in trouble.
- 13:53Girlfriend got in trouble because one of
- 13:55them told parents they were going to one
- 13:58place.
- 13:58They went to another place.
- 13:59They were still supervised and being
- 14:01responsible,
- 14:01but lied to mom and dad about destination.
- 14:06And I just gave him a quick,
- 14:07I said, Hey, just as, as a girl,
- 14:09dad,
- 14:10make sure you're doing the right things
- 14:11with the girl's parents.
- 14:12I said,
- 14:13that'll get you a lot more speakers,
- 14:14but we didn't get in trouble.
- 14:15I didn't, I didn't do anything wrong.
- 14:17said well you started with the life
- 14:19because your first response is hey babe
- 14:21let's not tick off your parents like you
- 14:23can just be that smooth way like it
- 14:24doesn't have to be and he was kind
- 14:26of and it just happened to be a
- 14:28couple of young ladies from another
- 14:30classroom came to pick something up they
- 14:32overheard our conversation
- 14:34And they're like, yeah, do that.
- 14:37And I think to a certain extent, we,
- 14:40we do have this ingrained thing to protect
- 14:44and to take care of it.
- 14:45Uh, and, uh, you're,
- 14:48you're a father of a daughter and I'm
- 14:50a father of a daughter.
- 14:51I don't know about you, James.
- 14:52He's whatever odd man out.
- 14:54It changes how you look at the world.
- 14:56I mean, it does.
- 14:58And I couldn't do it right.
- 15:00I thought I couldn't do it.
- 15:01And then I got these three and they
- 15:03keep me on my toes and it's wonderful.
- 15:05But I think as as males,
- 15:08we still get this excitement that comes up
- 15:10about us,
- 15:11that there's almost that strong arm of I
- 15:14can I can take care of something in
- 15:16her honor and, you know,
- 15:17that kind of fence.
- 15:18And sometimes you guys take a step back
- 15:19and be like,
- 15:20but
- 15:21I need to allow her to develop and
- 15:23grow from the girl that kind of standpoint
- 15:24and my oldest daughter right now she's
- 15:26going to turn twenty and I don't know
- 15:28how I feel about it and I'm just
- 15:29like I like it it's weird for me
- 15:31and there's an element to it but I
- 15:33watch her come in she's hustling she's got
- 15:35a couple of different little side incomes
- 15:37going on she's got her one main consistent
- 15:39job now she'll text me two or three
- 15:41times a week even if it's just hey
- 15:42you cooking tonight and I'll cook just so
- 15:44she'll come
- 15:45you know that and that kind of thing
- 15:46and so it's a unique experience to be
- 15:49uh just what intrinsically we still are
- 15:52designed to do and to go and and
- 15:55i think that ultimately it comes back
- 15:57around to wanting to help folks and when
- 16:00we when we are serving in any capacity
- 16:03uh i find that to be be quite
- 16:05impressive and kind of just knowing where
- 16:08we are so i didn't want to step
- 16:10on all our toes here but uh it's
- 16:12hard to let you military guys call it
- 16:13because you know we'll get left out
- 16:19Army so I do want to since I
- 16:30got two of them in the room and
- 16:33This is way out of left field My
- 16:37favorite football game Every single year
- 16:41is the Army Navy game.
- 16:42Mm-hmm
- 16:44it's it's the best it's the pageantry it's
- 16:47the the heroism of we're here we're doing
- 16:52this right and it's coming up is it
- 16:55this weekend or next weekend this week
- 16:59this way
- 17:04Of course.
- 17:05It might be a little butt whipping on
- 17:08Saturday.
- 17:09But it is.
- 17:10The midshipmen got it going on.
- 17:12The pageantry behind that.
- 17:13The Navy is just scared every year.
- 17:16Because if they lose,
- 17:17they got to deal with the Marines.
- 17:19Oh, okay.
- 17:20So they come into the game all hyped
- 17:21up and ready to go.
- 17:22And look, it's just a normal day.
- 17:24We don't want to hurt nobody's feelings.
- 17:25Okay.
- 17:26It's just business, right?
- 17:27Yeah, it's just business.
- 17:28Okay.
- 17:28Well, that's...
- 17:31But that is that.
- 17:32No, look, I will tell you,
- 17:34was it last year?
- 17:36Last year,
- 17:38when Army had a shot of actually doing
- 17:43something,
- 17:45was probably one of the only years that
- 17:48I can remember ever that Army had a
- 17:51good football team.
- 17:55And that was it in the story.
- 17:59And it is, uh, one of my,
- 18:02one of my favorite things about whether
- 18:04it's the army or the Navy or whoever,
- 18:07um, in those games,
- 18:12what I find more incredible than anything.
- 18:16is those young men are out there playing
- 18:19a game to get their education to go
- 18:23serve our country and those guys are when
- 18:28you want to talk about what i feel
- 18:30like a a absolutely pure all-american
- 18:35athlete is it's those two football teams
- 18:39because those guys are not playing for
- 18:41fame they're not playing for a scholarship
- 18:44they're not playing for an nil deal
- 18:47they're not playing to go on to the
- 18:49nfl they are playing to go save your
- 18:53life
- 18:54That's what they're playing football.
- 18:56And now that's why it's the best game
- 18:58to me again,
- 18:59with all the pageantry and everything
- 19:00else.
- 19:01And then,
- 19:01and if it just happens to snow,
- 19:03cause that always seems to make it a
- 19:04little bit better for me,
- 19:05but like bucket list stuff, that,
- 19:07that would be a game that would be,
- 19:09and I'm not even, like I said,
- 19:10not military guy.
- 19:11That's definitely bucket list item.
- 19:13I'm a Tennessee fan.
- 19:15Okay.
- 19:16And Tennessee is playing in a music city
- 19:18bowl this year.
- 19:20If you gave me an option to go
- 19:23sit in the nosebleeds of the Army-Navy
- 19:26game or sideline UT game,
- 19:30I'll go to the Army-Navy game every day.
- 19:32Some opportunities.
- 19:33Being young and dumb,
- 19:35I was stationed in Philadelphia when the
- 19:37game used to be at Veterans Stadium.
- 19:39Oh, wow.
- 19:40And I never went.
- 19:43Oh.
- 19:43But, you know, Charlie,
- 19:45something you mentioned there,
- 19:46you talked about service and the
- 19:48brotherhood.
- 19:49And I was thinking about James sitting
- 19:51here.
- 19:55I met James through service.
- 19:59And that brotherhood that I had in the
- 20:01military or being a police officer,
- 20:05I have found that.
- 20:08at a time in my life when I
- 20:09needed it most.
- 20:11And I found it with men and women
- 20:16who are here to serve the greatest that
- 20:20we can have, and that's God.
- 20:23And James has been counsel to me because
- 20:26I'm still broke up here and in here,
- 20:29getting better every day.
- 20:31But I get that through God.
- 20:34and through guys like James that I get
- 20:36to serve with in this ministry and on
- 20:42this wild plan that God has for me
- 20:45in my life.
- 20:45I've been given a great opportunity in the
- 20:49past three months to serve at the Journey
- 20:53Home.
- 20:53And if it wasn't for James and the
- 20:56many others on our board of directors and
- 20:59that work there,
- 21:02i wouldn't be where i am today sure
- 21:04well it's iron sharpens iron you know and
- 21:07that's the great thing about kind of in
- 21:09the military whatever you're doing when
- 21:12you're doing it together and you're kind
- 21:13of developing each other and you're
- 21:15encouraging each other and it's pretty
- 21:18powerful i i would have never thought in
- 21:20a in a hundred years growing up in
- 21:22the last cassis um
- 21:25that God would have let me travel this
- 21:27path that I've been on,
- 21:28and it's been a road.
- 21:29It involved three wives in jail a couple
- 21:33of times.
- 21:34Oh, yeah.
- 21:35Used to put people like me in jail.
- 21:40We call that colorful.
- 21:41Well, and to be angry at God.
- 21:44and not accept him as being in control
- 21:46of my life.
- 21:47But then realizing you had mentioned it
- 21:50earlier,
- 21:51I think before we went on air about
- 21:53having a plan.
- 21:54Yeah.
- 21:55And I used to think that was a
- 21:57sign of weakness that you had a plan.
- 21:59Yeah.
- 21:59Okay.
- 22:00Right.
- 22:02He does.
- 22:03Sure.
- 22:03And I'll tell you about it every day.
- 22:06You are not in control.
- 22:08That is for sure.
- 22:09Let's take a quick break.
- 22:11And when we come back,
- 22:12we're going to talk more about that.
- 22:18I apologize if I talk too much.
- 22:20I get fired up sometimes.
- 22:22Oh, we hadn't even got started.
- 22:25You're going to get us both on the
- 22:26road.
- 22:27Welcome back, guys.
- 22:28Single Tree Nation.
- 22:29Back with Charlie and Billy and James from
- 22:33The Journey Home.
- 22:35And interesting conversation already.
- 22:38I am reminded just through what y'all said
- 22:43right before the break,
- 22:44you were talking about the brotherhood and
- 22:46iron sharpens iron.
- 22:48we don't realize how close we get to
- 22:49people or how close they get to us,
- 22:53uh,
- 22:53until sometimes then that one thing will
- 22:56kind of get said or kind of mentioned.
- 22:58And what I bring it up is specific
- 23:00between Charlie and I, uh, few weeks ago,
- 23:04I was in my little rut and kind
- 23:06of, uh,
- 23:07and he comes up to me and he's
- 23:09like, Hey, you good?
- 23:10And it was a text.
- 23:12And then it followed when we saw each
- 23:13other and I was like, yeah,
- 23:14why he goes, I could tell.
- 23:16And.
- 23:18You need,
- 23:19and I think there are people in our
- 23:20lives, if we're willing to listen,
- 23:22who can tell to whatever extent.
- 23:26I had not shared anything openly with him,
- 23:28hadn't gone off about, hey,
- 23:29here's what it all is.
- 23:31He just knew because the way,
- 23:34literally he said it was the way you
- 23:35were texting.
- 23:37And I thought if there's people that can
- 23:39tell me about the way I'm texting, like,
- 23:40well, what are we doing now?
- 23:42And, uh,
- 23:43cause that's what certainly oftentimes we
- 23:44think that's just the wife that'll know
- 23:46that,
- 23:46or that's just a mother or a father.
- 23:49And here you have somebody you've allowed
- 23:50to get close with and.
- 23:52You talk about the iron sharpens iron.
- 23:53I actually saw that phrase and that Bible
- 23:55verse just about a week ago.
- 23:58And I thought to myself,
- 23:59how many times are we sharpening each
- 24:02other and not even realizing it?
- 24:04So from that aspect, I do appreciate you.
- 24:07And I know me and you share a
- 24:08lot of stuff off of air.
- 24:09I love your face.
- 24:12It's a hard one to like,
- 24:13so I'll take what I can get.
- 24:15I will tell you that it is much
- 24:17better with a beard.
- 24:18Oh, man.
- 24:19I have seen some of those clips.
- 24:23I had a student tell me that goes,
- 24:24Hey, Mr. Wells.
- 24:26I said, yeah, he goes,
- 24:26I'm glad it's back.
- 24:27That's like me too.
- 24:30Oh, okay.
- 24:31So back in,
- 24:33I forget the date we did that.
- 24:34Was that September?
- 24:36Uh, end of September, September,
- 24:39September, September,
- 24:40we had opportunity to raise some money for
- 24:43uh minutes wisely and a local it was
- 24:46the first week of september okay and um
- 24:49we were helping raise some money for they
- 24:51were helping raise some money for young
- 24:52man i just happened to be in the
- 24:53parking lot having a good time hanging out
- 24:54kind of seeing folks right and uh charlie
- 24:59comes up and he's just talking like he
- 25:01does and the band had stopped for just
- 25:03a moment he's like hey just uh just
- 25:05so you all know anybody that uh
- 25:08Uh,
- 25:09pledges much I'll shave my beard and he
- 25:11comes off the stage and I was like,
- 25:12Hey, you know what?
- 25:14Double it.
- 25:14I'll do it too.
- 25:16And five, it couldn't have been,
- 25:18it felt like seconds.
- 25:19Now looking back at it,
- 25:21somebody comes up and goes like, Hey,
- 25:23somebody made the donation.
- 25:24And I remember thinking there's no way
- 25:26nobody's going to do it.
- 25:27not only did they make the donation, uh,
- 25:30somebody had clippers on site.
- 25:31And so now the benefit of this,
- 25:34that was really cool.
- 25:35The young man that we were trying to
- 25:37raise money for is, uh, uh,
- 25:38I believe he's nine, nine years old, um,
- 25:41brain tumor, um, Mason Asher, Mason Asher.
- 25:45And he,
- 25:46he was there and he got to help
- 25:49shave Charlie's beard.
- 25:50And when you get to realize that, man,
- 25:53that's just freaking hair, like who cares?
- 25:56Uh, but, um,
- 25:57that being said um vanity included i'm
- 26:01glad to have my beard back but mason
- 26:04definitely deserved that and he got a
- 26:06great deal out of it they had set
- 26:07minutes wisely set the family up with a
- 26:10trip to disney world and he had wanted
- 26:11to get one of the custom lightsabers and
- 26:13they got the whole package and they got
- 26:14everybody to pitch stuff in and
- 26:16uh and helped him out with some bills
- 26:17and stuff and just absolutely phenomenal
- 26:19and it was a night worth having and
- 26:22but it was shocking to see my kids
- 26:23faces and i i i got to see
- 26:26his wife's response that was the best
- 26:28response few of those videos so people
- 26:31doing that yeah so she wouldn't talk to
- 26:33me for
- 26:35Well,
- 26:35I noticed a difference today and I wasn't
- 26:38going to say anything.
- 26:39Yeah, it's a lot shorter.
- 26:40It's just now coming back to what it
- 26:41needs to be.
- 26:42It's just now to where I look.
- 26:45I went to my son's basketball game last
- 26:47night and one of the kids on my
- 26:49middle child's baseball team happened to
- 26:51be there.
- 26:52And I haven't seen them since I did
- 26:54it.
- 26:56I saw them,
- 26:57I think the week after I cut it
- 26:59off and he walks up to me in
- 27:01the basketball game and goes,
- 27:03thank goodness.
- 27:04And I went, what are you talking about?
- 27:07He goes, your face,
- 27:10it's starting to look normal.
- 27:12There's a status quo for what people get
- 27:14used to.
- 27:15And when it gets broken,
- 27:16especially like in life,
- 27:17I can only imagine if you think you're
- 27:19used to driving my car and I go
- 27:20to my job and I do whatever.
- 27:22and then you hit that hiccup you're
- 27:23talking about earlier um i'm thankful for
- 27:25places like journey home that that do that
- 27:28so there's so many people that are just
- 27:30living on the fringe right there getting
- 27:32by and if they have one life event
- 27:36that probably would affect us to some
- 27:39degree it's it it can really disrupt their
- 27:43world right now they're living in their
- 27:44car with their kids
- 27:48I mean, their car gets repossessed.
- 27:50Then what?
- 27:53I mean,
- 27:53it's crazy at the scenarios that happen
- 27:57every day to our neighbors right here in
- 27:59our community.
- 28:01Another big thing about the journey home,
- 28:02and James brought up a piece that's really
- 28:04near and dear to our heart,
- 28:05is the kids and helping break the cycle
- 28:10of homelessness.
- 28:11Sure.
- 28:12You know, sometimes...
- 28:15trauma and chaos become the norm.
- 28:19Well,
- 28:19we try to bring the peace to the
- 28:21chaos through Christ the best we can.
- 28:25And part of the journey home,
- 28:26one of the, you know,
- 28:27you mentioned the new facility that we
- 28:29built, if you don't mind,
- 28:30I'd talk about that.
- 28:31No, plug it.
- 28:32Absolutely.
- 28:32This wonderful,
- 28:33wonderful community we live in.
- 28:36We built a six point five million dollar
- 28:38facility
- 28:39off of donations that right there says
- 28:44enough ninety thousand dollars under
- 28:46budget yeah not one penny of government
- 28:49money it all came from our community i
- 28:53mean we have a great community absolutely
- 28:56caring people, giving people.
- 28:59They volunteer their time,
- 29:00their resources.
- 29:01It's amazing.
- 29:02It really is.
- 29:03And a big part of building this new
- 29:06facility was the ten interim family
- 29:10housing units.
- 29:11We have basically, uh,
- 29:13ten hotel rooms in our facilities that are
- 29:16for families that are homeless.
- 29:18A mom with kids,
- 29:19a mom and dad with kids,
- 29:20a dad with kids that we can house
- 29:23them there and get them those three pieces
- 29:25back or help them get those three pieces
- 29:27back,
- 29:27walk with them to get the economic
- 29:29stability, um, to get, to get their, uh,
- 29:34their health back in order.
- 29:36Um, and that's,
- 29:37that's another wonderful piece that we
- 29:39have, um,
- 29:42there that a lot of people don't know
- 29:44about um we have a health and wellness
- 29:46unit at our facility before you go to
- 29:48that let me say something because this was
- 29:50something that was enlightening to me when
- 29:52i first started serving at the journey
- 29:54home in our community um there were just
- 29:58there's just a couple of emergency housing
- 30:01units for families for families
- 30:03And if you have a teenage son, say,
- 30:07thirteen, if you're a single mom,
- 30:08you're out there,
- 30:09you're homeless with your kids.
- 30:10You've got a thirteen year old son.
- 30:12He can't stay at the family shelter with
- 30:14you.
- 30:15He has to go to the men's shelter.
- 30:17So now you're faced with this this
- 30:19at thirteen yeah at thirteen and i'm like
- 30:22i'm a dad a boy dad you know
- 30:24and i'm thinking i could not imagine that
- 30:27you know there's nowhere for her to go
- 30:29and keep the family unit together so not
- 30:31only have they been traumatized by
- 30:32whatever life situation now you throw this
- 30:35on top of it you're splitting the family
- 30:37up even more it's traumatizing and they're
- 30:39going to i wonder why that is but
- 30:42why do you take a thirteen-year-old boy
- 30:43away from his family um
- 30:46and make him go to a totally different
- 30:48place.
- 30:48I'm going to ask that in a different
- 30:50way.
- 30:50Is that a legal ramification or is that
- 30:53worries of, of just situational?
- 30:57Uh, are there, you know what I'm saying?
- 31:00Or is that just a protocol that was
- 31:02developed and we stuck it and never really
- 31:04revisited it?
- 31:05It probably depends on each organization I
- 31:07would say in the rules that they set.
- 31:09Okay.
- 31:10Yeah.
- 31:10Um, but,
- 31:13what that'll what that lends to though is
- 31:16them going back to their car and them
- 31:18not taking help because they don't want to
- 31:20split up the family sure absolutely right
- 31:22yeah um in in this time of the
- 31:24year um you guys may not be aware
- 31:27but tonight it's going to be really cold
- 31:29yeah it's going to be
- 31:32So one of the programs that the Journey
- 31:35Home sponsors is the Coldest Nights
- 31:36program.
- 31:38Any night between November the fifteenth
- 31:40and March the fifteenth, every year,
- 31:42we open the shelter at First Baptist
- 31:44Church on Main Street in St.
- 31:46Paul's for men and women.
- 31:50which it's a huge lifesaver this time of
- 31:53the year.
- 31:54You don't hear of people dying in
- 31:56Murfreesboro from freezing to death.
- 32:00And one of the programs that's been
- 32:03around, I think since, is this program.
- 32:08But we've been faced with that,
- 32:10with a mom come in with a son,
- 32:13and you can't split them up.
- 32:14Well,
- 32:15we have funds through donations and grants
- 32:17where we can find emergency shelter for
- 32:19them or we can get them in a
- 32:20hotel room in those situations.
- 32:23But with these family housing units,
- 32:25we get them into these units.
- 32:27And our goal is, thirty, sixty,
- 32:29ninety days, hopefully,
- 32:31to get them in there, get their documents.
- 32:33When you're homeless and you have all this
- 32:35trauma going on, you lose your documents.
- 32:37Well,
- 32:37the most important thing you have is your
- 32:39documentation.
- 32:41I can't imagine if you lost your driver's
- 32:42license what you couldn't do without that.
- 32:44I drove for seven years without one.
- 32:46A little bit of a different scenario,
- 32:49I do believe.
- 32:51Just slightly.
- 32:55But that's our goal is to get them
- 32:57in there, get them safe, minister to them,
- 33:02love on them,
- 33:03show the kids that there's a different way
- 33:05to life,
- 33:07and to help them find
- 33:10a way to become productive citizens of our
- 33:13community.
- 33:15And it's temporary.
- 33:16It's a temporary emergency housing.
- 33:18So we can put them there,
- 33:19get them off the street,
- 33:20keep them together, safe,
- 33:23and then we can work on trying to
- 33:25find a more permanent solution for them,
- 33:27put them into that more permanent
- 33:29solution,
- 33:29and then it frees up space for another
- 33:31family.
- 33:31And it's a cost-effective solution as
- 33:34well.
- 33:34And we can talk about permanent supportive
- 33:36housing later on if you want.
- 33:38But we can get them in there,
- 33:40stabilize them in our facility to where it
- 33:42would cost us.
- 33:45I just put a lady in a hotel
- 33:46last week and
- 33:48And a hotel that I probably wouldn't stay
- 33:50in with my fiance.
- 33:52And it cost us ninety six dollars a
- 33:54night during the week.
- 33:55And the price went up on the weekend.
- 33:58But now we've got this wonderful facility
- 34:00where we can use those funds for other
- 34:02things to help pay for deposits,
- 34:06help repair cars and to get people back
- 34:09to where they need to be.
- 34:10Yeah.
- 34:12I'm going to step into,
- 34:13you mentioned your fiance and I'm going to
- 34:15step into the personal side of your life.
- 34:17Cause you brought up earlier that element
- 34:19of being homeless and being able to speak
- 34:22to,
- 34:24to that with people who may be in
- 34:25that situation.
- 34:27Uh, your background is lively and I,
- 34:31you know, yeah.
- 34:38Well done.
- 34:42How does that,
- 34:43when you're sitting across the table,
- 34:45when you're sitting on the park bench,
- 34:46when you're sitting just in the facility
- 34:48with somebody and like,
- 34:50you wouldn't understand.
- 34:52And the moment that you're like, Hey,
- 34:54hold up, bet you I do.
- 34:58What kind of connection
- 35:00You mentioned pre-show that you've held
- 35:03jobs in your life,
- 35:04but this is the first job that God's
- 35:06called you to.
- 35:07But how many of those other situations
- 35:10that you were in have allowed you to
- 35:12speak to these people?
- 35:13And what kind of connectivity does that
- 35:15give you?
- 35:15Because you, look, let's be honest.
- 35:17There's probably people on y'all's board
- 35:19and stuff that they've never had to deal
- 35:20with any of those issues.
- 35:22But then here's our lead guy who's like,
- 35:24check, got that one, got that one,
- 35:26got the, you know.
- 35:27Where does that lend you to having some
- 35:29street cred, if you will?
- 35:32It's helped out in so many ways.
- 35:37When you're open and honest with people,
- 35:42I think it leads to building a
- 35:43relationship to know that they're not
- 35:46alone.
- 35:47That's the biggest challenge I faced when
- 35:50I was battling depression.
- 35:52alcoholism every day, um, was I was alone.
- 35:57I had no one, but if I,
- 35:59I can share with them that I have
- 36:01been in your shoes and that my problem
- 36:04started at childhood through childhood
- 36:07trauma.
- 36:07And,
- 36:08and I can walk those steps openly and
- 36:10honestly with them and they can see I
- 36:14am
- 36:18I try to be a bright light to
- 36:19show them that I have been in your
- 36:21shoes and this is how I've been in
- 36:23your shoes.
- 36:24This is what I have done.
- 36:26This is how I have hurt people.
- 36:29But look at today.
- 36:31I have guys less financially today than
- 36:35I've ever had.
- 36:36I had six figure jobs.
- 36:38My last job with the US government,
- 36:40well prior to the VA,
- 36:42was I sat on the ninth floor of
- 36:43National Place in Washington DC and I
- 36:46looked at the White House.
- 36:49And I lost all of that for two
- 36:51reasons,
- 36:52alcoholism and lack of Jesus in my life.
- 36:56And I share that with people and I
- 36:58share with them what that will get you
- 37:00if you let God in your life and
- 37:02you're open and honest about who you are,
- 37:04what you are,
- 37:06And you lean on people.
- 37:07A hard thing,
- 37:08we talked about veterans and dealing with
- 37:13females in life.
- 37:15The hardest thing I ever had to do
- 37:16was ask for help.
- 37:18And the second hardest thing I ever had
- 37:20to do was accept that help because I
- 37:23didn't need help because I was me.
- 37:27I was a veteran.
- 37:29I was a SWAT officer.
- 37:30I was a police officer.
- 37:31I've been places and done things a lot
- 37:33of people haven't.
- 37:34I couldn't beat alcohol.
- 37:37It beat me.
- 37:38I quit.
- 37:39I give up.
- 37:42And I just share that with people.
- 37:44And I smile because my yesterdays are
- 37:47funny.
- 37:49They are to me,
- 37:50but my yesterdays are yesterday.
- 37:54you mentioned a while ago feeling down or
- 37:57blue about something i have pity parties
- 37:59today uh in aaa that's what they call
- 38:02them okay sorry for myself yeah that's
- 38:04beat me um but i i know through
- 38:07counseling and i've been to a lot of
- 38:08counseling um that i have to tell myself
- 38:12two things yesterday is yesterday and i
- 38:16share that with people do you find
- 38:19yourself
- 38:22looking back and I went through a period
- 38:26of life where I wasn't walking the way
- 38:29I should, my relationship with the Lord.
- 38:30And I,
- 38:31I made some decisions that were very, um,
- 38:35not what I would have wanted to do
- 38:36given the time.
- 38:39But looking back, I literally,
- 38:42I told this to my mom the other
- 38:43day, if you get me worked up crying,
- 38:45I'm going to,
- 38:49I look back and it literally feels like,
- 38:53seems like, looks like a different person.
- 38:58Like I'm not crazy, right?
- 38:59Like you're, you're, you're thinking like,
- 39:02man, I'm going to tell you one thing.
- 39:04You cry.
- 39:06Being vulnerable is one of the strongest
- 39:08things you can do.
- 39:09I got no problem crying.
- 39:10I just don't want to do it on
- 39:11air.
- 39:15It wouldn't be the first time.
- 39:18I look back at my yesterdays.
- 39:20Um,
- 39:22I was not a bad person and I
- 39:24used to judge myself as being bad.
- 39:27Um,
- 39:28I still have a lot of regrets today,
- 39:32but that's yesterday.
- 39:33That's yesterday.
- 39:34I don't recognize myself anymore.
- 39:38I remember what I did.
- 39:40Um, my sister gave me, um,
- 39:46works at the sheriff's department here.
- 39:47And for my fifth year of sobriety,
- 39:49she sent me my booking photo from nine
- 39:51four.
- 39:52Well,
- 39:52I still share that because that's who I
- 39:55used to be.
- 39:57I broke a lot of relationships over those
- 40:00times.
- 40:01Um, I can't make those better.
- 40:04Um,
- 40:05there's a lot of relationships now that I
- 40:08don't have with people because I have
- 40:10changed.
- 40:12They didn't.
- 40:13Um,
- 40:16But go back to what you asked.
- 40:19I feel like with the background that Billy
- 40:23has and you're talking to somebody who is
- 40:26in need of help,
- 40:28it can give them hope.
- 40:30And that's what you're really trying to do
- 40:31is give people hope so they can pick
- 40:34their self up and start moving forward.
- 40:36Do you find it's not just the hope?
- 40:39It's for me, this is my personal opinion.
- 40:46Hope is amazing,
- 40:48but it's empty without action.
- 40:50Right.
- 40:52if you don't have the action to back
- 40:53it up,
- 40:55false hope is just as bad as not
- 40:57having hope.
- 41:00If there's action behind that hope,
- 41:01then it becomes something that can fulfill
- 41:04people and help people move forward with
- 41:06things.
- 41:07And I feel like what you guys are
- 41:09doing, from hearing you talk,
- 41:12I'm not an expert on all things journey
- 41:14home.
- 41:14You guys are.
- 41:16But from hearing you guys talk and what
- 41:17you guys are doing and what you have
- 41:19done already,
- 41:20the hope is just a part of it
- 41:23it's the actions that help you and you
- 41:25talk about the three legs and the pillars
- 41:27and all the things that you have to
- 41:28do to accomplish to get get the car
- 41:31back on the road to be able to
- 41:32go get the job to go get those
- 41:33other things the hope is the journey home
- 41:38itself
- 41:39and making that contact the action of
- 41:42doing all of that is what fulfills that
- 41:44hope which drives people to be successful
- 41:48in not becoming homeless again or getting
- 41:52out of being homeless
- 41:54You know, as a board member,
- 41:57this is my community.
- 41:58This is where I grew up.
- 42:00And I've served, you know,
- 42:01in emergency services, you know,
- 42:03in the past as a volunteer.
- 42:07You know, so I care about my community.
- 42:10And I'm in real estate.
- 42:11So I know from my chair in real
- 42:15estate.
- 42:16Some of the things we do causes housing
- 42:20issues because you take homes that are in
- 42:23disrepair and, you know, a bad area,
- 42:27which is an affordable house for some
- 42:29people.
- 42:30You know, we buy it,
- 42:31we fix it up,
- 42:32we make it better for the community,
- 42:35better for the neighborhood,
- 42:36but it also brings the price of the
- 42:38home up.
- 42:39And you take a unit that could have
- 42:41been affordable housing out.
- 42:48I'm going to somewhat disagree with you.
- 42:53I don't believe taking a home that is
- 42:56in disrepair and making it nicer, better,
- 43:01livable, whatever.
- 43:03Yes, it increases the value of the home,
- 43:05sure.
- 43:08But I don't think that hurts the
- 43:09community.
- 43:10What I think has hurt our community from
- 43:12a standpoint is multifaceted.
- 43:16And it's some of the things that I
- 43:17talk about that our community,
- 43:19and I can take all the backlash from
- 43:21anybody who wants to step up to the
- 43:23plate and give it to me.
- 43:26We need to stop worrying about...
- 43:28development in our community and start
- 43:32worrying about infrastructure.
- 43:34We need to stop worrying about how we
- 43:37are going to drive more retail space and
- 43:40more housing into the community and worry
- 43:43about how we are going to put more
- 43:45money into our law enforcement.
- 43:47We need to worry about how we are
- 43:49going to help our teachers and our
- 43:51education department in Rutherford County
- 43:54versus trying to get political points and
- 43:57being whatever you're trying to go for in
- 44:01your political career.
- 44:02And I have built a reputation for.
- 44:07About our school board specifically.
- 44:11I'm sorry.
- 44:13Nobody's heard that before.
- 44:15But, you know, real estate, yes.
- 44:21Doing those things can cause prices to go
- 44:23up.
- 44:24Sure.
- 44:25But flipping a house and making it nicer
- 44:29is not going to cause us to go
- 44:31down that road.
- 44:32I know for me,
- 44:33it was like I need to be involved
- 44:35in trying to help the people who are
- 44:37on the fringe.
- 44:39I can't just be over here.
- 44:41I've also got to be a part of
- 44:42the solution in our community.
- 44:44for sure and so for me that was
- 44:46the incentive to start serving at the
- 44:49journey home yeah and um and i know
- 44:51last year we we embarked um on a
- 44:57scientific study that we did with a group
- 45:00of other non-profits
- 45:02uh, for nine months and we,
- 45:03we analyzed our housing program.
- 45:06And part of that, uh,
- 45:08it was a very scientific approach,
- 45:09but part of it was interviewing our
- 45:11clients one-on-one.
- 45:13So as a board member,
- 45:15I got to sit down with our clients,
- 45:16which I don't get to do often,
- 45:18you know, I mean,
- 45:19that's the staff that's there every day.
- 45:21And so I got to listen, um,
- 45:25to those
- 45:26And it was powerful.
- 45:29I mean, one guy I talked to,
- 45:31he was like, I've worked my whole life.
- 45:33I've never been in need of anything.
- 45:36I got,
- 45:38he got some type of disease that affected
- 45:42him.
- 45:42He could no longer work.
- 45:44And he's living in his truck.
- 45:46He's still trying to go and do,
- 45:48but he can't afford a house.
- 45:50He couldn't afford all these things.
- 45:52He would put himself in a hotel every
- 45:53once in a while.
- 45:54He didn't have a clue who the journey
- 45:56home was.
- 45:56He didn't even know how to pick himself
- 45:58up and try to find a solution.
- 46:01How do you guys from a...
- 46:05lack of a better wording,
- 46:05market the journey home.
- 46:07Like we, we talk,
- 46:08we were talking about earlier today.
- 46:09We talk about it quite often, you know,
- 46:12storytelling is, is the new yellow pages.
- 46:15Right.
- 46:16Um, but being in, in, in,
- 46:19in a previous show, we had a, uh,
- 46:22professional marketer on,
- 46:24and it's two sided, right?
- 46:26You have to do the in-person stuff.
- 46:28And when your clientele for lack of better
- 46:32wording, uh, they, uh,
- 46:34probably don't have a cell phone and wifi
- 46:37and a TV to watch, right?
- 46:39Because you're trying to help them get out
- 46:41of that.
- 46:42So how do you,
- 46:42how do you reach those people to find
- 46:44you?
- 46:46Well,
- 46:47that community is it's it's its own
- 46:51telecommunication network word gets
- 46:53around.
- 46:54Um,
- 46:55the one thing you ask about marketing the
- 46:58journey home, um,
- 46:59We were a real quiet organization for
- 47:02many, many years.
- 47:03A lot of people only knew of that
- 47:06place on Castle Street that fed people and
- 47:09all the homeless people hung out at.
- 47:11Literally,
- 47:11it's all I thought you did was feed
- 47:13people.
- 47:13You've been here how long?
- 47:15I grew up.
- 47:15I've been here since nineteen eighty four.
- 47:17I mean, of my forty six years,
- 47:20I've been here, you know,
- 47:21forty two of them or whatever the number
- 47:23is.
- 47:23So our executive director, Scott Foster,
- 47:26that founded the journey home back about
- 47:27seventeen or eighteen years ago,
- 47:30wasn't into marketing,
- 47:34wasn't telling the word of the journey
- 47:36home out loud.
- 47:40We decided to start this capital campaign
- 47:42and found out that was one of our
- 47:44shortcomings that people didn't know about
- 47:48us, didn't know what we did.
- 47:50And we found it's doing things like this,
- 47:52just here talking to you guys,
- 47:53talking at restaurants.
- 47:55We have a volunteer coordinator that goes
- 47:57out in the community now,
- 47:59our development team.
- 48:00And we've got a wonderful team of
- 48:02volunteers from business leaders across
- 48:04the community.
- 48:05James go to different events to tell
- 48:09people what we do.
- 48:11We share it with our faith leaders.
- 48:13We're embedded in churches.
- 48:15And that's the way the word is spread.
- 48:18People naturally flock to church to get
- 48:22support, to get benevolence.
- 48:25And they're pushing people our direction
- 48:27now.
- 48:28Well, and when I talked to my pastor,
- 48:30he didn't know about the journey home.
- 48:32And I went to him and I said,
- 48:33listen,
- 48:33we've got people who come to our church
- 48:35and need help.
- 48:37We don't know if they are legitimate or
- 48:39not.
- 48:40And so we're always faced with this
- 48:41struggle because we have limited
- 48:43resources.
- 48:43You want to truly help people.
- 48:46it's not our job to vet those people.
- 48:49Right.
- 48:49And I said,
- 48:49what we need to do as a church
- 48:51is support the journey home because they
- 48:53know how to vet them and they know
- 48:55that that money that we're spending there
- 49:00is going to actually help people,
- 49:01you know,
- 49:02because they're they're doing the work of
- 49:03that.
- 49:04And so our faith community here in
- 49:07Murfreesboro, Rutherford County,
- 49:09they're our backbone.
- 49:11Yeah, they are our backbone.
- 49:13I'm in a wonderful church
- 49:15Every day I see people from my church
- 49:19in that building.
- 49:20Nice.
- 49:20Which is amazing.
- 49:23Let's take a quick break and then we'll
- 49:26come back and mack your beans.
- 49:32Welcome back guys.
- 49:33Uh, Billy James journey home.
- 49:36It's been a wonderful conversation and,
- 49:39and, but we, we have a segment that,
- 49:43uh,
- 49:43we do on every show and it's a,
- 49:45this or that.
- 49:46And so the first part will be twofold
- 49:48for, for both of you.
- 49:50But my, my Mac or beans is,
- 49:53is zeroed in specifically on you.
- 49:55So we'll get to enjoy that.
- 49:57But, uh, you go to a barbecue restaurant.
- 50:00Typically there's two sides.
- 50:02You sit down, waitress comes.
- 50:05Are you getting the baked beans or are
- 50:07you getting the macaroni and cheese?
- 50:10I'm getting the baked beans.
- 50:11I'm going Mac.
- 50:15Straight up Mac.
- 50:15Didn't even hesitate.
- 50:16What if it's bad Mac?
- 50:18I'll tell you.
- 50:19Okay.
- 50:20There's one restaurant here in
- 50:21Murfreesboro.
- 50:22Okay.
- 50:24So it's funny.
- 50:26And just a quick side note of this.
- 50:28My,
- 50:28my mother's church had their little
- 50:30potluck this week for the Christmas
- 50:31potluck thing.
- 50:32And she brought home some leftovers.
- 50:34When I was kind of raiding what she
- 50:36had in there,
- 50:36some of it was just taught.
- 50:37I mean, cause a good old Baptist church,
- 50:39like there's a good side to all it.
- 50:41Right.
- 50:42And I opened that pan of Mac and
- 50:44beans and I said, mom, who did this?
- 50:47She goes, I don't know.
- 50:48I said, well, they can keep it.
- 50:50And I felt a little bit judgy for
- 50:51the moment,
- 50:52but it wasn't like your typical Baptist
- 50:54church, Mac or beans.
- 50:55And I was like, eh,
- 50:56so it took me off a little bit.
- 50:57So.
- 50:58How do you think I feel when I
- 50:59go to my in-laws for Thanksgiving?
- 51:03Here's what I think is funny about that.
- 51:06I've given too much thought here recently
- 51:08to restaurant operators and owners,
- 51:11especially small business,
- 51:12not corporate stuff.
- 51:15What's it like when you go to a
- 51:19back home meal?
- 51:20It's a holiday meal.
- 51:21It's a family, you know,
- 51:22somebody's birthday and the food ain't
- 51:25that great.
- 51:26You know what I'm saying?
- 51:28I would think most restaurant operators or
- 51:31owners are used to a really good meal,
- 51:34or they know where to get a really
- 51:36good meal.
- 51:36They've got a little bit of a standard,
- 51:37right?
- 51:38I would tell you that.
- 51:39I don't want to get lost on the
- 51:40mac and beans here.
- 51:42My family in my house,
- 51:45I cook Thanksgiving twice.
- 51:46Okay.
- 51:47So it's pretty good.
- 51:50Not tooting my own horn,
- 51:52but it's pretty tasty.
- 51:54You should.
- 51:55I'd eat that.
- 51:59I cook a turkey for my in-laws' house
- 52:01when we go down there,
- 52:02and I cook a turkey for my house
- 52:04for my side of the family.
- 52:05And my wife typically makes the sides for
- 52:08both.
- 52:09So our family meal is exactly what we're
- 52:13looking for.
- 52:16I've been to some friends givings that
- 52:24well said that were not plate.
- 52:27Wasn't full.
- 52:28Hold the plate was full,
- 52:32but it didn't quite get cleaned.
- 52:34Now I wasn't this year.
- 52:36We went to a friend's giving and the
- 52:37food was pretty dang good.
- 52:39Good.
- 52:39Good.
- 52:40You know,
- 52:40in the past I've been to some that
- 52:42were, um,
- 52:44Yeah.
- 52:44Interesting.
- 52:46Well, Billy,
- 52:47you're this or that you and I are
- 52:49friends on social media.
- 52:52Some of my very favorite posts.
- 52:55Are you in a deer blind or a
- 52:58cornfield or whatever,
- 52:59and just your appreciation for what the
- 53:01world specifically the Lord has given you
- 53:04that morning,
- 53:04even when you don't get a deer,
- 53:08would you rather.
- 53:11whether it be serving at the journey home
- 53:15serving okay every day of the week yeah
- 53:21now my retort to that is does the
- 53:25blind give you the sight to serve it
- 53:30it
- 53:31It is my time with God,
- 53:33just me and him.
- 53:36And through sobriety,
- 53:38and through sobriety alone,
- 53:39because of him,
- 53:41I am able to see things today I've
- 53:43never seen.
- 53:44Amen to that.
- 53:45It's funny, this morning,
- 53:50the sunrise this morning was perfect.
- 53:51There was.
- 53:52And from my mother's back porch,
- 53:54you could see just enough over the trees.
- 53:56It's not like picturesque.
- 53:57It's not going to wind up on the
- 53:58news or anywhere.
- 53:59But, like, it hits just right, right?
- 54:02And we're staying with mom while we're
- 54:04switching the houses and stuff.
- 54:05And I walked out,
- 54:06and I had that cup of coffee,
- 54:07and I just saw that.
- 54:09And in that moment, it's, you know,
- 54:11six-thirty this morning,
- 54:12and I thought about you.
- 54:14Because the number of times you've had
- 54:16that post, but then each time,
- 54:18like you said,
- 54:19that gives you – it's like –
- 54:21your reflection on that time with God.
- 54:23And I don't want to step on your
- 54:24toes and hope I'm not sharing too much
- 54:26personally about what you like to do,
- 54:27but when you're sitting there and you're
- 54:30able to reflect on a day that is
- 54:33ahead of you and it starts out that
- 54:34beautiful,
- 54:35and then you go hear these stories of
- 54:37how you've touched somebody's life or been
- 54:39able to share or help or direct or
- 54:40guide or even just cheer on,
- 54:45it's a beautiful element to have that just
- 54:47appreciation.
- 54:50It's incredible.
- 54:50I love it.
- 54:52We have another segment that I want to
- 54:54get to just because I'm interested in
- 54:55hearing the response.
- 54:57Table for two.
- 54:58Please say it's table for two.
- 55:00So we have a segment called Table for
- 55:02Two.
- 55:03Yes.
- 55:05And out of all of the things that
- 55:08we've talked about and the amazing things
- 55:09that you guys do every single day,
- 55:13this is a very selfish question.
- 55:18If you could have dinner with anyone,
- 55:22past, present, or future,
- 55:25who would it be and why?
- 55:30James, you got the floor.
- 55:32You know,
- 55:34and I think this is just because of
- 55:36a documentary I watched recently, but FDR,
- 55:41Franklin Roosevelt,
- 55:44was a very interesting person,
- 55:47and he lived through a very interesting
- 55:49time in our history,
- 55:50coming out of World War I,
- 55:52going into World War II,
- 55:54the Great Depression.
- 55:56He had some major,
- 55:58major things that he had to lead our
- 56:01nation through,
- 56:02and it was a very turbulent time in
- 56:04our nation where...
- 56:06a wrong decision could have led us to
- 56:10away from our democracy that we appreciate
- 56:12and take advantage of today.
- 56:14And so I may have answered this
- 56:16differently before, but I,
- 56:18I thought as a leader, you know,
- 56:21it would be great to just sit down
- 56:24and, and,
- 56:24and really get to know him as a
- 56:27man and just have that experience because
- 56:30it was very, very eyeopening to me.
- 56:35Darryl, you did it.
- 56:37My answer is all your fault.
- 56:41I have a table for two set this
- 56:43Saturday with the love of my life.
- 56:48We're going to dinner at a steakhouse in
- 56:50Nashville and I can't think of anybody
- 56:55from my past that I would want to
- 56:58go to dinner with today.
- 57:00I want to go to dinner with my
- 57:02future.
- 57:05And when you said that,
- 57:06Jennifer was the first thing that popped
- 57:08in my head in our reservation Saturday
- 57:11night.
- 57:12You're trying to get me in trouble with
- 57:13my wife.
- 57:18That's the first thing that popped to my
- 57:20mind.
- 57:21It's incredible.
- 57:23We've answered this before,
- 57:24but I need to readdress mine.
- 57:25And it's based on what James said.
- 57:28I think we came to a conclusion that...
- 57:29You're going to say your wife, aren't you?
- 57:31No, I'm not.
- 57:33Which will probably get me in trouble now,
- 57:34thanks.
- 57:35But I had said Jesus.
- 57:38And just with that element of just with
- 57:40everything that is encapsulated with that.
- 57:44But I want to tweak that answer.
- 57:46And it's funny that you said,
- 57:47because you watched the documentary.
- 57:48I watched Kevin Costner's thing the first
- 57:50Christmas last night.
- 57:52And the large majority of what we know
- 57:54about Jesus is his last like three years.
- 57:59I want to have dinner with twenty two
- 58:02year old Jesus.
- 58:04The one who hadn't quite got all the
- 58:07established worldly authority yet where
- 58:09people are really falling and listening.
- 58:10He's still kind of just bumming around and
- 58:12learning, but he knows.
- 58:16And like,
- 58:16I want to have that conversation and see
- 58:19through that lens.
- 58:20And the reason I say it like that,
- 58:21I saw a thing while we're watching that
- 58:24episode last night,
- 58:25which I thought Kevin Costner did a pretty
- 58:27good job with because it's literally just
- 58:29right up to birth.
- 58:29And that's all he covered.
- 58:30It was the first Christmas, right?
- 58:32Mm-hmm.
- 58:34The way he, um,
- 58:38portrayed baby Jesus and gave a lot of
- 58:42historical detail on the Magi and who they
- 58:45were and it comes to him.
- 58:48My view of Jesus is very much those
- 58:50last three years.
- 58:52And I like to think about,
- 58:54consider that as that entire life went on,
- 58:57the amount of things we don't know.
- 58:59There's a lot of conversation there I need
- 59:00to be able to be privy to.
- 59:04But it's a unique aspect.
- 59:07So in that show last night,
- 59:09there was a section.
- 59:10Did you watch it too?
- 59:11Yeah.
- 59:11Yeah.
- 59:12There was a section.
- 59:13I had to tell everybody to be quiet.
- 59:14Everybody kept trying to talk over it.
- 59:15It was really irritating.
- 59:16I was like, what are y'all doing?
- 59:17I'm trying to hear the facts.
- 59:20Me and my wife got really intrigued by
- 59:22it.
- 59:22But there was a moment that...
- 59:29mary's standing there and joseph comes up
- 59:31and says i'm all in like let i
- 59:36love you you're my wife i'm all in
- 59:38let's do this and we've thought about this
- 59:43we've talked about this answer for many
- 59:45many times and and and jesus would be
- 59:50there
- 59:53but to have dinner with the two of
- 59:54them right after that moment.
- 59:58Wow.
- 59:59Mary Joseph.
- 1:00:00Yeah.
- 1:00:02Yeah.
- 1:00:02Is a total different perspective of the
- 1:00:06entire world.
- 1:00:07I think Joseph doesn't get enough credit
- 1:00:09sometimes for the position he was in in
- 1:00:14there.
- 1:00:14Yeah.
- 1:00:15And I mean, and prior to that, when,
- 1:00:18when she looked at him and said,
- 1:00:20you know, I'm out,
- 1:00:22You know,
- 1:00:23I pray that the Lord enlightened you.
- 1:00:25Why?
- 1:00:26Yeah.
- 1:00:27Right?
- 1:00:28Like,
- 1:00:28to be a man and have the love
- 1:00:31of your life look at you and tell
- 1:00:33you,
- 1:00:34I'm out and I can't tell you why.
- 1:00:37Hope you find out.
- 1:00:38Good luck.
- 1:00:40Right?
- 1:00:41Yeah.
- 1:00:42And for him to have...
- 1:00:44the enlightenment to be able to come back
- 1:00:47and go i'm all in yeah is is
- 1:00:50just absolutely incredible and to be able
- 1:00:52to hear that face to face and and
- 1:00:56to and right after that moment to be
- 1:00:59able to say the things that i mean
- 1:01:03wow yeah like i mean it's just you
- 1:01:06know yes to sit down with jebus would
- 1:01:08be i mean that's my yeah but
- 1:01:14But if there's a one, a right.
- 1:01:15Yeah, that's it.
- 1:01:17There you go.
- 1:01:17Well, I mean, you gotta,
- 1:01:19you gotta believe that, you know,
- 1:01:20without the two of them,
- 1:01:22there is no him.
- 1:01:23Right.
- 1:01:24Right.
- 1:01:24So where do you go from there?
- 1:01:27Would it, would it have been someone else?
- 1:01:29Okay, fine.
- 1:01:30But would they have.
- 1:01:32I don't know.
- 1:01:34I still think to what James said, though,
- 1:01:36Joseph,
- 1:01:37the credit that he had not only to
- 1:01:38stay but to raise who he knew Jesus
- 1:01:41was because after he finds out and that
- 1:01:43kind of thing.
- 1:01:45When you have people traveling hundreds of
- 1:01:48miles come to your child who's like two
- 1:01:50years old.
- 1:01:52and they're bringing stuff that like only
- 1:01:54rich men get and you're like what are
- 1:01:56y'all doing and like and it almost became
- 1:01:58commonplace because that wasn't the first
- 1:02:00time it's like what like yeah so there's
- 1:02:02a perspective there of what he went
- 1:02:04through as the family leader you know
- 1:02:07Well, the stigma of, you know,
- 1:02:09people knew they weren't married.
- 1:02:11She's with child.
- 1:02:12You know, all the things.
- 1:02:13There had to be.
- 1:02:14It was a controversial thing, I'm sure.
- 1:02:16Well, that was, at least last night,
- 1:02:18that was the first time I really,
- 1:02:19they kind of delved into that's why going
- 1:02:21to Bethlehem helped.
- 1:02:22Because nobody knew there.
- 1:02:24To them,
- 1:02:24they just showed up as a husband and
- 1:02:25wife.
- 1:02:26And there was a unique twist there.
- 1:02:28Yeah.
- 1:02:28Hey, listen,
- 1:02:29we're going to get close to having to
- 1:02:30wrap up our show,
