Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The Patriots are back in pads and it was another scorcher.
- 0:02Speaker 1: We'll break it all down for you.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Let's go Welcome everybody to the Patriots Training Camp cast.
- 0:17Speaker 2: We just got off the field from the Patriots six
- 0:19Speaker 2: training camp practice and guys Harold Landry said afterwards he
- 0:22Speaker 2: felt like the defense had a good day, and I
- 0:24Speaker 2: think I would agree with him.
- 0:25Speaker 3: How about you, Paul, I would totally agree. Thought it
- 0:27Speaker 3: was a step forward. And I think when you take
- 0:30Speaker 3: into consideration that you're starting cornerbacks Christian Gonzalez and Carlton
- 0:33Speaker 3: Davis aren't a part of a day where it was
- 0:35Speaker 3: almost predominantly passing game in the red zone, and I
- 0:39Speaker 3: thought the defense got the better of things considering that
- 0:43Speaker 3: you're missing your best player on defense. I think it
- 0:45Speaker 3: was absolutely a step forward for the defense.
- 0:47Speaker 4: It's one of those practices where, again, if you bottle
- 0:50Speaker 4: up like three or four drakeros and put it on
- 0:53Speaker 4: a highlight reel, you're going to say, Wow, Drake Mayland
- 0:55Speaker 4: created practice.
- 0:56Speaker 5: But overall, I.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Agree with you that there wasn't a whole lot of
- 0:59Speaker 4: passes completed outside of those really nice throws coupled a
- 1:03Speaker 4: Stefawn Diggs one of Kyle Williams in the bucket. That
- 1:06Speaker 4: was a beauty, But overall a tight red zone, so
- 1:09Speaker 4: you're not gonna complete a ton of passes down there
- 1:11Speaker 4: most of the time. But I'd agree with you too
- 1:13Speaker 4: that the defense controlled today.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yeah, the difficulty ramped up.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Of course, yesterday we were first and second down in
- 1:18Speaker 2: the red zone. Today they added in third down. A
- 1:21Speaker 2: lot of work down there, I mean a lot of
- 1:22Speaker 2: reps for those guys. To me, though, Paul, it wasn't
- 1:24Speaker 2: necessarily the pass rush or the pressure. I mean, there's
- 1:26Speaker 2: certainly were moments where the pass rush got in on
- 1:29Speaker 2: Drake May.
- 1:30Speaker 1: But I think he was just a little off today.
- 1:31Speaker 2: One of those practices where it felt like, even in
- 1:33Speaker 2: seven on sevens early on, he was missing some guys and.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Just not a great day from Drake May.
- 1:37Speaker 2: He's been great, I would say, through the start of camp,
- 1:39Speaker 2: but was today was a day where it felt like
- 1:41Speaker 2: maybe it.
- 1:42Speaker 5: Wasn't his best.
- 1:42Speaker 3: I would totally agree with you, I thought, especially in
- 1:44Speaker 3: the seven on sevens, I thought he was erratic.
- 1:46Speaker 5: I thought he missed some guys.
- 1:47Speaker 3: I think he had Hunter Henry and team, you know,
- 1:50Speaker 3: heading toward the corner back line.
- 1:51Speaker 5: The end zone.
- 1:52Speaker 3: I think he just overthrew it, And like Kevin said,
- 1:55Speaker 3: there are also some plays where you know, I thought
- 1:57Speaker 3: he like layered a beautiful throw. The other side line
- 2:00Speaker 3: of booty couldn't have been any more perfect. So it
- 2:03Speaker 3: wasn't like it was all bad offensively. And because of
- 2:07Speaker 3: those personnel, you know, absences that we talked about, you
- 2:10Speaker 3: had a chance to see some different numbers and names today.
- 2:13Speaker 5: DJ James was one of them.
- 2:14Speaker 3: You know, I don't know exactly where he fits into
- 2:17Speaker 3: the equation, but we talked a lot about Alex Austen
- 2:19Speaker 3: and you know, Isaiah Bold and Marcellus Dial. I thought
- 2:22Speaker 3: took a step forward yesterday. DJ James was very competitive
- 2:26Speaker 3: in coverage todays and undrafted rookie I don't really know
- 2:28Speaker 3: a whole lot about I think he's an undrafted rookie.
- 2:31Speaker 5: Well, gonna keep my eye on him.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, not a lot of wide open passing windows.
- 2:36Speaker 2: I mean, everything was contested as you would expect it
- 2:38Speaker 2: to be in the red zone. But even still, again,
- 2:40Speaker 2: Harold Landry felt pretty good about how the defense played.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I would like to see more DJ James as
- 2:46Speaker 4: a name that has crept up in one on ones
- 2:48Speaker 4: and things like that with some pass breakups, but today
- 2:51Speaker 4: some couple more in team drills and eleven out eleven's
- 2:54Speaker 4: against the you know, frontline receivers for the Patriots. But
- 2:57Speaker 4: on the positive note for the offense, outside of some
- 2:59Speaker 4: of the highlight throws for Drake May, I just think
- 3:02Speaker 4: we have to mention the rookie offensive linemen are just
- 3:05Speaker 4: really starting to stack some terrific days together. I thought
- 3:08Speaker 4: Campbell again was solid today, but Jared Wilson really was tremendous,
- 3:12Speaker 4: especially in one on ones, shut down Milton Williams and
- 3:15Speaker 4: Christian Barmore to go three to zero and his three
- 3:18Speaker 4: reps and one on ones, and I just am coming
- 3:21Speaker 4: to the conclusion with Wilson he's one of your best
- 3:24Speaker 4: five in terms of blocking.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Now at center.
- 3:26Speaker 4: There's been some issues with the snaps with both Wilson
- 3:29Speaker 4: and Garrett Bradbury, and that battery of quarterback center is
- 3:32Speaker 4: a big mental load on a rookie. But in general,
- 3:37Speaker 4: I just can't come away from these practices with any
- 3:39Speaker 4: other conclusion of Jared Wilson's one of your best blockers
- 3:43Speaker 4: on the offensive line already, so finding a spot for him,
- 3:46Speaker 4: whether it's at left Carter center I think is a
- 3:48Speaker 4: must at this point.
- 3:49Speaker 3: So I would just I want to correct myself, DJ James,
- 3:52Speaker 3: first year player out of Auburn, not a rookie, not
- 3:55Speaker 3: an undrafted rookie. I would agree with the overall assessment
- 3:59Speaker 3: in some of these situation, you know, specifically at center
- 4:01Speaker 3: might be working themselves. Garrett Bradbury got nicked up a
- 4:04Speaker 3: little bit late in this practice.
- 4:05Speaker 5: He got stepped on, he came out, did not do
- 4:08Speaker 5: the conditioning run.
- 4:09Speaker 3: So we'll see if that costs him any practice time
- 4:10Speaker 3: moving forward.
- 4:12Speaker 5: But the exchange is something to watch. I thought it
- 4:14Speaker 5: was Bradbury today.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Yeah, but that has been an issue virtually every practice
- 4:18Speaker 3: has been at least one snap that ends up on
- 4:20Speaker 3: the ground.
- 4:21Speaker 5: You got to clean that up.
- 4:21Speaker 4: And it's from under center, too, which is obviously harder
- 4:25Speaker 4: for a lot of younger centers. I should mention, like
- 4:27Speaker 4: Jared Wilson, Georgia goes under center a little bit more
- 4:30Speaker 4: than your traditional college program these days. But still I
- 4:34Speaker 4: probably could count maybe twenty times that I saw Jared
- 4:37Speaker 4: Wilson snapped the ball from under center last year at Georgia.
- 4:40Speaker 4: So most college teams are gun teams predominantly so that's
- 4:44Speaker 4: a little bit of an adjustment to a pro style
- 4:46Speaker 4: offense to be as under center as the Patriots are
- 4:48Speaker 4: going to be.
- 4:48Speaker 5: So it's something to watch for.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Might be easier for him to play guard as a
- 4:52Speaker 4: rookie because center is a little bit more taxing. But again,
- 4:56Speaker 4: I just thought he looked terrific today.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Yeah, so a couple housekeeping things. Austin Hooper returned. He
- 5:01Speaker 2: had started the year on pup. Good to see him
- 5:03Speaker 2: out there.
- 5:04Speaker 5: Got tops so in full team.
- 5:07Speaker 2: But the headline of courses, Carlton Davis has been out.
- 5:09Speaker 2: We've only really seen him on a walk through this
- 5:12Speaker 2: first week now. Christian Gonzalez was out as well. I
- 5:15Speaker 2: think report Jordan Schultz reporting that hamstring issue a couple
- 5:18Speaker 2: of weeks. It's about what we thought. But still it
- 5:21Speaker 2: gives an opportunity. You guys talked about some of the
- 5:22Speaker 2: younger guys and we'll see tomorrow. I think we're gonna
- 5:25Speaker 2: stick around similar kind of practice plan. Is the offense
- 5:28Speaker 2: able to punch back a little bit, and I think
- 5:30Speaker 2: that's what we're setting up for this training camp. It's
- 5:33Speaker 2: been back and forth. I think a lot of these
- 5:34Speaker 2: last two practices, especially feels like the offense made some place,
- 5:37Speaker 2: feels like the defense made some plays today, felt like
- 5:40Speaker 2: the defense made the majority of the plays.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Now it sets up tomorrow, can the offense bounce back?
- 5:44Speaker 5: Absolutely?
- 5:45Speaker 3: I think that even some of the plays the offense
- 5:47Speaker 3: did make today were pretty well defended and they had
- 5:49Speaker 3: a high level of difficulty to them.
- 5:52Speaker 5: Time for the offense to respond.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Yeah, what else you're looking for, Evan as we get
- 5:55Speaker 1: ready here.
- 5:55Speaker 4: For Yeah, I would just mention, you know, Melton Williams
- 5:59Speaker 4: and Christian Barmore have been mainstays there in the middle,
- 6:03Speaker 4: but today I thought that sometimes they got handled a
- 6:06Speaker 4: little bit, And I just wonder, especially with Milton Williams
- 6:08Speaker 4: and Morgan Moses as well. I just flipping it over
- 6:11Speaker 4: to the offense and defense, the two free agent signings
- 6:13Speaker 4: that I'm interested to watch a little bit more and
- 6:16Speaker 4: see if maybe they just kind of get a rhythm
- 6:19Speaker 4: at some point going in training camp. Morgan Moses I
- 6:21Speaker 4: believe might have left practice.
- 6:23Speaker 5: Halfway through surely today.
- 6:25Speaker 4: So like, I'm feeling great about the rookie offensive lineman,
- 6:28Speaker 4: you know, Bradberry and Moses, the two veterans that they
- 6:30Speaker 4: brought in to upgrade this offensive line. Maybe moving a
- 6:33Speaker 4: little bit in the other direction. So I'd like to
- 6:35Speaker 4: see those two guys bounce.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Back, all right, well to beat Another practice tomorrow and pads.
- 6:39Speaker 2: We'll look forward to that, see if the offense is
- 6:41Speaker 2: able to bounce back as we get going here, wrapping
- 6:43Speaker 2: up the main part of the training camp. We'll get
- 6:45Speaker 2: into preseason and joint practices next week. Stick with us
- 6:48Speaker 2: throughout camp, though. We'll have these training camp casts after
- 6:50Speaker 2: every practice.
