Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / CARBON BLACK's Ten-Year Journey: A Groove Metal Revival With JON HURLEY
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: My name's John Hurley.
- 0:01Speaker 2: I'm the lead vocalist in Carbon Black, where a woongong
- 0:05Speaker 2: groove metal to put a basically yeah groove metal band.
- 0:10Speaker 2: We've been going for a little over ten years now,
- 0:13Speaker 2: which is just it's funny to look back at like
- 0:17Speaker 2: when we started and how we started and think of
- 0:19Speaker 2: all the things that we've done up until this point.
- 0:21Speaker 1: But we're recently releasing our brand new.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Brand new, our revisited and revitalized EP, Principium, with new
- 0:30Speaker 2: ideas and the stable band lineup that we've had for
- 0:34Speaker 2: a very long time now. Steve Giles came in on
- 0:36Speaker 2: drums I think about six years ago, you know, and
- 0:40Speaker 2: me and Rob Giles obviously on bass, and Damon Bishop
- 0:43Speaker 2: and guitar.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Like, we've been, yeah, a stable four piece.
- 0:46Speaker 2: For about six years now, and it was it was
- 0:48Speaker 2: a long time coming to find a stable drummer because
- 0:51Speaker 2: it's going off on one.
- 0:53Speaker 1: But yeah, it took it took us a while like that.
- 0:56Speaker 2: That's one of the reasons the reason why I bring
- 0:58Speaker 2: it up, it's one of the reasons why we've really
- 1:00Speaker 2: wanted to redo the Principium stuff is because you know,
- 1:04Speaker 2: Steve has added his personality to the songs that we
- 1:08Speaker 2: rush in the beginning, if you know what I mean, Like, yeah, anyway,
- 1:12Speaker 2: I won't go off on another one.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Yeah, that's fabulous. You've answered a lot of my questions already,
- 1:17Speaker 3: thank you.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Okay, well there was there was one more thing that
- 1:20Speaker 2: I'll just add to that real quickly. Yeah, we when
- 1:23Speaker 2: we started this project as Carbon Black, Rob who was
- 1:27Speaker 2: who was you know, our manager and he's the man
- 1:29Speaker 2: behind the plan so to speak. He already had gigs
- 1:33Speaker 2: books for us, Like we already had shows before we
- 1:36Speaker 2: had songs. So we needed songs, so we needed songs
- 1:39Speaker 2: that we needed songs yesterday.
- 1:41Speaker 1: So that's why I say rushed.
- 1:43Speaker 2: We literally went down to Damo's base basement with our
- 1:46Speaker 2: original drama yeah at the beginning, and we like knocked
- 1:51Speaker 2: out you know, forty forty minutes or something like that
- 1:53Speaker 2: of material in a matter of weeks, and that's what
- 1:57Speaker 2: became the PRINCIPI Original release, you know what I mean,
- 2:00Speaker 2: Like we can some of the tracks that just weren't
- 2:03Speaker 2: that great, you know, and but yeah, yeah, so that's
- 2:08Speaker 2: and we weren't really you know, we didn't really work
- 2:11Speaker 2: on the songs or anything like that, like you know,
- 2:13Speaker 2: it was much like a lot of those chorus, verst chorus,
- 2:16Speaker 2: bridge verse, chorus, pyper deal, you know, not not much
- 2:18Speaker 2: to them, simple simple stuff but catchy and they got
- 2:22Speaker 2: good choruses and all that stuff.
- 2:23Speaker 1: You know, we're still very proud of the songs.
- 2:25Speaker 2: But yeah, there's a few reasons to revisit these songs,
- 2:30Speaker 2: make them a little bit bigger, a little bit more
- 2:32Speaker 2: in depth, you know, a little bit better basically. So yeah,
- 2:35Speaker 2: that's that's really why we wanted to revisit them and
- 2:39Speaker 2: re release them as this new thing and to obviously
- 2:41Speaker 2: the celebrated ten years.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Jesus I believe it. How does it feel to know
- 2:48Speaker 3: that you've been doing this for ten years and you
- 2:51Speaker 3: guys have actually garnered quite huge success, like playing, like
- 2:55Speaker 3: managing to collaborate alongside is it tim Owens from Judas Priest.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, like it's it's actually
- 3:05Speaker 2: quite humbling is a good word for some of the time,
- 3:09Speaker 2: Like it's almost it's also sorry, it's also you know,
- 3:14Speaker 2: we do genuinely feel really lucky. You know, we've worked
- 3:16Speaker 2: really hard. You know, there's I mean, you can't go
- 3:18Speaker 2: two ways about it. We've worked really hard on our songs,
- 3:22Speaker 2: our stage presence, like our stage presentation as well, just
- 3:28Speaker 2: like try to because the landscape, especially in heavy music,
- 3:33Speaker 2: well in any music really it's it changes months to month,
- 3:37Speaker 2: week to week, day to day, almost out hours sometimes,
- 3:40Speaker 2: you know what i mean.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Once one second.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Year, you know, writing a way for popularity, in the
- 3:44Speaker 2: next second, no one even remembers your name, and that's
- 3:47Speaker 2: a bad thing. But yes, we've had a lot of
- 3:50Speaker 2: phenomenal experiences, phenomenal opportunities, you know.
- 3:53Speaker 1: The work.
- 3:54Speaker 2: I mean, that's doing the song with Ripper was was
- 3:58Speaker 2: an interesting during.
- 3:59Speaker 1: The pandemic or around that area.
- 4:02Speaker 2: We're organizing the the final touches to our second full length,
- 4:09Speaker 2: We've remain and we wanted to give a little bit
- 4:12Speaker 2: of spice basically like maybe grab a headline here or
- 4:15Speaker 2: something like that, and we're like, oh, how on earth
- 4:17Speaker 2: are we going to do that, you know, because it's
- 4:19Speaker 2: it's very difficult to make any type of you know,
- 4:22Speaker 2: swell if you will, especially from like we you know,
- 4:25Speaker 2: we're a local band from Albiam Parking all you know.
- 4:27Speaker 1: It's it's it's it's rough.
- 4:30Speaker 2: There's thousands of thousands and thousands of bands all out
- 4:33Speaker 2: there that that all have a passion for their music
- 4:35Speaker 2: and and you know all that stuff. So you know,
- 4:38Speaker 2: we wanted to try to make a little splash, a
- 4:40Speaker 2: little bit more than we usually do, and all of
- 4:43Speaker 2: a sudden, this this thing came up and Rob jumped
- 4:45Speaker 2: on it. It was Tim Owens was offering guest vocals
- 4:50Speaker 2: on on basically anything, you know, and it was difficult
- 4:54Speaker 2: for It was difficult for a lot of people, especially
- 4:57Speaker 2: musicians during the pandemic, because all of a sudden there
- 4:59Speaker 2: was nothing, you know, especially if you're on certain levels
- 5:02Speaker 2: where you know you're not making any money from streaming.
- 5:06Speaker 1: You know you're not.
- 5:06Speaker 2: You don't have any songs that are over a thousand
- 5:09Speaker 2: streams on Spotify or Apple Music or whatever on YouTube,
- 5:13Speaker 2: you know, and obviously no one's buying, well not no one,
- 5:16Speaker 2: but you know, we all know how the album market
- 5:19Speaker 2: is at at it sage for the past decade, so
- 5:23Speaker 2: you know, it's very difficult for musicians, especially life life
- 5:26Speaker 2: is like Tim Owens to make any type of revenue.
- 5:29Speaker 2: So obviously he was he was really open to any work, really,
- 5:33Speaker 2: I mean, to come his way.
- 5:35Speaker 1: That's that's how it seemed. Whether I'm right or wrong,
- 5:37Speaker 1: but that's how it seemed.
- 5:38Speaker 2: And maybe board sitting at home because we're locked inside
- 5:41Speaker 2: for two months, you know.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Anyway, so yeah, Rob was like, oh, what do you
- 5:44Speaker 1: guys think of this? And you know, I was like.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I mean, it's one hell of a one hell of
- 5:50Speaker 2: a headline and hopefully it grabs some attention. And you know,
- 5:54Speaker 2: obviously he's a phenomenal singer, and it's it's maybe I
- 5:57Speaker 2: shouldn't say, but it was funny because they as necrificed
- 6:02Speaker 2: way back before I mean obviously before Carbon Black was
- 6:05Speaker 2: even cut like a thing. They played with Tim Owens
- 6:11Speaker 2: at a show as his I think it was as
- 6:14Speaker 2: his backing band or as his support band at the
- 6:17Speaker 2: Cabbage Tree, which is a local venue in Wollongong. And
- 6:22Speaker 2: so yeah, it's like it was, it was I was,
- 6:25Speaker 2: and I just happened to be at that show as well,
- 6:28Speaker 2: like I was.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I was a punter at the time, hanging with my
- 6:30Speaker 1: other obviously, and.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Yeah, they were the backing band and they were hoping
- 6:36Speaker 2: to go that they didn't that he didn't remember them,
- 6:38Speaker 2: because apparently apparently that wasn't it wasn't the nicest scenario
- 6:43Speaker 2: to be in. I mean, to be honest that the
- 6:44Speaker 2: man used to headline whack and festivals with you this
- 6:47Speaker 2: priest and like have the tens of thousands of people
- 6:50Speaker 2: in front of him as a vocalist and this was
- 6:51Speaker 2: it not a dive bar, but it definitely didn't have
- 6:54Speaker 2: more than a hundred people in the room, you know,
- 6:57Speaker 2: and in Wullongong, you know.
- 6:58Speaker 1: So take that as you will.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Anyway, So yeah, we jumped on the opportunity and what
- 7:05Speaker 2: like you know, and he was he was phenomenal. It
- 7:08Speaker 2: really like obviously ultra professional send us sends us I
- 7:12Speaker 2: think three different full length takes that we could pick
- 7:16Speaker 2: and choose from and and yeah, what what we ended
- 7:20Speaker 2: up doing was what what we have in the final product,
- 7:22Speaker 2: you know, because the song was already written.
- 7:24Speaker 1: That was the things song was already written.
- 7:25Speaker 2: I had already done the main lead vocal line and
- 7:28Speaker 2: the harmonies and all the bits and pieces with Lachlin
- 7:30Speaker 2: in the studio. And that's like we were tossing attorney
- 7:34Speaker 2: on which song the sand and should we do this,
- 7:36Speaker 2: we do that, but under Order ended up being the
- 7:38Speaker 2: one we went with and the one we made the
- 7:40Speaker 2: video for, mainly because it was the more melodic, the
- 7:45Speaker 2: more power metal if you will, out of the songs.
- 7:48Speaker 2: In my opinion, I thought there was a lot of
- 7:51Speaker 2: different things there that he especially since he's got quite
- 7:53Speaker 2: an extensive range and knowledge of the harmonizations and all
- 7:57Speaker 2: the pieces, you know. Yeah, so he could really sink
- 8:01Speaker 2: his teeth into that track, and yeah, he really did.
- 8:03Speaker 2: He came back with some phenomenal stuff, especially like you
- 8:06Speaker 2: know that that ridiculous falsetto note that he holds over
- 8:09Speaker 2: the end like little stands a back there.
- 8:12Speaker 1: But yeah, that was great.
- 8:14Speaker 3: You know, he really fits the trait. It's like Taylor
- 8:17Speaker 3: made like you guys, tailor made it for him almost
- 8:19Speaker 3: and yourself as well obviously as a band, and it
- 8:22Speaker 3: just goes together so nicely.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, it worked out really really well. It
- 8:26Speaker 1: really really does.
- 8:27Speaker 2: And I kept on stuffing myself up by trying to
- 8:30Speaker 2: imitate the way he does the song so I could
- 8:32Speaker 2: swap between myself and here because obviously when we perform
- 8:34Speaker 2: at live, I'm like, you know, he's not going to
- 8:36Speaker 2: be a special guest appearance on a local allongong stage,
- 8:40Speaker 2: is he.
- 8:40Speaker 1: I mean, that'd be interesting, but I don't know whether
- 8:43Speaker 1: we're going to pull that one off. Every one day.
- 8:45Speaker 1: But if we ever get.
- 8:46Speaker 2: To tour the European scene and he's in the same
- 8:49Speaker 2: city and he actually remember.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Yeah, oh that's awesome. You guys will also be releasing
- 8:56Speaker 3: a limited amount of CDs for the princip him.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:00Speaker 3: I can't say that word very well.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Yeah, Rob loves his words.
- 9:04Speaker 3: Yeah, how can we get our hands on that?
- 9:10Speaker 2: Uh, probably through to be honest, I'm not one hundred
- 9:12Speaker 2: percent sure, but it's usually through band camp. We always
- 9:15Speaker 2: have hard copies that shows we perform at We have
- 9:18Speaker 2: hard copies of all the stuff, and yeah, so definitely
- 9:21Speaker 2: through band camp would be the best way. That's that's
- 9:23Speaker 2: how I mean. We've always got merch bundles. When it
- 9:25Speaker 2: comes to any release that we do, we do specialized
- 9:29Speaker 2: merch for each and every single, either single or or
- 9:33Speaker 2: you know, full length release or EP release or anything
- 9:35Speaker 2: like that. I mean, the the amazing thing about having
- 9:38Speaker 2: Demo is not only a great guitarist, but he's a
- 9:40Speaker 2: screen preer as well so and he's been doing it forever,
- 9:43Speaker 2: so he just comes up to these ideas for merch
- 9:45Speaker 2: and like you know, and he's got all the past
- 9:47Speaker 2: for like beanies and hats and coasters and what whatever
- 9:51Speaker 2: you want whatever. That's why when we brock up to
- 9:53Speaker 2: a venue, we have a suitcase full. It's like a
- 9:55Speaker 2: dozen different designs of T shirts and we yeah, we
- 10:01Speaker 2: even aties like for God's say, they went, they went
- 10:04Speaker 2: really quickly.
- 10:07Speaker 3: What can fans expect from your upcoming tour? Will we
- 10:09Speaker 3: hear a range of songs from your earlier stuff or
- 10:13Speaker 3: is it just going to be.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Definitely yeah, no, no, no, no.
- 10:17Speaker 2: So we're planning on performing the EP and full as
- 10:19Speaker 2: we used to back in the old days, as well
- 10:22Speaker 2: as a sprinkle of you know, the new stuff as well,
- 10:26Speaker 2: like we we want to do at least one like
- 10:28Speaker 2: if we have the time obviously, like you know, sometimes
- 10:30Speaker 2: we only do half an hour set, sometimes we do
- 10:32Speaker 2: forty five.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Sometimes we do it our whatever.
- 10:34Speaker 2: And we want to do the EP and full as
- 10:38Speaker 2: we used to do back in the old days, you know,
- 10:40Speaker 2: as the celebration thing, throwing at least one song from
- 10:44Speaker 2: each full length after it, whether it be you know, like.
- 10:47Speaker 1: We did it. We recently didn't show las in.
- 10:51Speaker 2: And you know that was we that was the first
- 10:53Speaker 2: time we performed the EP and full as the new stuff,
- 10:57Speaker 2: Like it's not the old versus of the songs, the
- 11:00Speaker 2: visited versions of those songs in full in a line.
- 11:03Speaker 2: I mean, it must be at least seven years, so,
- 11:08Speaker 2: you know, it's it's it's interesting. It was very interesting
- 11:10Speaker 2: to revisit those songs, and it's honestly very surprising and
- 11:13Speaker 2: how embedded in the memory because we did it over
- 11:16Speaker 2: and I mean over and over and over, because those
- 11:19Speaker 2: are the only songs that we knew. We played them
- 11:22Speaker 2: a lot, and it was just funny. It was like
- 11:25Speaker 2: you know, slipping back into a comfy pair of shoes again. Yeah,
- 11:28Speaker 2: you know what I mean. Oh man, Yeah, it was.
- 11:31Speaker 2: It was quite interesting, like and sometimes you flick back
- 11:33Speaker 2: because some of the lyrics are a little bit different,
- 11:36Speaker 2: some of the arrangements are a little bit different, you know,
- 11:38Speaker 2: some of the you know, for the new versions are
- 11:41Speaker 2: just the time a little bit different. And yeah, and
- 11:43Speaker 2: you keep on doing the old way because that's what
- 11:45Speaker 2: you used to Yeah.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Funny as Okay, just a few rough questions to wrap
- 11:50Speaker 3: it up. What does carbon life mean to you?
- 11:53Speaker 1: Oh?
- 11:54Speaker 3: Hell, that's a small question.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Nah right. I mean, to be honest, it's funny. I
- 12:01Speaker 2: keep on saying, to be honest that it's funny because
- 12:03Speaker 2: it really is. And because every now and again, especially
- 12:06Speaker 2: with the faces that we've come and gone that like
- 12:09Speaker 2: you know, because we've taught this. We haven't gone Western Australi,
- 12:11Speaker 2: which would be interesting in Northern terraor to it.
- 12:13Speaker 1: But like you know, we've been to Queensland, we've been
- 12:15Speaker 1: to Victoria.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Obviously, we've done the whole Sydney soon, we've done the
- 12:18Speaker 2: whole scene, you know, regional areas of New South Wales.
- 12:22Speaker 2: And the amount of bands that we're genuinely talented, you know,
- 12:28Speaker 2: had really great musicians, really great songs that just disappear
- 12:32Speaker 2: never like that maybe they play you know, I mean,
- 12:35Speaker 2: it's it's a big country and sometimes like I mean, hell,
- 12:38Speaker 2: we we played like for instance, there's that I mean,
- 12:41Speaker 2: I don't know whether you know, but you probably do.
- 12:42Speaker 1: There's a band called King Parrot that going that.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, obviously I was just making sure, yeah exactly,
- 12:49Speaker 2: but we and we played with them in horrible eight
- 12:52Speaker 2: years ago and they were already making yeah yeah, and
- 12:55Speaker 2: they were already making ways back then, like with their
- 12:58Speaker 2: videos and their stage performance and like you know, people
- 13:03Speaker 2: back then even like loved King Parrot and they obviously
- 13:09Speaker 2: bit you know, took the ball by the horn, so
- 13:11Speaker 2: to speak, and you know, went over to the States,
- 13:13Speaker 2: made some great networking, obviously, getting on the rope with
- 13:15Speaker 2: Philancelmo and you know, all these things, and now they're
- 13:18Speaker 2: playing not Fest this year, this next year, next year.
- 13:22Speaker 2: You know, so I think, yeah, and I think they
- 13:24Speaker 2: support a panther. I'm not one hundred percent sure, but
- 13:26Speaker 2: like so there's that, there's there's those bands, but that's
- 13:29Speaker 2: one in I don't know, like at thousands that we've
- 13:33Speaker 2: we've played with. So getting back to the question of
- 13:35Speaker 2: what Carbon Black means to me anyway, is the fact
- 13:39Speaker 2: that we've been able to make it through through the
- 13:42Speaker 2: hard times, the rough like some sometimes we're literally sitting
- 13:45Speaker 2: on our hands for I felt like two years through
- 13:49Speaker 2: drummer problems and you know, I mean not even lineup changes,
- 13:52Speaker 2: because it's been me Robin Daimo for the whole stick.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Even before then, I did a guess but you know,
- 13:59Speaker 1: I went.
- 13:59Speaker 2: In with Necrophics, Like I've performed a show at Canberra
- 14:04Speaker 2: in the basement with Necrifice because that something happened with
- 14:07Speaker 2: their vocalers and I just happen to be back in town.
- 14:10Speaker 2: And anyway, it's kind of worked out that all of
- 14:13Speaker 2: a sudden, I was the vocalist for Necrofice for for
- 14:16Speaker 2: a Cup of Tea, and that's kind of where all
- 14:18Speaker 2: this came from. So you know, it's I mean, it's been,
- 14:21Speaker 2: it's been. It is still I say it's been, like
- 14:24Speaker 2: it's finishing. It's not finishing. We're still we still have
- 14:26Speaker 2: a passion to write new songs. We still have a
- 14:28Speaker 2: passion to perform. You know, we always winge and moan
- 14:31Speaker 2: about rehearsal and wind you moan about having to drive
- 14:33Speaker 2: to Sydney and Windy. Ah, I just can't be blahah
- 14:35Speaker 2: blah blah blah blah, so tired from work.
- 14:37Speaker 1: And all this stuff.
- 14:38Speaker 2: And every time, every time we stand on stage, it's
- 14:41Speaker 2: it's a release. It's the best fun you can have.
- 14:45Speaker 2: In my opinion, it's the best fun you can have.
- 14:48Speaker 2: We've done some like we're like going back to the
- 14:50Speaker 2: tens of thousands of bands to disappear, Like we've supported the.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Cavaliera Conspiracy on there, No the Cavallera Brothers on.
- 14:56Speaker 2: There that arise beneath a right when they did arise
- 15:01Speaker 2: and beneath the remains in full, Like at the Metro.
- 15:03Speaker 1: We supported that there to unpacked Metro.
- 15:05Speaker 2: I've never seen that many people in front of our band,
- 15:08Speaker 2: and you know, it was it was absolutely incredible. The
- 15:10Speaker 2: very first time we supported the international band was at
- 15:13Speaker 2: the Metro. It was hell yeah, I got to meet
- 15:15Speaker 2: Viny Paul before he before he.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Passed like that. It was like I almost had a
- 15:20Speaker 1: heart attack. The man was literally walking down the hallway.
- 15:26Speaker 1: You know where the merch stands are at the Metro.
- 15:28Speaker 1: You've probably been to the Metro, but it's just there and.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Like, you know, it was like two ships of the
- 15:32Speaker 2: night and I was just like, that's.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Like, that's actually that guy.
- 15:37Speaker 2: And you know, obviously it wasn't just him that the
- 15:40Speaker 2: vocal because obviously the vocalist fro mud Vein was the
- 15:42Speaker 2: vocalist from Hell.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Yet so you know, we met.
- 15:44Speaker 2: You know, we're desperately trying to hold onto our professionalism
- 15:48Speaker 2: and not act like a fanboy. But anyway, so you
- 15:53Speaker 2: know that these these amazing experiences, like a lot of
- 15:56Speaker 2: drunken nights, that's for sure, a lot of long.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Row troops, a lot of music, a lot of head being,
- 16:03Speaker 1: a lot of.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Lessons in just how to take care of yourself, especially
- 16:10Speaker 2: as a vocalist because like you know, I do the
- 16:11Speaker 2: screaming and the singing, and I always want to give
- 16:13Speaker 2: it one hundred and ten percent.
- 16:14Speaker 1: To try to keep this intact is one of my
- 16:17Speaker 1: biggest challenges. I tell you, I was.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Going to do a lot of warm up before you
- 16:23Speaker 3: go on or does it come naturally to you? And
- 16:26Speaker 3: do you have a lot of rituals to keep your voice?
- 16:28Speaker 2: Oh, look, it has been I lost my voice for
- 16:33Speaker 2: a while, like I almost I wasn't sure whether because
- 16:38Speaker 2: I had always.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Been the warm up guy. Yeah, you know, I went.
- 16:41Speaker 2: To a vocal lessons before I even started singing singing.
- 16:44Speaker 2: I went to vocal lessons because I could. I wasn't bad,
- 16:48Speaker 2: you know what. You know, I wasn't I could sing,
- 16:50Speaker 2: I could sing better than most people, but like I
- 16:52Speaker 2: wasn't I never thought of myself as a singer. So
- 16:55Speaker 2: all of a sudden, my sister actually gifted me some
- 16:58Speaker 2: some vocal lessons and I was like, oh.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Okay, you know, never really never really thought of it.
- 17:03Speaker 2: I was always like too shy or you know, you
- 17:06Speaker 2: look up to these people like you know, you see
- 17:07Speaker 2: your head fields or you Bruce Dickinson's or your Corey
- 17:10Speaker 2: tailors and you're like, I could never do that.
- 17:11Speaker 1: You know, that's ridiculous.
- 17:12Speaker 2: But yet, long story short, honestly, but it all of
- 17:18Speaker 2: a sudden, I found a passion for it.
- 17:19Speaker 1: It was the best thing I started doing.
- 17:22Speaker 2: I loved it so much, and and obviously I had
- 17:25Speaker 2: positive feedback from people, which made me want to do
- 17:27Speaker 2: it even more. Yeah, and then and then I was
- 17:32Speaker 2: doing musical musical theater, and I had a whilst doing
- 17:37Speaker 2: the band as well, and I had a few bad
- 17:40Speaker 2: habits at the time that weren't helping. I wasn't taking
- 17:45Speaker 2: as good a care of myself or my voice as
- 17:47Speaker 2: I should have been. But plus I didn't have the
- 17:51Speaker 2: technique that I needed and that I have now to
- 17:57Speaker 2: really maintain the guttural growls and the cleans as well.
- 18:03Speaker 2: And but yeah, but I've always been the warm up guy.
- 18:06Speaker 2: I've always been like doing the exercises for hours at
- 18:08Speaker 2: a time on my vocals, practicing, practicing, practicing, practicing, practicing.
- 18:12Speaker 2: But I found when I when I had to, I
- 18:15Speaker 2: had to relearn and bless them make loud noise. Anita
- 18:21Speaker 2: hang On, I just want to give her a shout
- 18:23Speaker 2: out because she really really helped me and she's a
- 18:26Speaker 2: she's actually like a vocal specialist and a she specializes
- 18:31Speaker 2: in in you know, aggressive.
- 18:37Speaker 1: So her school is called Make Loud Noise.
- 18:39Speaker 3: No that'd be awesome to share because then it can
- 18:42Speaker 3: get other listeners, you know, thinking of going into what
- 18:45Speaker 3: you're doing.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Yeah, well that's that.
- 18:48Speaker 2: See, like some people, I can't find a last name
- 18:50Speaker 2: because I'm an asshole. But like it's Anita at Make
- 18:52Speaker 2: Loud Noise. It's on Facebook and check it out because
- 18:54Speaker 2: she's in Queensland and she does zoom lessons and without her,
- 18:59Speaker 2: I I don't know what I would have done. Like
- 19:02Speaker 2: it was a few people leading up to her, there
- 19:04Speaker 2: was a lovely lady and Barry that was helping me through.
- 19:07Speaker 3: We've just been cut off from John, but to wrap
- 19:10Speaker 3: it all up, it's been a pleasure speaking with John today.
- 19:13Speaker 3: From Carbon Black, Calvin Black will will be releasing Principam
- 19:16Speaker 3: two point zero December sixth and you can catch their
- 19:19Speaker 3: tour kicking off in Wagga Wagga December seventh, and we're
- 19:22Speaker 3: glad to see that the band's adding some rural towns
- 19:25Speaker 3: to their tours as well. Coming from a rural town myself,
- 19:28Speaker 3: it's awesome to see. We can't wait. Thank you guys
- 19:30Speaker 3: so much.
