- 5:13Speaker 13: Haven't had anything like that for a long time, real good,
- 5:17Speaker 13: haven't been cut, real fine. Maybe it's coming in from
- 5:21Speaker 13: the East coast. Can't get nothing like that from Mexico.
- 5:23Speaker 11: I look, money, we ran the stuff through the lab.
- 5:25Speaker 11: We know it's high grade heroin.
- 5:27Speaker 4: We know all about it.
- 5:28Speaker 11: Now, I want you to tell us where you've been
- 5:29Speaker 11: getting it.
- 5:30Speaker 13: Well, you know how it is. You want to ask
- 5:32Speaker 13: the impossible of me. My life wouldn't be worth a penny.
- 5:34Speaker 12: You know how it is.
- 5:35Speaker 9: Queen handles your year and a half ago, didn't you money?
- 5:38Speaker 14: Yeah?
- 5:39Speaker 9: Just telling around, aren't you.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 5:40Speaker 12: I did time though.
- 5:42Speaker 9: You knew that going in. You're gonna do time in
- 5:44Speaker 9: this trip.
- 5:45Speaker 11: Too, So don't shoot us that line.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Huh.
- 5:47Speaker 12: Well, you guys know how it is with us. Guys,
- 5:49Speaker 12: I I can't tell you anything.
- 5:50Speaker 11: No, it isn't that you can't. You just don't want to.
- 5:53Speaker 4: Oh.
- 5:53Speaker 5: Look, we didn't come up here to spend the time
- 5:55Speaker 5: of day with you, Wilkins. This is the only time around.
- 5:57Speaker 5: If you wanna help us, you can help yourself at
- 5:59Speaker 5: the same time.
- 6:00Speaker 13: To you, you mean you can clear me on this,
- 6:02Speaker 13: you can give me a break, And he didn't say that.
- 6:04Speaker 9: We can't make any promises to you or give you
- 6:06Speaker 9: any kind.
- 6:06Speaker 12: Of a break.
- 6:07Speaker 9: It's entirely up to you how you want us to
- 6:09Speaker 9: put it down my reports. Co operative or uncooperative.
- 6:12Speaker 12: Mm oh, okay, you square with me last time.
- 6:17Speaker 11: You helped us. Last time we made a case.
- 6:19Speaker 12: But I'm not gonna be able to help you very much.
- 6:21Speaker 11: Where you been getting it?
- 6:22Speaker 12: Well, I've only made a couple of buys on that
- 6:24Speaker 12: good stuff. I just got it from some old mule.
- 6:27Speaker 13: I just happened to meet down there, seen him be
- 6:29Speaker 13: pretty well loaded with the stuff.
- 6:30Speaker 9: Where'd you meet him?
- 6:31Speaker 13: Oh, down near fifth in the spring somewhere. What's his name?
- 6:35Speaker 13: I never did know his name. I just knew that
- 6:37Speaker 13: he was pushing the stuff, some old mule. That's a
- 6:40Speaker 13: who's he pushing it for?
- 6:41Speaker 4: Now?
- 6:41Speaker 13: You know they never tell us guys where they're getting it,
- 6:44Speaker 13: you know how they do. Yeah, I never did talk
- 6:46Speaker 13: to him very much. I did hear him say once
- 6:48Speaker 13: he was getting his stuff from a new bunch of
- 6:50Speaker 13: guys from the east, said they were really gonna open
- 6:52Speaker 13: up this town. Well, he talked, they're no small time operators.
- 6:57Speaker 13: I got enough out of it to know they're working
- 6:58Speaker 13: out of the Plaza Royal Hotel. Never figured that, would you?
- 7:02Speaker 13: Anything else? Any names mentioned? Yeah, I remember this old
- 7:06Speaker 13: mule mentioned a couple names. I think you talked about
- 7:09Speaker 13: somebody named Kirk and another guy called Smith. Now you understand,
- 7:13Speaker 13: this guy was just talking. I don't know how they
- 7:15Speaker 13: fit in or what the connections are.
- 7:16Speaker 4: You know, we understand.
- 7:17Speaker 11: Where can we get a hold of this ah?
- 7:19Speaker 12: Know, well I don't know where he's at.
- 7:20Speaker 11: How do you get a hold of 'em When you
- 7:21Speaker 11: wanna make a bye?
- 7:23Speaker 12: I just run into him.
- 7:24Speaker 13: That's all down around Spring Street, you know, just around last.
- 7:28Speaker 8: Time I was down.
- 7:29Speaker 12: I couldn't find it.
- 7:31Speaker 8: Is that all of it?
- 7:31Speaker 14: Money?
- 7:32Speaker 13: Know what you can tell us? Well, I don't know
- 7:34Speaker 13: too much anyway, you know how it is. I couldn't
- 7:37Speaker 13: tell you anymore. It's all I know.
- 7:38Speaker 11: All right, let's get out of this five ten.
- 7:40Speaker 12: If that's all you got, that's everything I got. Hope
- 7:45Speaker 12: you fellas will write me up.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Okay.
- 7:47Speaker 13: I think I helped you quite a bit, haven't I.
- 7:50Speaker 13: One of the best hotels in town, Plaza Royal. Never
- 7:53Speaker 13: would have figured that, would you? Maybe I've told you
- 7:56Speaker 13: quite a lot. The rest ought to be easy.
- 7:58Speaker 4: I know you're wrong. Their money.
- 8:00Speaker 11: Why you haven't told us the name of your mew.
- 8:02Speaker 11: You haven't told us where we could find him. You
- 8:03Speaker 11: haven't made it so easy.
- 8:05Speaker 12: That's all I have. I've told you a lot.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Yeah, there's a lot you didn't tell.
- 8:15Speaker 5: We continued our interrogation of Matty Wilkins. He refused to
- 8:17Speaker 5: divulge any further information. What he had told us, together
- 8:21Speaker 5: with information already compiled, seemed to check out. For the
- 8:24Speaker 5: past seven months, we'd been trying to localize the operations
- 8:27Speaker 5: of what had come to be regarded as a well
- 8:29Speaker 5: running distribution center for high grade heroin. We knew of
- 8:32Speaker 5: the existence of this distribution point through the various users
- 8:35Speaker 5: that had been picked up almost daily. These users would
- 8:38Speaker 5: have in their possession quantities of high grade and narcotics.
- 8:42Speaker 5: Unlike the cheaper, lower grade quality common in the southwest
- 8:44Speaker 5: part of the country, this type of heroin was more
- 8:47Speaker 5: common to the eastern section of the United States.
- 8:50Speaker 4: We had believed the local distribution.
- 8:51Speaker 5: Point to be somewhere in our metropolitan downtown area. The
- 8:55Speaker 5: information gained from Matty Wilkins had strengthened this theory. Ten
- 8:58Speaker 5: twenty five AM met with Francis Kerney, captain of the
- 9:01Speaker 5: Narcotics Division.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Apply as a royal hotel.
- 9:04Speaker 7: What do you think, Well, we've figured what we were
- 9:06Speaker 7: looking for could be in that area, but we've never
- 9:08Speaker 7: put a finger on that hotel.
- 9:10Speaker 14: How do you figure on working.
- 9:12Speaker 5: Well, Driving back from the jail, Ben and I were
- 9:14Speaker 5: just kicking it around, skipper, what do you think about
- 9:16Speaker 5: putting a man in that hotel?
- 9:17Speaker 1: Anything's a great deal better than we're doing now, But
- 9:19Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Oh, I'd like to give it a try, sure, like
- 9:22Speaker 4: a crack at his giver.
- 9:24Speaker 1: You know how I feel about these kind of assignments.
- 9:26Speaker 1: One man working inside one outside brings the element of
- 9:29Speaker 1: danger up kind of high.
- 9:30Speaker 4: Well, we know it's not going to be easy, but
- 9:31Speaker 4: it looks like a good bet.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Sometimes these things are. Sometimes they're not. You know what
- 9:35Speaker 1: kind of a bunch they got to be, and running
- 9:37Speaker 1: their racket just about as smooth as it can be run.
- 9:40Speaker 1: You know the kind of a risk of man it'd
- 9:42Speaker 1: have to take if you try to make contact with
- 9:43Speaker 1: any of.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Them, or we think it's about the quickest way to
- 9:45Speaker 4: get to them.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Well, maybe it might be worth it. You got any
- 9:49Speaker 1: ideas how you'd like to work it.
- 9:50Speaker 7: There's just one thing. We haven't come to any decision.
- 9:53Speaker 7: Who's going in who is?
- 9:54Speaker 4: Well?
- 9:54Speaker 5: I think I ought to be the one to work
- 9:56Speaker 5: it from the inside of the hotel, with Ben working
- 9:58Speaker 5: outside as a contact.
- 9:59Speaker 7: I don't know why we can't you just turn that
- 10:00Speaker 7: around last time you had the rough.
- 10:02Speaker 14: End, Joe.
- 10:03Speaker 1: You just got back from your vacation about three weeks ago,
- 10:05Speaker 1: didn't you.
- 10:06Speaker 4: Yeah, that's right.
- 10:06Speaker 1: Did you stayed down in Arizona Phoenix wasn't.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 10:10Speaker 8: You know the town very well.
- 10:11Speaker 4: I've got some relatives down there.
- 10:13Speaker 1: You they started asking you any questions about Phoenix, you
- 10:15Speaker 1: could fill them in then, I think, so that's probably
- 10:18Speaker 1: the best way to settle it. Roma Friday here'll be
- 10:21Speaker 1: in a better position knowing a little about Phoenix.
- 10:23Speaker 7: I don't see how you figured that way. I went
- 10:25Speaker 7: on my vacation too. Columbus, Ohio.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Well, because of the type of stuff that's been coming in,
- 10:30Speaker 1: don't you think it'd be a little safer bet to
- 10:32Speaker 1: have our men come from somewhere out this way rather
- 10:34Speaker 1: than from the east.
- 10:35Speaker 7: Oh yeah, it makes sense. Well you did it again, Joe,
- 10:40Speaker 7: you beat me out.
- 10:41Speaker 1: All right, Let's figure it this way. You're a local
- 10:44Speaker 1: Phoenix hoodlum. Things got too hot for you down there,
- 10:46Speaker 1: and you came up to La to cool. Oh yeah,
- 10:49Speaker 1: how about Joe Edwards.
- 10:51Speaker 8: How does that sound?
- 10:52Speaker 4: That sounds right to me.
- 10:53Speaker 8: We'll get all the.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Necessary cards, identification papers, and a few letters to carry
- 10:57Speaker 1: around with.
- 10:57Speaker 14: You, all under the name Joe Edwards.
- 10:58Speaker 4: All right.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I think the best way to work it is for
- 11:01Speaker 1: you to hop right down to Phoenix. When you get
- 11:03Speaker 1: in town, check with Roberts. He's in narcotics down Yeah,
- 11:06Speaker 1: I know him. Have Roberts filled in on what's been
- 11:08Speaker 1: going on down there, any of their current characters they've
- 11:11Speaker 1: handled recently, any that have been known to pass through
- 11:14Speaker 1: you know, so you can talk about it freely.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Yeah, I understand, Joe.
- 11:17Speaker 7: Well, when you check into the hotel down there, why
- 11:19Speaker 7: don't you wire a head up here to the Plaza
- 11:21Speaker 7: Royal for reservation.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Might be a good cover.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Yeah, good thought. It's the way to handle it. You
- 11:25Speaker 1: two have worked these things before. You know what to do,
- 11:27Speaker 1: all the necessary precautions.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Well, how long do you figure out all lay over
- 11:30Speaker 4: in Phoenix?
- 11:31Speaker 1: A couple days maybe I think that's long enough for
- 11:34Speaker 1: you to get filled in what you need.
- 11:35Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, that's fine. Well I'll go home and get packed.
- 11:38Speaker 4: I'll start on it first thing in the morning.
- 11:39Speaker 1: All right, Ramero'll stand by it all times, day and night.
- 11:42Speaker 1: While you're on this thing. You know enough to call
- 11:44Speaker 1: if things get tight. Sure, soon as you get in
- 11:47Speaker 1: from Phoenix and get located at the Plaza Royal, get
- 11:49Speaker 1: in touch so we'll know which way.
- 11:50Speaker 4: To move right. Anything else.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Oh, we want to break this thing, but we don't
- 11:54Speaker 1: want to do it at the risk of a life.
- 11:55Speaker 1: So if it starts getting warm, check out.
- 11:58Speaker 4: Okay.
- 11:59Speaker 1: I still don't like anybody on something like this, but
- 12:01Speaker 1: it's got to be done.
- 12:03Speaker 14: We don't know enough about it.
- 12:04Speaker 8: We don't know how many are in the gang. We
- 12:06Speaker 8: don't know what kind of.
- 12:07Speaker 14: A bunch they are, so be careful.
- 12:08Speaker 4: I will.
- 12:09Speaker 1: If you're not and I hear about it, this will
- 12:11Speaker 1: be your last assignment like this.
- 12:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:13Speaker 1: If I don't hear about it, well you figure it.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Yeah, either way, I lose.
- 12:23Speaker 5: I went over to the photo room at the crime
- 12:24Speaker 5: Lab and picked up the identification papers that had been
- 12:26Speaker 5: made out in the name of Joe Edwards. I went
- 12:29Speaker 5: home and removed all Los Angeles labels from the clothing
- 12:31Speaker 5: that I was to take with me to Phoenix, Arizona.
- 12:34Speaker 5: I removed all my personal identification in Los Angeles Police
- 12:37Speaker 5: Department credentials. I left my service revolver home and borrowed
- 12:40Speaker 5: a thirty eight automatic from Ben.
- 12:42Speaker 4: I packed it in my suitcase.
- 12:44Speaker 5: The crime lab also furnished me with a package or
- 12:46Speaker 5: a bundle, made to resemble the usual form in which
- 12:49Speaker 5: a person would carry Heroin.
- 12:51Speaker 4: I packed this in my suitcase.
- 12:53Speaker 5: Before my departure, Ben and I went over the proposed
- 12:55Speaker 5: plan as best we could. I was to arrive from
- 12:58Speaker 5: Phoenix under the assumed name of Joe. I would register
- 13:01Speaker 5: at the Plaza Royal Hotel in downtown Los Angeles and
- 13:04Speaker 5: attempt to make arrangements to participate in a narcotics buy
- 13:07Speaker 5: for the purpose of gaining sufficient evidence to apprehend the
- 13:09Speaker 5: narcotics ring. I was to keep being informed as best
- 13:13Speaker 5: I could of my progress as outlined by Captain Kearney.
- 13:16Speaker 5: I arrived in Phoenix and contacted Sergeant Roberts at the
- 13:19Speaker 5: Detective Bureau down there. He furnished me with all unnecessary
- 13:22Speaker 5: information and assisted me in acquiring local Phoenix clothing store
- 13:26Speaker 5: labels to have sown in my clothing. I obtained everything
- 13:29Speaker 5: possible to make it appear that I was a longtime
- 13:31Speaker 5: resident of Phoenix, Arizona. Several dummy hotel bills were made
- 13:35Speaker 5: up for me to make it look as if I
- 13:36Speaker 5: had lived there for a period of time. I was
- 13:39Speaker 5: furnished with an Arizona driver's license, a membership in the
- 13:41Speaker 5: local social club, and a voters registration stub. These were
- 13:45Speaker 5: all packed in my suitcase. October ninth, ten am, I
- 13:48Speaker 5: arrived at the Plaza Royal Hotel the front desk, Yes, sir,
- 13:53Speaker 5: my name's Edwards. I'm in from Phoenix. Did you get
- 13:55Speaker 5: my wire.
- 13:55Speaker 14: One moment, sir, Yes, sir, Joe Edwards.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Yeah, that's right.
- 14:00Speaker 14: Would you sign the register please?
- 14:02Speaker 15: Yeah, alright, thank you, but yes, sir. Would you show
- 14:13Speaker 15: this gentleman in room two eleven please, yes, sir, this
- 14:15Speaker 15: way please?
- 14:16Speaker 4: Alright? Thank you, go ahead, sir, Thank you too. Please.
- 14:32Speaker 8: Not very nice weather to arrive in Los Angeles?
- 14:34Speaker 4: Is it's a level not too good?
- 14:36Speaker 16: I see by the stickers on your bags you've been
- 14:38Speaker 16: through Arizona. Yeah, that's right, must be nice weather down there, huh.
- 14:43Speaker 4: Yeah, that's alright, this.
- 14:46Speaker 8: Way, sir.
- 14:47Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 15:00Speaker 8: I mean you open the window for you, sir, a
- 15:01Speaker 8: little fresh air in here.
- 15:02Speaker 4: Uh and.
- 15:07Speaker 8: Okay, thanks, here you go, thank you very much, sir.
- 15:11Speaker 8: Help you with your bags? Yeah alright, Oh I'm sorry, sir.
- 15:18Speaker 8: Something dropped out on the floor here.
- 15:19Speaker 4: You better let me have that.
- 15:20Speaker 16: Sorry, very sorry that happened. That's alright, mister Edwards. Uh,
- 15:31Speaker 16: while you're in town here, there's anything I can do
- 15:33Speaker 16: for you. Don't hesitate to let me know. Yeah, okay,
- 15:36Speaker 16: I couldn't help. But notice that little package there that
- 15:38Speaker 16: I dropped. Yeah, well, like I say, I know my
- 15:42Speaker 16: way around here in this town.
- 15:43Speaker 8: I need anything, you know, anything at all, sir.
- 15:45Speaker 5: I'll tell you what. Now, here's five bucks. You never
- 15:49Speaker 5: saw anything fall out of my bag there.
- 15:50Speaker 8: Right, anything you say, sir?
- 15:52Speaker 4: Okay, thanks a lot, see you later.
- 15:54Speaker 8: Huh yes, sir, anything else, sir.
- 15:58Speaker 4: No, No, that'll be all good.
- 16:03Speaker 8: You'll remember what I told you, sir.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I was just gonna say the same thing to you.
- 16:11Speaker 5: I couldn't be sure, but it looked like i'd been
- 16:13Speaker 5: lucky right from the start. The bell boy at the
- 16:15Speaker 5: Plaza Royal Hotel. I didn't know if I could consider
- 16:19Speaker 5: this an opening contact or not, but he seemed to
- 16:21Speaker 5: show more than a passing interest in the brindle of
- 16:23Speaker 5: narcotics that he had seen fall from my suitcase. I
- 16:25Speaker 5: didn't feel it was the right time to press the
- 16:27Speaker 5: issue any further with a bell hop, but I figured
- 16:29Speaker 5: I'd wait and leave the next move up to whoever
- 16:31Speaker 5: he might have been working for. During the next three days,
- 16:34Speaker 5: nothing happened. I tried, without appearing to be too bold,
- 16:37Speaker 5: to arouse some interest, but without success. October thirteenth, my
- 16:41Speaker 5: fifth day at the Plaza Royal Hotel, six pm, I
- 16:44Speaker 5: went in the bar off the main lobby.
- 16:47Speaker 7: I beg your pardon, Yeah, Kirk Carting's my name. I
- 16:50Speaker 7: noticed you hear in the bar the last couple of nights.
- 16:52Speaker 7: You appear to buy a little Are you selling?

- 17:03Speaker 5: I don't know what kind of business you think I
- 17:04Speaker 5: am in, but you got it figured wrong, mister.
- 17:06Speaker 7: You know this entire matter to work out much better
- 17:08Speaker 7: for you in the long run. If you'd level with me,
- 17:10Speaker 7: you're just gonna make it tough on yourself.
- 17:11Speaker 14: This way a bit ill.
- 17:12Speaker 4: I'm sorry you lost me way back somewhere.
- 17:14Speaker 7: Alright, let's do it the hard way. You're up here
- 17:17Speaker 7: from Phoenix. We know you've got some stuff with you.
- 17:20Speaker 7: We know you're not a user. You're a member of
- 17:21Speaker 7: the social club down there. They're a registered voter.
- 17:24Speaker 4: I mean, you've been working real hard, haven't.
- 17:26Speaker 7: So there's more. You got two pieces of luggage. You're
- 17:28Speaker 7: carrying a thirty eight automatic anymore. Yeah, there's telegram from
- 17:32Speaker 7: a friend of mine down in Phoenix.
- 17:33Speaker 14: Yeah, we know all about.
- 17:35Speaker 4: You, mister.
- 17:46Speaker 2: You are listening to dragnet authentic cases from official police files. Now,
- 17:52Speaker 2: let's look at our fatima files.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Listed under l love It Vice Admiral Leland P. Love It,

- 18:11Speaker 1: Fatima is easily the best of all long cigarettes.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Friends, More smokers now insist on king size fatimas than

- 19:22Speaker 3: cigarettes a A.
- 19:31Speaker 5: It was a tight moment as Kirk Harding fingered the
- 19:33Speaker 5: telegram in the bar the Plaza Royal Hotel. I had
- 19:36Speaker 5: spent many hours in consultation with Sergeant Roberts in Phoenix,
- 19:39Speaker 5: Arizona before undertaking this assignment. I felt sure that we
- 19:42Speaker 5: hadn't overlooked anything that might lead to my true identity.
- 19:45Speaker 4: Kirk Harding read the wire to me.
- 19:47Speaker 5: It was from a man with the name of George Ferguson.
- 19:49Speaker 5: He'd done some legwork for Harding and had not been
- 19:51Speaker 5: able to furnish him with anything other than what had
- 19:53Speaker 5: been found out, and going over my room, I knew I'd.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Found the contact that I was looking for.
- 19:59Speaker 5: I told him that I was in the business of
- 20:00Speaker 5: buying narcotics, that I was in Los Angeles for the
- 20:02Speaker 5: purpose of making a pre arranged narcotics buy with agents
- 20:05Speaker 5: dealing in Mexican stuff. Harding immediately gave me a strong
- 20:09Speaker 5: sales pitch, saying that he could furnish me with high
- 20:11Speaker 5: grade heroin fresh from the European market in quantity. At
- 20:16Speaker 5: the end of the first week, I was introduced to
- 20:17Speaker 5: Kirk Harding's two associates, another man called Smith full name
- 20:21Speaker 5: Horace L. Smith and a woman by the name of
- 20:23Speaker 5: Lucille Cosgrove. Ben had been unable to find records on
- 20:27Speaker 5: any of the three. For the next three weeks, we
- 20:30Speaker 5: became more friendly. We went places together, spent a great
- 20:32Speaker 5: deal of time together. Monday, November fifteenth, Well.

- 24:06Speaker 5: in front of the hotel. I looked around. I didn't
- 24:09Speaker 5: see Ben or any of our cars in sight. Smith
- 24:12Speaker 5: drove and Kirk and I got in the back seat.

- 24:18Speaker 5: know which of the two men was planning to kill me,
- 24:20Speaker 5: but I felt sure Lucille Cosgrove told me the truth.
- 24:23Speaker 5: Her information on the buy was right, and maybe this
- 24:25Speaker 5: other was correct as well. We drove out Figueroa Street

- 26:30Speaker 7: let's see the money.
- 26:32Speaker 4: Oh wait till I see the stuff. Huh.
- 26:33Speaker 20: You don't trust anybody, do you?
- 26:38Speaker 14: What are you trying to prove?
- 26:39Speaker 4: Well, I didn't like what he said.
