- 0:00Speaker 1: Every Monday, we talked to Jeff Legwald. He is brought
- 0:02Speaker 1: to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBEW
- 0:05Speaker 1: Local sixty eight. Start with the job, end with a career, Jeff.
- 0:09Speaker 1: We begin with the concerning and scary news, although hopefully
- 0:16Speaker 1: we believe it's going to have a happy ending. Tell
- 0:19Speaker 1: us about Alex Singleton, his diagnosis, his surgery, and his
- 0:25Speaker 1: bout with testicular cancer that he's dealing with.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Well, you know, he told the team this morning so
- 0:34Speaker 2: that he had been had surgery Friday to remove a tumor.
- 0:38Speaker 2: And you know, as we've all sort of tried to
- 0:44Speaker 2: put in a story and all that, I mean, just
- 0:46Speaker 2: the timeline of it is is pretty amazing. You know,
- 0:49Speaker 2: he takes a random drug test leading up to the
- 0:52Speaker 2: Houston game, you know, the usual league mandated, Hey, your
- 0:56Speaker 2: name popped up, you gotta go see the you gotta
- 0:59Speaker 2: go see the test guy this morning, and he was
- 1:04Speaker 2: found to have a level of a hormone that can
- 1:07Speaker 2: sometimes be a marker for testicular and ovarian cancer. So
- 1:12Speaker 2: when you when you get an elevated reading of that
- 1:16Speaker 2: and you haven't been taking that hormone, they will immediately
- 1:20Speaker 2: send you to get checked out. He did that, and
- 1:24Speaker 2: then it finds out a week ago Monday, last Monday,
- 1:28Speaker 2: that the tumor is indeed cancerous. They believe, so surgery Friday.
- 1:33Speaker 2: He plays in the game. Thursday. I spoke to him
- 1:36Speaker 2: in the locker room, you know, he did a little
- 1:37Speaker 2: group thing with a few of us, and then I
- 1:40Speaker 2: spoke to him after that just about some things, and
- 1:43Speaker 2: he gave sort of no indication, Hey, tomorrow I'm having
- 1:45Speaker 2: cancer surgery. But you know, that's that's what happened. He
- 1:51Speaker 2: spent the weekend at home and then, like I say,
- 1:54Speaker 2: he informed most of his teammates who didn't know. A
- 1:59Speaker 2: select few and a select few of the Broncos hierarchy
- 2:04Speaker 2: knew what was happening, but most people did not. And
- 2:08Speaker 2: you know, so today was a pretty emotional team meeting
- 2:11Speaker 2: for everybody. And I asked him today what his post
- 2:17Speaker 2: operative you know, recovery looks like, and you know, will
- 2:20Speaker 2: he be tested? He said, he will be tested specifically
- 2:24Speaker 2: for the to make sure that you know, the hormone's gone,
- 2:27Speaker 2: so that that marker is not reading off of anything
- 2:31Speaker 2: else in his body. And he said he did have
- 2:33Speaker 2: a cat scan that indicated he did not have other
- 2:37Speaker 2: cancer at this point, so but he didn't even know yet,
- 2:41Speaker 2: you know, how often he'll be screened for, you know,
- 2:44Speaker 2: additional cancers in the future or any of that.
- 2:49Speaker 3: Okay, So it's led to a couple of questions from
- 2:51Speaker 3: people that were football related. A I know, he said,
- 2:53Speaker 3: I just keep seeing timelines. I'm assuming you don't have
- 2:56Speaker 3: a direct timeline, lady, because again we're watching ESPN and
- 2:58Speaker 3: that's your place. And if they had the timeline, they'd
- 3:00Speaker 3: have the timeline. Any idea what the rough timeline for
- 3:03Speaker 3: return to play for him might be? In a couple
- 3:05Speaker 3: people have asked in relation to this, do we know
- 3:08Speaker 3: anything about Drew Sanders and would he be close to
- 3:10Speaker 3: coming back?
- 3:12Speaker 2: Well as far as Singleton's timeline, even he didn't know.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Today he's still waiting. They haven't even given him the
- 3:21Speaker 2: total pathology report from the tumor that they removed, so
- 3:26Speaker 2: he's waiting on that. The doctors are waiting on that
- 3:29Speaker 2: to plot what his treatment, if any, moving forward, would
- 3:34Speaker 2: be and kind of where his checkups will be and
- 3:36Speaker 2: all those things. He said, At one point, you know,
- 3:41Speaker 2: he'll miss the Chiefs game for sure. They have a
- 3:44Speaker 2: bye week and then again, even he didn't have his
- 3:49Speaker 2: specific timeline. So I think if people are putting specific
- 3:52Speaker 2: timelines out there, I don't think they know before Alex
- 3:55Speaker 2: does what those are. But he did offer up at
- 3:59Speaker 2: the end of a little conference call with a few
- 4:03Speaker 2: of us that, uh, you know, he didn't think it
- 4:07Speaker 2: would be four or five or six weeks. So that
- 4:10Speaker 2: to me, that tells me in his mind, you know,
- 4:12Speaker 2: he's working off of a two three you know, two
- 4:16Speaker 2: or three week window there. And Sanders is you know,
- 4:21Speaker 2: I've seen him around the facility every day, but you know,
- 4:26Speaker 2: until he is formally returned to practice, you know that
- 4:29Speaker 2: that twenty one day window isn't isn't open, you know,
- 4:33Speaker 2: And that's that's kind of where that's at. Would I
- 4:35Speaker 2: would expect they do whatever they want, you know, whatever
- 4:39Speaker 2: they need to have a fill in it linebacker justin
- 4:42Speaker 2: Sternod you know, goes in no matter what it is.
- 4:45Speaker 2: So I would think he's he will play against the
- 4:48Speaker 2: Chiefs there.
- 4:49Speaker 1: And stern has again mostly had a pretty good year.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Jeff Legweld everybody ESPN dot com. So Jeff, uh, let's
- 4:56Speaker 1: let's shift over then to the football side of things.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Sean Payton had a Zoom press conference earlier today, he
- 5:03Speaker 1: was asked extensively about bo Nix's recent struggles right now,
- 5:09Speaker 1: What is the Broncos plan, if there is any that's
- 5:13Speaker 1: been indicated to you to get things settled down and
- 5:17Speaker 1: find some consistency out of this offense.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Well, I think all involved, you know, believe there is
- 5:24Speaker 2: an issue with the clock in bo Nix's head as
- 5:28Speaker 2: far as what's a clean pocket, what isn't a clean pocket?
- 5:32Speaker 2: When should you move? When should you not move? And
- 5:34Speaker 2: I think that's what they're sort of focusing on, you know,
- 5:37Speaker 2: the footwork and making sure he isn't using his movement
- 5:42Speaker 2: skills until he has to, because he is, he is
- 5:47Speaker 2: moving and adjusting in clean pockets and that's affecting his
- 5:50Speaker 2: accuracy right now. And you know, again I don't I
- 5:54Speaker 2: don't put it totally on him, but you know that
- 5:57Speaker 2: is part of it. He's gonna have to address and
- 6:00Speaker 2: work on, and that is something the Broncos are looking at.
- 6:04Speaker 2: And that's you know, the issue, guys, is always the
- 6:09Speaker 2: same is during the season, day to day is so
- 6:12Speaker 2: game plan heavy. They have such limited time to run
- 6:17Speaker 2: the reps of the plays they're actually going to run.
- 6:19Speaker 2: In the game. It's really hard to do a lot
- 6:22Speaker 2: of drill work, you know, in the practice time outside
- 6:25Speaker 2: of the meetings and all the rest of it, especially
- 6:29Speaker 2: for a quarterback. There's no player on the team who
- 6:32Speaker 2: is in meetings with coaches more than the quarterback, So
- 6:37Speaker 2: it's really hard to get those guys into sort of
- 6:40Speaker 2: drills you would do in May and June and July
- 6:43Speaker 2: and even in camp. But you know, I think they
- 6:50Speaker 2: Davis Webb does do drills with guys on a daily basis,
- 6:53Speaker 2: limited work, and we see a lot of those, and
- 6:57Speaker 2: I think they'll step up some of them that are
- 6:59Speaker 2: very three step specific, five step, seven step specific drills,
- 7:05Speaker 2: just to get the timing and to make sure he's
- 7:09Speaker 2: getting that back foot settled and rotating and getting all
- 7:13Speaker 2: the you know, hips and shoulders through the ball the
- 7:15Speaker 2: way he should.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Jeff, I'm gonna ask you this question, and it's based
- 7:19Speaker 3: off others reporting, and I'm not trying to have you,
- 7:22Speaker 3: you know, talk about another person's reporting, but let's be honest.
- 7:26Speaker 3: For me, I feel like I know when Colin Cowherd speaks,
- 7:29Speaker 3: he's probably talked to Sean Payton in some shape or form,
- 7:32Speaker 3: and Cowherd and Chase Daniel, two guys who seem to
- 7:35Speaker 3: have known some things about what Peyton was going to
- 7:37Speaker 3: do before he's done them, have suggested that maybe there's
- 7:39Speaker 3: some tension between Bo and Sean. You're around these guys
- 7:43Speaker 3: both every day. I know you talked to both of
- 7:44Speaker 3: them extensively. As a guy that's in the building, how
- 7:47Speaker 3: would you say your impression of the relationship is right now?
- 7:52Speaker 2: I would say it's not going well. So both guys
- 7:55Speaker 2: are peeved, you know, And I think you know, if
- 7:58Speaker 2: you want to classify that that is specifically his tension
- 8:02Speaker 2: between them, you know, it could be. I mean, nobody
- 8:06Speaker 2: spends more time with Sean Payton than the starting quarterback,
- 8:10Speaker 2: and no one's gonna take more heat from Sean Payton.
- 8:15Speaker 2: No player on the roster on the Broncos roster will
- 8:18Speaker 2: now or ever take more heat than the starting quarterback
- 8:22Speaker 2: from the head coach. And I think we all have
- 8:25Speaker 2: to remember Sean Payton is a disciple of Bill Parcells.
- 8:30Speaker 2: He honestly believes because he was taught this way. Discomfort
- 8:36Speaker 2: is a coaching tactic, and making people uncomfortable is a
- 8:42Speaker 2: coaching tactic. I mean, Will Lutz has talked about all
- 8:46Speaker 2: the stuff Sean Payton says to him before he kicks
- 8:50Speaker 2: in a practice to make him uncomfortable. So nobody's gonna
- 8:55Speaker 2: get more of that than bo Nicks. And if it's
- 8:57Speaker 2: not going well, you know, I don't think any of
- 9:00Speaker 2: us like to get hammered at work over and over again.
- 9:05Speaker 2: So yeah, I think there's probably the vocational tension of
- 9:10Speaker 2: football it ain't going well. And knowing bow Nicks, I
- 9:16Speaker 2: haven't been in all the meetings, and I preface all
- 9:19Speaker 2: of this by saying I ain't in the quarterback meetings,
- 9:22Speaker 2: but having spoken to bow Nicks plenty, I don't think
- 9:27Speaker 2: there's any way he has taken all of the criticism
- 9:30Speaker 2: and just simply walked out of the room. I would
- 9:33Speaker 2: guess he's got enough moxie and backbone to answer back
- 9:37Speaker 2: from time to time. And you know, perhaps that's what
- 9:41Speaker 2: people are reporting. I bet they've had some exchanges, but
- 9:45Speaker 2: none of that's out of the ordinary either. I mean
- 9:47Speaker 2: John Elway argued with every coach he had. Peyton Manning
- 9:51Speaker 2: argued with every coach he had. I mean I've heard
- 9:54Speaker 2: of discussions between Peyton Manning and Adam Gase. You know,
- 9:58Speaker 2: you couldn't put on cable TV. So, uh, it's a
- 10:02Speaker 2: natural thing. But yeah, I would guess it exists right
- 10:06Speaker 2: now just because they're not either one of them getting
- 10:10Speaker 2: the results they want.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Yeah, when the offense isn't doing well, nobody's going to
- 10:14Speaker 1: be in a good mood. By the way, Mark Moser
- 10:17Speaker 1: does regularly get hammered at work, But that's an entirely
- 10:19Speaker 1: different it's a.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Different kind of thing. It's a different hammer, if you will.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's it's a different kind of thing, right there,
- 10:25Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald. Everybody. ESPN dot com is where you read
- 10:28Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald's Broncos coverage. His latest on Alex Singleton is
