- 0:19Voila, the genie in your phone or your computer who pops out?
- 0:23Or maybe your iPad, your watch, your earbuds, your I don't know
- 0:27how many different devices you can listen to podcasts on these
- 0:30days, wherever you're listening. Hello.
- 0:32So good. So good that you have invited me
- 0:35in and that you are taking a moment in your busy day to hear
- 0:39what God has to teach you today through His Word.
- 0:43And I've had lots to say in the preambles through the first half
- 0:46of this week. So let's keep it short today and
- 0:49dive straight into our reading as we hear about the rest of
- 0:52Hezekiah's life and the terrible trap of flattery.
- 0:57Oh dear. As we read together Second Kings
- 1:00chapter 20, about that time Hezekiah became
- 1:14deathly ill and the prophet Isaiah, son of Amos went to
- 1:17visit him. He gave the king this message.
- 1:21This is what the Lord says. Set your affairs in order, for
- 1:25you are going to die. You will not recover from this
- 1:29illness. When Hezekiah heard this, he
- 1:32turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord.
- 1:35Remember Me, O Lord, how I have always been faithful to you and
- 1:40have served you single mindedly, always doing what pleases you.
- 1:45And he broke down and wept bitterly.
- 1:49But before Isaiah had left the middle courtyard, this message
- 1:53came to him from the Lord. Go back to Hezekiah, the leader
- 1:57of my people. Tell him this is what the Lord,
- 2:01the God of your ancestor David, says.
- 2:04I've heard your prayer and seen your tears.
- 2:08I will heal you. And three days from now you will
- 2:12get out of bed and go to the temple of the Lord.
- 2:16I will add 15 years to your life, and I will rescue you and
- 2:20this city from the king of Assyria.
- 2:23I will defend the city for my own honour and for the sake of
- 2:27my servant David. Then Isaiah said, Make an
- 2:32ointment from figs. Sir Hezekiah's servant spread
- 2:35the ointment over the boil and Hezekiah recovered.
- 2:40Meanwhile Hezekiah had said to Isaiah, What sign will the Lord
- 2:44give to prove that he will heal me and that I will go to the
- 2:48temple of the Lord 3 days from now?
- 2:50Isaiah replied, This is the sign from the Lord to prove that He
- 2:55will do as he promised. Would you like the shadow on the
- 2:59sundial to go forward 10 steps or backward 10 steps?
- 3:04The shadow always moves forward, Hezekiah replied, So that would
- 3:09be easy. Make it go 10 steps backward
- 3:12instead. So as I the prophet, asked the
- 3:15Lord to do this, and he caused the shadow to move 10 steps
- 3:20backward on the sundial of Ahaz. Soon after this, marodic
- 3:26Baladan, son of Baladan king of Babylon, sent Hezekiah his best
- 3:32wishes and a gift, for he had heard that Hezekiah had been
- 3:35very sick. Hezekiah received the Babylonian
- 3:38envoys and showed them everything in his treasure
- 3:42houses, the silver, the gold, the spices and the aromatic
- 3:45oils. He also took them to see his
- 3:48armoury and showed them everything in his royal
- 3:50treasuries. There was nothing in his palace
- 3:53or Kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them.
- 3:57Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked him what
- 4:01did those men want? Where are they from?
- 4:05Hezekiah replied. They came from the distant land
- 4:08of Babylon. What did they see in your
- 4:11palace? Isaiah asked.
- 4:14They saw everything, Hezekiah replied.
- 4:17I showed them everything. I own all my royal treasuries.
- 4:21Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, Listen to this message from the
- 4:25Lord. The time is coming when
- 4:28everything in your palace, all the treasures stored up by your
- 4:31ancestors until now, will be carried off to Babylon.
- 4:36Nothing will be left, says the Lord.
- 4:39Some of your very own sons will be taken away into exile.
- 4:43They will become eunuchs who will serve in the palace of
- 4:46Babylon's king. Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah,
- 4:51This message you have given me from the Lord is good for the
- 4:56king was thinking, at least there will be peace and security
- 5:00during my lifetime. The rest of the events of
- 5:04Hezekiah's reign, including the extent of his power and how he
- 5:08built a pool and dug a tunnel to bring water into the city, are
- 5:11recorded in the book of the History of the Kings of Judah.
- 5:16Hezekiah died and his son Manasseh became the next king.
- 5:32Our Lord, let it never be said that you do not hear our prayers
- 5:36and respond. Lord, thank you for this story
- 5:40that shows us this moment in time where you have declared the
- 5:44King's impending doom, and through bitter tears and
- 5:49anguished prayer to you, you change your mind and you extend
- 5:54his life another 14 years. Lord, that is not always going
- 5:58to be the way it works. And you will have plans that far
- 6:02outstrip our ability to see to the end of them.
- 6:05And sometimes when we ask you for things, they won't be the
- 6:09way we want them to be. But Lord, give us confidence
- 6:13that you do indeed hear our prayers and that you do indeed
- 6:18respond to them and answer them, even if it's not in the way that
- 6:22we were asking for. Lord, thank you that you hear
- 6:27us. Thank you that in your
- 6:29generosity and your love, you reach out.
- 6:33You come to us, and you respond to our prayers.
- 6:37You are a good and loving God. Oh, and we thank you so much for
- 6:43that as well as the mighty God of the universe who reigns with
- 6:48your strong arm, that you are also the tender, loving and
- 6:53present God who through your spirit lives in each of us.
- 7:00Yes, you are mind blowing and we don't get it, but we love you
- 7:04nonetheless and we pray all of these things in that loving and
- 7:09saving name of Jesus, Amen.
