- 0:25Welcome back, listeners to Sam Mann Stories Presents, a
- 0:27folklore podcast where I read you to sleep or until the next
- 0:30story. I'm your host Dustin, and if you
- 0:33want more Sandman, you can hear all the tales that are too spicy
- 0:36for the main feed for as little as no money per month.
- 0:40It's all on the Patreon. And today we are continuing the
- 0:44story from Lalbahari Day about the two thieves.
- 0:48If you remember in Part 1, they go to great lengths to avoid
- 0:51spending any money. Now we're going to see what the
- 0:53next generation does. And trigger warning, the thief
- 0:58does a bit of killing, so it caught me by surprise as well.
- 1:02OK, let's continue the adventures of the two thieves
- 1:07and of their sons. Part 2.
- 1:11The older thief and the younger thief had one son each.
- 1:15As they have been successful in life by practicing the art of
- 1:17thieving, they resolved to train their sons in the same
- 1:20profession. In the village there was a
- 1:23professor of the science of roguery, who took on pupils and
- 1:27gave them lessons in that difficult science.
- 1:31The two thieves enrolled their sons under this renowned
- 1:33professor. The son of the older thief
- 1:36distinguished himself very much, and surpassed his father in the
- 1:39art of stealing. The lad's cleverness was tested
- 1:43in the following manner. Not far from the professor's
- 1:46house there lived a poor man in a Hut, upon the thatch of which
- 1:49climbed a creeper of the gourd kind.
- 1:52In the middle of the thatch, which was also the topmost part,
- 1:56there was a splendid gourd, which the man and his wife
- 1:58watched all day and night. They certainly slept at night,
- 2:03but then the thatch was so old and rickety that even if a mouse
- 2:07went up into it, bits of straw and dirt used to fall inside the
- 2:10Hut. The man and his wife slept right
- 2:14below the spot where the gourd was, so that it was next to
- 2:16impossible to steal the gourd without their knowing.
- 2:20The professor said to his pupils, for which he had many,
- 2:23that anyone who stole the gourd without being caught would be
- 2:26pronounced the ducks of the school.
- 2:31The older thief's son immediately accepted the offer.
- 2:34He said that he would steal the gourd if you were allowed to use
- 2:36three things, namely a string, a cat and a knife.
- 2:41The professor allowed him to use these three things.
- 2:44Two or three hours after nightfall, the lad sat behind
- 2:47the thatch under the eaves, listening the conversation of
- 2:50the man and his wife lying in bed inside the Hut.
- 2:54In a short time the conversation ceased.
- 2:57The lad concluded that they both must have fallen asleep.
- 3:02He waited 1/2 an hour longer and hearing no sounds inside, gently
- 3:06climbed up into the thatch. Chips of straw and particles of
- 3:10earth fell upon the couple sleeping inside.
- 3:13The woman woke up and waking her husband said, look, someone is
- 3:17stealing our gourd. That moment the lad squeezed the
- 3:21tail of the cat, and the puss immediately gave out her usual
- 3:24mew, mew, mew, the husband said. Don't you hear the cat mewing?
- 3:29There is no thief, it is only a cat.
- 3:33The lad in the meantime, cut the gourd from the plant with his
- 3:36knife, and tied the string which he had with him to its stalk.
- 3:40But how was he to get down without being caught, especially
- 3:43now that the man and the woman were now awake?
- 3:48The woman was not convinced that it was only a cat.
- 3:51The shaking of the thatch, and the constant falling of the bits
- 3:54and straw of particles of dust, made her think that it was a
- 3:56human being that was upon the thatch.
- 3:59She was telling her husband to go out and see whether or not a
- 4:02man was there, but he maintained that it was only a cat.
- 4:07While the man and woman were thus disputing with each other,
- 4:10the lad, with great force threw down the cat upon the ground, on
- 4:13which the poor animal purred most vociferously, and the man
- 4:17said aloud to his wife. There it is, you are now
- 4:21convinced that it was only a cat.
- 4:24In the meantime, during the confusion created by the clamour
- 4:27of the cat and the loud talk of the man, the lad quietly came
- 4:30down from the thatch with the gourd tied to a string.
- 4:35The next morning the lad showed the gourd to his teacher, and
- 4:37described the manner in which he had committed the theft.
- 4:42The professor was in ecstasy and remarked the worthy son of a
- 4:46worthy father. But the older thief, the father
- 4:50of our hopeful genius, was by no means satisfied that his son was
- 4:54yet fit to enter the world. He wanted to prove him still
- 4:59further. Addressing his son, he said, My
- 5:03son, if you can do what I tell you, I'll think you fit to enter
- 5:06the world. If you can steal the gold chain
- 5:09of the queen of this country from her neck and bring it to
- 5:12me, I'll think you are fit to enter the world.
- 5:16The gifted son readily agreed to do the daring deed.
- 5:21The young thief, for that's what we will call the son of the
- 5:23older thief, now, made a reconnaissance of the palace
- 5:26where the king and queen lived. He observed all four gates and
- 5:31all the outer and inner walls as far as he could.
- 5:34He gathered a good deal of information from the
- 5:36neighborhood regarding the habits of the king and queen,
- 5:39where they slept, what guards there were, and who, if anyone,
- 5:43slept in the antechamber. Armed with all this knowledge,
- 5:46the young thief picked a Dark Knight for doing the daring
- 5:49deed. He took a sword, a hammer and
- 5:52some large nails and put on very dark clothes.
- 5:57With tools in hand, he went prowling about the lion gate of
- 6:00the palace. Before the Zanana could be
- 6:03reached, 4 doors, including the lion gate, had to be passed, and
- 6:08each of these doors had a guard of 16 stalwart men.
- 6:12The same men, however, did not remain at their post all night,
- 6:16as the king had an infinite number of soldiers at his
- 6:19command. Guards at the doors were
- 6:20relieved every hour, once every hour.
- 6:25At each door there were 32 men present, consisting of the
- 6:28relieving party and of the relieved.
- 6:31The young thief chose that particular time to enter each of
- 6:35the four doors. At 8:00, when he saw the lion
- 6:40gate crowded with 32 men, he joined the crowd without being
- 6:43noticed. He spent the next hour in the
- 6:46large open space between the two doors.
- 6:49He wasn't noticed because the night and his clothes were pitch
- 6:51dark. He passed the second door in the
- 6:55same way, and then the third door, and then the fourth door.
- 6:59Now the Queen's bed chambers stared him in the face.
- 7:02It was in the third loft, and there was a bright light in it,
- 7:05and a low voice talking. The young thief thought that the
- 7:09voice must be that of a maid servant reciting a story, as was
- 7:13custom in the palace for getting the Royals to sleep.
- 7:17But how to get up into the third loft?
- 7:20The inner doors were all closed, and there were guards
- 7:22everywhere, but the young thief had with him nails in a hammer.
- 7:27Why not drive the nails into the wall and climb up by them?
- 7:31True, but the driving of the nails into the wall would make a
- 7:34great noise, which would rouse the guards and possibly the king
- 7:38and queen. At any rate, the maid reciting
- 7:41the stories would give alarm. Our erratic genius had
- 7:45considered that matter well before starting the work.
- 7:49There is a water clock in the palace which tells the time, and
- 7:52at the end of each hour a very large gong is struck.
- 7:56The sound of it is so loud that is heard all over the palace and
- 8:00over most parts of the city. This clock had a feature which
- 8:04was that one minute after the first stroke was made, the
- 8:07second stroke could be made allowing the gong to finish its
- 8:10sound. The thief chose the minutes when
- 8:14the gong was struck for driving nails into the wall.
- 8:18At 10:00, when the gong was struck 10 times, the thief found
- 8:22it easy to drive 10 nails into the wall.
- 8:25When the gong stopped, the thief also stopped and stood quietly
- 8:29on the 9th nail, catching hold of the 10th.
- 8:33At 11:00 he drove into the wall 11 nails and got a little higher
- 8:38than the second story, and by 12:00 he was in the loft where
- 8:42the royal bedchamber was peeping in.
- 8:46He saw a maid drowsily reciting a story and the king and queen
- 8:50fast asleep. He snuck up behind the maid and
- 8:53took a seat. The queen was laying down on a
- 8:57richly furnished bed of gold beside the king.
- 8:59The massive gold chain around the Queen's neck was shining in
- 9:02the candlelight. The thief quietly listened to
- 9:07the story of the drowsy maid. She was becoming more and more
- 9:10sleepy. She stopped for a second, nodded
- 9:14her head, and again resumed the story.
- 9:18It was plain to see that she was tired.
- 9:21In a moment the thief cut off the head of the maid and went on
- 9:24reciting the story which the woman was telling.
- 9:29The king and queen were unconscious of any change in the
- 9:31storyteller, for they were in a deep sleep.
- 9:34He stripped the murdered woman of her clothes, put them on
- 9:37himself, tied his own clothes up in a bundle, and, walking
- 9:40softly, gently took off the chain from the neck of the
- 9:43queen. Then he went downstairs and
- 9:46ordered the guard to open the door.
- 9:48The guards, seeing that it was the Queen's maid, readily
- 9:51allowed her out in the same manner and with the same
- 9:55pretext. He got through the other doors
- 9:57and at last was out onto the street.
- 10:00That very night, or rather morning, the young thief put on
- 10:04to his father's hand the gold chain of the Queen.
- 10:08The older thief could scarcely believe his own eyes.
- 10:10It was like a dream. His joy knew no bounds.
- 10:14Addressing his son, he said. Well done, my son.
- 10:17You are not only as clever as your father, but you have beaten
- 10:20me hollow. May the gods give you a long
- 10:23life, my son. The next morning, when the king
- 10:29and Queen got up from bed, they were shocked to see the maid
- 10:31servant lying in a pool of blood.
- 10:34The Queen also found that a gold chain was not around her neck.
- 10:37They couldn't make out how this could have all taken place.
- 10:40How could any thief manage to elude the vigilance of so many
- 10:43guards? How could he get into the
- 10:44Queen's bed chamber? How could he get out again?
- 10:50The king heard reports from the guards that a person calling
- 10:52herself the Royal Maid had gone out of the palace some hours
- 10:55before dawn. All sorts of inquiries were
- 10:58made, but in vain. Proclamation was made in the
- 11:02city. A large reward was offered to
- 11:04anyone who could give information for the apprehension
- 11:07of the thief and murderer, but no one responded to the call.
- 11:12At last the king ordered a camel to be brought to him.
- 11:16On the back of that animal was placed two large bags filled
- 11:18with gold coins. The man taking charge of the
- 11:22bags upon the camel was ordered to go through every part of the
- 11:24city, making the following challenge.
- 11:28As the thief was daring enough to steal a gold chain from the
- 11:31neck of the queen, let him further show his daring by
- 11:34stealing the gold coins from the back of this camel.
- 11:39For two days and nights the camel paraded through the city,
- 11:42but nothing happened. On the third night, as the camel
- 11:46driver was going on his rounds, he was accosted by a sannyasi
- 11:49who sat on a Tiger's skin before a fire, and near whom was a
- 11:53monstrous pair of tongs. This sannyasi was no other than
- 11:58the young thief in disguise. The sannyasi said to the camel
- 12:02driver, Brother, why are you going through the city in this
- 12:05manner? Who is there so daring as to
- 12:07seal from the back of the King's camel?
- 12:10Come down, friend, and smoke with me.
- 12:14The camel driver got down, tied the camel to a tree and began
- 12:17smoking. The medicants supplied him not
- 12:21only with tobacco, but with ganja and other intoxicating
- 12:24drugs, so that in a short time the camel driver became quite
- 12:27intoxicated and fell asleep. The young thief LED away the
- 12:32camel with the treasures on his back, in the dead of the night,
- 12:35through narrow lanes and alleys to his own house.
- 12:38That very night the camel was killed and it's carcass was
- 12:41buried deep in the pits of the earth, and the thing was done so
- 12:45that no one could discover any trace of it.
- 12:49The next morning, when the king heard that the camel driver was
- 12:52lying drunk in the street and that the camel had been taken
- 12:54away along with the treasure, he was almost beside himself with
- 12:57anger. A proclamation was made in the
- 13:02city to the effect that whoever caught the thief would get a
- 13:04reward of a lock of rupees. The son of the younger thief,
- 13:10who by the way, was in the same school of roguery as the son of
- 13:13the older thief, though he did not distinguish himself so much,
- 13:17now, came to the front and said that he would apprehend the
- 13:19thief. He suspected that the son of the
- 13:22older thief must have done it, for who was as daring and clever
- 13:24as he. In the evening of the following
- 13:29day the younger thief disguised himself as a woman, and coming
- 13:32to that part of the town where the young thief lived, began to
- 13:35weep very much, and went from door to door saying, Oh, sirs,
- 13:40can any of you give me a bit of camel's flesh?
- 13:44For my son is dying, and the doctors say nothing but eating
- 13:48camel's meat can save his life. Oh, for pity's sake, do give me
- 13:53a bit of camel meat. At last he went to the House of
- 13:57the young thief and begged the wife, for the young thief
- 14:00himself was out to tell him where he could get hold of camel
- 14:03meat, as his son would surely perish if it could not be had.
- 14:08Saying this, he pierced the air with his cries, and fell down at
- 14:11the feet of the young thief's wife.
- 14:15Woman as she was, though the wife of a thief, she felt pity
- 14:19for the supposed woman, and said, Wait, and I will try and
- 14:22get some camel's flesh for your son.
- 14:25So saying, she secretly went to the spot where the dead camel
- 14:28had been buried, cut off a small bit of flesh, and gave it to the
- 14:31party. The son of the younger thief was
- 14:34now entranced with joy. He went and told the king that
- 14:37he had succeeded in tracing the thief, and he would be ready to
- 14:40deliver him up that night, if the king would set some
- 14:43constables with him. At night the older thief and his
- 14:47son were captured, and the body of the camel dugout and all the
- 14:50treasures of the house seized. The following morning the king
- 14:55sat in judgement. The son of the older thief
- 14:57confessed that he had stolen the Queen's gold chain, killed the
- 15:00maidservant, and had taken away the camel.
- 15:04But he added that the person who had found him and his father,
- 15:07the younger thief, were also thieves and murderers, of which
- 15:11he gave undoubted proofs. As the king had promised to give
- 15:15a lock of rupees to the detective, that sum was placed
- 15:18before the son of the younger thief.
- 15:22But soon after he ordered 4 pits to be dug in the earth, in which
- 15:25were buried alive with all sorts of thorns and thistles.
- 15:28The older thief and the younger thief and their two sons.
- 15:33Here my story endeth, the Nadia, thorn, withereth, etcetera.
- 15:37The end. Wow, I was not expecting for the
- 16:06maid to be OFT. That kind of shocked me and I
- 16:10did like how crafty the older thief was but also that poor
- 16:13maid. I also like how the king did
- 16:15reward the younger son's thief but then at the same time
- 16:18punished him for being a thief as well.
- 16:20And I'm glad to see the story told out.
- 16:23There are about 9 stories left in this book, after which I will
- 16:25look for another, but that won't be until 2027 or so.
- 16:30And the podcast shout out is to Reddit on Wiki.
- 16:33John, Josh and Sean are good guys, making them a rare
- 16:37commodity in podcasting. They host agony Ant stories,
- 16:41play games, and they even have a lovely live show in Toronto that
- 16:44I treated myself to. You should really go listen to
- 16:47the fellows. They're well worth it.
- 16:49And the listener shout out is to Kamasi, Ghana, located in what
- 16:54was once the Asante Empire. Kumasi is the second largest
