Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Kay Oliver: UK Correspondent on the conflict between the Tories and Labour over unemployment plans
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Kay Oliver our UK Europe correspondent. The Tories are accusing
- 0:03Speaker 1: labor there of pinching, stealing their ideas k.
- 0:07Speaker 2: A new move to get Britain working. The Work and
- 0:10Speaker 2: Pension Secretary in Liz Kendall has told MPs and the
- 0:13Speaker 2: Commons today that they intend to create a new jobs
- 0:16Speaker 2: and career service connecting to work scheme. But her counterpart,
- 0:22Speaker 2: Helen Weightley for the Tories said that basically they've just
- 0:26Speaker 2: turned what was their work well program into their own branding.
- 0:30Speaker 2: So she's saying she is very pleased that they are
- 0:33Speaker 2: making these moves forward, but they've had fourteen years to
- 0:37Speaker 2: come up with their own plans and she think it's
- 0:39Speaker 2: quite rich of them obviously to steal what they see
- 0:42Speaker 2: as their own unique ideas. Now this all comes ryan
- 0:45Speaker 2: as we were saying that a big focus here on
- 0:49Speaker 2: youth unemployment and eighteen to twenty five year olds have
- 0:52Speaker 2: been told they have to earn or learn or lose
- 0:57Speaker 2: their benefits. Now figures show the unemployment at the moment
- 1:00Speaker 2: for young people here stand at fourteen point eight percent,
- 1:04Speaker 2: which is up from twelve percent just last year. That
- 1:08Speaker 2: Liz Kendall obviously highlighting the changes that they're going to
- 1:12Speaker 2: make said that she will be piling more money into
- 1:15Speaker 2: what she sees as a scheme that will basically encourage
- 1:20Speaker 2: and help people to find jobs. She feels that what's
- 1:24Speaker 2: currently around dates back to the nineteen eighties or nineties,
- 1:29Speaker 2: and this is going to get people basically back into
- 1:33Speaker 2: where they should be. And there's also going to be
- 1:35Speaker 2: more money for youth mental health schemes. So it's a
- 1:39Speaker 2: big package that basically they're designing to try to get
- 1:42Speaker 2: people off benefits, get them back to work, and make
- 1:46Speaker 2: it easy to find jobs.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Well, I suppose at least they have the decency to
- 1:50Speaker 1: change the name of the program before they stole it.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Well, absolutely, very.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Quickly, Russia has expelled a British diplomat, accusing him of espionage.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Do we know exactly what he's done?
- 2:01Speaker 2: Well, no, this is the State news agency has reported.
- 2:06Speaker 2: This is the country's FSB security service. They are saying
- 2:10Speaker 2: that the diplomat, whose photo has actually been shown on
- 2:13Speaker 2: TV bulletins, that he's provided false information on his documents
- 2:19Speaker 2: and carrying out espionage. Now, of course, the Foreign Office
- 2:23Speaker 2: here are saying this is not the first time that
- 2:26Speaker 2: Russia has made malicious and baseless accusations against our staff.
- 2:32Speaker 2: They intend to respond in due case in due course.
- 2:35Speaker 2: But interestingly, last week it emerged that the UK obviously
- 2:40Speaker 2: lifted those restrictions on Ukraine, using the British supplied storm
- 2:45Speaker 2: Shadow missiles on targets inside Russia for the first time.
- 2:50Speaker 2: So it's quite interesting that this has happened at this
- 2:52Speaker 2: particular time.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Certainly, thank you very much for that update. That's Kay Oliver.
