- 0:11Hello friends, it is Sean here and it is a Tuesday, but more
- 0:17importantly it is the 1st of August.
- 0:20Welcome to a new month. We are into the last month of
- 0:24winter here, and isn't that good news?
- 0:28And you might be in the last month of summer, and that might
- 0:31be good news for you too, as you look forward to things being a
- 0:34little bit cooler in the autumn months.
- 0:36But what a beautiful, beautiful winter we're enjoying down here
- 0:40in Tassie. Hey, just gorgeous sunshiny
- 0:43days, not too cold at night. Wonderful.
- 0:47And today, as we continue reading through the book of
- 0:51Isaiah, we continue to hear God speaking judgment, and today
- 0:55actually taunting the Babylonian king with Isaiah's words.
- 1:01Now, something that I should have probably mentioned
- 1:03yesterday is that back at the time when this was written,
- 1:07there is a very specific way that people wrote about war and
- 1:11wrote about one Kingdom routing another Kingdom.
- 1:15And that is when they write that they write in broad brushstrokes
- 1:19talking about the destruction of everyone, you know, complete
- 1:23destruction, including babies and children.
- 1:26And that doesn't necessarily mean that every baby in that
- 1:30land was murdered. It's just the way that they
- 1:32wrote to drive home the emphasis of their complete victory over
- 1:38that other country. So often with our modern ears,
- 1:40when we read these passages, it sounds deeply horrendous and
- 1:44troubling, but that's not necessarily the understanding of
- 1:47those who would have read this in their time.
- 1:49They just would have read, oh wow, what a comprehensive
- 1:53victory against that nation. So with that little caveat, we
- 1:58continue reading about God's judgment of the nations and
- 2:02today Babylon as we read together Isaiah, chapter 14.
- 2:12But the Lord will have mercy on the descendants of Jacob.
- 2:21He will choose Israel as His special people once again.
- 2:25He will bring them back to settle once again in their own
- 2:28land, and people from many different nations will come and
- 2:32join them there and unite with the people of Israel.
- 2:35The nations of the world will help the people of Israel to
- 2:38return, and those who come to live in the Lord's land will
- 2:41serve them. Those who captured Israel will
- 2:45themselves be captured, and Israel will rule over its
- 2:49enemies. In that wonderful day when the
- 2:52Lord gives His people rest from sorrow and fear, from slavery
- 2:56and chains, you will taunt the king of Babylon.
- 3:00You will say the mighty man has been destroyed.
- 3:04Yes, your insolence has ended, for the Lord has crushed your
- 3:08wicked power and broken your evil rule.
- 3:11You struck the people with endless blows of rage and held
- 3:15the nations in your angry grip with unrelenting tyranny.
- 3:20But finally the earth is at rest and quiet.
- 3:23Now it can sing again. Even the trees of the forest,
- 3:27the Cypress trees and the Cedars of Lebanon sing out this joyous
- 3:31song. Since you have been cut down, no
- 3:35one will come now to cut us down.
- 3:38In the place of the dead. There is excitement over your
- 3:40arrival. The spirits of world leaders and
- 3:43mighty kings, long dead, stand up to see you with one voice.
- 3:47They all cry out. Now you are as weak as we are.
- 3:52Your might and power were buried with you.
- 3:55The sound of the harp in your palace has ceased.
- 3:59Now maggots are your sheet and worms your blanket.
- 4:03How you are fallen from heaven, oh shining star, sun of the
- 4:07morning you have been thrown down to the earth, you who
- 4:12destroyed the nations of the world.
- 4:14For you said to yourself, I will ascend to heaven and set my
- 4:18throne above God's stars. I will preside on the mountain
- 4:22of the gods, far away in the north.
- 4:24I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most
- 4:28High. Instead you will be brought down
- 4:32to the place of the dead, down to its lowest depths.
- 4:36Everyone there will stare at you and ask, Can this be the one who
- 4:41shook the earth and made the kingdoms of the world tremble?
- 4:45Is this the one who destroyed the world and made it into a
- 4:48wasteland? Is this the king who demolished
- 4:51the world's greatest cities and had no mercy on his prisoners?
- 4:56The King of the Nation's lie in stately glory, each in his own
- 5:01tomb. That you will be thrown out of
- 5:03your grave like a worthless branch, like a corpse trampled
- 5:07under foot, it will be dumped into a mass grave with those
- 5:10killed in battle. You will descend to the pit.
- 5:15You will not be given a proper burial, for you have destroyed
- 5:18your nation and slaughtered your people.
- 5:21The descendants of such an evil person will never again receive
- 5:25honor, kill this man's children, let them die because of their
- 5:29father's sins. They must not rise and conquer
- 5:32the earth, filling the world with their cities.
- 5:35This is what the Lord of Heaven's army says.
- 5:39I myself have risen against Babylon.
- 5:42I will destroy its children and its children's children, says
- 5:47the Lord. I will make Babylon a desolate
- 5:50place of owls filled with swamps and marshes.
- 5:54I will sweep the land with the broom of destruction.
- 5:58I, the Lord of Heaven's armies, have spoken.
- 6:03The Lord of Heaven's armies has sworn this oath.
- 6:06It will all happen as I have planned.
- 6:10It will be as I have decided. I will break the Assyrians when
- 6:15they are in Israel. I will trample them on my
- 6:18mountains. My people will no longer be
- 6:21their slaves, nor bow down under their heavy loads.
- 6:25I have a plan for the whole earth, a hand of judgment upon
- 6:29all the nations the Lord of heaven's armies has spoken.
- 6:33Who can change his plans when the hand is raised?
- 6:36Who can stop him? This message came to me the year
- 6:41King A has died. Do not rejoice, you Philistines,
- 6:47that the rod that struck you was broken, that the king who
- 6:50attacked you was dead. For from that snake a more
- 6:54poisonous snake will be born, a fiery serpent to destroy you.
- 6:59I will feed the poor in my pasture.
- 7:01The needy will lie down in peace.
- 7:05But As for you, I will wipe you out with famine and destroy the
- 7:09few who remain. Wail at the gates, weep in the
- 7:12cities melt with fear. You Philistines.
- 7:16A powerful army comes like smoke from the north.
- 7:20Each soldier rushes forward, eager to fight.
- 7:23What should we tell the Philistine messengers?
- 7:26Tell them the Lord has built Jerusalem.
- 7:30Its walls will give refuge to his oppressed people.
- 7:46You are a just God. The reach and breadth of your
- 7:53understanding is so far beyond ours.
- 7:58And we just thank you that in your eternal vision, in your
- 8:02eternal understanding, you hold us with love and compassion, and
- 8:10you organize things according to your best purpose.
- 8:16When it doesn't make any sense to us.
- 8:18We just pray that you give us your peace and an understanding
- 8:23that in your fullness of time you will bring about your will.
- 8:30Thank you for this divine plan that you play out.
- 8:36We just give you the glory and hand control to you as if we
- 8:42ever had it in the 1st place. But we relinquish our illusion
- 8:46of control and justice, welcome you back to the driver's seat of
- 8:51our lives today and every day, our communities, our nation and
- 8:56our world. You are Sovereign Lord and we
- 8:59just worship you and submit to Your glorious rule.
- 9:06It's in the name of Jesus that we pray all of this come in.
