- 1:06cereals. Uh so, let's go ahead and take a listen to today's episode.
- 1:11This one's the Picture Postcard Matter Parts one and two from Hollywood. It's
- 1:18time now for Johnny Dollar, Tom Wilkins and Global Casualty. Johnny. Oh,
- 1:25hi Tom, how are you doing Lowsey? Right now? I've got
- 1:27one big headache, one hundred thousand dollars headache. Try an icebag and go
- 1:30back to bed. A bag of ice had cure me, all right,
- 1:33but not the kind of ice you're thinking of. One hundred thousand bucks worth
- 1:36of uncut diamonds Johnny, they've been stolen and we wrote the policy one hundred
- 1:40thousand. It's a fat lot of rots, Tom, and a fat fee
- 1:42if you can recover them for us. You interested. Oh, that's the
- 1:45understatement of the week Tonight and every weekday Night, Bob Bailey and the Transcribed
- 1:57Adventures of the Band with the Action Packed Expensicic America's fabulous freelance insurance Investigator Yours
- 2:02Truly, Johnny Dollar. Expense account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar so the
- 2:22home Office Global Casualty, Hertford, Connecticut, following as an account of expenditures
- 2:25during my investigation of the picture postcard matter expenser account, Adam one a dollar
- 2:36and a quarter taxi to the Office of Global Casualty where Tom Wilkins was waiting
- 2:38for me. It looks like we're bucking a pretty well organized outfit in this
- 2:43deal, Johnny. Where they pulled the job shows they planted out pretty well.
- 2:46How did that happen? Tom? And where the diamonds were being taken
- 2:49by a special courier from Zurich, Switzerland to Amsterdam they got lifted at the
- 2:53Zurich airport. How the airport was crowded the courier was carrying the diamonds in
- 2:57a leather briefcase strapped to his wrist, broke out suddenly in a confusion,
- 3:01the courier was slugged and the case cut loose from him, after which the
- 3:05fight suddenly stopped. Tom, Yeah, it was obviously a rigged brawl.
- 3:08By the time the police arrived, the people involved had disappeared with the uncut
- 3:13diamonds. Sounds like their timing was pretty good, too good. How about
- 3:16the courier? You got a look at the guy who slugged him? No,
- 3:19it happened from behind. Anybody in the airport crowd able to describe the
- 3:23guys who'd rigged the brawl, No clear description. Somebody mentioned that one of
- 3:25the men involved with stocky sort of a bullneck. Oh great, Probably only
- 3:30a couple of million people answering that description true. Zurich police turn up anything
- 3:34of thing. Well, look, Tom, I'm an insurance investigator, not
- 3:38a magician. You better get yourself another board. Whoa Johnny, We got
- 3:40one lead and it could be enough if it's on the level. Ah,
- 3:44well, that's of it. The robb Ray was day before yesterday. This
- 3:46morning I got an air mail special Delivery letter from Zurich. You take a
- 3:50look regarding the recent diamond matter. I have information which may enable you to
- 3:57recover them for a reward. So I see, and he wants to talk
- 4:01to somebody about it. Yeah, and I nominate you. It's signs Sebastian.
- 4:05Any idea who he is? None at all? As you see,
- 4:09I was to reply to General Delivery in Zurich. I did told him you
- 4:13were the one. Uh huh? How do I find him? Oh?
- 4:15Read on? You're to register at the Polo Hotel in Zurich. He or
- 4:18she will contact you there. You think it's on the level? I don't
- 4:23know. Could be a phony, somebody trying to a sin and promote a
- 4:26fast Bucket's happened before, sure, and this could be another one. But
- 4:29right now it's the only lead we've got. We've got to take a chance
- 4:31and go along with it. I can't say I care for the PostScript here
- 4:35extreme caution necessary leads me to think, there's one thing you'd better be real
- 4:40sure about, Johnny. What's that that you don't get contacted by the wrong
- 4:43guy. And so, with the sun sinking slowly in the west and my
- 4:49morale slowly following suit, I said goodbye to my cheerful friend and set sail
- 4:54for distant shores. It I'm two six hundred and twenty two dollars playing for
- 4:59an incident to Zurich, Switzerland. It was a quiet, uneventful flight,
- 5:02and I had a lot of time to think. But I didn't much like
- 5:05what I was thinking. Whoever had lifted the uncut stones wouldn't exactly like the
- 5:11idea of an informant spilling the beans to me, and I had a slight
- 5:15hunch I'd be lucky if beans were the only thing that got spilled. My
- 5:26plane landed at Zurich in the late afternoon. I hired a cab that's had
- 5:30him three one dollar to take me to the Polo Hotel. The city looked
- 5:33bright, fresh and clean. It gave me a lift, and the sight
- 5:36of a very pretty girl walking quickly to my cab as we were ready to
- 5:40pull away from the airport didn't hurt either. Wow. Who, I'm so
- 5:46sorry I'd made a mistake. I thought you were somebody else. Yeah,
- 5:49that's the trouble with having an ordinary looking face. Well I wouldn't call it
- 5:53ordinary, but please, well please, I wonder could I share your cab
- 5:58into the city. Oh, by all me, I guess my friend was
- 6:00not done that plane after all. Oh that's rough, okay, driver,
- 6:06Very good of you. Well, I'm a real prince when you get to
- 6:10know me, miss Shafer Johnny Dollar And speaking of getting to know me,
- 6:16hey, how come? Oh? I am so sorry, mister Dalla.
- 6:19I just remembered something I have to do. We were just beginning to get
- 6:23acquainted. I know, isn't it. Look wait you perhaps this will make
- 6:27up for it. Well off, and I can't think of a better start
- 6:32now, if you'll only eat goodbye? Hey, ilse A. Wait,
- 6:39well, if this is the customary Swiss hospitality driver, sign me up.
- 6:46Then I realized that Elsa had forgotten her purse. I had the driver cruise
- 6:49around a few minutes, but we didn't see her anywhere, so I dropped
- 6:51her purse off at the lost and Found office of the taxi cab company,
- 6:55then went onto the Polo Hotel. It was in the newer quarter of Zurich,
- 6:59on the lower slopes of the Zurich Berg. I went inside and started
- 7:02for the desk in the lobby, but I didn't quite make it. Turn
- 7:05here please, sorry, I'm heading for the desk, I said, turned
- 7:10here. Please. You know I can't say I care for the way you
- 7:12keep nudging me in the ribs. That wouldn't be a gun wanted, Yes
- 7:15it would now if you will please come with me, okay, mister ware
- 7:19to through the side entrance. I'll say one thing I shouldn't expect all the
- 7:25reception committees. The first one I like much better? Eh, outside that
- 7:33car over there? Hey, look'st it about time you tell me what this
- 7:38is all about. No use pintending you do not know the diamonds. Oh
- 7:43do you think I've got them? Maybe? I do not think I'm sure
- 7:46of it. Well, this may come as a nasty surprise to you,
- 7:48mister, but I have no time to waste. She entered your cab with
- 7:51a purse, she and ilsa and left without it. And she was sure.
- 7:57We say very friendly to you. Oh I remember, and I have
- 8:01no complaints, believe me. But she didn't give me any diamond I won
- 8:03you. They went in a purse either, They checked the contents and lost
- 8:07and found gave into the car. Hey, look this routine won't get you
- 8:09anywhere into the car. They take it easy, friend, they're trying to
- 8:13poke a hole of my ribs. Okay, okay, right him into the
- 8:16car. I jerked the door open suddenly and a knock him off bounce.
- 8:22I swung at him, but he ducked and lunged at me. I went
- 8:24sprawling into the street in front of an oncoming car. The fenders hit me
- 8:31a glance and blow, and I bounced against the curb. By the time
- 8:33I could get to my feet again, my friend with a gun had disappeared
- 8:35and saw it his car. I wasn't hurt, but it took several minutes
- 8:39to convince the very scared cab driver who'd acidentally hit me he should be scared
- 8:46expense the can had him four twelve dollars and seventy five cents. Telephone call
- 8:50to Tom Wilkins, a global casualty back in the States. I'm glad you
- 8:54called Johnny. Any luck so far? No luck, but sure a lot
- 8:58of action. What do you mean? Well, First off, an attractive
- 9:00little doll shares my cab for a few blocks, plants to kiss on me,
- 9:03and scrambles out, leaving her purse behind. What then a strong arm
- 9:07collars me and tells me the girl must have passed the diamonds to me in
- 9:09the cab, but that doesn't make sense. Well anyway, that's what happened
- 9:13so far, plus my almost getting run over in the process. Look,
- 9:16Johnny, I knew this wouldn't be an easy assignment, but yeah, I
- 9:18know. Don't worry, Tom. I'm still all in one piece. But
- 9:22I'm beginning to realize what Sebastian meant in this letter about extreme caution being necessary.
- 9:26Has anyone contacted you yet? Not only the aforementioned pair, no sign
- 9:31of the Sebastian, whoever he or she is. I still don't understand me,
- 9:35do I Either the boys who stole the diamonds have lost them or there's
- 9:37another outfit trying to get their hands on them, in which case I'm right
- 9:41in the middle. Johnny, Sebastian's still our only lead. You've got to
- 9:45give him plenty of chance to contact Yeah, I know, we'll do,
- 9:48but be careful. Look, I'm with you, believe me. I went
- 9:58up to my room and stretched down on the bed away. Two hours went
- 10:01by, nothing happened. Finally I went down to the lobby. Expensive carldem
- 10:07five thirty cents. Two English language newspapers. I settled down on the most
- 10:11conspicuous chair I could find and waited some more. Still not I worked my
- 10:18way through the newspapers fully. Then finally somebody came over to the chair that
- 10:22was back to back with mine. I took a quick look. He was
- 10:24well dressed, dark wavy hair, medium height, but he paid no attention
- 10:28to me and started reading his newspaper. Looked like a wrong guess. Maybe
- 10:33I'd have to wait until tomorrow, so I started to get out. Mister
- 10:37Dallah, please put your newspaper in front of your face and do not turn
- 10:41around. Okay, oh Sebastian who wrote the letter to your company in the
- 10:48United States? Ah, it must not appear we are talking to each other.
- 10:54Somebody watching. I would not doubt it. So you want to talk
- 10:58about the robbery of those uncut diamonds. How do I know you have any
- 11:01real information? I will give you proof presently, but first let us talk
- 11:05about the reward. What is the amount? Depends on how good the information
- 11:11is? Se question. I am talking about the diamonds. Oh, suppose
- 11:16I were to tell you that I was in a position to guarantee the return
- 11:20go on for twenty five thousand dollars and no further investigation. I will arrange
- 11:26for the return of the diamonds. I have the proof that you know what
- 11:31you're talking about. Of course, let me see. My back is to
- 11:35you. Is it your right hand, which is closest to the wall and
- 11:39shielded from the lobby. Yeah, put it down beside your chair. Do
- 11:46not take the newspaper away from your face. Okay. Here that's your postcard,
- 11:54Yes, addressed to me as you see. The writing is in German.
- 11:58What does it mean? It is the equivalent of your American expression having
- 12:03wonderful time, wish you were here, f runner? Who's he or she?
- 12:11A friend? Look at the picture on the other side, the Cliba
- 12:16again, Yes, and inn in the town of Clibach in the Alps,
- 12:20several hours from you. Wait a minute, Are the diamonds at the cliba
- 12:22again? No, but this postcard is part of the key to their location,
- 12:28part of the Oh now looks se passion. This just isn't good enough.
- 12:31I can't someone is coming. I cannot talk further with you here.
- 12:39It is not safe. Do not worry. I will furnish all the proof
- 12:43you need tonight. Now listen carefully. I am going I will leave my
- 12:48newspaper on the floor beside my chair. Wait a few minutes, then get
- 12:52up, wrap your paper, and when you pick it up, pick up
- 12:54mine also. Then on an inner page of my paper, I have written
- 12:58my dress come there in two hours. If I am not there, wake
- 13:03for me now just a minute, How can I please? There is no
- 13:05time for further questions. Two hours mister Donner in my room. Two hours
- 13:15later I went to the address. It gave me, a small apartment in
- 13:18another part of the city. Now answered, he hadn't arrived yet. I
- 13:28went inside and waited. Fifteen minutes went quiet, no sign of Sebastian.
- 13:37And then something started pecking away at my brain, A faint sound. I
- 13:43finally pegged it a dripping faucet. It came from the bathroom. The bathtub
- 13:52was full in it, floating face down was Sebastian. Inspector Herdeger of the
- 14:16Zurich Police, Hair Dallar. Oh, yeah, Inspector, I talked to
- 14:20one of your men last night. Yeah, when you report the murder of
- 14:22this man called Sebastian. Yeah, any line on this killer not as yet,
- 14:26we are somewhat at a loss as to motive. Then I think I
- 14:28can suppli. So Sebastian apparently had information about the robbery of some uncut diamonds
- 14:33here in Zurich, and he was willing to sell his information, but somebody
- 14:37called off the sale permanently. So find a man who lifted the stones,
- 14:41and we'll have Sebastian's killer. Perhaps you don't sound convinced. It appears quite
- 14:46possible, hair Dollar, that Sebastian was killed by a woman. On account
- 15:00submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the Home Office Global Casually Hertford, Connecticut
- 15:05assignment the picture postcard matter location Zuric, Switzerland, expense account continued itam six
- 15:16one dollar even cav fair from the Polo Hotel the police headquarters. Inspector Herniger
- 15:20was a big man who moved and talked slowly. One look at his very
- 15:24cold slate gray eyes told you his brain was moving a lot faster here.
- 15:28Dollar, I believe you told my lieutenant last evening that you were an insurance
- 15:33investigator. That's right, I inspected, and that you are in Zurich to
- 15:37investigate loss of a one hundred thousand American dollars in diamonds at the airport a
- 15:41few days ago. Right, Well, perhaps you had better supply me with
- 15:45such background as you may have. Finally, the robbery itself, of course,
- 15:50you know, but a fight broke out at the airport. They know
- 15:52that it was, as you say, raped to create confusion. Yeah.
- 15:56And in the confusion the courier who was carrying the stones was slugged. His
- 16:00briefcase was cut away from his wrist, whereupon the assailants quickly melted away into
- 16:03the crowd. The exactness of their timing suggests that they were well organized and
- 16:08had planned a robbery in some detail. The next day, the company I'm
- 16:11representing got a letter from this man Sebastian. He claimed to have information on
- 16:15the robbery and will help us recover the stones for a price. And you
- 16:18were sent to contact this Sebastian, Yeah, or rather I was sent here
- 16:22so that Sebastian could contact me, and did he did, But as it
- 16:26turned out, he practically had to stand in line. I am afraid I
- 16:30do not follow you. Well. First off, a very attractive young lady
- 16:33popped into my cab as I was leaving the airport for the hotel, asked
- 16:37to share the cab or Two blocks later, she had the driver stop,
- 16:40planted a kiss on me and jumped out. Indeed, you Americans seem to
- 16:45work fast here dollar Yeah, I'm afraid I can't chalk up the incident to
- 16:48my personal charm inspect Then she left her person in the cab, and I
- 16:52gather the idea was to make somebody else think she'd passed the diamonds to me.
- 16:56And who would this somebody else be? A guy who jumped me in
- 17:00the lobby of the Polo Hotel. He was pretty convinced I had the stones.
- 17:03And how would the dead men Sebastian fit in. Well, that's my
- 17:07hunch. Sebastian was a member of the outfit who stole them in the first
- 17:11place. He could have been trying to play both ends against the middle.
- 17:14How do you arrive at that conclusion? Well, look, we know there
- 17:18were several members of the group. Okay, so they're bound to take a
- 17:21big loss when they fenced the diamonds. They'd be lucky to get half the
- 17:23value, which would be fifty thousand through split three or four ways. That
- 17:27would cut the shares down considerably. But if Sebastian could engineer the return of
- 17:32the stones and collect a twenty five thousand dollars reward for it. He'd be
- 17:36way ahead of the game. And Sebastian was secretly negotiating with you, Yeah,
- 17:40behind a newspaper in the hotel lobby. He wanted me to meet him
- 17:42in his room later so we could talk. I went there. I found
- 17:45him in the bathtub dead and he had given you no specific information as to
- 17:49the location of the diamonds. Only Di's inspector. It picted your postcard uh
- 17:56a klyiback In. He told me clibak was resort village up in the Alps.
- 18:00I know the place. The card is addressed to Sebastian, signed by
- 18:07if Gruner. He said Grunner was a friend of his. Perhaps the diamonds
- 18:10at the Clibachi in. He said no, that this card was only part
- 18:14of the key to finding them, and he gave you no indication as to
- 18:17what the rest of the key to their location was. No, none at
- 18:19all. I gather that's what we were going to talk about in his room
- 18:23later. But somebody else apparently had a different idea. Yeah said, look
- 18:29you you said over the phone that Sebastian's killer could have been a woman.
- 18:32Well, he was struck on the head from behind, but only hard enough
- 18:36to stun him. His death was due to drowning in the bathtub. Many
- 18:40times in our experienced women have chosen such a method. The woman then could
- 18:45be ilso Yeah, or perhaps one of Sebastian's gang who learned of his plans
- 18:51very annoying, had many possibilities but nothing tangible. Well, I'm heading for
- 18:56that place on the postcard aspector the clyibaki in Yeah. At this point,
- 19:00part of a key is better than none. Expense account it am seven sixteen
- 19:11dollars and twenty cents American Transportation and incidentals to the cliback in the postcard didn't
- 19:15do justice to the place. The village nestled in a little meadow blow some
- 19:19towering peaks, oh Bove. It was the inn, a llet type building
- 19:25that looked out over the valley, and it was a peaceful scene. A
- 19:27few cows in the meadow with jangling bells, a lot of snow on the
- 19:30peaks, a sky of startlingly clear blue, and a few wisps of clouds
- 19:37nudging the peaks. Inside the inn looked spacious and comfortable, with a friendly
- 19:42fire crackling in the huge fireplace and a friendly looking fellow behind the desk.
- 19:48Welcome to the clibuck In. Oh thanks, please sign here? Okay,
- 19:53thank you? Dollar? Is it? Yeah? Are you the managing Yeah?
- 19:57I am other freed your host. Maybe you can help me. I
- 20:00am at your service. Take a look at this postcard. That is not
- 20:07a good picture of the inn. I had some new ones made. You
- 20:11see the lighting is wrong in this picture. The entire Norse things in the
- 20:15shadows. Now it's a good picture. Yeah. Yeah, Well what I
- 20:18want to know is do you sell these cards here? Not those cards?
- 20:22No? I have the new cards. See here's one. See how much
- 20:26better? About in the village? Do they sell the old cards there?
- 20:30Yeah? I'm afraid so in one or two shops. I have told them
- 20:34a hundred times. I will give them the new ones if only Yeah,
- 20:37you see it, Yes, it's the lightning. You ever hear the name
- 20:41Sebastian around here? Sebastian Sebastions No need to memorize it. Just tell me
- 20:48if you've heard it? Please? Is it the first name or last name?
- 20:52There? You've got me SEBASTIONI No, I do not remember hearing that
- 20:56name. I'll be glad to check my How about F. Brooner He's the
- 21:02one who sent the cardis Sebastian Grooner Groom? Perhaps I heard the name in
- 21:07the village somewhere, or I see what I can find out. Okay,
- 21:11thanks. In the meantime, I hope you will be comfortable here and enjoy
- 21:14your visit. Ski you tuipment to set your disposal. Thanks, but I'll
- 21:18enjoy my visit a lot more if I can find F. Bruner. Okay,
- 21:37okay, yeah, Oh, I say I'm looking for a trap named
- 21:42Dollar. I was supposed to be occupying this room. I'm Johnny Dollar.
- 21:45You you are certain reasonably what a pity. Well, I'm sorry, old
- 21:52man, but there's not very much I can do about it. Oh,
- 21:53I didn't mean that, I say you must forgive me. Well, I
- 21:56mean, well, you see, I used to know a trap in London
- 21:59named a delightful fellow. Really incidentally, I'm Jeffrey Harris. We had ripping
- 22:03times together, hot jolly for him. And when I heard that a trap
- 22:07named Dollar had registered here at the Inn, well, naturally I thought it
- 22:08must be oh Bunny Bunny, Yes, old Bunny Dollar. Oh Bunny was
- 22:12just a dick. Nickname. You see, that's reassuring, Harris. You
- 22:15know there is a bit of a resemblance. You wouldn't mind a chance to
- 22:18be his brother or cousin, would you? No? Well, after all,
- 22:22Dollar's a bit of an odd name, and I know I'm sorry.
- 22:23If you'll excuse me, I'm on my way downstairs. Oh splendid will sell
- 22:26am? I? Oh, there's quite a coincidence, is listen? Running
- 22:33through in this way? I mean you're absolutely sure that you don't know Bunny
- 22:37Dollar this, I can guarantee. What a pity. He's really worlds of
- 22:41fun. Oh yes, I can imagine. What's there? Oh? Nothing,
- 22:47I just brought an old friend over at the bar sela Harris, Oh,
- 22:51I say so, I can see your pointo man. Well, hello,
- 22:57else, it is Ilsa Shaeffer, isn't it. You're the one,
- 23:03that's right, Johnny Dollar, the one you shared a cab with back and
- 23:07sorry. Yes, of course, what a coincidence, isn't it? Incidentally,
- 23:14Johnny, I want to thank you for turning my person. Was foolish
- 23:18of me to leave it in your cab. Just an oversight, huh,
- 23:22But yes, of course, I mean you didn't buy any chance leave it
- 23:25in a cab on purpose, of course not. Why would I do a
- 23:29thing like that? Oh? Maybe so somebody else would think you passed something
- 23:33along to me in that cab besides a kiss. I suppose I shouldn't have
- 23:38been so impulsive. Oh, I didn't object to that, But I did
- 23:42object to a muscle man jumping me and acting like you had given me something?
- 23:48What was I supposed to have given you? You don't have any idea?
- 23:52No, honestly I don't. Okay, what about that ride for the
- 23:56time being? Mind if I ask what you're doing here at the club again?
- 24:00Oh, this is a favorite spot of mine. I like to ski.
- 24:06Oh, you don't thing convince I really am quite a good skier,
- 24:11Johnny. As a matter of fact, I plan to go skiing in the
- 24:15morning. Would you like to come with me? Well that might be pretty
- 24:19interesting. Just a minute, I'll go check with out. I'll see if
- 24:22I go a bar some skis. Be right back, all right, Johnny?
- 24:27Oh her dollar? Now? I am enjoying your stage so far?
- 24:30Just fine, out of fine. A look about that girl over at the
- 24:33bar while I'm shifa A most attractive young lady, No, a most attractive
- 24:38young lady. Yes, that seems to be a favorite part of her.
- 24:42I'm very happy to hear that her dollar. I suppose she comes here often.
- 24:45This is her first visit to the climbarkin You sure about that? Of
- 24:51course, I would certainly remember a young lady like her. Yes, this
- 24:55is her first visit, but I hope it will not be her last.
- 24:59Don't count on her, I don't so. Elsa was lying about coming here
- 25:10all time. That could mean she'd lied about a few other things too,
- 25:12like leaving her person in my camp. And accidentally, she might have been
- 25:17trying to make it look like she'd passed the stolen diamonds onto me and let's
- 25:19take the heat off herself and whoever she was working with. I remembered what
- 25:23Inspector Huninger had told me that Sebastian's killer could be a woman. I went
- 25:29back to the bar. Did you arrange for the skis? Yeah? Yeah,
- 25:33I guess I'm all set good tomorrow morning? Then I were well,
- 25:38I had in mind the north slope, But perhaps you would not like that?
- 25:44Why not? Some people consider it too dangerous. Oh, I don't
- 25:48think I should worry about the danger, do you? After all? Elsa
- 25:52I'll be in the best of hands. Thank you. I'm sure you'll take
- 25:56good care of me. I will certainly try to. Johnny. Now here's

- 27:14exciting episode of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Roy Rowan speaking welcome back. Well,
- 28:21I have to say that I love the setup here classic. I like
- 28:26the picture postcard as the big insiding clue here, so I think will be
- 28:33fun. It's somewhat of a you know, almost stereotypical setup, but the
- 28:37setup is so wonderful. You know, you get all the suspects together,
- 28:42and you've got so much misdirection going on, and we've got another three parts
- 28:48to get this all resolved. All right. Well, I do have some
- 28:52listener comments and feedback Kara, who supported the show, just had a simple
