- 1:34delicate Mike Pushkin with some election results when what happens just over here on Tuesday
- 1:38night. Mike, how you doing, man, I'm doing great. Thanks
- 1:41for having me on. First of all, I just wanted some of my
- 1:44condolences out or my you know. My thoughts are with friend Doug scaff a
- 1:48horrible accident while picking up campaign signs down in Boone County. I have texted
- 1:53back and forth with him this morning and he seems to be in good spirits,
- 1:56and I think he's gonna be fine, but he's gonna have to be
- 1:59laid up a little bit. Had a little bit of a problem when he
- 2:00was taking signs down, and Dougs contacted us this morning as well and wanted
- 2:07for folks to be aware that that he knows that there's still signs out there
- 2:09and that he will pull them down. That this isn't like anything option or
- 2:13everything. Just to be patient with him because he's not doing so well right
- 2:15now. But he's going to be okay, I think, as it was
- 2:16multiple snake bites, yeah, copperhead bights, copper heads on both legs.
- 2:21Yeah, yeah, so that's not good, Dougs. Dougs seems like he's
- 2:23going to be okay. Yeah, we do have a statement from him this
- 2:25morning. But if you happen to see one of his signs, feel free
- 2:28to take it down, he said, or he's going to be coming around
- 2:30and doing that himself. Awesome. Be careful when you're out there picking up
- 2:34those signs or out there in general, there's you know, be aware of
- 2:38your surroundings. A lot of poisonous snakes out there. It's pretty crazy because
- 2:40when I was a kid, there there was a lot of Copperhead sightings,
- 2:43and I think that maybe we've lost a little bit of resolution of that because
- 2:46we don't se him as much anymore. When I was a kid, that
- 2:47was a thing that we looked out for quite a bit. I used to
- 2:50see them all the time. Yeah, me too, Me too. Have
- 2:52grown up, so man, I know, Uh, election is election is
- 2:55over? Of course, Uh, maybe not a lot of surprises. And
- 3:00West Virginia in general, maybe if you hear and there, depending on where
- 3:01you're at in your localities and stuff. What's your takeaway from a perspective the
- 3:06Democratic Party, Well, first of all, I think overall, as we
- 3:08expected, the turnout was a lot slower than usual. I think that can
- 3:15be attributed to the fact that both of the at the top of the ticket
- 3:19on both sides the presidential election was we know who the nominees were going to
- 3:23be, so there was not a contested presidential primary on either ballot. And
- 3:28also, I think we should mention all the negative campaigning, mainly on the
- 3:32Republican side, almost entirely on the Republican side, does drive down voter turnout.
- 3:38It does suppress votes when people are just inundated with negativity and just a
- 3:43ridiculous commercials non stop. They are not the least bit substantive, just attacking
- 3:50the other people for the craziest things. That does drive down turnout. So
- 3:54yeah, as we expected turnout was low. We also expected there would be
- 3:59a lot more of the Independence would be would be picking up Republican ballots because
- 4:02that's where all the money was being spent on advertising. Of course, they
- 4:05had more primary elections on their side, so you'd say there was more action
- 4:11on that side, although we had some very important primaries on our side as
- 4:14well, so it's no surprise that more Republican ballots were picked up by Independence.
- 4:19How we feel a lot of those folks were going in there to vote
- 4:23against somebody, not necessarily vote for somebody, to vote against somebody, and
- 4:26we feel a lot of those independences will be voting for Democrats in the fall.
- 4:30I know that. That's I've heard that, and there was a lot
- 4:32of a lot of the negativity draws things like that, though that will cause
- 4:35somebody to get a ballot to vote against somebody, because and the crazy thing
- 4:40is, it's not necessarily that the ads work on what they're talking about.
- 4:44People will get mad at the ad and then vote against the person that put
- 4:46out the ad that the gain. It does happen like that from time to
- 4:49time. Yes, it's just it's crazy to think about it from that way.
- 4:54So as far as the Democrats going forward on what you're looking at now,
- 4:57as far as as we go into November for the general election, Uh,
- 5:00where are you looking to make progress at in West Virginia? Where do
- 5:03you think your strengths could be or where do you think that you might be
- 5:05able to make some great Well, our strengths are in the caliber of candidates
- 5:10that we have, especially with our statewide ticket. We feel that our candidates
- 5:15are actually more qualified to do the job that they're seeking. Starting with Governor,
- 5:21I'm Mayor Steele, are getting ahead of myself. Mayor Steve Williams from
- 5:27Huntington, the only three term mayor. Of course you're there's a term limit
- 5:30for mayor in Huntington. He's done his three terms. He's the only mayor
- 5:34in Huntington history to ever uh, to ever serve three terms. And he's
- 5:40done so because he's done a good job. People over there like him because
- 5:43of the job that he's doing, and they've kept re electing him. And
- 5:46remember when he when he became mayor the first time, Huntington was in a
- 5:49financial crisis, and he has really turned that city around. And uh,
- 5:55you know, they're now called what the City of Solutions because of the way
- 5:59that they've addressed the op void crisis and h and other issues that affect many
- 6:02of our population centers. Steve's done a great job and he's got a great
- 6:05story to tell, and I think he's he's more qualified than the Republican nominee
- 6:13that that won. And I remember too, I've noticed all the I mean,
- 6:16I look at all the money that's being spent on the Republican side and
- 6:19between the independent expenditures and the campaign itself that you know, millions of dollars
- 6:26spent boosting Patrick Morsey, but they never could get him above what thirty two
- 6:30or thirty three percent, about a third of the vote. And I realized
- 6:33it's a crowded primary. But still he's got a ceiling. And uh,
- 6:38I've got I've got a very good, very good feeling about about Steve Williams,
- 6:43and I think he's going to work very hard and uh, and I
- 6:46think he will make a better governor and we'll see in the fall. Now
- 6:51down we also we had a contested primary for US Senate, and first of
- 6:58all, I want to thank Zach Shrewsbury community organizer, and he had a
- 7:04big campaign staff and all the people, the volunteers and staffers on his campaign
- 7:09did a great job of energizing the voters all over this state. He did
- 7:15a great job and he should be proud of himself and congratulate him on a
- 7:18well run campaign. Mayor Glen Elliott, another mayor from the city of Wheeling,
- 7:25we wound up being the nominee for our party for US Senate. He
- 7:29also has a great story to tell and he's done a great job and as
- 7:31a two term mayor in the city of Wheeling, it's also done a lot
- 7:35for economic development in that part of the state. And also when he was
- 7:41I think right out of law school. I believe he was an intern for
- 7:43Senator Birds, So he knows how things work in the Senate and he knows
- 7:46that the only way he can do that is to reach across the aisle and
- 7:49compromise and work with everybody. And I think he's going to make a great,
- 7:54great US Senator. We have up and down the ballot that we have
- 7:58candidates that are just morequalified to do the job for Attorney General. Teresa Torseevo
- 8:03won our primary. Uh. If you were going into into a courtroom and
- 8:07you needed a good lawyer, Uh, that's what you're gonna call. Not
- 8:09the folks who are running on the other side. Teresa has tons of courtroom
- 8:13experience. She has represented first responders. She's represented police officers and firefighters across
- 8:20the state and fights to make sure that they get their benefits and their pensions.
- 8:24She is She's represented some of the young cadets at the at the State
- 8:28Police Academy that are having that are that are not suing the State Police Academy.
- 8:33Now she's represented down here in Charleston, I believe for a girls basketball
- 8:39teams. Came down here and took up for a girls basketball team that was
- 8:41being shut out of being able to play in like the the All Star League.
- 8:46She's just done a has more courtroom experience than than anybody that's running quite
- 8:50some time. And not to mention, she will be the first female attorney
- 8:54general in the state. In the auditors race, this might sound crazy,
- 9:01We're actually running an actual auditor Mariannklater has twenty years of experience as an auditor.
- 9:07She actually knows how to do the job. And quite frankly, she's
- 9:11running against a career politician who's probably been on every ballot in most of my
- 9:18lifetime, and we have a candidate actually knows knows how to do the job
- 9:22and knows what the job is. So I like her chances. I could
- 9:28go on, well, what do you think. I wanted to look at
- 9:31the Senate and the governor's race for a moment, because you mentioned with Williams
- 9:35and Elliott, two quality candidates that you're putting forward. The uphill battle,
- 9:39of course, is you're going for a state wide office against folks that have
- 9:43held state wide office, and so your battle is name recognition on that.
- 9:46How do you approach that as far as getting the word out there, nobody,
- 9:50we all know it's going to be an uphill battle. We know what
- 9:52the climate is for Democrats in this state. It's going to be a huge
- 9:54uphill battle. But I like that we're leading our ticket with mayors who've actually
- 9:58had, you know, been They've made budgets, they've they've balanced budgets for
- 10:03their cities. They have dealt with real issues. I mean, it doesn't
- 10:05get any more closer to home than the work of a mayor. You can
- 10:09ask our mayor here, Amy Goodwin, the amount of work that goes into
- 10:13that, and that's the work that actually affects the day to day lives of
- 10:16citizens. Uh So, I like that we're leading with our mayors and they
- 10:20have records to stand on, and they're in They're very impressive records. They
- 10:26have something to run on, that's for sure. Taking a look at the
- 10:28other side for just a moment seems a little unusual to me. And I'm
- 10:31as as not of an expert is possible in these matters, but it seems
- 10:35to me a little odd that once again we lose the Senate president on on
- 10:39the other side of the asl for the Republic. It was incredibly I would
- 10:43that was the biggest surprise of the night, because first of all, it
- 10:46was a three way primary, which would normally favor the incumbent, especially the
- 10:50incumbent who most likely I'm pretty sure it has the largest war chest of any
- 10:56of any member of the legislature, and he has that and he had that
- 11:01war chest because it's been no secret the like pay to play type stuff that's
- 11:09been going on in the state legislature lately. If you want to get something
- 11:13in front of the Republican caucus in the Senate, we've been told lobbyists have
- 11:16to pony up about ten thousand dollars to get in front of the Senate caucus.
- 11:22That's how it's been since Senator Blair has been Senate President. So you
- 11:26would think with that amount of grift going on that he would have had a
- 11:28big enough war chest to fend off not one, but two primary opponents.
- 11:33But apparently, I guess people are just tired of that kind of politics and
- 11:37he lost. That's interesting. There's a general there's still an anti it's not
- 11:43anti established and anti incumbency. It seems like a vane that's running through the
- 11:48state. In a lot of ways, incumbents aren't always safe, you're notwithstanding,
- 11:52of course, I don't take anything for granted, but no, I
- 11:56think people are tired with the way things are being done. And I've been
- 12:01on here before talking about it, but you know it, really it bothers
- 12:05me that we have this this sort of like pay to play scheme going on
- 12:09in our state Senate. So only those who can afford to pony up are
- 12:16able to have their side heard in front of the Republican Caucus. You know,
- 12:20it's like, we represent people in our district, most vast majority of
- 12:24them can't come up with ten thousand dollars, and we're supposed to be giving
- 12:26them equal representation too. So that kind of stuff really really ticks me off.
- 12:31So I didn't shed a whole lot of tears over Senate President Blair,
- 12:35although it'll be interesting to see in the dynamics in the Senate, and I
- 12:37think a lot of it has to do with the whoever will be appointed,
- 12:41you know, of course to Justice Trump once he's sworn, it'll be Justice
- 12:46Trump. Charlie Trump will have to resign at some point, somebody will be
- 12:50appointed to that district. And of course if Mark Hunt is able to you
- 12:54know, we'll see what happens with the with the auditors race, but somebody
- 12:58could be appointed there. But there's a lot that's going to age the dynamics.
- 13:01But now there were some very interesting races and that was probably the biggest
- 13:07surprise though. So as we look forward in coming up one another year,
- 13:11of course, this is an election year, so getting anything done from a
- 13:13policy standpoint, I don't know how those things will go about. We're still
- 13:16in waiting to see if there's going to be some kind of special session in
- 13:20West Virginia as far as finding ways to find any and I know that you
- 13:26work very hard in doing that, and many Democratic representatives do o Kaylle Young
- 13:30tries to do a good job too, finding trying to find some common grounds
- 13:33somewhere to work on to get positive things that help the people of West Virginia
- 13:37through what's our outlook on that? In the you say it helped people of
- 13:41West Virginia. At very least, we shouldn't be harming them. And right
- 13:43now there are a whole lot of people in the state that have this cloud
- 13:46of uncertainty over their lives, mainly a lot of it with the pulling the
- 13:52funds from the IBB Waiver program. So families and loved ones of people who
- 13:58have intellectual and developmental disabilities are just in a state of panic right now,
- 14:01and they shouldn't be. That's something we should have left alone. Instead,
- 14:05we're waiting to find out if there's a special session, so at the very
- 14:09least, the very least to put that money back in into the Medicaid funding
- 14:13so they're able to continue to get you know, direct care workers into their
- 14:18homes to help them take care to people who need a little extra help.
- 14:22So I'm hoping that we have that special session in order to do that.
- 14:26I'm not exactly sure when I know, we do have interims scheduled just for
- 14:28Monday and Tuesday, just two days of interims, so there is some time
- 14:33blocked, you know, around lunchtime, but that's not out of the ordinary
- 14:37for them to have no meetings scheduled around lunchtime. There could be a special
- 14:41session in there. But we're talking about you know, Monday and Tuesday next
- 14:45week and we've not heard anything yet. So hopefully there, you know,
- 14:48the negotiations are going on and we can figure out what will be on the
- 14:52call and at the very least to restore the money to the IDD waiver program.
- 14:56Now, of course, Mayor Williams running for governor and the Democratic nominee
- 15:03for governor has been very vocal and persistent in calling for the current governor to
- 15:07put reproductive freedom on the ballot, to put on the call a resolution that
- 15:13will have a constitutional amendment to protect reproductive freedom and that would allow the voters
- 15:18of West Virginia to decide for themselves, just like in many other states where
- 15:22it's been on the ballot, and in every other state, whether it's a
- 15:26red and it's always actually it's been in red states where it's been on the
- 15:28ballot, the voters have been on the side of freedom and they've decided to
- 15:33protect that right that women have had in this country for over fifty years.
- 15:37So I do support that. Two quick things. One in observation about the
- 15:43reproductive freedom going on the ballot. The one thing, regardless of where you
- 15:46stand on this, the one thing that I find kind of funny is you
- 15:48hear people that talk about at some point in time about letting the people decide,
- 15:54and then it seems like that when you start talking about letting the people
- 15:58decide, it's like, well, i'm your elected represent that if you elect
- 16:00me to make those decisions for you, it's got to be one or the
- 16:03other, either the people decide. I mean, you can't play it both
- 16:06ways. If you want to throw that out there all the time when it
- 16:07comes to making choices about things, using that as a place to retreat to
- 16:11when you don't want to actually take a position is kind of weak sauce,
- 16:15you know, on an issue this important that affects, you know, so
- 16:18many lives, especially the lives of young women in this state. I think
- 16:22it's important enough that we let the people decide on this issue, and if
- 16:27people are against it, well, then they can go out and vote against
- 16:30it, I think. But I don't know what the Republicans are so afraid
- 16:33of. And if they feel that this is the will of the people that
- 16:36they've upheld by this complete and total abortion band that they passed in West Virginia,
- 16:40if they feel that that's the will of people, then let's put it
- 16:42to a test and then put it to a vote. Just about ninety seconds
- 16:45left. I just briefly because we touched on it just a moment ago and
- 16:48in talking about with the waivers and things like that. But as an older
- 16:52dad, as with a six year old kid, I'm concerned about the state
- 16:57of children in general in it state, whether it be in the foster situations
- 17:03that we have, whether it be in other sorts of homes, and even
- 17:04in our classrooms. We've seen results from from school choice that have depleted county
- 17:11funds. I don't think there's any question that you can that you can point
- 17:14to some of these things that are happening. I worry about public education.
- 17:18I worry about where I'm going to end up end up with my kid.
- 17:19We've been homeschooling up to a point, but we can't. We we're not
- 17:22equipped to homeschool past first or second grade or something. You know. We
- 17:26need we need educators to help us with that, and I share your concern.
- 17:30It really needs to be more of a priority to improve the lot for
- 17:34public education in this state, and something that we haven't been we need to
- 17:38get. We have only a few seconds left. We need to mention.
- 17:41We also need to fix the childcare crisis in this state. That's a workforce
- 17:45issue. That is the industry that supports every other industry, so young parents
- 17:51are able to get to work, and there's just a lack of options when
- 17:53it comes to childcare. And that's because the reimbursement rates are based on attendance
- 17:59rather than in roll. We need to base it on enrollment so these places
- 18:03are able to stay in business. Every week, it seems like we're losing
- 18:06another childcare provider and many, many folks in the state don't have access to
- 18:12it, and they're unable to get back to work, and that's something else
- 18:15that we need to put on the special session call. It's delicate. Mike
- 18:18Pushkin from Conall County. Thanks so much for your time, Mike and your
- 18:21evaluation what's been going on. We appreciate you coming on the law grabbing me
- 18:23on No probad All. That's Mike pushing coming up in just a second that
- 18:26we have Sam Somemerville who's going to be with us. We want to talk
- 18:27about the Charlie West Barbecue Fest that's coming up. We're going to talk about
- 18:32that, and as well, Tim Brady's going to be here from the Charleston
- 18:34CVB. Not only is the Great Bike Race coming through right now, but

- 22:00with Charlie West Barbecue Fest, which is coming up, and I can't wait
- 22:07to talk about some barbecue this morning. Sam, good morning. How you
- 22:10doing this morning? I'm going great, Dale, how are you doing.
- 22:12I'm doing very very well. Looking forward to talking about the Charlie West Barbecue
- 22:17Fest, which is an annual event in Charleston. It benefits the Bob Burdett
- 22:19Center, which provides after school programs for local families. Attendees can purchase barbecue
- 22:25from different vendors and sample competition. I'll let you get into the details of
- 22:29this thing because it's a great event that's been going on for some time now.
- 22:32Thank you. It really is. This is our seventh year that we've
- 22:34been doing that. We took a break during COVID, of course, but
- 22:37this is our seventh year and it's a little bit different this year in terms
- 22:41of location. Usually we have it down in the Boulevard, and obviously because
- 22:45of the USA Championship bicycle races, that's not going to happen this year.
- 22:49But we've worked with the city and we're going to be at City Center at
- 22:52Slack Plaza this year. Oh great, And so it's going to be on
- 22:56Saturday from two to seven pm at City Center. So that's just right downtown
- 23:02Charleston, between between Summer Street and the mall. You can you can get
- 23:06there very easily. I walk by there just about every day I go through
- 23:08there. It's a great location, got plenty of room, easily accessible.
- 23:11They're seating and everything by. There's a there's a stage that's up. There's
- 23:15gonna be a good time. It is. I think it's going to be
- 23:18neat. We're really excited with a number of people that that are going to
- 23:22be downtown, just a lot of activities we're going to be Actually, if
- 23:26you know the transit mall is there in terms of the bus that that's going
- 23:29to be close or we're going to be out on that street. There'll be
- 23:30p room for people to move around. We will have live music from the
- 23:34stage. We have three different groups that will be playing during the day.
- 23:38So that's that's going to be really neat. We'll be announcing our sponsors from
- 23:41the stage as well. But uh, it's it's always a great event benefiting
- 23:47our after school program on on the West Side to Bob or Dead Center.
- 23:49What are some of the competitions and categories that people are going to experience.
- 23:52Well, thanks that there are basically three different categories that we have commercial folks
- 23:59that you know have have either food trucks or have permanent restaurants. They'll be
- 24:03coming down participating. We have our competition folks, and they are ones who
- 24:07do this on a regular basis. And then we have our backyard competition and
- 24:12these are guys who like to that's your smoke pit guys, guys back there
- 24:17that do it themselves exactly. They're doing themselves and it's always a lot of
- 24:21fun talking with people and just talking about what they're fixing, how they do
- 24:25it, and just having it's a great time. What's incredible to me when
- 24:29you talk about people about barbecue, and no matter what area you subscribe to,
- 24:33I guess if you're like in the Carolinas or Texas or Saint Louis or
- 24:34whatever it might be, Man, these folks are like scientists when you talk
- 24:38to them, man, I mean they have like the formulas they use and
- 24:41the way that they cook their meat and the timing they use and stuff like
- 24:45that. It's fascinating to learn about it is and they have their secret recipes
- 24:48too, just like you you know so, but but you know, they'll
- 24:52be competing in different categories obviously best barbecue, best sauce, best ribs,
- 24:57and then the backyard folks have a wild card category in which they fix whatever
- 25:03they want and the judges look at that and evaluate that as well. And
- 25:07we've really had some interesting ones. We've had smoked duck casadillas in the past.
- 25:12We had smoke quale eggs one year, which was really good. It
- 25:17was really interesting. So they're really creative and come up with a lot of
- 25:21great food. Really, I wonder if you can barbecue squirrel. It seems
- 25:23like something you could do that definitely would be a West Virginia or an Appalachian
- 25:30barbecue in private. A way to put that together. Tell us a little
- 25:33bit about the barber Deet Center. Tell us about what it does, how
- 25:37it helps benefit the West Side. Well, thanks, we you know,
- 25:40actually, Barbardet Center, we're in our twenty fifth year providing yes, and
- 25:44it's amazing and time really flies by, but we're in our twenty fifth year
- 25:47providing after school program services on the West Side. We served roughly one hundred
- 25:52and seventy five students a day, elementary school students and it's free for their
- 25:56parents and they come there every day after school. We have three different locations.
- 26:02But the children come to they come there and immediately as soon as they
- 26:04get there, we serve them a meal, so you know, they go
- 26:07home of a needning having having a full meal, and then we also give
- 26:12them a snack prior to the time that they leave. But we have different
- 26:15events or activities. Obviously, homework is key. We have certified teachers and
- 26:22tutors that work with them on working with them on on homework. We also
- 26:27have obviously different physical activities. We have dance, we have team sports,
- 26:33and then uh, just all kinds of different activities to help our families and
- 26:38their students. What a great benefit to the community it is. It's really
- 26:42an awesome program. Uh we've served I don't know, I mean, it's
- 26:47amazing the number of students that we've served over the years, and uh,
- 26:51really it's it's a way to really help students thrive. We also have summer
- 26:56programming so students can come in the summer they keep those skills up. Obviously,
- 27:00we focus on a lot of things that will help them later on life.
- 27:03We believe not just educational skills, academic skills, but life skills as
- 27:08well. Oh that's great, I mean that's what our youth needs and that
- 27:11those types of programs and outlets is exactly what we need. So this is
- 27:15such a great cause to get involved with. It is and I want to
- 27:18really give credit to our staff as well, because I mean, it's it's
- 27:22easy. We can you know, you can put kids in front of a
- 27:25laptop or a computer and you can do that, but are we have a
- 27:27staff that are really that are really vested in this program and they really care
- 27:32about our students. And that means a lot for a child coming in knowing
- 27:34that they're carrid about that there's consistency, the same people are going to be
- 27:37there and and love them every day, and that that is wonderful. Is
- 27:41there is it from the past, either from something from the center or something
- 27:45from the barbecue event in the past, from the Charlie West Barbecue Fest.
- 27:48Is there a standout moment or something that that you kind of always think back
- 27:52to when you think about the event. Well, I do think the first
- 27:56one we had, which was was on Magic Island, and it's not what
- 28:02I would call a standout, but it was great. It was great weather
- 28:04on Friday night while we're setting up, but then Saturday the weather came in.
- 28:07It was forty degrees and the raining and the wind was blowing. But
- 28:12it worked out. We had great sponsors, and we continue to have great
- 28:15sponsors, and we we kept on going and so now we're in our seventh
- 28:22year. As I said earlier, it's amazing how that works out. In
- 28:25the radio business, of course, promotion is what we do. And so
- 28:27sometimes you know, you plan for months to show up at a location to
- 28:30have a big shind shin dig that you're getting ready to do, and then
- 28:34that one day there's a thunderstorm, right, there's rain or something like that
- 28:37happens, and it's amazing. It's almost like a Michael Jordan playing with the
- 28:41flu or something. It's like, despite the challenges, a lot of times
- 28:44you end up just having an amazing event. You get through the other side
- 28:47of it, it ends up being really really good. And sometimes that that's
- 28:49like a team building thing. It is, and I think, you know,
- 28:52you ask about things that stand out. I think the thing for me
- 28:56that stands out is it's a staff. It's a chance for supporters of the
- 29:00Bobber Desk Center to work together, obviously for a great cause, but then
- 29:04just the people you get to meet and talk with and talk about barbecue or
- 29:08just things in general, and working with them. It's fun. The one
- 29:12great thing about events like this in Charleston, of course, when you run
- 29:15into people. Charleston's not a very big town. You always run into people
- 29:19you know or people you know that you know, and then suddenly, before
- 29:22you know it, you have you know, two or three people standing around,
- 29:23you have something in common, and you know, conversation breaks out.
- 29:26It happens almost every single time. It seems like when somebody comes up and
- 29:30you start talking. When you go to one of these events, it's just
- 29:32a good place to go. So that's going to be the Charlie West Barbecue
- 29:34Fest that's going to be in downtown Charleston this year. It's going to be
- 29:38at Slack Plaza two to seven on Saturday. I remind folks that parking building
- 29:41right across from Slack Pause on Saturday is free. You have to go up
- 29:45to like the third level I think is where the free parking starts. But
- 29:48it's all free all the way up. So if you need somewhere to park,
- 29:49there's there. There's the street parking, all kinds of places you can
- 29:52get to there from downtown Charleston. Be aware of the bike race. Of
- 29:56course, it's going through some of the boulevard and stuff is closed off.
- 29:59You want to be aware of that. It's still plenty of access a great
- 30:00location in downtown Charleston for the Charlie West Barbecue Fest this year. It's gonna
- 30:04be a good time, I think so do. I really appreciate you,

- 34:24things that are going on in Charleston right now and in the immediate future,
- 34:30during the summer and everything else. How's the how's the bike tour going right
- 34:34now? The bike the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships. I've done some
- 34:39research on that this week, and this thing is incredible. Yeah, it's
- 34:43it's an amazing event. We've got two days in the books. We've got
- 34:45four days still to go. We crowned two, we actually crowned multiple national
- 34:52champions in the last two days, including two elite riders have qualified for the
- 34:59Paris ALM bigs here in Charleston, West Virginia. The men's Elite and women's
- 35:02Elite time trial winners yesterday were automatic qualifiers for the US Olympic team. And
- 35:08you know, that's historic both, you know, in the sense of cycling,
- 35:13but it's it's historic for Charleston. We had two Olympians selected and qualifying
- 35:17here in Charleston, West Virginia yesterday. That's that's big, that's super cool.
- 35:21I encourage anyone that's maybe making your way out to the boulevard. You
- 35:23want to watch these uh uh these uh did they call them bikers? Racers,
- 35:28cyclists, cyclists? Athletes is a good word. Yeah, Athletes are
- 35:30good too. If you want to watch them and be familiar with some stuff,
- 35:34you can go to the website for the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships.
- 35:37It's easy to find. It's a great website. They have all the
- 35:39resources you could possibly need on there, including a rule book and uh and
- 35:44history of records and different things like that. I've been looking through that this
- 35:46week. The terminology is a little challenging. You have to kind of get
- 35:50used to them. Maybe if you're more used to to cycle cycling and racing
- 35:53and stuff. Maybe you know some of that stuff. I'm not so a
- 35:55lot of it. I was learning when the go. But you learn some
- 35:58of the terminology. You can see some of the giants of the sport,
- 36:00so to speak, when you go and look at some of the records and
- 36:02some of the time records and stuff, and then you get yourself situating.
- 36:06You can watch it like a fan. And I've got a new vocabulary word
- 36:07for everyone for today and tomorrow, and that is Criterion, or as the
- 36:12cyclists refer to it, krit crit and tonight and tomorrow night is the crit
- 36:16in downtown Charleston. That is a tight one mile loop that circles the inner
- 36:22part of the city. Everything starts and finishes at the four points by Sheraton
- 36:27there at the Levy Stage. Tonight, they'll travel west up Canaw Boulevard,
- 36:32They'll turn up Court Street to Lee Street, Lee Street to Summers Summers down
- 36:37past City Center at Slock Plaza to Charier Street, where they'll turn left and
- 36:40go to Hale Street and then right back down to the boulevard. And they
- 36:45will lap that as a pack as fast as possible, over and over again
- 36:49for about forty five minutes tonight, and that's going to be super exciting.
- 36:52There's multiple heats tonight, multiple heats Tomorrow night racing starts at six point thirty.
- 36:57Places to be tonight will be at City Center. It'slock Plaza because we'll
- 37:00have a DJ. We've got the new Poda District here in Charleston, so
- 37:04you can get a beer and walk around and watch. But you also might
- 37:07want to post up on a corner, and I suggest the corners of Lee
- 37:09and Summers right there by them two brothers, the corner of Summers and Courier
- 37:14by Black Sheet Burrito, or I think the really fun one is going to
- 37:17be the corner of Courier Street and Hale Street. They're at Art Emporium and
- 37:22the Purple Moon, that sort of area right there, because that's going to
- 37:24be a really hard right turn onto a very narrow Hail Street and there's the
- 37:30possibility for a lot of let's just say action right there at that corner.
- 37:32So those are some great places to watch. Always the start finish line is
- 37:36a great place to post up as well. But those are my tips for
- 37:39tonight. It all happens after six point thirty tonight. It's going to be
- 37:43a ton of fun. Those are great tips because that is part of the
- 37:45draw of this is that when you start talking about racing through city street,
- 37:49just like in auto racing or anything else, the city becomes part of the
- 37:52feature. That's right. The city is a player in this right, the
- 37:54city is a character in this movie. And you know, the feedback we've
- 37:58gotten from USA Cycling is that, you know, first of all, city
- 38:01administration and kudos and all thanks to Mayor Goodwin and her staff, the city
- 38:07administration, all of the city departments have been super easy for them to work
- 38:09with. But they love the streets here. They love the layout. It's
- 38:13flat, it's a lot of perpendicular streets and well paved streets. There's been
- 38:17really little to no work that's needed to be done for these guys to race.
- 38:21So tonight's going to be super exciting. That's fantastic, and so I
- 38:23encourage you to check that out. I think it's a really neat thing that
- 38:27we're doing here. So you can check out the races. Who's still going
- 38:30to be going to one for the next few days and get to see some
- 38:32more of this action as it occurs in real time. Yeah, right,
- 38:36Saturday and Sunday are going to be fun as well. Those are the road
- 38:38courses. The road races rather thirteen miles through the city of Charleston, Bridge
- 38:42Road, Loudon Heights where it's Oak Ridge, Greenbriar. You know, a
- 38:45couple of really great climbs winding through the city streets, flat shots down the
- 38:50boulevard, a lot of speed, a lot of agility, a lot of
- 38:52strength and climbing. So all of the skill sets of these riders will be
- 38:58on display this weekend. Like me, and like when you used to watch
- 39:01ESPN or something, you would see a West Virginia tourism ad or something come
- 39:05on. It would make you a little excited or proud of the state or
- 39:07something like that. When I went to the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championship
- 39:10website, they speak very highly of like in setting up the situation, they
- 39:15speak very highly of Charleston. It's just as somebody, you know, we're
- 39:17like that in West Virginia. We want to kind of watch what people say
- 39:21about us. They're write up was very nice. And yesterday there was a
- 39:23great woman, a great moment, the woman who won the women's leade,
- 39:28who qualified for the Paris Olympics. In her post race interview, she talked
- 39:30about how inviting the city had been, how great it had been to be
- 39:36here, how the great experience that she's had as an athlete visiting Charleston.
- 39:39And you talk about tourism commercials, this is a six day long tourism commercial
- 39:43for Charleston and in a larger sense, the state of West Virginia. Yeah,
- 39:46I absolutely love it. As a long time resident of Charleston who came
- 39:51back, I just love what the city has done in the last ten or
- 39:53twelve years. It's been pretty amazing. Let's talk about some other stuff that's
- 39:55going on, a lot of big announcements recently Live on the Levee, the
- 40:00the acts were announced recently Regatta. I think you and Dave has already talk
- 40:01about Regatt a little bit, but still giant Regatta yet again for the city
- 40:06of Charleston this year. A lot of good things coming up. Yeah,
- 40:08certainly we're all turning our attention to those things. You've got Live on the
- 40:12Levee, which you'll kick off and I can't I won't speak at length about
- 40:15the entire schedule, but I can tell you the one night that I'm really
- 40:19looking forward to is the John Ingram's a Tribute night. Talking Heads Man,
- 40:24I'm pumped for that. You've got us so good too, man, John
- 40:28Za pro. All of the guys that he brings in are pros. If
- 40:30you're a Talking Heads fan or just a music fan, that's going to be
- 40:32a great night. We've got festival coming up, ten days of art throughout
- 40:37the city of Charleston. Obviously you talk about Regatta. You know, everybody's
- 40:43talking about the acts on the main stage, nobody, not enough people are
- 40:47talking about the incredible wrestling action at Slack Plaza. For the second year of
- 40:52the Stern Wheel, slambourree bigger and better than years past, and this year
- 40:55sponsored by Gino's Pizza. So we're looking forward to great professional wrestling and oh,
- 41:00by the way, some music up on the main stage. That's absolutely
- 41:04true. And now I have to give a shout out to my friend Adam
- 41:06Harris and the folks that helped with the slamboury down there. I went and
- 41:08watched it last year, and I was expecting good quality because I know the
- 41:14level of expectation that Adam and those guys have. What I didn't expect is
- 41:16what I saw and especially the final match that they had down there. You're
- 41:20talking hogh flying, fantastic quality when it comes to sports entertainment, professional wrestling,
- 41:24what everybody outstanding. I mean, this isn't like some rinking ding thing
- 41:29where you got people up there. I don't know what they're doing. These
- 41:30are professional athletes doing very very well. It's a labor of love. The
- 41:34guys that are involved. And you mentioned Adam Harris, and you talk about
- 41:37Bishop Baylor and Matt Sutton and a whole bunch of other guys that are involved
- 41:40in that. And you know, started planning Stern Will Slambury twenty twenty four
- 41:45right after last year's ended, and we're going to piggyback off of this year's
- 41:50market mayhem that happened a couple of months ago up at Capital Market. But
- 41:53it's a lot of fun, it's family friendly, it's a great time.
- 41:58If you saw the Perry Bennett photo of the Sternwheel Slambery from on top of
- 42:01the City Garage on Summer Street last year, I mean we estimate probably seven
- 42:06to eight thousand people and in Slack Plaza for that professional wrestling spectacle last year,
- 42:12and we're looking forward to revisiting that and making it bigger and better this
- 42:15year. What I love about all of these things is how we incorporate localities
- 42:19and names into the names of the like the WrestleMania type events, but we
- 42:22marry it into our locality and some way all love all that stuff. Yeah,
- 42:24that's right, Slambury, you know, slam Market, Stern Reel,
- 42:30Slamboury Market, Mayhem, slam Plaza. My dream is one day to do
- 42:35Bash at the ballpark over at Gomart Ballpark in partnership with the Charleston Dirty Birds.
- 42:38So that's my long term vision and dream and we're going to work to
- 42:42make it happen. But it all you know, continues at Sternwheel, Slambourrey
- 42:46twenty twenty four throughout there as well. That we actually have a professional wrestling
- 42:51show that we air over on oursis station, Charlestons Sports Radio one of six
- 42:55point seven and fourteen ninety called The Grill Out. It airs every Monday at
- 42:59one o'clock over there, and they'll be do some coverage of the Slack of
- 43:02the Slack lambree So we'll get some interviews and things like that over there,
- 43:06so we'll be able to promote that a little bit that's all. That's awesome.
- 43:08It's all about long term storytelling for us, and we'll see if Bishop
- 43:12Baylor can retain that belt. I absolutely love it. That is that's fantastic.
- 43:15Also coming up, Chef Paul's getting ready to start his his his Let's
- 43:20get cooking events at the Capitol Market again. That's coming up James Beard finalists,
- 43:24who is also providing the food for our VIP hospitality at Steptoe Plaza during
- 43:30the cycling road races on Saturday and Sunday. You know, Chef Paul is
- 43:34a he's a he's a Charleston treasurer, he's a West Virginia treasurer. He's
- 43:37he's just such a great guy to work with and you know, great for
- 43:40him. And in what city in America do you have the opportunity to go
- 43:45to your your indoor outdoor farmers market slash agritourism destination and see a James Beard
- 43:52finalist chef teaching you how to cook and it's sponsored by AARP. We can't
- 43:57forget them, gayleien Miller and the fine folks there. But you know,
- 44:00we have a James Beard chef teaching us how to cook in our own backyard.
- 44:02I mean, come on this, Charleston, the summer is just it's
- 44:06amazing, an amazing coupe. Chef fall is such a great advocate of appal
- 44:09Asian cuisine and cooking and an advocate for West Virginia. And I love that.
- 44:15I want to say we have him on our our state wide show hotline
- 44:19every Monday afternoon. And I love when he talks about going somewhere to give
- 44:23out of state where he gives presentations, cooking talks. He'll cook for somebody.
- 44:28Just recently he went out to Napa Valle cooked them ramps in California.
- 44:31He took he took West Virginia rams with He's like, I want to show
- 44:34these folks all about the ramps. That's awesome. I mean, they're they're
- 44:37they're. I mean that is about as great as an ambassador that you could
- 44:39have for the state. Just hey, West Virginia is not all this stuff
- 44:43that people have have powdered on us over the years. Look at what we
- 44:45do here, the beautiful food that we make and different things like that.
- 44:49I really like that. And I got to give a lot of credit to
- 44:51to our Commissioner of Tourism, Our Tourism Secretary rather Chelsea Ruby. She created
- 44:55a chef Ambassador program and there are several chefs involved, but Chef Paul is
- 45:00one of those because she recognized as we all recognize that, you know,
- 45:02culturally, food is a big part of the West Virginia story and people will
- 45:07travel for food. And Paul going to NAPA and doing that now that that
- 45:12for a lot of folks. That puts West Virginia on the radar and now
- 45:14we become one of their you know, one of their destinations that they want
- 45:17to visit. So you know, Paul's is a great guy, great ambassador,
- 45:21and you know, and he's a friend and I appreciate that about him
- 45:24as well. Yeah, it's all good stuff that's coming up here in Charleston.
- 45:28The chef Paul does a great job as well. Anything else you wanted
- 45:30to remind us of before we can cut you loose, you know, I'll
- 45:32just say this. You know, we've got four days of great cycling left.
- 45:35The city of Charleston has been a wonderful host thus far, and you
- 45:37know, I would just continue to say we've worked really hard to minimize any
- 45:42impacts from from road closures and detours, build a few extra minutes of time
- 45:47into your travel in the next few days. Be patient with us because we're
- 45:51doing great things in Charleston and it takes this entire community to make it happen.
- 45:54And Coop, thanks to you for giving me a few minutes to talk
- 45:58about all the great things happening in our city. Yeah, we really appreciate

- 50:00I'm with delicate Pushkin one on Mayor Williams and Glenn Elliott. They earned my
- 50:06vote in the primary and are excellent candidates, but comparing either of their memorial
- 50:10successes to Amy Goodwin is a losing angle. She appointed and covered things up
- 50:15for a line corrupt police chief of police. They have not and shouldn't be
- 50:20mentioned in the same breath. Okay, let's see from the three zero four
- 50:23three eight nine. And that's the issue. Our representatives don't represent us.
- 50:28They get in their office and represent their party, not the people. Ballot
- 50:30initiatives help the people fine tune their democracy. Let's see dell Pushkin is fear
- 50:38mongering with the DHHR budget cut law. That program has never run out of
- 50:43money. The budget continues to be cut because they are overfunded every year by
- 50:46tens of millions. The cuts are to the overfunding, not to any services
- 50:52or the payments to those services. Needs. Senator to par debunked those laws
- 50:55from Pushkin on talk line more than a month ago. I think for that
- 51:00text and let's see from the three zero, four, five, four to
- 51:02five, could someone please explain why the Dave Allen Show is not on ninety
- 51:07six five it should be, so I'll go and double check that. Certainly
