- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37We all have a purpose and we should not, we should not make a
- 0:41a mistake of putting our purpose as being the same as Our
- 0:45Calling. It is not.
- 0:47We all have a purpose. Everyone who was saved have the
- 0:50purpose. And our purpose is to glorify
- 0:53God and to worship God. That's the purpose of those of
- 0:56us who are in Christ Jesus. It's to glorify God.
- 1:01Paul's purpose is to worship and to glorify God as well, even
- 1:04though his calling was to take the gospel to the Gentiles.
- 1:10Many people go through life looking for purpose.
- 1:13Some find a sense of purpose in things like careers, family,
- 1:17college education, or other accomplishments.
- 1:20And although those may be good things to do, they are far from
- 1:23being a purpose for existence. In today's message, Pastor Lewis
- 1:28wants you to know that God created you for a purpose, and
- 1:32that purpose is to bring him glory.
- 1:35He may call you to do great things in life, but your purpose
- 1:38is to worship him in everything that you do.
- 1:41Now here's Pastor Lewis in the Book of Second Timothy, chapter
- 1:453, with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace, I'm.
- 1:49Going to ask that you would turn your Bibles, please, to the
- 1:53Second Timothy, chapter 3. And we're going to beginning at
- 1:57verse 10, we're going to go through to verse 17 today.
- 2:01And while you're doing that, I'm going to just welcome everyone
- 2:05for coming this morning. Thank you for blessing us with
- 2:08your presence. Those of you who are new to
- 2:10Calvary Chapel, if this is your first time being here, we want
- 2:14to welcome you. And we want to thank you for
- 2:16choosing to worship with us this morning.
- 2:18And we pray that your worship experience would be good and
- 2:21that you'll come back and see us again.
- 2:22Amen. And those of you who are
- 2:24listening by way of Grace FM or listening on YouTube or any
- 2:30other social media option, we thank you for your presence and
- 2:35we just welcome you with us this morning.
- 2:37And as always, we want to welcome those who are listening
- 2:42behind prison walls. We want to welcome you this
- 2:45morning and say hello to you. And we pray that the service
- 2:47would be a blessing to you as well.
- 2:50Why don't we pray and go into the word of Godfather?
- 2:54We need you. We thank you, Lord, that you did
- 2:57plead for us on Calvary. We thank you, Father, for the
- 3:01many blessings that you bestow upon us, particularly your
- 3:06blessings of salvation, redemption.
- 3:08You sanctify us by your word, the wisdom, Lord, that you give
- 3:11us through your word. We thank you Father for meeting
- 3:15every need in our lives. Lord, we thank you for the very
- 3:18breath in our in our lungs this morning.
- 3:22And Father, we need you this morning.
- 3:24Father, we desire to have a manifestation of your spirit
- 3:29this morning that you would speak to all of us, Lord, that
- 3:34we would know that we are with you, Lord.
- 3:35And when we leave here today, Lord calls us to be deeper in
- 3:39you. Cause us to be convicted, cause
- 3:42us to be encouraged, cause someone to turn their life
- 3:46towards you. Lord Father, we can only do
- 3:48these things or through the power of Your Holy Spirit.
- 3:52No one came here today to hear me.
- 3:55Father, we're all here to hear you.
- 3:57We're your people and we're gathered before you this morning
- 4:01and we're asking Lord, that you would speak to us.
- 4:04In Jesus name we pray, Amen. So we are in the second Timothy.
- 4:09We're in chapter 3 and we're going to start right there at
- 4:12verse 10. I'm going to read a few verses
- 4:15and then we'll go back and we'll make some commentary.
- 4:18It simply says, but you have carefully followed my doctrine,
- 4:22manner of life, purpose, faith, long-suffering, love,
- 4:25perseverance, persecutions, afflictions which happened to me
- 4:29at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra, what persecutions I
- 4:35endured, and out of them all the Lord delivered me.
- 4:40We can stop there for a second. And I just want to take us back
- 4:44a few verses to when we first started, just to give you a
- 4:48little background of where we're going.
- 4:50When we first opened up this particular chapter, we talked
- 4:53about the perilous times and the fact that we're in those last
- 4:57days. And in doing so, Paul's talking
- 5:00to Timothy, which is probably his last letter that he would
- 5:03ever write. And he's telling Timothy about
- 5:07the character of the men, the false teachers who will be
- 5:11around in those last days, the unbelievers who will be around
- 5:15in those last days, and how bad things will get, the depravity
- 5:19of man and how bad things will get.
- 5:21And in doing so, he focuses primarily on the fact that men
- 5:26will become lovers of themselves, which will give
- 5:31birth to a number of other negative characteristics that
- 5:35men will have. And he listed things like
- 5:38they'll be lovers of money, they'll be boasters, they'll be
- 5:40proud, they'll be blasphemers, they'll be disobedient to
- 5:43parents, unthankful, unholy. They'll be unloving, unforgiving
- 5:48slanderers. They'll be without self-control,
- 5:51brutal despisers of good. They'll be traitors.
- 5:55They'll be headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than
- 6:00lovers of God. And then he kind of summarizes
- 6:04that whole thing by saying that they will have a form of
- 6:08godliness, but denying its power.
- 6:12And then he admonished Timothy by saying from such turn away.
- 6:19So Paul's just got finished giving Timothy this list of
- 6:23traits that ungodly men, false prophets, false teachers will
- 6:28demonstrate. And, and, and we see, I can see
- 6:31some of those things in myself sometimes.
- 6:33And you may be able to see some of these things in yourself.
- 6:36And we can always ask for forgiveness.
- 6:38We can go and repent of those things and ask for forgiveness.
- 6:42And we serve a God who's willing and gracious enough to grant it.
- 6:46But then we also have men who will not ask for forgiveness
- 6:50because they are deceived. They are deceived and they're
- 6:53blinded by the things of the enemy and they will not ask for
- 6:58forgiveness. They think that they're doing
- 6:59things the right way, but they are deceived.
- 7:03So he switches from there. As he gets to verse 10, he
- 7:06switches from that and he says, but you, oh Timothy, you oh man
- 7:13of God. So we're we're seeing that
- 7:15there's a switch here. We're going from the
- 7:17characteristics that we want to stay away from the
- 7:19characteristics that mark ungodly false teachers.
- 7:24And now we're turning Paul's turning to Timothy and saying,
- 7:27but you, Timothy, it's going to be different for you because you
- 7:30have seen something different. You have witnessed something
- 7:34different. You have known something
- 7:36different, Timothy, in your lifestyle and he says, for you
- 7:40have carefully followed my doctrine or you have carefully
- 7:44examined my doctrine. You, you've examined my life.
- 7:47You have been around me to imitate the things that I've
- 7:50seen. You've examined, you know,
- 7:52whether or not I'm real or if I'm fake, you know, because you
- 7:56have been with me long enough to see these things.
- 7:59So you've seen my life, Timothy. So he gets to and he says
- 8:03you've, you've followed my doctrine.
- 8:05He's going to list about 8 things that Timothy have
- 8:08witnessed in his life. He said you have witnessed my
- 8:10doctrine, Timothy. You've seen the things that I
- 8:13teach. You've heard the things that
- 8:15I've teach. You set out to me, you know
- 8:17whether these things line up with the true Word of God.
- 8:20You know, you know that I didn't make anything up.
- 8:23You know that I didn't come up and start teaching psychology or
- 8:26philosophy. I didn't get off into the
- 8:29astrology and all these other wild things, New Age things.
- 8:32I didn't get off into all that. I stuck with the Scriptures.
- 8:36Timothy, you know that about me. You also know, Timothy, my
- 8:40manner of life, and I love the fact.
- 8:42Please don't miss this. The fact that Paul mentions his
- 8:46manner of life right after he mentions his doctrine, that is
- 8:50significant because that's the way it should be in our lives.
- 8:54The doctrine and our manner of life should go together.
- 8:58We should be, Paul is saying, I don't teach anything, Timothy,
- 9:01that I'm not living in my life or endeavoring to live in my
- 9:05life every day. And that should be us as well.
- 9:08We should not be proclaiming anything to anybody that we are
- 9:12not endeavoring to live ourselves.
- 9:14So it's, it's, it's fitting that doctrine and manner of life
- 9:18would follow one another. The manner of life, it's so
- 9:21important because it's the manner of life that actually
- 9:24gives, gives evidence to the doctrine that we're teaching.
- 9:28The power of what we're teaching is lived out in our lives.
- 9:32And that's what brings glory to God.
- 9:34That's what brings glory to God. And Paul understands that
- 9:38because the power truly worked in his life, because Paul wasn't
- 9:42always this way. In fact, he told us back in
- 9:44First Timothy chapter 1 and in verse 13 as he's given his
- 9:49testimony, Paul says although I was formerly before I've met
- 9:54Christ, before I gave my life to Christ, I was formerly A
- 9:57blasphemer. I was a persecutor and an
- 10:00insolent man. In other words, I was a violent
- 10:02man, a violent and angry man, a prideful man.
- 10:07So I wasn't always these things, but the power of God working in
- 10:11me has changed me, Timothy. And you have seen my life.
- 10:15And that's exactly what each and everyone of us probably had that
- 10:17same testimony. We can all say that at one point
- 10:20in our lives, we were a lot of things that we aren't now, thank
- 10:24God, right? A lot of things that we are not
- 10:27now. And that's good because that's
- 10:29the power of God. That's the witness of the power
- 10:31of God working in our lives. People are still looking for
- 10:36miracles. They're looking for these, the
- 10:39things that happened with Peter and the things that happened
- 10:41with Paul and the other apostles back when the church was first
- 10:45starting. How people were getting healed
- 10:47from handkerchiefs and, and how people were the miracles of
- 10:50people who were limping or was, you know, you know, they were
- 10:55paralyzed and all of a sudden they were walking and people
- 10:57coming back from the dead. We start to look for those
- 11:00things, but we see these things spiritually now in our own
- 11:02lives. We limp.
- 11:04We didn't walk or run into salvation.
- 11:06We limped into salvation. We were those who were
- 11:09paralyzed. Our lives are paralyzed and Paul
- 11:12is saying here that God has done miracles in my life and it
- 11:16changes the power of God working in my life.
- 11:19And now that's how you are able to see and witness the manner,
- 11:23my manner of life. And then he goes on into purpose
- 11:27and he gives, he starts to talk about his, his purpose.
- 11:30And we all have a purpose and we should not, we should not make
- 11:34a, a mistake of putting our purpose as being the same as Our
- 11:38Calling. It is not.
- 11:41We all have a purpose. Everyone who was saved had the
- 11:43purpose, and our purpose is to glorify God and to worship God.
- 11:48That's the purpose of those of us who are in Christ Jesus.
- 11:51It's to glorify God. Paul's purpose is to worship and
- 11:55to glorify God as well. Even though his calling was to
- 12:00take the gospel to the Gentiles, it was to take the gospel to to
- 12:04all these different nations. That was his calling, Our
- 12:08Calling maybe something different, but that was Paul's
- 12:12calling. But his purpose, His purpose was
- 12:15to worship God. One of my favorite authors is AW
- 12:18Tozer, and in The Purpose of Man, that the book he has called
- 12:23The Purpose of Man, he makes this quote.
- 12:25He says worship is a man's full reason for existence.
- 12:29Worship is why we are born, and it's why we are born again.
- 12:35And then he goes on. He talks about his own purpose
- 12:37and he says, I desire to deliver my soul as a prophet of God and
- 12:41explain from the Bible why we were created and why we are
- 12:46here. It may not satisfy the temporary
- 12:49needs at that time, but it will satisfy something bigger,
- 12:54grander and more eternal. And then he goes in to this and
- 12:58says that biblically defined purpose is this, that we might
- 13:05worship God and enjoy him forever.
- 13:09That's our purpose. And from that we all have
- 13:11different callings, but the purpose is to glorify God and
- 13:15everything that we do in life should be in worship and praise
- 13:19to God. We come on Sundays and we
- 13:22worship and thank God that we have a place that we can come
- 13:25together corporately and worship.
- 13:27Thank God we have that we can do that together.
- 13:31We encourage each other. All that is worship.
- 13:33Everything we do is worship up here.
- 13:35The the fact that we we hear the songs of worship, the fact that
- 13:38we have people working in AV they're doing it in worship.
- 13:42The people who are working with our kids and teaching them the
- 13:45word of God on their level at this age is all in worship and
- 13:50in praise to God. Clark and myself, when we stand
- 13:53at the sacred desk and we share the gospel, we share the
- 13:56scriptures, that is in worship to God.
- 13:59Listening to the Word of God and sitting under the word of God is
- 14:03in worship to God. But our worship does not stop
- 14:06there. When we get up on Monday morning
- 14:08and we say hello to our wife in the morning, it should be in
- 14:11worship to God. When we deal with our kids, it
- 14:14should be in worship to God. When we go on our jobs, it
- 14:17should be in worship to God and we're in the in the supermarket,
- 14:20we should be in worship to God. Any contact that we have with
- 14:24anybody should be an example of our worship to God, and that
- 14:29should happen seven days a week, not just on Wednesdays and on
- 14:34Sundays. And God, I pray that you would
- 14:36help us to be able to live a life that's in worship to Him.
- 14:42And that should be our prayer, you know, because we need the
- 14:45Holy Spirit to help us to do that.
- 14:46Because sometimes we don't worship God, We worship
- 14:49ourselves. We worship our thoughts and we
- 14:51worship our own feelings. And that's, we're normal,
- 14:54that's, that's being human. And that's why we need the Holy
- 14:57Spirit to help us to always be cognizant of who it is that
- 15:02we're living for, of who it is that died for us.
- 15:07So everything we should do should be in worship to him.
- 15:09In first Peter chapter 2 and verse 9, he says, but you are a
- 15:12chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, his
- 15:16own special people. I love the way that the King
- 15:19James says it. It says a peculiar people that
- 15:23you may proclaim the praises of him who called you out of
- 15:27darkness into his marvelous light.
- 15:31And again that happens through the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 15:35We do not need a neon sign to and tell anyone that we're saved
- 15:38or that we're Christians. They only should be able to see
- 15:41our lives and be able to examine our lives and they would be able
- 15:44to see our purpose and be able to see who it is that we live
- 15:48for now. The next three that he states or
- 15:51that he mentions, the next three traits that he tells Timothy
- 15:54that he has observed are things that are consistent with the
- 15:58fruit of the Spirit. He says my faith or
- 16:01faithfulness. He says my long-suffering or his
- 16:03patience and his love. Love is really significant with
- 16:07Paul. In fact, Paul wrote a whole
- 16:09chapter on it back in first first Corinthians chapter 13.
- 16:13He wrote a whole chapter on love because that's how significant
- 16:17it is to him. And he says the love bears all,
- 16:20believes all, helps all, and endures all.
- 16:23Love would be important to Paul because that's why he wrote this
- 16:26letter. He wrote this letter under the
- 16:28power of God because of his love for his son in the Spirit,
- 16:32Timothy. He wrote it because of the love
- 16:35that he had for the Church of Ephesus.
- 16:37The same thing he did when he wrote to the Church of the
- 16:40Thessalonians. Paul loved the people that he
- 16:43ministered to. In fact, he loved him so much
- 16:46that he literally put his life on the line to be able to share
- 16:51the gospel to all of these people.
- 16:53That where he started churches. He literally put his life on the
- 16:56line to do it and that was because of his love.
- 16:59Of course, he had a very good example.
- 17:01His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who did the exact same
- 17:04thing for us, put his life, it took him all the way to the
- 17:07cross because of his love for us, because of his love for us.
- 17:11And he says to us that we should deny ourselves, that we should
- 17:14not be selfish about our lives, but we should deny ourselves and
- 17:18that we should pick up our crosses or the hardships that we
- 17:21have, the things that we have to deal with on a daily basis, pick
- 17:25up those crosses, sacrifice ourselves on those crosses, die
- 17:29daily to ourselves, and that we should follow him.
- 17:33That's what he asks us to do out of love.
- 17:36So Paul does love. In fact, he loves so much that
- 17:39in Romans Chapter 9, Paul said of his brethren, he said, I wish
- 17:43that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, for my
- 17:50brother. And then at First Thessalonians
- 17:512 and 8, he says We not only imparted the gospel to you, but
- 17:56also our own lives because you became dear to us.
- 18:02So Paul understood love, and he definitely understood that it
- 18:06was necessary to have that agape love that can only come through
- 18:11the Holy Spirit in order for him to do what it is that God had
- 18:14called him to do. And that's the same for us as
- 18:17well. So Mark of a Christian, that's
- 18:19why Jesus said that. This is how you'll know that
- 18:21we're all Christians because we have love one for another.
- 18:25When people come in this house, I love the fact that people will
- 18:28say that, man, you know, you can tell that they love each other
- 18:31and they should be able to say that.
- 18:34They should be able to say that and I know that I feel love when
- 18:37I come into this house. I feel love.
- 18:40Thank God for that. He goes on and he talks about
- 18:43the perseverance, you know, being steadfast.
- 18:46Verse 11, he says the persecutions, afflictions which
- 18:49happened to me at Antioch. Paul was very clear about the
- 18:52fact that he did go through a number of persecutions and
- 18:56sufferings that he did at different places where he would
- 18:59preach the gospel. When he went to Antioch, he
- 19:02taught the gospel there. When he went into the
- 19:04synagogue's there were number of people who believed and as a
- 19:07result of that, the unbelieving Jews, they wanted to stir up the
- 19:12people, stir up the Gentiles that were there.
- 19:14And they ended up rising up in persecution against Paul and his
- 19:19companions and they had to leave.
- 19:20And they went into Iconium. And when they went to Iconium,
- 19:23the very same thing. He taught the scriptures and
- 19:26Iconium, he taught the word of God and he preached the gospel
- 19:30and there were many people who heard the gospel and they
- 19:32listened and they became, and, and they put their faith in
- 19:35Jesus Christ. And as a result of putting their
- 19:37faith in Jesus Christ, they began to gather together and,
- 19:41and, and, and, and have an assembly themselves.
- 19:44Well, the people who lived there who were not believers didn't
- 19:47like that either. So they persecuted Paul and
- 19:49wanted to stone him and ran him out of Iconium.
- 19:52And then when Paul got the Lystra, it was so bad that when
- 19:56Paul preached the gospel there and I and in Lystra, which is
- 19:58probably where Timothy heard the gospel from Paul the first time,
- 20:02we understand that it was the people from.
- 20:06Antioch that got together with the people from Iconium and all
- 20:10of them came down to Lystra, and they began to want to persecute
- 20:13Paul. That's how bad it was for Paul.
- 20:16But in every situation, he continued to put his life on the
- 20:20line to share the gospel because he believed that the one that he
- 20:25believed in was able to keep him, was able to keep him, and
- 20:30so he did what God called him to do.
- 20:34It may be sometimes where it seems hairy or seems dangerous
- 20:38for us to share the gospel or seem that it may cost us
- 20:41something if we share the gospel.
- 20:43But we have to believe that the one that we're serving is
- 20:46greater than anyone else. And He's able to keep us.
- 20:50He's able to protect us. He's able to deliver us from any
- 20:54situation that we may run into as a result of being faithful to
- 20:59him. So he gets to Lystra and there
- 21:02he is stoned. So Paul witnessed that.
- 21:04He witnessed being stoned in. And it's possibility, don't know
- 21:08for sure because the Bible never really says so, but it's a
- 21:12possibility that when he was there in Lystra and when they
- 21:15stoned him and they thought he was dead, then they took him
- 21:18outside of the city and their disciples gathered around him
- 21:22and they supposed that he was dead, That it was a possibility
- 21:25that maybe he was truly dead at that particular time.
- 21:28And maybe we don't. Again, we don't know because the
- 21:30Bible doesn't say that. But that could have been where
- 21:33he actually had the experience of the 3rd heaven during that
- 21:37particular time. He could have had that
- 21:39experience at that particular time where he went into the 3rd
- 21:42heaven and witnessed the things that he was not even able to
- 21:44talk about, but he was stoned. He was thought to be dead.
- 21:48But then he got up and again, because of his steadfastness or
- 21:52his perseverance, because of his love and because of his
- 21:56faithfulness, Paul got up and went right back into the same
- 22:00city that they had actually stoned him and continued to do
- 22:04the work that God had called him to do.
- 22:07What an example of steadfastness.
- 22:10What an example of someone who is just relentless to do what it
- 22:14is that God has called him to do.
- 22:15Lord, give me that steadfastness.
- 22:18Give me that relentlessness, that fearlessness in you,
- 22:22Father, so that I can under any circumstance, do Your will.
- 22:26And then in verse 12, Paul makes it clear to Timothy, I mean,
- 22:30this is this is not something that you probably want to put on
- 22:32your mirror or your refrigerator when you get up in the morning.
- 22:35Verse 12, yes, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will
- 22:40suffer persecution. That's probably not a good
- 22:44motivation speech for those who, you know, want to serve the
- 22:48Lord. I mean, you probably would have
- 22:51thought that Paul or, you know, will want to say something a
- 22:53little bit more encouraging, but Paul was a straight shooter and
- 22:57his attitude was I'm going to give you the truth because you
- 23:00know what? Jesus Christ gave us the truth
- 23:03when he talked about, you know, following him.
- 23:06And if you go to the 10th chapter of Matthew just for a
- 23:092nd 10th chapter of Matthew, Jesus makes a very interesting
- 23:15statement over here, Tim chapter over here in verse 16.
- 23:18He says, behold, I send you out his sheep in the midst of
- 23:21wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents
- 23:23and harmless as doves, but beware of men for they will
- 23:26deliver you up. And this is his rallying speech
- 23:29to get them to be motivated to go out and serve him.
- 23:31They're going to deliver you up to councils.
- 23:34They're going to scourge you in the synagogues.
- 23:36You will be brought before governors and and kings for my
- 23:40name's sake. And he goes on and say, You'll
- 23:42be delivered up, but don't worry, because we'll give you
- 23:45what to speak at that particular time, for it will be given to
- 23:48you in that hour what you should speak.
- 23:50For it is not you who will speak, but the spirit of your
- 23:53Father who speaks in you. This has been another
- 23:58encouraging edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 24:02Pastor Louis Harrell has shared some good reminders for us to
- 24:05learn and walk in today as he's teaching through the books of

- 24:22about solid leadership and what some of the criteria should be
- 24:27for leadership. There are specific passages
- 24:30directed toward men and women, respectively, and All in all,
- 24:34there's much to gain in coming to an awareness of God's heart
- 24:37for each person and God's purposes for each one.
