Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Annie and Samantha. No you stuff. I
- 0:07Speaker 1: never told your productive. I heard you, and today we
- 0:19Speaker 1: are bringing back an interesting one. I'll get into why
- 0:23Speaker 1: it was interesting in a minute. We have done several
- 0:27Speaker 1: episodes about The X Files on the show. I have
- 0:31Speaker 1: talked about it, even in episodes we weren't talking about
- 0:35Speaker 1: on The X Files.
- 0:36Speaker 2: They could talked about it with Bridget.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Even Yes, we've talked about it with Bridget. But there
- 0:41Speaker 1: was a specific reason you were thinking we should bring
- 0:43Speaker 1: this one back, right, Smantha.
- 0:45Speaker 2: It's true. So if you're all up in the entertainment
- 0:49Speaker 2: world news like I am, you may have heard the
- 0:53Speaker 2: news that Ryan Coogler of now Centner's award winning like
- 1:00Speaker 2: I think it's going to be historical level of cinematic features,
- 1:04Speaker 2: that he has been given the green light to do
- 1:07Speaker 2: a reboot of The X Files. I'm very excited about
- 1:11Speaker 2: this take, which is really funny because I did not
- 1:14Speaker 2: watch The X Files. I was not a fan. But
- 1:18Speaker 2: according to this news, not only has he started this project,
- 1:22Speaker 2: but Jillian Anderson has also given her stap of approval,
- 1:27Speaker 2: as she actually talked about I believe she's read the
- 1:29Speaker 2: pilot and is very excited about it, and I think
- 1:32Speaker 2: they've already cast a lead for it as well, so
- 1:36Speaker 2: obviously people are excited.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Yes, I mean me included. I've talked about it before,
- 1:47Speaker 1: I'll talk about it in this episode. I love The
- 1:49Speaker 1: X Files. I do think it had a resurgence recently
- 1:53Speaker 1: where people discovered it, rediscovered it on streaming services because
- 1:58Speaker 1: it came out in nineteen one around there, and it's
- 2:03Speaker 1: had a couple of movies and stuff as well. But yeah,
- 2:06Speaker 1: as I've said many times, it was my one of
- 2:08Speaker 1: my gay awakenings.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Because I had a.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Lot of people.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Many were like, oh, oh that makes now I know.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Yes, exactly, now I know. I like Mulder and I
- 2:22Speaker 1: like Scully. This was also a big start of internet
- 2:26Speaker 1: fan fiction, so I salute the show for that. But yes,
- 2:31Speaker 1: the reason I said this was interesting this episode is
- 2:35Speaker 1: because Lauren and I Samantha couldn't go on this work
- 2:40Speaker 1: trip to Las Vegas. It was her birthday and she
- 2:44Speaker 1: had plans. I kind of personally think you didn't want
- 2:48Speaker 1: to go.
- 2:48Speaker 2: But originally I was like, yeah, I'm down, and then
- 2:51Speaker 2: when I heard about after, I was like, I'm good
- 2:52Speaker 2: with it, y'all. I'm glad y'all had fun.
- 2:56Speaker 1: We did have fun, We did, but it was a
- 2:57Speaker 1: it was a chaotic time and Lauren very graciously stepped
- 3:02Speaker 1: in to be a co host on this episode when
- 3:07Speaker 1: Samantha was not there. But we were recording from a
- 3:11Speaker 1: small glass box outside of a huge stadium wherein bands
- 3:19Speaker 1: like the Foo Fighters were playing and just you could
- 3:24Speaker 1: really hear it. And the point of the Cube was
- 3:32Speaker 1: that we were recording an episode that people could stop
- 3:37Speaker 1: by and put on soundproof headphones and listen to whatever
- 3:42Speaker 1: we were saying as we were recording it. So just
- 3:46Speaker 1: so you know, even if you hear like snippets of
- 3:49Speaker 1: bands in the background, the point wasn't this cube was soundproof.
- 3:53Speaker 1: The point was the headphones were. But Lauren and I
- 3:58Speaker 1: workshopped a lot of before we did this, and she
- 4:02Speaker 1: is a huge X Files fan, and so I'm pretty
- 4:05Speaker 1: sure that's how we landed where we landed, which is perfect. Yes, absolutely,
- 4:11Speaker 1: and it was. It was a wild time, listeners, but
- 4:15Speaker 1: it was a very fun episode, so please enjoy. Hey,
- 4:24Speaker 1: this is Annie and welcome to Stefan. Never told your
- 4:26Speaker 1: production of iHeartRadio, and today we have a very special
- 4:40Speaker 1: recording for you for a couple of reasons. First off,
- 4:44Speaker 1: Samantha is away. I'm going to talk about it more
- 4:47Speaker 1: in a second, but she is on a birthday trip.
- 4:50Speaker 1: She is better from COVID, but she's on a birthday trip.
- 4:53Speaker 1: But that means that my good friend Lauren and coworker Lauren,
- 4:58Speaker 1: who is on the same a podcast with me, is
- 5:02Speaker 1: filling in on what is quite an interesting experience we're
- 5:06Speaker 1: having right now. We'll talk about it in a second,
- 5:09Speaker 1: but welcome Lauren to Sminty.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Oh, thank you, yes, hi, Hello.
- 5:14Speaker 4: I am so glad to be here in this bizarre
- 5:17Speaker 4: circumstance with you.
- 5:20Speaker 1: You you stepped up because we got asked to go
- 5:26Speaker 1: on this work trip to Las Vegas where we are
- 5:34Speaker 1: recording live from the iHeart Podcast studio powered by Bows
- 5:39Speaker 1: at the House of Music at the iHeartRadio Music Festival.
- 5:42Speaker 1: And it's like a booth in the middle of a
- 5:46Speaker 1: music festival. Yeah.
- 5:47Speaker 3: So yeah, and we have.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Like this cool just just just plexiglass door so it
- 5:52Speaker 4: feels like an action figure box. It does so pass
- 5:55Speaker 4: away can just kind of like stare at us and
- 5:57Speaker 4: take pictures. Yeah, which makes me as a podcaster who
- 6:02Speaker 4: does this in my house with my cat. Yeah, very comfortable.
- 6:06Speaker 4: This is completely natural, right.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Very natural. I mean, yeah, I'm looking out right now
- 6:15Speaker 1: and trying not to think too much about it. But
- 6:21Speaker 1: we are very excited to have you. Thank you so
- 6:23Speaker 1: much for volunteering to talk about this. And we're gonna
- 6:27Speaker 1: have fun. We're gonna have fun.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Oh, we certainly are. If it had been any other topic,
- 6:31Speaker 4: I might have been like, you.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Know, you do that one fire sol But yeah, So
- 6:40Speaker 1: we're here for the iHeart Music Festival and we've had
- 6:44Speaker 1: a good time. We've had a cat yeah, but it's
- 6:46Speaker 1: been a whirlwind. And yes, Samantha is away. Her birthday
- 6:50Speaker 1: is September twenty sixth, which happens to be the last
- 6:54Speaker 1: of us day. She always makes fun of me when
- 6:55Speaker 1: I point that out. But that got me thinking, like,
- 6:59Speaker 1: what could we talk about that would be in that
- 7:02Speaker 1: kind of horror realm?
- 7:04Speaker 4: All right?
- 7:05Speaker 1: You know I don't need an excuse to talk about
- 7:07Speaker 1: stuff like that, zero percent, right, But I was like,
- 7:11Speaker 1: what could it be? And then I was thinking, what
- 7:13Speaker 1: could it be that would fit with you and it
- 7:15Speaker 1: wouldn't be too much research? And then I realized the
- 7:20Speaker 1: thirtieth anniversary of the X Files.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Oh, which makes me feel very old but in a
- 7:26Speaker 4: really fun way.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Yes, well, I'm glad for that. And so I was
- 7:34Speaker 1: just like, I feel the X Files and we're going
- 7:38Speaker 1: to talk about this has come up in so many
- 7:40Speaker 1: of our episodes when that wasn't the topic, that wasn't
- 7:45Speaker 1: the case that was really looking into, because.
- 7:47Speaker 4: You've done a couple on purpose, like you did one
- 7:50Speaker 4: about Scully like in general as like a fictional lady human,
- 7:56Speaker 4: and then you did one with Bridget about yeah, the
- 8:00Speaker 4: Skully effects of.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Science expect Yeah, yes, and we will talk about that
- 8:05Speaker 1: a little bit. But it just kept coming up, and
- 8:08Speaker 1: I was so intrigued by that. I was so interested
- 8:12Speaker 1: in why it is that I'm looking into the history
- 8:14Speaker 1: of shipping and I'm learning about X files, or I'm
- 8:18Speaker 1: looking into the history of fan fiction and I'm learning
- 8:21Speaker 1: about x files.
- 8:23Speaker 4: And as your listeners probably know, you're not talking about
- 8:25Speaker 4: like ground to air shipping, like you're talking about like
- 8:28Speaker 4: fan fiction shipping.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Yeah, But hilariously enough, Samantha did think that's what we
- 8:32Speaker 1: were talking about, the shipping. So Samantha, I love you.
- 8:37Speaker 3: That's amazing, that's so cool.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Oh geez, She was like, what are we talking about ground?
- 8:44Speaker 1: Like no, honey, No, So I thought it would just
- 8:51Speaker 1: be fun when we're here in Las Vegas, we're in
- 8:54Speaker 1: this very interesting setup if we could have a conversation
- 8:59Speaker 1: about both how this show impacted the Internet, because, as
- 9:03Speaker 1: I've said a million times, I'll say it again in
- 9:07Speaker 1: this probably when we're talking about fan fiction, when we're
- 9:09Speaker 1: talking about fans spaces, a lot of that is women,
- 9:13Speaker 1: non binary people, yeah, queer people. So I think it
- 9:17Speaker 1: is if anyone's like, why is this on a feminist show?
- 9:20Speaker 1: I think that that is enough to be worth talking about. Yeah,
- 9:26Speaker 1: but also the impact of Skully specifically. But I just
- 9:30Speaker 1: think it would be fun for you and me who
- 9:34Speaker 1: liked the show but have different perspectives, to discuss this
- 9:41Speaker 1: thirtieth anniversary.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Yeah, that's fine, I'm fine with that.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Yeah, excellent, excellent. Also, Samantha made it very clear that
- 9:54Speaker 1: we have a book that we're trying to sell. Oh yeah,
- 9:57Speaker 1: stuff Love Never Told You book, And there is a
- 10:01Speaker 1: bunch of stuff about Scully in there.
- 10:03Speaker 4: So oh heck, yeah, okay, yeah, yes, yeah, okay.
- 10:07Speaker 1: But all right, let's just I feel like, sometimes do
- 10:12Speaker 1: you ever feel this way, Lauren, where you know something
- 10:14Speaker 1: so well you feel like you don't have to explain
- 10:16Speaker 1: it absolutely, but you're not sure if maybe no one
- 10:20Speaker 1: else knows what you're talking about.
- 10:22Speaker 4: I yes, I feel that exact way about the X Files, Okay,
- 10:26Speaker 4: and so I kind of try to. I feel like
- 10:28Speaker 4: I overcompensate by overexplaining it. Actually, yes, yeah, yes, I
- 10:33Speaker 4: am in the same boat. But so that being said,
- 10:37Speaker 4: I am not going to give a big.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Explainer of the X Files. That would take way too long,
- 10:43Speaker 1: and that's not really what this is about. But I
- 10:44Speaker 1: will tell you a brief summary.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Great, short, perfect.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Yeah, let's ground ourselves in reality before we go completely bonkers.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Love it.
- 10:52Speaker 1: The truth is out there. The X Files is a
- 10:56Speaker 1: sci fi paranormal television show that debuted in nineteen ninety three,
- 11:01Speaker 1: and it follows the believer Fox Molder played by David
- 11:06Speaker 1: Duchovney and the skeptic Danas Scully played by Gillian Anderson,
- 11:11Speaker 1: their FBI agents that are assigned to the X Files,
- 11:15Speaker 1: which is sort of a catch all for weird, paranormal
- 11:19Speaker 1: and strange cases that pretty much know when else what
- 11:22Speaker 1: Molder wants to work on. Would you add anything to
- 11:25Speaker 1: that description.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:27Speaker 4: His nickname around the FBI campus is Spooky fu spooky Molder.
- 11:34Speaker 4: So that pretty much tells you what you need to know.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Yeah, and he's like in a basement, like in the dark.
- 11:39Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, it used to be the copy room.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Yes and yeah, and then Scully gets called Dana. Scully
- 11:48Speaker 4: gets called in to basically like tattle on him.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Right, that's how it starts. She's supposed to be the
- 11:55Speaker 1: one that's.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Like, yeah, and she is a skeptic.
- 12:00Speaker 1: She is, she is. And again, if this was a
- 12:02Speaker 1: different episode, we could talk about she has doesn't she have?
- 12:06Speaker 1: She wears she wears a cross? Yeah, and there's a
- 12:09Speaker 1: whole arc examining absolutely her faith. Yeah. Yeah. But when
- 12:15Speaker 1: this came out, I read a lot of articles that
- 12:19Speaker 1: were like, it was not set up to be successful.
- 12:22Speaker 1: It was it was coming out of Friday Nights, I believe,
- 12:25Speaker 1: which is sort of known as the death Sway. Yeah.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Yeah. Even the creator Chris Carter definitely didn't think it
- 12:31Speaker 4: was going to get more than one season. He was
- 12:33Speaker 4: epically unprepared for that happening and was kind of like scrambling.
- 12:38Speaker 4: He was like, oh more, really, I wasn't This plot
- 12:43Speaker 4: arc doesn't make any sense really.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Okay, sure Wolf.
- 12:49Speaker 4: So if you've ever thought that the mythwark. If you
- 12:50Speaker 4: if you're a watcher of The X Files and you've
- 12:52Speaker 4: ever thought that the mythark is very silly, that's that's
- 12:56Speaker 4: maybe the reason why.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean, what if fascinating mindset to be
- 13:01Speaker 1: like this is definitely gonna fail. Oh whoa, oh no,
- 13:04Speaker 1: what do I do now? But one of the interesting
- 13:18Speaker 1: things the Xiles came out during third wave feminism, and
- 13:23Speaker 1: it was very there was a lot of stuff happening, yeah,
- 13:26Speaker 1: in this sphere. And one of the interesting things about Scully,
- 13:32Speaker 1: who we're going to talk about a lot in this,
- 13:34Speaker 1: is that she was the skeptic. She was playing against
- 13:38Speaker 1: kind of stereotypical gender type.
- 13:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:40Speaker 1: And according to Chris Carter, who was the creator of
- 13:43Speaker 1: the series, he was like immediately he wanted to cast her,
- 13:47Speaker 1: but the network was like, they want they wanted a bombshell,
- 13:51Speaker 1: and apparently they wanted Pamela Anderson.
- 13:54Speaker 3: I love this.
- 13:54Speaker 4: I love this alternate universe in which that happened. No,
- 13:59Speaker 4: I mean, okay, first of all, I am personally offended
- 14:01Speaker 4: that anyone would say that Gillian Anderson is not a bombshell, right,
- 14:06Speaker 4: she is a beautiful lady.
- 14:08Speaker 3: There's that episode.
- 14:09Speaker 4: There's an image that lives in my mind permanently, and
- 14:12Speaker 4: thank thanks the universe for it for living there is
- 14:16Speaker 4: that the moment in an episode of Hannibal season three
- 14:19Speaker 4: when she is swaning through an Italian palazo and she
- 14:24Speaker 4: is just a divine creature, just absolutely hecking gorgeous, and
- 14:28Speaker 4: I'm just like, so.
- 14:29Speaker 3: So a.
- 14:32Speaker 4: But b yeah, what a gift that the network was
- 14:36Speaker 4: that wrong and the Chris Carter fought back.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Also, Carter said he didn't want romance between Molder and Scully.
- 14:48Speaker 1: We are going to be talking about that a lot.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it didn't turn out that way, I guess, but.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Uh no, And so this is one of the interesting
- 14:55Speaker 1: things and we're about to get into this. I have
- 14:57Speaker 1: seen all the X Files, if you've listened to the
- 14:59Speaker 1: other episodes we've done of the X Files, though my
- 15:02Speaker 1: memory is not great. Lauren is here to help me.
- 15:07Speaker 3: A little bit.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Yeah. Well okay, so so I've I haven't watched past
- 15:11Speaker 4: season six with any regularity. There there are there are
- 15:14Speaker 4: what nine original seasons, and then they came back and
- 15:18Speaker 4: did two shorter ones ten eleven, like twenty years later.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Yeah. Two movies.
- 15:24Speaker 4: Two movies I saw the first movie. I don't think
- 15:26Speaker 4: I ever bothered seeing the second one. So up through
- 15:30Speaker 4: season like six, I have a near like photographic memory
- 15:35Speaker 4: because I watched these episodes over and over and over
- 15:40Speaker 4: and over and over again, hm in a way that
- 15:44Speaker 4: only like an eleven year old with no job can do.
- 15:51Speaker 4: There's nothing but like a VHS and nothing else going on,
- 15:55Speaker 4: So yeah.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Interesting, did you record them? Oh?
- 15:59Speaker 3: Yes I did? Okay, yes, I heck and did.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Okay, Well, I'm gonna pick your brain about this in
- 16:07Speaker 1: the second Okay, yes, I would love to talk about that.
- 16:11Speaker 1: But yes, there was this whole idea of Scully being
- 16:17Speaker 1: kind of the more logical skeptical one, which was nearly.
- 16:20Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, and and her being right, like her being
- 16:22Speaker 4: the scientist like Molder is kind of the like impassioned
- 16:26Speaker 4: creative ideas guy, and she's the one going like really Molder,
- 16:29Speaker 4: but yeah, like she's the one constantly having to to
- 16:32Speaker 4: like check him and like be like could we bring
- 16:35Speaker 4: logic to this conversation literally at all, and him usually
- 16:38Speaker 4: going we you know, but but yeah, because like Molder
- 16:42Speaker 4: is an absolute mess, like and this is known from
- 16:46Speaker 4: like the first episodes, like he is just Zany is
- 16:50Speaker 4: putting it kindly and like he definitely I think within
- 16:56Speaker 4: the first season he's like observed to have a little
- 17:00Speaker 4: bit of a like poor an addiction. What yeah, Yeah,
- 17:05Speaker 4: he's like calling sex lines like his yeah, like he
- 17:09Speaker 4: is completely incapable of having a relationship with a real
- 17:13Speaker 4: human woman. He's frequently through these episodes the damsel in
- 17:17Speaker 4: distress that Scully has to come save. Uh, and like
- 17:21Speaker 4: Scully has her heck in life together like like she is.
- 17:24Speaker 3: I mean until she meets Molder and then she kind
- 17:28Speaker 3: of gets Drek.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Is Molder?
- 17:29Speaker 3: Is Molder a manic pixie dream boy?
- 17:32Speaker 1: Oh oh, okay that that warn'ts some thoughts? Uh? Now,
- 17:45Speaker 1: something else you said, because you when I gave you
- 17:49Speaker 1: this assignment, if you kindly stepped up. You have been
- 17:53Speaker 1: rewatching some old episodes I have.
- 17:57Speaker 4: I've been watching like all of my favorite like he's
- 18:00Speaker 4: in one through season three episodes this week and it's
- 18:04Speaker 4: it's honestly holds up. It's okay, I'm biased, Like I
- 18:07Speaker 4: have no I have no way to be unbiased about
- 18:10Speaker 4: this show because I loved it so hard and so
- 18:13Speaker 4: much when I was a tiny child, like it like
- 18:15Speaker 4: a teenager, which is the same thing. No offense to
- 18:18Speaker 4: any teenagers out there right now. I was certainly a
- 18:21Speaker 4: tiny child during that time. But but yeah, I feel
- 18:24Speaker 4: like it holds up. I feel like it really like
- 18:26Speaker 4: the writing is sharp. David Pevney and gillianators And are
- 18:31Speaker 4: both doing a bang up job. All of the random
- 18:34Speaker 4: side characters are doing interesting things, like they're making interesting
- 18:37Speaker 4: choices and and some of the like, yeah, like I
- 18:41Speaker 4: was picking and choosing episodes very carefully, Okay, my favorite
- 18:47Speaker 4: My favorite are four that were written by this one writer,
- 18:50Speaker 4: Darren Morgan. He's the little brother of Glenn Morgan, who's
- 18:53Speaker 4: one of the director producers of the series. And from
- 18:56Speaker 4: the beginning, he was like, please let me write for
- 18:58Speaker 4: this show. This seems so cool, it's right up my a.
- 19:00Speaker 4: And Glenn was like, nah, but if you want to
- 19:04Speaker 4: get in this rubber Flukeman costumes and sit in a
- 19:07Speaker 4: pool for ten hours to film the Flukeman episode, then.
- 19:12Speaker 3: You can do that. And he said yes.
- 19:17Speaker 4: And then and then either later later in the first
- 19:20Speaker 4: season or maybe in the beginning of the second season,
- 19:22Speaker 4: he's got to start writing. And he wrote my four
- 19:24Speaker 4: favorite episodes, which are humbug hosehns from outer Space, Wore
- 19:32Speaker 4: of the Coffer Phages and Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose. Oh
- 19:39Speaker 4: great titles, right, Yeah, and they're like they're like the
- 19:42Speaker 4: funny episodes, like they're they're definitely making fun of the
- 19:46Speaker 4: tropes that X Files has already set up, right and
- 19:50Speaker 4: and like really playing with like how silly and funny
- 19:53Speaker 4: these situations can be.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Yeah, And that was another thing you pointed out, was
- 19:59Speaker 1: that this is a if you haven't seen it, and
- 20:02Speaker 1: I'm always interested when people discover things late or they're
- 20:06Speaker 1: younger and they discover it after it's long been off
- 20:09Speaker 1: the air, that it's a genre show where like you
- 20:12Speaker 1: get all kinds of things in it. Oh yeah, it's
- 20:16Speaker 1: like one is very scary, one is funny, one is
- 20:20Speaker 1: a cops like sad time.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's not I mean like right, like like
- 20:26Speaker 4: there's usually some kind of supernatural paranormal kind of kind
- 20:30Speaker 4: of element to it, but other than that, they're really
- 20:32Speaker 4: allowed to be either dramatic or funny or right or
- 20:36Speaker 4: horrifying or horrifying in different ways. Like you might go
- 20:39Speaker 4: body horror one episode and then have a totally different
- 20:42Speaker 4: like jump scare kind of horror in another one, and
- 20:44Speaker 4: it's just like what they're up to. And I love
- 20:47Speaker 4: the idea of that writer's room being so open and
- 20:49Speaker 4: so free to be able to do that, and I
- 20:50Speaker 4: think that's part of why it was such a good show.
- 20:53Speaker 1: It was and it resonated with a lot of people,
- 20:55Speaker 1: and we're going to talk about that, and it resonated
- 20:58Speaker 1: with meeting Lauren. So I thought we would go into
- 21:01Speaker 1: sort of our personal experiences here.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Okay, y yep, yep.
- 21:06Speaker 1: So yes. As I've discussed before several times, I have
- 21:11Speaker 1: a very bad track record of not listening to my
- 21:16Speaker 1: parents when they would tell me not to watch something,
- 21:19Speaker 1: and then it turns out they were right. I probably
- 21:21Speaker 1: shouldn't have watched something.
- 21:22Speaker 3: Uh huh, they knew you.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Yeah, they were like, yeah, you just shouldn't do that.
- 21:28Speaker 1: So I had been told I shouldn't watch it, I
- 21:31Speaker 1: really wanted to watch it, and I snuck in and
- 21:35Speaker 1: watched it, and I would like watch it. I would
- 21:39Speaker 1: time it because it would come on there would be
- 21:40Speaker 1: reruns on Sundays at like three am, and I would
- 21:43Speaker 1: like play it really low when I get close to
- 21:46Speaker 1: the TV. And yeah, they found out because I started
- 21:48Speaker 1: having nightmares and they're like, what where is this coming from?
- 21:51Speaker 1: And I was like like, oh, how did you hear
- 21:56Speaker 1: of Killer B? I was like the news terrible liar
- 22:02Speaker 1: of a terrible liar. Wow, there is a killer Yeah.
- 22:09Speaker 1: So I was banned for a while, but eventually the
- 22:13Speaker 1: band was lifted and I was allowed to watch again.
- 22:16Speaker 1: And I would watch it with my friend over the phone.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, totally, totally in the day of like
- 22:21Speaker 4: corded phone.
- 22:22Speaker 3: Yeah, like yeah, yep, and.
- 22:24Speaker 1: We would cheat. Her satellite connection was a little bit
- 22:27Speaker 1: better than mine, and she I would hear her gasp
- 22:32Speaker 1: and I'd be like what And then a second I'd
- 22:34Speaker 1: be like, oh, well, it was so fun. Yeah. And
- 22:39Speaker 1: this is also I've told the story a million times.
- 22:42Speaker 1: I didn't have the language for it at the time,
- 22:43Speaker 1: but this is when I realized probably gay, oh.
- 22:47Speaker 4: Yeah, a little bit, a little bit. Yeah, yeah, that
- 22:51Speaker 4: wasn't I didn't realize certainly at the time, right right,
- 22:54Speaker 4: Like I was eleven, it was nineteen ninety three. I
- 22:57Speaker 4: didn't have the linguistics for this yet. But in college
- 23:02Speaker 4: when I realized I'm by, I was like, oh, Molder
- 23:07Speaker 4: and Scully, of course, why didn't I see this before.
- 23:13Speaker 4: It's like in retrospect, I'm like, duh, like what like
- 23:16Speaker 4: But but that was like the one example that I
- 23:21Speaker 4: would like people would be like what really, like like
- 23:23Speaker 4: what I had kind of like my coming out to
- 23:24Speaker 4: my friends. I think this is actually the first time
- 23:26Speaker 4: I've ever come out on a podcast. So welcome, welcome
- 23:29Speaker 4: to welcome.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 23:32Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, but right, like like I like, people would
- 23:35Speaker 4: be like, what are you talking about? And I would
- 23:36Speaker 4: be like Molder and Scully, right, yeah, yeah, and it
- 23:40Speaker 4: would be like really, I'm like, yeah, I don't know, man,
- 23:44Speaker 4: how I feel.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it was I just remember because I think I
- 23:50Speaker 1: was in seventh grade when I realized and I was
- 23:53Speaker 1: just watching it, and again I didn't have the language.
- 23:56Speaker 1: I was just like, I have an interest here something.
- 24:03Speaker 1: I feel the same way about these two characters.
- 24:09Speaker 3: And we're not alone.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Because that there is essay. There are essays you can
- 24:14Speaker 1: find about how quote Jillian Anderson Danis Scully made me
- 24:20Speaker 1: gay From the nineties, She's jaking jokingly referred to as
- 24:25Speaker 1: the Gateway lesbian of choice.
- 24:29Speaker 3: She's a good one.
- 24:30Speaker 4: Come on, yeah, in those pantsuits, let's go.
- 24:34Speaker 3: I know she made them look very sharp.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Oh she did. I have a whole theory about this,
- 24:39Speaker 1: and we can't get into it, but I feel like
- 24:41Speaker 1: it's sort of the when people are not conforming to
- 24:45Speaker 1: their stereotypical genders, where people are like like, wait a minute, interesting, Yeah, yeah, yes,
- 24:54Speaker 1: but that was my experience, what about you, Laura?
- 24:56Speaker 4: So right, So so this show started coming out when
- 24:59Speaker 4: I was eleven, and I was immediately hooked. My dad
- 25:02Speaker 4: didn't want my dad didn't like spooky things, so he
- 25:06Speaker 4: never wanted to be watching it, Like I couldn't watch
- 25:08Speaker 4: it with him in the room. But which is part
- 25:10Speaker 4: of why I started videotaping it. But but yeah, but
- 25:13Speaker 4: I was.
- 25:14Speaker 1: It was.
- 25:14Speaker 4: He was totally like, yeah, do whatever you want, kid,
- 25:18Speaker 4: But no, I was. I was obsessed. I was very obsessed.
- 25:22Speaker 4: I was like it it was sort of my whole
- 25:25Speaker 4: personality for a while, like that level, and it.
- 25:30Speaker 3: Was very intense.
- 25:31Speaker 4: It was an intense love but like like to like
- 25:35Speaker 4: to the point that I definitely I was. I was
- 25:39Speaker 4: on the yearbook staff, if that wasn't already clear to anybody, uh.
- 25:43Speaker 1: And.
- 25:46Speaker 4: Because I was on the yearbook staff, we could have
- 25:48Speaker 4: basically whatever we wanted printed on the front of the
- 25:50Speaker 4: book instead of our name. And I defin my my height.
- 25:54Speaker 4: My senior year yearbook definitely, says Lauren to Coveney.
- 26:00Speaker 3: On the cover.
- 26:00Speaker 1: Wow, I'm so happy to have learned this.
- 26:04Speaker 4: I am very embarrassed. But it's okay. It's just okay,
- 26:09Speaker 4: it's okay. That's fine.
- 26:11Speaker 1: You know about my first email Nils Angel come on?
- 26:15Speaker 1: So I love Neo from the Matrix. It's all right.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Also Neo and Trinity come on.
- 26:21Speaker 1: It's right there. Oh gosh, you're so right.
- 26:28Speaker 3: Anyway, yeah, yeah, so so right.
- 26:30Speaker 4: So I kind of fell off watching around season six
- 26:33Speaker 4: to seven. I think partially because like I went to
- 26:36Speaker 4: school and I didn't have a TV access really anymore,
- 26:39Speaker 4: but partially because like the show was going through these changes,
- 26:42Speaker 4: like the first movie had come out between seasons five
- 26:44Speaker 4: and six, and David Coveney had the show moved to
- 26:48Speaker 4: la they had been previously filming in Vancouver, and just
- 26:51Speaker 4: the whole palette of the show change, and like a
- 26:54Speaker 4: lot of the crew was different, like I don't know,
- 26:56Speaker 4: the feel was different, and then yeah, the Coveny took
- 27:00Speaker 4: time off and they had different characters in there, and
- 27:02Speaker 4: I was like, I don't care about this, which is
- 27:06Speaker 4: sad or I mean it certainly was at the time,
- 27:09Speaker 4: like it kind of broke my heart.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Yeah, when you love something so much and then it's
- 27:16Speaker 1: just it either because you don't like the how it's
- 27:19Speaker 1: going anymore, it's just move on. It's sad, I hear you.
- 27:22Speaker 1: I watched all of it. I was definitely sad when
- 27:27Speaker 1: David Ducopany left.
- 27:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I love Robert Patrick, who played agent Doggett,
- 27:32Speaker 4: who stepped in as a skeptic to Scully's believer.
- 27:35Speaker 5: Yeah, interestingly, Yes, Oh my gosh, I did want to.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Tick your brain about some plot point stuff because oh gosh, Okay,
- 27:56Speaker 1: just a couple of specific things, because, like I said,
- 27:59Speaker 1: you have been watching stuff, and I my memory, even
- 28:03Speaker 1: though I've watched it all, I have very specific, clear
- 28:06Speaker 1: memories of certain things and nothing else. Sure. Yeah, but
- 28:10Speaker 1: one of the big things I do remember is the
- 28:13Speaker 1: pregnancy arc with Scully, and you know, there was like
- 28:17Speaker 1: kind of a real life thing going on as well.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, So what happened with this was in season five,
- 28:24Speaker 4: it's revealed that Scully had had a baby while she
- 28:28Speaker 4: was alien abducted. Back in season two during the episodes
- 28:34Speaker 4: Dwayne Berry and Ascension, which are two of the episodes
- 28:36Speaker 4: that I just watched. Oh gosh, research this is like
- 28:43Speaker 4: extra nerdy for me.
- 28:45Speaker 1: I love it. You're in a good place.
- 28:48Speaker 4: But but right, the whole abduction thing was written in
- 28:53Speaker 4: because Jillian Anderson was pregnant in real life and she
- 28:57Speaker 4: had to go have a baby. In the episode leading
- 29:00Speaker 4: up to this, like her coats keep getting bigger, and
- 29:02Speaker 4: like her costumes keep getting Billowyer.
- 29:04Speaker 3: And like yeah, and then and then she had she
- 29:08Speaker 3: she goes, she has the baby.
- 29:10Speaker 4: She's off the show for like maybe like one episode,
- 29:12Speaker 4: and then she comes back and you know, the plot
- 29:16Speaker 4: of this is that she's coming back from being from
- 29:19Speaker 4: having disappeared for a period of time, and she's like
- 29:23Speaker 4: lying in a hospital and I swear to heck, they
- 29:25Speaker 4: must have like built up her boobs to like hide
- 29:28Speaker 4: the pregnancy stomach, like and because because she's a slight
- 29:32Speaker 4: little lady, yeah, and those booms are huge. I mean
- 29:36Speaker 4: it could be it could be her milk could come in.
- 29:37Speaker 3: I'm not sure.
- 29:38Speaker 4: I wasn't there, but it definitely looked hilarious. Okay, anyway,
- 29:45Speaker 4: uh yeah, so so so right, so they bring in
- 29:48Speaker 4: this this this plot arc in season five. It turns
- 29:51Speaker 4: out that the baby had been adopted out, and then
- 29:53Speaker 4: I think the child died.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Shortly after that.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Scully is at the time pronounced infertile, but then definitely
- 30:01Speaker 4: has a baby in season eight, some kind of like
- 30:04Speaker 4: miracle baby that I guess has psychic powers.
- 30:06Speaker 3: I didn't watch that part. I don't know.
- 30:07Speaker 1: I guess it's I guess it's Moulder's child. I thought
- 30:10Speaker 1: it was, but then I thought it was an alien chap.
- 30:13Speaker 1: Maybe it's all.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Maybe it's both.
- 30:15Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I don't know. Yeah, she has that smallpox
- 30:19Speaker 4: be alien thing going on, so she could have weird
- 30:23Speaker 4: DNA in there.
- 30:23Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 30:24Speaker 3: I don't know her life.
- 30:25Speaker 1: That's true. I actually am fascinated, and I want to
- 30:31Speaker 1: come back to at some point the depiction of pregnancy
- 30:34Speaker 1: and horror.
- 30:36Speaker 4: Yes, yes, yes, I love this. I love this. I
- 30:40Speaker 4: will come back and talk about this literally anytime. I
- 30:43Speaker 4: love so much that like the one admittance that we
- 30:46Speaker 4: get from dudes in Hollywood that being female might suck,
- 30:53Speaker 4: is all of these horror pregnancy troops.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Yes, yes, anyway, in every horror you're like, oh pregnant,
- 31:01Speaker 1: oh no, oh no.
- 31:03Speaker 4: Or when like a dude is pregnant in whatever way,
- 31:06Speaker 4: like an alien or something like that.
- 31:08Speaker 3: How completely horrifying.
- 31:10Speaker 1: It's it's horrifying, yes, exactly, exactly, well another day. Yeah,
- 31:17Speaker 1: but something else you mentioned that I didn't pick up
- 31:21Speaker 1: on when I was watching this is how Scully is
- 31:24Speaker 1: kind of depicted as a foil. There's other women that yeah.
- 31:30Speaker 4: Yeah, so okay, so so like the principal cast of
- 31:33Speaker 4: the show is really like Scully and a bunch of dudes.
- 31:36Speaker 4: It's basically all dudes and Scully. But like, like there's
- 31:41Speaker 4: there's lady characters in like episode to episode, and and
- 31:44Speaker 4: I remember them all being you know, if anyone has
- 31:47Speaker 4: watched more of it more more recently than me, like
- 31:50Speaker 4: check me if I'm wrong, but I remember them always
- 31:51Speaker 4: being written as like people like imagine that like whoa,
- 31:55Speaker 4: I know, right, you know, like occasionally episodes would be
- 31:59Speaker 4: center around yeah, like like using speculative fiction to create
- 32:03Speaker 4: metaphors around lady issues of one kind or another, which
- 32:06Speaker 4: we're probably a little bit too on the nose, but yeah,
- 32:09Speaker 4: but that's okay.
- 32:10Speaker 1: Uh.
- 32:11Speaker 4: Certainly one one standout side random lady character for me
- 32:16Speaker 4: is doctor Bambi Barrenbaum, the name alone, who is an entomologist. Okay,
- 32:23Speaker 4: I'm saying the right one. It's bugs, not words. Yeah, entomologist, yes, great,
- 32:27Speaker 4: and yeah she her parents were both naturalists. That's why
- 32:31Speaker 4: she has the name Bamby. Oh okay, okay, but she
- 32:35Speaker 4: is this lovely, kind of bucksome woman who Molder meets
- 32:41Speaker 4: in one of my favorite episodes, Where Are the Copper
- 32:43Speaker 4: Pages in season three, and he has he's he has
- 32:46Speaker 4: a total crush on her.
- 32:47Speaker 1: He's like goofy, hard eyes.
- 32:50Speaker 4: Yeah, oh yeah, the whole thing, the whole thing, And
- 32:52Speaker 4: she's talking about cockroaches and he hates bugs and like,
- 32:56Speaker 4: so it's very funny but like but like also like
- 32:58Speaker 4: Scully is like trying to get a whole with him
- 33:00Speaker 4: while he's trying to get his game on. And at
- 33:02Speaker 4: one point he just answers the phone and goes like
- 33:05Speaker 4: not now and hangs it right back.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Oh my goodness.
- 33:10Speaker 4: So when Scully finally meets her, like Scully is very snippy,
- 33:18Speaker 4: which I which I didn't, which I get, was like funny,
- 33:22Speaker 4: but I don't appreciate the writing if I hate the
- 33:24Speaker 4: trope of like ladies hate other ladies, especially when there's
- 33:27Speaker 4: a love interest possibly involved, right, especially because they were
- 33:31Speaker 4: not even in a relationship at that point. Except in
- 33:33Speaker 4: my mind, right, oh my gosh, we're going to talk
- 33:38Speaker 4: about this in the shipping part.
- 33:39Speaker 1: But I feel like that's yeah, that's what are you
- 33:41Speaker 1: doing at that point?
- 33:42Speaker 4: Right, yeah, come on, But that was that was the thing,
- 33:45Speaker 4: like like that I was certainly noticing going back through,
- 33:48Speaker 4: Like they start acting like an old married couple pretty
- 33:52Speaker 4: much immediately, and certainly when she gets abducted in season two,
- 33:57Speaker 4: like it is clear that Mulder would kill or die
- 34:01Speaker 4: for this lady, Like he is just completely it's sort
- 34:06Speaker 4: of like a Zara fl In Crowley and yeah.
- 34:10Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that's so.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Again, Lauren, you have you. I'm so glad you're here
- 34:20Speaker 1: because you're bringing such knowledge to it because I, like
- 34:23Speaker 1: I said, I don't want listends will be hearing me
- 34:25Speaker 1: and be like, what, she doesn't know anything about this.
- 34:27Speaker 1: I didn't watch it all, but I think I was
- 34:28Speaker 1: just too young, oh sure to pick up on a
- 34:31Speaker 1: lot of it. But uh, that is definitely interesting that
- 34:36Speaker 1: they were already especially since Chris Carter, as we already said,
- 34:42Speaker 1: was saying I didn't want a romantic relationship, and then
- 34:44Speaker 1: it seems like.
- 34:46Speaker 4: Yeah, it's also like it's so difficult to you know,
- 34:51Speaker 4: you have two attractive people together, and I think the
- 34:55Speaker 4: reaction is like, oh, they're in a relationship. Yeah, especially
- 35:00Speaker 4: if it's if it's two people who are supposed who
- 35:02Speaker 4: are like attracted to that sex a person right for
- 35:06Speaker 4: that desert yeah, right, and so like so like, part
- 35:09Speaker 4: of it is just that we have so few examples
- 35:11Speaker 4: in media of people who aren't in relationships, So people
- 35:15Speaker 4: who are just friends and who that is a sustained
- 35:18Speaker 4: long term friendship. Yes, which is borked. That is completely silly.
- 35:24Speaker 4: That happens in real life so many times.
- 35:27Speaker 1: Yes, Yes, And I've been talking about this too, because
- 35:33Speaker 1: since I'm not into romance, I identify as grace sexually
- 35:38Speaker 1: as sexual. Uh, I don't know why I'm always looking
- 35:42Speaker 1: for romance and stuff like why is this happening? I
- 35:47Speaker 1: don't even like it. Yeah, but but it feels like
- 35:50Speaker 1: we've made it into a more important relationship absolutely than
- 35:55Speaker 1: a friendship. And that should be it shouldn't know, but
- 35:59Speaker 1: oh my goodness that we're we're almost getting to the
- 36:02Speaker 1: shipping part of this.
- 36:04Speaker 4: We are, we are, we are. One other lady that
- 36:07Speaker 4: I wanted to point out from the show is starting
- 36:09Speaker 4: in season four, there was a lady informant. We had
- 36:12Speaker 4: previously had uh a deep roat and mister X and
- 36:16Speaker 4: now this lady informant came in.
- 36:20Speaker 3: By the name of Marita.
- 36:21Speaker 4: Core core cor corvit nikes, Yes that's her name.
- 36:28Speaker 3: It's Russian.
- 36:31Speaker 4: But she was just like very ice cream stereotype and
- 36:34Speaker 4: so and so. She was also in contrast with Scully
- 36:37Speaker 4: being so much goofier and warmer, and like, yeah, fans
- 36:42Speaker 4: hated her, hated or yeah, well this is.
- 36:48Speaker 1: I mean, going back to your point, is she's the
- 36:49Speaker 1: only woman in the show. I feel like every other
- 36:52Speaker 1: woman that comes on is going to be pitted against
- 36:55Speaker 1: her totally, which is we've talked about that before. Shouldn't
- 37:00Speaker 1: be the case that like there's one spot and then
- 37:03Speaker 1: everyone everyone has an enemy.
- 37:05Speaker 4: Of Yeah, absolutely, Yeah, Like if your entire principal cast
- 37:08Speaker 4: is white and then you necessarily only have room for
- 37:11Speaker 4: black people to be a villains, and it's just like
- 37:14Speaker 4: that is so wrong. Why is this a thing? Yes, oh,
- 37:17Speaker 4: Supernatural and Buffy, what the heck were you doing?
- 37:21Speaker 1: Anyway? Yes, anyway. One of the reasons I really wanted
- 37:28Speaker 1: to talk about this is because since it's the thirtieth anniversary,
- 37:31Speaker 1: there have been a lot of headlines about how the
- 37:34Speaker 1: X Files shaped the Internet.
- 37:38Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, and this is actually not a thing that
- 37:41Speaker 4: I realized until you, until you brought it to my attention.
- 37:45Speaker 1: Yes, and it's wild how much of an impact it had.
- 37:53Speaker 1: And again, as I said, with fan fiction, this is
- 37:56Speaker 1: a this is a space that has a lot of women,
- 37:59Speaker 1: a lot of queer people, a lot of them marginalized
- 38:00Speaker 1: people in it because perhaps they're not represented and the
- 38:04Speaker 1: thing they're watching or the thing they're enjoying. So I
- 38:08Speaker 1: wanted to go into a couple of those things and
- 38:11Speaker 1: talk about our maybe experiences with that. But one of
- 38:16Speaker 1: the big things is communities like fan communities online. And
- 38:19Speaker 1: when the show came out in nineteen ninety three, that
- 38:22Speaker 1: was when a lot of us in the United States
- 38:25Speaker 1: were getting access to the Internet regularly for the first time.
- 38:31Speaker 1: It might not have been good.
- 38:32Speaker 3: Oh no, no, no, no.
- 38:33Speaker 4: That that was definitely during dialogs. Oh yeah, that that
- 38:38Speaker 4: modem sound lives in my brain forever.
- 38:40Speaker 3: Yeah, Oh my.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Gosh, it's the sound of nightmares younger listeners. You don't know,
- 38:44Speaker 1: you don't even know. But the interesting thing too, I
- 38:48Speaker 1: was thinking about this is that kind of dovetails with
- 38:52Speaker 1: how I feel like the Internet allowed a lot of
- 38:59Speaker 1: these like here's this picture of Bickfoot, here's this like,
- 39:03Speaker 1: oh sure, it kind of proliferated a lot of things
- 39:05Speaker 1: that the X Files was talking about.
- 39:07Speaker 4: Oh absolutely, And I mean and right right, it really
- 39:09Speaker 4: made possible because previous to that, like anyone who is
- 39:12Speaker 4: who was talking about those kind of mysteries and real
- 39:16Speaker 4: world lore and fringe theories like had to do it
- 39:19Speaker 4: by zine and and like mail and you know, and
- 39:23Speaker 4: so you might you might write letters back and forth.
- 39:27Speaker 4: But the Internet let people connect like that. It did,
- 39:31Speaker 4: I mean not instantly, like you had to go make
- 39:33Speaker 4: a cup of coffee while page loaded.
- 39:35Speaker 1: But I would take a shower later it might beloaded,
- 39:41Speaker 1: who knows, but yeah, it really did. And that is
- 39:47Speaker 1: part of what shaped our Internet as it is. So
- 39:50Speaker 1: people who loved the X Files called themselves x files
- 39:55Speaker 1: p h I l e Yep, yep.
- 39:58Speaker 3: That is a moniker that I fied by.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, yeah to hear about jeez. So here's
- 40:06Speaker 1: the quote from CNN about this. Oh my gosh, yes,
- 40:11Speaker 1: Dann wrote about it. The show's peak popularity in the
- 40:16Speaker 1: mid to late nineties coincided with the proliferating use of
- 40:19Speaker 1: the Internet, where fans self proclaimed X Files gathered to
- 40:23Speaker 1: debate theories and behind the scenes gossip while posting fan fiction,
- 40:28Speaker 1: fan art and more.
- 40:30Speaker 4: Oh wow, this is from a twenty twenty three article. Yes,
- 40:33Speaker 4: this is from like recently.
- 40:34Speaker 1: Yes, wow, I'm telling you, Lauren, there's a reason we're
- 40:38Speaker 1: talking about this.
- 40:40Speaker 3: That's great.
- 40:42Speaker 4: Yeah, and yeah, like like in addition to I really
- 40:45Speaker 4: do think it dovetailed with the internet because the show
- 40:48Speaker 4: lent itself to fandom so much, because it raised so
- 40:51Speaker 4: many questions and did involve all of these mysteries and
- 40:57Speaker 4: little pieces of lore and bits of canspiracy, and you know,
- 41:02Speaker 4: like it was a little less niche and and sexier
- 41:07Speaker 4: than other NERD dramas of the era, like like Star Trek.
- 41:10Speaker 4: The next generation like people who would not be caught
- 41:12Speaker 4: dead watching Star Trek, right, thought X Files was cool.
- 41:17Speaker 1: Right, And I think part of that was maybe they'll
- 41:21Speaker 1: get together. I mean, I mean, which Liza's defand fiction.
- 41:31Speaker 1: As you know, I love to talk about listeners. I
- 41:35Speaker 1: am shocked. I never read X Files fan fiction.
- 41:39Speaker 3: Really.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Oh wow, you know what I started on?
- 41:42Speaker 4: What? Oh god, wow, Wow, you are younger than me.
- 41:46Speaker 4: That's great, that's bonkers.
- 41:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:51Speaker 4: I was probably like Sailor Moon and the X Files
- 41:55Speaker 4: were two of my earliest Like.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Was there some good X Files fans? No? But it
- 42:03Speaker 1: filled me?
- 42:05Speaker 3: It did?
- 42:05Speaker 1: It?
- 42:05Speaker 4: Did?
- 42:08Speaker 3: I definitely.
- 42:09Speaker 4: I don't think I ever wrote any particularly like I
- 42:12Speaker 4: did write a class assignment like that featured Molder because
- 42:16Speaker 4: you had to like describe someone in detail. So I
- 42:19Speaker 4: was like, I can do that and it's not a
- 42:20Speaker 4: real person. So I'm not going to insult anybody.
- 42:22Speaker 1: That's great.
- 42:23Speaker 4: Yeah, but yeah, yeah, I wasn't into the writing part
- 42:26Speaker 4: at that point.
- 42:29Speaker 1: Okay, I should check it out because it's I'm sure
- 42:33Speaker 1: still there. I'm positive it is and the community is
- 42:35Speaker 1: still there. I wrote a lorther Rings fan fiction and
- 42:39Speaker 1: I had a friend read it and she was like,
- 42:42Speaker 1: they kissed for four minutes. I was like, is that
- 42:46Speaker 1: not normal? She was like no, and then I didn't
- 42:49Speaker 1: post it all. No, it was good.
- 42:55Speaker 4: Well I'm sorry that you were discouraged, but I'm glad
- 42:58Speaker 4: that it was for good reasons.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I just love that she was like no.
- 43:03Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, but but like definitely, I yes, Like
- 43:08Speaker 4: I it was clear to me and all of my
- 43:11Speaker 4: friends that Moulder and Scully wanted.
- 43:13Speaker 1: We're yeah, we're gonna get together.
- 43:15Speaker 3: We're gonna get together.
- 43:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 43:17Speaker 3: I was rooting for it for a very long time
- 43:19Speaker 3: until it happened, and.
- 43:20Speaker 1: Then I was mad, Oh, I can't wait to talk
- 43:22Speaker 1: about it. Yes. So my friend who discouraged me from
- 43:25Speaker 1: posting this fan fiction, she also was a huge She
- 43:29Speaker 1: was the same one I listened to the phone with.
- 43:31Speaker 1: She was like, they're gonna get together. She was giving
- 43:33Speaker 1: me all these clues and like see this look and
- 43:36Speaker 1: all of these things. I was like, oh, I don't know.
- 43:49Speaker 1: As I've said many times, the X Files was one
- 43:52Speaker 1: of the first large fan fiction communities online, and uh
- 43:57Speaker 1: it was so big that uh the Scotland Yard investigated
- 44:01Speaker 1: because they thought that it was a cult and perhaps
- 44:06Speaker 1: they should feed.
- 44:08Speaker 4: Wow, yeah, I mean sort of a cult. They did
- 44:11Speaker 4: not need to intervene.
- 44:13Speaker 1: No one knows like they looked intensely at each other,
- 44:22Speaker 1: Which brings us to shipping at last. Yes, you can
- 44:28Speaker 1: see our episode for shipping we did recently for more
- 44:31Speaker 1: about this. But shipping or relationshipping is what it sounds like.
- 44:35Speaker 1: It can look a million different ways anyway you can imagine,
- 44:40Speaker 1: but it's essentially putting people or peoples into a relationship.
- 44:45Speaker 3: Or not canonically.
- 44:47Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, and even in real life people. Oh yes,
- 44:51Speaker 1: that creeps me out, but yes, that does happen. And
- 44:57Speaker 1: it involves often like fan works, uh, fan fiction, music
- 45:02Speaker 1: and art videos. Sure, like a community around like again,
- 45:08Speaker 1: did you see this look? Or did you see this?
- 45:11Speaker 4: Yeah? And and very right and especially with the internet,
- 45:16Speaker 4: very immediate and very intense.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Yes. Yes, And they are also anti shippers, I would
- 45:26Speaker 1: I was going to say, or no romos, but I
- 45:28Speaker 1: actually think they're different. Okay, So anti shippers, I would say,
- 45:31Speaker 1: are somebody who are like I don't want this ship
- 45:34Speaker 1: to happen and I hate this ship. I would say, no,
- 45:38Speaker 1: romos are more like I just don't want romance. Okay,
- 45:42Speaker 1: all right, that's my experience again. You can listen to
- 45:45Speaker 1: our shipping episode where we talked about how that went
- 45:47Speaker 1: really wrong on Tumblr. But uh oh yeah, but the
- 45:52Speaker 1: in either case, they can be just as passionate as
- 45:55Speaker 1: shippers and like, I really don't want this to happen.
- 45:58Speaker 1: And some of the earliest on my no romos felt
- 46:02Speaker 1: like they lost when Moulder and Scully their relationship became canon.
- 46:07Speaker 1: They were like, oh, this war. Yeah, we have a little.
- 46:12Speaker 4: Yes, I have been defeated by their smooches.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 46:19Speaker 4: Yeah, As it turns out, like I guess, I just
- 46:22Speaker 4: wanted the unresolved sexual tension.
- 46:24Speaker 1: Yes, that's what I does.
- 46:25Speaker 4: That's what I enjoyed. I didn't actually want it to
- 46:28Speaker 4: happen on the show I liked.
- 46:31Speaker 1: I liked the tension, right, So I talked about this
- 46:35Speaker 1: in our shipping episode. Sometimes I think you can ship something,
- 46:38Speaker 1: but by shipping it, you don't actually want it to
- 46:40Speaker 1: ever happen, right, You kind of just like the idea
- 46:43Speaker 1: of what it might be.
- 46:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 46:45Speaker 3: Absolutely, mm hmm.
- 46:47Speaker 1: And also there are plenty of examples of yes, when
- 46:50Speaker 1: the ship becomes canon, it did not go how you too?
- 46:54Speaker 3: Oh oh that too?
- 46:55Speaker 1: That too?
- 46:56Speaker 4: Absolutely like, which is one of the purposes of fan
- 46:58Speaker 4: fiction is to you know, like eat something that that
- 47:01Speaker 4: that the way that you would do it.
- 47:04Speaker 3: And once once you've done that, then you can be setting.
- 47:08Speaker 4: Yourself up for failure in terms of like what actually
- 47:10Speaker 4: comes next and what the creators choose to do.
- 47:13Speaker 1: Right exactly. And I would also say there are and
- 47:17Speaker 1: I would put myself in this category there multi shippers
- 47:20Speaker 1: like I could just ship like oh yeah, sure them. Yeah, great,
- 47:24Speaker 1: sounds nice.
- 47:24Speaker 3: Yeah right, that's fun. Yeah yeah.
- 47:26Speaker 4: I don't have a particular attachment a lot of the time, right,
- 47:29Speaker 4: in particular, especially in like a like a team up
- 47:31Speaker 4: kind of thing.
- 47:31Speaker 3: Like like an Avengers universe kind of thing like that,
- 47:34Speaker 3: I'm like.
- 47:34Speaker 1: Yeah, sure, whatever, let's see like in a relationship. Yeah cool.
- 47:39Speaker 1: But I don't ever want it to happen. Usually, I'm
- 47:41Speaker 1: just kind of like I'm interested.
- 47:42Speaker 4: Yeah right, right, you could read it that way, you
- 47:44Speaker 4: can read it this other way.
- 47:45Speaker 3: Interesting. It's like a fun little science experiment, right, It's just.
- 47:49Speaker 1: Like that's going to go. Yeah, But it is interesting
- 47:52Speaker 1: with the show like Exiles, where you do have like
- 47:55Speaker 1: in a very heteronormative sense, like this attractive woman attractive man,
- 48:00Speaker 1: And it was like, but are they are they? Are they?
- 48:07Speaker 4: When?
- 48:08Speaker 1: When it happened?
- 48:10Speaker 3: Yeah, and so right.
- 48:11Speaker 4: I had literally no idea that the word shipping was
- 48:14Speaker 4: invented with the X files fandom.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Yes it was. I didn't know that either, Like we
- 48:21Speaker 1: have been doing it since we've been creating entertainment. But
- 48:25Speaker 1: the term shipping relationshipping was first us in nineteen ninety
- 48:29Speaker 1: three in X Files fandom and the fun part of
- 48:32Speaker 1: this is. It's all online. You can see all these
- 48:36Speaker 1: old posts. They've been archived.
- 48:40Speaker 4: Oh dear, that makes me suspect that probably some of
- 48:44Speaker 4: my very embarrassing like thirteen year old like like like
- 48:48Speaker 4: fan theories about stuff are out there somewhere.
- 48:52Speaker 3: The truth posts are out there.
- 48:57Speaker 1: Yes, oh they're great. It is. I recommend looking it up.
- 49:04Speaker 1: But yeah, interestingly to me, because shipping has gone mainstream
- 49:09Speaker 1: now people use it all the time, But at this
- 49:13Speaker 1: point it was viewed as something strange. People did like
- 49:17Speaker 1: what are you doing? You don't you don't think this
- 49:20Speaker 1: show was perfect. You're trying to do your own thing.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Oh you're not a real fan, And there would be
- 49:28Speaker 1: email attacks, they would get harassed, like it was very
- 49:32Speaker 1: so some of the posts you'll see were like, hey,
- 49:35Speaker 1: I'm doing my shipping thing, but I'm not bothering.
- 49:37Speaker 4: You, like yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, like like like you
- 49:40Speaker 4: can feel however you want to about it. This is
- 49:42Speaker 4: just how I feel exactly, yeah yeah.
- 49:45Speaker 1: And even some of them said like I don't I
- 49:50Speaker 1: don't even want it to become a romance show. That's
- 49:52Speaker 1: like like the last thing I want. Yeah, I just
- 49:54Speaker 1: am kind of exploring this sure aspect of it.
- 49:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm just saying that they want to bump.
- 50:01Speaker 1: Because I just want to smush their faces.
- 50:03Speaker 4: Yeah, they're both attractive faces that it would look nice. Yeah,
- 50:08Speaker 4: kind of.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Exactly. I did read. I don't know if this is true.
- 50:15Speaker 1: I haven't really looked into it, but I did read
- 50:17Speaker 1: that ust unresolved sexual tension, as you said, was also
- 50:21Speaker 1: from X files. I also, yeah, heard MSR Molder Scully
- 50:26Speaker 1: romance was the whole term.
- 50:30Speaker 3: Okay, I don't remember that one.
- 50:32Speaker 1: But sure. And then I want to read this quote
- 50:34Speaker 1: again from CNN. But there's no denying how much the
- 50:38Speaker 1: online discourse revolved around the Molder and Scully pairing, whether
- 50:41Speaker 1: it involved shippers and no Romo's good naturally good naturely
- 50:47Speaker 1: or in all seriousness flaming each other in online forums,
- 50:52Speaker 1: or Molder slash Scully fan fiction. Our fan videos set
- 50:55Speaker 1: to schmaltzy love song.
- 50:57Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yes, oh yeah, oh dear fan videos man
- 51:02Speaker 4: fan video.
- 51:03Speaker 1: Oh I would watch them when I was younger. The
- 51:07Speaker 1: proof I needed. But I also forgot about flaming. Yeah yep,
- 51:12Speaker 1: oh yes, all right, well, let well we're going to
- 51:19Speaker 1: get into the impact. But again, just so you know,
- 51:23Speaker 1: if you're hearing anything around us. You are listening to
- 51:27Speaker 1: stuff I've never told you. With Lauren Vogelbaum guest host,
- 51:31Speaker 1: Thank you so Much, live at the iHeart Podcast Studio
- 51:35Speaker 1: powered by Bows at the House of Music at iHeartRadio
- 51:38Speaker 1: Music Festival. It's fun to be talking about the X
- 51:42Speaker 1: Files with all of this going on outside. I wish
- 51:47Speaker 1: we could showcase what's happening.
- 51:49Speaker 3: Yeah, it's pretty wild.
- 51:51Speaker 4: There's just people walking by and kind of kind of
- 51:53Speaker 4: kind of waving or just sort of staring, being a
- 51:55Speaker 4: little bit confused that. Yeah, I'm just talking about my
- 52:00Speaker 4: unfic feels about modern Scully.
- 52:02Speaker 3: It feels right, yeah, sure.
- 52:04Speaker 1: Why yeah we are. We are the in the nineties,
- 52:08Speaker 1: the weirdos that are quarantined from people going to do
- 52:14Speaker 1: other things. Heck, we did. We did want to talk
- 52:19Speaker 1: about the impact that this show had and Scully had.
- 52:23Speaker 3: Oh sure, right, because like all right, like like when.
- 52:28Speaker 4: X Files really uh in general, just paved the way
- 52:32Speaker 4: for other genre fiction in television like it like it did.
- 52:36Speaker 4: It did dovetail with the launch of the Sci Fi
- 52:38Speaker 4: Channel in nineteen ninety two, but like without X Files,
- 52:41Speaker 4: I don't think we would have had Lost or Buffy
- 52:45Speaker 4: or certainly fringe or supernatural or like Rick and Morty
- 52:49Speaker 4: or you know, on and on. It kind of created
- 52:53Speaker 4: its own genre of what we were talking about earlier,
- 52:55Speaker 4: like long running TV series that have main recurring cares
- 53:00Speaker 4: and like an overall plot arc ish, but are also
- 53:06Speaker 4: allowed to play from episode to episode within the broader
- 53:08Speaker 4: realm of what genre fiction is or what it can be.
- 53:12Speaker 4: And yeah, like like even in the same episode, sometimes
- 53:14Speaker 4: bouncing from horror to mystery to drama to comedy.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Yeah, and if you haven't watched this, listeners like some
- 53:23Speaker 1: of the episode, they'll stay with you.
- 53:26Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, some of them are very hecking upsetting.
- 53:29Speaker 4: I did not watch Home ever again.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Yes, that one's well, yeah, we talked about that one.
- 53:35Speaker 4: Did the Bridget episode, right, I think I might have
- 53:37Speaker 4: watched it, like one other time. I was like maybe maybe, Nope,
- 53:41Speaker 4: still very upsetting. Nope, still don't like that.
- 53:44Speaker 3: Okay cool?
- 53:45Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, and that was one of those episodes that
- 53:47Speaker 1: was like, eh, there's no supernatural part to this one, really.
- 53:50Speaker 3: Just people, just people.
- 53:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:53Speaker 4: Yeah, that episode got banned from ever being aired again.
- 53:58Speaker 1: Yep, sure did. Sure, But yeah, I know.
- 54:03Speaker 3: Like some of the some of the images and some
- 54:05Speaker 3: of the I still think of that.
- 54:06Speaker 4: There was one episode where Scully got a tattoo and
- 54:10Speaker 4: started tripping out and like there was all of this
- 54:13Speaker 4: bad stuff happening, and I.
- 54:14Speaker 3: Still think about that one.
- 54:15Speaker 6: I'm like little, yeah, yeah, and it has had I
- 54:23Speaker 6: was reading a list of like all of the instances
- 54:26Speaker 6: The X Files has appeared in, like songs or other media,
- 54:29Speaker 6: and it's just.
- 54:30Speaker 1: It's a huge list. They had this really big impact,
- 54:34Speaker 1: and Scully did too. She people loved her, like, she
- 54:39Speaker 1: was really critically acclaimed, and she's stuck around. She has
- 54:47Speaker 1: a Barbie, which I love. She's always on these list
- 54:52Speaker 1: of iconic heroines that have often inspired other iconic heroines
- 54:57Speaker 1: in media, and she the legacy of her a lot
- 55:03Speaker 1: of people, right is she encouraged a whole generation of
- 55:09Speaker 1: young women, of young girls to think about a career
- 55:14Speaker 1: in stem, whether they pursued it or not, like yeah,
- 55:18Speaker 1: just to think like, oh oh yea, I want to
- 55:20Speaker 1: do that.
- 55:21Speaker 3: Yeah I can do that.
- 55:21Speaker 4: She's doing that so well, she's so professional and good
- 55:26Speaker 4: at this job and maybe yeah maybe I could yeah
- 55:30Speaker 4: why not?
- 55:31Speaker 1: Yes? Yes, And let us talk about that a minute.
- 55:35Speaker 1: So we did do the episode with Bridget where she
- 55:37Speaker 1: really broke this down really well. So check that out.
- 55:41Speaker 1: But just just in case, since we're doing kind of
- 55:44Speaker 1: a like round up of all X files news. Yeah,
- 55:51Speaker 1: so the skull effect is essentially something that has been
- 55:56Speaker 1: studied by the GENA. Davis Institute, which I love.
- 56:00Speaker 3: Yes, absolutely, Yes.
- 56:03Speaker 1: Two thousand women they surveyed, they found, quote, among the
- 56:07Speaker 1: women who are familiar with the character, fifty percent say
- 56:11Speaker 1: Scully increased their interest in STEM, and forty three percent
- 56:14Speaker 1: say that they considered working in STEM because of her. Wow.
- 56:18Speaker 1: Ninety one percent that knew of her said she was
- 56:21Speaker 1: a good role model and it was great reading the
- 56:24Speaker 1: stories people wrote, and they were they would talk about
- 56:27Speaker 1: like just sitting around and watching the show with friends
- 56:31Speaker 1: and being like inspired, Like okay, Lop, maybe I want
- 56:35Speaker 1: to go do that isnt but so cool.
- 56:38Speaker 3: It kind of had the opposite effect for me.
- 56:40Speaker 4: I was like, I definitely couldn't do an autopsy. I
- 56:42Speaker 4: could never do an autopsy in my life. I'm not
- 56:45Speaker 4: going to go into that one.
- 56:46Speaker 3: But but but appreciate still appreciate the role model of course.
- 56:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:50Speaker 1: Well, I mean that's also fair. Sometimes you gotta recognize
- 56:53Speaker 1: that I could do it, but it's not for me. Yeah, yes,
- 56:59Speaker 1: and I do love When Jilly and Anderson was asked
- 57:02Speaker 1: about this, she said, we got a lot of letters
- 57:05Speaker 1: all the time, and I was told quite frequently by
- 57:07Speaker 1: girls who were going into the medical world or the
- 57:09Speaker 1: science world, or the FBI world or other worlds that
- 57:12Speaker 1: I ranged that they were pursuing those pursuits because of
- 57:17Speaker 1: the character of Scully. And I said, yay, Oh that's
- 57:21Speaker 1: so sweet, isn't it.
- 57:22Speaker 3: That's really cool.
- 57:23Speaker 1: I love it so much. Oh oh, and that's that's
- 57:28Speaker 1: the importance of representation. Representation isn't everything, but it is important.
- 57:31Speaker 1: Like if you're watching something as a kid at three am,
- 57:36Speaker 1: your huddle, your friends of the TV, you're like, oh,
- 57:40Speaker 1: I want to be like her. Oh I could do it, Yeah,
- 57:44Speaker 1: she can do it. Like that's important.
- 57:47Speaker 4: It is important, absolutely, absently. More of that, more of
- 57:51Speaker 4: that place.
- 57:52Speaker 1: Yes, yes, But this brings us to our final note.
- 57:56Speaker 1: And I wanted to put this in here because I
- 57:59Speaker 1: love it, but also because Samantha did threaten me if
- 58:02Speaker 1: I don't talk about the book. We do mention Scully's
- 58:06Speaker 1: pantsuits in Okay, okay, yes, so one thing people love
- 58:14Speaker 1: about this character are her pantsuits. Oh yeah, there are
- 58:19Speaker 1: tumblrs justus.
- 58:22Speaker 3: That's amazing.
- 58:24Speaker 4: I'm so proud of the Internet for that.
- 58:27Speaker 1: That's beautiful.
- 58:29Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, so okay, So so if you're if you're
- 58:32Speaker 4: unfamiliar with the show, she she was always wearing or
- 58:38Speaker 4: most of the time, like her professional business attire was
- 58:42Speaker 4: these big suits, like these big puffy suit jackets and
- 58:49Speaker 4: long trench coats and tapered pants and uh. And that
- 58:55Speaker 4: evolved over time, is style evolved, But yeah, certainly in
- 58:59Speaker 4: the beginning in nineteen ninety three, it was that very
- 59:04Speaker 4: boxy concept of the early nineties. And then as third
- 59:08Speaker 4: wave feminism really hit pop culture and we started getting
- 59:14Speaker 4: you know, the Buffy Summers and the share Horowitz's and
- 59:20Speaker 4: the Spice girls of the world, then you know, like
- 59:23Speaker 4: like outfits started changing, and business attire for women started
- 59:27Speaker 4: becoming hyper feminine in some ways, and like certainly more
- 59:30Speaker 4: sleek but less based on men's wear and less.
- 59:36Speaker 3: Giant shoulder pads.
- 59:39Speaker 1: Right yeah, right, And you can see her the profile
- 59:43Speaker 1: we did on Danas Scully for more about that, because
- 59:45Speaker 1: I do love talking about her pants suits, but they
- 59:48Speaker 1: are very popularly a lot of people call it competence
- 59:50Speaker 1: core yea and you can trace kind of what you
- 59:55Speaker 1: were talking about how her costuming changed and and there
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: is an interesting narrative of like fitting into a male
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: space by wearing more male clothes and then more traditionally
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: male clothes and then moving away from that and what
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: does that mean? But it is fascinating. I'm a big
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: let's talk about cosmetic person.
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: And as a character too, you know, like like she's
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: going through all of these changes and she's getting a
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: lot more.
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: She kind of rediscovers.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: Herself throughout the course of the show.
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: And what she wants that to be and what that
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: can be.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: Right. I have the most epic shoulder pad. It's a
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: dress suit. It's not a pants suit.
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: I think it's my mom's, but it might be one
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: of her sisters. Okay, but it's it's magenta goodness and
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: it has roses like embroidered and it is the most
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: like feminine business power dress suit. Wow, you can imagine.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: That's amazing and I still have it because you do it.
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: You should never let that go. That's that sounds beautiful
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: and very intense at the same time.
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: I word it adds like showlder.
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: Yeah, okay for sure.
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: So I graduated high school in the year two thousand
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: and while this show is still very much a thing
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: and for sure, the like interview suit that I went
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: out and bought was a double breasted pinstripe suit.
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: Yes, with it's a Scully suit. That's what it is.
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: That's just what I yeah, oh absolutely, yeah.
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: Yeah. And I've I've never I've never actually done a
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: Scully like a full Scully cosplay, but the.
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: Suit's right there.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: I mean, I know, and we talked about, well, I
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: said I might cosplay as scullyon and I just.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: Did it, right.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: It was so sad when I heard that.
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: I was like, I'm going to show up to this
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: and then I was like, but my backpack is minutes
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: from breaking, which it really is.
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: But yeah, maybe maybe someday.
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: Yeah, and we can always just casual cosplay some Scully
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: like true, we could just show up to the next
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: like work meeting or whatever it is, like it both
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: in our.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: See if anyone realizes what it is, I love that game.
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're good at that game.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: I am good at that game. It's a strange sense
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: of accomplishment when no one realizes it. Sure, then it's
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: also like appreciation when someone does it's a strange, totally
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: am well, any closing thoughts on the Miles.
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: Lord, you know, uh, it gave us the gift of
- 1:02:54Speaker 4: Jillian Anderson. She did write and direct an episode in
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: one of the later season and I want to say
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: season eight ish maybe, And you know, like, I'm so
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: glad that she's been able to have a lovely career
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: and because I enjoy watching her. It's so fun whenever
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: she's in anything. Yeah, and her British accent is so
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: on point. I think you guys talked about that too,
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: and yeah, yeah, I like, what a what a weird
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: thirty years ago. That's fine, that's great, that's great, that's fine. Yeah,
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: a lot of things Jurassic Park as well. Oh wow, heck,
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: which I also.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: Got troubled for watching this n It was a risky
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: year for me. Yeah, a lot of groundings happened, I heard. Yeah.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: I mean, I think it's it's fascinating to look back
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: at the impact it's had, especially now, And we didn't
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: know what the Internet was going to be. We share,
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: you know, it's going to become this thing, and the
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: creators didn't know, We didn't know the X Files was
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: going to be such a big part of that and
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: how much it did impact fan communities who are largely women,
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: and then like the Scully the Scully effects, Scully effect.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: That's amazing, that's so cool.
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: That is the coolest thing about this weird genre television
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: show from the nineteen nineties.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: I would love to hear from listeners if you haven't
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: watched it, Oh my gosh, go and watch it and
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: let us know what you think.
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: Yes, yes, yeah, let us let us know maybe maybe
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: maybe do it in two parts, like let us know
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: what you think it's going to be based on this episode.
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: If you've got all the way through this episode having
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: no I have never watched it, yes, and then the after.
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: The after yes, oh my gosh. If anyone wants to
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: just constantly updated is like what yeah, sorry, I'm.
