Latest / The 405 Payroll / Closing the OKC Rent Gap: High-Paying Warehouse Roles and Career Training
Transcript
- 0:13Welcome to The 405 Payroll.
- 0:16I'm Claire Brooks, and this is the lunch break show where we turn Oklahoma City
- 0:20hiring news into something you can use today.
- 0:23And I'm Miles.
- 0:24Today's headline comes from Apartment List's October Rent Index,
- 0:28and it's one a lot of us feel.
- 0:30Oklahoma City's median rent is now $1,114 a month, an all time high for their
- 0:36series.
- 0:37That's up 1.2% from a year ago and up 4.1% since January.
- 0:43One bedrooms sit at a median of $919, and two bedrooms at $1,139.
- 0:51Here's the part that explains why it feels tight.
- 0:54Vacancy dropped from 7.65% to 5.73% over the past year.
- 1:00Fewer empty apartments means fewer places to shop around, and less room to bargain.
- 1:05So let's not sit in that.
- 1:06Let's do the math, because the math is where the good news lives.
- 1:10Say you earn $15 to $16 an hour.
- 1:12That's roughly $2,600 a month before taxes.
- 1:16And $1,114 against $2,600 is about 43% of your gross pay.
- 1:22It's even bigger once you look at take home.
- 1:24So rent eats nearly half of what actually lands in your account.
- 1:28Which leaves very little for utilities, gas, groceries, and the surprise stuff.
- 1:33That's not a you problem.
- 1:35That's arithmetic.
- 1:36Now flip it.
- 1:38At $21 an hour, full time, you're at about $3,640 a month gross.
- 1:43At $28, you're near $4,850.
- 1:46And at $21, that median rent sits right around the 30% line that housing folks use
- 1:52as a benchmark.
- 1:53At $28, it's closer to 23%.
- 1:57Same apartment, same rent, a completely different month.
- 2:01So the whole show is about that gap, from $15 or $16 up to somewhere between $21 and
- 2:07$28.
- 2:09It's not a fantasy number.
- 2:10We've got named Oklahoma City employers starting at $20.50 and up.
- 2:15We've got six stops today: who's hiring, training that pays,
- 2:19extra money this week, making a raise stick, and a closing story.
- 2:24One note before we go.
- 2:25Pay rates and prices come from current postings and program pages,
- 2:29and postings change fast.
- 2:32So confirm the details with the employer before you rearrange your day.
- 2:36Good call.
- 2:36And nobody here is saying you're behind.
- 2:39You're already working hard.
- 2:40We're just pointing at where the next dollars are.
- 2:43Let's go find them.
- 2:44Let's start on the south side, because a lot of this is down there.
- 2:47Hobby Lobby's distribution center campus in Oklahoma City is over 10 million square
- 2:52feet and handles more than 80,000 products for 900 plus stores.
- 2:57And it has its own Hiring Center at 3700 South Council Road,
- 3:02ZIP 73179.
- 3:05Walk ins are accepted Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.
- 3:07to 4 p.m.
- 3:09What are the roles?
- 3:10Distribution Order Puller at $21 an hour, full time.
- 3:14Ecommerce Order Pullers and Packers at $21 on first and second shift.
- 3:19Night Shift Stocker from $21.75.
- 3:22And part time Truck Loaders at $17.50.
- 3:25Do you need warehouse experience?
- 3:27It varies by listing, so ask at the desk which ones fit you.
- 3:31Full time roles list medical, dental, vision, prescription coverage,
- 3:35a 401(k) with company match, and an employee discount.
- 3:39One honest note.
- 3:40Some of those Hobby Lobby postings showed as 30 plus days old on Indeed,
- 3:44so ask whether they're still open.
- 3:46Walking in settles that fast.
- 3:48Second stop, SpartanNash, southeast Oklahoma City, ZIP 73129.
- 3:54Warehouse Order Selector, full time, starting at $20.50 an hour.
- 3:59You pick grocery products and run a motorized pallet jack.
- 4:03And here's the part I like: the company pays for the equipment training,
- 4:07and no prior warehouse certification is required.
- 4:10So if you've never touched a pallet jack, that's not a wall.
- 4:14How do you apply?
- 4:15Search SpartanNash Warehouse Order Selector, Oklahoma City,
- 4:18on their careers page or on Indeed, where it's listed as easy apply.
- 4:23Have your work history ready, even if it's retail or food service.
- 4:27Third, McLane Company, south Oklahoma City, ZIP 73149.
- 4:32Warehouse Specialist One, full time, $19 to $23 an hour.
- 4:37Experience with pallet jacks, reach trucks, or forklifts is preferred but not
- 4:41required, and the training is on the job.
- 4:44That's a real range, so ask where in the $19 to $23 you'd start based on what you've
- 4:49done.
- 4:50Your reliability, your lifting, your customer service, all of that counts.
- 4:54And if nights work for you, US Foods lists a Night Warehouse Selector at 10211 North
- 5:00I 35 Service Road, from $23.64 an hour, Sunday through Thursday,
- 5:04starting at 4:30 p.m.
- 5:06They prefer experience, but apply anyway.
- 5:08If you're at $16 today, that's a jump of more than $7 an hour.
- 5:13Pick one and apply.
- 5:15Now the next rung.
- 5:17Say you're at $15 to $18 an hour and you want $22 to $28.
- 5:21One local path is machining, through Francis Tuttle Technology Center.
- 5:26Machining.
- 5:27Like, making metal parts?
- 5:29Right, cutting precision parts, the kind used in aerospace,
- 5:33defense, energy, and precision tooling around the region.
- 5:36Graduates enter jobs that pay $22 to $28 an hour and up.
- 5:41Okay, what does it cost?
- 5:43Because I'm guessing that's the scary part.
- 5:45It's the opposite.
- 5:47In state adult tuition at Francis Tuttle is $2.20 per clock hour.
- 5:53The Manual Machining Assistant program is 480 clock hours, so $1,056 in base
- 5:59tuition.
- 6:00And time?
- 6:0118 weeks full time, or 36 weeks part time, in a morning block,
- 6:067:55 to 11 a.m., or an afternoon block, 12:30 to 3:35 p.m.
- 6:12That afternoon block could work around a night shift, honestly.
- 6:16What about the full program?
- 6:18The complete CNC Machinist career major is 960 clock hours,
- 6:22$2,112 in tuition, one school year full time or two years part time.
- 6:29Along the way you earn OSHA 10, forklift certification, and Precision Measurement
- 6:34Instruments credentials.
- 6:35So the forklift certification, which those warehouse jobs care about,
- 6:39comes inside the program.
- 6:41Exactly.
- 6:42The Portland Campus is at 3500 Northwest 150th Street, and the Reno Campus is at
- 6:487301 West Reno Avenue.
- 6:51Now the question everyone wants answered.
- 6:53Can somebody pay for this without a pile of cash?
- 6:57Often, yes.
- 6:58The options include Pell Grants, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants,
- 7:02and the Oklahoma Tuition Aid Grant, which covers up to $480 per 480 hour payment
- 7:08period.
- 7:09There's also WIOA funding through Oklahoma Works and the Central Oklahoma Workforce
- 7:14Innovation Board.
- 7:15Together those can frequently cover all of an adult student's tuition and equipment
- 7:20fees.
- 7:21Frequently, not always.
- 7:22So ask.
- 7:24Right, eligibility depends on your situation.
- 7:27Call Francis Tuttle's adult admissions and ask for financial aid,
- 7:31and ask about WIOA through Oklahoma Works in the same week.
- 7:36And do the math with me.
- 7:38Say you go from $17 to $22 an hour.
- 7:40That's about $860 more gross every month.
- 7:45So even if you paid the full $1,056 yourself, a raise like that pays it back in a
- 7:51little over a month.
- 7:52And for a lot of people, the grants mean they never pay it at all.
- 7:56Okay, extra money this week, because training takes time and rent is due on the
- 8:02first.
- 8:02Two ideas, and neither one is a get rich scheme.
- 8:06Honest numbers are the whole point.
- 8:08First, CSL Plasma, 716 Northwest 23rd Street, Oklahoma City
- 8:1473103.
- 8:16The phone number is 405 521 9204.
- 8:21New donors can get up to $100 for the first donation, and CSL's promotional schedule
- 8:26lets new donors earn up to $700 to $800 in the first month.
- 8:31Up to is the key phrase, so check the current schedule when you call.
- 8:35Payment loads onto a reloadable prepaid card right after each donation.
- 8:40How long does it take?
- 8:41The first visit is about two hours because of the health screening.
- 8:45After that it's 60 to 90 minutes.
- 8:47You can donate up to twice in a seven day period.
- 8:50And what do you bring?
- 8:52Nothing's worse than driving over and getting turned around.
- 8:55Photo ID, proof of your Social Security number, and proof of local residency,
- 9:00which a lease or a utility bill covers.
- 9:02Second idea, Roadie, a UPS delivery platform.
- 9:06Drivers deliver things like retail goods, tools, auto parts,
- 9:10and luggage for partners such as Home Depot, Best Buy, Tractor Supply,
- 9:14and Delta Air Lines out of Will Rogers World Airport.
- 9:18The nice part is the pay shows upfront before you accept.
- 9:21Local single trips pay up to $12 to $25, multi stop deliveries pay $25 to $50,
- 9:28and big or bulky items pay $20 to $50 plus.
- 9:32What's realistic take home?
- 9:34Average per task pay runs about $9.60 to $11.65.
- 9:39People driving routes they already take can bring in $50 to $150 a week.
- 9:44That's before gas, so pick gigs that match your drive.
- 9:48And when does the money hit?
- 9:50Instant cashout opens after five deliveries and an account that's been active seven
- 9:54days.
- 9:55So sign up today, because that clock starts when you do.
- 9:59Fun math.
- 9:59Say you take the $100 plasma start and add $100 a week from Roadie.
- 10:04That's about $500 in a month before gas, and you're still keeping your day job.
- 10:09And both are flexible, so if one stops fitting your schedule,
- 10:13you can drop it and keep the other.
- 10:15Start with whichever is easier to begin tonight.
- 10:20Raises are great, and the next challenge is keeping them when a surprise bill shows
- 10:25up.
- 10:26So here's one local resource and one habit.
- 10:29Resource first.
- 10:30Upward Transitions, 1134 Northwest 4th Street, Oklahoma City 73106.
- 10:37They're a United Way community partner focused on housing stability in Oklahoma City
- 10:42and Oklahoma County.
- 10:43They provide emergency rent and utility assistance.
- 10:47It's limited to one time, up to two months' rent, not to exceed $1,000.
- 10:51Who qualifies?
- 10:53Qualifying households with a child under 18 or a senior 55 or older.
- 10:58So it won't fit everyone, but if it fits you, it's real money.
- 11:03And how do you get in line?
- 11:05Online screening opens Mondays at 7 a.m., and phone screening opens at 9 a.m.
- 11:10The number is 405 232 5507.
- 11:15Set a Monday alarm.
- 11:17That's a real tip.
- 11:19And here's a part people overlook.
- 11:20They also help low income workers pay to replace a missing state ID,
- 11:25driver's license, or birth certificate.
- 11:28Which is huge, because a missing ID can stall onboarding at a new job or block you
- 11:33from enrolling in a training course.
- 11:35Sometimes the only thing between you and $21 an hour is a piece of paper.
- 11:41So if a job offer is waiting on documents, call them.
- 11:45Now, the habit.
- 11:46Split direct deposit.
- 11:48When you get a raise or steady gig income, send half of the difference into a
- 11:52separate savings account automatically.
- 11:54Here's an example.
- 11:55Going from $18 to $22 is $4 more an hour, about $690 more a month before taxes.
- 12:03Half of that, around $345, goes straight to savings.
- 12:07And you still get to feel the other half.
- 12:09That matters.
- 12:10You should enjoy the raise.
- 12:12Totally.
- 12:13The savings is for the utility spike in a hot July or a slow season when hours drop.
- 12:19At that pace, six months builds roughly $2,000 before taxes.
- 12:24How do you set it up?
- 12:26Ask payroll or HR about split direct deposit, or ask your bank.
- 12:30Do it before the first raised paycheck, so the money never shows up in your spending
- 12:35account.
- 12:36Time for our closing story.
- 12:37A quick honesty note: we don't have a verified neighbor's story we can name today,
- 12:42and we won't make up a real person.
- 12:44So here's a picture built entirely from today's numbers.
- 12:48Call her Dana, which is a made up name.
- 12:50She's at $16 an hour in retail, roughly $2,600 a month before taxes,
- 12:56and rent in her building is right around that $1,114 median.
- 13:00Step one, Dana walks into the Hiring Center on South Council Road before 4 p.m.
- 13:05and asks which roles fit her.
- 13:07She lands a $21 an hour order puller job.
- 13:11That's about $3,640 a month, roughly $1,000 more than before.
- 13:16Same rent, but now it's near 30% of her pay instead of 43%.
- 13:21Step two, she sets up split direct deposit and sends half the raise,
- 13:26around $500 a month, into savings before she can spend it.
- 13:31Step three, she calls Francis Tuttle about the afternoon machining block and asks
- 13:35about WIOA funding through Oklahoma Works.
- 13:38Then she's on the path toward the $22 to $28 an hour machining jobs,
- 13:43with forklift certification and OSHA 10 along the way.
- 13:47What I like is that none of it takes a miracle.
- 13:49It takes a first call.
- 13:51And a first application.
- 13:53Those small wins count, and they're worth celebrating before the big ones show up.
- 13:58So what's the hardest step?
- 14:01Honestly, the first one.
- 14:02After that, the next one is easier to see.
- 14:05Which brings us to your one action before the end of the day.
- 14:08Pick one of the three employers, Hobby Lobby, SpartanNash, or McLane,
- 14:13and send in one application today.
- 14:15Just one.
- 14:16Not all three.
- 14:17If you're near South Council Road on your lunch break, the Hobby Lobby Hiring Center
- 14:21is open until 4 p.m.
- 14:23One application.
- 14:25That's the whole assignment.
- 14:26Everything else we talked about can wait until after it's done.
- 14:30Thanks for spending your lunch with us.
- 14:32I'm Claire Brooks.
- 14:33And I'm Miles.
- 14:34This was The 405 Payroll.
- 14:37Go get that paycheck.
