- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello everyone and welcome into another episode of DiCecco Daily.
- 0:13Speaker 1: It's Andrew DiCecco, Eagles beat reporter for InsideTheBirds.com. A new
- 0:18Speaker 1: week starts now, but we do need to look back
- 0:21Speaker 1: a little bit on the Eagles 24-20 win over the
- 0:24Speaker 1: Tennessee Titans. Specifically focusing on the injuries sustained to running
- 0:29Speaker 1: back Saquon Barkley and tight end Dallas Goddard. And I
- 0:32Speaker 1: also want to read for you a quote that Nick
- 0:34Speaker 1: Sirianni said on Monday about Cam Juergens and his inexperience
- 0:40Speaker 1: at left guard and what it takes to be able
- 0:42Speaker 1: to do that and what kind of a teammate he
- 0:45Speaker 1: is for making that move if it meant putting someone
- 0:49Speaker 1: like Drew Kendall with not a lot of experience at
- 0:51Speaker 1: a position in which he majors in at center. So
- 0:57Speaker 1: let me grab that for you. He says, I think
- 1:03Speaker 1: it says a lot. We've got a lot of guys
- 1:05Speaker 1: that will sacrifice for the team. Obviously, we have to
- 1:08Speaker 1: do whatever we think we need to do to help
- 1:11Speaker 1: us win each and every football game, and it sure
- 1:13Speaker 1: helps having great teammates.
- 1:15Speaker 2: I think this team's full of them.
- 1:17Speaker 1: We spend an awful lot of time on that and
- 1:19Speaker 1: an awful lot of time praising that when we see it.
- 1:22Speaker 2: It says a lot about them.
- 1:23Speaker 1: There are different opportunities within walkthrough, within some different things
- 1:27Speaker 1: where you can get some work, but a majority of
- 1:30Speaker 1: his time was spent at center and him being the
- 1:32Speaker 1: starting center.
- 1:33Speaker 2: So that was new for him. He's done it in
- 1:35Speaker 2: the past. Obviously, it was right guard, but he's done
- 1:38Speaker 2: that in the past. Not a ton of reps. Yeah,
- 1:41Speaker 2: not a ton of reps there.
- 1:42Speaker 1: I don't know if I have a count for you
- 1:43Speaker 1: or if any at all, but he sure got a
- 1:45Speaker 1: lot of reps this week at it and thought he
- 1:48Speaker 1: came out against a really good defensive.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Front and played a solid game.
- 1:54Speaker 1: So look, it was a little rocky for Cam Juergens
- 1:58Speaker 1: in that game. And it's also important to note that
- 2:02Speaker 1: He was playing left guard for the first time in
- 2:04Speaker 1: his career.
- 2:05Speaker 2: He's a center. That's where most of his work came from.
- 2:10Speaker 1: And you can hear that from what Nick Sirianni had
- 2:12Speaker 1: to say. But I understand that there's going to be
- 2:16Speaker 1: a lot of angst when it comes to the offensive line.
- 2:18Speaker 1: And what I can say is, because there's not a
- 2:21Speaker 1: lot of cards the Eagles can play at this stage,
- 2:25Speaker 1: you got to just hope, if you're an.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Eagles fan listening, that....
- 2:31Speaker 1: It'll work itself out through continuity, time on task, learning
- 2:36Speaker 1: how each other plays, specifically Drew Kendall and Cam Juergens
- 2:42Speaker 1: and how Cam Juergens and Jordan Mailata will be able
- 2:45Speaker 1: to work off of one another. It's going to take
- 2:48Speaker 1: some time. I mean, this is something that's new. It
- 2:51Speaker 1: was just this past week that they've rolled out this lineup,
- 2:54Speaker 1: and I do get the sense that this is something
- 2:56Speaker 1: that they're committed to. You don't want to do a
- 2:58Speaker 1: lot of toggling there unless it just becomes so detrimental
- 3:02Speaker 1: to the offense where you can't run what you want
- 3:06Speaker 1: to run. You can't run your offense. But I certainly
- 3:10Speaker 1: think it would be premature to call for another reconfiguration
- 3:16Speaker 1: of that line.
- 3:18Speaker 2: It wasn't pretty.
- 3:19Speaker 1: There was a lot of leaky offensive line play from
- 3:22Speaker 1: the interior there. And I'm going to double down on
- 3:26Speaker 1: what I said. I thought Drew Kendall played a pretty,
- 3:30Speaker 1: I thought he fared pretty well. And you have to
- 3:32Speaker 1: look at the circumstances. It was his first time in
- 3:35Speaker 1: a meaningful NFL game in which he started at center.
- 3:39Speaker 1: The Titans have a pretty stout defensive line led by
- 3:42Speaker 1: none other than Jeffrey Simmons, who had his way. But
- 3:46Speaker 1: when you factor all that in and the checks and
- 3:50Speaker 1: just having to be cerebral and stoic in the moment and,
- 3:55Speaker 1: I thought he did some good things. And just listen
- 3:57Speaker 1: back to what Jalen Hurts had to say about Drew Kendall.
- 4:00Speaker 2: And I thought, I.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Mean, it comes across when you talk to Drew Kendall,
- 4:04Speaker 1: but he has a lot of poise. He's the son
- 4:08Speaker 1: of Pete Kendall, who played for many years in the NFL.
- 4:11Speaker 1: So he's wired a little bit differently. He's pretty calm.
- 4:15Speaker 1: He has an even-keeled demeanor. But everything that I gathered
- 4:19Speaker 1: on him in the pre-draft process is that this is
- 4:21Speaker 1: just a very sharp-minded football player. He's... really cerebral in
- 4:28Speaker 1: the sense that he just has a good a good
- 4:31Speaker 1: feel for what defenses are trying to do he can
- 4:33Speaker 1: diagnose things pre-snap and he's just going to get better
- 4:36Speaker 1: with more time now i'm not trying to make him
- 4:39Speaker 1: out to be a pro bowl player or anything like
- 4:43Speaker 1: that but you just got to give it a little
- 4:45Speaker 1: bit of time for things to to marinate they have
- 4:48Speaker 1: a longer week now to prepare for the assumption here
- 4:54Speaker 1: is that more reps with one another with this group
- 4:59Speaker 1: will should I guess is the proper way to frame
- 5:03Speaker 1: it should be able to produce a more functional offensive line.
- 5:11Speaker 2: When they play the Bears on Monday Night Football okay
- 5:16Speaker 2: so let's get to Saquon Barkley and.
- 5:23Speaker 1: His status at this point, Nick Sirianni said it's still
- 5:25Speaker 1: early in the day, still early in the day where
- 5:27Speaker 1: we are right now. I'll get with those guys later
- 5:30Speaker 1: today as far as where everything is, especially us having
- 5:33Speaker 1: a long week.
- 5:34Speaker 2: They were off today.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Everything got started a little bit later, so we'll see
- 5:38Speaker 1: as the week progresses. Saquon Barkley, of course, suffered what
- 5:44Speaker 1: looked to be, I believe, a stinger on the first
- 5:47Speaker 1: play of the game.
- 5:48Speaker 2: You saw him have to use a cowboy collar.
- 5:52Speaker 1: To kind of combat the nerve and all the aggravation
- 5:58Speaker 1: that's in that shoulder arm area. And he didn't play
- 6:03Speaker 1: the remainder of the first half, played just a handful
- 6:07Speaker 1: of snaps in the second half.
- 6:08Speaker 2: He caught an 11-yard pass. I think he had a
- 6:11Speaker 2: carry as well, but he didn't look quite right.
- 6:14Speaker 1: And you want to make sure that you're checking off
- 6:18Speaker 1: all your boxes there with your with the player, making
- 6:22Speaker 1: sure everything checks out medically and you're doing what you
- 6:26Speaker 1: need to do to ensure that player safety is at
- 6:32Speaker 1: the forefront here. And the Eagles really, just look at
- 6:35Speaker 1: Jonathan Grenard and how they're approaching, how they've approached his injury.
- 6:39Speaker 2: They're certainly a team that is.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Really, they really believe in, you know, recovery and trying
- 6:50Speaker 1: to make sure that you're not rushing anyone back and
- 6:53Speaker 1: taking all the proper precautions depending on on the injury
- 6:58Speaker 1: but it is still really early in the week the
- 6:59Speaker 1: injury just happened yesterday we'll have to wait and see
- 7:02Speaker 1: what what it all entails whether or not Saquon will
- 7:06Speaker 1: be able to go Monday night whatever the case is
- 7:09Speaker 1: they do have a longer week and let's look at
- 7:12Speaker 1: Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley I thought Tank Bigsby did
- 7:16Speaker 1: some good things he ran hard He runs with a
- 7:19Speaker 1: mean streak. He carried a pile around the goal line,
- 7:23Speaker 1: and he was able to finish with a touchdown. I've
- 7:27Speaker 1: told you this before.
- 7:28Speaker 2: And I'm going to reiterate this.
- 7:31Speaker 1: He runs with an urgency and a desperation, and that's
- 7:34Speaker 1: the best way that I can describe it. And I
- 7:37Speaker 1: think watching him against the Titans maybe puts things into
- 7:40Speaker 1: perspective and illustrates it that way.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Hopefully it resonates when you watch him run.
- 7:46Speaker 1: You may have thought to yourself, yeah, that's That's what
- 7:48Speaker 1: DiCicco was talking about, the urgency and the desperation where
- 7:51Speaker 1: he just refuses.
- 7:52Speaker 2: To go down.
- 7:53Speaker 1: He fights for every blade of grass. I know that
- 7:55Speaker 1: sounds cliche, but really a fun player to watch. He's
- 7:59Speaker 1: a good teammate. You often hear Nick Ceriani tout I
- 8:03Speaker 1: tout him for being a team-first player. He is just
- 8:07Speaker 1: a really fun personality as well. I get the sense
- 8:10Speaker 1: that he's sort of beloved by teammates. I always see
- 8:14Speaker 1: him conversing with all different position groups, and he just
- 8:17Speaker 1: has sort of a personality that you gravitate to. I
- 8:21Speaker 1: would imagine just talking to him, it seems that way.
- 8:25Speaker 1: But I thought he did some good things. Clearly the
- 8:28Speaker 1: offensive line, allowing pressure and the running backs were getting
- 8:33Speaker 1: hit before they were able to really get going, which
- 8:36Speaker 1: stalled their momentum. That's a problem. And that was a
- 8:38Speaker 1: problem in week one. The only way that you can
- 8:41Speaker 1: sort of work through that is you bank on continuity
- 8:44Speaker 1: with your offensive line. You bank on being able to
- 8:48Speaker 1: maybe scheme it up a little differently, but it's been
- 8:51Speaker 1: tough sledding on the ground, whether it's Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby,
- 8:55Speaker 1: or Will Shipley. And that's something that you may look
- 8:58Speaker 1: at the numbers and say to yourself, Well, it doesn't
- 9:01Speaker 1: look like Tank did a whole lot.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Why is Andrew talking about him in this light?
- 9:05Speaker 1: But, I mean, there wasn't a lot of room to run,
- 9:09Speaker 1: and I thought the tenacity in which he showed under
- 9:12Speaker 1: those circumstances, battling and taking on an expanded workload when
- 9:17Speaker 1: he probably went into that game not really expecting that,
- 9:19Speaker 1: I think that speaks volumes to the way that he prepares.
- 9:23Speaker 1: And with Will Shipley, if you go back to that
- 9:25Speaker 1: Darius Cooper touchdown, look at his pass pro.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Look at his blitz pickup on that.
- 9:31Speaker 1: He stood in there, picks up the linebacker, stands in,
- 9:36Speaker 1: and allows Jalen some time to get the football out
- 9:41Speaker 1: of his hands.
- 9:42Speaker 2: It finds Darius Cooper.
- 9:43Speaker 1: But I've noticed that in the first two weeks, Will
- 9:46Speaker 1: Shipley's had some moments where he has done some quality
- 9:51Speaker 1: things in blitz pickup. That's something that he's worked diligently on.
- 9:55Speaker 1: I've talked to him about that. Last summer, I asked
- 9:59Speaker 1: Kevin Petullo about it. that, and it is something that
- 10:03Speaker 1: you can see the progression in his game. I don't
- 10:07Speaker 1: know that you would consider him exactly the most proficient,
- 10:11Speaker 1: but I think of the running backs that the Eagles have,
- 10:13Speaker 1: of those three, I think Will is probably the the
- 10:18Speaker 1: best at it. And you can see by the snap,
- 10:21Speaker 1: by the snap share, he out snapped tank Bixby. I,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and a lot of it has to do with situational
- 10:26Speaker 1: and he's a third down running back. He can catch
- 10:28Speaker 1: the football. There weren't a lot of, there weren't a
- 10:31Speaker 1: lot of running lanes for him either. And you just
- 10:35Speaker 1: look at the averages and I, and I read them
- 10:37Speaker 1: out for you. I think we'll had 3.4 yards per attempt.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Tank Bixby maybe had 2.5 yards. Saquon was really low
- 10:46Speaker 1: as well. Maybe he had a two seven. But I mean,
- 10:48Speaker 1: like those are paltry numbers. And so it just really
- 10:52Speaker 1: underscores the importance of this offensive line being able to
- 10:56Speaker 1: restore the dominance that they once had. Get some push
- 10:59Speaker 1: at the line of scrimmage and set the tone. And
- 11:02Speaker 1: until that happens, you're going to kind of see it.
- 11:05Speaker 1: I don't even want to say a disjointed offense, but
- 11:07Speaker 1: right now what you're seeing is Jalen Hurts having to
- 11:09Speaker 1: put the offense on his back. And it kind of
- 11:12Speaker 1: reminds me of the way that Josh Allen has to
- 11:14Speaker 1: do things for the Buffalo Bills. It's tough to win
- 11:17Speaker 1: that way. It's tough to sustain winning that way, I
- 11:21Speaker 1: should say. You need a team, a collective effort. It
- 11:25Speaker 1: has to be all three phases working in unison, and
- 11:28Speaker 1: that's in a perfect world. And I think Jalen Hurts
- 11:30Speaker 1: deserves a lot of credit for willing the Eagles to
- 11:33Speaker 1: victory in both of those games where if you don't
- 11:36Speaker 1: get that kind of performance out of your quarterback, maybe
- 11:39Speaker 1: you're 1-1.
- 11:40Speaker 2: You might be 0-2.
- 11:43Speaker 1: And so you want to see the offensive line be
- 11:46Speaker 1: able to hold up their end. And I think if
- 11:50Speaker 1: you're able to establish some semblance of a running game,
- 11:52Speaker 1: it's going to ultimately open things up. But if for
- 11:55Speaker 1: some reason Saquon Barkley is to miss a little bit
- 11:59Speaker 1: of time or maybe they put him on a pitch
- 12:01Speaker 1: count perhaps, well, then you're going to see.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley.
- 12:05Speaker 1: And in case those are wondering, you have Damian Pierce
- 12:08Speaker 1: on the practice squad and Carson Steele is on the
- 12:11Speaker 1: practice squad as well as Jaden Blue. So they have
- 12:15Speaker 1: a number of bodies there if they do, in fact,
- 12:17Speaker 1: need to do a– game day elevation but we're not
- 12:21Speaker 1: there yet we're still really early in the week we're
- 12:23Speaker 1: going to learn more as things continue fall.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Is the season where everyone gets busier more calls more
