- 0:00Hi, everyone. This is Lucas Voss with Becker's
- 0:02Healthcare. Thanks so much for tuning in to
- 0:04the Becker's Healthcare podcast series. It's great to
- 0:06have you. We're talking about healthcare transformation, fostering
- 0:10the next era of care delivery today, and
- 0:12this is going to be very interesting. I
- 0:13have Brahim Santos on today. He's The US
- 0:16segment leader for health care at Schneider Electric.
- 0:19Brahim, it's great to have you. Thanks for
- 0:20being here. Yeah. Thank you, Lucas. It's great
- 0:22to be here. It really is. Absolutely.
- 0:24I do wanna start us off with just
- 0:26a really brief introduction. I know I introduced
- 0:28your title, but give us an overview over
- 0:30what Schneider Electric does what you do. Yeah.
- 0:32No. No. I really appreciate that. It's funny.
- 0:35I always say that I feel as though
- 0:37a lot of people work with us and
- 0:38have no idea that they do. Right? So
- 0:40here at Schneider Electric, we specialize in everything
- 0:44that has to do with,
- 0:46electricity, if you will, and the electrification of
- 0:48major institutions, and especially in this case, health
- 0:50care. Right? So whether or not it's taking
- 0:52power into it to that building and distributing
- 0:55it, as well as from a technological standpoint,
- 0:58being an energy technology leader and monitoring and
- 1:01controlling it to the nth degree, if you
- 1:03will. We we cover all those aspects with
- 1:05the varying solutions that we offer. Certainly an
- 1:08important topic as well. And you dove into
- 1:10some of this at an absolutely fantastic session.
- 1:12I got to see a little bit of
- 1:14it, at our CEO CFO roundtable in Chicago
- 1:17here a couple of weeks back. You had
- 1:18a breakfast session. Lots of folks attended that.
- 1:20Can you share a little bit about what
- 1:22you talked about, the topic, what your goals
- 1:24were? Just a little bit about that session.
- 1:27Sure. You know, it it was,
- 1:29of course, we're super appreciative of the opportunity,
- 1:31and it proved to be fruitful for ourselves
- 1:33and who I I believe the audience members,
- 1:35the the institutions themselves.
- 1:37So we understand that we're on the precipice
- 1:40of something different when it comes to technology,
- 1:42especially that in health care. Right? We're in
- 1:44a technology rev revolution, if you will. But
- 1:46with that comes some intricacies of ultimately how
- 1:49to design and deploy it. And we understand
- 1:51that that's probably a little there's some ambiguity
- 1:54in the sense of institutions. No matter who
- 1:56they are, there's a shared experience of not
- 1:58quite understanding how to, again, totally design it
- 2:01and deploy what the overall intent is. So
- 2:04we really wanted to have this workshop
- 2:05to take ourselves,
- 2:07you know, so, an owner, and and we
- 2:09wanted to to get together and ex express
- 2:12our experiences.
- 2:13And then from there, also get some feedback
- 2:15and learn from the audience as to what
- 2:18they're expecting. And, ultimately,
- 2:19we all leave the little little bit more
- 2:21enlightened without having to start from scratch. Right?
- 2:24Yeah. Absolutely. And I got to peek into
- 2:26the room just a little bit, and I
- 2:28saw That is true. Yeah. Charts
- 2:30and word clouds and lots of great flip
- 2:33charts. So there was a lot of participation.
- 2:35There's a lot of workshopping going on. Can
- 2:37you tell us a little bit about who
- 2:40was at the workshop, what you guys were
- 2:42doing, and and and some of the use
- 2:43cases that you were working on?
- 2:46Sure. For sure. So, you know, with STARS,
- 2:48ourselves, Schneider Electric, you know, we were we
- 2:50were representing there. Then we also brought in
- 2:52one of our owners.
- 2:54You know, she's a leader within IT and
- 2:57specifically with a major project deployment.
- 2:59So when it came to us as contributors,
- 3:01that that was that group. And then in
- 3:03the audience, there was, you know, which I
- 3:06really kind of it was something I will
- 3:08admit, Lucas, that at first, you know, not
- 3:10knowing who was gonna be in the audience
- 3:12or how how you selected them, you know,
- 3:14it was a little nerve wracking, but it
- 3:15actually really proved to be
- 3:17be just very honest, if you will. Right?
- 3:19So,
- 3:20we had, varying institutions that your organization
- 3:23selected.
- 3:24They came in. They they didn't know fully
- 3:26know what to expect.
- 3:28But, in in the end, it it definitely
- 3:30was a a a mix of individuals who
- 3:33really wanted to learn. And, again, from those
- 3:34institutions,
- 3:35they were CFOs and,
- 3:38CEOs of of their organization. So it was
- 3:41some really, powerful leaders who wanted to understand
- 3:44a little bit more of the nerdy aspects
- 3:46that we at Schneider, you know, offer. Yeah.
- 3:49Nerdy is a good point for me because
- 3:50we're we're gonna hop into some of this
- 3:52nerdiness right now, but we certainly discussed at
- 3:54the session as well.
- 3:56But we talk quite a bit about
- 3:58siloed systems,
- 3:59EHRs,
- 4:00like, there's room temperature controls, etcetera.
- 4:02Who typically owns these processes of of bringing
- 4:05all of this together in a hospital setting?
- 4:08Who oversees that, and and what are you
- 4:10seeing there in that space?
- 4:12So yeah. For sure. I I think for
- 4:13one, often, it it's very siloed, right, the
- 4:16approach.
- 4:17So, you know, you'll have different,
- 4:20offers or different products that kinda, for lack
- 4:23of a better term, they stay in their
- 4:24lane with the personnel that uses them.
- 4:27It's always thought that, hey. We'd love for
- 4:29these systems to come together and work, you
- 4:32know, you know, work in in this ecosystem
- 4:34that that is this, health care space. But,
- 4:36again, too often, they're designed and deployed in
- 4:39a siloed manner.
- 4:40So with that, that was part of the
- 4:42reason why we organized,
- 4:44this workshop
- 4:45was to really illustrate how maybe if you
- 4:47don't typically work with a given platform,
- 4:51you your input is actually needed. Right? So
- 4:54if you take these, EMRs, as you said,
- 4:56you know, for me, coming from a facilities
- 4:58technical background,
- 4:59I didn't really play in the lane of
- 5:01EMRs too much. Right? But actually, when you
- 5:04take some of these more traditional facility
- 5:07offers and then you actually allow them to
- 5:10speak with EMRs,
- 5:12now we have knowledge
- 5:13of when rooms are open or when they
- 5:15could become open. So now the synergy just
- 5:18just provides more efficiency
- 5:20within that healthcare space that ultimately leads to
- 5:23better patient care. So, yeah, it's, it it's
- 5:26it's definitely,
- 5:28it's, you know, to your to your question,
- 5:30it's like, who who's involved?
- 5:32Again, there's a select group of people in
- 5:34the beginning, but I think from this workshop,
- 5:36it was definitely identified and realized that we
- 5:38need to have more people involved, right, to
- 5:40come to the table and discuss the overall
- 5:43intent.
- 5:44Do you feel like that that was one
- 5:46of the biggest takeaways for folks is that
- 5:48there just needs to be a broader conversation
- 5:50for people to come together, different departments,
- 5:53different aspects of the conversation?
- 5:58Main things that folks took took away from
- 6:00the discussion?
- 6:01Yeah. No. I I really do. I think
- 6:03that was ultimately achieved. And I can give
- 6:05you, you know, a little bit of an
- 6:06example of it in the sense that we
- 6:08have one of the CFOs,
- 6:09you know, come come up to us at
- 6:11the end, and and she stated that, you
- 6:13know, I wanna be involved in this. And
- 6:15I I think, historically, we think of the
- 6:17CFO as either the person beginning to approve,
- 6:20maybe check-in during the process to make sure
- 6:23from a very linear
- 6:24monetary standpoint, we're we're in alignment or we
- 6:26need to get back on pace or whatever
- 6:28the case may be. But she made it
- 6:30very clear that she is not just concerned
- 6:32about the number. She is she wants to
- 6:35to be part of it so she can
- 6:36kinda understand
- 6:37what it's used for. I think that's important.
- 6:40Right? If something comes across someone's desk and
- 6:42they don't have an understanding
- 6:43of what it is, maybe that's their input
- 6:45in understanding what the overall mission of this
- 6:48synergy is so that they can also be
- 6:50a proponent of it and back it. Right?
- 6:52So, yeah, I that was definitely,
- 6:54something that was identified,
- 6:56through conversation. Because part of our workshop, Lucas,
- 6:59was to really kinda set up, like, a
- 7:02a a scenario and have them,
- 7:04you know, work as a group. We had
- 7:06three tables, and and they worked as a
- 7:08group to really kind of identify who they
- 7:11believe to be part of these technological
- 7:13deployments. And it was great to see because
- 7:16we have these individuals that don't do this
- 7:19on a a daily basis to get into
- 7:20the weeds. Right? They're responsible for a lot
- 7:22of things
- 7:23and to to see them and to see
- 7:25all the brains working and identifies. And things
- 7:28were uncovered and realized for sure. Yeah. And
- 7:30I think that that's a great part about
- 7:32an open discussion about bringing folks together in
- 7:34this setting is the fact that there are
- 7:35some uncoverings happening. There are some conversations that
- 7:38normally don't, which is fantastic.
- 7:40Rahim, this is obviously your business, but you're
- 7:43also very passionate about this. This is something
- 7:45that you take to heart. You're very passionate
- 7:46about technology, about the role of technology specifically
- 7:49in health care and health care environments.
- 7:51And we've had conversations about this as well,
- 7:53but I'd love to ask you, what are
- 7:55some of those trends
- 7:57that you're going to see
- 7:59evolve, and how do you see the role
- 8:01of technology
- 8:03also evolve in creating that more connected and
- 8:05efficient hospital or environment here moving into 2026,
- 8:09but also certainly beyond?
- 8:10No. For sure. I mean, look, it's right.
- 8:13Can't have any kind of discussion without even
- 8:15mentioning the two letters of AI. Right? It's
- 8:17it's real. It's true. But if there's one
- 8:20thing just holistically
- 8:22that I think is gonna come out of
- 8:24it and we're gonna see in the coming
- 8:25year and and years to come soon after
- 8:28is
- 8:29there's a lot of conversations about the front
- 8:31of house aspect of how AI can work
- 8:34with the directly clinically impacting,
- 8:38platforms, if you will. But there is a
- 8:40huge opportunity to to peer behind that curtain,
- 8:43right, and understand that there's a lot of
- 8:47offers that that work with the facility
- 8:49operation aspect of these institutions.
- 8:52And that said, when we think about technology
- 8:55and how we can leverage technology to become
- 8:57more efficient
- 8:58with that back of house and facilities focused
- 9:02type operation,
- 9:03it's going to translate
- 9:05into, again, better patient outcomes.
- 9:07So I really do believe
- 9:10that that's something that is gonna be identified
- 9:12and seen, and you're gonna see a lot
- 9:14more focus,
- 9:15with, again, that kind of facilities back of
- 9:17house. And that's something that we at Schneider,
- 9:20we we pride ourselves on. I have a
- 9:22whole team of, of, folks that are specialized
- 9:25in health care.
- 9:26We we want to get immersed and understand
- 9:30the, health care institutions
- 9:31to its fullest so that we can work
- 9:33backwards to help them with their overall mission
- 9:35of patient care.
- 9:37I see an AI workshop on the horizon
- 9:39with lots of chart and lots of participation.
- 9:43Yeah. Yeah. There you go. It's great. It's
- 9:45so great to have you. Thanks for being
- 9:47here and spending some time with us. Thank
- 9:49you, Lucas. Always a pleasure. And And we
- 9:51also want to thank our podcast sponsor, Schneider
