- 0:23Speaker 1: dot org. Golf dot Breck dot org. Wednesday, NFL League
- 0:27Speaker 1: year officially began, and Wednesday saw another New Orleans Saint
- 0:32Speaker 1: player sign elsewhere, of course, we saw Will Harris the
- 0:35Speaker 1: safety go to Washington, Paulson Adebo cornerback up in New
- 0:40Speaker 1: York with the Giants now, and the one that came
- 0:43Speaker 1: about on Wednesday. Candidly, I guess is a little bit
- 0:49Speaker 1: of a surprise, because Mark was Valdez Scantling was due
- 0:58Speaker 1: was like sitting at home eating she right, I mean
- 1:02Speaker 1: he was in Buffalo and did nothing in Buffalo, played
- 1:08Speaker 1: six games for the Bills, caught two balls on nine targets,
- 1:12Speaker 1: two catches for twenty six yards. Like Mark was Valadas Scantling,
- 1:17Speaker 1: who again was a good player early in his career,
- 1:20Speaker 1: the four seasons he spent in Green Bay, went to
- 1:22Speaker 1: Kansas City for two years, won a couple of Super
- 1:25Speaker 1: Bowls in twenty two and twenty three with Kansas City.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Then he goes to Buffalo and I get it. You know,
- 1:32Speaker 1: with the depth Buffalo had a receiver and what they added,
- 1:35Speaker 1: it was a little hard for him to get targets.
- 1:38Speaker 1: But my goodness, he comes to the Saints and kaboom.
- 1:43Speaker 1: I mean he became the stretch the field deep threat
- 1:46Speaker 1: for New Orleans. You realized, do you know what Marcus
- 1:48Speaker 1: Valdas Scantling's yard per catch average was in the eight
- 1:52Speaker 1: games he played in New Orleans. It's not gonna surprise
- 1:56Speaker 1: you want to tell you the number because it's a
- 1:57Speaker 1: big number, But like when I say it, it's still like,
- 1:59Speaker 1: oh my god, Valdas Scantling averaged twenty two yards per reception.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Like eventually you're gonna mix in one of those like
- 2:10Speaker 1: bubble screens that gets you know, it goes for a
- 2:13Speaker 1: loss of three, right, I mean, it's incredible. Of course,
- 2:16Speaker 1: the seventy one yarder was his long. Thirteen of his
- 2:22Speaker 1: seventeen receptions, thirteen of the seventeen went for a first
- 2:26Speaker 1: down or a touchdown. Right. He was incredible, like drinking
- 2:31Speaker 1: from the fountain of youth. All of a sudden in
- 2:33Speaker 1: New Orleans. And so Seattle, which just traded Dk Metcalf,
- 2:39Speaker 1: turned around and paid Marcus Valdez Scantling five million bucks.
- 2:43Speaker 1: So a one year, five point five million dollar deal.
- 2:49Speaker 1: The Seahawks gave Marcus Valdas Scantling. And I get it
- 2:52Speaker 1: for Seattle. When you're looking at a guy who are
- 2:56Speaker 1: a team there. You just signed Sam Darnold, big deal
- 3:00Speaker 1: bringing in Sam Darnold. You traded away Metcalf. The trade,
- 3:04Speaker 1: I mean trade away Gino. So they need to get
- 3:07Speaker 1: weapons there in Seattle. And here's a guy that showed
- 3:10Speaker 1: he's still very capable in the NFL. The odd thing
- 3:16Speaker 1: about this for me from New Orleans perspective is this
- 3:21Speaker 1: is the kind of guy you want to keep, you know.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I went checked going into twenty twenty four. So this
- 3:32Speaker 1: is while Chris Olave is still healthy, Rashid Shaheed is
- 3:36Speaker 1: still healthy. This is going into the twenty twenty four season.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Pro Football Focus ranked the receiving cores in the NFL
- 3:46Speaker 1: one to thirty two. New Orleans was twenty fourth that
- 3:52Speaker 1: was with Alave in Shiheed. So regardless of what we
- 3:54Speaker 1: think Alave being a former first round pick, Shaheed your
- 3:57Speaker 1: deep ball ability, the bottom mine is you're still looking
- 4:00Speaker 1: the dudes like bub means going into last year, trying
- 4:03Speaker 1: to count on them. I mean, you come through that
- 4:05Speaker 1: season a year ago in my goodness, the New Orleans
- 4:10Speaker 1: Saints receiving court. Not only were they a mashing with
- 4:12Speaker 1: the injuries to Alave and Shaheed, but on top of that,
- 4:15Speaker 1: you just weren't productive. And you're talking about guys like
- 4:18Speaker 1: Cedric Wilson, Mason Tipton. I feel like the scene in
- 4:22Speaker 1: Major League when the guys sit at the coffee shop,
- 4:25Speaker 1: you know, on the construction site, they're reading through the roster.
- 4:28Speaker 1: What these guys never heard. I mean, that's what it
- 4:30Speaker 1: feels like looking at these receivers last year. So you
- 4:33Speaker 1: have a guy who's a two time Super Bowl champion,
- 4:37Speaker 1: been in the league for six years, you pull him
- 4:40Speaker 1: off the couch, he's a productive player for you, and hey,
- 4:43Speaker 1: you let him walk. I mean, this is the type
- 4:45Speaker 1: of thing I got asked the question because I've pretty
- 4:47Speaker 1: much lambasted the Saints for what they've done in free
- 4:49Speaker 1: agency so far. And I think justifiably so. And I
- 4:53Speaker 1: got to ask the question, what would you like for
- 4:54Speaker 1: them to have done? Well? I think I've spelled this
- 4:58Speaker 1: out pretty clearly. I wanted the New Orleans Saints to
- 5:02Speaker 1: release Derek Carr and eat the dead cap hit this year.
- 5:06Speaker 1: That would have required manipulating a lot of other contracts,
- 5:09Speaker 1: but you get out from from underneath the biggest albatross
- 5:12Speaker 1: around your neck, which now you will carry this year
- 5:15Speaker 1: and twenty twenty six and twenty twenty seven. But what
- 5:21Speaker 1: I wanted them to do was create team friendly deals
- 5:27Speaker 1: with players like Marcus Valdez Scantling. One year, five point
- 5:31Speaker 1: five for Marcus Valdez Scantling seems like a really good
- 5:34Speaker 1: deal when you're getting a love and Shaheed back. Okay,
- 5:36Speaker 1: and I get it, Rashi Chiheed, deep threat guy. That's
- 5:40Speaker 1: the role Valdez Scantling played. You can tell me you
- 5:42Speaker 1: can't use depth at receiver. Come on. I mean, we
- 5:46Speaker 1: talked about Justin Reid in a vacuum. I'm very excited
- 5:49Speaker 1: about Justin Reid. He's a good player. I mean it's
- 5:52Speaker 1: a tackling machine. He's averaged like eighty tackles the season
- 5:56Speaker 1: throughout his NFL career Houston, Kansas City and won a
- 5:59Speaker 1: Super Bowl in Kansas City. Like there's a lot to
- 6:01Speaker 1: like a local guy bringing him home. I like in
- 6:04Speaker 1: a vacuum, like Justin Reid a lot. I'm fired he
- 6:07Speaker 1: gets to come home. He tweeted about coming home. Same
- 6:09Speaker 1: thing with Devon gotchall Like with the three year, thirty
- 6:14Speaker 1: plus million dollar contract for Justin Reid is the thing
- 6:16Speaker 1: where you go, why would you restructure contracts to free
- 6:20Speaker 1: up cap space to bring in a guy that's not
- 6:23Speaker 1: a dramatic improvement from who you had? And Will Harris
- 6:26Speaker 1: who got a two year, eight million dollar deal in Washington. Like,
- 6:31Speaker 1: if I let me phrase it to you this way,
- 6:33Speaker 1: if I told you you could have some cap relief
- 6:39Speaker 1: moving forward and have Will Harris on a two year,
- 6:46Speaker 1: eight million dollar deal, or you're running it back in
- 6:49Speaker 1: New Orleans this year, restructured a bunch of deals to
- 6:53Speaker 1: free up cap space to bring in Justin Reid, Like
- 6:58Speaker 1: to resign Chase Young, resigned you on Johnson these big contracts,
- 7:03Speaker 1: what would you rather? Because the reality remains with the
- 7:08Speaker 1: moves the Saints have made to this point, you're running
- 7:11Speaker 1: it back with effectively the same roster from a team
- 7:14Speaker 1: that was a five win team a year ago. And
- 7:17Speaker 1: I know gum smack and Mickey is gonna sit there
- 7:19Speaker 1: and tell you it was the injuries. Would he say
- 7:21Speaker 1: look past the results. I need you to get that
- 7:24Speaker 1: sound by because I need that perpetuity. You better put
- 7:25Speaker 1: that on a button. I'm dead serious because that just
- 7:28Speaker 1: like Ellen Moore muse, I'm gonna wear that SoundBite out Ellen,
- 7:32Speaker 1: like I told you, they are gonna put look past
- 7:35Speaker 1: the results on Mickey Loomis's tombstone, not as literal tombstone
- 7:40Speaker 1: on his career tombstone. So you're running it back with
- 7:46Speaker 1: all the same guys and even if injury an injuries
- 7:48Speaker 1: no doubt played a role, but a healthy roster for
- 7:52Speaker 1: the Saints last year. What are you seven win team?
- 7:56Speaker 1: You're you're continuing to mortgage your future for a team
- 7:59Speaker 1: that's not going to compete. That's the contention that that
- 8:02Speaker 1: I'll continue to make. So if you're looking for guys
- 8:06Speaker 1: that could be capable players for you on affordable deals,
- 8:11Speaker 1: Will Harris is one of them. Mark was valid as
- 8:13Speaker 1: scantling one year, five and a half million in sal
- 8:16Speaker 1: that's one that you'd love to have kept. What doesn't
- 8:20Speaker 1: make sense. Is given Juwan Johnson thirty million bucks, given
- 8:23Speaker 1: Chase hung fifty one million bucks, why you're not close
- 8:28Speaker 1: to competing. It just goes to continue to underscore the
- 8:31Speaker 1: disconnect between what the rest of the football world thinks
- 8:35Speaker 1: and those few people in the executive offices on airline
- 8:38Speaker 1: Drive who really believe. Again, it's not words. I always
- 8:42Speaker 1: say actions speak louder than words. Their actions are showing
- 8:46Speaker 1: you they think they're a contender, and literally no one
- 8:50Speaker 1: else in the football love and world agrees with them.
- 8:53Speaker 1: But their actions continue to map toward that, much to
- 8:57Speaker 1: their detriment, and it's going to continue to cost them
- 8:59Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five and twenty twenty six and beyond.
- 9:03Speaker 1: So you got to get receiver help, and you're not
- 9:05Speaker 1: going into the season with a Lave and Shaheed and
- 9:07Speaker 1: that's it. Mason Tipton and Cedric Wilson and Dante Pettis
- 9:11Speaker 1: like that, ain't it. So the fact that you resigned
- 9:14Speaker 1: Juwan Johnson, you've got Foster Morrow back, You've re signed
- 9:19Speaker 1: Chase Young, You're probably looking at nine at receiver. For
- 9:24Speaker 1: all the different conversations we've had about the possibility of
- 9:26Speaker 1: Tyler Warren there, you're having Juwan Johnson and Foster Morrow.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Probably means you're not looking at Tyler Warren at nine,
- 9:32Speaker 1: not exclusively, probably, which means like if Teteroa McMillan from
- 9:36Speaker 1: Arizona's there at nine, I gotta think that's probably the
- 9:39Speaker 1: pick at this point. But when you have an endless
- 9:43Speaker 1: amount of needs, anything could be the pick. Mark was
- 9:45Speaker 1: Valdez Scantling headed the Seattle one year, five million dollars
