- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Wednesday.
- 0:16It's the middle of the week, the 6th of December.
- 0:20And as we head toward Christmas, did you know today is actually
- 0:23Saint Nicholas Day? No, this is not Saint Nick
- 0:26Santa, but this is the Saint Nicholas who died on this day.
- 0:31But he was born in 270 AD in Turkey and he is the generous
- 0:37St. who sold all his things and gave it to the poor and he
- 0:41inspired the modern story of Santa Claus.
- 0:44In fact, one of the the greatest known stories about Saint
- 0:48Nicholas is there was a poor father whose three daughters
- 0:52were hoping to get married but he had no money for a dowry and
- 0:55each night they used to take off their shoes and put them by the
- 0:57fire to dry out. And the story, the legend goes
- 1:01that as the the three daughters put their shoes beside the fire,
- 1:05he made gold appear in these shoes so that the father would
- 1:08have a dowry to pay each of the prospective husbands so that
- 1:12they would increase their chance of marriage.
- 1:15And so people who do celebrate Saint Nicholas Day, they put
- 1:19little treats in people's shoes. If you'd like to.
- 1:23That is something you could do today.
- 1:25Put some treats in people's shoes in a way that they won't
- 1:27stand on them, and then get chocolate soaked socks at some
- 1:30point during the day and curse Saint Nicholas's memory,
- 1:34although they probably won't have a clue what's going on.
- 1:36So Saint Nick's Day isn't that cool?
- 1:39Isn't that cool? What else is cool is that we
- 1:43continue to read through the book of Isaiah and we are
- 1:46reading the next chapter in the series of chapters where God is
- 1:52giving His people instructions as they have returned to the
- 1:55promised land and are trying to work out how do we live as God's
- 1:59people. And today he is saying don't
- 2:02follow the injustices happening around you, repent of your sin
- 2:06because God is renewing His covenants and restoring His
- 2:09land. So without any further ado, let
- 2:13us read together Isaiah chapter 59.
- 2:28Listen. The Lord's arm is not too weak
- 2:31to save you, nor is his ear too deaf to hear your call.
- 2:35It's your sins that have cut you off from God.
- 2:38Because of your sins, He has turned away and will not listen
- 2:42anymore. Your hands are the hands of
- 2:44murderers and your fingers are filthy with sin.
- 2:49Your lips are full of lies and your mouth spews corruption.
- 2:54No one cares about being fair and honest.
- 2:57The people's lawsuits are based on lies.
- 2:59They conceive evil deeds and then give birth to sin.
- 3:05They hatch deadly snakes and weave spiders webs.
- 3:09Whoever eats their eggs will die.
- 3:11Whoever cracks them will hatch a Viper.
- 3:14Their webs can't be made into clothing, and nothing they do is
- 3:18productive. All their activity is filled
- 3:21with sin and violence as their trademark.
- 3:25Their feet run to do evil and they rush to commit murder.
- 3:29They think only about sinning. Misery and destruction always
- 3:34follow them. They don't know where to find
- 3:36peace or what it means to be just and good.
- 3:39They have mapped out crooked roads, and no one who follows
- 3:43them knows a moment's peace. So there is no justice among us.
- 3:49And we know nothing about living, right.
- 3:52We look for light, but find only darkness.
- 3:55We look for bright skies, but walk in gloom.
- 3:59We grope like the blind along a wall, feeling our way, like
- 4:03people without eyes. Even at brightest noon time we
- 4:07stumble as though it were dark among the living.
- 4:10We are like the dead. We growl like hungry bears.
- 4:14We moan like mournful doves. We look for justice, but it
- 4:19never comes. We look for rescue, but it is
- 4:23far away from us, for our sins are piled up before God and
- 4:28testify against us. Yes, we know what sinners we
- 4:32are. We know we have rebelled and
- 4:34have denied the Lord. We have turned our backs on our
- 4:38God. We know how unfair and
- 4:41oppressive we have been carefully planning our deceitful
- 4:45lies. Our courts oppose the righteous
- 4:48and justice is nowhere to be found.
- 4:51Truth stumbles in the streets and honesty has been outlawed.
- 4:58Yes, truth is gone and anyone who renounces evil is attacked.
- 5:03The Lord looked and was displeased to find there was no
- 5:07justice. He was amazed to see that no one
- 5:11intervened to help the oppressed, so he himself stepped
- 5:16in to save them with his strong arm and his justice sustained
- 5:20him. He put on righteousness as his
- 5:24body armor and placed the helmet of salvation on his head.
- 5:28He clothed himself with the robe of vengeance and wrapped himself
- 5:32in a cloak of divine passion. He will repay his enemies for
- 5:38their evil deeds. His fury will fall on his foes.
- 5:42He will pay them back even to the ends of the earth.
- 5:47In the West, people will respect the name of the Lord.
- 5:51In the East they will glorify him, for he will come like a
- 5:56raging flood tide, driven by the breath of the Lord.
- 6:01The Redeemer will come to Jerusalem to buy back those in
- 6:05Israel who have turned from their sins, says the Lord.
- 6:10And this is my covenant with them, says the Lord.
- 6:14My spirit will not leave them, and neither will these words I
- 6:19have given you. They will be on your lips, and
- 6:22on the lips of your children and your children's children.
- 6:25Forever. I, the Lord, have spoken.
- 6:41You have a different criteria Lord, for the way that you judge
- 6:45the world and us. We can think we're so clever
- 6:50organizing things to benefit ourselves.
- 6:53But here you talk about this self seeking behaviour like we
- 6:59are stumbling around with our eyes blinded in the noonday sun.
- 7:06The true light is your light of compassion and justice, where
- 7:13those who get a rough deal are supported and those whose voices
- 7:19can't be heard are honored and listened to.
- 7:23Help us be the agent of your noonday sun and help us not
- 7:29follow the lead of the world around us, looking after our own
- 7:34interests, groping around in the dark.
- 7:38You are a kind, loving and just God.
- 7:42Shape us to be more and more like you and start that work.
- 7:48Continue that work right now. In our hearts we pray and all of
- 7:54this we ask in the name of Jesus.
- 7:57Amen.
