- 1:58Speaker 5: How you doing, I'm doing very well.
- 1:59Speaker 2: How you day, I'm doing fine?
- 2:01Speaker 5: Thank you super you look pretty good today, Well thank you.
- 2:03Speaker 2: You don't look so bad yourself, Well.
- 2:05Speaker 5: Thank you very much. All right, there we got that
- 2:08Speaker 5: part of.
- 2:09Speaker 1: You doing.
- 2:12Speaker 2: And the show went off the rails from that point. Yes,
- 2:14Speaker 2: So how are things?
- 2:16Speaker 5: They're they're just wonderful.
- 2:17Speaker 2: You're you excited about spring because it's it's coming?
- 2:20Speaker 5: Yes, And I have no faith in groundhogs. Okay, first
- 2:25Speaker 5: of all, they're not even meteorologists. Okay, they're rodents. And
- 2:29Speaker 5: the reason that they give whatever is because whoever is
- 2:32Speaker 5: handling them messed with them and made them get up
- 2:36Speaker 5: earlier than they wanted to, so they figured they'll give
- 2:38Speaker 5: a bad report.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Groundhog's success rates are not very good. I mean, especially
- 2:43Speaker 2: the big one like Punkstani Phil, they're not very good.
- 2:47Speaker 2: We have our own meteorologists, and you.
- 2:49Speaker 5: Know, it's an excuse to have a big breakfast afterwards.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 2:52Speaker 5: That's all it is. And those breakfasts. I have a
- 2:55Speaker 5: few things to say about it.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I bet you do. So what's new? What's new with you?
- 3:02Speaker 1: Well?
- 3:03Speaker 5: I want to talk about the new passion, which is
- 3:07Speaker 5: not even brand new. I've been doing Mediterranean now for
- 3:10Speaker 5: over eight years, and of course I have a history
- 3:13Speaker 5: with weight Watchers for forty seven years and so being
- 3:17Speaker 5: able to give people the tools to help themselves is
- 3:21Speaker 5: really one of the driving forces in my heart, in
- 3:24Speaker 5: my head, what I want people to realize is number one,
- 3:28Speaker 5: Mediterranean is not a diet.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Not a diet.
- 3:31Speaker 5: It is absolutely everything but a diet. And eating healthy
- 3:37Speaker 5: is like giving your body the medicine of staying alive
- 3:42Speaker 5: in a healthy way because we eat fresh, clean, unadulterated
- 3:47Speaker 5: food that doesn't have bad stuff in it. By bad stuff,
- 3:51Speaker 5: I'm talking about chemicals and preservatives, and if you were
- 3:54Speaker 5: to travel to that part of the world, the food
- 3:57Speaker 5: is so remarkably delicious because it doesn't have all of
- 4:01Speaker 5: those additives. And people are amazed at how good they
- 4:06Speaker 5: feel when they go to Italy, they go to Greece wherever,
- 4:10Speaker 5: and that is such a large region in that part
- 4:13Speaker 5: of the world, and we want to do that here
- 4:16Speaker 5: for a larger number of people. Most folks are running
- 4:21Speaker 5: their own personal lost and found department. And what that
- 4:24Speaker 5: means is they lose weight and darn it, then they
- 4:26Speaker 5: find it, and when they find it, they generally find
- 4:30Speaker 5: more than they lost.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the way it works.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Yeah, And then they have to find excuses to explain
- 4:35Speaker 5: why they gain back more than they lost, and that
- 4:38Speaker 5: gets very very old and very boring.
- 4:41Speaker 2: And any physician will tell you that the constant yo
- 4:43Speaker 2: yoing back and forth. You know, you lose thirty, gain forty,
- 4:49Speaker 2: lose forty, gain fifty, that's just as bad if I mean,
- 4:54Speaker 2: you don't want to wish morbid obesity on anyone, but
- 4:58Speaker 2: any doctor will tell you that you pretty much better.
- 5:01Speaker 2: It's harder in your body, the constant change.
- 5:03Speaker 5: It absolutely absolutely because that yo yo effect. And it's
- 5:07Speaker 5: not just a five or ten pound yo yo. It's actually,
- 5:10Speaker 5: as you explain it, it can be thirty, forty, fifty,
- 5:13Speaker 5: one hundred pounds. And you often hear where people lose
- 5:17Speaker 5: ninety and then you're talking to them, well, I gain
- 5:21Speaker 5: back one hundred and twenty five or I gain back
- 5:23Speaker 5: one hundred and fifty. And nothing in this world is
- 5:27Speaker 5: more painful than that experience to lose weight inappropriately and
- 5:32Speaker 5: gain it back, and then where do you go from there?
- 5:35Speaker 5: So when I say that fresh, clean, healthy food is
- 5:40Speaker 5: your medicine, people need to hear that and how that
- 5:43Speaker 5: applies to them. Because on Mediterranean number one, there's nothing
- 5:49Speaker 5: restricted except we want you to eat clean food. We
- 5:52Speaker 5: want you to stop in the supermarket and make sure
- 5:54Speaker 5: that you read the bag of the label. Sometimes the
- 5:57Speaker 5: preservatives that are included in food are such a cobulated word.
- 6:02Speaker 5: I'm maybe not even saying that you want because that
- 6:06Speaker 5: your mouth can't even pronounce it.
- 6:08Speaker 2: If you can't pronounce it, don't put it in your body.
- 6:10Speaker 2: I mean. And all you've got to do is look
- 6:12Speaker 2: at the back of any of these labels and look,
- 6:14Speaker 2: I'm not sitting up on my high horse. I don't
- 6:17Speaker 2: always do what I'm supposed to do, but one of
- 6:21Speaker 2: the things I try to do is I literally I
- 6:24Speaker 2: try to look at a label and say, if I
- 6:27Speaker 2: can't pronounce it, I'm not going to eat it, and
- 6:30Speaker 2: I'm certainly not going to eat it every day.
- 6:33Speaker 5: And if you did it once in a while, okay.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Fine, right, that's moderation.
- 6:37Speaker 5: My point is that people think that they're not going
- 6:41Speaker 5: to come to Mediterranean because it's a diet, and it's
- 6:44Speaker 5: not a diet. And I'm seeing such great success among
- 6:47Speaker 5: the people that are coming to my morning group, and
- 6:50Speaker 5: I don't teach the evening class. There's a former weight
- 6:53Speaker 5: watcher leader by the name of Carmela Crawford, who is
- 6:57Speaker 5: teaching Mediterranean in the evening, and we're over at the
- 7:00Speaker 5: American Job Center on Leon Sullivan Way, And as I
- 7:04Speaker 5: shared with everyone earlier this year, we change locations and
- 7:08Speaker 5: it's a great place, plenty of good parking, and we
- 7:12Speaker 5: want people to come to experience for themselves. It's very affordable.
- 7:16Speaker 5: But more importantly, I want them to understand the benefits,
- 7:20Speaker 5: the long term health benefits. I mean, we're now hearing
- 7:25Speaker 5: that people with dementia and Alzheimer's are beginning to find
- 7:30Speaker 5: ways to clear that fog up with honey and certain
- 7:35Speaker 5: other ingredients added. And that's groundbreaking, but that's natural. That's
- 7:41Speaker 5: a way to do it naturally without using some of
- 7:45Speaker 5: these drugs that are making it worse. And we look
- 7:48Speaker 5: at drugs as the panacea. You know, there are so
- 7:52Speaker 5: many people who are taking the weight loss drugs. But
- 7:55Speaker 5: what happens when that stops? What did you learn? What
- 7:58Speaker 5: did you change? What did you experience that you can
- 8:00Speaker 5: actually say, Okay, now I know what to do. No,
- 8:04Speaker 5: you don't. And that's why eating healthily has such a
- 8:09Speaker 5: powerful impact. And we want people to understand that, not
- 8:13Speaker 5: about dieting. And then somebody's going to chastise you because
- 8:17Speaker 5: this week you gained the pound. You know what you did.
- 8:20Speaker 5: Everybody knows what they do. And when you got a mystery.
- 8:24Speaker 2: When you teach your classes and you kind of reference
- 8:27Speaker 2: that there, you know there were I know that with
- 8:29Speaker 2: the Weight Watchers program, of which you were a part
- 8:31Speaker 2: of for many many years. We're not here to trash
- 8:33Speaker 2: them or anything like that, but no, no, exactly, but
- 8:36Speaker 2: you know there was always like the way in and
- 8:38Speaker 2: so on, and so how do you do you don't
- 8:41Speaker 2: do that with these classes.
- 8:42Speaker 5: We have a way in, but we have a way
- 8:44Speaker 5: in only for one reason, as a personal barometer, so
- 8:48Speaker 5: that you can see what you are doing. It's not
- 8:51Speaker 5: a judgment call, right right, But in the old days,
- 8:55Speaker 5: and I will only speak with love about Weight Watchers
- 8:59Speaker 5: Beak because number one, first and foremost, they helped me
- 9:03Speaker 5: change my life and they showed me a pathway that
- 9:06Speaker 5: I never knew existed. And I did it with food.
- 9:09Speaker 5: I didn't do it with medicine. I used to take
- 9:12Speaker 5: medicine for years. I went to every barriater doctor in
- 9:16Speaker 5: the state of Maryland before I moved to West Virginia,
- 9:20Speaker 5: and every bariatric approach that I used. Yeah, I lost
- 9:25Speaker 5: weight when I was taking the drug. When I didn't
- 9:28Speaker 5: go back to that method, I gained it back because
- 9:32Speaker 5: I didn't learn anything. I didn't know how to eat.
- 9:35Speaker 5: And that statement many people who have weight to lose
- 9:39Speaker 5: say to me, do I look like I don't know
- 9:41Speaker 5: how to eat? Yes, you do know how to eat,
- 9:44Speaker 5: but you don't know how to eat correctly. And that's
- 9:47Speaker 5: that link that we want to offer two people to
- 9:51Speaker 5: show them what they don't know. Everybody thinks they know,
- 9:54Speaker 5: but they don't know.
- 9:55Speaker 2: This is a very good point. We have a texture here.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Listening to the show, text says, have you ever considered
- 10:01Speaker 2: merely taking groups through the grocery stores and help teach
- 10:05Speaker 2: how to read labels and to pick effective foods? Maybe
- 10:07Speaker 2: once or twice a month.
- 10:09Speaker 5: I actually have thought about that. I haven't put it
- 10:12Speaker 5: into action, but I will say thank you because it
- 10:15Speaker 5: is a wonderful idea. Yeah, and instead of meeting, we
- 10:20Speaker 5: could meet at Kroger's or all these or wherever one
- 10:23Speaker 5: would like to go, or we can do it at Walmart.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:26Speaker 5: I mean it's a great idea.
- 10:28Speaker 2: And don't be fooled by something that says low fat
- 10:31Speaker 2: or fat free that could be your biggest enemy sometimes,
- 10:34Speaker 2: or things or that has the word diet.
- 10:36Speaker 5: And the thing on the label that people need.
- 10:40Speaker 2: To turning your microphone off. You keep turning your microphone off,
- 10:46Speaker 2: and you've got a little button under the microphone and
- 10:48Speaker 2: you keep hitting it and turning your microphone.
- 10:50Speaker 5: Oh, we won't make that mistake again.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Go ahead.
- 10:53Speaker 5: The most important thing when we read labels is not
- 10:56Speaker 5: even looking at the fat content. We need to look
- 10:58Speaker 5: at the sugar content ten And if it has more
- 11:02Speaker 5: than five grams of sugar, leave it on the shelf
- 11:04Speaker 5: for somebody else to buy. Don't put it in your cart.
- 11:08Speaker 5: Sugar by the way, and a lot of people don't
- 11:11Speaker 5: know this, but cancer feeds on sugar. I'm learning, and yes,
- 11:18Speaker 5: and I'm I mean that you're learning the hard way.
- 11:21Speaker 5: But of course your prognosis is encouraging. And I want
- 11:25Speaker 5: I pray for your success certainly, and I think that
- 11:28Speaker 5: other people have told you that, oh, you're gonna be successful.
- 11:32Speaker 2: I'm going to be success, But.
- 11:33Speaker 5: People don't know this. People don't know this. And personally,
- 11:38Speaker 5: when I see people who have morbid obesity as part
- 11:42Speaker 5: of their life, I want to say something.
- 11:45Speaker 2: I don't you're doing it again. I am ware that's
- 11:49Speaker 2: right in front of you.
- 11:50Speaker 5: Okay, I'm going to keep my heart up here.
- 11:52Speaker 2: If there's a little little square right in front of you,
- 11:55Speaker 2: oh it says on yes, and you keep hitting.
- 11:57Speaker 5: It, oh well, okay, then.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Gup your elbow. Okay, away from that.
- 12:01Speaker 5: Now everybody knows that technical stuff is in my strong suit.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Well at least you're pretty thank you. There's that. All right,
- 12:08Speaker 2: go ahead, get in and I have another text for you.
- 12:10Speaker 1: But go ahead.
- 12:11Speaker 5: So people, don't you know, people just have so much
- 12:14Speaker 5: to learn. And I worry about all these drugs that
- 12:18Speaker 5: are out there for weight loss. You have to change
- 12:20Speaker 5: your mind about your body and drugs doing that for you.
- 12:24Speaker 5: There's something missing there and I worry about them.
- 12:28Speaker 2: My wife and I were talking about this the other day.
- 12:30Speaker 2: We were on the We don't watch a lot of
- 12:32Speaker 2: TV during the week, but sometimes we'll catch up on
- 12:34Speaker 2: the weekend and I usually have it on some sort
- 12:35Speaker 2: of a news show or whatever. Sure, and just simply
- 12:40Speaker 2: the amount of television commercials that there are. It's one
- 12:45Speaker 2: after another for this pill, not all related to diet,
- 12:48Speaker 2: but I mean for this pill and for that pill.
- 12:51Speaker 2: The commercials are ninety seconds long or two minutes, and
- 12:55Speaker 2: if they're ninety seconds, fifty seconds of that is telling
- 12:58Speaker 2: you the side effects A and and again it could
- 13:01Speaker 2: be for any number of things merely not necessarily related
- 13:04Speaker 2: to diet. Could be any number of things. And I'm
- 13:06Speaker 2: a big believer, and I don't really know a whole
- 13:09Speaker 2: lot in this world, but I'm a big believer in
- 13:11Speaker 2: not a single thing is going to be helped by
- 13:14Speaker 2: putting more medicine. Now I'm not I understand people have
- 13:18Speaker 2: to take medications, but but I mean, I'm simply not
- 13:23Speaker 2: going to be that guy. I'm fifty five now, I'm
- 13:26Speaker 2: not going to be that guy at sixty five who
- 13:27Speaker 2: starts out every day by taking fifteen pills. Not happening.
- 13:31Speaker 5: And I respect, but and some people simply think that
- 13:36Speaker 5: drugs are the answer, and if anything, they're the stumbling block.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Yeah, and that stumbling block is huge. And one pill
- 13:44Speaker 2: begets another pill. And so we're going to give you
- 13:47Speaker 2: this pill because this is wrong with you. And then
- 13:49Speaker 2: we're going to give you this pill because that'll counteract
- 13:51Speaker 2: this pill. And you know you're spending all your time
- 13:54Speaker 2: at your give.
- 13:56Speaker 5: The doctor if they just read all the side effects
- 13:58Speaker 5: on the television screen and that's not the way to
- 14:01Speaker 5: live your life.
- 14:02Speaker 2: But Dave Allen showing five eighty line brought to you
- 14:04Speaker 2: in a part by your hometown baseball team, The Charles
- 14:06Speaker 2: the Dirty Birds. It's winter time now, but we're already
- 14:08Speaker 2: thinking about baseball at Gomart ballpark'd be a great time
- 14:11Speaker 2: to go ahead and get your season tickets your Dirty
- 14:13Speaker 2: Birds merchant more visit dirtybirdsbaseball dot com. We got a
- 14:15Speaker 2: text here for you since I got a pretty serious
- 14:18Speaker 2: health issue and had to get on the Mediterranean way
- 14:20Speaker 2: of eating. Never felt better in my life, even with
- 14:23Speaker 2: the serious health issue. Stop eating all the sugary, salty,
- 14:27Speaker 2: fried crap people. By the way, Millie's one of my
- 14:30Speaker 2: favorite people in.
- 14:31Speaker 5: Thank you very much. And by the way, crap is
- 14:34Speaker 5: one of my favorite words. But now that I heard
- 14:36Speaker 5: it come out of somebody else's mouth, I can say
- 14:38Speaker 5: it because that's exactly what is in the foods that
- 14:41Speaker 5: we are buying, and it's dangerous and it's keeping people sick.
- 14:46Speaker 5: Congratulations to that person. I also hope their health issues
- 14:50Speaker 5: get better and better. But the fact that this person
- 14:54Speaker 5: is saying eating Mediterranean is they feel better than they
- 14:58Speaker 5: felt in a long time. Kudos to you, and kudos
- 15:01Speaker 5: to the Mediterranean. By the way, I listened to a
- 15:04Speaker 5: broadcast the main doctor for the Woman's Heart Center in
- 15:09Speaker 5: Los Angeles at Cedar Sinai Hospital. She was doing a
- 15:13Speaker 5: telecast and she said, Mediterranean is the way to go.
- 15:17Speaker 5: And that's a pretty large institution and they have a
- 15:21Speaker 5: wide reach to hundreds of thousands of people, maybe millions
- 15:25Speaker 5: of people. Mediterranean is the way to go. I'm not
- 15:28Speaker 5: just saying it because you know, I want to make
- 15:31Speaker 5: myself feel good. I want people to discover what I
- 15:35Speaker 5: found out eight years ago. And I thought I knew
- 15:38Speaker 5: all that she knows to know. And a friend of
- 15:41Speaker 5: mine guided me to Mediterranean. I put myself on it.
- 15:45Speaker 5: There was no group. I became a group and I
- 15:48Speaker 5: did it for five weeks and I've never looked back.
- 15:51Speaker 2: It's wonderful. Remind people when and where your classes.
- 15:54Speaker 5: We meet at the American Job Center for twenty sixth
- 15:57Speaker 5: Leon Sullivan Way. We have a nine to thirty class
- 16:01Speaker 5: Thursday morning at a five thirty class Thursday evening. Please come.
- 16:06Speaker 5: It's modest these it's with other people, and we're not
- 16:11Speaker 5: only losing weight but We're getting healthier.

- 16:38Speaker 6: He's Donald Trump's number one enemy in Congress Chicago politician
- 16:42Speaker 6: Dick Durbin. Now Durbin has a new scheme. He's doing
- 16:46Speaker 6: the dirty work to benefit corporate mega stores. Durbin's bill
- 16:50Speaker 6: could cut corners on your credit card security, putting your personal.
- 16:53Speaker 7: Data at risk.
- 16:55Speaker 6: Big chain retailers and warehouse stores want to inflate their profits,
- 16:58Speaker 6: and liberal Dick Durby and would help them do it.

- 18:38Speaker 2: Had a text after Millie left, but she was still
- 18:40Speaker 2: hanging out of the studio here. Stop me if you
- 18:42Speaker 2: don't believe this. Millie likes to talk a little bit,
- 18:45Speaker 2: so I'm trying to, you know, get her in, get
- 18:47Speaker 2: the next, get her out, get the next guest. But
- 18:49Speaker 2: they wanted to know about restaurants that serve Mediterranean menus
- 18:53Speaker 2: and the texture says, I work seventeen hour days and
- 18:56Speaker 2: two jobs. It sounds like you're perfect for radio. Text
- 18:59Speaker 2: her out. He just could just come on in. Uh,
- 19:01Speaker 2: but I just off the top of my head here
- 19:03Speaker 2: in the area uh olive tree, Uh in in South Charleston,
- 19:09Speaker 2: Mediterranean breeze Uh Aladdin she mentioned Aladdin.
- 19:15Speaker 5: Uh.
- 19:15Speaker 2: And Okay, all right, go on, chump, jump on in here.
- 19:18Speaker 10: Best of crete over on the west Side is one
- 19:20Speaker 10: of my place's favorite places to get a euro.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Okay, that's right.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Sure.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Well, and every restaurant, I mean, save McDonald's and Wendy's
- 19:28Speaker 2: and then you know, are going to have something on
- 19:30Speaker 2: the menu that I had dinner uh with a with
- 19:33Speaker 2: a good friend of mine last week at Sohos and
- 19:37Speaker 2: uh he ordered the salmon. And I don't know what
- 19:41Speaker 2: I've ever sent to. I mean, I don't know if
- 19:42Speaker 2: I've ever seen a better piece of salmon in my
- 19:44Speaker 2: life than what they have at Soho's over there my
- 19:46Speaker 2: go to as always. And I don't know whether this
- 19:48Speaker 2: is Millie Snyder prune or not. I I love the
- 19:51Speaker 2: caesar salad. Probably not gonna be Melly approve because of
- 19:55Speaker 2: the of the dressing, but I get put the black
- 19:58Speaker 2: pepper shrimp on it and uh, and it's it's one
- 20:00Speaker 2: of my favorite things there. So yeah, to answer, I mean,
- 20:02Speaker 2: just off the top of our heads, Mediterranean Breeze, olive Tree, Aladdin.
- 20:07Speaker 2: You said, creepy on the West Side, and then every
- 20:12Speaker 2: place is going to have something on the menu. Even
- 20:15Speaker 2: if you go to an Applebee's or you go somewhere
- 20:18Speaker 2: like that, they're going to have something that's a little
- 20:19Speaker 2: bit more healthier. Dave, don't forget uh creepy Pizza Corridor.
- 20:27Speaker 11: G Oh yeah, cre pizza pizza.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Okay, the spelling kind of got me on that.
- 20:33Speaker 10: I think that they ke combined pizza Barbarossa, Okay, and
- 20:36Speaker 10: then the Crak place up in South Charleston.
- 20:39Speaker 11: I think that they can get all of that yummy
- 20:40Speaker 11: stuff over there.
- 20:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:41Speaker 2: All right, our resident food critic, Amanda McDonald is here
- 20:45Speaker 2: from the West Virginia. You know what you got to eat?
- 20:49Speaker 2: I started eating when I was really really young, Amanda,
- 20:51Speaker 2: and just never got out of the habit. It's a
- 20:54Speaker 2: it's a thing, the thing about you know what Millie
- 20:56Speaker 2: talks about with the Mediterranean diet. It's actually good. I
- 21:00Speaker 2: mean if you like that, and there's people like what
- 21:02Speaker 2: they I was raised. You eat what's on your plate.
- 21:04Speaker 2: You don't ask questions. So I have that kind of
- 21:06Speaker 2: a palate that I can literally eat anything. And but
- 21:11Speaker 2: the food is really good. I mean I love that.
- 21:13Speaker 2: I love that stuff.
- 21:14Speaker 11: Anything with fresh ingredients it's going to be great.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Fresh ingredients is good. All right. So what's going on
- 21:19Speaker 2: with the Western Neian Symphony.
- 21:21Speaker 10: Well, we have got lots of stuff going on right now.
- 21:23Speaker 10: I am really really excited. This Saturday and Sunday, we're
- 21:26Speaker 10: actually going to be doing some Shakespeare on.
- 21:28Speaker 11: Stage with the orchestra.
- 21:29Speaker 10: Okay, yeah, so we are going to be joined by
- 21:32Speaker 10: our friends at the WU School of Theater and Dance,
- 21:35Speaker 10: and the second half of the show we're going to
- 21:37Speaker 10: be playing pro kobms Romeo and Juliet, and in between
- 21:40Speaker 10: pieces of the orchestra playing our actor friends are going
- 21:42Speaker 10: to be performing pieces of Shakespeare's famous love Famous the
- 21:48Speaker 10: Love Fact on stage.
- 21:49Speaker 11: We're really excited.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Nice, So, how did this all come about? Is this
- 21:52Speaker 2: something that you've done in the past.
- 21:53Speaker 10: So we have we're a really great relationship with WU
- 21:56Speaker 10: as all of our different colleges throughout the state. We
- 21:59Speaker 10: actually have a love our musicians, our professors at ABU,
- 22:02Speaker 10: so we have got a really great connection. In last fall,
- 22:06Speaker 10: we connected with the puppetry department and they created some amazing,
- 22:09Speaker 10: humongous puppets to go alongside tre Vincy's Firebird on stage.
- 22:14Speaker 11: So that went over super well.
- 22:15Speaker 10: And Maurice Cone, our music director, loves to try to
- 22:18Speaker 10: do some new and fun, innovative things to pair with
- 22:22Speaker 10: our classical music, and this just really seemed to be
- 22:25Speaker 10: a great fit. So we're really excited to welcome some
- 22:28Speaker 10: actors on stage. At the beginning of this show and
- 22:30Speaker 10: the Charleston performance, we're going to be welcoming our youth
- 22:32Speaker 10: Symphony on stage two to do a side by side
- 22:35Speaker 10: with the orchestra. So Saturday's concerts are really going to
- 22:38Speaker 10: be a lot of community and state collaborations, which you're
- 22:42Speaker 10: really excited to do.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Good stuff because stuff you can we're talking about the
- 22:44Speaker 2: man the McDonald from the Syphony Orchestra, and you're talking
- 22:46Speaker 2: about Maurice, your director, who's been on the show with
- 22:49Speaker 2: us several times in the past. One of the things
- 22:52Speaker 2: I love about what he does and what you guys
- 22:55Speaker 2: as a group do is that it's not just I mean, look,
- 22:58Speaker 2: when you say symphony, people kind of think, oh, it's
- 23:01Speaker 2: nose up in the air. It's kind of it's far
- 23:04Speaker 2: from it. I mean, because I've been to the performances.
- 23:06Speaker 2: I mean, you guys do a lot of fun stuff
- 23:08Speaker 2: and a lot of times stuff that people wouldn't expect,
- 23:12Speaker 2: and it's really really cool the way you do it.
- 23:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:15Speaker 10: Well, and it's something that we love to be able
- 23:17Speaker 10: to bring have those kind of two worlds to meet.
- 23:20Speaker 10: West Virginia has such a rich music history and a
- 23:24Speaker 10: rich cultural history too, and we have some amazing groups
- 23:27Speaker 10: that perform throughout the state and it's really exciting whenever
- 23:30Speaker 10: we can welcome those to participate and kind of have
- 23:34Speaker 10: those two worlds meet.
- 23:36Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean, we could not be more excited to
- 23:39Speaker 11: partner with I mean, the School of Theater Dance at
- 23:41Speaker 11: w IS.
- 23:43Speaker 10: You know, fantastic. These students have been working really really hard.
- 23:46Speaker 10: They're gonna everything's gonna come together really really quickly.
- 23:49Speaker 5: This week.
- 23:50Speaker 10: We've got rehearsals on Thursday and Friday, and then one
- 23:53Speaker 10: more on Saturday morning, So four rehearsals for this whole
- 23:55Speaker 10: big thing to have about fifty music orchestra of musicians
- 23:59Speaker 10: come together, I think about fifteen different actors on stage.
- 24:02Speaker 10: And then if you add in our youth symphony, we've
- 24:04Speaker 10: got a lot of different removing parts. And it's one
- 24:06Speaker 10: of those things where I just really am excited to
- 24:08Speaker 10: be able to bring this to our you know, it's
- 24:12Speaker 10: such a special thing for us to have not only
- 24:13Speaker 10: and they cannot value but in the state.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Talking to Aman McDonald again for the West Virginia Symphony
- 24:17Speaker 2: twenty nine minutes away from Tana Dave Alan Show and
- 24:20Speaker 2: five eighty line brought to you in part by Pinnacle Consultants,
- 24:22Speaker 2: Helping to identify environmental concerns as bestis led Mold and
- 24:26Speaker 2: more and all sorts of indoor quality issues buildings all
- 24:29Speaker 2: across the state providing inspections, testing, and accredited lab services
- 24:33Speaker 2: you can trust. Check out Pinnacle Corp dot net helping
- 24:35Speaker 2: you understand your environment because what you don't know can
- 24:38Speaker 2: hurt you. Talk about the importance of getting youth, the
- 24:41Speaker 2: utes involved in this stuff.
- 24:43Speaker 11: In the young people, well, I mean they are the future, right.
- 24:46Speaker 10: I mean if we do not continue to have our
- 24:49Speaker 10: youth involved, and not only classical music, but music and
- 24:53Speaker 10: arts in general, we will not be able to continue
- 24:55Speaker 10: on these on for the next generations and generations. We
- 24:58Speaker 10: have such a very strong Western Youth Symphony, so this
- 25:01Speaker 10: is something we look forward to every single year, bringing
- 25:03Speaker 10: them on stage with the orchestra musicians. They get a
- 25:05Speaker 10: sip side by side. A lot of times middle schoolers
- 25:08Speaker 10: and high schoolers besides these professional musicians that really could
- 25:11Speaker 10: see themselves in that spot in the next five, ten.
- 25:14Speaker 11: Fifteen years.
- 25:15Speaker 10: Even so, I think it's a really fun way to
- 25:19Speaker 10: have an adult professional meet a young amateur. But it's
- 25:22Speaker 10: also a really great way to show these students what
- 25:25Speaker 10: their future could be. A lot of these a lot
- 25:28Speaker 10: of kids don't necessarily get a step foot on the
- 25:30Speaker 10: clay Center stage, which is such an exciting part anyway,
- 25:34Speaker 10: that just to be able to sit on the stage
- 25:36Speaker 10: with those red seats in the background, with the acoustic
- 25:39Speaker 10: set of Hall provides is just such an amazing experience.
- 25:42Speaker 10: And when we can get some youth into playing music
- 25:47Speaker 10: and acting and doing all of these things in the
- 25:50Speaker 10: creative outlet, it really is going to give us such
- 25:52Speaker 10: a good foundation for their future.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Well, and you know the reason I asked that is
- 25:56Speaker 2: because the knock on these kids today is that it's
- 26:00Speaker 2: hard to get some kids motivated to want to do anything.
- 26:03Speaker 2: I mean, even numbers in sports are when you go
- 26:06Speaker 2: to certain schools, will tell you that we can't get
- 26:08Speaker 2: kids to come out anymore. Not every kid if they do,
- 26:10Speaker 2: if they choose, I mean, not every kid is going
- 26:12Speaker 2: to be a star athlete. And I'm a big believer
- 26:15Speaker 2: in any educator will I don't have kids, but any
- 26:17Speaker 2: educator will tell you that you get kids involved in something,
- 26:22Speaker 2: you know, have them whether it's theater, whether it's dance,
- 26:24Speaker 2: whether it's music, whether it's football, whether it's what whatever,
- 26:27Speaker 2: their church whatever, get them get them involved in something
- 26:30Speaker 2: that they care about.
- 26:31Speaker 10: Oh yeah, Well, and we have a lot of different
- 26:33Speaker 10: opportunities for youth and students and kids to get involved
- 26:37Speaker 10: with the symphony. We do our yearly Young People's concerts,
- 26:40Speaker 10: which we actually bust kids in from all over the
- 26:44Speaker 10: state to different locations.
- 26:45Speaker 11: We were in Clarksburg and Morgantown, in.
- 26:48Speaker 10: Parksburg, Parkersburg, Charleston in these past few years, so really
- 26:52Speaker 10: bringing them to the art is really awesome.
- 26:54Speaker 11: And then we have.
- 26:55Speaker 10: Such a great program with our string educators in the
- 26:57Speaker 10: Cannock County to where we actually have are some of
- 27:00Speaker 10: our musicians, some of our employees are string educators and
- 27:03Speaker 10: they go out into the community into the schools as
- 27:05Speaker 10: well too, So it's a really great way to kind
- 27:07Speaker 10: of get everybody tasted. And yeah, I mean, we got
- 27:09Speaker 10: to keep these kids motivated and excited for things. And
- 27:12Speaker 10: we have this amazing program called our WBSO Passport program
- 27:15Speaker 10: for these is for students twelve and under. They get
- 27:18Speaker 10: a free passport like a paper passport you would get
- 27:20Speaker 10: to be able to go around the world, but this
- 27:23Speaker 10: is who go to all of our symphony concerts for
- 27:24Speaker 10: the year. So that passport they take it to the
- 27:26Speaker 10: box office will get them a free ticket and their parent.
- 27:29Speaker 10: We have stamps for the passport and prizes you in
- 27:31Speaker 10: at the end. But things like that are programs that
- 27:34Speaker 10: we really look forward to. Have brought in a ton
- 27:36Speaker 10: of new faces, old and young, so we really look
- 27:39Speaker 10: forward to kind of continuing to push those things and
- 27:43Speaker 10: continuing to bring young faces into this orchestra.
- 27:46Speaker 2: And a text here Amanda said, do you have a
- 27:47Speaker 2: playlist available for the March fourteenth music for the Big Screen?
- 27:51Speaker 2: Is it all John Williams?
- 27:52Speaker 10: It is not all John Williams. I will give you
- 27:54Speaker 10: a little hit. We do have some John Williams. We've
- 27:57Speaker 10: definitely can't have a music show without John. Yeah, for sure,
- 28:01Speaker 10: and that will be posted a little bit as we
- 28:03Speaker 10: get closer. We like to and sometimes announce those selections
- 28:07Speaker 10: from the stage make it really exciting. But that show
- 28:10Speaker 10: will have lots of John Williams. I'm excited. We'll be
- 28:12Speaker 10: doing some Henry Mancini and Moon River, so you've got
- 28:16Speaker 10: a lot of taste of them of the music in
- 28:19Speaker 10: the movies, so that'll be a really fun one. I
- 28:21Speaker 10: always sell our pop series is if you are not
- 28:23Speaker 10: familiar with classical music, it's a great way to step
- 28:25Speaker 10: your toe in and get excited. It's familiar music that
- 28:29Speaker 10: you're used to listening to, but in a really great,
- 28:31Speaker 10: a fund new setting.
- 28:32Speaker 2: I think you and I talked about this once before.
- 28:34Speaker 2: One of my favorite things to go down the rabbit
- 28:36Speaker 2: hole if I'm listening to music is to go and
- 28:39Speaker 2: find music that are just incredible mashups. And I mean
- 28:44Speaker 2: Metallica performed with the Melbourne Orchestra and it's one of
- 28:49Speaker 2: the most you can find it on YouTube. It's one
- 28:50Speaker 2: of the most amazing concerts that you'll ever see. Metallica,
- 28:53Speaker 2: the Mighty Metallica, Ok. Yeah, with the orchestra.
- 28:56Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 28:57Speaker 10: Well. And I think classical music is has an air
- 29:01Speaker 10: of it sometimes we think of it in a certain way,
- 29:04Speaker 10: but it really is wonderfully accessible. We have seen orchestras
- 29:08Speaker 10: perform not only with heavy metal music bands like Metallica,
- 29:11Speaker 10: but with rap artists, to do movie concerts in different
- 29:15Speaker 10: music and actually bring the stage and the film to
- 29:19Speaker 10: life along with the orchestra underneath of it. So there's
- 29:22Speaker 10: a lot of ways to make what we think of
- 29:25Speaker 10: as you know, high tooting.
- 29:27Speaker 11: I'm really really accessible.
- 29:29Speaker 10: And I think our musicians here at this West Virginia
- 29:32Speaker 10: Symphony here and Charleston specifically do an excellent job of
- 29:36Speaker 10: meshing our classical music in with our community music too.
- 29:41Speaker 10: Dave Porter, who is a fantastic trumpeter around town, is
- 29:44Speaker 10: one of our very highly touted classical trumpeters too. So
- 29:49Speaker 10: musicians can play lots for different hats, and I think
- 29:51Speaker 10: that that's a really great way to kind of span
- 29:53Speaker 10: the horizon too.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Let me give you another one. You can look up
- 29:55Speaker 2: and you're gonna tell you and you're going to say, Dave,
- 29:57Speaker 2: you've been drinking, okay, but I have not? Okay, all right, uh,
- 30:01Speaker 2: And you can find it on YouTube. Sir mix a
- 30:03Speaker 2: lot with this Seattle Symphony doing Baby Got Back. Yeah,
- 30:09Speaker 2: it's killer. I mean, you got to look at it well,
- 30:11Speaker 2: and is it.
- 30:12Speaker 10: You cannot get more of a collaboration or more of
- 30:16Speaker 10: a way to touch people by then combining a classical
- 30:20Speaker 10: violin with sir mix a lot fun.
- 30:22Speaker 2: I mean, And I just remember looking up that clip
- 30:24Speaker 2: and again it's available on YouTube, that that clip of
- 30:27Speaker 2: seeing these musicians in their tuxedos and whatever, and the
- 30:31Speaker 2: expressions on their face when they get to the intro
- 30:36Speaker 2: the I like big butts and I cannot lie. It's
- 30:39Speaker 2: it's it's good stuff. I mean really yeah.
- 30:42Speaker 10: Well it's one of those things where I mean, good
- 30:43Speaker 10: music regardless of what, regardless of it's classical music or
- 30:47Speaker 10: pop or rap or heavy metal, makes us move, It
- 30:49Speaker 10: makes us excited. And I think what we're doing with
- 30:52Speaker 10: the symphony is definitely that.
- 30:54Speaker 2: You got another suggestion here. As huge as the re
- 30:57Speaker 2: emergence of Elvis has been over the last few years, well,
- 30:59Speaker 2: they consider an Elvis theme show, maybe with an Elvis
- 31:03Speaker 2: tribute artist.
- 31:04Speaker 11: I love that, Dave. I absolutely love that.
- 31:06Speaker 10: We work on trying to bring things like that to
- 31:10Speaker 10: our pop series all the time, so I will definitely
- 31:11Speaker 10: take that suggestion back. We are actually getting really really
- 31:14Speaker 10: close to finalizing our twenty six twenty seven season for
- 31:18Speaker 10: next year, so Elvis may not be on this late
- 31:20Speaker 10: for next year, but maybe in the years to come.
- 31:23Speaker 11: I'm really really excited about what we do have.
- 31:25Speaker 10: To offer for twenty six twenty seven. They're again finalizing
- 31:28Speaker 10: that right now. They've got me under lock and key,
- 31:31Speaker 10: but here really really soon. I'm excited to it. Well,
- 31:34Speaker 10: we'll be excited to announce that and all of these
- 31:37Speaker 10: mashups and things that we talk about are going to
- 31:39Speaker 10: be really represented in the next season.
- 31:41Speaker 11: So again I'm really excited. They keep telling me I
- 31:43Speaker 11: have to keep.
- 31:43Speaker 2: My cross mother, and I don't want to get you fired.
- 31:45Speaker 11: Okay, I'm not very good to keep a secrets.
- 31:47Speaker 2: And somebody along the same line Sex and about Trans
- 31:49Speaker 2: Siberian Orchestra. I mean, that's a good example of somebody
- 31:53Speaker 2: who took some really really great music and did it
- 31:56Speaker 2: in a totally different way. You think about their Christmas stuff,
- 31:58Speaker 2: but they go well beyond the Christmas stuff too.
- 32:00Speaker 11: Oh yeah, for sure.
- 32:01Speaker 2: All right, give us a rundown of your upcoming shows again.
- 32:03Speaker 10: Okay, So we've got this Saturday in Charleston on February
- 32:06Speaker 10: twenty first, at seven thirty pm. We've got Shake Chips
- 32:09Speaker 10: Shakespeare on stage, excuse me. And then on Sunday we'll
- 32:12Speaker 10: be taking this to Morgantown at two o'clock at the
- 32:14Speaker 10: Kennedy Center and Morgantown at the campus at WVU. Tickets
- 32:18Speaker 10: are available at Wbsymphony dot org. They start a very
- 32:21Speaker 10: reasonable price at fourteen dollars in Charleston and fifteen dollars
- 32:25Speaker 10: in Morgantown. So it could not be a better way

- 40:34Speaker 2: wv Metronews dot com. The Canawa County Board of Education
- 40:37Speaker 2: has approved a three year contract extension for Superintendent Paula Potter. Now,
- 40:41Speaker 2: Jeff talked with school board president Rick Cavett, who said, quote,
- 40:44Speaker 2: we're all very impressed with the level of detail doctor
- 40:48Speaker 2: Potter is giving when it comes to leading the system
- 40:53Speaker 2: in quotes. Now, in the meantime, you probably have heard
- 40:59Speaker 2: that the Canal is looking at cutting something like one
- 41:01Speaker 2: hundred and forty jobs for the next school year. That
- 41:04Speaker 2: announcement came out around noon on Monday, and according to
- 41:06Speaker 2: a release from the board's office, these cuts should not
- 41:10Speaker 2: result in future school closures. The school system has somewhere
- 41:15Speaker 2: in the neighborhood of about nine hundred and seventy students
- 41:19Speaker 2: that have left the system. I think that was as
- 41:20Speaker 2: of a couple of years ago. They're still looking at
- 41:22Speaker 2: the system, but it's about nine hundred and seventy students
- 41:24Speaker 2: that have left the school board or I'm sorry the

- 41:52Speaker 2: See Dealer for details. Under the heading of the world
- 41:56Speaker 2: may be coming to an end, the Charleston Gazette mail
- 41:59Speaker 2: this morning is giving praise giving praise to West Virginia
- 42:04Speaker 2: Secretary of State Chris Warner for refusing the Trump administration
- 42:09Speaker 2: request to turn over election data, which would be a
- 42:13Speaker 2: direct violation of West Virginia state law. We talked about
- 42:17Speaker 2: a little bit last week and midday the boys talked
- 42:19Speaker 2: about it on talk line with Secretary Warner. But look
- 42:23Speaker 2: editorializing on my part now, he did the right thing.
- 42:26Speaker 2: As the Gazette pointed out, elections are under the banner
- 42:29Speaker 2: of state business, they're not federal government. And again, and
- 42:35Speaker 2: I'm just beating the old Samuel drum here more examples
- 42:39Speaker 2: my opinion of certain Republicans in power wanting to take
- 42:44Speaker 2: things out of local control and have it under the
- 42:48Speaker 2: thumb of DC or in many cases Charleston. It's totally,
- 42:56Speaker 2: in my opinion, totally Unrepublican and totally unconservative, because conservatives,
- 43:03Speaker 2: I thought, and Republicans I thought, we're about smaller government,
- 43:07Speaker 2: keeping DC, keeping Charleston out of your life. So I
- 43:14Speaker 2: almost spit my coffee out this morning because I'm the
- 43:16Speaker 2: guy that still you know, reads the hard copy of
- 43:18Speaker 2: the paper Rip Dug scaff and I just picked it up.
- 43:23Speaker 2: And they're praising Secretary of State Chris Warner on the
- 43:27Speaker 2: op ed pages of the gazetemail. Soon dogs will be
- 43:31Speaker 2: sleeping with cats and so on and so forth. Texas.
- 43:34Speaker 2: Why does five eighty have news segments about doctor Paula
- 43:37Speaker 2: Potter's salary? Been hearing it all morning. You almost be
- 43:39Speaker 2: pandering to them. Maybe she shouldn't be paid so much
- 43:42Speaker 2: and other people would have jobs crowd In my opinion,
- 43:45Speaker 2: she got hired to, says a Textter, at least catastrophically
- 43:48Speaker 2: as possible, land a plane that's low on fuel and
- 43:51Speaker 2: as an engine on fire. I'd want more than one
- 43:53Speaker 2: hundred and eighty thousand dollars to be the face of
- 43:55Speaker 2: consolidation and job cuts. Well, I mean, that's part of
- 43:58Speaker 2: the story. I mean, And look, I have no problem
- 44:02Speaker 2: with paying people what they're worth. And doctor Paula Potter
- 44:05Speaker 2: is the superintendent of Canalla County School's largest school system
- 44:08Speaker 2: in the state, and She's been an employee for thirty years,
- 44:12Speaker 2: and I think us reporting this salary is not the
- 44:15Speaker 2: same as damning her for it or the school system.
- 44:19Speaker 2: It's just it's just the fact they got a contract extension,
- 44:22Speaker 2: and that's what she makes public record. Texas. I thought
- 44:25Speaker 2: Trump was good for Cole. Why have over one thousand
- 44:28Speaker 2: coal jobs been cut since Trump started the second term?
- 44:30Speaker 2: Tariffs don't have any effect on export and markets, do
- 44:33Speaker 2: they question Mark? Nope, it's all Obama and Biden and
- 44:35Speaker 2: Clinton's fault. Sens a tax. If you have a kid

- 48:32Speaker 2: on the show Real Quick. I was one of the
- 48:35Speaker 2: many folks who got held up in all that traffic
- 48:36Speaker 2: mess out near the shops Trace Fork and Corridor G
- 48:39Speaker 2: yesterday about three o'clock yesterday afternoon, I had to make
- 48:42Speaker 2: a quick trip down to the Homeland in La yesterday,
- 48:46Speaker 2: or I thought it was going to be quick. Tractor
- 48:47Speaker 2: trailer overturned and round the interest to the shops at
- 48:52Speaker 2: trace Fork. I'm still trying to figure out exactly how
- 48:54Speaker 2: that happened. They had to reroute traffic around the stores up.
- 48:58Speaker 2: There was a mess for a while, still fouled up
- 49:01Speaker 2: in the southbound lane when I came back through around
- 49:04Speaker 2: six thirty or so last night. I just really want
- 49:06Speaker 2: to know how in an area which the traffic is
- 49:10Speaker 2: always slow going between the shops to Trace Fork and
- 49:13Speaker 2: South Ridge on down the road and Buffalo Wild Wings
- 49:16Speaker 2: and everything, Sam's and all that other stuff. Just I'm
- 49:18Speaker 2: trying to figure out how someone managed to get up
- 49:21Speaker 2: enough speed to turn over a semi truck on its side.
- 49:26Speaker 2: Things that make you go hm, people that make me
- 49:30Speaker 2: go hmmm are standing by at the Capitol right now.
- 49:32Speaker 2: It's Wilson Meadows the talk line. Boys. How we doing hmm?
- 49:38Speaker 3: So how's that?
- 49:38Speaker 2: We're good?
- 49:39Speaker 4: So how does it work?
- 49:40Speaker 2: How exactly does that happen? I mean, and I hope
- 49:43Speaker 2: nobody was injured. I'm just trying to figure out how
- 49:45Speaker 2: somebody manages at the entrance to the shops to Trace
- 49:48Speaker 2: Fork and TG. I know you're very familiar with that area.
- 49:52Speaker 2: How does somebody get up enough speed and attractor trailer
- 49:54Speaker 2: to turn it over at the entrance?
- 49:58Speaker 9: Dude? Ude, never never put anything past anybody that's willing
- 50:03Speaker 9: to try.
- 50:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:05Speaker 9: I don't know the physics of it, but nothing on
- 50:08Speaker 9: that highway surprises me.
