Transcript
- 0:00Have you ever noticed how easy it is to love people who already love you?
- 0:18It's natural to care for friends, to pray for family, to invest in people who appreciate
- 0:24us.
- 0:25But what about those who reject us?
- 0:28Those who oppose us?
- 0:30Or those who never return our kindness?
- 0:34The greatest demonstrations of Christ's love are often seen not in comfortable places,
- 0:40but in hostile ones.
- 0:42Welcome to Traveler's Tales, produced by Enjoying the Journey.
- 0:45This is Greg Dowdy.
- 0:47Throughout history, God has delighted in using imperfect people to accomplish extraordinary
- 0:53things.
- 0:54And when we look beyond their flaws, we often discover timeless lessons that challenge our
- 1:00own walk with Christ.
- 1:02Today's journey takes us to the life of a man who believed that the love of Christ
- 1:07was stronger than hatred, stronger than fear, and even stronger than death.
- 1:13His name was Raymond Lull.
- 1:16While we would not agree with every aspect of his theology or his methods, his life leaves
- 1:22us with a powerful challenge.
- 1:24What can the love of Christ compel an ordinary believer to do?
- 1:30Raymond Lull was born around 1232 on the island of Majorca, off the coast of Spain.
- 1:37As a young man, he lived for pleasure, wealth, and worldly success.
- 1:42Few would have ever imagined that he would one day become one of the most courageous
- 1:47missionary voices in the Middle Ages.
- 1:50Everything changed when Christ transformed his life.
- 1:54After his conversion around 1263, Lull surrendered himself completely to the Lord.
- 2:01He devoted his life to studying scripture, learning languages, and preparing others to
- 2:06carry the gospel across cultural barriers.
- 2:10He even established schools where missionaries could be trained to communicate the gospel
- 2:15in the languages of those they hoped to reach.
- 2:18Lull became convinced that one of the greatest mission fields in the world was among the
- 2:23Muslims of North Africa.
- 2:25During a period marked by the violence and bitterness of the Crusades, many viewed Muslims
- 2:30only as enemies to be defeated.
- 2:34Raymond saw them as souls that needed Christ.
- 2:38That conviction led him to make repeated missionary journeys to places where the gospel was unwelcomed.
- 2:44He preached in Tunis.
- 2:45He traveled to Algeria.
- 2:47He ventured deep into North Africa.
- 2:50More than once he was imprisoned.
- 2:52More than once he was expelled from the city under threat of death.
- 2:57Yet each time he returned.
- 2:59Finally, during his last missionary journey, an angry mob attacked him and brutally stoned
- 3:05him for preaching Christ.
- 3:08Believers rescued his battered body and carried him aboard a ship bound for home.
- 3:14Before reaching the shores of his beloved Majorca, Raymond Lull entered the presence
- 3:18of the Savior he had spent his life proclaiming.
- 3:22While history remembers him as a scholar who wrote hundreds of books, perhaps the greatest
- 3:27testimony of his life was not found in his writings, but in the love that compelled him
- 3:33to keep going.
- 3:35The Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 5 to walk in love as Christ also hath loved us and hath
- 3:42given himself for us.
- 3:44That verse could summarize Raymond Lull's life.
- 3:48His motivation was not anger.
- 3:50It was not politics.
- 3:52It was not revenge.
- 3:53It was love.
- 3:55One of his prayers revealed the depth of his surrender.
- 3:59To thee, Lord God, do I now offer myself, my wife, my children, and all that I possess.
- 4:07These were not merely emotional words spoken in a moment of inspiration.
- 4:12They became the pattern of his life.
- 4:15Everything belonged to Christ.
- 4:18Lull also understood something profound about the God of the Bible.
- 4:23He longed to introduce people to the God who is love.
- 4:271 John 4, 8 reminds us God is love.
- 4:32Raymond believed that people needed more than religion.
- 4:35They needed a relationship with the God whose love was demonstrated at Calvary.
- 4:41He once wrote, He who loves not, lives not.
- 4:46He who lives by the life cannot die.
- 4:50Near the end of his life, his heart's desire was still the same.
- 4:54He prayed, Men are wont to die from old age, but thy servant would rather die in the glow
- 5:01of love even as thou wast willing to die for him.
- 5:05What a remarkable statement.
- 5:07He didn't simply want to live for Christ.
- 5:10He wanted to love like Christ.
- 5:13And that's where this story reaches each of us.
- 5:17Most of us will never face imprisonment for our faith.
- 5:21We may never stand before an angry mob.
- 5:24But every day God places people in our path who desperately need to see the love of Christ.
- 5:31Will we love those who disagree with us?
- 5:34Will we pray for those who oppose us?
- 5:37Will we intentionally carry the gospel to people outside our comfort zone?
- 5:43It is easy to love people who are like us.
- 5:47It is Christ-like to love people who need Him.
- 5:51The love of Christ has always been the greatest missionary force the world has ever known.
- 5:57Programs cannot replace it.
- 5:59Knowledge cannot substitute for it.
- 6:01Courage alone cannot sustain it.
- 6:04Only a heart captivated by the love of Jesus can continue loving when love is costly.
- 6:12May the Lord fill our hearts with that sane love.
- 6:15May His love move us beyond comfort, beyond convenience, and even beyond fear.
- 6:22And may the people around us see not just our convictions, but the compassion of Christ
- 6:28shining through our lives.
- 6:31Because when the love of Christ controls us, there is no person beyond our concern, no
- 6:37place beyond our reach, and no sacrifice too great for the one who first loved us.
- 6:46Thank you for joining us today on Traveler's Tales.
