- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Waffer, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland, County
- 0:12of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37They go to another place, preach God saving people, and churches
- 0:41are being planted. They go back to the places they
- 0:45were just at because they need to do some stuff.
- 0:48Now you don't just give the gospel to someone, say have a
- 0:51nice life, I'll see an eternity. The job of the person who leads
- 0:56someone to crisis, to disciple them so they get strong in the
- 0:59Lord, to teach them the Word so they can be able to stand on
- 1:03their two feet trusting in God. And that requires teaching and
- 1:08spiral study. Hiring someone and thinking
- 1:11they'll hit the ground running without any bumps along the way
- 1:14is a bit unrealistic. It's also like that with someone
- 1:18who's just starting to believe in Jesus.
- 1:20It's not realistic to think they'll jump right into working
- 1:23with God as soon as they find salvation.
- 1:26In today's message, Pastor Clark shares some great reasons for
- 1:29encouraging new believers dive into the Bible and join in on
- 1:33those engaging Bible studies. Getting to know God's Word can
- 1:39really boost their spiritual growth.
- 1:42Now here's Pastor Clark in the book of Acts chapter 14 as he
- 1:46continues his message called persecution.
- 1:49When your heart and mind submits to the issues in our life,
- 1:54whether we like them or not, and we say, Lord, I'm not real happy
- 1:57with this right now, but I trust you and what you're doing in my
- 2:01life and my heart wants to be soft towards you and I want to
- 2:06be open and willing to accept what it is you're doing in my
- 2:09life and I want to praise you in it.
- 2:12Count it all joy when you follow the diverse trials and
- 2:15temptations. The Bible says that the trying
- 2:17of your faith works. Patience.
- 2:19I want to be, and I'm sure you do too.
- 2:22The kind of person that I'm not complaining or I'm not groaning
- 2:25and moaning. That I accept God's sovereign
- 2:28hand in my life and say, God, you have a plan in this and I
- 2:32want to praise you because in the power of praise there is
- 2:35deliverance and you're passing the test when you praise God for
- 2:39what it is you're going through. If you're moaning and groaning,
- 2:42the Lord's OK, we got to go through this for a while now
- 2:44you're still not getting it, are you?
- 2:46You're still not praising me in spite of the storm.
- 2:49And so these guys are in the midst of it, but they are filled
- 2:53because their hearts are open to God and they're filled with joy
- 2:56by the power of the Holy Spirit. Now in verse 14, the adjourned
- 2:59and he starts in these other regions.
- 3:02Now it happened in Iconium and this is the area of Galatia at
- 3:06the time, it's the Roman Empire. A lot of pagans in these
- 3:09countries are going to no church yet until the gospel gets there
- 3:13and Paul and Barnabas are used by the Lord to see people become
- 3:16believers and churches are established.
- 3:19They went together to the synagogue.
- 3:20So the beauty of this thing is they had a place to go to get
- 3:24people to hear when they couldn't find a synagogue, they
- 3:26preached in the streets. But because of Paul and Barnabas
- 3:30being Jewish people, they were accepted in the system of
- 3:35Judaism because they had knowledge of the Old Testament.
- 3:37So they were given the opportunity to speak.
- 3:40I'm sure after they spoke, the Jews were upset.
- 3:42Like we should never let these guys say anything.
- 3:45It's ruining our ministry, right?
- 3:46People are leaving and following them, but that's what happens,
- 3:49right? So they, they spoke to a great
- 3:51multitude, both of the Jews and the Greeks believe, but the
- 3:54unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their
- 3:58minds against the brother. This is the work of the devil.
- 4:01Whenever you're anywhere where the truth of God is going forth,
- 4:05people can say things about whoever the teacher is.
- 4:09They can say, well, they're hypocrites or they're this or
- 4:12they're that. If we're honest, we all have
- 4:14areas of hypocrisy in our life, right?
- 4:17Is anybody perfect here today? If you tell me guys, you're
- 4:21perfect, I'll just ask your wife or I'll ask your husband, right?
- 4:26But you know, this is the patience of God, right?
- 4:29And he chooses to use weak and foolish things that confound the
- 4:32what God never looks at the vessel and says, well, boy, I'm
- 4:34going to pick you because like you're like no one I've ever
- 4:36created. And boy, people are going to be
- 4:38blown away with your homiletic skills and your preaching
- 4:41ability. God's like, forget that.
- 4:44Let me fill you and let me speak through you because I don't want
- 4:47you getting in the way of what it is I want to say.
- 4:50But all the time someone will come to someone and say, you
- 4:53know, with this person, you know, I saw them, you know, say
- 4:57this or they acted this way or whatever.
- 4:59And so people seem to have a tendency to want to judge you
- 5:03instead of judging themselves. And the enemy wants to pull the
- 5:06church down and destroy it and destroy the people that minister
- 5:10in the church through slander and hatred and unbelief and
- 5:14criticism. That's why it says in Ephesians,
- 5:17let all bitterness and wrath and clamor and evil speaking be put
- 5:21away from you, and be kind, tenderhearted, forgiving one
- 5:25another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
- 5:28So this continual, habitual need to forgive, right?
- 5:31And when we forgive, we're to move on and keep going on
- 5:35looking toward the Lord. That's something we can't do
- 5:38without the grace of God in our lives.
- 5:40You have bitterness in your heart.
- 5:42You want to slander people. You, you want to get even with
- 5:44them. You want to be vindictive toward
- 5:46them. You got to like, say, Lord, this
- 5:48is not you. Help me to forgive.
- 5:51Well, how many times do we forgive?
- 5:53Jesus says 70 * 7. That's 490 times for the same
- 5:57offense. That's the picture of you keep
- 6:00forgiven, right? So what happens is they're
- 6:02trying to poison the mind of these people.
- 6:06Therefore, they stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in
- 6:09the Lord. Those guys knew what people were
- 6:11saying. They felt that they experienced
- 6:13it, but they didn't say, you know, get thin skin and then
- 6:17say, well, this isn't fair. We're just trying to do what God
- 6:20wants us to do. We're not going to do this
- 6:22anymore. It's hurting our feelings or
- 6:23whatever. No, they just kept being
- 6:26faithful. It says they spoke boldly in the
- 6:29Lord who is bearing witness to the word of his grace, granting
- 6:32signs and wonders to be done by their hands.
- 6:35So this Apostolic authority ability, sometimes God showed up
- 6:40in signs and wonders and they did miracles.
- 6:43Lots of times there was no miracles.
- 6:45It wasn't anything. And Paul in and of himself, it
- 6:48was a special anointing that came at times and in seasons for
- 6:51God to be glorified in the midst of a situation where people
- 6:55would get their attention taken by some miraculous situation.
- 6:59So the multitude of the city in verse 4 was divided, part sided
- 7:03with the Jews and part with the apostles.
- 7:05So like in in our world today, you have a group of people who
- 7:08are followers of Christ and then you have a group of people who
- 7:11are against Christ, right? It's always that way, even
- 7:14sometimes, unfortunately, in churches.
- 7:16And when this issue happened, this violent attempt was made by
- 7:20both the Gentiles and the Jews with their rulers to abuse and
- 7:24stone them. They became aware of it, and
- 7:27they fled the Lystra and Derby cities of Iconia into the
- 7:31surrounding region. And they were reaching the
- 7:33gospel there. So they understood the attempt
- 7:36to take them out, to kill them, basically to assassinate them.
- 7:39They were smart enough to know that they needed to get out of
- 7:42that town and move to next place.
- 7:44But the stoning never stopped. Paul remembers when Stephen was
- 7:49stoned, he was part of that group that had Stephen Stone,
- 7:52the first martyr in the book of the Acts of New Testament
- 7:54Church. So now Paul's going to
- 7:56experience some of the same things that those have gone
- 7:59before him. So now they go to Lystra, verse
- 8:038. And in Lystra, a certain man
- 8:05without strength in his feet was sitting a cripple from his
- 8:09mother's womb. So this guy didn't have a
- 8:11temporary paralysis. This didn't happen after he was
- 8:15born. He was born with the inability
- 8:18to walk. He had never walked.
- 8:20This man heard Paul speaking. He heard the gospel.
- 8:23You heard the message, Paul observing him intently.
- 8:26And so you have an audience. You're speaking.
- 8:28I see your eyes, you see mine. Sometimes I get fixated on
- 8:32someone in the room because I sense there's a heavy burden in
- 8:35their lives. There's something going on.
- 8:37I don't know what it is, but the Lord does.
- 8:39And I just say, Lord, you know, speak to them, whatever it is
- 8:42you need to say to them. And sometimes I see people who
- 8:44who are eager to want to follow Jesus deeper and I pray and I
- 8:49said, Lord help cultivate that in their lives.
- 8:51Help them to sense that and want to follow you.
- 8:54And if I can be of any help, show me how myself or the elders
- 8:57can be of help and the others in the church that are wanting to
- 9:00serve people. So he's looking intently and he
- 9:02sees that he had faith to be healed.
- 9:05He's looking at this man and he says he has faith to be healed.
- 9:09Now this is interesting because God does all things according to
- 9:13counsel of his own will. And some of these faith
- 9:16churches, they'll teach, well, the reason you're not healed is
- 9:18you don't have enough faith, right?
- 9:20You hear that? But there's this element too,
- 9:23that when we come to God, we have to pray believing, and
- 9:27that's where we struggle. I believe, Lord, help my
- 9:31unbelief. But God honors belief, simple
- 9:35belief. And so this man is hungry for
- 9:41the Lord, but he also has something happening in his
- 9:45spirit that Paul recognized that this guy can believe God for
- 9:50anything right now in his life. And that's rare.
- 9:53That doesn't happen all the time, but he senses that
- 9:58something can happen here. The Holy Spirit obviously was
- 10:02speaking to Paul about this. So Paul, think about this.
- 10:06I mean, sometimes like people came for healing.
- 10:08They didn't get healed. Other times they got healed.
- 10:11And I'm sure at times Paul's like, God, I don't know how this
- 10:14works. Why can't it work all the time,
- 10:16you know? But it doesn't.
- 10:17And probably the reason it doesn't is, is that we would
- 10:19think we had something to do with it, right?
- 10:22Do you ever pray and really believe and you see God do
- 10:25something and touch someone and you're like, wow, you know, I'm
- 10:27going to do this all the time. And then the next time you pray
- 10:30and it doesn't happen and you're like, why did it happen the one
- 10:33time and why didn't it happen the other time?
- 10:35That's the mystery of God and his plan, his sovereign plan.
- 10:39So he says to this guy, and this would take some real faith on
- 10:42Paul's part. Stand up straight on your feet.
- 10:46And he leaped and he walked. Now, what if Paul would have
- 10:49said, stand up straight on your feet and then nothing happened?
- 10:53That would be somewhat like embarrassing, I guess.
- 10:57And they say, well, why did you say that?
- 10:58I don't know why I said that. I just was hoping or maybe, but
- 11:03somehow, you know, again, God's sovereignty, there was such an
- 11:06complete evidence that something miraculous was going to happen
- 11:10here, that God did something miraculous.
- 11:14Now, when the people saw what Paul had done and they think
- 11:16it's what Paul did, it's what the Lord did, right?
- 11:19They raise their voices saying in the Laconian language, the
- 11:22gods have come down to us and the likeness of men.
- 11:26So these people are into Pagan worship.
- 11:29They're Pagan worship of false deities and idols, and Barnabas
- 11:33they called Zeus and Paul they called Hermes.
- 11:36So this Greek mythology, these people believe that these false
- 11:40gods would provide rain and crops and prosperity and all
- 11:43these things. This is what they worship.
- 11:45This is what they called out to. And somehow they're conveying
- 11:48this fact that the miracle happened because Paul and
- 11:51Barnabas are actually Incarnate Zeus and Hermes, these
- 11:55mythological gods. And they say Hermes about Paul
- 11:58because he was the chief speaker.
- 12:00Then the priest of Zeus, whose temple was in front of their
- 12:03city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, intending the
- 12:07sacrifice of the multitude. Big celebration here, Miracle.
- 12:11So let's get the leader of this cult and bring these fancy, you
- 12:18know, kind of flower things, garlands, whatever they were
- 12:20putting around their necks to bring down and pay homage to
- 12:23these false gods. And they wanted to sacrifice
- 12:26with all these people. Now, these people were hearing
- 12:29the gospel. They saw the miracle.
- 12:32Some of them, I'm sure, became true believers.
- 12:34And a lot of them are just caught up in the atmosphere.
- 12:38So it says in verse 14, when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard
- 12:42this, they tore their clothes and ran in among the multitude
- 12:46crying out and saying, men, why are you doing these things?
- 12:50We also are men with the same nature as you and preach you
- 12:54that you should turn from these useless things to the living God
- 12:57who made heaven, the earth, the sea and all things that are in
- 13:01them. So right away there's humility.
- 13:03Could Paul and Barnabas like faked it for a while?
- 13:06They would these guys really think we're special.
- 13:08So maybe because they think we're something we're not, we
- 13:11can like get them focused on their need to believe using
- 13:15humanistic technologies, you know, or kind of improvisation
- 13:19of making something that isn't right look like it's right when
- 13:23it's actually wrong. And that's what happens in the
- 13:26false teaching churches. People set themselves up as
- 13:29gurus. People look at these people like
- 13:31they're really something. They're manipulated.
- 13:34And their whole agenda is to have people lift them up and not
- 13:37the Lord be lifted up. And so people's faith is not in
- 13:41the living God, it's in some man.
- 13:43And that's idolatry. And so what's happening here
- 13:46immediately, Paul and Barnabas know what they got to do.
- 13:49This element of tearing their clothes apart was this evidence
- 13:52of their brokenness, their desperation, crying out and
- 13:56saying, why are you doing this? This is an abomination.
- 14:00We're men that's like you. We have the same nature.
- 14:02We have the same struggles. We have the same fears.
- 14:04We have the same doubts. We have the same unbelief.
- 14:07We have the same struggles in life.
- 14:08We're nothing. God is everything.
- 14:10Christ alone is the healer. He's the king.
- 14:13He's the Lord. He's the savior.
- 14:15We're just messengers of what it is we're called to do.
- 14:19And you need to turn from these useless things.
- 14:21They didn't beat around the Bush.
- 14:23What you're worshiping, what you're following is absolute
- 14:26nonsense. It has no power and no ability.
- 14:30We need Paul's teaching that we need to look to the God.
- 14:34So God can't work in these guys through Old Testament
- 14:38Scriptures. They knew nothing of it, these
- 14:39people. So he used creation.
- 14:42And the Bible tells us in Romans that even by creation, every man
- 14:47knows that there's a creator. Even the unbelievers, the worst
- 14:50Pagan person, when they look up at the stars at night, they know
- 14:54in their conscience that there's a God, but they refused to
- 14:57acknowledge Him because of their sin.
- 14:59So He's appealing to them. Look, the heaven, the earth, the
- 15:04sea, and all things that are in them, who in bygone generations
- 15:09allowed all nations to walk in their own ways.
- 15:13Nevertheless, He did not leave himself without witness.
- 15:16In that He did good. He gave us rain from heaven and
- 15:21fruitful seasons. So God, in his grace, even in
- 15:25the midst of all people and people that hate him and reject
- 15:29him, God allows the creation to be a blessing to all humankind.
- 15:35You know, because of the rain, we have crops and it feeds all
- 15:38of us throughout the earth, throughout the world.
- 15:42And he does this, filling our hearts with food and gladness.
- 15:48And with these sayings, they could scarcely restrain the
- 15:51multitudes from sacrifice to them.
- 15:53These people were still blind and not listening, and they
- 15:57wanted to pay homage and glorify these people, Paul and Barnabas,
- 16:03like they're something they're not.
- 16:06So then it says in verse 19, the Jews from Antioch and Iconium
- 16:09came there to this place. And having persuaded the
- 16:12multitudes, and these are all the people out there that are in
- 16:15this midst of this group right now, they stone Paul and drag
- 16:20them out of the city, supposing him to be dead.
- 16:23So the persecution gets more than just some words.
- 16:27Now their lives are being placed in jeopardy, and I don't know
- 16:34how many of us would continue if we knew our lives were in
- 16:39jeopardy. Only the grace of God would keep
- 16:41Paul going, or you or me or anyone else.
- 16:43You get stoned by a group of people, you start saying, well,
- 16:47I think my ministry is ending now.
- 16:49I'm going to let someone else take over, right?
- 16:52But the Lord is like, no, Paul, you're going to keep going on.
- 16:56You're going to eventually be martyred one day, but this isn't
- 17:00the day you're going to be martyred.
- 17:01And it says, however, in verse 20, when the disciples gathered
- 17:04around him, he rose up and went in the city.
- 17:07Some people think he was dead and somehow they prayed and he
- 17:10was resurrected. The scriptures don't indicate
- 17:12that, but he was probably close to death.
- 17:15And the fact that he was able to get up from the severe stoning
- 17:19shows that the Lord supernaturally did something in
- 17:21his body because the next day he got up with Barnabas and they
- 17:26went to another place to continue preaching in Derby in
- 17:29verse 21. And when they had preached the
- 17:32gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to
- 17:37Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch. So they go to another place,
- 17:41preach God saving people and churches are being planted.
- 17:47They go back to the places they were just at because they need
- 17:50to do some stuff. Now.
- 17:52You don't just give the gospel to someone, say have a nice
- 17:54life, I'll see an eternity. The job of the person who leads
- 17:59someone to crisis, to disciple them so they get strong in the
- 18:02Lord, to teach them the Word so they can be able to stand on
- 18:06their two feet trusting in God. And that requires teaching in
- 18:11spiral study, learning to pray. Many of you are disciples.
- 18:15You are growing more and more every day.
- 18:18You're digging into the word, you're listening.
- 18:20Many of you are teaching the word.
- 18:22You're discipling other people. And so they went back to
- 18:26strengthen the soul of the disciples, exhorting them to
- 18:28continue in the faith. Don't give up no matter what
- 18:31happens in a persecution. And boy do they have it back in
- 18:34those days in the church like some place in in the world right
- 18:37now in third world countries. If you become a believer and
- 18:40they find and out in somebody's 1040 window areas like India,
- 18:45Malaysia, Pakistan, you're martyred many times, you're
- 18:50rejected by your family and it'll cost you your very life.
- 18:54It's hard to believe that China, other places like that.
- 18:59He said to them, we must through many tribulations enter the
- 19:03Kingdom of God. He didn't candy coat being a
- 19:06believer. Being a believer is a challenge.
- 19:09You're going to have adversity from the places you never
- 19:11dreamed, and sometimes it'll come from the people that you
- 19:15love the most. You just don't understand.
- 19:16But it happens. And he said we must, through
- 19:19many tribulations, enter the Kingdom of God.
- 19:22So our pilgrimage toward the heavenly city will be at times
- 19:26challenged by very deep trials and tribulations.
- 19:29If he didn't tell them that and they started going through this
- 19:33and they didn't know that this is part of the Christian
- 19:35experience, they would have wanted to quit.
- 19:38And you and I would too. Thank God that the Bible covers
- 19:41everything that we could possibly go through in our human
- 19:44life and says in verse 23. So then when they had appointed
- 19:49elders in every church and prayed with fasting, they
- 19:51commended them to the Lord and whom they had believed.
- 19:54So the foundation of a New Testament church is plurality of
- 19:59leadership. It is not a one man show.
- 20:01I don't lead this church alone. I lead it with George and Lewis
- 20:07and John. They're elders, and we're
- 20:09accountable to God, first of all, for what it is we do, and
- 20:12we're accountable to you. We need to be doing what it is
- 20:16that God's told us to do to equip the Saints for the work in
- 20:20the ministry. You're the Saints, and the
- 20:22purpose of being here today is to just not be entertained.
- 20:26Go home and do my thing. But somehow something from the
- 20:28Word will come to you today and you'll use this in your life
- 20:31with whoever you are meeting with during the week and your
- 20:34job, your home, your neighborhood, your community,
- 20:37the Bible studies you might have.
- 20:39You're learning to grow in the grace and in all these you've
- 20:42got. And God uses the elders and
- 20:45others in the church to be able to teach and equip the people
- 20:48and strengthen them. And every church there should be
- 20:51elders. And that's the way the church
- 20:53started the day. There's too many churches that
- 20:56are being led by one person. And when that person begins to
- 20:59crack and to fail, there's no one to hold him up and to help
- 21:02him. And then he crashes and burns.
- 21:05I'm thankful that whenever I go through trials and struggles, I
- 21:09have people that can help me when I need a break.
- 21:12I can have other guys do what it is I'm called to do to get re
- 21:17energized, you know, and spend time with the Lord in prayer and
- 21:20have them teach me what I need to know in some seasons of my
- 21:24life. That's what I'm so grateful for
- 21:28this church and the men who are learning to teach the word of
- 21:31God. It makes the church more strong,
- 21:35it makes it more powerful, it makes it more healthy.
- 21:37The women who are teaching the women, the men who are teaching
- 21:40the studies, the one-on-one ministries, all these things,
- 21:43the small groups, the youth groups, everything is happening.
- 21:46The women's groups, God is using this to make you stronger in the
- 21:52Lord. And whenever the church ignores
- 21:55the foundation of what the New Testament said about how the
- 21:59leadership is to be established, it begins to become powerless.
- 22:04After this, it says the Lord commended them to the Lord.
- 22:09He commended these people, the churches, the elders and whom
- 22:12they had believed. And after they had passed
- 22:14through Pasidia, they came to Panfilia.
- 22:18Now when they had preached the word in Purga, they went down to
- 22:21Italia. From there they sailed to
- 22:24Antioch where they had been commended to the grace of God
- 22:27for the work which they had completed.
- 22:29So they go and all these regions now and what's exciting, they're
- 22:32going home, right? This is the first missions
- 22:35conference. They're coming back to the
- 22:37church that prayed for them, that supported them, that sent
- 22:40them out, and they're going to give a report to the church on
- 22:43what the Lord has done in verse 27.
- 22:46And now when they had come and gathered the church together,
- 22:49they reported all that God had done with them and that he had
- 22:53opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.
- 22:56So they stayed there a long time with the disciples.
- 22:59So we have missionaries we support.
- 23:01We committed this to be a Church of missions and outreach.
- 23:05We support crew in different parts of the world working on
- 23:09college campuses. We support the mission in Spain
- 23:13for sports ministry. We support Lifeway crisis
- 23:17pregnancy center in the area, these people that we support in
- 23:21the mission. And so we are grateful when they
- 23:24come and they give us an update on what it is they're doing.
- 23:28And so part of the budget and you're giving goes toward these
- 23:31missionaries and supporting them.
- 23:33But the purpose of the gospel right now, through Grace Radio
- 23:38and through our own lives wherever we go out and the
- 23:40people we rub shoulders with, get people coming to hear the
- 23:43Word of God. Because when people hear the
- 23:45Word of God, that's how God saves them.
- 23:48Without the preaching, there is no message.
- 23:51And so we're all called to be able to share this wonderful
- 23:54message of the gospel. We're so glad you joined us
- 23:58today on this edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 24:01Pastor Clark is teaching through the book of Acts, which is the
- 24:04only book that chronicles the history of the early church
- 24:08immediately after Jesus's ascension.
- 24:11It gives us a front row seat to how the Gospel began to move
- 24:14outward, starting in Jerusalem and reaching into the heart of
- 24:18the Roman Empire. In just three decades, a small
- 24:22group of frightened ordinary believers became a bold, spirit
- 24:26empowered movement that transformed the known world.
- 24:30Acts is not just a history lesson.
- 24:32It's a reminder of what God can do when His people are
- 24:35surrendered, obedient, and filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 24:40Their perseverance still inspires us today.
- 24:44May we follow their example and live faithfully for Christ in
- 24:47our own time. We hope today's message
- 24:50encouraged you. Living Waters of Grace is a
