- 1:07Speaker 1: Potato Yoki at Nicola's. My sister Kim and brother in
- 1:11Speaker 1: law Larry were in town this weekend and we went
- 1:14Speaker 1: out to dinner at Nikola's Italian restaurant in Over the Rhine.
- 1:18Speaker 1: It's my belief that the single best bite in any
- 1:22Speaker 1: Cincinnati restaurant is Nikola's Crispy Potato Yoki. It comes in
- 1:28Speaker 1: a four cheese sauce with chives and truffle shavings, and
- 1:32Speaker 1: it is to die for. The sauce is rich and decadent,
- 1:37Speaker 1: but the little pasta dumplings are surprisingly light. I always
- 1:41Speaker 1: recommend it as a shared appetizer for the table and
- 1:45Speaker 1: it never disappoints. If you live in the Cincinnati area
- 1:49Speaker 1: and have never tried it, run, don't walk, to Nicola's
- 1:54Speaker 1: and get the crispy Potato Yoki. Now time for the
- 1:59Speaker 1: radio re plays from Sunday's win over the Raiders. It
- 2:04Speaker 1: is a spectacular Sunday afternoon for football in Cincinnati as
- 2:08Speaker 1: the Bengals look to begin a November to remember. With
- 2:13Speaker 1: their three and five record.
- 2:14Speaker 2: That's what's needed and they hope to get a jump
- 2:17Speaker 2: started today at home against the Las Vegas Raiders. And
- 2:21Speaker 2: it is time for the Pigskin to fly.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Here in the jungle, so rather than taking three points,
- 2:28Speaker 1: the Bengals line up offensively. On fourth down and three
- 2:31Speaker 1: from the twenty, Burrow with a long count might be
- 2:34Speaker 1: trying to draw Vegas off side.
- 2:35Speaker 3: No, they snap it.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Burrow looking scrambling, throwing caught for the first down Tanner
- 2:42Speaker 2: Hudson with a catch. He's brought down just inside the
- 2:46Speaker 2: ten by safety Nate Hobbs, and the decision to go
- 2:50Speaker 2: for it pays off. It's first and goal inside the ten.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Cincinnati will line up in the shotgun. Chase Brown lines
- 2:57Speaker 2: up to the right of Burrow. Quick snap, Burrow begins right,
- 3:00Speaker 2: looking into the end zone. He throws caught on the
- 3:03Speaker 2: back line, touchdown Chase Brown near the back right pylon.
- 3:10Speaker 2: As the Bengals convert on fourth down to extend the
- 3:13Speaker 2: drive and then score on third.
- 3:15Speaker 1: And goal from the one from the right hash forty
- 3:18Speaker 1: four yards away. McPherson's kick is up.
- 3:21Speaker 3: And it is good. Good.
- 3:24Speaker 2: It was very close to the right upright from the
- 3:27Speaker 2: kicker's perspective, but it was on the right side of it,
- 3:31Speaker 2: and Cincinnati has taken a ten to seven lead. Clock
- 3:34Speaker 2: is running with forty three seconds left in the half.
- 3:36Speaker 2: The Bengals have all three timeouts remaining, first and goal
- 3:40Speaker 2: from the ten. Burrow catches the shotgun, snap flops the throw,
- 3:43Speaker 2: passes caught at the forest yoc Bosh extends the ball
- 3:48Speaker 2: over the goal line, touchdown Bengals. We have thirty two
- 3:53Speaker 2: seconds left in the half. Third down in goal from
- 3:56Speaker 2: the two for Cincinnati. Burrow catches the shotgun snap look
- 4:00Speaker 2: to throw, begins scrambling right. He's at the ten, looking
- 4:03Speaker 2: throwing caught touchdown. Drew Sample with the catch about one
- 4:09Speaker 2: yard deep in the end zone, and the Bengals have
- 4:12Speaker 2: scored on all four of their true possession. A makeshift
- 4:17Speaker 2: offensive line on the field for Las Vegas. They've lost
- 4:21Speaker 2: two tackles in a guard during the course of this game,
- 4:24Speaker 2: and their center was already out. They tried to run
- 4:28Speaker 2: a Jet sweep. The ball is kicked backwards, it's on
- 4:31Speaker 2: the ground. Logan Wilson scoops it up and begins running
- 4:35Speaker 2: and he'll be tackled half a twenty one yard line
- 4:39Speaker 2: a Vegas. A disastrous play for the Las Vegas Raiders,
- 4:45Speaker 2: as the Jets sweep to DJ Turner was fumbled, kicked backward,
- 4:50Speaker 2: scooped up by Logan Wilson and carried to the twenty
- 4:54Speaker 2: one yard line, second in goal from the eleven. Burrow
- 4:57Speaker 2: catches the shotgun snap begins scrambling right now reverse direction,
- 5:00Speaker 2: throws into the end zones that is caught in the
- 5:03Speaker 2: back left corner by Mike Kaseiki. Kasiki now doing the gritty,
- 5:09Speaker 2: at least his version of it, and he gets a
- 5:12Speaker 2: flying high five from Jamar Chase. Four touchdown passes to
- 5:17Speaker 2: four different receivers for Joe Burrow today.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Burrow ready for the shotgun snap. Three receivers left, one right.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Joe has the ball looking left, goes caught by Kasiki.
- 5:28Speaker 1: He's at the twenty middle of the field. Ten five touchdown.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Wow, forty seven yards touchdown pass number five for Joe
- 5:40Speaker 2: Burrow to tie his career high.
- 5:43Speaker 4: And how about a blown coverage? How about a missed assignment?
- 5:47Speaker 1: Nobody takes up Kasiki first and ten Raiders at their
- 5:51Speaker 1: own thirty Desmond back to throw.
- 5:53Speaker 2: It's a deep drop. Hendrickson Saxum knocks the ball free.
- 5:57Speaker 2: It's still loose and the Bengals fall as Logan Wilson
- 6:01Speaker 2: recovers at the thirteen yard line. Ah four sack Day
- 6:07Speaker 2: for big play Tray.
- 6:09Speaker 4: Okay, why the hell aren't they helping Mundford? Mundford's got
- 6:14Speaker 4: a one on one and Trey Hendrickson.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Is abusing him.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Browning takes a knee and the clock will wind down
- 6:21Speaker 1: with twenty five seconds to go. Both teams begin the
- 6:25Speaker 1: march toward the middle of the field as the Bengals
- 6:27Speaker 1: get it done here at pay Corpse Stadium and get
- 6:30Speaker 1: their first home victory of the year, and they do
- 6:34Speaker 1: so in decisive fashion, beating the Raiders forty one to
- 6:39Speaker 1: twenty four. All right, let's start the wrap up by
- 6:43Speaker 1: discussing the offense. T Higgins, Orlando Brown, Junior, Zach Moss,
- 6:48Speaker 1: Charlie Jones, and Jermaine Burton. Didn't play more on Burton later.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Despite that, the Bengals topped forty points for the first
- 6:56Speaker 1: time in almost exactly two years. Oddly enough, it was
- 7:00Speaker 1: also Week nine and twenty twenty two when they beat
- 7:03Speaker 1: Carolina forty two to twenty one and a five touchdown
- 7:06Speaker 1: day for Joe Mixon. This five touchdown day belonged to
- 7:11Speaker 1: Joe Burrow. He's got twenty touchdown passes and only four
- 7:15Speaker 1: interceptions this season, and he spent a few minutes in
- 7:17Speaker 1: front of his locker with Dave Lapham after the game.
- 7:22Speaker 3: What did you see?
- 7:22Speaker 5: How did you take apart this defense like you did?
- 7:26Speaker 6: You know, they got a great rush and they mix
- 7:29Speaker 6: up the coverage as well and make it tough on
- 7:31Speaker 6: your pre snap. So I just knew I had to
- 7:32Speaker 6: get the ball out of my hands quickly try to
- 7:34Speaker 6: get it to my guys.
- 7:36Speaker 7: We ran the ball well today, and.
- 7:39Speaker 6: You know, I love the game plan coming in, so
- 7:41Speaker 6: everybody's got to be able to consistently do that the
- 7:44Speaker 6: whole game.
- 7:45Speaker 5: A couple of times today, like you always do. When
- 7:47Speaker 5: you're climbing the pocket. I'm telling you, man, you have
- 7:50Speaker 5: eyes all over your head, the side of your head,
- 7:52Speaker 5: the back of your head. I don't when you know
- 7:53Speaker 5: to take a hard righte go left retreat? I mean,
- 7:57Speaker 5: is that just instinct?
- 7:58Speaker 3: What is that?
- 7:59Speaker 6: Yeah, something I've always felt comfortable doing. Also understanding the
- 8:05Speaker 6: coverages and the concepts what's good and what's not where
- 8:08Speaker 6: and maybe you want to stand in and take a
- 8:09Speaker 6: hit and make a throw, or.
- 8:11Speaker 8: Get out of the pocket and try to make a play.
- 8:14Speaker 6: So I feel like I'm processing pretty well right now.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Joe.
- 8:17Speaker 5: You were down to just four receivers in the roster
- 8:19Speaker 5: for this football game. Kasiki was basically like your fifth
- 8:22Speaker 5: and he had one hundred yards twenty yards a catch
- 8:25Speaker 5: for you. But it didn't matter. I mean, just four guys.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Do you go out and have, you know, one of
- 8:31Speaker 5: your best days of your career. How do you explain that?
- 8:34Speaker 6: Yeah, we had guys step up. You know, Kendrick made
- 8:37Speaker 6: a big catch. Mike obviously stepped up today. Andre made
- 8:41Speaker 6: a couple of big plays. Chase ran the ball and
- 8:45Speaker 6: caught the ball really well. He had a couple of
- 8:46Speaker 6: unbelievable plays in the past game two, So it's nice
- 8:50Speaker 6: to have that one.
- 8:51Speaker 5: You seem down the stretch of the football game to
- 8:54Speaker 5: show up. Some frustration we repeeved about the pick six.
- 8:57Speaker 8: Was that the deal isn't good enough. It wasn't good
- 9:01Speaker 8: enough in the second half. You know, well, we're not
- 9:04Speaker 8: going to be the.
- 9:04Speaker 6: Best teams in the league when we play like that
- 9:07Speaker 6: in the second half.
- 9:08Speaker 8: You know we're able to find a way, but.
- 9:10Speaker 3: It needs to be better. How big is it to
- 9:13Speaker 3: have Chase Brown going downhill?
- 9:15Speaker 5: I mean north and south, running between the tackles, the
- 9:17Speaker 5: running game. Basically the last four games of last in
- 9:21Speaker 5: the NFL, not today.
- 9:22Speaker 6: Yeah, he's just gonna continue to get better and better.
- 9:25Speaker 8: You know what.
- 9:26Speaker 9: We got movement up front today and so hopefully we
- 9:29Speaker 9: can keep that going and then get a quick turnaround. Joe,
- 9:32Speaker 9: how do you how do you take care of your body?
- 9:34Speaker 9: What do you do when you have a quick turnaround?
- 9:35Speaker 9: You gotta play Thursday night against Baltimore on the road.
- 9:37Speaker 3: Yeah, you gotta get your sleep.
- 9:39Speaker 6: You gotta eat right, you gotta get whatever your routine is.
- 9:43Speaker 6: You gotta speed that up because you only got basically
- 9:46Speaker 6: two days to to get that right before before you travel.
- 9:51Speaker 6: So I have a good process going. I know guys
- 9:54Speaker 6: have done that before. Try to get the young guys.
- 9:56Speaker 8: To understand how quick this turnaround is going to be,
- 9:58Speaker 8: and we'll get it going.
- 9:59Speaker 3: In credit.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Man, you made a bunch of really good decisions out
- 10:04Speaker 5: there and forty one points nothing to sneeze. That hard
- 10:06Speaker 5: to do against any team in the NFL. Man.
- 10:08Speaker 8: Thanks.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Jamar Chase led the Bengals with seven catches, but Mike
- 10:13Speaker 1: Gasiki led the team in receiving yards. He had one
- 10:16Speaker 1: hundred on five receptions and there was so much open
- 10:20Speaker 1: field on his forty seven yard touchdown grabbing the fourth
- 10:22Speaker 1: quarter that Mike said his wife Hallie would have scored
- 10:26Speaker 1: as well. He also pointed out that she's a good athlete.
- 10:30Speaker 1: It was the third one hundred yard game of Gasiki's career,
- 10:33Speaker 1: and it was the first time that Chase Brown has
- 10:36Speaker 1: topped one hundred rushing yards. He finished with a buck
- 10:39Speaker 1: twenty on twenty seven carries and added five catches for
- 10:43Speaker 1: thirty seven more yards. On defense, Trey Hendrickson made a
- 10:48Speaker 1: strong case for AFC Defensive Player of the Week with
- 10:51Speaker 1: a career high four sacks, seven QB hits and a
- 10:55Speaker 1: forced fumble, and he could have had another one that
- 10:58Speaker 1: was ruled an incomplete. As for the Raiders, they're great
- 11:02Speaker 1: pass rusher. Max Crosby got shut out, at least in
- 11:05Speaker 1: the sack department. He did manage to hit Joe Burrow
- 11:08Speaker 1: three times for if you include a roughing the passer
- 11:12Speaker 1: penalty after he was already off sides, but Crosby did
- 11:16Speaker 1: not have a dominant performance against rookie of Marius Mims.
- 11:20Speaker 1: I talked to the Bengals young right tackle after the game.
- 11:24Speaker 10: Marius.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Four sacks for Trey Hendrickson today, none for Max Crosby.
- 11:29Speaker 1: How does that make you feel?
- 11:30Speaker 4: It?
- 11:30Speaker 11: Feels good, especially with the four sacks on Trade Park.
- 11:33Speaker 11: That Man's a demon. Nobody I just feel like Man
- 11:35Speaker 11: when he's one hundred percent, nobody can block him. Mind,
- 11:37Speaker 11: he's one of the best I've ever seen. Man in
- 11:38Speaker 11: the NFL said, I'm just so glad he's on my team.
- 11:40Speaker 11: I'm beyonest with you, Man, I'm glad. I'm glad he's
- 11:42Speaker 11: part of my team. I'm glad he's part of I said,
- 11:45Speaker 11: I'm part of like helping us wain Man and I said,
- 11:46Speaker 11: you had a great game and we just gotta keep
- 11:48Speaker 11: building on it.
- 11:48Speaker 1: I mean, guys said during the week a big he
- 11:51Speaker 1: is just not letting Max Crosby destroy the game.
- 11:55Speaker 3: He had a few wins.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Of course he's going to, but you did not let
- 11:59Speaker 1: him have a dominant performance.
- 12:01Speaker 11: And Man's testament to the old line, man testament to coaching,
- 12:03Speaker 11: you know, having a good game.
- 12:05Speaker 10: Plan, just trusting it. Like I said, I think, I
- 12:08Speaker 10: think my tight ends.
- 12:08Speaker 11: But the chips they helped me with the running back
- 12:10Speaker 11: a couple of times, and like I said, Man, but
- 12:12Speaker 11: most of the time, it was like I felt like
- 12:14Speaker 11: it was one on one and I just shot to
- 12:15Speaker 11: you know, try to not get outside of myself to
- 12:17Speaker 11: try to play with the great technique.
- 12:18Speaker 10: Try to play a long and try to like disrupt
- 12:20Speaker 10: this game.
- 12:20Speaker 4: Man.
- 12:20Speaker 11: But like I said, Man, it's a great it's a
- 12:22Speaker 11: great game plan we had from Coach Taylor and coach Pinchman.
- 12:25Speaker 1: So that's testament to them which stood out about facing him.
- 12:28Speaker 10: Man, that dude is not he has a motor. He
- 12:29Speaker 10: does not stopped.
- 12:30Speaker 11: Like I said, he's definitely the one of the most
- 12:32Speaker 11: active and best players I've ever played against. Man, and
- 12:34Speaker 11: I don't played a lot of football, but overall, he's
- 12:36Speaker 11: the probably one of the best players ever played against.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Unfortunately, doesn't stop people on these off side.
- 12:41Speaker 10: He took a shot at jab Man. I was just
- 12:43Speaker 10: kind of confused. I thought they blew a whistle over early.
- 12:45Speaker 10: But I saw him.
- 12:45Speaker 11: I was like in my tripp and I thought I
- 12:48Speaker 11: was like, I thought it was a mombore. I'm like,
- 12:49Speaker 11: I can't believe it happened. There was more shocked than
- 12:51Speaker 11: me because I feel like they brew a whistle pretty rad.
- 12:53Speaker 1: We're chatting to the Marius snms. What did it need
- 12:56Speaker 1: to not only win, but to dominate for the first time?
- 12:59Speaker 10: It felt.
- 13:00Speaker 11: Yeah, Man, that's a great a great first home win. Man,
- 13:02Speaker 11: we just gotta keep building on it. Man, Like I said,
- 13:03Speaker 11: We've got a lot of games left, but we just
- 13:04Speaker 11: gotta keep building this right here is the building, Bark
- 13:06Speaker 11: And I said, it's part in the home games, first
- 13:08Speaker 11: first home team win. It's great, man, So we gotta
- 13:10Speaker 11: keep building on it.
- 13:11Speaker 1: One hundred and twenty rushing yards for Chase Brown, his
- 13:14Speaker 1: first one hundred yard rushing performance.
- 13:15Speaker 4: In the NFL.
- 13:16Speaker 1: That's what you guys have been looking to do to
- 13:18Speaker 1: get the running game to go to go to that
- 13:20Speaker 1: extent one hundred percent.
- 13:21Speaker 10: Man, we knew, we knew going in this game. Man,
- 13:23Speaker 10: we want we wanted to run the ball a little bit. No,
- 13:25Speaker 10: we want to pound that rock.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Man.
- 13:26Speaker 11: And I said, we got a great running back and
- 13:27Speaker 11: Chase and I'm just glad he got, you know, show
- 13:29Speaker 11: the world what he can do.
- 13:30Speaker 4: Man.
- 13:30Speaker 11: So I said, it's testament to the old line of course,
- 13:32Speaker 11: testament to the coach. Coach Paulock called, and the runs,
- 13:35Speaker 11: and then testament to him you don't hit it downhill
- 13:37Speaker 11: and making those big plays.
- 13:38Speaker 1: I touchdown passes for Joe, second time he's done that
- 13:41Speaker 1: this year. I mean, he is playing at an extremely
- 13:44Speaker 1: high level.
- 13:45Speaker 10: Joe is gonna be Joe. He's one of the best
- 13:47Speaker 10: of the NFL.
- 13:47Speaker 11: And that's why, like I say, it doesn't a problem, man,
- 13:49Speaker 11: he's one of the greatest. I'll watch him work, he said.
- 13:51Speaker 11: Like I said, he's a great leader, and like I say,
- 13:53Speaker 11: it doesn't surprise the bat and he can do that
- 13:54Speaker 11: every day. I feel like.
- 13:56Speaker 1: So normally, when you win a game at any level,
- 13:58Speaker 1: you got the twenty four hour rule, you get to it,
- 14:00Speaker 1: joy it for twenty four hours. From what I'm hearing,
- 14:02Speaker 1: this is more like the twenty four minute rule. You
- 14:05Speaker 1: got to play Baltimore on Thursday.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:06Speaker 10: Man, that's the great part about NFL.
- 14:08Speaker 7: Man.
- 14:08Speaker 11: Always you know Osby ready, no matter what, Man, it's
- 14:11Speaker 11: gonna be a long season.
- 14:12Speaker 10: And like I said, it just happens.
- 14:13Speaker 4: We played.
- 14:14Speaker 11: We played on Thursday, So we're gonna come in tomorrow,
- 14:16Speaker 11: see what we did wrong, correct it, and then let's
- 14:18Speaker 11: move on.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Man, there won't there won't be that many games where
- 14:21Speaker 1: Crosby doesn't have a sack. That was the case today.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Congratulations times, job.
- 14:24Speaker 10: Well done, I appreciation.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Okay, time to talk about another rookie, Jermaine Burton. With
- 14:31Speaker 1: t Higgins out, Burton was expected to play a significant
- 14:34Speaker 1: role on Sunday, but was not on the active roster.
- 14:38Speaker 1: According to the NFL Z and Rappaport, Burton missed the
- 14:41Speaker 1: Bengals walk through on Saturday. And it's no secret that
- 14:44Speaker 1: Jermaine's attention to detail and professionalism has lapsed at times
- 14:49Speaker 1: this year. Let's hear from Zach Taylor. We spent a
- 14:52Speaker 1: few minutes with Dave Lapham after the game.
- 14:56Speaker 3: Big win, Coach, big win.
- 14:57Speaker 5: Youang forty one points on any in the National Football League.
- 15:01Speaker 12: That's a heck of an accomplishment. Yeah, it was a
- 15:04Speaker 12: good way to finish. Proud of us in all three
- 15:07Speaker 12: phases at big stretches in the game. Still some things
- 15:09Speaker 12: we can clean up, which is encouraging when you win
- 15:12Speaker 12: a game like that and you still feel like there's
- 15:14Speaker 12: there's a lot more you left on the field.
- 15:15Speaker 3: But excited to get a win.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Man.
- 15:17Speaker 12: We got to enjoy its toughness league and we know that.
- 15:19Speaker 12: And so I was onto a big THURSDA night game.
- 15:21Speaker 5: To get that first home win at pay Court and
- 15:24Speaker 5: reward the fans.
- 15:25Speaker 3: That had to be pleasurable as well.
- 15:27Speaker 12: It's been too long, you know, it shouldn't take five
- 15:29Speaker 12: games to do that, Proud of the turnout, proud of
- 15:31Speaker 12: them supporting us. Could feel the energy in a very
- 15:33Speaker 12: positive way, and I glad our guys responded the right way.
- 15:36Speaker 5: Second half of the Raiders, they had two fumbles, they
- 15:39Speaker 5: had three punts, and they were stopping on downs in
- 15:42Speaker 5: six possessions and your defense just slammed the door.
- 15:44Speaker 3: They did.
- 15:45Speaker 12: They did a great job, you know, And really the
- 15:47Speaker 12: first drive was really positive. I felt like we got
- 15:49Speaker 12: a third and ten stop there that turned into a DPI,
- 15:52Speaker 12: which is the way it goes sometimes on some tough
- 15:53Speaker 12: plays for SKOD opponents. But after that drive, I thought
- 15:56Speaker 12: they really buckled down and got us some turnovers, limited
- 15:58Speaker 12: the points on the board, and the often to be aggressive.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Your first five possessions, five scores, four touchdowns in a
- 16:04Speaker 5: field goal. The four touchdowns were all in the red zone.
- 16:07Speaker 5: You came into the game sixty seven percent in the
- 16:09Speaker 5: red zone, tied for fifth best in the league, and
- 16:11Speaker 5: go four for four at that point it was four
- 16:14Speaker 5: to four. Might even worked out better than that. I mean,
- 16:16Speaker 5: what is it about your red zone execution? Are guys
- 16:19Speaker 5: believe in what we're doing.
- 16:20Speaker 12: Joe's not afraid to extend plays when the concept's not
- 16:23Speaker 12: there and guys get on the same page with them.
- 16:25Speaker 12: I thought we rained the ball well down there to
- 16:27Speaker 12: put us in a position to throw it in. So
- 16:30Speaker 12: just prout of the overall execution.
- 16:31Speaker 5: There in the second half, the first four possessions for
- 16:35Speaker 5: the Raiders fumble, three and out, three and out, three
- 16:38Speaker 5: and out. When you're calling plays, you know, as an
- 16:41Speaker 5: offensive coach and the defense is doing that, what goes
- 16:44Speaker 5: through your mind.
- 16:44Speaker 12: I couldn't get my thoughts together fast enough, you know,
- 16:47Speaker 12: to get the next plays for the next drive.
- 16:48Speaker 10: And that's a great problem to have when.
- 16:50Speaker 12: You feel like you're just burning through plays because the
- 16:52Speaker 12: defense has given you so many opportunities. And so here's
- 16:55Speaker 12: a good feeling to have.
- 16:56Speaker 5: So your quarterback throws five touchdown passes height end slash
- 17:00Speaker 5: wide receiver he averages twenty yards to catch five catches
- 17:05Speaker 5: for one hundred yards. You're running back goes for other
- 17:08Speaker 5: hundred and twenty. He has catches for thirty plus more
- 17:11Speaker 5: so he's over one hundred and fifty scrimmage yards.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Pretty darn good day.
- 17:14Speaker 12: And we left some drives out there. You know, there
- 17:16Speaker 12: was three drives. I know for a fact, that we
- 17:19Speaker 12: felt like there was more meat on the bone there
- 17:20Speaker 12: that we didn't capitalize on. And I'll give us something
- 17:23Speaker 12: to clean up, you know, to be at our best,
- 17:25Speaker 12: which we're going to need to be this Thursday.
- 17:27Speaker 3: So, coach, I mean gun hammered all game long.
- 17:29Speaker 5: Jermaine Burton was a healthy scratch and we're told that
- 17:33Speaker 5: you have something to say after the football game about it?
- 17:36Speaker 12: What can you tell us about that. We're going to
- 17:37Speaker 12: help him through it. You know, he's we believe in him.
- 17:40Speaker 12: We're going to continue to give him opportunities as he
- 17:42Speaker 12: earns it. We expect our guys to hold up to
- 17:47Speaker 12: a professional standard that we've had for this team and
- 17:49Speaker 12: this organization, and we're going to help him get there.
- 17:51Speaker 5: So is it just a matter of maturity not just
- 17:53Speaker 5: on the football field, but off the football field as well,
- 17:56Speaker 5: doing everything you need to do to be a professional.
- 17:58Speaker 3: That's a good way to put up sums it up, well, coach.
- 18:02Speaker 5: The thing is when when you only had four wide
- 18:05Speaker 5: receivers active for the football game and Gasicki he's you know,
- 18:09Speaker 5: he's kind of a hybrid guy. But for guys to
- 18:11Speaker 5: step up like they did in your quarterback to believe
- 18:14Speaker 5: in him, and they believe in him like they did.
- 18:17Speaker 3: That's a great sign, isn't it.
- 18:18Speaker 12: Yeah, we have enough to be successful, you know, And
- 18:20Speaker 12: whether that's on the active roster of the practice squad,
- 18:24Speaker 12: the way that we believe in our guys, anybody can
- 18:26Speaker 12: step up and Kennrick pryor he gets an opportunity to
- 18:28Speaker 12: come his way, he makes the play. Can be Devin
- 18:30Speaker 12: Cochran coming in for a snap on a touchdown play
- 18:33Speaker 12: and stepping up. And these guys have been coached well
- 18:36Speaker 12: and they're ready for their moment.
- 18:38Speaker 5: They going a touchdown drive to start the game. But then, man,
- 18:41Speaker 5: I mean, you know nothing. I mean the defense just
- 18:43Speaker 5: says what what was? Were there any adjustments or was
- 18:45Speaker 5: it just a matter of guys, Look, let's just do
- 18:47Speaker 5: our jobs a little bit.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Do your job, you do it, do it to a
- 18:50Speaker 3: higher level. Is that all it was? Yeah?
- 18:51Speaker 12: You know, they got us in a couple two semi
- 18:54Speaker 12: explosive passes there and we had the third and ten
- 18:58Speaker 12: the DPI that kind of was a kick and they
- 19:00Speaker 12: got there for a moment. But you got to buck
- 19:01Speaker 12: up respond and most times we do. But I just
- 19:04Speaker 12: thought they did a good job gathering themselves after that
- 19:06Speaker 12: drive and making some big stops.
- 19:08Speaker 5: That defense is the only team in the NFL that
- 19:10Speaker 5: has not given up a play of forty yards or more. So,
- 19:13Speaker 5: you know, they keep everything in front of them, the
- 19:15Speaker 5: way that you just play after play. Took care of
- 19:19Speaker 5: the football. Other than the pick six. I mean, Joe
- 19:22Speaker 5: just talked to Joe. He's so mad about the pick six.
- 19:25Speaker 5: He doesn't even care about the five touchdowns. I mean,
- 19:27Speaker 5: he's so so agitated about that. But I mean the way,
- 19:31Speaker 5: you guys, the way he sees it, the way he
- 19:33Speaker 5: gets everybody involved, it's the thing of beauty.
- 19:35Speaker 3: It is.
- 19:35Speaker 12: There's no doubt, and we're lucky to have him, and
- 19:37Speaker 12: we're going to continue to lean on him and he's
- 19:39Speaker 12: going to continue to play well for us.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Up next the Thursday night game in Baltimore against the
- 19:45Speaker 1: six and three Ravens, who'll be Denver on Sunday, forty
- 19:48Speaker 1: one to ten. This is the third straight year that
- 19:51Speaker 1: the Bengals have had to play a night game in Baltimore,
- 19:54Speaker 1: and the second straight year it's been on a Thursday.
- 19:58Speaker 1: That is a significant disadvance. The Bengals Booth Podcast is

- 20:18Speaker 1: healthcare provider of the Bengals. Now time for the radio
- 20:22Speaker 1: guys recap lap. The Bengals not only got their first
- 20:26Speaker 1: home win of the year, they had their best all
- 20:29Speaker 1: around performance, winning forty one to twenty four. What things
- 20:32Speaker 1: stood out the most to you about this win?
- 20:35Speaker 5: You know, I thought the defense was extraordinary. Second half
- 20:41Speaker 5: possessions for the Raiders two fumbles, three punts in stop
- 20:44Speaker 5: on downs, I mean. And then offensively in the first
- 20:48Speaker 5: half their first five possessions, five scores, four touchdowns, fuel goal,
- 20:53Speaker 5: all the touchdowns on the red zone four for four
- 20:55Speaker 5: they are so, I mean, it was a complete game,
- 20:59Speaker 5: maybe in different spurts, but each phase supported the other.
- 21:03Speaker 5: So we're looking for that, you know, that complete game
- 21:08Speaker 5: where offense, defense, special teams, everybody just stepped up. And
- 21:12Speaker 5: I thought this game was the closest one they've had
- 21:14Speaker 5: all year.
- 21:15Speaker 1: They didn't have Orlando Brown junior, and they didn't have
- 21:18Speaker 1: a lot of their offensive weapons. But I want to
- 21:20Speaker 1: focus on the line because Cody Ford started at left tackle,
- 21:24Speaker 1: A Marius Mims spent most of the day trying to
- 21:26Speaker 1: block Max Crosby. He didn't have a sack. Joe Burrow
- 21:30Speaker 1: threw five touchdown passes. They had one hundred yard rusher,
- 21:32Speaker 1: one hundred yard receiver. That's a great job up front.
- 21:35Speaker 5: It is, it really is. I mean I thought they
- 21:38Speaker 5: rose to the occasion. I thought Joe Burrow was extraordinary
- 21:42Speaker 5: getting the ball out of his hand quickly. Man, it's
- 21:45Speaker 5: offensive lineman. That's your best friend when your quarterback gets
- 21:48Speaker 5: it out and gets it out now. And he also
- 21:51Speaker 5: did a good job manipulating the pocket you know at
- 21:53Speaker 5: times as well, but other times, you know, he stood
- 21:56Speaker 5: in the pocket and they gave him great protection. So again,
- 21:59Speaker 5: a complete foremance. You know, Joe supported his line when
- 22:02Speaker 5: they needed help. The line supported him when he needed help.
- 22:05Speaker 5: You know, that's what you're looking for. And again, I
- 22:08Speaker 5: think as a result of all that we're talking about,
- 22:10Speaker 5: it's most you know, complete team victory of the season
- 22:14Speaker 5: by far.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Chase Brown must have felt like he was back at Illinois,
- 22:17Speaker 1: getting thirty two touches. That was the norm for him
- 22:20Speaker 1: his final year there more than one hundred and fifty
- 22:22Speaker 1: combined rushing and receiving yards. And you were salivating on
- 22:26Speaker 1: occasion by the way he was attacking when he got
- 22:28Speaker 1: the ball.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:29Speaker 5: I mean, he is so explosive. His first step quickness
- 22:31Speaker 5: is unbelievable, and I mean when he comes downhill, he
- 22:36Speaker 5: is down hill means business. And I just love that.
- 22:41Speaker 5: I mean, he gets to the line of scrimmage in
- 22:43Speaker 5: a hiccup and then makes you know that first Greek
- 22:46Speaker 5: cut and he's at that second level before they know
- 22:49Speaker 5: what's coming. I really, I really respect his game, you know.
- 22:53Speaker 5: And he had a twenty one yard run and was
- 22:56Speaker 5: good to see that. In the last month, they've been
- 22:59Speaker 5: ned last nay Fell rush in the football, so it
- 23:01Speaker 5: was good to see them not only run the football,
- 23:03Speaker 5: but where they ran it. Now they ran it. It
- 23:05Speaker 5: was downhill between the tackles, quick hitters, get on your guy,
- 23:10Speaker 5: Your move that guy his body out of there a
- 23:12Speaker 5: little bit and let the running back do the rest.
- 23:15Speaker 5: And I thought that it was well executed and well
- 23:18Speaker 5: schemed and well executed.
- 23:20Speaker 1: The Raiders left tackle went down their backup left tackle
- 23:23Speaker 1: went down. Hello, Trey Hendrickson.
- 23:27Speaker 5: Trey and Joe Burrow five touchdown passes ties his best
- 23:33Speaker 5: of his career. Trey Hendrickson four sacks, the best of
- 23:36Speaker 5: his career. And I mean the poor tackles. I felt
- 23:40Speaker 5: sorry for the guys because you know, it's it's a
- 23:43Speaker 5: situation where you can't win. Munford he's in trouble. I mean,
- 23:47Speaker 5: he get bold. Now, when you get bold, man, that's
- 23:50Speaker 5: a bad feeling for an offensive lineman. Now it's like
- 23:54Speaker 5: you're gonna set real hard and he gets the edge
- 23:55Speaker 5: on you, and it's like, oh no, do when I
- 23:58Speaker 5: set soft, you're gonna bull me.
- 23:59Speaker 10: Do I set hard and firm? You know he's going
- 24:01Speaker 10: to quick me.
- 24:02Speaker 5: And he was in trouble And the reason that he
- 24:05Speaker 5: was in trouble is because he was going against the
- 24:08Speaker 5: guy far superior. He shouldn't have been in that football game,
- 24:10Speaker 5: but because of the other injuries, he was. And I'm
- 24:13Speaker 5: sure it was Oh man, the NFL, it's the real deal,
- 24:17Speaker 5: Trey Henderson. Yeah, this guy's legit. But Trey was doing
- 24:20Speaker 5: well against everybody. He had just hit one of those
- 24:22Speaker 5: games where he was a dominant force. And I'll tell
- 24:26Speaker 5: you if I'm a tackle though. Some of those quote
- 24:29Speaker 5: chips that backs were doing, they weren't even laying a
- 24:32Speaker 5: finger on them. I mean, it's like, at least chip them.
- 24:35Speaker 5: If you're asigned to chip them, at least hit them
- 24:37Speaker 5: before you go out for your route. That's what you're
- 24:39Speaker 5: supposed to do, is rewrite them a little bit. For me,
- 24:42Speaker 5: it was a joke. I mean, if they didn't come
- 24:44Speaker 5: up field wide where the running back was, they just
- 24:46Speaker 5: continued down the field on their pass rush. So I think,
- 24:51Speaker 5: you know, that's coaching too as much as anything. But
- 24:54Speaker 5: their running backs were not very good in terms of
- 24:56Speaker 5: supporting their tackles in that pass protection.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I know you spoke to Joe Burrow after the game.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Late in the game, you were watching him on the sideline,
- 25:05Speaker 1: and it was your impression that he was so upset
- 25:07Speaker 1: about that pick six that he almost couldn't even enjoy
- 25:10Speaker 1: his five touchdown passes. Did you get the sense that
- 25:14Speaker 1: that was true from talking to him after the game, Yeah.
- 25:17Speaker 5: Pretty much, you know, and he said not good enough
- 25:19Speaker 5: in the second half, of course, that's when his pick
- 25:22Speaker 5: six occurred. He's just, you know, expects so much of himself.
- 25:28Speaker 5: He's such a competitor. He expects high level performance and
- 25:33Speaker 5: when there's anything that deters that, man, he just he's
- 25:38Speaker 5: not a fan. So it's very interesting. And I thought,
- 25:43Speaker 5: you know, he distributed the ball to all the weapons
- 25:46Speaker 5: that he had. He only had four receivers and then
- 25:48Speaker 5: Kasicki's a receiver. I mean, hacky really is. But guys
- 25:52Speaker 5: made plays. Guys had the first catches of their careers.
- 25:56Speaker 5: Kasecki averaged twenty yards a catch on five catches. I
- 25:59Speaker 5: mean different touchdown Different guys had touchdown catches. I mean,
- 26:02Speaker 5: was it was well done, well executed, and he just
- 26:06Speaker 5: sees it so fast and you can just get the
- 26:09Speaker 5: ball out of his hands so quickly, and a couple
- 26:11Speaker 5: of times I think it surprises receivers. And I think
- 26:14Speaker 5: he might have even said the receivers at some point
- 26:16Speaker 5: during the game, get your heads around. It's coming out quick, man,
- 26:20Speaker 5: coming out quick. Crosby and the boys are coming so
- 26:23Speaker 5: and I remember Kenny would do that. You know, it'd
- 26:25Speaker 5: be like if we were going against a really good
- 26:27Speaker 5: pass rushing team, say the receivers, guys, get your heads around,
- 26:31Speaker 5: the ball's coming man. I'm not holding on to that sucker.
- 26:34Speaker 5: So Joe performed at an exceptional level. There's no doubt.
- 26:37Speaker 1: After he talked to him in the locker room, he
- 26:39Speaker 1: did his usual postgame news conference and it went on
- 26:41Speaker 1: for a long time. Today. Zach Taylor waited for him
- 26:45Speaker 1: after that, which seemed kind of unusual to me, and
- 26:48Speaker 1: I wonder if he just wanted to tell him something
- 26:50Speaker 1: along the lines of, hey, you can enjoy this. I
- 26:52Speaker 1: know the second half wasn't up to your standards, especially
- 26:56Speaker 1: with that pick six, but you did throw five touchdown
- 26:58Speaker 1: passes and we scored forty one points, right right.
- 27:01Speaker 5: I mean I think I think sometimes, you know, even
- 27:07Speaker 5: though you think, do I really need to do that? Yeah,
- 27:10Speaker 5: it's good to do that. I think Joe appreciates it.
- 27:12Speaker 5: Joe doesn't need it, he's not looking for it. But
- 27:15Speaker 5: I think when it's done, I think he really does
- 27:17Speaker 5: appreciate it. And I think it's like, yeah, you know,
- 27:20Speaker 5: a little reality check.
- 27:22Speaker 3: I did.
- 27:22Speaker 5: Okay, things were things were pretty good. But man, I mean,
- 27:26Speaker 5: I just I just love the competitive fire in that guy. Man,
- 27:29Speaker 5: it burns so intensely.
- 27:31Speaker 3: He is.
- 27:31Speaker 5: Uh, he's one of one in a lot of different areas,
- 27:35Speaker 5: both tangible and intangible. He is He's made of all
- 27:39Speaker 5: the right stuff. He really is, and you know it's
- 27:44Speaker 5: I thought it was interesting at the end of the
- 27:46Speaker 5: football game Burton went over to him by the bench
- 27:49Speaker 5: area and it was you know, it wasn't it wasn't
- 27:55Speaker 5: you know, Kumbay our time. So, I mean, Burton has
- 27:59Speaker 5: a lot of growing up to do, he really does.
- 28:02Speaker 5: And I think Joe's going to help him. I think
- 28:03Speaker 5: the coaching staff's going to help him. His other teammates
- 28:06Speaker 5: are going to help him. But it's up to Burton, man,
- 28:09Speaker 5: It's up to him. He has to realize this is
- 28:12Speaker 5: the National Football League. You have to be accountable for
- 28:15Speaker 5: all of your actions on off the football field in
- 28:19Speaker 5: every way, shape or form. There's no multiple sets of rules.
- 28:25Speaker 5: You're not going to get treated differently. And I mean
- 28:30Speaker 5: it's unfortunate because honestly, I bet if he played today
- 28:33Speaker 5: would have a big game. And here's a guy that
- 28:36Speaker 5: you know, they were like the fact how he's coming along,
- 28:40Speaker 5: he didn't have any missed assignments in the game before,
- 28:42Speaker 5: prepared for the game, and then down the stretch at
- 28:46Speaker 5: the end of the week, you know, self destructs. Very
- 28:50Speaker 5: very unfortunate and hopefully lesson learned.
- 28:53Speaker 1: All right, So bring on the Ravens Thursday Night football
- 28:56Speaker 1: this week. Lamar Jackson at a perfect passer rating to
- 29:00Speaker 1: and three touchdown passes. Derrick Henry ran for more than
- 29:03Speaker 1: one hundred yards. He's on a pace for more than
- 29:04Speaker 1: two thousand this season. I think as a team they're
- 29:07Speaker 1: ravaging more than six yards a run for the season,
- 29:10Speaker 1: which is ridiculous. But the Bengal should have beaten him
- 29:12Speaker 1: the first time around. Every guy in that locker room
- 29:15Speaker 1: knows they can go to Baltimore and win this week.
- 29:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, it was a tract meet the last time,
- 29:20Speaker 5: and it's going to be. You know, the way the
- 29:24Speaker 5: Baltimore Ravens handle things offensively, they not only score on
- 29:29Speaker 5: multiple possessions, they don't give you the ball. It takes
- 29:32Speaker 5: them a long time to score on those possessions because
- 29:35Speaker 5: they run the ball so well. So you feel so
- 29:37Speaker 5: much pressure to handle score points, handle every possession successfully.
- 29:43Speaker 5: It's almost like if you punt, oh man, it's worse.
- 29:46Speaker 5: It's like a turnover. I can't give the football up.
- 29:49Speaker 5: And that's the way the first game unfolded. So you
- 29:53Speaker 5: end up starting to count possessions and you're wondering if
- 29:56Speaker 5: it's going down the stretch and there's eight minutes to play,
- 29:58Speaker 5: and they have the football. When are we going to
- 30:00Speaker 5: get it back? Are we going to get it back?
- 30:02Speaker 5: How much time it's going to be on the clock
- 30:04Speaker 5: when we get it back, all of those kinds of things. So,
- 30:07Speaker 5: but they know each other so well. They've always had
- 30:11Speaker 5: very very competitive football games. Two of the best quarterbacks,
- 30:15Speaker 5: not only in the division, but in the National Football
- 30:18Speaker 5: League and in the history of the National Football League. So,
- 30:22Speaker 5: I mean, they had an instant classic in the first matchup.
- 30:26Speaker 5: So you tend to expect that number two on national
- 30:30Speaker 5: television Thursday Night Football. It's going to bring the best
- 30:34Speaker 5: out in both of those guys and their teammates.
- 30:36Speaker 1: Again, water, tea and rest, my friend.
- 30:41Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm telling you, it's that time of the year.
- 30:44Speaker 5: I get about to the midpoint and I think my
- 30:47Speaker 5: vocal cords are older than a lot of the rest
- 30:49Speaker 5: of my body. They've been used so much and they
- 30:51Speaker 5: just say, what the hell are you doing to me?
- 30:55Speaker 1: My Thanks to Lap for gutting it out despite the
- 30:58Speaker 1: scratchy throat. It's time for this week's fun fact segment,
- 31:03Speaker 1: where you get to know the person under the pads.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Time for some fun facts of Bengals wide receivers coach
- 31:10Speaker 1: Troy Walters coach in nineteen eighty four, when you were
- 31:13Speaker 1: seven years old, your dad, Trent, was on the Bengals
- 31:17Speaker 1: coaching staff under first year head coach Sam Whitch. Do
- 31:20Speaker 1: you have any memories of the nineteen eighty four Bengals.
- 31:24Speaker 13: Not so much of the season, but I do remember
- 31:26Speaker 13: my favorite player was Ray Horton. I remember Halloween, I
- 31:30Speaker 13: dressed up in a twenties Bengals jersey and helmet because
- 31:34Speaker 13: that was his number. So I do remember that he
- 31:38Speaker 13: was my favorite guy, and that Halloween I dressed up
- 31:41Speaker 13: as him and got a lot of candy.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Your dad spent the next twelve years coaching in the
- 31:47Speaker 1: NFL for the Vikings and the Eagles. He also had
- 31:50Speaker 1: college coaching stops at Notre Dame in Texas, A and
- 31:52Speaker 1: M and some other great schools. Did that fuel your
- 31:56Speaker 1: interest in the coaching life.
- 31:57Speaker 7: It really did.
- 31:58Speaker 13: Growing up around the game, I knew I wanted to
- 32:01Speaker 13: be a part of it. Uh after my playing days
- 32:04Speaker 13: was over, I wanted to play to the you know,
- 32:06Speaker 13: as long as I could at the highest level, and
- 32:08Speaker 13: I was blessed to play eight years in the NFL,
- 32:11Speaker 13: and so I knew I wanted to stay around the game.
- 32:13Speaker 13: I wasn't sure front office, general manager. And then, uh,
- 32:17Speaker 13: you know, towards the end of my playing career, I
- 32:19Speaker 13: really wanted to become a coach. Wanted to give back
- 32:22Speaker 13: to the players and and and and be a be
- 32:25Speaker 13: a tool that allowed guys to be successful in his craft.
- 32:28Speaker 13: And so once my playing days were over, I took
- 32:31Speaker 13: a year off actually coach the Pop Warner football team
- 32:33Speaker 13: in Arizona. Fell in love with coaching those guys, and
- 32:36Speaker 13: and uh, the following year, I started my coaching journey
- 32:39Speaker 13: at Indiana State.
- 32:41Speaker 1: We're visiting with Troy Walters. You did have a great
- 32:43Speaker 1: playing career, but is it true that you only had
- 32:46Speaker 1: one scholarship offer.
- 32:48Speaker 7: Yeah, I did.
- 32:49Speaker 13: That was the University of Tulsa, and and that was
- 32:53Speaker 13: non committable. So they had two or three other receivers
- 32:55Speaker 13: that they were waiting to see what they were going
- 32:57Speaker 13: to do before they had accept my commitment.
- 32:59Speaker 7: So I took a trip there.
- 33:00Speaker 13: I took a trip to Sam Houston State and then
- 33:04Speaker 13: you know, just I'm a man of faith, so God
- 33:06Speaker 13: just works incredible ways. With my dad going in my
- 33:09Speaker 13: junior going in my senior year, he got a job
- 33:11Speaker 13: with the Minnesota Vikings. And so my senior year I'm
- 33:14Speaker 13: in Texas playing in college station. My dad's in Minnesota,
- 33:18Speaker 13: and Tyrone Willingham was on the staff with the Vikings
- 33:21Speaker 13: that year and the following year Stanford job came open.
- 33:24Speaker 13: Tyron Willingham got the job. He believed in me, knew
- 33:28Speaker 13: what I could do, saw me a training camp, and
- 33:30Speaker 13: offered me a scholarship, and the rest is history.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Certainly worked out well at Stanford. It's been twenty five
- 33:36Speaker 1: years since you played there, but you are still the
- 33:38Speaker 1: school's all time record holder and catches and receiving yards.
- 33:41Speaker 1: You also earned two degrees at Stanford, including a master's.
- 33:45Speaker 1: What was the highlight of your Stanford experience.
- 33:49Speaker 13: Man, Probably the last year being able to play in
- 33:52Speaker 13: a Rose but win in the Pac ten. At the time,
- 33:55Speaker 13: you know, going into that last season, ninety nine season,
- 33:57Speaker 13: we were ranked I think eight out of ten. Preseason,
- 34:00Speaker 13: we lost our first game to Texas sixty two to
- 34:04Speaker 13: seventeen or something like that, and we got in the
- 34:07Speaker 13: locker room and Tyron Willingham said that we've got a
- 34:09Speaker 13: champion in this locker room and we were looking around
- 34:12Speaker 13: like what is he talking about? But that year we
- 34:14Speaker 13: went on and won to Pack ten played in the
- 34:16Speaker 13: Rose Bowl. So in order to you know, the opportunity
- 34:19Speaker 13: to play in the Rose Bowl my last season, my
- 34:21Speaker 13: last game, and just all the memories of that season
- 34:25Speaker 13: with the players was tremendous. And yeah, the twenty fifth
- 34:29Speaker 13: reunion is next week or this weekend actually, so won't
- 34:33Speaker 13: be able to go back, but a lot of great memories.
- 34:36Speaker 1: That year you won the Bolitnikov Award. It's the top
- 34:38Speaker 1: wide receiver in college football. One of the other finalists
- 34:42Speaker 1: was Bengals number one draft pick Peter Warick. Do you
- 34:44Speaker 1: think winning that award gives you instant credibility with the
- 34:48Speaker 1: guys that you coach.
- 34:50Speaker 7: I think it does.
- 34:51Speaker 13: You know, they understand the award coming from college and
- 34:54Speaker 13: what it means, and being recognized as a top receiver
- 34:58Speaker 13: is a tremendous honor. And just going back, Peter Ward
- 35:01Speaker 13: was my kind of my not my idol, but I
- 35:03Speaker 13: looked up to him. I kind of patterned my wanted
- 35:05Speaker 13: to pattern my game after his game. I watched in
- 35:08Speaker 13: the summertime watch all his tapes route running because he
- 35:11Speaker 13: was one of the best route runners in the game,
- 35:13Speaker 13: and so, uh, you know, to be mentioned in the
- 35:17Speaker 13: same category as him as it was an honor and uh,
- 35:20Speaker 13: but uh, you know, to win that award, it gives
- 35:24Speaker 13: you credibility because the guys know.
- 35:27Speaker 7: What it means. And uh.
- 35:29Speaker 13: And then to play in the NFL also gives me credibility.
- 35:32Speaker 13: And and I try to coach from a player's perspective,
- 35:34Speaker 13: and so I'm trying to put my my my feet
- 35:38Speaker 13: in the in their in their situation and and just
- 35:41Speaker 13: uh and just make sure I understand what they're going
- 35:44Speaker 13: through as I coach them.
- 35:45Speaker 4: Up.
- 35:46Speaker 1: We're visiting with wide receivers coach Troy Walters. The Vikings
- 35:48Speaker 1: selected you in the fifth round of the two thousand draft.
- 35:51Speaker 1: What are your most vivid memories of that draft experience.
- 35:54Speaker 7: It was a long weekend back then.
- 35:56Speaker 13: I think it was three days, so it started or
- 35:59Speaker 13: maybe two days Saturday and then all day Sundays, you know,
- 36:02Speaker 13: seven rounds and I got drafted in the fifth round.
- 36:04Speaker 13: So I watched from the beginning and just made a
- 36:07Speaker 13: note of all the receivers that were drafted, and you know,
- 36:09Speaker 13: thought I was better than most of them that were taken.
- 36:12Speaker 13: But had to be patient waiting my turn and was
- 36:15Speaker 13: blessed to get drafted by the Vikings and uh, which
- 36:17Speaker 13: my dad was on that staff, so he was able
- 36:19Speaker 13: to see me play, you know, every weekend, and whereas
- 36:23Speaker 13: in college he wasn't able to see me much. So
- 36:25Speaker 13: it was a blessing to go to Minnesota. I was
- 36:27Speaker 13: playing with Chris Carter, Randy Moss, so some great receivers
- 36:31Speaker 13: I learned from and it was a good experience.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Those were not the only Hall of Fame caliber players
- 36:37Speaker 1: that you played with in your eight year NFL career.
- 36:40Speaker 1: I want to name a few and just get your
- 36:42Speaker 1: thoughts what you admire and respect about these guys. So
- 36:44Speaker 1: let's start with a couple that you mentioned. Randy Moss.
- 36:47Speaker 7: Uh, the freak.
- 36:50Speaker 13: Side speed, athleticism, things he did on the football field just.
- 36:55Speaker 7: Just wiled me.
- 36:56Speaker 13: And uh, you know, I mean some great performances and
- 37:00Speaker 13: so just the thing that comes to mind is just
- 37:02Speaker 13: a freakish athlete and and really changed the way you know,
- 37:06Speaker 13: receivers reviewed and and uh how the game was played.
- 37:10Speaker 13: Chris Carter, Uh, probably the best hands I've been around,
- 37:15Speaker 13: caught everything technician, Uh worked in the slot. So I
- 37:19Speaker 13: learned a lot about slot running routes in the slot from.
- 37:22Speaker 7: Him, and and uh.
- 37:23Speaker 13: You know the things that he did on the field,
- 37:26Speaker 13: the catches he made were tremendous. Peyton Manning, Uh the
- 37:31Speaker 13: general detailed made everyone around him better. I was blessed
- 37:36Speaker 13: to go to Minnesota, went from Minnesota, or went to
- 37:39Speaker 13: went from Minnesota, which was kind of just run down
- 37:42Speaker 13: the field, we're gonna throw it up to to you know,
- 37:44Speaker 13: to to to our playmakers. To going to Indianapolis with
- 37:48Speaker 13: more of a detailed precise you know, Peyton, if it
- 37:53Speaker 13: was a twelve yard he wanted to be twelve yards.
- 37:55Speaker 13: He wanted to be at the numbers. And that's how
- 37:57Speaker 13: I was able to play, you know, four years there
- 37:59Speaker 13: because of the precision and the details and the techniques.
- 38:02Speaker 7: And but he he.
- 38:04Speaker 13: Knew everyone's position, He knew what the defense was gonna
- 38:07Speaker 13: do before they even did it, and uh, you know, prepared, studied.
- 38:11Speaker 13: Uh truly one of the great quarterbacks of the game.
- 38:15Speaker 13: Marvin Harrison quiet but a silent assassin when he didn't
- 38:20Speaker 13: say a whole lot, but when he got on the field, uh,
- 38:23Speaker 13: you know, he made DB's look bad. And and uh
- 38:26Speaker 13: with his route running great hands, great hips. Him and
- 38:30Speaker 13: Peyton were always on the same page. They had that chemistry,
- 38:33Speaker 13: that connection that was just outstanding. Edrin James Edge was solid,
- 38:40Speaker 13: you know, very productive before his knee injury, you know,
- 38:44Speaker 13: he had he was one of the top backs in
- 38:46Speaker 13: the league. And and you know Hall of Famer, you know,
- 38:50Speaker 13: catch the ball out of the backfield. We actually went
- 38:53Speaker 13: to Arizona together after our days in Indie, and that
- 38:56Speaker 13: year the coach won the Super Bowl, so we left
- 38:58Speaker 13: the left a year two soon, but really admired what
- 39:01Speaker 13: he did as a as a running back.
- 39:03Speaker 7: Larry Fitzgerald, I knew Larry.
- 39:06Speaker 13: Funny story, Larry was a ball boy when I played
- 39:08Speaker 13: for the Vikings, so I always kid him even to
- 39:11Speaker 13: this day that he used to pick up my jockstrap
- 39:13Speaker 13: and my towel and and put my unit equipment out
- 39:16Speaker 13: in the locker room.
- 39:17Speaker 7: But you know, he's he's mister consistent in.
- 39:22Speaker 13: Terms of just great hands, route runner size, did everything
- 39:26Speaker 13: the right way off the field on the field, you know.
- 39:30Speaker 13: And I was able to kind of my last year
- 39:33Speaker 13: and in two thousand and six in Arizona's able to
- 39:34Speaker 13: kind of mentor him and and uh, you know, he's
- 39:37Speaker 13: We have a great relationship and he's a great, great
- 39:39Speaker 13: human being. Two more Kurt warner Man, Kurt awesome guy,
- 39:46Speaker 13: awesome quarterback. He was a leader, uh when I was
- 39:50Speaker 13: with the Cardinals, leader of the team. You know, just
- 39:54Speaker 13: his story where he came from, it's just a tremendous
- 39:58Speaker 13: inspirra inspira rational story. And you know he probably had
- 40:03Speaker 13: of all the guys, he probably had the best touch.
- 40:07Speaker 13: You know, he knew when to throw it. You're running
- 40:10Speaker 13: a fifteen yard dagger. He threw it before you came
- 40:12Speaker 13: out of your break, a soft ball, easy to catch.
- 40:16Speaker 7: Learned a lot from him.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Megatron Calvin Johnson.
- 40:20Speaker 7: Yeah, that was my last year, two thousand and seven.
- 40:22Speaker 7: That was his rookie year.
- 40:23Speaker 13: And when he came in, you know, he was a
- 40:24Speaker 13: top I think five draft choice, maybe two or three,
- 40:28Speaker 13: and he came in and with a free agent mentality
- 40:30Speaker 13: and just worked his butt off.
- 40:33Speaker 7: Humble, but just wanted to be great.
- 40:36Speaker 13: And I would put him right with the Randy Moss
- 40:40Speaker 13: in terms of freak, in terms of size, speed, strength,
- 40:44Speaker 13: ways he catched the ball for a bigger guy running routes.
- 40:48Speaker 13: I mean, he was just he was amazing and had
- 40:51Speaker 13: a tremendous career.
- 40:53Speaker 1: After you got into coaching, one of your first stops
- 40:55Speaker 1: was Texas A and M, where there was a fresh
- 40:57Speaker 1: out of college grad assistant on the staff named Zach Taylor.
- 41:01Speaker 1: He reportedly said to him, when you become a head coach,
- 41:04Speaker 1: don't forget about me. True story or urban myth, true.
- 41:08Speaker 7: Story, true story.
- 41:09Speaker 13: I saw it in him even back in the day,
- 41:12Speaker 13: very detailed. He was in charge of the tight ends,
- 41:15Speaker 13: and then he was a He was a GA, but
- 41:16Speaker 13: in charge in charge of the tight ends, and he
- 41:18Speaker 13: did all our signaling, so he was our signaler. So, uh,
- 41:22Speaker 13: funny story. Our last game, we were playing Texas. If
- 41:26Speaker 13: we win the game, we were cod Big twelve champs,
- 41:30Speaker 13: and at the time, Sarah, his wife, was pregnant, and
- 41:33Speaker 13: we weren't sure when she was going to go into labor,
- 41:35Speaker 13: but whenever she did, he was gonna leave and and
- 41:37Speaker 13: possibly missed the game. So we were just praying hoping
- 41:40Speaker 13: it wasn't during the game because if he'd left, we
- 41:43Speaker 13: wouldn't have We would not have would have had a
- 41:44Speaker 13: signaler or anybody to signal. So uh uh, tremendous young coach.
- 41:49Speaker 13: Then I saw it in him, and I did tell him.
- 41:52Speaker 13: I told him, you know, when you become a head coach,
- 41:54Speaker 13: you know, And he thought I was just joking, but
- 41:56Speaker 13: I saw the talent and the trajectory he was gonna go.
- 42:01Speaker 7: Back back then twenty ten eleven.
- 42:04Speaker 1: All right, a few wild card topics now for Bengals
- 42:06Speaker 1: wide receivers coach Troy Walters. Who is your all time
- 42:09Speaker 1: favorite athlete in any sport?
- 42:12Speaker 7: And why Barry Sanders?
- 42:14Speaker 13: You know growing up watching him, small guy, small football player,
- 42:20Speaker 13: but dynamic, make guys look silly. But think I think
- 42:24Speaker 13: I respect him the most of these. Humble when he
- 42:26Speaker 13: scored a touchdown, he just give the ball to the
- 42:28Speaker 13: fisho very quiet, humble, and he's probably my favorite athlete.
- 42:34Speaker 1: As I mentioned, you won the Bulittannikov Award in nineteen
- 42:36Speaker 1: ninety nine. The actual trophy is huge. It's fifty six pounds.
- 42:41Speaker 1: It is the largest trophy in college sports. I assume
- 42:44Speaker 1: you don't get to keep that. What does the winner get?
- 42:47Speaker 10: No?
- 42:47Speaker 7: They give you a Yeah, I have the trophy.
- 42:50Speaker 13: I have it at home, and when I was at
- 42:51Speaker 13: A and M, it was it was in my office.
- 42:54Speaker 13: I've put in my office a couple of different stops.
- 42:56Speaker 13: Now it's downstairs in the basement, but it is heavy.
- 42:59Speaker 13: It's hard to transport from one location. So wherever I
- 43:03Speaker 13: wherever I have it, it usually stays right there. But
- 43:05Speaker 13: it is definitely a heavy, heavy trophy.
- 43:08Speaker 3: All right.
- 43:09Speaker 1: If your current players want to see video of you
- 43:11Speaker 1: from your playing days, what do you show them.
- 43:14Speaker 13: I've got a tape a cutup of one on ones
- 43:18Speaker 13: form my time in Indianapolis. Clyde Christensen, my receiver coach
- 43:22Speaker 13: at the time. A couple of years ago, I asked
- 43:24Speaker 13: him for if he could send me all the one
- 43:27Speaker 13: on one cut ups, and so I made a little
- 43:29Speaker 13: highlight tape of me running one on ones during training
- 43:34Speaker 13: camp OTAs, and so every now and then I'll put
- 43:37Speaker 13: it on and show them that I used to be decent.
- 43:41Speaker 1: Other than playing in coaching football. What do you do well?
- 43:45Speaker 13: I hope my wife says. I'm a good father and husband.
- 43:48Speaker 13: I love to spending time with the family. We travel
- 43:50Speaker 13: around a lot when we have time in the off season.
- 43:55Speaker 13: I have four kids, so just hanging out with them,
- 43:57Speaker 13: and they're young, ten, eleven, ten, and almost three, so
- 44:02Speaker 13: they keep me busy.
- 44:03Speaker 7: And got an awesome wife.
- 44:04Speaker 13: And love to spend time with her and just be
- 44:07Speaker 13: a family man.
- 44:09Speaker 1: All right. Final question, and this one's kind of deep.
- 44:12Speaker 1: If you could meet anybody in history, living or deceased,
- 44:16Speaker 1: who would that person be?
- 44:18Speaker 13: I was, like I said, I'm a man of faith.
- 44:19Speaker 13: So if I had to meet someone to be Jesus Christ,
- 44:23Speaker 13: you know, I'm into the word, just all everything that
- 44:26Speaker 13: he did and just the stories in the Bible, it'd
- 44:30Speaker 13: be fascinating to meet him in person.
- 44:32Speaker 1: This has been great. I appreciate your time, keep up
- 44:35Speaker 1: the good work and thanks so much.
- 44:36Speaker 7: Thanks for having me.
