- 0:07Speaker 1: Hey, let's talk Phillies and we're going to get into
- 0:09Speaker 1: how things have turned around significantly for them. But we
- 0:12Speaker 1: welcome in Charlotte Barnes joining us for the first time
- 0:15Speaker 1: on FT and you can follow all of her coverage
- 0:17Speaker 1: in The Athletic on the Phillies.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Charlotte, it's great to have you on.
- 0:20Speaker 1: I've been reading all of your articles on the Alec
- 0:23Speaker 1: Boeme situation too, so I've really been interested in the
- 0:26Speaker 1: coverage that you're bringing there. Thanks for joining us, and
- 0:29Speaker 1: can you lay out for our audience some of what's
- 0:31Speaker 1: going on there that could be leading to some distractions
- 0:34Speaker 1: for him and causing some performance issues too.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for having me. It has been a complicated,
- 0:42Speaker 3: I would say month plus saga legally for Alec Boem.
- 0:47Speaker 3: So March twenty fifth, just a head opening day, he
- 0:50Speaker 3: files a lawsuit in Philadelphia against his parents, alleging financial mismanagement.
- 0:55Speaker 3: It all comes back to these LLC's. They created a
- 0:58Speaker 3: couple LC's when you first got drafted, another couple a
- 1:02Speaker 3: few years ago, and essentially what he is alleging is
- 1:05Speaker 3: that the money that was moved into those LLCs. Yes,
- 1:08Speaker 3: some of his parents invested on his behalf and used
- 1:10Speaker 3: to pay his bills. A large sum he's alleging was
- 1:14Speaker 3: taken and has been used by his parents for what
- 1:17Speaker 3: he doesn't know, So it all comes back to that.
- 1:21Speaker 3: He's filed a few different documents. He filed for an
- 1:24Speaker 3: injunction essentially requesting that his parents return five hundred and
- 1:28Speaker 3: twenty eight thousand dollars that they took. He alleges it
- 1:31Speaker 3: is for legal war chest. They took this money a
- 1:34Speaker 3: couple months ago, or about a month and a half ago,
- 1:36Speaker 3: and he's alleging they're going to use it to fund
- 1:38Speaker 3: their legal expenses. They're alleging they're going to use it
- 1:41Speaker 3: to pay the bills from the money that he took
- 1:43Speaker 3: out of these LLCs. The latest and that they filed
- 1:46Speaker 3: a few days ago, he shows that he has five
- 1:49Speaker 3: million dollars in one of these accounts attached to the LLCs,
- 1:51Speaker 3: so he would have no trouble paying his bills. So
- 1:54Speaker 3: right now it's a lot of back and forth. On
- 1:56Speaker 3: June twenty second, I believe they are going to meet
- 1:59Speaker 3: with Philadelphia Courts in a zoom room to then set
- 2:01Speaker 3: the date for a hearing, and then maybe we'll have
- 2:03Speaker 3: a decision on an injunction, So just a lot of
- 2:06Speaker 3: legal back and forth.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Charlotte, have we ever heard of anything like this before?
- 2:12Speaker 4: I mean, I'm sure this has happened before, but have
- 2:14Speaker 4: we heard of another player having an issue like this,
- 2:17Speaker 4: especially so publicly with their parents. I know it's happened,
- 2:21Speaker 4: but this is like the most public one I've ever
- 2:23Speaker 4: heard of.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean I'm pretty young, so I can't exactly
- 2:28Speaker 3: remember what happened with Ryan Howard and his parents, but
- 2:30Speaker 3: that a lot of people brought up that example, or
- 2:33Speaker 3: Jack Johnson in the NHL, which I wasn't familiar with.
- 2:37Speaker 3: He's also had legal troubles with his parents. But yeah,
- 2:40Speaker 3: in recent years, really in the past decade, this is
- 2:42Speaker 3: the only thing I can think about.
- 2:45Speaker 5: And you kind of laid out the timeline. Do you
- 2:48Speaker 5: have dates as far as the timeline, because if we're
- 2:50Speaker 5: going to eventually correlate this to how Alec is playing
- 2:53Speaker 5: on the field, Philly fans need to be like, we
- 2:56Speaker 5: need to settled right now, like it's if this is
- 2:59Speaker 5: bothering him. So is there like normal dates of when
- 3:03Speaker 5: this could be, like each step could happen.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Yeah, So I think it's tricky in that they're not
- 3:11Speaker 3: meeting until June twenty seconds, so that's a month and
- 3:13Speaker 3: a half from now, and that's only to decide a
- 3:15Speaker 3: date for the hearing, and the hearing presumably they'll get
- 3:18Speaker 3: a decision on the injunction and whether Alec will get
- 3:21Speaker 3: his money back. And also part of it is that
- 3:23Speaker 3: his parents are seeking to move this Florida. They believe
- 3:26Speaker 3: because it's LLC's that were created in Florida, it should
- 3:29Speaker 3: go through arbitration there instead of going through trial in Pennsylvania,
- 3:33Speaker 3: which they are arguing is just not the right venue
- 3:35Speaker 3: for it because a lot of this happened in Florida.
- 3:37Speaker 3: All the bones are legal residents there, So if it
- 3:39Speaker 3: gets moved into arbitration, eventually this could all take place
- 3:43Speaker 3: out of the public eye, which I think all of
- 3:46Speaker 3: the parties involved in the mean. I mean, I think
- 3:48Speaker 3: Alec wants it to take place in Pennsylvania, but I
- 3:50Speaker 3: think they would all love this to be playing out
- 3:53Speaker 3: a lot more privately. But yeah, in terms of the timeline,
- 3:55Speaker 3: it's tricky. This could be playing out for months. I
- 3:58Speaker 3: will say, like people close to the situation have said
- 4:01Speaker 3: they feel like he processed a lot of this because
- 4:04Speaker 3: a lot of this was taking place during spring training
- 4:06Speaker 3: in terms of him reaching out to his parents wanting
- 4:08Speaker 3: to know more about his accounts, and a lot was
- 4:11Speaker 3: unfolding then rather than during the season. I mean, obviously
- 4:14Speaker 3: the news coverage and all of these updates were taking
- 4:16Speaker 3: place during the season, but people closed him kind of
- 4:18Speaker 3: felt like he has processed it and kind of put
- 4:21Speaker 3: it away at the moment.
- 4:23Speaker 6: Does he talk about it, Charlotte? Does he does? Boom?
- 4:26Speaker 4: If you go up to Alec and say, Alec, I
- 4:28Speaker 4: want to ask you a question about this, does he
- 4:30Speaker 4: talk about it or is it all just no comment,
- 4:33Speaker 4: no comments, legal situation.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Yeah, it's no comment. He was asked about it as
- 4:38Speaker 3: soon as it came out, and I mean the story
- 4:39Speaker 3: the Inquirer road dropped middle of the game on opening day,
- 4:42Speaker 3: so that was not great timing. So he hits a
- 4:45Speaker 3: home run all opening day and is asked about it
- 4:46Speaker 3: after because of course, and he says no comment and yes,
- 4:49Speaker 3: as far as I know, for the foreseeable future, he
- 4:51Speaker 3: does not want to talk about it.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Do you imagine can anyone imagine, though, I just I mean,
- 4:58Speaker 4: can you imagine Scott and Eric to play a baseball
- 5:00Speaker 4: season and also at the same time having a lawsuit
- 5:03Speaker 4: against your mom and dad or someone who you've probably
- 5:05Speaker 4: leaned on your entire life. I can't even imagine what
- 5:08Speaker 4: he's going through his numbers. Aside the baseball I'm just
- 5:11Speaker 4: talking about as a person in general, Cheryl. You you
- 5:13Speaker 4: don't play baseball. Can you imagine waking up one day
- 5:15Speaker 4: and saying, mom, Dad, by the way, I'm suing you
- 5:17Speaker 4: for stealing money allegedly from me. I can't even imagine
- 5:21Speaker 4: having that weighing over me. Forget trying to play baseball
- 5:24Speaker 4: with it weighing over me.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean in his parents filing a couple of
- 5:29Speaker 3: weeks ago, there were one hundred and four pages of
- 5:31Speaker 3: text messages between him and his parents. And even reading that,
- 5:34Speaker 3: I mean, imagine your parents putting out one hundred and
- 5:37Speaker 3: four pages of text messages between you and them. Like
- 5:41Speaker 3: it's just all of this is so hard to fathom.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Are his teammates, I know his teammates, and all you
- 5:48Speaker 5: hear about is the Phillies Clubhouse, Like this is the
- 5:50Speaker 5: time when I think the Phillies Clubhouse really needs to
- 5:53Speaker 5: back him. Are his teammates speaking about it at all?
- 5:56Speaker 5: Or is it just the same tight lips no comment.
- 6:01Speaker 3: They haven't really spoken about it at all. I think,
- 6:04Speaker 3: just in terms of Alec, they've just sort of talked
- 6:05Speaker 3: about the difficulties he's been having on the field because
- 6:08Speaker 3: I think they've been asked about it. I know, a
- 6:10Speaker 3: few weeks ago, Alec had a pretty tough night and
- 6:12Speaker 3: he ends up sitting next to Schwarbur and Schwarber ends
- 6:14Speaker 3: up comforting him. And I think his teammates have tried
- 6:18Speaker 3: to be with him in that way. I mean, I
- 6:20Speaker 3: saw Dave Dombrowski kind of hug him a couple of
- 6:23Speaker 3: weeks ago. I think everyone's trying to support him. And
- 6:26Speaker 3: I mean when Rob was the manager, he said, look
- 6:28Speaker 3: like I've be't talked about this with Alec, but my
- 6:30Speaker 3: door is always open. And I think for the most part,
- 6:33Speaker 3: like Alec, Boehm is well known for airing his frustrations
- 6:37Speaker 3: out publicly in the past, and everyone's seen that. But
- 6:41Speaker 3: I mean, the hitting coach told me, the manager said,
- 6:43Speaker 3: like they said, they're not seeing that level of frustration
- 6:45Speaker 3: right now from him. It seems like he's pretty even
- 6:48Speaker 3: keeled and he's not really talking about it. So when
- 6:51Speaker 3: the coaches and players are short talking about this, they're
- 6:53Speaker 3: talking about in the light if he's struggling on the
- 6:55Speaker 3: field more so than what's happening off the field.
- 6:58Speaker 5: What about what about with coming in as Don Mattingly
- 7:01Speaker 5: coming in as a new manager. Does there seem like
- 7:05Speaker 5: there's a different air about not necessarily just this situation,
- 7:09Speaker 5: but the fact that now we're just looking at on
- 7:11Speaker 5: the field. And Don came out the other day and
- 7:13Speaker 5: he said what he said about I think Alec is
- 7:16Speaker 5: gonna be there. But do you think if he's still
- 7:20Speaker 5: struggling in X amount of time they do look to
- 7:23Speaker 5: make a move with an ed Mundo Sosa or possibly
- 7:27Speaker 5: at Mundo at second and Stod at third, or is
- 7:30Speaker 5: there do they even have an option if they go
- 7:33Speaker 5: to that direction.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think Sosa playing third and stop
- 7:39Speaker 3: playing second would probably be the right move should they
- 7:42Speaker 3: go that way. I mean, right now, down's like, like
- 7:45Speaker 3: you said, pretty publicly committing to playing Bam and letting
- 7:47Speaker 3: him play through this. But I mean, at this time
- 7:50Speaker 3: he's just really not helping the team. I mean, last
- 7:52Speaker 3: night you look at like that was the first time
- 7:54Speaker 3: he was pinched hit four. Unless we're talking a blowout,
- 7:57Speaker 3: we're talking an injury. That was the first time he
- 7:59Speaker 3: was like ever or pinch hit four in his career
- 8:01Speaker 3: in that circumstance, And I think that kind of shows
- 8:04Speaker 3: where things are right now. They can't really trust him
- 8:06Speaker 3: in those late game situations, and I would not be
- 8:10Speaker 3: surprised if things keep trending this way, if they turn
- 8:13Speaker 3: to Sosa at third. I mean, it just feels like,
- 8:16Speaker 3: especially with everything he's been going through, just giving him
- 8:19Speaker 3: a few days on the bench honestly might just let
- 8:21Speaker 3: him clear his head and maybe he's a different guy
- 8:23Speaker 3: when he comes back from that.
- 8:27Speaker 6: Let's talk love life ft family.
- 8:29Speaker 4: I know it's an important part of everyone's life, but

- 9:19Speaker 1: details and important safety information, and we thank bluech You
- 9:23Speaker 1: for sponsoring the podcast. And we can expand this now
- 9:29Speaker 1: into the larger conversation on what you're seeing differently from
- 9:33Speaker 1: the Phillies. Now the classic question versus when Rob Thompson
- 9:37Speaker 1: was managing this team, all of a sudden, it's coming together,
- 9:40Speaker 1: Bryson Stott can hit, Bryce Harper, elevating his game, Christopher Sanchez,
- 9:44Speaker 1: I mean continuing to impress, but was dominant. So what
- 9:47Speaker 1: are you seeing from this team that looks different as
- 9:50Speaker 1: a whole. Is it just a matter of a few
- 9:52Speaker 1: more bats getting hot.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's part of it. And I think
- 9:56Speaker 3: a huge thing is the starting pitching. I mean there
- 9:59Speaker 3: was just like some explicit, inexplicable bad luck. I mean
- 10:02Speaker 3: that everyone talks about the but BIP in the first
- 10:06Speaker 3: week or a few weeks of the season, and I
- 10:08Speaker 3: mean you look at Jesus Luzardo had a great start
- 10:10Speaker 3: in Miami on Sunday, Christopher Sanchez was excellent the other night.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I mean, they were one of the last teams in
- 10:15Speaker 3: baseball to have a starter go seven innings, and finally
- 10:18Speaker 3: Lozardo did it last week, and I think that's been huge,
- 10:21Speaker 3: having him go that deep, having Christopher Sanchez go that deep,
- 10:24Speaker 3: and having them pull it together, because the rotation is
- 10:27Speaker 3: really just the It's the strongest part of this team,
- 10:30Speaker 3: no doubt. And I think when you had them struggling
- 10:32Speaker 3: at the beginning of the season, along with a lot
- 10:34Speaker 3: of the bats, it just it really was an issue.
- 10:37Speaker 3: And then yeah, you're right, you're right about the bats
- 10:39Speaker 3: getting hot, and I think they've They're also just they're
- 10:42Speaker 3: playing a lot better in these late game situations where
- 10:44Speaker 3: last year, remember toward the end of the season, it
- 10:47Speaker 3: felt like anything could happen. I mean those last couple
- 10:49Speaker 3: of months, it just felt like, yeah, the Phillies could
- 10:51Speaker 3: be down like two or three runs in the last
- 10:54Speaker 3: few winnings and I would not count them out in
- 10:56Speaker 3: any circumstance. Meanwhile, I was on that road trip and Chicago.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Aside from their last game in Chicago where they kind
- 11:03Speaker 3: of fought and they sent it to extras like they
- 11:05Speaker 3: just looked dead in the water, and I just there,
- 11:09Speaker 3: they've looked a lot more clutch, essentially. I I really
- 11:11Speaker 3: trust their ability to come back in these circumstances. Were
- 11:14Speaker 3: even just two weeks ago, you could tell they were
- 11:16Speaker 3: playing really tight and we're really stressed out, and they're
- 11:19Speaker 3: they're looking a lot better in those situations.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Now, all right, Charlie, before I let you go, I
- 11:24Speaker 4: just before I we can move on, what did you
- 11:26Speaker 4: call it? Because that's the way I'm gonna start saying
- 11:28Speaker 4: it for now. When it was what did you call it?
- 11:29Speaker 4: The BIP, I'm gonna start calling it but bim, Yes,
- 11:33Speaker 4: I love it. That was awesome.
- 11:35Speaker 6: I did too, But I love it. I love it, not.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Even kidding, Charlotte, we're going to change that because I actually.
- 11:42Speaker 6: Thought, wow, it was a little bit better.
- 11:43Speaker 4: I thought it was awesome, but BIP because I had
- 11:45Speaker 4: bibb and Bop for bibb and Bob for lunch today.
- 11:48Speaker 6: So that's all that popped in my mind when she
- 11:49Speaker 6: said it. So, but BIP, I love it close enough,
- 11:55Speaker 6: So awesome.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Nobody termed it like it's not a real that's the
- 11:59Speaker 1: whole thing is like abip, right, so.
- 12:02Speaker 3: And I don't want to spell it out and saying
- 12:04Speaker 3: it is just like you be too.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Long, I know, but it's not like when someone first said,
- 12:08Speaker 1: like we shall call it babit, Like, no, you don't
- 12:11Speaker 1: get to make that decision.
- 12:12Speaker 2: So now now it's I mean.
- 12:15Speaker 5: Somebody that has a great babip and is having a
- 12:18Speaker 5: great start to the season, Brandon Marsh. Brandon Marsh actually
- 12:23Speaker 5: has I think he has like twenty some at bats
- 12:25Speaker 5: against lefties. Don Mattingly not afraid because he has the
- 12:30Speaker 5: intern tag to say, you know what, Marsh, you're hot.
- 12:34Speaker 5: You're gonna play against lefties and righties. Because I've seen
- 12:37Speaker 5: the last few nights he's gotten at bats against lefties.
- 12:40Speaker 5: They're not afraid to put him out there. Is that
- 12:43Speaker 5: part of just him being hot or is that part
- 12:45Speaker 5: of the Don Mattingly saying I see that he's hot,
- 12:48Speaker 5: and I don't really care. We're gonna put whoever's out
- 12:50Speaker 5: there that's gonna be hot.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's exactly it. I mean, he has
- 12:55Speaker 3: just been phenomenal to start the season. I mean three
- 12:58Speaker 3: for four last night with a triple. It's just been
- 13:02Speaker 3: really hot so far. And I think part of that
- 13:04Speaker 3: too is just the outfield has been sort of confounding,
- 13:08Speaker 3: and when you when you have someone in the outfield
- 13:10Speaker 3: who you can trust to play every day. I think
- 13:12Speaker 3: that's why they're moving forward Brandon that way, and I
- 13:15Speaker 3: think like there they trust him a little bit more
- 13:17Speaker 3: becau obviously he's been around. I think they're protecting Justin
- 13:19Speaker 3: Crawford a little bit right now because they don't want
- 13:21Speaker 3: him playing every day against lefties at this time, just
- 13:25Speaker 3: because he's really early in his career. They just want
- 13:27Speaker 3: to protect.
- 13:28Speaker 6: Him in that way.
- 13:29Speaker 3: And I think having sort of an everyday option in
- 13:32Speaker 3: the outfield has been beyond Aduli Scarcia has been huge,
- 13:35Speaker 3: because I mean, it's it's just been it's it's been
- 13:37Speaker 3: a really weird start for the Phillies outfield. When you
- 13:39Speaker 3: have Felix ray Is in his second career game hitting cleanup,
- 13:42Speaker 3: like that's sort of indicative on where things are.
- 13:49Speaker 6: All right.
- 13:49Speaker 5: So my last one was something that was brought up
- 13:52Speaker 5: by Kevin Long when they're in their struggles. One of
- 13:55Speaker 5: the reasons that Kevin Long said that they weren't able
- 13:59Speaker 5: to hit lefties early in the season, was because they
- 14:01Speaker 5: didn't have a left handed pitcher to throw to him
- 14:04Speaker 5: to throw to their hitters. Has there been any follow
- 14:08Speaker 5: up with that or is it something that's kind of
- 14:10Speaker 5: been forgotten the fact that, ah, well, now they brought
- 14:13Speaker 5: somebody in And did the players ever react to his
- 14:17Speaker 5: comment about that when they were struggling.
- 14:21Speaker 3: Yeah, so that that was said to me, and Rob
- 14:24Speaker 3: was asked about it the next day and he immediately
- 14:27Speaker 3: shut that down as like not being the reason why
- 14:29Speaker 3: they were struggling. I mean, it's it's an interesting excuse,
- 14:33Speaker 3: I'll say that, but as far as I know, the
- 14:35Speaker 3: players didn't really react to it, and I mean it
- 14:38Speaker 3: is just like it. Yeah, it is a really interesting excuse.
- 14:42Speaker 3: But it's just interesting as well, because I mean, when
- 14:46Speaker 3: you're at home, obviously traject exists. Obviously they don't have
- 14:49Speaker 3: traject on the road. Some of these guys don't even
- 14:52Speaker 3: want like a lefty bpe BP header throwing to them
- 14:56Speaker 3: or pitcher throwing to them. So I yeah, there wasn't
- 14:59Speaker 3: really any reaction beyond that. Personally, I don't know how
- 15:04Speaker 3: much of that I would I would say, is why
- 15:07Speaker 3: they weren't really hitting lefties. But yeah, it was an
- 15:09Speaker 3: interesting comment. There really hasn't been much follow up. They're
- 15:12Speaker 3: they're hitting theft lefties a little bit better now, and
- 15:15Speaker 3: I I'll be curious to see if I should follow
- 15:19Speaker 3: up on that and see what people say.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Hey, my last one is about don Mattingly and if
- 15:26Speaker 1: it seems like he's enjoying this. And I haven't been
- 15:29Speaker 1: to a Phillies game as a media member in the
- 15:31Speaker 1: past week and a half while this team's gone what
- 15:33Speaker 1: eight and one with Donnie, so the winning helps, But
- 15:36Speaker 1: do you think that he's enjoying this. I don't know
- 15:39Speaker 1: if he had the thoughts of being in this spot,
- 15:42Speaker 1: and if he did, I don't know if he thought
- 15:44Speaker 1: he was going to be in this spot in you
- 15:46Speaker 1: know what, late April taking over a team to essentially
- 15:49Speaker 1: be their manager for the entire year. So what are
- 15:51Speaker 1: you seeing and hearing from him?
- 15:54Speaker 3: Yeah? I mean he was asked about that right away
- 15:56Speaker 3: because he essentially said I don't want to ever manage
- 15:59Speaker 3: again when they hired him, and here we are, And
- 16:02Speaker 3: I think part of the reason it sounds like he
- 16:04Speaker 3: said that was because he didn't want anyone to think
- 16:06Speaker 3: he was there to like take over for Rob. That's
- 16:08Speaker 3: not why they hired him. They hired him to be
- 16:10Speaker 3: a veteran voice. And I think the players have really
- 16:13Speaker 3: appreciated that. Everyone sort of loved having a former player
- 16:16Speaker 3: and a former player of his stature on staff. But
- 16:20Speaker 3: I get the sense that he's really enjoying it. He
- 16:22Speaker 3: is super active. I mean in terms of like our
- 16:25Speaker 3: media availabilities, like it's it was common with Rob. Rob
- 16:28Speaker 3: will come talk to us like right after the clubhouse closed,
- 16:31Speaker 3: whereas with Dawn. He wants to see all the work
- 16:33Speaker 3: in the infield before he comes talked up talks to us,
- 16:36Speaker 3: and he loves working in the infield. He said something
- 16:38Speaker 3: funny the other day because like someone was asking him
- 16:40Speaker 3: about it, and he was like, yeah, I'm trying to
- 16:43Speaker 3: get all the sixty five year olds out there. I'm
- 16:45Speaker 3: trying to stay active. So go sixty five year olds.
- 16:47Speaker 3: We all should be staying active. Just because of all
- 16:49Speaker 3: the work he's doing in the.
- 16:50Speaker 4: Field, Charlotte, is there any good stories between him and
- 16:54Speaker 4: Preston yet, Like where he's working for his son, so
- 16:57Speaker 4: he is done his son had to I mean they're
- 16:59Speaker 4: obviously so I guess not. But what happens when something
- 17:03Speaker 4: goes wrong, is Preston gonna come down and yell at
- 17:05Speaker 4: down and be like, Dad, you're doing this wrong.
- 17:10Speaker 3: I don't think either of them would love that scenario,
- 17:12Speaker 3: but yeah, something like Don was obviously asked about it,
- 17:16Speaker 3: and he said, I don't think there are gonna be
- 17:17Speaker 3: any issues going forward because at the end of the day,
- 17:20Speaker 3: like he wants to win, Preston wants to win, Dave
- 17:22Speaker 3: wants to win, Everyone wants to win. And I mean, like,
- 17:25Speaker 3: if a circumstance like that arrived, I think it'd probably
- 17:28Speaker 3: be fair for Dave to be handling that because Dave
- 17:30Speaker 3: is over Preston any ways and is obviously not related
- 17:34Speaker 3: to Don. But yeah, Don did not seem concerned about
- 17:37Speaker 3: how things are going to be going forward, just because
- 17:40Speaker 3: they're working toward the same goal.
- 17:43Speaker 4: Charlotte, last thing before we let you go. When you
- 17:45Speaker 4: go into the dining room, are you happy or sad
- 17:48Speaker 4: that they move Frankie two scoops from his normal corner?
- 17:51Speaker 4: They gave him a whole station now, and then what
- 17:54Speaker 4: is your go to flavor when you go in there?
- 17:55Speaker 4: Because nobody can go in there because Frankie literally you
- 17:58Speaker 4: walk in there, he just hands you ice cream. You
- 18:00Speaker 4: can't even say no, it's just here's ice cream. Here's
- 18:02Speaker 4: my pick of the day. So what's your go to flavor?
- 18:07Speaker 3: Okay, last night I got the watermelon water ice which
- 18:09Speaker 3: they don't usually have, but I did like that, or
- 18:12Speaker 3: I'll do I like coconut. He's had that recently. But yeah,
- 18:16Speaker 3: it's been weird. I don't really know what they're doing
- 18:18Speaker 3: with the space where he used to work, but it's
- 18:20Speaker 3: like kind of funny because well, like last night, we
- 18:22Speaker 3: were eating dinner right in front of him, and he
- 18:23Speaker 3: likes to jump into our conversations, and last night I
- 18:27Speaker 3: saw the Yeah, of course, this was a great move
- 18:30Speaker 3: by A's PR head Mark Ling. He brought Frank an
- 18:34Speaker 3: A's hat last night because he apparently grew up a
- 18:36Speaker 3: Phi Philadelphia A's fan. And then Frank started to tell
- 18:40Speaker 3: me about the nineteen fifty four A's which is just crazy,
- 18:44Speaker 3: but obviously he's a Phillies fan now. But I thought
- 18:46Speaker 3: that was a nice move by A'SPR and I got
- 18:49Speaker 3: a photo of him with the hat and I think
- 18:50Speaker 3: you got it.
- 18:52Speaker 6: That's awesome.
- 18:53Speaker 4: He gave me three scoops. He gave me three scoops.
- 18:55Speaker 4: Last time, by the way, I was too much.
- 18:58Speaker 3: It's always too much.
- 19:00Speaker 5: It's perfect amount. There's no such thing as too much
- 19:03Speaker 5: ice cream.
- 19:04Speaker 6: There is not.
- 19:05Speaker 5: I took my boys up to the press box and
- 19:07Speaker 5: he would just absolutely. They're like, oh, He's like, oh,
- 19:10Speaker 5: make a milkshake. And all he did was fill the
- 19:12Speaker 5: milkshake cup full of ice cream, and he put a
- 19:15Speaker 5: straw in and he like mixed it around a little bit.
- 19:18Speaker 5: He goes, probably not a milkshake, but enjoy it was
- 19:21Speaker 5: all ice cream.
- 19:22Speaker 6: Frankie's the man so funny.
- 19:24Speaker 2: I think.
- 19:25Speaker 3: We've gotten really good cookies in the press box now,
- 19:28Speaker 3: Like the cookies they're serving are good. So if I
- 19:30Speaker 3: have one of those and then frank gives me a
- 19:32Speaker 3: lot of ice cream, I'm like, I just it's so sugary.
- 19:34Speaker 3: I can't be doing all that.
- 19:36Speaker 4: And he has all the toppings now too. He has
- 19:38Speaker 4: a little card. He has all the toppings. Before he
- 19:41Speaker 4: didn't have toppings. Now he's got all the toppings. You're like, Frank,
- 19:43Speaker 4: I cannot do this every day.
- 19:46Speaker 3: Probably he gives you so much ice cream it doesn't
- 19:48Speaker 3: fit in the cup. You can't put the toppings on.
- 19:50Speaker 6: True, that's true, you need towo cups. You need a
- 19:52Speaker 6: bigger cup.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Life's so tough. Too much ice cream from Frankie in
- 19:56Speaker 2: the press box. I mean, maybe he.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Should open up his own spot on the concourse, a
- 20:01Speaker 1: little concession stands frank two spot, because he's given away
- 20:05Speaker 1: too much.
- 20:06Speaker 2: You're right.
- 20:08Speaker 3: I'm always stunned by how obsessed the fans are with him,
- 20:10Speaker 3: like they they love him. Any photo we post of
- 20:13Speaker 3: frank the fans are so excited to see him because
- 20:15Speaker 3: I guess.
- 20:15Speaker 6: They never see him, so I agree.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Yeah, right, he's a legend.
- 20:19Speaker 1: You can't Usually there's you know, people like that at
- 20:21Speaker 1: the ballpark, but you can say hi to them or whatever.
- 20:24Speaker 1: This is someone who's essentially not accessible to the fans.
- 20:28Speaker 1: So kids, if you'd like to meet him someday, then
- 20:31Speaker 1: become a journalist and you can get in there and
- 20:33Speaker 1: get two, three or four scoops. Well, Charlotte, this was great.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Hope you enjoyed it. Thank you so much for joining us.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Appreciate it.
- 20:39Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for having me.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Guys.
- 20:43Speaker 1: You know, we don't always have to do things because
- 20:45Speaker 1: that's how it's always been.
- 20:47Speaker 4: Look, people consider me old school, and I thought I was,
- 20:50Speaker 4: but then we had the pitch clock and the abs
- 20:52Speaker 4: and ban on shifts and all these things that we've
- 20:54Speaker 4: had for a long time in baseball. And you know what,
- 20:56Speaker 4: much like mitt Mobile and the other mobile carriers, I'm

- 21:50Speaker 1: figure this was right up your ally. Aj Vegas Insider
- 21:54Speaker 1: did a pretty comprehensive report on fans online speak negatively
- 22:00Speaker 1: or positively about their teams and also speaking with foul
- 22:04Speaker 1: language or clean language. So according to analysis from them,
- 22:09Speaker 1: and they used Reddit of subredit channels that are kind
- 22:12Speaker 1: of super fan channels for teams. They looked at one
- 22:16Speaker 1: point two sixty four million comments. That's a nice sample size.
- 22:19Speaker 1: That's the way that they were able to put this together.
- 22:22Speaker 1: Thirty subreddits, so the thirty MLB teams, and they looked
- 22:26Speaker 1: for comments that had swear words, they looked for comments
- 22:29Speaker 1: that had positivity. They were able to put it through.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Of course, I'm sure some ai the whole deal. So
- 22:33Speaker 1: in total, out of those comments, they found fifty two
- 22:36Speaker 1: three hundred and thirteen swear words out of about one
- 22:39Speaker 1: point two sixty four million. And here are the top offenders.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Number one, the Athletics as fans checked in at six
- 22:52Speaker 1: percent six point zero three percent. Number two, most foul
- 22:56Speaker 1: mouthed not really teams, but fans their team, The Red
- 23:01Speaker 1: Sox Angels were three Yankees for Twins five. I mean,
- 23:07Speaker 1: I've got some surprises right from the jump here aj
- 23:11Speaker 1: Twins fans at five. I guess because of what they've
- 23:14Speaker 1: gotten through with the ownership rug and how they thought
- 23:19Speaker 1: they were going to get a new team and then
- 23:20Speaker 1: it didn't work out.
- 23:21Speaker 2: But your thoughts on the top five, hold on, I'm
- 23:26Speaker 2: not hearing you. Dude one sick.
- 23:35Speaker 6: You're back, Oh we got you. I didn't do anything.
- 23:40Speaker 6: Day's fans don't surprise me.
- 23:42Speaker 4: I mean, I played in Oakland for a long time
- 23:44Speaker 4: and they were also mad that their team left. So
- 23:46Speaker 4: I'm sure there was a lot of cursing certain people
- 23:48Speaker 4: out in that Red Sox. Not a surprise we all have.
- 23:52Speaker 4: They're not called the mass holes for nothing. Out there,
- 23:54Speaker 4: you know, they're also very passionate. Angels kind of surprised
- 23:57Speaker 4: me a little bit because you always think, oh, no
- 23:58Speaker 4: one really cares that much about the Angels are kind
- 24:00Speaker 4: of down there in Anaheim. But that wan't surprise me.
- 24:03Speaker 4: The Yankee is not a surprise. If you've ever been
- 24:04Speaker 4: to New York and try to drive or try to walk,
- 24:07Speaker 4: there's a lot of cursing. But Twins and Angels are
- 24:09Speaker 4: the two that really stand out, especially the Twins. What
- 24:11Speaker 4: happened to Minnesota?
- 24:12Speaker 5: Nice?
- 24:13Speaker 4: Everyone in Minnesota is always usually so nice, but apparently
- 24:16Speaker 4: the poll AADs and the Twins and the way they're
- 24:17Speaker 4: playing has.
- 24:18Speaker 6: Gotten people all riled up. So those two surprised me.
- 24:21Speaker 6: The other three do not.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you have to factor in what the
- 24:27Speaker 1: online conversation is a lot of the online conversation for
- 24:30Speaker 1: the A's is about the team moving.
- 24:33Speaker 2: So the oda's.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Fans that are in that group are going to flood
- 24:36Speaker 1: it and they're going to be ticked. Same with the
- 24:39Speaker 1: Twins fans, Same with the Angels fans, and then Yankees
- 24:41Speaker 1: red Sox. Kind of makes sense just based on Northeast
- 24:45Speaker 1: people cursing here. Can I throw you a shacker on
- 24:49Speaker 1: the other end of the spectrum, This was probably the
- 24:52Speaker 1: shocker of the entire study, the fourth most polite team.
- 24:58Speaker 1: If we're able to go to the most polite list
- 25:03Speaker 1: there it is. So I'll give you one through five
- 25:05Speaker 1: because I want to lay it out for the crowd
- 25:07Speaker 1: listening on podcasts later on Cardinals one not surprised, Midwest
- 25:11Speaker 1: nice Orioles, two Nationals three not surprised, mid Atlantic nice Phillies,
- 25:18Speaker 1: four Tigers five from the Surprise Phillies four AJ Phillies fans.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Top five.
- 25:26Speaker 4: I think they used because just because they didn't curse
- 25:29Speaker 4: maybe on there reddit, but the Tigers two five polite.
- 25:32Speaker 4: I would have thought it would have been the opposite
- 25:34Speaker 4: would have been Twins versus and the Tigers fans would
- 25:36Speaker 4: have gone on the other side because I usually got
- 25:38Speaker 4: more vitriol in Detroit than I did in Minnesota. I
- 25:41Speaker 4: mean forgetting that wasn't my fault, guys, but blame Terry Ryan.
- 25:46Speaker 4: But yeah, the Phillies polite, like have anyone ever been
- 25:52Speaker 4: to a Phillies game. I mean, Cardinals, sure, they give
- 25:55Speaker 4: a standing ovation to everybody, Orioles now, it's fine, but
- 25:58Speaker 4: the Phillies at four, I mean, they just must not
- 26:00Speaker 4: cuss when they write their little chat things.
- 26:03Speaker 6: They must just cuss in real life.
- 26:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:05Speaker 1: I respect the process and how many comments they were
- 26:08Speaker 1: able to dig into, but it is heavily shifted towards
- 26:14Speaker 1: where the teams are at. And I know that's not
- 26:17Speaker 1: a completely fair cross examination based on the Yankees and
- 26:21Speaker 1: Red Sox playing pretty well over the past year and
- 26:23Speaker 1: the Red Sox not this year, of course, but this
- 26:25Speaker 1: study mostly had to do with beginning of last season
- 26:28Speaker 1: up to this season, right up to really the beginning
- 26:31Speaker 1: of this season. So if you're a Phillies fan last year,
- 26:35Speaker 1: you were pretty happy. During the regular season, team looked good,
- 26:38Speaker 1: you had some heartbreak in the playoffs. To me, aj,
- 26:41Speaker 1: you're not getting the same ticked off comments that would
- 26:45Speaker 1: lead to the cursing.
- 26:46Speaker 2: The cursing is often leading.
- 26:48Speaker 4: To twenty fifteen, Go to twenty fifteen, twenty four when
- 26:52Speaker 4: they were terrible for the Yeah, exactly, they were.
- 26:57Speaker 6: They were awful. I mean, I don't know.
- 27:00Speaker 4: I look at it more of like when I think
- 27:02Speaker 4: about teams I played against and the fans and the
- 27:04Speaker 4: way they reacted. Like Mariners fans never really had much
- 27:07Speaker 4: reaction to a lot of stuff. Rockies fans never really cared,
- 27:12Speaker 4: you know, Orioles. There was never a ton of fans there,
- 27:15Speaker 4: So that was it was. It was weird because Paul
- 27:16Speaker 4: Park was beautiful and they weren't. They weren't very good
- 27:19Speaker 4: a lot for a long time. Nationals were good when
- 27:22Speaker 4: I played against them, so they were always happy. Yeah,
- 27:26Speaker 4: I mean, I mean Yankees, Red Sox, Oakland A's Rais
- 27:31Speaker 4: fans were always super nice. I can't I can't say
- 27:34Speaker 4: anything about Rais fans. Blue Jays fans they were fine.
- 27:38Speaker 4: I mean, it's it's different, I guess for players than
- 27:40Speaker 4: it is for what they write in the chat rooms.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll give you the negative and the positive fandoms.
- 27:46Speaker 1: So one had to do with language, and one had
- 27:48Speaker 1: to do with positivity and negativity. So here is the
- 27:51Speaker 1: most negative fandoms one through five in a study done
- 27:55Speaker 1: from April of twenty five up until April of twenty
- 27:58Speaker 1: twenty six.
- 27:59Speaker 2: Right, Socks are one again. We have the Yankees and
- 28:03Speaker 2: the Red Sox on here. Zero surprise. You have the
- 28:05Speaker 2: a'son here. Number two. Yankees were three, Marlins are four,
- 28:09Speaker 2: Mets are five.
- 28:11Speaker 4: Not very surprised, Red Sox not a surprise. Sacramento Athletics
- 28:15Speaker 4: not surprising because they're mad about the move. Yankees fans
- 28:18Speaker 4: are just mad because they're rerunning the team again. But
- 28:20Speaker 4: they're actually doing really well, so I can't you know.
- 28:22Speaker 6: That's why.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Marlins? What do they have to be negati about? They
- 28:25Speaker 4: knew what they're getting into. It's been the same with
- 28:27Speaker 4: the Marlins for years and the Mets right now. They're
- 28:29Speaker 4: just negative because they stink. So I get most of
- 28:32Speaker 4: this list. The Marlins, though, what are they negative about?
- 28:34Speaker 4: They knew what they were having. What they expect the
- 28:36Speaker 4: ownership group to go and spend millions and millions of dollars,
- 28:39Speaker 4: They don't do that they just don't, so I don't
- 28:41Speaker 4: know what they should be negative about.
- 28:42Speaker 6: They got a nice stadium, they just go to it.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that one was surprising to see on there.
- 28:48Speaker 1: I mean, I know there's frustration, but usually it's almost
- 28:50Speaker 1: like quiet frustration. But they're going off percentages here, not
- 28:54Speaker 1: quantity of comments. There's probably way less comments from the
- 28:58Speaker 1: Marlins based on market size compared to Yankees, Red Sox,
- 29:01Speaker 1: and also just how many fans they have.
- 29:04Speaker 2: But I guess the ones that.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Are there are not too pleased from last season heading
- 29:08Speaker 1: into this season. And lastly, this plays exactly in to
- 29:11Speaker 1: your point about Rockies fans. They are just loving life
- 29:14Speaker 1: out there in Denver, even though the game got banged
- 29:17Speaker 1: tonight because I think it's like freezing rain, you know,
- 29:21Speaker 1: in early May out in Denver. But they were voted
- 29:23Speaker 1: or they were ranked as the most positive fandom in
- 29:28Speaker 1: baseball when they evaluated the blogs. Rockies won, Cardinals, two Nationals,
- 29:35Speaker 1: three Pirates for Orioles five. I guess it's good living
- 29:39Speaker 1: down in the Beltway too, huh.
- 29:42Speaker 4: I mean, Rockies, it's because they're a mile high that
- 29:46Speaker 4: they're positive and they have good beer in course field.
- 29:51Speaker 4: Cardinals fans are positive about everything. Pirates fans are positive
- 29:56Speaker 4: because they actually did spend some money this year, so
- 29:58Speaker 4: that's good. Nationals Yeah, I mean, I guess they're hoping
- 30:01Speaker 4: James would and those teams and then the Orioles.
- 30:03Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't, I don't.
- 30:05Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess because they're they're hope with hope, right,
- 30:08Speaker 4: and those teams. A lot of those teams have hope,
- 30:09Speaker 4: and hope is a good thing.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Yeah, And most Orioles fans were, of course pretty perturbed
- 30:16Speaker 1: last season, but then in the offseason, most of them
- 30:18Speaker 1: were pretty pumped when they got peed Alonzo. So that's
- 30:20Speaker 1: where you saw a lot of positivity. Good segment. Interesting.
- 30:24Speaker 1: I'd like to look at these studies. There's some things
- 30:26Speaker 1: that always shock the world. Yeah, exactly,
