- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Welcome to another episode of 5-Minute Parenting.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Today's topic is helping our children find God confidence.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: We've all read statistics about how child and teen depression has been on the steady rise since COVID and with the increasing popularity of social media.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Bullying is also on the rise, and right behind it is teen suicide.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: In my first podcast, Helping Children Develop a Biblical Worldview, I talk about how social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok are under attack for their psychological and emotional impacts on children and teens, making them feel they don't measure up.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: They struggle with the polished images they see online.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Just one statistic says one in five teens say that Instagram makes them feel worse about themselves.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: In her book, Raising God Competent Kids, Cindy Claypool Deneve says there's a confidence crisis in our generation of hurting kids and confused parents struggling to guide them through an obstacle course of stressors unique to this error.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: To respond to this crisis by telling our kids that they're the best, prettiest, smartest, and strongest is overstroking their confidence while teetering on creating entitled narcissists.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: We set our kids up for failure when we teach them to be self-confident, which is solely based on how we how they feel about their strengths, talents, competence, and looks, and is often determined by what others say about them.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: So instead of self-confidence, she says we need to help our children build God confidence.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: But what is God confidence?
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: God confidence is knowing that the God of the universe handcrafted each of us for a purpose and that he will give us strength, courage, and wisdom, and all the gifts we need to do the task he has set before us.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Self-confidence promotes relying on oneself to accomplish our own purpose, but God confidence reminds us to rely on God.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: As parents, we need to be encouraging our children to build their confidence on Christ, who designed each of them for a unique purpose.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: We need to encourage our children through their many stages of growth to discover their true purpose and passion and the gifts and talents God has given them.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Second, teaching them that God loves them and promises to work all things together for good.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Even the most traumatic moments which life brings to each of us helps our children develop the God confidence needed to face our ever-changing world.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: And let them see your trusting God when you face traumatic experiences.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Third, we need to remind our children that we all have strengths and weaknesses, and we can learn through both of them how to trust God more.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Remind them that they are still growing and learning about themselves.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Next year, five years from now, ten years from now, they will feel differently about themselves.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: They will discover new interests, have new friends, discover new gifts and talents God has given them.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: Help them stand firm on the foundation that God loves them and wants to have a relationship with them.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: He not only loves them, he likes them and wants to spend time with them.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Denez says, quote, imagine with me the impact of a generation of children and teens who are God confident, looking to Christ for their joy, strength, wisdom, and purpose.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: They would grow into adults who positively impact the world of business, politics, media, education, science, medicine, or whatever purpose God has designed for each of them.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: When humbly standing on the rock of their faith, Christ's grace, love, and compassion would pour forth from each one, becoming a salve, a salve to our hurting world and helping them find their purpose and confidence in Christ.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: End quote.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: So let's work on helping our children develop God confidence.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: I wanted to share some exciting news.
