- 0:00Chapter 5 from the book of Daniel.
- 0:03Dear Lord, please open our hearts, our minds, our thoughts
- 0:09and let us receive what you have given to Daniel in this book so
- 0:16that we might apply it to our lives.
- 0:21Learn more and let the Holy Spirit reveal things to us.
- 0:25We ask this in Jesus name, Amen. This is called the writing on
- 0:30the wall. King Belshazzar gave a great
- 0:34banquet for 1000 of his nobles and drank wine with them.
- 0:39While Belshazzar was drinking his wine, he gave orders to
- 0:44bring in the gold and silver goblets that Nebuchadnezzar, his
- 0:48father, had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the
- 0:52king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines might drink
- 0:56from them. So they brought in gold goblets
- 1:00that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, and
- 1:04the kings and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank
- 1:08from them. As they drank the wine, they
- 1:12praised the gods plural of gold and silver, of bronze, ironwood,
- 1:20and stone. So I'll pause here because don't
- 1:24you think that's really going to upset God?
- 1:29We saw something in chapter 4 about Nebuchadnezzar, where it
- 1:32seems like Nebuchadnezzar, his eyes were opened, but it's
- 1:37interesting that his son, who is now King Belshazzar has no, he
- 1:44didn't follow along. And we did see that same sort of
- 1:48thing when we looked at the accounts of all of the kings of
- 1:52Israel and all of the kings of Judah.
- 1:56Like none of the kings of Israel were considered good.
- 1:59They were considered evil by God.
- 2:02And then about half of the kings of Judah were considered good.
- 2:08That followed after God that obeyed him.
- 2:11And then the other half, it was roughly that much, that many.
- 2:14I guess we're not. And so we see that, you know,
- 2:19there's a greater tendency even among God's own chosen people
- 2:25that don't follow him, people that are put as who are placed
- 2:28as kings. So we have to realize that God
- 2:32is in control of who he appoints.
- 2:34That's what this chapter and the prior chapter tells us that God
- 2:38appoints leaders, but it doesn't mean that the leaders got
- 2:42appoints are necessarily holy men or men like like David was,
- 2:49that God said David was a man after his own heart.
- 2:53Like David had this desire to be close to God.
- 2:57He wasn't a perfect man, but he had a desire to be close to God.
- 3:02But then we see how most people, probably all people, I'm not all
- 3:09people, but I mean, when you speak most people, let's
- 3:12probably you could probably say around the whole world, they're
- 3:17not necessarily turned towards God.
- 3:21And that's when God often let's ungodly rulers rule over them
- 3:29when they've turned away from him because he's not blessing
- 3:32them at that point. And so, but we also see that
- 3:36just because somebody's parent saw that, found the true God,
- 3:42realized who the true God was, because that's how he came out
- 3:45of his circumstances where he was given this insane mind.
- 3:49And he came out of that when he finally acknowledged God and
- 3:55praised the one true God and not these multiple gods that they
- 3:58were worshiping, these Pagan gods that they were worshiping.
- 4:01But think about this. So the son now like
- 4:04Nebuchadnezzar went through this.
- 4:06I have no idea, like how old the son was when this happened to
- 4:09his dad, but apparently he didn't learn from it.
- 4:13And so he is, you know, enjoying the riches that his family had
- 4:20acquired through probably not the best means of doing so by
- 4:29just taking them. And, and of course, you know,
- 4:32they're using goblets from God's temple that they took away from
- 4:36Jerusalem and they're drinking out of them and they're praising
- 4:41other gods. You know, this isn't going to go
- 4:44well, so look what God does. Suddenly the fingers of a human
- 4:51hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall near the
- 4:56lamp stand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it
- 5:02wrote. His face turned pale and he was
- 5:06so frightened that his legs became weak and his knees were
- 5:11knocking. The king summoned the
- 5:13enchanters, astrologers, and diviners.
- 5:17Then he said to these wise men of Babylon, Whoever reads this
- 5:23writing and tells me what it means will be clothed in purple
- 5:28and have a gold chain placed around his neck, and he will be
- 5:31made the third highest ruler in the Kingdom.
- 5:35Then all the King's wise men came in, but they could not read
- 5:39the writing or tell the king what it meant.
- 5:42So King Belshazzar became even more terrified and his face grew
- 5:48more pale. His nobles were baffled.
- 5:52Could you imagine that, you know, seeing a hand appear and
- 5:56then some writing on the wall, but you don't know what it says.
- 5:59I mean, that would just be really scary.
- 6:02I mean, that would scare anyone to see that, and nobody knows
- 6:07what it means. So that's the situation they're
- 6:11in then. The Queen, hearing the voices of
- 6:14the king and his nobles, came into the banquet hall.
- 6:17May the king live forever, she said.
- 6:20Don't be alarmed. Don't look so pale.
- 6:22There is a man in your Kingdom who has the spirit of the holy
- 6:26gods in him, she says. Plural gods.
- 6:29She doesn't. Also, she doesn't know God
- 6:31either, but she knows about him, and so she's bringing this up to
- 6:37the the king in the time of your father, he was found to have
- 6:43insight and intelligence and wisdom like that of the gods.
- 6:49She's a plural. Your father, King
- 6:51Nebuchadnezzar, appointed him chief of the magicians,
- 6:55enchanters, astrologers and diviners.
- 6:58He did this because Daniel, whom the king called Beltashazzar,
- 7:02was found to have a keen mind and knowledge and understanding,
- 7:06and also the ability to interpret dreams, explain
- 7:10riddles and solve difficult problems.
- 7:14Call for Daniel and he will tell you what the writing means.
- 7:18So Daniel was brought before the king, and the king said to him,
- 7:22Are you Daniel, one of the Exiles my father the king
- 7:26brought from Judah? I have heard that the spirit of
- 7:29the gods is in you, and that you have insight, intelligence, and
- 7:32outstanding wisdom. The wise men and enchanters were
- 7:36brought before me to read this writing and tell me what it
- 7:39means, but they cannot explain it.
- 7:42Now, I have heard that you are able to give interpretations and
- 7:46do solve difficult problems. If you can read this writing and
- 7:50tell me what it means, you will be clothed in purple and have a
- 7:54gold chain placed around your neck, and you will be made the
- 7:58third highest ruler in the Kingdom.
- 8:01Then Daniel answered the king. You may keep your gifts for
- 8:05yourself and give your rewards to someone else.
- 8:08Nevertheless, I will read the writing for the King and tell
- 8:12him what it means. Your Majesty, the Most High God
- 8:17gave your Father Nebuchadnezzar sovereignty and greatness and
- 8:23glory and splendor. Because of the high position He
- 8:28gave him, all the nations and peoples of every language
- 8:32dreaded him, are dreaded and feared him.
- 8:36Those the King wanted to put to death, he put to death.
- 8:40Those he wanted to spare, he spared.
- 8:43Those he wanted to promote, he promoted, and those he wanted to
- 8:47humble, he humbled. But when his heart became
- 8:52arrogant and hardened with pride, he was deposed from his
- 8:57royal throne and stripped of his glory.
- 9:02He was driven away from the people and given the mind of an
- 9:06animal. He lived with wild the wild
- 9:09donkeys and ate grass like an ox, and his body was drenched
- 9:14with the dew of heaven until he acknowledged that the Most High
- 9:19God is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and sets over
- 9:23them anyone he wishes. So also again, we always like to
- 9:28look at when God points out things like why did this happen
- 9:34to Nebuchadnezzar? And it gives the reason it says
- 9:38in verse 20. But when his heart became
- 9:41arrogant and hardened with pride, when he when he was
- 9:46thinking it was all about him, he was deposed from his royal
- 9:51throne and stripped of his glory.
- 9:54That's where God humbled him, and God still does that today.
- 9:59And because he hates pride, and pride has no place in God's
- 10:03Kingdom. And so if people who want to be
- 10:09in God's Kingdom and make that known to God and they become
- 10:13prideful, he will humble them. And I kind of felt like God did
- 10:20that to me. So but then verse 22 says, but
- 10:25you Belshazzar, his son, have not humbled yourself though you
- 10:31knew all of this. So now this is scary because
- 10:35this is like when God can do judgement.
- 10:39God is always fair. God is just and he doesn't do
- 10:45things that aren't just basically because he.
- 10:53So here we see that Belshazzar. He saw the stuff that happened
- 10:57to his dad, but he just didn't. And he knew what happened, but
- 11:02he was just going to do things his own way.
- 11:04And he was prideful and he was just, it didn't have any impact
- 11:11on him. And that's the thing about
- 11:13really what we read in the Bible is that there are stories, there
- 11:17are accounts, these are historical documented accounts,
- 11:21many of them that are in the Bible that they truly did
- 11:24happen. These aren't just like made-up
- 11:26stories. These are real accounts of real
- 11:29people who these things happen to, and they serve as a warning
- 11:38to us because if we listen, if we pay attention to what it
- 11:43says, we can learn from that. And the good thing about that is
- 11:47if you learn from it and then you avoid the mistakes somebody
- 11:51else made, then you may not have the consequences that they did.
- 11:57But if you read it and you don't apply it to your life and you
- 12:01don't learn anything from it, and you do the same things that
- 12:05the people in the Bible did, do you think that God's going to
- 12:10treat you any differently? Like he's, it says he has no
- 12:14favoritism, just like his own chosen people, the Israelites.
- 12:20He let an enemy leader come in, capture them, take them into
- 12:25exile, kill many of them. God allowed that.
- 12:29He was sovereign over all of that and he did it because they
- 12:34were worshipped. They were into idolatry.
- 12:38They they were not honoring God. And so we can tell from this
- 12:44history, this happens over and over again.
- 12:46It seems like it's always idolatry where something becomes
- 12:49more important to people than God.
- 12:53And that can happen to us too. We can get, we can have things
- 12:56in our life that become more important to us than God.
- 13:01But when that happens, we need to be very careful.
- 13:05We need to actually stop it because if we don't, there is a
- 13:11possibility that something like this could happen to us when we
- 13:17do it, because God doesn't show any favoritism.
- 13:20He has a lot of mercy and a lot of compassion, and He's very
- 13:24patient. So we can't say when this will
- 13:27happen to a person because we do see people who do these things
- 13:31and seem like they're getting away with it.
- 13:33But in all cases, it's God being patient and merciful with the
- 13:38person, hoping that they come to repentance.
- 13:42But there will be a day when Jesus returns that that time is
- 13:46going to be up. And if the person has not
- 13:50repented or changed their ways or received the Holy Spirit,
- 13:55surrendered to God believing in Jesus, if they, if they, you
- 13:59know, had their minds set against it, like, no, I'm not
- 14:02going to do any of that. Then when he comes, they're
- 14:06going to be subject to wrath. And the Bible does describe
- 14:11that. So just because it hasn't
- 14:15happened yet doesn't mean that it's not going to happen.
- 14:19In fact, when you see all of these Bible prophecies that were
- 14:22written hundreds and thousands of years before they actually
- 14:25occurred, you'll, you'll know that you know, those happened.
- 14:31There are some things that still haven't happened that are coming
- 14:33in the future. So basically this is just a, a
- 14:36warning. Like look at what happened to
- 14:38these people, apply it to our lives and make sure that we
- 14:43don't make the same mistakes that these other people made.
- 14:46That's why God puts these things in the Bible so that we can get
- 14:50to know what happens. Be forewarned because God always
- 14:54gives warning. Just like Belshazzar, He had
- 14:57warning by seeing his own dad go through this.
- 15:02So verse 23 says, instead, you have set yourself up against the
- 15:07Lord of heaven. You had the goblets from his
- 15:12temple brought to you, and you and your nobles, your wives,
- 15:17your concubines, drank from them.
- 15:20You praised the gods of silver, of gold, of bronze, ironwood,
- 15:26and stone which cannot see or hear or understand.
- 15:31But you did not honor the God who holds in his hands your life
- 15:38and all your ways. I mean, we, you know, he's
- 15:43Daniel's telling this to King Nebuchadnezzar's son.
- 15:47And but this also, you know, like this also applies to us.
- 15:52Like we need to like, are we honoring God?
- 15:55Because God holds our life. He gives us the breath that
- 15:59starts our life and he ends our life when he decides time is up.
- 16:05And if we are not honoring him by the time of our death, we
- 16:09will be separated from him. So God gives us this whole like,
- 16:14I didn't even understand this when before I read the Bible and
- 16:18it took a while of studying it too, that this time that we're
- 16:21here on the earth is basically our, our testing period, our our
- 16:26time frame that we need, we have to make a decision within it.
- 16:31And if some people want to say, well, I'm just going to put that
- 16:34off. If I'm not going to make a
- 16:36decision right now or I'm going to be like part this way, part
- 16:39that way. If you don't fully submit to God
- 16:44and fully acknowledge God's sovereignty and what Jesus did
- 16:49on the cross, if you don't at that point in your time frame,
- 16:55you will be, you are subject to God's wrath and you are
- 16:58separated from God. So if you died at that moment,
- 17:01you would be separated from God for eternity.
- 17:04There's no like second chances. I mean, we have lots of chances
- 17:09here while we're on earth. But once we die, there's that's,
- 17:14that's it, that's it. Then comes judgement.
- 17:18So what we decide here and what we do here on earth is so
- 17:24critical and so important. And I think there's a lot of
- 17:27people who don't realize that or don't take this seriously, but
- 17:33it is real. It is true.
- 17:36The more you get into the word of God and you see these
- 17:39prophecies that were foretold that occurred.
- 17:42And I mean, there we were talking about this in a prior
- 17:46podcast about how Jesus fulfilled about 500.
- 17:50Some scholars say prophecies and just the, the statistical
- 17:56possibility that one person could fulfill that many
- 18:00prophecies is just, it's, it's impossible.
- 18:06So these things that these statistical things that can be
- 18:11proven are proof that Jesus is who he said he was the Son of
- 18:17God. Jesus revealed himself to people
- 18:22so that more people could enter the Kingdom of God.
- 18:26That's what he was here for. He came here to save all of us,
- 18:31to give us that possibility, that not possibility, that
- 18:35opportunity to be in God's Kingdom.
- 18:38But we have to believe him and then we have to receive the Holy
- 18:43Spirit. And that's, that's kind of like,
- 18:45well, we have to repent of our sins.
- 18:47We have to, you know, believe who he is.
- 18:50And if we believe who he is and we understand that we are sinful
- 18:53and we can't do it on our own, the only way that we can get
- 18:56into the Kingdom of God is through Jesus.
- 18:59He said I am the way, the truth and the life, and no one comes
- 19:01to the Father except through me. And he also said that unless you
- 19:05were born again, unless we become a new creation, unless we
- 19:09have that Holy Spirit, that's what the born again is.
- 19:12Unless we have the Holy Spirit, we're not going to be in the
- 19:15Kingdom of God. So anybody who wants to be in
- 19:22God's Kingdom, because the alternative to that is not
- 19:27present, you may think it's just going to be like a party.
- 19:30The way that some of the world who is against God, they portray
- 19:34it as do whatever you want and have as much fun as you want.
- 19:38No, you're going to be in slavery to your sin.
- 19:42The Bible. It's like eternal torture.
- 19:45It's not a good thing. And people are being deceived by
- 19:49thinking it's just going to be a big party.
- 19:53But it's not. When you read the Bible and the
- 19:55Bible is true, it's not just a made-up like, you know, a
- 20:00made-up story that people like to tell other people.
- 20:04No, this is this is reality. This is kind of the, I think it
- 20:09was Rick Warren referred to the Bible as the owner's manual for
- 20:13the earth or for our life. And if you're not reading the
- 20:17owner's manual, you don't know how it works.
- 20:20So this is for our benefit. This is all written down South.
- 20:25Verse 24. It says, you know, so it says to
- 20:28the Daniel saying to the Son, but you did not honor the God
- 20:31who holds in his hand your life in all your ways.
- 20:35Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription, This
- 20:41inscription that was written meanie, meanie teckel Parson.
- 20:48Here is what these words mean. Many are many.
- 20:52I'm not sure how to say these. God has numbered the days of
- 20:56your reign and brought it to an end.
- 21:00See, right there we see God puts people in power and he takes
- 21:05them out of power when he decides he's seeing that the
- 21:09sun. God knows the heart.
- 21:11So like we could, you know, have discernment and say, well, he's
- 21:16not really following God. He's turned away from God, but
- 21:20God knows his heart. God knows whether he ever will
- 21:24because he knows just the tendon that, you know, he knows how
- 21:27people, their willful choices and he can see.
- 21:32And there's a certain point where I think God gives all
- 21:34these opportunities. And there's a certain point
- 21:36where he's, I'm, I'm speaking just like this is speculation,
- 21:41where God just, you know, he sees that, no, they're never
- 21:44going to turn. They're never going to do it.
- 21:46You know, I keep coming to them. I keep, you know, giving them
- 21:48this message. And they keep ignoring me.
- 21:50They keep blowing me off. And I know them because God
- 21:56knows us. We may not know him, but he
- 21:59knows us because he created us. But He gave us free will and He
- 22:02watches us. He knows every little hair on
- 22:04our head and he knows every single thing that we did, even
- 22:08when we try and hide it from people.
- 22:10God knows what we did. God even knows our intentions
- 22:14behind it. Not just our visible actions,
- 22:17but our intentions to our thoughts, our motivation in all
- 22:21that we do. He knows all of that.
- 22:24So we can't escape God. God knows us better than any
- 22:28other human being could ever or anything else could ever know
- 22:31us. God knows us better.
- 22:33So when God says your time's up and now justice is coming on
- 22:38you, it's it is justice. I mean, God, God is so merciful,
- 22:44compassion and loving that when he finally decides that you can,
- 22:48you can know that it was time. And so he's bringing Beltashez
- 22:55or Belshazzar, the son of Nebuchadnezzar to an end.
- 23:00Tico means you have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
- 23:07So this is his judgement. He's he's not doing well on the
- 23:13scales. Paris or Paris is what it says.
- 23:18Your Kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.
- 23:24So Babylon, who is conquering everything, just like God took
- 23:29away the territory from Israel. The Assyrians captured them
- 23:37first, and then those were the 10 tribes, and then he took it
- 23:41away from Judah and had the Babylonians capture the tribe of
- 23:46Judah and Benjamin. Those two were together.
- 23:49So those kingdoms were just like scattered apart.
- 23:53They were all like destroyed because of their idolatry,
- 23:57because they were not honoring God now.
- 24:01And God used Babylon to do it. So God used him and he did what
- 24:06God needed him to do, which was bringing punishment on to the
- 24:11people of Judah, hoping that they would repent of what they
- 24:14had done. And now it still was not good
- 24:19because he didn't. God didn't like what Babylon
- 24:22did. So then judgment comes on
- 24:25Babylon, and who does he use for that but the Medes and the
- 24:30Persians, which is the territory of Iran today.
- 24:35And so when we look at what's happening in the world and
- 24:38history and look at our people honoring God or not honoring
- 24:44God, and a lot of times we see that God repeats things.
- 24:49And so I wonder how much of this repetition, like, what role is
- 24:53Iran going to have? Like will God use Iran for his
- 24:58club basically against nations of people who are not honoring
- 25:04him? I don't know.
- 25:07I don't know what's going to happen.
- 25:08But we do see these things and I think it should be a a strong
- 25:13warning to all of us that we need to turn to God and not
- 25:18delay in doing this. OK.
- 25:21Verse 29 Then at Belshazzar's command, Daniel with was clothed
- 25:27in purple, a gold chain was placed around his neck and he
- 25:31was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the Kingdom.
- 25:34That's really interesting. After Daniel tells Belshazzar
- 25:38this terrible stuff about what's going to happen to him, he he,
- 25:44he honors his word, what he said he would do for Daniel.
- 25:48Now look at this. But that doesn't change
- 25:51anything. Was he trying for last minute,
- 25:53you know, restoration? I don't know.
- 25:56But verse 30 says that very night, Belshazzar, king of the
- 26:02Babylonians, was slain, and Darius the Mede took over the
- 26:09Kingdom at the age of 62. And that's the end of chapter 5
- 26:15S God used an enemy. The enemy, you know, did what
- 26:22God wanted him to do to, you know, bring the people of Judah
- 26:28to repentance. And then God was then judgment
- 26:32came upon Babylon. And that's what it's going to do
- 26:34in the in the end times too. There is a mystery Babylon in
- 26:38the end times and the things that you know, that's that the
- 26:42mystery Babylon and the beast, they're going to be conquering a
- 26:45lot of the world, but then God is going to destroy them.
- 26:51So he doesn't let the destroyers complete their goal, but he does
- 26:58let him do a certain amount. So I'm going to go through the
- 27:01questions and answers from chapter 5 and then wrap it up.
- 27:08So how and when did did Belshazzar become king?
- 27:12After ruling for nearly 45 years, Nebuchadnezzar died in
- 27:17562 BC. Three weak kings followed before
- 27:25Naboni. Nabonidis came to power in 555
- 27:29BC. Nabonidis oldest son Belshazzar
- 27:34became Co Regent with his father about 550 BC.
- 27:40He controlled the army and government alone for about 10
- 27:44years while his father was away. When Belshazzar called
- 27:49Nebuchadnezzar his father, he probably meant simply that he
- 27:54was a successor of Nebuchadnezzar.
- 27:57OK so I didn't realize that but the study Bible so I misspoke.
- 28:02He wasn't literally his father, but a successor, so correct
- 28:09that. OK, Why was using temple goblets
- 28:12so offensive to God? These cups dedicated for worship
- 28:16in God's temple had been stored in the Temple of Bel, which I
- 28:21think is Satan, as trophies of war.
- 28:24When Belshazzar's revellers used the goblets to toss their idols,
- 28:30they were declaring in effect that God, if he existed at all
- 28:34at all, was subordinate to the gods of Babylon.
- 28:38Who were these gods? These gods were not identified,
- 28:41but people of the region worshipped hundreds of gods.
- 28:45Some estimates run as high as 25101.
- 28:49Babylonian inscription reveals that in Babylon there were 53
- 28:54temples of the chief gods, 55 chapels of Marduk, the chief
- 29:02deity, 900 chapels for other gods, and more than 370
- 29:08additional altars. I really had no idea there was
- 29:13that much of that. OK, what was it wrong for Daniel
- 29:18to be in charge of things God abhors?
- 29:22Becoming chief of the magicians and others didn't necessarily
- 29:26mean Daniel had authority over them.
- 29:28This phrase may simply mean simply have acknowledged
- 29:33Daniel's superior wisdom and ability to interpret dreams.
- 29:38Even if this was an official position, there is no evidence
- 29:42that Daniel was involved in a cult activities, all of which
- 29:45God had declared to be off limits.
- 29:49From Deuteronomy chapter 18 verses 9 through 12.
- 29:53How old was Daniel by this time? Daniel was about 15 years old
- 29:59when he was taken captive in six O 5 BC and the Babylonian Empire
- 30:05fell in 539 BC. We can estimate that Daniel was
- 30:10around 76 years old at this time.
- 30:15Wasn't it dangerous to speak to the king this way?
- 30:20Daniel had earned A reputation for fearlessly telling the truth
- 30:23about dreams and visions. This likely made it easier for
- 30:28him to refuse the King's gifts and honors.
- 30:31Daniel worked to promote God's glory, not his own.
- 30:38If God is God responsible for bad government, we might expect
- 30:44an all powerful God to place only righteous leaders in
- 30:47office. But he uses both good and bad
- 30:51rulers to achieve his purposes. Nebuchadnezzar carried out God's
- 30:56plan to discipline Judah, just as Roman persecution later
- 31:02strengthened the church and advanced the spread of the
- 31:05gospel. God will judge evil rulers, but
- 31:10for reasons unknown to us, He allows sinful leaders and sinful
- 31:15flower followers, including us, to live and even prosper.
- 31:20In what language was the handwriting on the wall?
- 31:23These the words were Aramaic, a language widely known in the
- 31:29gentile world. It isn't clear why Belshazzar's
- 31:33wise men couldn't read the words, but it's obvious why
- 31:37Daniel. Why Daniel's explanation was
- 31:40needed. Many could could mean numbered
- 31:44or could refer to a 1 1/4 LB weight called Amina tic.
- 31:50Tico, could mean weighed, or could refer to 2/5 of an ounce
- 31:56weight called a shekel. Paris, the single Parisian
- 32:01Parson, could mean divided or Persia, 1/2 shekel or a half
- 32:07MENA. Without a context, the words
- 32:11seemed meaningless. Why was Daniel rewarded for such
- 32:15a negative interpretation? Belshazzar had promised that
- 32:19whoever explained the meaning of the writing on the wall would
- 32:22receive purple clothing, gold chain, and the third highest
- 32:26position in the Kingdom, so he simply did what he had promised.
- 32:30Belshazzar didn't like what he heard, but he must have
- 32:34recognized the truth that he had dishonored the Most High God and
- 32:39deserved to be punished. Who was Darius the Mede?
- 32:43There is no record of such an individual outside of the Bible.
- 32:48This was probably a local name for Cyrus the Great, the ruler
- 32:55of Medio Persian Empire that conquered Babylon in 539 BC.
- 33:02Some have suggested that Darius is another name either for
- 33:08Ubaru, the governor Cyrus put in charge of Babylon, or for U or
- 33:14Ubaru, who led the Persian's army the Persian army's assault.
- 33:20Still others think Darius was another name for Cyrus's son
- 33:26Canbassis, who ruled Persia several years later.
- 33:32So sometimes the names get make it confusing for us because of
- 33:35the different names that people were called.
- 33:38Anyway, that is the end of chapter 5.
