Transcript
- 0:02Hello, welcome to He's hot, but something's off.
- 0:06OK, I hope you're all watching the YouTube version, the video
- 0:09version of this podcast available on my YouTube channel.
- 0:13Just Joey T I'm making some lighting adjustments.
- 0:18It's been bugging me that this wall behind me that I podcast in
- 0:24front of has it. It's fine that it's a plain
- 0:29wall. You know, I've got a shelf
- 0:31there, just the shelf that's beside the entrance to my
- 0:35apartment. And then to my other side is a
- 0:38fake bamboo tree from IKEA. But otherwise between these two
- 0:43objects, it's just this like plain white wall.
- 0:47And it was like a dark wall without any lighting.
- 0:50And it's been bugging me for quite some time now how ugly the
- 0:55background looks on the podcast. I talked about, I think on the
- 0:59last episode, the episode before, about all the various
- 1:02backgrounds I've had. And I've decided to do something
- 1:05about the ugly grey background. I described it.
- 1:09I was on, I was on AI, and I was asking AI for suggestions about
- 1:17how to spruce up the background of my video podcast.
- 1:22And the way I described it was, you know, I'm well lit.
- 1:27I've got a ring light and I've got a box light, right, kind of
- 1:32just behind the camera. So I look good, I think.
- 1:36But the wall behind me is not lit.
- 1:40And I told Chad GBT that it looks like I'm in a dark
- 1:45basement, which I'm not. I don't have a basement.
- 1:48This is just my apartment. But I got this LED light that I
- 1:54put on the floor right in front of the wall behind me.
- 1:57So if you're watching the video version, I don't haven't edited
- 2:01this video as I'm still recording it right now.
- 2:04So it looks it looks OK. It looks like it doesn't look
- 2:07like I'm in a dark ass room now, right.
- 2:09There's a little bit of a, there's a little bit of light on
- 2:12that wall behind me I can kind of see in the monitor on my
- 2:15camera. So yeah, I'm going to tweak it.
- 2:19But I really wanted a nicer, not a nicer setup per SE.
- 2:23You know, I've got a very nice recorder slash mixer that I got
- 2:28second hand on eBay, which is how just about every episode of
- 2:32the podcast it's recorded via this one piece of equipment.
- 2:36It has the intro music it's got, it does the recording, it throws
- 2:40it onto an SD card. My mic is connected to it.
- 2:43It's like a super awesome handy piece of equipment.
- 2:46It's AI like I it's my ride or die.
- 2:48That's like the one core piece of podcasting equipment, the
- 2:52ring light that is in front of me.
- 2:54I've had it forever. I didn't buy for podcasting.
- 2:58I got it for, but I did get it for my YouTube, you know, on my
- 3:02YouTube for quite a few years now, I'll do videos where I just
- 3:09sit down in front of the camera and I just talk at the camera.
- 3:12And you know, I, I don't do tons of those, but like there's like
- 3:18a few every year on my YouTube channel where it's my living
- 3:23room and I just sit in front of the camera and I got the ring
- 3:26light for that. It was my first attempt to get
- 3:29some sort of lighting to spruce up my YouTube videos.
- 3:32I got that who had her like some.
- 3:35It's actually been about like 7 or 8 years since I got this rain
- 3:38light from Amazon. And then more recently I had I
- 3:43had a fan who was very generous and bought me some soft box
- 3:49lights as a gift from Amazon. And that was just like a couple
- 3:54years ago, and that's the lighting that you are seeing
- 3:57now. So I want to upgrade the
- 3:58lighting, especially with the big announcement that I've been
- 4:04teasing. You know, I wanted to look good
- 4:08for that big announcement, even though only three of you are
- 4:12listening or watching the YouTube episodes.
- 4:14But yeah, let me know what you think of if you have ideas for
- 4:17how I can spruce up this background.
- 4:20Actually have actually, there's a lot of art that's behind.
- 4:24There's a lot of art on the walls that's behind the camera.
- 4:28So if you go back to my video podcast episodes from early this
- 4:33year, from early this year, and then you see there's some art
- 4:38that's in the background of those episodes.
- 4:42And there are three letter airport codes for different
- 4:45airports in different places. So probably the one that you saw
- 4:51the big red 1 and it says BCN on it.
- 4:54That's the airport three letter code for Barcelona.
- 4:58So I'm actually staring at it right now.
- 5:00I'm just on the other side of that table where I recorded
- 5:03those old episodes. I won't bore you with the
- 5:07complicated OCD very Joey specific reasons why that's not
- 5:13my background anymore. And I, I don't think that's of
- 5:17entertainment value to anyone. But yeah, this is going to be
- 5:21like the new background. What you see right now.
- 5:24I want to put something on the walls, but I don't want it.
- 5:27I don't want to put a lot of stuff on the wall.
- 5:30I just want to spruce it up like a little bit so that it just
- 5:33doesn't look. Maybe the light is enough.
- 5:35What do you think? So I've got the light there.
- 5:37I think the light is OK. I've got this bookshelf shelving
- 5:41unit that I'm going to clean up a little bit.
- 5:42You can see all my vitamins on there.
- 5:44That's always been my vitamins shelf, but I think maybe I
- 5:48should put my vitamin vitamins somewhere else and make that one
- 5:53shelf on that shelving unit look a little nicer.
- 5:56Not just like a bunch of pill bottles and the the fake IKEA
- 6:00bamboo thing is probably going to stay.
- 6:03But yeah, let me know. We have some ideas for like a
- 6:05light sprucing up. I don't want to hang up a whole
- 6:08bunch of really crazy looking art behind me for the background
- 6:12for the podcast, but the focus. I'm the star.
- 6:15I'm always the star, OK? Anyways, yeah, let me know.
- 6:21But yeah, I'm very excited about this.
- 6:24If you are subscribed to my Patreon and you've listened to
- 6:29the uncut episodes, you know what the announcement is,
- 6:33because I did a special uncut episode specifically about this
- 6:38thing quite a few weeks ago, back in like July or early
- 6:42August. So the Patreon listeners and
- 6:46subscribers already know, but I'm, I'm working so hard a lot
- 6:52of the days to not just launch this one thing, which I'm really
- 6:57excited to launch, but also my skin care line.
- 7:03I used to run ads for my skin care line on the podcast.
- 7:08If you'll, if you go back to like the ones earlier this year,
- 7:11you'll see their ads that were like edit it into the podcast
- 7:15episodes one day. Once we've done the relaunch,
- 7:21I've had to do a relaunch and the rebrand and all of that.
- 7:24I think maybe once we possibly, I, I'll talk more about it when
- 7:28we launch, but we're going to relaunch in November.
- 7:32We're hitting some milestones, but man, it's like 2 steps
- 7:36forward, one step back. And I, I just got an e-mail
- 7:40today from the lab that's making the skin care products like,
- 7:44hey, like the truck didn't come again to pick up the stuff to
- 7:48like deliver to Amazon. So just little things like that,
- 7:52but keeping very busy. The skin care thing is going to
- 7:55relaunch in November. Please don't quote me on that
- 8:00because I just need to stay like very flexible and very like
- 8:04taking it day by day with it. You would think, hey, this
- 8:08massive business, you must have everything planned down to the T
- 8:12Yes and no. One of the things I'm learning
- 8:14is when you're starting a business for like the first time
- 8:18or like going into an industry for the first time, you are
- 8:21learning so much. But The thing is you're going to
- 8:25make mistakes. And part of that means you kind
- 8:29of got to be really, really agile.
- 8:35You got to kind of take things one day at a time.
- 8:38You can, when you don't have that much experience, if you try
- 8:41to plan everything out, things are going to happen that derail
- 8:45you. And depending on the type of
- 8:48person you are, that could be demotivating when all these kind
- 8:54of random land mines just pop up out of nowhere when you're
- 8:57driving around this road that you plan to drive down.
- 9:01And that's something I'm learning as well is, yes, have
- 9:06plans, but just know that things are going to happen that's out
- 9:10of your control and you have to deal with it.
- 9:12And for me, when I, I do like to plan things, I live in
- 9:16spreadsheets. There's certain things though,
- 9:19that if you plan out something too much for certain things,
- 9:25you're just setting yourself up for disappointment because then
- 9:28inevitably there's certain things that are not going to go
- 9:31to plan. And even the type of person a
- 9:34little like me, where when something go doesn't go to plan
- 9:37and you're expecting it to, the little surprises pop up, then it
- 9:42gets a bit demotivating. But it just feels like things
- 9:47are going off the rails when that's not necessarily the case.
- 9:51So yeah, I have more. I'm very excited to do the skin
- 9:58care relaunch. It was a very expensive lesson
- 10:02the first time I do the launch. Anyways, the relaunch should be
- 10:05coming up in November. And one exciting thing I'm doing
- 10:09for the relaunch is we need to advertise obviously.
- 10:14And I'm working with a marketing agency for the relaunch and like
- 10:17the first go around and, you know, we're going to what I'm
- 10:21going to basically I'm going to create, you know, a bunch of
- 10:26content for the marketing effort.
- 10:27So we need photos and videos for the social media.
- 10:33We're going to need that for the website as well.
- 10:36And we're going to need it for our ads that we run on wherever
- 10:40you run ads nowadays. So I've got this idea to do a
- 10:46photo shoot and I have it in my head like what the concept, the
- 10:51visual concept is going to look like.
- 10:54So I actually yesterday posted an Instagram story just to start
- 11:01finding models for this photo shoot.
- 11:05So this is going to be the launch photo shoot campaign.
- 11:11Basically, you know, when we relaunch, this is going to be
- 11:15like the primary set of photos and videos from this particular
- 11:19shoot that I'm going to use for the launch.
- 11:22So I'm super excited about that. I've got certain people that I
- 11:28know that when I had this idea, I was like, oh, this is what I
- 11:33want that I can paint to look like the visual style and
- 11:36everything. Oh, these people would be
- 11:39perfect for that. So I posted on my Instagram
- 11:43story yesterday, like casting call type of a thing and
- 11:48actually reached out to a couple of people I know and I just told
- 11:51them, hey, I think you'd be great for this.
- 11:54Like if you're interested, let me know or if you want more
- 11:56information. So that that part's very
- 11:59exciting. Initially I thought, oh, maybe I
- 12:03can just take the photos myself in like my house, but I'm going
- 12:07to rent a studio space. Apparently that's a thing which
- 12:13for me is great. Like a proper studio space for
- 12:16like, I don't know, 50 or 100 bucks an hour.
- 12:19You can go rent a space where, you know, it's like a proper
- 12:22studio space. They've got like like a proper
- 12:24like white background and they have proper lighting and things
- 12:28like that. So that's going to be great.
- 12:31We'll get a photographer as well.
- 12:33But I'm very excited for the relaunch.
- 12:35I'm excited how it's going to turn out.
- 12:38Yeah. And in addition to this new
- 12:40thing that I'm going to launch, I'm going to have to stop
- 12:42talking around it because it's so annoying when someone keeps
- 12:47talking about something they're going to announce and they don't
- 12:50announce it, Right. So OK, I'll put a pin on that.
- 12:55But yeah, I'm just so swamped and busy these days.
- 13:00This is the first time in my life that I've ever wanted to
- 13:05cut back on gym time. I've never ever wanted to cut
- 13:12back on gym time before in my life.
- 13:17Oh, I tell you guys some tea. I mean, I haven't worked there
- 13:20in ages, so it doesn't matter. Back when, back in like my
- 13:24final, like one or one or two years at Google, I used to leave
- 13:34the office early to go to the gym.
- 13:37Not like, it's not like I, I, I leave at lunch.
- 13:39Well, like, because when you go to the gym at 5:00-ish, how most
- 13:48people would go right after they leave the office.
- 13:52You know, you might leave the office at like 4 or five.
- 13:55And when you go to the gym and at that rush hour time, it's
- 14:00rush hour literally so, and it doesn't let up until 8:30 or 9.
- 14:08Back when I used to live in San Francisco, like many, many, many
- 14:11years ago, I would used to go to the gym at like 8:30 or like 830
- 14:19ish, something like that. Because I didn't want to go
- 14:22during rush hour. I didn't want to have to wait
- 14:25around for equipment and have it just be super busy at the gym.
- 14:29And I was working. I was still working like that
- 14:32was before I started leaving the leaving the office early, like
- 14:36my final one or so years. I'm not, I didn't do it every
- 14:39single day, but there'd be like a couple of days of the week
- 14:43where, you know, I knew that like it was fine.
- 14:47And I still had on my phone. So if someone needed to like
- 14:49reach me, like they can still reach me.
- 14:50I had my phone. But like, yeah, I would leave
- 14:52the office at like 2:30 or three.
- 14:57I didn't, I didn't show. I, I, I came to work at like
- 14:598:30, which is like, I don't, that's a standard ish time.
- 15:03So it's not like I was leaving at 12.
- 15:05It's not like I was just doing the half day and it wasn't every
- 15:07day of the week, but they were like pretty regularly, like a
- 15:11couple of times a week. I would if I could, I will leave
- 15:16at like 2:30 or three and then I could get to the gym at like I
- 15:21think I just went direct. I just went directly from the
- 15:24office to the gym. So I get a gym at like 3330 and
- 15:27it was nice because I can get my full workout in before rush hour
- 15:31and then I have like the rest of the rest of the night to like
- 15:34just be home to like do whatever.
- 15:37So I do have a history of cutting, cutting work slash
- 15:42school. I remember in high school we
- 15:45would, well, I slashed some of my friends in this was junior
- 15:51high or Senior High there we knew there were certain courses
- 15:55where we could just not show up because of like the teacher and
- 15:59how LAX they were and like the type of class it was we had some
- 16:04of us had drafting class, you know, drafting us in like
- 16:07technical drawing of things. So it was an elective and some
- 16:12of us took drafting and the teacher was really LAX.
- 16:15He was super cool guy. He knew what was doing, but
- 16:18like, he was very like chill and mellow.
- 16:21And the drafting was for us, it was like very easy to do, you
- 16:26know, for like the average high school student, I'm totally just
- 16:29reading people now. For the average high school
- 16:31student, it was whatever. But like me and a couple of my
- 16:33friends were more like technically minded.
- 16:35Like for me, it was like very easy to just like blast through
- 16:38the work to the point that we didn't really need to be there
- 16:41every single day that we were scheduled to be in that class.
- 16:44And I think there were like one or two semesters where drafting
- 16:49was the class before the lunch break, and we would often just
- 16:56cut that class. I remember my friends and I in
- 16:58junior high, before any of us had cars, sometimes we just take
- 17:02the bus up to 1 of like the malls, like one of the local
- 17:07malls. You know, this is like years ago
- 17:09when going to malls were like the cool thing for kids to do,
- 17:12like high school kids. So we cut class.
- 17:14The things we would cut class not to even do anything
- 17:17specific. We would just like go to the
- 17:18mall and just hang out and have like a leisurely lunch.
- 17:22I remember on Tuesdays we would cut that class that was right
- 17:27before lunch and it was Toony Tuesday at KFC.
- 17:35So this is up in Canada. OK, In Canada they had they do
- 17:40still they have $1.00 coins and $2.00 coins.
- 17:45In the US you only get coins for anything that's less than a
- 17:48dollar, like 1/4 a dime, a nickel or penny.
- 17:51But in Canada, you don't get bills until you hit $5.
- 17:56OK, yeah, $5.00 bill, $10.00 bill, whatever.
- 17:58But for $1.00 and $2.00, you got coins.
- 18:02A $1.00 coin is called a loony, and they've had the loony for
- 18:06quite a while. The $2.00 coin is called the
- 18:09toony. And that came out that's was
- 18:11like relatively new. It came in like, I think they
- 18:14introduced in like the 90s. So you had like $1.00 coin and
- 18:17$2.00 coin. And on Tuesdays we would go to
- 18:22this, the food court that was at the mall and they had AKFC at
- 18:27the food court and KFC. It would be 20 Tuesdays at KFC
- 18:34and it was like $2.00 for like a, a two piece and like a
- 18:39coleslaw or fries. It was that's some sort of like
- 18:42$2.00 deal. Obviously for $2.00 to get you
- 18:45any amount of chicken these days it's impossible.
- 18:48But like way, way back when I was in high school, we would cut
- 18:51class, we would go, it'd be too many.
- 18:53Tuesday, it'd be like a two piece and some fries, like a
- 18:56little bit of coleslaw, something like that.
- 18:58I would always get the honey mustard dip for the fries
- 19:02instead of the ketchup. It was just like, I just
- 19:04preferred it. That was like the thing we look
- 19:06forward to on on Tuesdays and times when we sometimes we just
- 19:11had regular lunch. We didn't skip class and we
- 19:14would walk over to, I don't know, there's there's a, there's
- 19:19like an area that was like a 1015 minute walk away from
- 19:23school and there's a 711 there, 711 like right on the corner.
- 19:29And we would get slushies. My friends would get the proper
- 19:34size slushies with like the Dome cap.
- 19:36I would get the small slushy like the the small cup, like
- 19:41this yellow small cup with like the flat lid.
- 19:43Just up the road from the 711, there was a pizza place.
- 19:48I got like a little mom and pop pizza place.
- 19:50I forgot, I don't remember what the name is, but it was like
- 19:52literally just like four or five storefronts up from that 711 on
- 19:59this like Major Rd. there's this mom and pop pizza place and it
- 20:04was the greasiest pizza you could ever imagine.
- 20:09And they sold pizza by the slice.
- 20:11It was like this massive slice. It would be like drenched in
- 20:15oil. But it was delicious.
- 20:18I can still, if I close my eyes, I can still imagine what that
- 20:22pizza tasted like. Yeah.
- 20:25So when I was in high school, that's, that's what we did.
- 20:27We cut class and we went to 711, had slushies and sometimes we
- 20:32went to that super greasy pizza place.
- 20:36I think because the, the, the mom and pop like the, the couple
- 20:41that ran that place, they weren't like a super old couple,
- 20:44at least not like back then when we were there, they weren't like
- 20:47a super old couple. I wonder if they were actually
- 20:49Italian. They definitely had like some
- 20:50sort of European accent and they recognized us because we went
- 20:53there probably like once or twice a week, once or twice a
- 20:57week during high school. That was before we had cars.
- 21:01And then I remember Senior High, like over the summer when we
- 21:06started Senior High, a couple of us had gotten cars over the
- 21:10summer and I was one of them. And obviously instead of taking
- 21:15the bus, we'd be we'd be driving.
- 21:17We still kind of classified like drive to the mall, still be
- 21:21doing the Toony Tuesdays and whatever.
- 21:23We never did anything. I don't know.
- 21:26We didn't cut class for any good reason.
- 21:28We cut class because we didn't even hate class.
- 21:34Like I didn't hate drafting was fine.
- 21:36I was fine to just, like, chill in front of the computer and
- 21:38like, use the cat software and be drawing stuff.
- 21:40It was easy for me. I think I just did it because,
- 21:43like, the other kids are doing it, you know, like when you're
- 21:45in high school, like, you just do what other kids do just to
- 21:49be, like, cool and fit in, even though that's not the, you don't
- 21:55know really explicitly at the front of your mind why you're
- 21:58doing it. But like, oh, like, you know,
- 21:59like so and so are doing it. Like my friends are doing it.
- 22:01So I just tagged along. And I was doing it too.
- 22:05Yeah. I don't know how we got from
- 22:07podcasting to eating super greasy pizza and slushies during
- 22:13my high school years, but yeah, I, I love telling stories from
- 22:16my past because I think a lot of you guys, sometimes you guys
- 22:19give me good feedback about like, oh, it's interesting to
- 22:21hear what your time was like when you were in school or in
- 22:26college or like early on in your career.
- 22:29And like this I feel like a lot of people can kind of identify
- 22:32with. Oh, yeah, when I was high
- 22:33school, I did this and I did that.
- 22:34High school was easy for me, but like high school was too easy
- 22:39academically for me, I think because I didn't know what it
- 22:43was like to really do hard academic work until I went to
- 22:48university and I almost, almost flunked the first year of
- 22:53college. I was so close to flunking this
- 22:55one course that I had to pass, I think.
- 22:58I think I've mentioned it. Well basically it was math one O
- 23:032 which is integral calculus and I took calculus.
- 23:06I took pre calc in high school but like the teacher made it too
- 23:10easy. OK, you know, you know what the
- 23:12stupid thing is? I apparently learned algebra in
- 23:16high school like kids learned algebra high school.
- 23:18That's not like a University College thing.
- 23:21I knew I learned algebra in high school.
- 23:23Somehow it completely left my like all my algebra left my
- 23:28brain between high school and college.
- 23:31When I got to college, they just assumed you knew algebra because
- 23:34that's the high school thing to learn.
- 23:35And I was I was in, I was in first year engineering.
- 23:40It wasn't like I was in first year Fine Arts.
- 23:43I was in engineering school, school of applied science and I
- 23:48forgot to how to do algebra completely.
- 23:51I didn't even know what to Oh my God, it was so it's so
- 23:54embarrassing. It's so embarrassing.
- 23:56I remember math one O 1, which was differential calculus and we
- 24:00had that in the first semester of the first year.
- 24:03And that was like, OK, but like when I was doing that, of course
- 24:07I was like, Oh my God, I don't know how to do this algebra.
- 24:10This isn't even calculated yet. It's just the algebra part.
- 24:12I have like completely forgotten how to do it.
- 24:15I don't know how, but I can forgot.
- 24:16So I'll have to like relearn it somehow.
- 24:19And then yeah, math one O 2 in the second semester, the
- 24:22integrals that completely shafted me completely
- 24:26comprehensively. And that was when I like really
- 24:30super started to like take it really seriously and buckle.
- 24:33Not that I wasn't taking it seriously, but I think I was
- 24:36like a little too much like happy go lucky mode going into
- 24:41college. It just felt like, Oh yeah, I
- 24:43was always getting like A's and maybe some B's in like high
- 24:46school, like I aced my final year of like math, of chemistry,
- 24:52of physics. I did precalculus, like, you
- 24:54know, I should be like, I think I'm pretty good.
- 24:56And then I went to college. It was like, Hell's no.
- 25:00Like I felt like I was, it was not cutting it.
- 25:04So I don't think I was, I don't think I was very well prepared.
- 25:10And I can't even blame school because there were other people
- 25:12from my school. There were a couple people from
- 25:14my school that also went to first year engineering in UBC at
- 25:20the same time as me and they knew what they were doing.
- 25:24We went to the same high school and we took the same math and
- 25:26science courses for years. And they go into first year
- 25:34engineering at the same school as me at the same time.
- 25:36And we're all taking the exact same, some of them that were my
- 25:38classmates in first year engineering, like, and that's
- 25:41how I knew them. Like, you know, like, Oh yeah,
- 25:43like we went to the same high school blah, blah.
- 25:45And it was me that was like, Oh my God, I don't even know how to
- 25:47do algebra, how bad that is. Anyways, for more embarrassing
- 25:53stories for my high school and college years, I I feel I spent
- 25:57six years doing college and two of those years were internships
- 26:02or they call them co-ops at UBC. So it was like the four year
- 26:06undergrad and then instead of I didn't really have summer break,
- 26:09I just did internships, but I did 2 years worth of
- 26:12internships. So in total I, I did six years
- 26:15between. It took six years to do my
- 26:16degree. But like I voluntarily
- 26:19essentially wanted to like do as many internships as possible.
- 26:23But yeah, there are quite a few. There are quite a few stories
- 26:29from my college days that I should start metering them out
- 26:33on the podcast. They weren't super wild.
- 26:36They were not super wild stories.
- 26:37I was not a super wild kid in college.
- 26:41But it's like basically that first year after the calculus
- 26:45nearly flunking first year engineering debacle, I really
- 26:50like clamped down and I studied like really hard, but the math
- 26:55only got more and more intense. Do you know what?
- 26:58Like, do you know what laner algebra is?
- 27:01It's fucking bullshit, OK. All this like advanced math,
- 27:05it's like calculate the volume of this like really shaped cone.
- 27:13Eventually I learned that engineering, being a
- 27:17professional engineer was not going to be my thing.
- 27:22But yeah, yeah, I've some, I've got some like stories here and
- 27:26there. I definitely had AI definitely
- 27:28had some crushes. Oh, I, I, I need to, I need to
- 27:33tell you guys about Alvin. This is like a really big crush
- 27:37I had. Unfortunately, we're out of time
- 27:39today. We're out of time today.
- 27:42It's there's no time limit for this podcast.
- 27:44But when I say time's up on the podcast and the time time is up
- 27:47on this podcast, I should probably save the Alvin story
- 27:50for uncut episodes on my Patreon, which you can all
- 27:55subscribe to it. Would you love to help me?
- 27:57You know what you all should help me with you know this this
