- 0:48Kick ass daily. Hey there, Picas Daily is back
- 0:53and today we're diving deep covering everything from
- 0:56record-breaking athletes to incredible science, amazing
- 1:00animals and beyond. We're focusing on 2 famous baton
- 1:04ball sports that many kids play or watch with their families,
- 1:08baseball and cricket. You will hear clear explanations
- 1:12of the words players and coaches use on the field, plus some fun
- 1:16facts you can share at school or at practice.
- 1:19So let's get on with today's episode.
- 1:32Let's start with how each game is set.
- 1:34U In baseball, the field is a diamond shape with four bases,
- 1:39first, second, third and home plate.
- 1:43A-Team gets to bat while the other team fields.
- 1:46The goal is to hit the ball and run around the bases to score a
- 1:50run by touching home plate. There are nine players in the
- 1:53field, including the pitcher and the catcher.
- 1:57In cricket, the action happens on a large Oval field with a
- 2:00rectangular area in the middle called the pitch.
- 2:04At each end of the pitch is a wicket made of three wooden
- 2:07stumps and two small pieces on top called bales. 2 batters are
- 2:12on the field for the batting team and one bowler delivers the
- 2:15ball to the batter. Baseball terms you will hear a
- 2:18lot include pitch, strike and ball.
- 2:21A strike happens when the pitcher throws the ball through
- 2:24the strike zone and the batter does not hit it, or when the
- 2:28batter swings and misses. A ball is a pitch outside the
- 2:32strike zone that the batter does not swing at. 4 balls equals a
- 2:36walk and the batter gets to go to first base.
- 2:39If the batter hits the ball into fair territory and it touches
- 2:43the ground, it's usually a hit. A single means the batter
- 2:47reaches first, a double means second, and a triple means
- 2:51third. A home run sends the batter and
- 2:54any runners all the way home to score.
- 2:57Cricket has its own set of terms.
- 3:00The bowler delivers the ball by running up and bowling with a
- 3:03straight arm. The batter, called the striker,
- 3:06tries to protect the wicket and score runs by hitting the ball
- 3:10and running to the other end of the pitch.
- 3:12If the ball reaches the boundary along the ground, it's four
- 3:16runs. If it goes over the boundary
- 3:18without bouncing, it's six runs. The line near the stumps is the
- 3:22crease, and the batter must keep part of the bat or body behind
- 3:26it to avoid being out in certain situations.
- 3:29Let's cover outs in baseball. The fielding team tries to get 3
- 3:34outs to end the half inning. A batter is out if a fielder
- 3:38catches the ball in the air, if the ball beats the runner to a
- 3:41base on a force play, or if the runner is tagged with the ball
- 3:45while not on a base. You may also hear double play,
- 3:48which means getting 2 outs on the same continuous play, often
- 3:52when ground balls are hit quickly to infielders.
- 3:55Did you know many infielders practice short fast throws every
- 3:59day just to turn double plays smoothly?
- 4:01In cricket, getting a batter out is called taking a wicket.
- 4:05A batter can be bowled if the ball hits the stumps and
- 4:08dislodges the bales, caught if a fielder catches the ball before
- 4:12it hits the ground. Run out if the fielders break
- 4:15the wicket before the running batter crosses the crease, or
- 4:18out LBW, which stands for leg before wicket, if the ball would
- 4:23have hit the stumps but is blocked by the batter's leg.
- 4:26In certain conditions, umpires use signals with their hands to
- 4:30show what happened, like raising a finger for out or stretching
- 4:34both arms to the side for a boundary.
- 4:36Here's a trivia question. How many stitches are on a
- 4:40standard Major League Baseball? The answer is 108 stitches,
- 4:48which help give the ball grip and movement when it spins
- 4:51through the air. Now back to hitting and
- 4:58placement. In baseball, you might hear the
- 5:01words fair and foul. If a hit lands or rolls inside
- 5:05the two chalk lines that start at home plate and run past first
- 5:09and third base, it's fair. If it lands outside those lines,
- 5:13it's foul. Foul balls count as strikes
- 5:16until the batter has two strikes, and after that they
- 5:19usually just count as fouls. And the at back continues.
- 5:23Did you know some hitters keep detailed notes on which pitches
- 5:26they see the most from each pitcher so they can prepare for
- 5:29the next game. In cricket, players talk about
- 5:32timing and placement. A straight drive goes back
- 5:36toward the bowler. Shots toward the offside go to
- 5:39the side of the pitch, where the batter faces the bowler's arm
- 5:42and leg. Side or on side is the opposite.
- 5:46Fielders stand in named spots such as slip, gully, mid off,
- 5:51mid on cover and square leg. Captains move fielders around to
- 5:56block strong shots and to create catching chances.
- 6:00Baseball also has positions with special jobs.
- 6:03The catcher wears protective gear and signals pitch choices.
- 6:07Infielders guard the bases and stop ground balls.
- 6:11Outfielders chase fly balls. The bullpen is the area where
- 6:15relief pitchers warm up to enter the game later.
- 6:18A pinch hitter is a substitute batter used for a strategic
- 6:22matchup. Did you know most professional
- 6:25catchers practice popping up from a Crouch and throwing to
- 6:28second base in under 2 seconds? Cricket bowling has many styles.
- 6:33Fast bowlers rely on speed and sea movement.
- 6:37Spin bowlers turn the ball off the pitch using finger spin or
- 6:41wrist spin, trying to trick the batter.
- 6:43A Yorker is a fast delivery that lands near the batters feet at
- 6:47the base of the stumps, making it hard to hit.
- 6:50A slower ball is delivered with less speed to upset the batter's
- 6:54timing. Captains choose bowling orders
- 6:57to keep batters guessing and to take wickets regularly.
- 7:01Here's a yes or no question. Can a cricket batter score runs
- 7:05without hitting the ball? Yes, If the ball passes the
- 7:12batter and the wicket keeper misses it, the batters can run
- 7:15and those are called buys. If the ball hits the batter's
- 7:19body but not the bat and they run, those are called leg buys.
- 7:23Allowed under certain rules. Scoring and timing work
- 7:32differently in the two sports. In baseball, games are divided
- 7:36into 9 innings, and each inning has a top and bottom half.
- 7:41The away team bats first. If the score is tied after 9
- 7:45innings, the game goes to extra innings.
- 7:48Did you know some professional games last more than four hours
- 7:52when extra innings add up? In cricket, teams have turns
- 7:55called innings too, but formats differ.
- 7:59Test matches can last up to five days with two innings per team,
- 8:03while limited overs matches give each team a fixed number of
- 8:07overs. An over is a set of deliveries
- 8:09by one bowler from one end of the pitch and then another
- 8:13bowler takes over from the other end during power play overs.
- 8:17In many limited overs games, only a certain number of
- 8:20fielders may stand outside the inner circle, which encourages
- 8:24more attacking shots. Here's a trivia question.
- 8:28How many legal balls are in a single over in most modern
- 8:32cricket formats, six legal balls.
- 8:38If a delivery is a no ball or wide, it is not count and the
- 8:43bowler must deliver an extra ball.
- 8:45Plus the batting team gets a run.
- 8:47Batting statistics help tell stories about performance in
- 8:51baseball. Batting average shows how often
- 8:54a player gets a hit while on base.
- 8:56Percentage includes walks and hit by pitches.
- 9:00RBIs or runs batted in measure how often a hitter helps
- 9:04teammates score. Pitchers have stats too, such as
- 9:08ERA, the average number of earned runs they allow per 9
- 9:11innings. In cricket, a batter's average
- 9:14is total runs divided by times out, and a strike rate shows
- 9:18runs scored per 100 balls. Bowlers track economy rate for
- 9:23runs allowed per over and bowling average for runs allowed
- 9:26per wicket taken. Here's a yes or no question.
- 9:30In baseball, are players allowed to steal home plate?
- 9:36Yes, it is rare and risky, but a runner on third base can try to
- 9:41dash home while the pitcher is delivering the ball.
- 9:49Equipment details are fascinating.
- 9:52Did you know cricket bats are usually made from Willow wood
- 9:55selected for strength and spring?
- 9:57Did you know why cricket balls are used in many day night
- 10:00matches? Because they are easier to see
- 10:02under lights. Did you know baseball park
- 10:05outfield distances are not all the same, So a deep fly ball
- 10:08might be a home run in one park but caught near the wall in
- 10:11another. Here's a trivia question.
- 10:14What is the official distance from the pitcher's mound to home
- 10:17plate in Major League Baseball? 60 feet, 6 inches.
- 10:24That distance challenges hitters while giving pitchers room to
- 10:28control the ball. Here's a yes or no question in
- 10:32cricket. Can a bowler use either arm if
- 10:34they tell the umpire and the batter before the delivery?
- 10:40Yes, Bowlers must inform the umpire of their arm and the side
- 10:45of the wicket they will bowl from so the batter can be ready.
- 10:49Before we wrap up, let's connect what you learned.
- 10:52Both sports use a bat and a ball and aim to score runs.
- 10:57Baseball uses bases and fixed innings, while cricket uses
- 11:01wickets and overs with different match formats.
- 11:04Important baseball terms include strike, ball, walk, fair, foul,
- 11:09single, double, triple, home run, RBI, double, play, catcher,
- 11:15bullpen and pinch hitter. Important cricket terms include
- 11:19pitch, wicket, stumps, bales, crease, striker, bowler, over
- 11:25boundary, 46 Yorker, run out, LBW and power play.
- 11:30You also learned extra facts from our questions, like the
- 11:33number of stitches on a baseball, that batters can score
- 11:37bys and leg bys without hitting the ball, that an over has 6
- 11:41legal balls, that stealing home is allowed, and that the mound
- 11:44to plate distance is 60 feet 6 inches.
- 11:53That's it for today's lesson on baseball and cricket terms.
- 11:57Keep listening, keep asking smart questions, and the next
- 12:00time you watch a game or step onto a field you will know
- 12:04exactly what the players, coaches and commentators are
- 12:07talking about. Thanks for joining Kick Cast
