- 0:01Speaker 1: The Hodaki Big Show with Jase, Mike and Keezy. Tune
- 0:04Speaker 1: in weekdays at 4 on Radio Hodaki.
- 0:07Speaker 2: It is the Hodaki Big Show, more so the medium show.
- 0:10Speaker 2: You've got old Mogi and Pugs filling in while Jase
- 0:13Speaker 2: and Hoyt and Keezy are slacking off on holiday. But
- 0:16Speaker 2: we're getting the guests in. We're filling the empty air,
- 0:18Speaker 2: aren't we, Mogi?
- 0:19Speaker 3: We are.
- 0:19Speaker 2: With an absolute treasure. We are very lucky to be
- 0:22Speaker 2: joined by a special guest.
- 0:24Speaker 4: Wilson Dixon, mate. How are you?
- 0:26Speaker 3: I'm good, thanks. That's great, man.
- 0:27Speaker 4: That's really good. You spend a lot of time in
- 0:29Speaker 4: this country, New Zealand, India.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:33Speaker 4: Just wondering what the thinking is there, because obviously I'm
- 0:35Speaker 4: assuming you've got a bit of popularity around the world,
- 0:38Speaker 4: and yet you find yourself back on our shores, seems
- 0:41Speaker 4: like every couple of months. Why is that? No, no,
- 0:45Speaker 4: I'm just interested, because obviously it's a long way from home.
- 0:48Speaker 3: I've got a cousin that lives in Dunedin. Right. Dunedin.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Is it Dunedin?
- 0:55Speaker 4: Yeah, there.
- 0:56Speaker 3: And he... He needs help. He's recovering. Well, he's eaten
- 1:04Speaker 3: a lot of food over his life, I guess, and
- 1:06Speaker 3: he's recovering. He's, like, trying to thin down. Yeah, right.
- 1:09Speaker 3: He goes for walks in the hills down there. The air,
- 1:12Speaker 3: you know, makes him feel better about himself because of
- 1:16Speaker 3: very low self-esteem. Have you ever been obese in your
- 1:19Speaker 3: life at all during any of it?
- 1:21Speaker 4: No, I was raised by, yeah, Pugs, that's a yes.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Really?
- 1:24Speaker 4: That is a yes for me. That's a hard yes.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:27Speaker 2: But I wish I had a musician cousin to be
- 1:30Speaker 2: over here helping me.
- 1:31Speaker 4: For me, I was raised by a mother who was
- 1:36Speaker 4: heavily into fat shaming.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Oh.
- 1:39Speaker 4: And so any time there's any kind of extra pounds
- 1:44Speaker 4: being put around on the middle for me, I'm sickened
- 1:46Speaker 4: by myself.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Oh, really?
- 1:47Speaker 4: You've got your mother's voice in your ear. That's been
- 1:50Speaker 4: ingrained in me since a very early age. Probably the
- 1:54Speaker 4: nicest thing she's ever done for me.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Oh.
- 1:56Speaker 4: Just saying something.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Well, it's that kind of tough love, isn't it? Yeah.
- 2:00Speaker 4: I wouldn't have said it was love. It was just tough.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Tough, yeah. Is she still like that? She's still kind of, yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 4: You think you expect that, I don't know about you,
- 2:15Speaker 4: but you expect when they get to a certain age
- 2:17Speaker 4: that they soften.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:19Speaker 4: That's a rumor that one day they're going to sort
- 2:21Speaker 4: of look back and think, oh, I've made a meal
- 2:25Speaker 4: of that.
- 2:25Speaker 3: My daddy's like that too. He's tough, man.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Yeah, he hasn't softened?
- 2:29Speaker 3: No, no, even like the first ever gig I did,
- 2:31Speaker 3: I remember it was at home, you know.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:35Speaker 3: And I got, you know, it was just the family around.
- 2:39Speaker 3: And I have to say, you know, the bottle thrown
- 2:41Speaker 3: from the back of the crowd was a bit of
- 2:43Speaker 3: a surprise, and it was him.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Yes. But they can be your toughest critic.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, and most, you know, like.
- 2:49Speaker 4: Most violent critic.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Hit me on the head and shattered on the ground.
- 2:52Speaker 3: One of the dogs got cut.
- 2:54Speaker 5: Oh.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Well, there were a couple of dogs there because they'd
- 2:57Speaker 3: shown an interest in music as well, you know.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Indoors at the crowd.
- 3:00Speaker 3: No, it was just out the back. It was just
- 3:01Speaker 3: on the porch out the back of where I grew up,
- 3:04Speaker 3: you know, the house.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Did he not like you sort of drawing the attention
- 3:08Speaker 4: away from him? Was he one of those blokes?
- 3:10Speaker 3: Oh, no, he just didn't. I guess he was.
- 3:13Speaker 4: He's just got a good taste of music.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Yeah, he just likes good music and I was terrible.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Fellas, speaking of crowds, if I could just redirect, you're
- 3:20Speaker 2: back on tour.
- 3:21Speaker 3: I am on tour, yeah.
- 3:22Speaker 2: This is the Cabin Fever Comedy Tour with Paul Douglas. Now,
- 3:26Speaker 2: how did you find, how did you discover Paul Douglas?
- 3:29Speaker 2: Is it just one of those since you've been here,
- 3:30Speaker 2: you found him?
- 3:31Speaker 3: Well, he was a dude that was just kind of
- 3:34Speaker 3: around and about, and he's got a car.
- 3:36Speaker 4: He does.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:37Speaker 4: You can say what you like about Paul Douglas.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:39Speaker 4: He's got a car.
- 3:40Speaker 3: He's got a car. I've always liked that about him.
- 3:43Speaker 3: And that's 90% of it, to be honest.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Now, I went and saw your recent gig down here
- 3:50Speaker 4: in Auckland on Queen Street.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:52Speaker 4: At the Classic. Uh-huh. Have we taken that same show
- 3:57Speaker 4: around with you, William?
- 3:58Speaker 3: Word for word.
- 3:59Speaker 4: Right.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Yeah. The same crowd, so all of the heckling's the same,
- 4:04Speaker 3: and the interaction and the response. So it's just the
- 4:07Speaker 3: same group of people.
- 4:08Speaker 2: What do you think it is, Wilson, about being from Colorado?
- 4:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:14Speaker 2: The American of it all that really resonates with New
- 4:16Speaker 2: Zealand audiences. Did that surprise you?
- 4:20Speaker 3: Well, I think like anything, I think you guys are
- 4:23Speaker 3: grateful for anyone that comes from overseas to come here.
- 4:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:26Speaker 3: You know, to share their, you know, their creativity.
- 4:29Speaker 4: You've come all this way.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. So, yeah, may as well.
- 4:32Speaker 2: So we'll show out.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Yeah. And it is a long way, you know, as
- 4:36Speaker 3: we know. It is. The furthest you can go on
- 4:38Speaker 3: the earth without leaving the planet.
- 4:40Speaker 4: That's right. That's right.
- 4:42Speaker 3: That's a fact.
- 4:43Speaker 4: So.
- 4:44Speaker 2: So it's more of a favour. Yeah.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Yeah, to keep us everywhere.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yeah, fantastic. It's kind of like a make-a-wish kind of
- 4:50Speaker 3: situation for the whole country.
- 4:52Speaker 4: I am surprised that you're so close to your cousin.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Yeah, me too.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Are you?
- 4:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Well, people aren't generally that close to their cousins. They're
- 4:59Speaker 4: not enough to travel to, as you say, a country
- 5:02Speaker 4: that's further away than anywhere else. Yeah. Three, four times
- 5:06Speaker 4: a year you're coming down here.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Well, I say he's my cousin. He's the brother of
- 5:10Speaker 3: my ex-wife.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Right, okay. To be honest, most of the relationship is around,
- 5:17Speaker 3: I mean, I still want to get to her, you
- 5:20Speaker 3: know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. I want to get
- 5:21Speaker 3: in her head, and it feels like, I don't know
- 5:24Speaker 3: if any divorce people out there, but it doesn't end
- 5:27Speaker 3: when you sign the divorce papers.
- 5:29Speaker 4: No, that's right.
- 5:29Speaker 3: It keeps on going, and you want to keep winning.
- 5:31Speaker 4: And that's the thing, I think. Oftentimes people, and we've
- 5:35Speaker 4: talked about this before at length, But oftentimes people look
- 5:39Speaker 4: at marriage as something to be shared, you know, something
- 5:45Speaker 4: that two people can come together and elevate a relationship
- 5:48Speaker 4: and create something bigger, whereas I've always seen it as
- 5:51Speaker 4: an opportunity to win arguments or upper hands, all that
- 5:57Speaker 4: sort of stuff. And I've always been a competitive person,
- 6:01Speaker 4: so having somebody in the house that I can hopefully dominate,
- 6:05Speaker 4: you know, that's the– That's the dream. That is the dream.
- 6:08Speaker 4: And so when they divorce you.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. It's not fair.
- 6:12Speaker 4: It's not fair. It can hurt.
- 6:15Speaker 3: It can hurt. Yeah. And so you've got to try
- 6:17Speaker 3: to keep that hatred going. That's so....
- 6:22Speaker 2: But, Wilson, if I could just... We are here to
- 6:25Speaker 2: talk about the Wilson Dixon and Paul Douglas Cabin Fever
- 6:28Speaker 2: Comedy Tour.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right.

- 6:39Speaker 3: That's right.
- 6:41Speaker 5: Oh, g'day, Matt.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Oh, hi, mate, yeah.

- 7:22Speaker 3: which is off my fourth album, Wilson Dixon Live. It's
- 7:28Speaker 3: called What's Worse. What's worse than getting your private parts
- 7:33Speaker 3: caught in a zipper when that zipper's in someone else's pants?
- 7:42Speaker 3: What's worse than finding a hair in a bowl of
- 7:45Speaker 3: soup when it's a pubic hair and you're having lunch
- 7:50Speaker 3: at your grandma's? What's worse than dying of boredom Living
- 8:00Speaker 3: in Canada What's worse than What's worse than Grating off
- 8:12Speaker 3: a bit of skin When you're grating cheese Not finding
- 8:17Speaker 3: the skin What's worse than Getting stuck in an elevator
- 8:24Speaker 3: With a stranger Discovering they're blind But it's too late
- 8:30Speaker 3: to let them know you're there.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Well, Sid Dixon, thank you so much.
- 8:42Speaker 4: Thank you. That was called What's Worse.
