Speaker 1: All right, and welcome inside One Leg Up alex Media.
0:03
Speaker 1: It's one of my favorite months. It's the month of March.
0:05
Speaker 1: Let's celebrate with some Irish music. Welcome aboard to this
0:09
Speaker 1: edition on One Leg Up alex Media. All Right, Well,
0:19
Speaker 1: one of my hockey connoisseurs who just loves the game
0:23
Speaker 1: and talks about it with me frequently is lou Terminello
0:26
Speaker 1: and Urmandello's take, I want to start here. I've got
0:30
Speaker 1: two days in July and relations to trade Aatlana. Tell
0:35
Speaker 1: you why that I'm looking to go to Chicago for
0:38
Speaker 1: turns out learn today the Yankees are playing the White
0:41
Speaker 1: Sox and the Cubs back to back. I would love
0:44
Speaker 1: to be there for that, and so I'm manifesting that
0:47
Speaker 1: through One Leg Up alex Media. Let's get me out
0:49
Speaker 1: to Chicago, maybe my sojourn since my dad passed, because
0:52
Speaker 1: he was a big Cubs guy. And I'm like, what
0:54
Speaker 1: a perfect way to honor him by going to those
0:56
Speaker 1: two days. But you know it won't be there Nick Felino,
1:00
Speaker 1: and I'm I'm kind of sad because Fellino was the
1:03
Speaker 1: captain of the Blackhawks. From what I can follow, he
1:05
Speaker 1: was sort of a heart and soul of that team.
1:07
Speaker 1: But they say they did him in a solid by
1:10
Speaker 1: training him to the Wild. Why is that just gonna
1:12
Speaker 1: be him a better chance to win that you think?
1:14
Speaker 2: Or well, his brother, his brother plays on the Minnesota Wild,
1:18
Speaker 2: and I think he had kind of asked, you know,
1:21
Speaker 2: that would be nice. The Blackhawks are getting some kind
1:26
Speaker 2: of lower level future considerations. I just saw Felina interviewed.
1:30
Speaker 2: He was very, very complimentary of the Blackhawks.
1:36
Speaker 3: Management for that.
1:37
Speaker 1: You know, the history. I'm sure they don't put they
1:39
Speaker 1: don't put the sea on your jersey on everybody there,
1:42
Speaker 1: you know what I mean?
1:43
Speaker 2: So sure, And as we said many times, the captain
1:47
Speaker 2: c in hockey is different than any other sport. It
1:50
Speaker 2: means something in hockey, it does.
1:54
Speaker 1: Absolutely And so uh, that's where I want to begin.
1:58
Speaker 1: It is you know, Fellino was there for a lot,
2:00
Speaker 1: it felt like for a long time anyway, and now
2:02
Speaker 1: he's traded. Now, my dad's team was a Blackhawks, So
2:06
Speaker 1: it's kind of fitting when we start there. What are
2:08
Speaker 1: they gonna do there? Because I want to see them
2:10
Speaker 1: build around Connor. It just seems like maybe they're gonna
2:12
Speaker 1: build take it apart them build around him? Is that
2:14
Speaker 1: what we're seeing.
2:15
Speaker 2: No, they're not gonna take it part. Now, they're gonna
2:19
Speaker 2: be They're gonna be in the draft lotter YAGUEA. And
2:22
Speaker 2: you want to get into the top five or top seven.
2:24
Speaker 2: It's not like the NBA or the NFL. He gotta
2:28
Speaker 2: be in that top you know, that top five, six
2:30
Speaker 2: or seven to get an instant impact. Not saying you
2:33
Speaker 2: can't draft a franchise player at twenty in the NHL draft,
2:37
Speaker 2: but no, the black Hawks are looking to continue to
2:40
Speaker 2: build around around their core next year. I'm sure Connor
2:43
Speaker 2: per Dog is going to want to be in the
2:44
Speaker 2: playoffs after missing it his first you know, three years
2:47
Speaker 2: of his career.
2:49
Speaker 1: Amazing, three years gone by already, and this is it's crazy,
2:53
Speaker 1: but you know, and he had a he had an okay, sir,
2:56
Speaker 1: I felt like he didn't start as healthy or as
2:58
Speaker 1: match Shaeffer did his first season, but you know, it's
3:01
Speaker 1: it's what it is. Both guys are stellar players though,
3:04
Speaker 1: and and certainly in great draft picks.
3:07
Speaker 3: Absolutely, you talk about Matthew Shaffer.
3:10
Speaker 2: We talk about him almost every week on this show, Alex,
3:16
Speaker 2: Matthew Shaeffer, He's totally transforming the Islanders at eighteen and
3:20
Speaker 2: a half.
3:21
Speaker 3: He's gonna win the.
3:22
Speaker 2: Call the Trophy. Uh, he should win it unanimously. I
3:26
Speaker 2: believe he's a Norris Trope, legitimate Norris Trophy candidate as
3:30
Speaker 2: best defenseman and Alex He's also should be he should
3:35
Speaker 2: be getting MVP votes for the Hart Trophy. That's the
3:38
Speaker 2: kind of impact this kid has had. So, I mean,
3:41
Speaker 2: the Islanders are I don't know if they're gonna make
3:43
Speaker 2: the playoffs or not in these last twenty games. I
3:45
Speaker 2: hope they do, but you know, it's it's missed there.
3:51
Speaker 1: So it's got has been unbelievable. I got some breaking
3:55
Speaker 1: news is now looks like the Blues and Islanders are
3:58
Speaker 1: coming closer to a trade for Shen and that would
4:00
Speaker 1: be an incredible drake because Sheen was served the Heart
4:03
Speaker 1: and soul. I mentioned that of the Blues when they
4:05
Speaker 1: won a few years. I mean, it would be a
4:07
Speaker 1: very interesting move if the Islanders got him.
4:10
Speaker 2: Well, he's also the captain. He's he's also the captain
4:14
Speaker 2: of the of the Saint Louis Blue Cell. He'll bring
4:18
Speaker 2: leadership and he's another top six forward that that the
4:22
Speaker 2: that the Islanders that the Islanders need. I mean, they
4:25
Speaker 2: gotta score they got they gotta score, you know, And
4:28
Speaker 2: their power play for the second straight year was thirty
4:30
Speaker 2: one out of thirty two. Now I'm not great at math,
4:33
Speaker 2: but I know being thirty one out of thirty two
4:35
Speaker 2: is not good.
4:37
Speaker 1: Well, is that a wah situation? Or where is that?
4:40
Speaker 1: Where does that lie? I mean, I.
4:42
Speaker 2: Don't know, Alex because their power play has been bad,
4:47
Speaker 2: even in the Barry Trotz days when they went to
4:49
Speaker 2: the conference finals or to the final four two years
4:52
Speaker 2: in a row. It's just been one of those things
4:55
Speaker 2: that they can't get right. They've they've changed power play coaches,
5:00
Speaker 2: they changed power play technique players. It's really a frustrating thing.
5:05
Speaker 2: I mean last night they had a couple of power
5:06
Speaker 2: plays they didn't get a shot off. Really not good.
5:13
Speaker 2: Not good.
5:14
Speaker 1: Stand I mean, we're the deadline shut? But where do
5:16
Speaker 1: we stand overall? I mean, are all three teams pretty
5:18
Speaker 1: much done? Is this not gonna be a playoff year
5:21
Speaker 1: for any of our guys? And then try State? Or
5:23
Speaker 1: where are we? What are we looking at?
5:24
Speaker 2: I mean, well, the Islands obviously have the best shot.
5:27
Speaker 2: They're in a playoff spot right now. Columbus has been
5:31
Speaker 2: on such a tear it's just amazing that you think
5:34
Speaker 2: they're gonna slow down and they don't. So if anybody's
5:37
Speaker 2: gonna catch the Islanders or the Penguins, I think it's
5:40
Speaker 2: gonna be Columbus. They got Cornor Garland today from Vancouver,
5:45
Speaker 2: who was also talked about going to the Islanders.
5:48
Speaker 3: I'm a big Connor Garland fan.
5:51
Speaker 2: He's not a big guy, he's a like five nine
5:54
Speaker 2: five ten, but he'll he'll get those dirty goals for you.
5:57
Speaker 3: He's not afraid. That was a good trade for Columbus.
6:01
Speaker 2: But the biggest surprise to me, and there's only been,
6:04
Speaker 2: like I said, six or seven trades so far, is
6:07
Speaker 2: John Carlson. Yeah, going to the Ducks. Now we talk
6:12
Speaker 2: about the golden goal. Well, in World Juniors for the
6:16
Speaker 2: United States, John Carlson scored a golden goal in overtime
6:19
Speaker 2: to win the World Juniors back about I don't know
6:22
Speaker 2: about two thousand and eight, two thousand and seven, somewhere
6:24
Speaker 2: in there. That that surprised me. Actually it surprised the
6:28
Speaker 2: Washington Capitals. I saw a Vechkin he said, this is
6:31
Speaker 2: the saddest day of his career, losing John Carlson. Tom
6:36
Speaker 2: Wilson was very emotional. So that shows you the kind
6:38
Speaker 2: of player not only is talent wise, but the kind
6:42
Speaker 2: of teammate that he was. Losing guys like that, you know,
6:47
Speaker 2: that's tough.
6:48
Speaker 3: But let me tell you one thing.
6:49
Speaker 2: Adding a guy like John Carlson is veteran leadership and
6:53
Speaker 2: his veteran skills to a young, fast team like the
6:57
Speaker 2: Anaheim Ducks out they have so much talent. I mean,
7:02
Speaker 2: they're not there, no.
7:03
Speaker 1: And I think this is the best shot for Cryer
7:05
Speaker 1: to get a Cup. I really do. I think this
7:07
Speaker 1: is one of his years with this team.
7:08
Speaker 2: So yeah, well, if it's not this year, it'll be
7:11
Speaker 2: next year. Getting Crider was very very good for the Ducks. Yes,
7:16
Speaker 2: and we're on the come up to begin with.
7:18
Speaker 1: I mean they've been they've been on the come up
7:19
Speaker 1: a little bit here.
7:20
Speaker 2: So oh, without without question, they really have a nice
7:23
Speaker 2: young team.
7:24
Speaker 1: All right. Let me ask you this locally, though we
7:27
Speaker 1: expected Trochuk to be dealt, that hasn't happened yet. Karrick
7:31
Speaker 1: was Karrick was was. But when I hear things like
7:36
Speaker 1: roster retooling is why they're sitting, it's like, don't don't
7:40
Speaker 1: tell us, just tell us you're gonna trade the guys.
7:42
Speaker 1: You know at this point that that's trade code for trade,
7:44
Speaker 1: isn't it when there's a roster management and all that.
7:47
Speaker 2: So yeah, no, And I mean, let's fay, roster management
7:51
Speaker 2: is the code for a guy on the trading block.
7:55
Speaker 2: There's still let's see what time as we're doing this,
7:57
Speaker 2: it's two nineteen. I assume in the next forty one
8:04
Speaker 2: minutes at that he'll be traded. I don't know why
8:07
Speaker 2: the Rangers wouldn't trade him to get something back. Let's
8:10
Speaker 2: face it, he's a center who wins face offs. Even
8:15
Speaker 2: in the gold medal game, we saw the importance of
8:16
Speaker 2: faceoffs in overtime. We saw the inportant Trochick and bo
8:21
Speaker 2: Horvat faced off against each other and then left the ice,
8:24
Speaker 2: and then they put other players on because of the
8:27
Speaker 2: I want to take advantage of the three on three.
8:30
Speaker 2: But Trochick was there and show you how important the
8:32
Speaker 2: faceoff is. And you cannot tell me there isn't a
8:35
Speaker 2: team that's going to be in the playoffs that cannot
8:37
Speaker 2: use him. So I would have expected by three pm
8:43
Speaker 2: he will be traded. And you know, I feel like
8:46
Speaker 2: it completes the ball game. It completes the blow up
8:50
Speaker 2: if you will, of this team. If he gets traded,
8:52
Speaker 2: that would be it. That would be the final.
8:53
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean again, completing the blow up would be getting.
8:58
Speaker 2: But yeah, that would be getting rid of a banajad
9:02
Speaker 2: Or or Fox. And I heard something from Emily kaplan
9:06
Speaker 2: and on Canadian TV while I was watching this morning
9:11
Speaker 2: and we talked about this last week. Remember I asked you,
9:14
Speaker 2: what would you do about the range if the Rangers
9:16
Speaker 2: were trades? The stirking in the offseason, and that the
9:20
Speaker 2: net just the fact that the name is being bandied about.
9:23
Speaker 2: Other teams have probably asked about the Sterkin. I wouldn't
9:26
Speaker 2: have been surprised if Edmonton asked about I really that
9:32
Speaker 2: that would not have surprised. And why is that's something
9:34
Speaker 2: that could be revisited in the summertime. Why is he's
9:40
Speaker 2: on the block because but the Panthers they're in Well,
9:46
Speaker 2: he's on the block because he's going to be a
9:48
Speaker 2: free agent at the end of this year. The Panthers
9:51
Speaker 2: have had a bad year obviously, going to the final
9:54
Speaker 2: three years in a row, playing one hundred plus games
9:58
Speaker 2: three years in a row, it catches up to you
9:59
Speaker 2: if had major injuries. I don't think we're BOSSI doing
10:04
Speaker 2: a trade. I think, uh, we're you know, we'll see
10:08
Speaker 2: what happens in the next little while. We're forty minutes
10:10
Speaker 2: and six seconds away from from the tree.
10:15
Speaker 1: Well you know it's coming up, coming up the next
10:17
Speaker 1: couple of weeks after we just had the men's and
10:21
Speaker 1: women's I guess alebodied hockey teams. Whatever you want to say. Now,
10:26
Speaker 1: the Paralympians playing sled hockey is very intense. I actually
10:30
Speaker 1: played it once and I've damaged my finger on the ice.
10:33
Speaker 1: I never went back on there, but I was about
10:35
Speaker 1: seven or eight years old at the time. I might
10:38
Speaker 1: try it an adulthood. I don't know. We'll have to see.
10:40
Speaker 1: But my point is is this is gonna be exciting.
10:42
Speaker 1: Have you ever followed sled hockey? Well, yes I have,
10:47
Speaker 1: and actually before.
10:48
Speaker 2: You called me, I was watching the uh watching the
10:51
Speaker 2: opening ceremonies.
10:53
Speaker 1: I think, right now, this this Paralympics is finally being
10:59
Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to it.
11:00
Speaker 3: I'll be watching them.
11:02
Speaker 1: I think this Paralympics is finally being marketed the way
11:04
Speaker 1: they're supposed to. I mean this, I call them adaptive athletes.
11:07
Speaker 1: They deserve a shout out. They deserve all the praise,
11:10
Speaker 1: but you know, I want to get people an insight
11:12
Speaker 1: is because I've been around it forever. They didn't do
11:15
Speaker 1: it just to get the praise. They're freaking athletic guys.
11:18
Speaker 1: I mean, just because we might be missing a limb
11:20
Speaker 1: doesn't mean we're any different. We are competitive as hell.
11:27
Speaker 2: No doubt about it. And I've seen a copulation of
11:29
Speaker 2: some of your athletic feats, and I know that you're
11:32
Speaker 2: athletic as hell.
11:34
Speaker 1: And we know. I say that I'm friends with Patrick Holgren,
11:37
Speaker 1: who will be skiing for the Paralympic USA team. I mean,
11:40
Speaker 1: guy gets in a motorcycle accident, but that didn't let
11:44
Speaker 1: him stop his competitive spirit. He went and became a Paralympian.
11:47
Speaker 1: I mean, I love those kind of stories.
11:49
Speaker 3: Oh me too, which it shows you the true, the
11:54
Speaker 3: true human spear and how how tough these people are men.
12:00
Speaker 1: You know, the curling is very interesting. They have to
12:03
Speaker 1: push it along with the little for the thing because
12:05
Speaker 1: obviously when you're in the peril pelegic you can't reach
12:09
Speaker 1: out on the ice. But the way they adapt these
12:11
Speaker 1: sports is pretty neat.
12:12
Speaker 2: I have to say, Oh, I totally and I'll be
12:17
Speaker 2: looking forward to it.
12:18
Speaker 3: But like I said, but yeah, as we speak, the opening.
12:21
Speaker 2: Ceremony in Milana is going on right now on USA Network,
12:25
Speaker 2: and I guess Peacock.
12:27
Speaker 3: There you go.
12:28
Speaker 1: Well, oh, go ahead, go ahead. I mean, I don't
12:30
Speaker 1: have any more on the deadline, but I do want
12:32
Speaker 1: to get to the other big story, which is Team
12:33
Speaker 1: USA starting tonight World Baseball Classic. I know you don't
12:37
Speaker 1: want to watch it, but come on, Lou, I would
12:39
Speaker 1: love it if we follow it up with a gold
12:41
Speaker 1: medal to win the World Baseball Classic.
12:43
Speaker 3: Maybe even as I.
12:47
Speaker 2: Said in the past, of course I want to see
12:49
Speaker 2: the United States when this World Baseball Class. But it's
12:56
Speaker 2: let's face it, when there's a when when there's a
12:58
Speaker 2: tournament that has a mercy rule like the World Basbok
13:02
Speaker 2: Classic has, and the mercy rule is invoked today when
13:06
Speaker 2: Japan be Chinese Taipei fifteenth to nothing at the end
13:10
Speaker 2: of seven innings, you gotta and there's a pitch count,
13:14
Speaker 2: you gotta take it with a grain, a little bit
13:16
Speaker 2: of a grain of soul.
13:17
Speaker 3: That that's what I'm saying.
13:19
Speaker 2: Yes, and there's there's teams that really are they baseball countries, Czechia, Brazil,
13:25
Speaker 2: that's all.
13:25
Speaker 3: I'm not trying to downplay.
13:27
Speaker 1: Is more of a hockey town.
13:28
Speaker 3: Okay, Czech of course, yeah, absolutely.
13:33
Speaker 1: So really I've never seen them play in the World
13:34
Speaker 1: Baseball Classic before. I don't know I.
13:36
Speaker 2: Either, but apparently they are starting an amateur program, and
13:42
Speaker 2: all the guys who are there, I think are just
13:44
Speaker 2: are all amateurs, don't any level of professional baseball. But
13:49
Speaker 2: you know, I'll but it's not on the level of
13:54
Speaker 2: the of what we saw last a week ago Sunday.
13:57
Speaker 1: And you know, when they're in Judge, that's gonna be
14:00
Speaker 1: my The trade is official. The Isles have received Braidon Sheen.
14:05
Speaker 1: So that's breaking news as we talk right now.
14:07
Speaker 2: So so that means Braidon Shen waved his no trade
14:11
Speaker 2: clawse to come to the Islanders. By the way, his
14:14
Speaker 2: brother got trade this morning, Luke Shen got traded from
14:18
Speaker 2: the Winnipeg Jets to the to the Buffalo Sabers. By
14:20
Speaker 2: the way, all those young players the Buffalo Sabers have
14:23
Speaker 2: had over the years, they finally have meshed and since
14:27
Speaker 2: December ninth, they have the best record in the National
14:30
Speaker 2: Hockey League and they're gonna break that.
14:32
Speaker 3: They're gonna break that.
14:35
Speaker 2: Playoff and leave the New York Jets as the longest
14:39
Speaker 2: pro sports.
14:40
Speaker 3: Team America with a playoff drought.
14:44
Speaker 1: You know what, we haven't had you since we won
14:46
Speaker 1: the gold medal, that's right. So let me ask you
14:48
Speaker 1: about your reaction to all these guys going to the
14:51
Speaker 1: different arenas. You know, the Austin Matthews, Jack Hughes the
14:53
Speaker 1: other night. Then you had Jack Hughes make that incredible
14:56
Speaker 1: speech in Newark a couple of weeks ago. I mean,
14:59
Speaker 1: as an American and as a hockey guy, how to
15:02
Speaker 1: make you feel a little emotional, not just the game itself,
15:05
Speaker 1: but then to watch all the aftermath of them coming
15:07
Speaker 1: back to these arenas.
15:10
Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I mean it was it was all. It
15:16
Speaker 2: was well done by all of the all of the teams.
15:19
Speaker 2: The Devils had a nice ceremony. And I like the
15:23
Speaker 2: fact that you know, Jack Hughes also without Tate Thompson
15:27
Speaker 2: knowing called him, called them off the bench to join
15:31
Speaker 2: them on the ice at before Jack you spoke, and
15:35
Speaker 2: I thought that was that was a good teammate move
15:38
Speaker 2: by by Hey, he's a great kid. MHM said all
15:48
Speaker 2: the right things. Then the other night, the United States
15:53
Speaker 2: also had the UH when they played Toronto, they had
15:56
Speaker 2: members of the women's team, Megan Keller, Frank Gold the goalie,
16:02
Speaker 2: and uh, and there was another player there and I
16:05
Speaker 2: can't remember her name, but you know he did the
16:07
Speaker 2: face off between Megan Keller Matthews and I think you
16:12
Speaker 2: had Uh, it was three of them.
16:13
Speaker 3: It was it was Keller. I can't remember who the
16:18
Speaker 3: third one is. And I was watching it live, so
16:21
Speaker 3: I apologize well.
16:23
Speaker 1: And then I mentioned that because up in Buffalo, you know,
16:26
Speaker 1: Tage Thompson and Jack Ico. That was pretty cool moment.
16:29
Speaker 1: I mean, it's just fun to watch all that unity
16:32
Speaker 1: and all the arenas across the country. And as you
16:35
Speaker 1: called it, Lou, when Austin Matthews was given his flowers
16:39
Speaker 1: in Toronto, they booed him pretty loudly. And some say
16:43
Speaker 1: that could be worthy of a trade. You're gonna let
16:45
Speaker 1: the guys representatives of a country, uh say he should
16:50
Speaker 1: be traded like that's nonsense to me, Lou.
16:53
Speaker 3: That's nonsense on correct uh And uh.
16:58
Speaker 2: You know, we we texted each other last night night
17:01
Speaker 2: about the three.
17:02
Speaker 3: Teams in the Eastern Conference that.
17:06
Speaker 2: Have been big disappointments, the Rangers, the Devils and the
17:10
Speaker 2: Toronto Maple Leafs. And I wouldn't be surprised if Austin
17:15
Speaker 2: Matthews gets traded at the end of the year. I'm
17:20
Speaker 2: tuned into a lot of Toronto media. They're not warming
17:25
Speaker 2: up to the guy anymore. They think that he's that
17:28
Speaker 2: he got old, even though he's only twenty eight. He
17:30
Speaker 2: got old quickly.
17:31
Speaker 3: I would not be surprised if he's traded in the offseason.
17:35
Speaker 3: As matter of fact, they.
17:36
Speaker 1: Lost the Rangers last night. That's all you need to know, really,
17:39
Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, and I saw.
17:41
Speaker 2: The score was too too and then I didn't see
17:45
Speaker 2: the third period last night, and then I saw they
17:47
Speaker 2: lost six to two, and I know the last goal
17:50
Speaker 2: wasn't empty. And that by the way, I don't know
17:51
Speaker 2: why coaches pull their goalie when they're down two three goals.
17:55
Speaker 2: I don't get that, you know, late in the game.
17:57
Speaker 3: But uh, that's just me.
18:02
Speaker 1: Well, you know, my my favorite thing is when they
18:05
Speaker 1: now pull him with five minutes left in the game.
18:07
Speaker 1: I don't understand that either, But that's on the Sorry
18:09
Speaker 1: for another thing. It's the point like, you can't let
18:11
Speaker 1: what he did for a team USA affect him as
18:15
Speaker 1: your player. But you know what if I'm Aston Matthews,
18:17
Speaker 1: I'll like you have that attitude. I want out anyway,
18:19
Speaker 1: Like I want to be out of that country, that city.
18:22
Speaker 1: I mean, I'd want to be out of there. I
18:23
Speaker 1: really know.
18:25
Speaker 2: I agree, I totally agree with you. And that may happen.
18:28
Speaker 2: They may they may sit down and talk to him
18:30
Speaker 2: and say hey, we're going into a rebuild and they
18:35
Speaker 2: may talk to him. They might talk to William Kneelander
18:39
Speaker 2: uh to say hey, if we can move you, what
18:42
Speaker 2: do you think? And I think Austin Matthews probably would
18:46
Speaker 2: say yes, I think And we know the teams that will.
18:50
Speaker 3: Be in on it, you know, Uh.
18:53
Speaker 2: It'll be the Rangers and the Flyers and the Islanders
18:56
Speaker 2: and the Devils and the black Hawks. You know, we
19:00
Speaker 2: know the teams that that that'll be in on or
19:02
Speaker 2: Boston Matthews.
19:04
Speaker 3: So so see. But yeah, it wasn't great the way
19:08
Speaker 3: they treated.
19:09
Speaker 1: Him, Oh no, horribly. And then of course Clutterbuck, although
19:15
Speaker 1: Clutterbuck Hullabuck didn't really get that much negativity up in
19:19
Speaker 1: Winnipeg that I noticed. I mean, I feel like he
19:21
Speaker 1: was whatever.
19:23
Speaker 2: Now, No, you're you're right, because the Winnipeg market and
19:27
Speaker 2: Western Canada is different than Eastern Canada.
19:31
Speaker 3: Different, So.
19:39
Speaker 1: There you go, all right, I'm back, yeh. I mean
19:43
Speaker 1: it just it's it's different markets too. There's that as well.
19:46
Speaker 1: But I just think Austin Matthews deserves way better, not
19:50
Speaker 1: just because of waiting FORTINUSA, but just in general. He
19:52
Speaker 1: deserves way better. He really does.
19:54
Speaker 3: He scored sixty goals for the Yeah sixty golf season
19:57
Speaker 3: two years ago.
19:58
Speaker 2: For the Maple League, He's already broken the career scoring
20:02
Speaker 2: record for goals. I don't know what they want from this.
20:06
Speaker 1: Guy, all right? Uh so we got we got that
20:11
Speaker 1: out of the way, and now we're at the trade
20:13
Speaker 1: of the line. We've got that breaking news story. What
20:15
Speaker 1: else is on your mind? Louis? I mean, I feel
20:17
Speaker 1: like it's right now not as big of a lively
20:19
Speaker 1: sports season the Knicks. The Knicks are on right now.
20:24
Speaker 1: They've seem to win one night to lose. I don't
20:26
Speaker 1: know where they're going to right now. But look, it's
20:30
Speaker 1: it's a little frustrating because again, all the pump and
20:34
Speaker 1: circumstances done with the hockey, we go back to depressing hockey.
20:38
Speaker 1: It feels like, so how do we get our mood better?
20:41
Speaker 1: I guess Saint John's is really the guiding light right now.
20:43
Speaker 2: Right, we got to see where Saint John's ends up.
20:46
Speaker 2: Will kind of see they get on selection Sunday. As
20:51
Speaker 2: far as the Knicks go, I mean, I don't think
20:55
Speaker 2: based on how the NBA is nowadays. And this is
20:57
Speaker 2: just my observation, I don't think you could pinpoint like
21:01
Speaker 2: we like say, in hockey, Colorado is going to be
21:03
Speaker 2: the favorite in hockey going in, and you could say
21:07
Speaker 2: Oklahoma State is gonna be the favorite in basketball.
21:09
Speaker 3: But in basketball we'll just say, we'll just say the
21:12
Speaker 3: Eastern Conference.
21:14
Speaker 2: I don't know, man, you just it's I don't know
21:17
Speaker 2: if you can get a handle on on what's going
21:21
Speaker 2: to happen in the playoffs based on what's happened in
21:23
Speaker 2: the regular season.
21:25
Speaker 3: I don't.
21:25
Speaker 2: I don't think that that is so so we'll see.
21:29
Speaker 2: I don't think anything the regular season carries over to
21:31
Speaker 2: the playoffs.
21:35
Speaker 1: Well, well you mean for the Knicks, Well, look, but
21:39
Speaker 1: I think.
21:39
Speaker 3: The Nicks have a great chance to get to the finals.
21:41
Speaker 1: I do. I know, but you got to overcome Detroit.
21:44
Speaker 1: I know they're going to be right up there with them.
21:45
Speaker 2: So it's just the one thing I'll say Detroit two
21:50
Speaker 2: years ago they won fourteen games?
21:52
Speaker 3: Are they when when they played?
21:54
Speaker 2: I remember they didn't even win a playoff series last year,
21:57
Speaker 2: So how are they going to go from two years
22:00
Speaker 2: ago being fourteen and sixty eight? They won forty four
22:03
Speaker 2: last year? Are they going to get to the NBA finals?
22:06
Speaker 2: Just me if it was Detroit against the Knicks in
22:09
Speaker 2: a playoff series, I'm still favoring the Knicks.
22:14
Speaker 1: By the way, Ryan's also recording his podcast We Do
22:16
Speaker 1: Our Simon Fantasy in the studio over so, I mean,
22:18
Speaker 1: we're all recording about this trade deadline.
22:20
Speaker 3: Okay, wins now?
22:21
Speaker 1: How is now? Which now features a Rangers trade. Pulio
22:27
Speaker 1: has been traded.
22:28
Speaker 3: So yeah, so that's what I think is going to
22:31
Speaker 3: happen in the NBA.
22:33
Speaker 1: As the Rangers trade Pulio now to Chicago. So they
22:38
Speaker 1: didn't make a move right now. And it's now about
22:40
Speaker 1: twenty five minutes before three o'clock, so we'll have to see.
22:44
Speaker 1: But Lou, I mean, you're right, we haven't seen them
22:46
Speaker 1: battle tested. Kate actually was his first year last year,
22:50
Speaker 1: you know, in the playoffs, and.
22:52
Speaker 2: Yeah, being on that level, being on the on that
22:54
Speaker 2: big time NBA level. No, you're correct, So I don't
22:58
Speaker 2: think anything that we see in a regular season translates
23:02
Speaker 2: to what we've going to see in the playoffs.
23:04
Speaker 1: That's just nick Fans will say they missed Tibodeau. But
23:06
Speaker 1: I like the fact that he gives other guys a chance,
23:08
Speaker 1: like I like the Shamans of the world, and the
23:11
Speaker 1: Coles are getting more playing time. It might make for
23:14
Speaker 1: a better postseason. A lot of these guys get injured
23:16
Speaker 1: every time around the second round of the playoffs because
23:19
Speaker 1: it turned out from the first eighty two games, I mean,
23:22
Speaker 1: that's what it is.
23:23
Speaker 2: Well, did you see what's happening tonight? Uh? Jason Tatum
23:29
Speaker 2: Y's back later.
23:33
Speaker 3: Which is surprising to me.
23:35
Speaker 2: Let's see how effective he is before we say anything
23:39
Speaker 2: about how he's going to affect the Celtics.
23:43
Speaker 3: But boy, he worked that doctor O'Malley, who I think.
23:47
Speaker 2: Operated on at the hospital special surgery, the heck of
23:51
Speaker 2: a job putting him back together so quickly.
23:53
Speaker 1: All right, Well, you were in the NBA during those
23:56
Speaker 1: NBA NBC years. I mean you watched the retro from
23:59
Speaker 1: the other night. How exciting was that to see them
24:02
Speaker 1: try and throw it back a little bit with Bob
24:03
Speaker 1: Costas and all that. Did it bring you back to
24:06
Speaker 1: those days or was it very very modern?
24:09
Speaker 2: Well, unfortunately, the game was horrendous. The Spurs one by
24:16
Speaker 2: forty five, they were winning. The game was over in
24:19
Speaker 2: a second in the second quarter. Philadelphia arrested some guys,
24:22
Speaker 2: which is which is terrible. But as far as having
24:25
Speaker 2: Costas and and Doug Collins and Fortello and Hannah Storm, yeah,
24:31
Speaker 2: that's great in those old graphics. And again that was
24:36
Speaker 2: to me the nineties and the early two thousands and
24:40
Speaker 2: the mid two thousands, that was the golden era, the
24:43
Speaker 2: end of the golden era.
24:44
Speaker 3: Of the NBA. So that's just me.
24:49
Speaker 1: Well on those days, well, look and those are the
24:52
Speaker 1: MJ days. And now who thought MJ would be finding
24:54
Speaker 1: a championship team in race? And Nasca's right.
24:58
Speaker 2: I mean, that's just shows you how great a competitor
25:02
Speaker 2: he is and anything he did striving for excellence.
25:06
Speaker 1: And look, I love that Last Dance series, but it
25:10
Speaker 1: painted him as such an arrogant guy. I never realized
25:13
Speaker 1: he was that arrogant until, like.
25:15
Speaker 2: He's when you're a great competitor, you're gonna have to
25:21
Speaker 2: have a little bit.
25:23
Speaker 3: I'm gonna still one of your words. You can't be
25:25
Speaker 3: milk toast. I win the championship.
25:29
Speaker 1: All right, one last riff for you before we sign
25:32
Speaker 1: off until the deadline to come down. We'll see, but
25:36
Speaker 1: one more riffs. What if they released Gino so that
25:40
Speaker 1: Tom Brady come out of retirement and be the mentor
25:43
Speaker 1: for Fernando Mendos.
25:46
Speaker 2: Well, I have a feeling that Brady will be the
25:49
Speaker 2: mentor for U for Fernando Mendoza, he's not coming out
25:54
Speaker 2: of retirement. I think he's having too good a life
25:57
Speaker 2: hob nobbing around the world, going to the to the
26:00
Speaker 2: Olympics and other big events and trying to rebuild the Raiders.
26:05
Speaker 2: But somebody's gonna pick up Geno. I mean, a guy
26:07
Speaker 2: can play, it's not like the guy can't play. And
26:11
Speaker 2: we know how short the quarterback depth is in the
26:15
Speaker 2: NFL right now. So I wish, I wish there was
26:19
Speaker 2: a reason why the Raiders wouldn't pick Mendoz and let
26:22
Speaker 2: him fall to the Jets at number two, But unfortunately
26:25
Speaker 2: that's not going to happen.
26:28
Speaker 1: So get a two year deal with New England, which
26:32
Speaker 1: is interesting because either he's going to be moved up
26:35
Speaker 1: or he's going to be a very rich backup. I
26:37
Speaker 1: hate to say that way, but it's very interesting to
26:39
Speaker 1: give him a two year deal. What do you think
26:40
Speaker 1: the move is behind that?
26:42
Speaker 2: Well, again, the best quarter the best drop to have
26:46
Speaker 2: is to be the second or third street quarterback in
26:48
Speaker 2: the NFL. Chase Daniel, who is now retired and he's
26:53
Speaker 2: does a podcast and he's into broadcasting at the University Missouri,
26:57
Speaker 2: played for a lot of NFL teams as a backup
27:00
Speaker 2: some ridiculous amount of money and played it just a
27:02
Speaker 2: handful of games over ten eleven year career.
27:05
Speaker 3: Best job you can have. First of all, you learn
27:07
Speaker 3: about the game. And for a guy like.
27:09
Speaker 2: The Veto, if he doesn't get into another NFL regular
27:13
Speaker 2: season game, he's picking up point just to be an
27:16
Speaker 2: offensive coordinator, a quarterback coach, you know.
27:20
Speaker 1: And but I think he's got a lot of chops.
27:22
Speaker 1: I think he's got a lot of chops to him.
27:24
Speaker 3: I really do.
27:24
Speaker 1: I think he can be Oh.
27:25
Speaker 3: I agree, he has a lot of chops, no question.
27:30
Speaker 1: And he's learned. I mean he's a backup to a rookie,
27:32
Speaker 1: which is so interesting because you know, I still consider
27:35
Speaker 1: Drake not not seasoned at all. He's still a rookie,
27:38
Speaker 1: you know, but he's actually he's still learning.
27:40
Speaker 3: He's still in a learning process, no question.
27:44
Speaker 1: That was just interesting. But hey, maybe they have some
27:46
Speaker 1: plans for him to continue to mentor Drake. I don't
27:49
Speaker 1: know exactly, but we'll have to see. All right, about
27:51
Speaker 1: twenty minutes to the end of the trade deadline, I
27:55
Speaker 1: don't know. I thought I was expecting a flurry. I'm
27:57
Speaker 1: more of a flurry of things like I just.
28:00
Speaker 2: Didn't seem as surprise too. The record for most trades,
28:05
Speaker 2: it's thirty two. Was done a couple of times in
28:06
Speaker 2: the last four or five years. Usually it's around twenty,
28:10
Speaker 2: but this year, like, well, I don't even think we've
28:12
Speaker 2: hit ten yet. The biggest trade, Alex the trade deadline
28:16
Speaker 2: happened two months ago.
28:18
Speaker 3: Quinn.
28:18
Speaker 2: You was going from Vancouver to Minnesota, and Minnesota got
28:22
Speaker 2: you know, they got a whole back, they got a
28:24
Speaker 2: number one pick, they got Zev buying him back, they
28:26
Speaker 2: got Marco Rossi back, and they got another young player back.
28:30
Speaker 2: And I can't remember his name, but that was the
28:33
Speaker 2: biggest trade. And that happened on December twelfth.
28:36
Speaker 1: By the way, Ryan updated after daming because I told
28:38
Speaker 1: him on podcast with you. He said it's a first
28:41
Speaker 1: rounder of the Islanders gave up. So that's very interesting
28:43
Speaker 1: that they would give him a first rounder for him.
28:45
Speaker 2: Okay, I wonder if it's theirs or if it's Colorado's
28:51
Speaker 2: because remember they have Colorado's pick this year, which is
28:54
Speaker 2: going to be near thirty.
28:56
Speaker 1: So and last, we all know Quinn wants to be
29:02
Speaker 1: a Devil. He wants to be with his brothers. I
29:03
Speaker 1: don't know that will ever happen.
29:04
Speaker 3: But well, I wonder.
29:06
Speaker 2: I was wondering if their Olympic experience, Quinn winning the
29:13
Speaker 2: quarterfinal game with the overtime goal, Jack winning the gold
29:17
Speaker 2: medal with the overtime goal in the in the final,
29:21
Speaker 2: I wonder if that brought them even closer. This Olympic experience,
29:28
Speaker 2: I would again he has next year. Billy Gren' is
29:32
Speaker 2: a really good general manager. I think he's gonna try
29:37
Speaker 2: to keep him, gonna try to sign him, you know,
29:40
Speaker 2: so we'll you know, we'll see. I would love to
29:43
Speaker 2: see him with the Devils, I mean I really would.
29:46
Speaker 2: I'm surprised the Devils haven't made a trade today. I'm surprised,
29:49
Speaker 2: but I don't know what's gonna happen there I don't
29:52
Speaker 2: know if the coach is gonna get fired, Sheldon Keith,
29:54
Speaker 2: I don't know if Tommy Fitzgerald's gonna get released as
29:56
Speaker 2: general manager. But that's a team that had after starting
30:01
Speaker 2: eight and one has failed miserably.
30:05
Speaker 1: The way to say, they have a lot of talent
30:09
Speaker 1: on that team too, but absolutely.
30:13
Speaker 2: A ton of talents in their prime years, not old
30:17
Speaker 2: in their prime years.
30:19
Speaker 3: So this very very very disappointing year for the New
30:23
Speaker 3: Jersey Devils. I have to think that Jackie scored that
30:26
Speaker 3: golden goal.
30:27
Speaker 1: I keep thinking yeah, and I keep think him back
30:29
Speaker 1: to the trade headline from a few years ago when
30:31
Speaker 1: the Rangers out right missed out on Jake gunsl Like,
30:34
Speaker 1: I really thought he would be a great addition here
30:36
Speaker 1: and just dury to not pull the trigger, and then
30:39
Speaker 1: all of a sudden he trades everybody. It's like if
30:41
Speaker 1: Dolan didn't see the ineptitude, then I I don't know
30:44
Speaker 1: what it'll take, But you make a good point. I
30:47
Speaker 1: think that he knows how to put the puck in
30:50
Speaker 1: the net. He's not afraid he'll get you know, he'll
30:53
Speaker 1: get into that those dirty areas in front of that.
30:56
Speaker 3: I'm a big Jake Gunseill fan and he's also uh,
31:00
Speaker 3: you know, a.
31:01
Speaker 2: Gold medalist, so you know, yeah that that is that right.
31:05
Speaker 1: That trade that that was a big miss for the Rangers.
31:08
Speaker 1: But you know, we're all trudged a law here in
31:11
Speaker 1: New York, it feels like with the hockey scene. So
31:14
Speaker 1: love to see. But I was going to say the
31:17
Speaker 1: other thing about all this, especially around these headlines, is
31:21
Speaker 1: doesn't bring the question all these contracts, at least the
31:24
Speaker 1: Rangers that I could think of it. I mean, the
31:26
Speaker 1: Islanders sounder guy for eight years, has he lived up
31:28
Speaker 1: with expectations? Ability to start asking these questions, hey, has
31:32
Speaker 1: laughy lived up to his eight year expectation? He has not.
31:36
Speaker 1: In fact, then they got in that contract extension. He
31:38
Speaker 1: was crap, he was not. No, I don't understand it.
31:45
Speaker 3: You're right, and it's going to be Fox.
31:48
Speaker 1: Been dealing Fox have been dealing with injury. I understand
31:50
Speaker 1: that that that's part of why his seven year deal.
31:53
Speaker 1: You haven't seen him in his full potential. So I
31:57
Speaker 1: don't know. But after asking these questions, when you see
32:00
Speaker 1: the deadline come around and see them keep them guys,
32:03
Speaker 1: and then I forgot the eight year guy. I think
32:05
Speaker 1: it was a defensiveman that you guys signed for eight years,
32:07
Speaker 1: wasn't it The Islanders.
32:11
Speaker 2: Yeah, a roman Off and he got hurt early on
32:15
Speaker 2: for the you know in Dallas when he took that
32:18
Speaker 2: shot from from Rantin and h.
32:22
Speaker 3: Islands miss him.
32:23
Speaker 2: He's their best, stay at home, hard hitting defenseman. And
32:27
Speaker 2: but he'll be back next year.
32:28
Speaker 1: And I feel, like I said in Baseball man, like
32:31
Speaker 1: I feel like baseball where a guy he signs all
32:34
Speaker 1: these extensions and then uh, he gets injured. I mean,
32:38
Speaker 1: Trout's famous unfortunately famously got locked into that ten year
32:41
Speaker 1: deal with the Angels. And that's still you talk about
32:44
Speaker 1: free agent signings of any of anybody, that's the one
32:47
Speaker 1: that hurts the most to see and athlete get locked
32:49
Speaker 1: down like that, and then I want to move him.
32:53
Speaker 1: It's almost like torture. I hate to say it that way,
32:56
Speaker 1: you know, but it feels like that.
32:57
Speaker 2: And he will not talk bad about Moreno or the
33:00
Speaker 2: Angels organization. He I mean, I was watching reading yesterday.
33:05
Speaker 2: He will not talk bad about the organization.
33:08
Speaker 1: And by the way, pretty damn good. He came back
33:11
Speaker 1: and hit four hundred last year, I think so. I mean,
33:15
Speaker 1: he's still got a pop to him.
33:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, he does, but he actually had his worst statistical
33:21
Speaker 2: year since his half year rookie year when he brought
33:25
Speaker 2: him up at the end of the season. It's a shame,
33:28
Speaker 2: great great player. I mean, he won three MVPs early on.
33:32
Speaker 2: He probably could have won five.
33:36
Speaker 3: And uh, it's a shame, it really is. And he
33:39
Speaker 3: started going to be thirty.
33:40
Speaker 1: Five and they had that you're talking about that team.
33:44
Speaker 1: I remember, and I feel like an old guy in
33:46
Speaker 1: the rocking chair right now, but I remember when it
33:48
Speaker 1: was him and Otani and there was another guy there,
33:51
Speaker 1: and you thought they were gonna win with those guys.
33:52
Speaker 2: And it just one last thing, you know, you're hear
33:58
Speaker 2: that that the Hani's people, his agents, brought the Dodger
34:05
Speaker 2: deal back to the Angels with the deferred money, the
34:08
Speaker 2: exact same deal, and Audi Moreno said no. If that's true,
34:17
Speaker 2: that is why one of the worst decisions Audi Moreno
34:20
Speaker 2: could have possibly made. If he came back to the
34:24
Speaker 2: Angels one last time, and if that's accurate that story
34:28
Speaker 2: and he prevented and he presented the Angels with that
34:30
Speaker 2: deal and the Angels didn't take it.
34:34
Speaker 3: That is nuts.
34:35
Speaker 1: I would have to sell the team sign right outside
34:37
Speaker 1: the front gate, you know.
34:39
Speaker 3: But you know, yeah, no, it's crazy.
34:42
Speaker 1: And look at what they did in the meantime. They
34:44
Speaker 1: put all their energy into Rendona said, oh, I don't
34:46
Speaker 1: really like baseball. I you know, I just didn't.
34:48
Speaker 3: Yeah, how is that? You know? I mean, you know,
34:53
Speaker 3: I really don't like baseball. It's crazy, these guys.
34:56
Speaker 1: Are that's the guy they wanted to bank. Gut is
34:58
Speaker 1: their big agent, siding it was weird.
35:02
Speaker 3: Well, he got lucky.
35:03
Speaker 2: He had a big postseason when the NAT's one Randon
35:07
Speaker 2: and he cashed in. And then he finds out, you
35:10
Speaker 2: know what, I really don't want to play baseball anymore.
35:12
Speaker 3: I really don't like baseball. I don't get it.
35:16
Speaker 1: All right, little well, as I see Russia's providing intelligence
35:20
Speaker 1: to Iran, thank god they're nowhere near the Olympics or
35:23
Speaker 1: the Paralympics, I could stay out of it for as
35:25
Speaker 1: long as he as they I see the deems acceptable.
35:29
Speaker 1: I'll end that with that note today.
35:31
Speaker 2: It's a good way to end up, Alex. Thank you
35:33
Speaker 2: so much. Always a pleasure being with you.
35:36
Speaker 1: All right. That was Luterminello when Terminaldo's take on one
35:38
Speaker 1: leg up Alex Media
