- 1:18Johnny Doller. You, Brian, missus Doller, how are you this morning?
- 1:22Not so good? I didn't sleep very well. How'd you do?
- 1:25I think I have about what you want on John Rudon. Well, if
- 1:26you haven't, I can get it from missus Rudon. What I thought you
- 1:30didn't want to tell her about the report that her husband might still be alive.
- 1:33She knows she overheard us talking last night. Oh well, what do
- 1:37you want to do? I might as well look at what you have and
- 1:40get this over with. How about an hour from now? I'll be waiting
- 1:42for you tonight and every weekday Night. Bob Bailey and the Transcribed Adventures of
- 1:55the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account America's fabulous freelance insure Investigator George Truly
- 2:00Johnny Dollar expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar to the Universal Adjustment Bureau
- 2:16of Baltimore, Maryland. The following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation
- 2:21of the Chesapeake fraud matter. Expense account Item six dollars and a half one
- 2:28collect telegram from Denver, Colorado. I have located Frank Bowers as per your
- 2:32request. Cursory investigation discloses little evidence that would lead me to believe he might
- 2:38be the John Ridden of Baltimore. Looks like a handbone to me, Johnny,
- 2:44what do I do now? Signed George Hanley, George Hanley Investigations,
- 2:47Incorporated, Denver, Colorado. Item seven two dollars same thing telegram from me.
- 2:54Things are about the same way here, Sit tight, I'll see you
- 2:58in a day or two of Johnny. Once the telegrams are out of the
- 3:04way. I walked three blocks from my hotel to the office building of Hugh
- 3:06Brian. It was an impressive place, full of lawyers and doctors. Hugh
- 3:10Brian looked a little haggard when I saw him. It took me a while
- 3:15to get all this together. Half the night. That wasn't that bigger rush.
- 3:19Oh, get it out of the way. The sooner you have what
- 3:21you need, the sooner you can make sure, and the sooner I won't
- 3:23worry about it anymore. Did you talk to Elizabeth yet today? No?
- 3:28Just last night. Oh, I thought maybe she might have called you this
- 3:30morning. I'm so sorry for that girl. Well, don't feel too bad,
- 3:36mister Bryan. We both did everything we could to keep the report that
- 3:38her husband might be alive from her. Awkward as it was. I know,
- 3:43I know, I still don't understand it. I guess well. A
- 3:46man named Coombs, an insurance official, thinks he saw Reardon in Denver last
- 3:50week using the name Frank Bowers. He's sure that Bowers was Arden. If
- 3:54he turns out to be Reared and the insurance company has been taken for twenty
- 3:58thousand dollars they paid to its read just to set you straight. Let did
- 4:01make Elizabeth party to a fraud and John Lord knows that's silly, silly,
- 4:08I'm not. Yeah, Well, here's what I have. Nah, this
- 4:14is one of the last pictures taken of John Reardon. Have the negatives?
- 4:19Yes, here, and these are some vital statistics on him. The physical
- 4:26part I got from his doctor. He stood in examination about a month before
- 4:29the accident. This is the doctor's name here. Yes. Now, these
- 4:32other things are in his background and education. Here a copy of his marriage
- 4:38license, birth certificate. How did you get hold of these things? Well?
- 4:42I handle a lot of business for John, file a lot of his
- 4:44papers for him. These were just packed away. Took a while to find
- 4:46them. Hey, a copy of his fingerprints? Would those help more than
- 4:53any of this other stuff? Fingerprints aren't standard papers in anybody's file. What
- 4:58John went in the army, He did some engineering work the proving grounds in
- 5:00Aberdeen and he was finger fitted there. He was a guy at the time.
- 5:03He had a set of his own blown up and put on the wall
- 5:05in a picture frame. You know, just a joke. I dugged him
- 5:10out of his personal things. Now, then here's a copy of his financial
- 5:14records, tax returns, and whatnot. I spent about an hour in Ugh
- 5:17Bryan's office going over material it would help me in the investigation. The pictures
- 5:21and fingerprints were the most helpful items. After I had finished, I went
- 5:26back to my hotel, packed my bags and checked out expense account item eight
- 5:34three hundred and ninety eight dollars. My hotel and incidentals in Baltimore and plain
- 5:38Fair to Denver. I got there at nine in the morning, the air
- 5:42crisp, thin and full of sunshine. I run in a car at the
- 5:46airport and drove into town. Half an hour later. I was talking to
- 5:48my detective friend, George Hanley, pod you like Denver, Old Pal,
- 5:53I haven't been here for a few years. Doesn't look the same. Bigger
- 5:56and better. H They're thinking of putting up buildings as big as those mountains
- 5:59over there. I love it, so's the wife. I'm glad you ought
- 6:01to try a place like this for a while, Johnny. I want to
- 6:04find yourself a girl and settle down. Lets us settle down, Georgie,
- 6:10Oh sure, how'd it go? You ask me to look in at Frank
- 6:13Bowers. I looked into him as much as I could without talking to him.
- 6:16They are Johnny, his bank account, his friends, his troubles,
- 6:19his enemies, everything. How about his police record, one traffic violation two
- 6:24years ago, Never been in any kind of trouble around here, gets along
- 6:27fine with everybody. Well, tell me about everybody, Georgie. His laundry
- 6:30man, the milkman, the guy who tends bar in his neighborhood, the
- 6:33man he buys gas from. I talked to all of them. How about
- 6:35the people he works for. Well, he don't do much of that.
- 6:39As far as I can see. It's gotten offers downtown. Calls himself a
- 6:42consulting engineer, goes there once or twice a week to pick up his mail.
- 6:45Woll No, that's a very nice way to be able to live.
- 6:47Is he starving to death, Georgie. No, He's got a good bank
- 6:50account, makes regular deposits. Money comes from a New York bonding firm.
- 6:55He owns a little two bedroom house out beyond park Hill. Paid thirty eight
- 6:58thousand dollars for him. Wow. Sleeps in one bedroom, uses the other
- 7:01one for kind of studio. Shut us around with clay oils and according to
- 7:04the nosey dame who lives across the street. He tries to write, how
- 7:09about his friends? Lots of them? Pays his bills, gets drunk now
- 7:12and then normal. Tell me about his wife. He hasn't got one,
- 7:15lives alone. Find out who he goes with, Georgie. No, as
- 7:17much as I could find out, he doesn't know with any enemies or the
- 7:20guy in the cleaning shot hates his guts, Bowers doesn't like his shirts with
- 7:25stars. Did you check out the residency business? As far as I could,
- 7:29he bought that house out in park Hill in nineteen fifty one, paid
- 7:31cash for it. Record of the sale gives his former residences Toledo, Ohio.
- 7:36Well, how long has he been a resident here? As near as
- 7:40I can figure, and this is just rough four or five years ago.
- 7:43The first financial transaction was the house he bought. The next was a car.
- 7:46He could have been here a long time before that, though, Well
- 7:49the time element would fit for Radon. What do you think, Georgie?
- 7:54I think you're probably wasting a lot of money investigating this guy. He doesn't
- 7:58seem like the kind of man who's high out from anybody here. Look at
- 8:01this phote on. Is this Frank Bowers? Yeah, yeah, I'd say
- 8:07so. Five eleven one seventy, olive complexion, no scars, no glasses,
- 8:11brown hair, about thirty five could be him from that. Yes,
- 8:16this is a picture of John Ruden and the description is Rudens. What do
- 8:22you want to do? Now? Keep on it. I got George Hanley
- 8:30busy making a check with some people in Toledo who would find out whether or
- 8:33not a Frank Bauer had once lived there. Then I took my rented car
- 8:37and drove out to the address Hanley had given me. It was in the
- 8:39east side of the city, near the airport, a one story frame house,
- 8:43a fifty three mark in the driveway. I'm looking for mister Frank bars
- 8:50Oh who are you, Johnny Dollar. I'm Frank bark Well. I'm an
- 8:54insurance investigator. Mister Bowers, I'd like to talk to you. Oh,
- 8:56come on it, thank you, take a chair anywhere son. You might
- 9:03just making a routine check, mister Bowers thought perhaps you could help me.
- 9:07I don't know anything about my neighbors, if that's that kind of thing.
- 9:09No, I'm running down a report that came across our office in Baltimore.
- 9:13Ever been there, mister Bowers? No swell placed on Chesapeake Bay. Well,
- 9:18I like dinner. What's this all about it? Well? Do you
- 9:20happen to remember a few days ago when you were at a place called the
- 9:24Ship's Tavern that's in the Brown Palace. This was the last Friday, to
- 9:28be exact? Should I remember when I do steal an ash tray or walk
- 9:33out on a check? A man from Baltimore was there that day, mister
- 9:35Bowers. His name was Kombs, Paul Coombs. You met him, did
- 9:41I? Yes? Right at the bar? You had a drink or two
- 9:43with him? Well, I might have. I don't know whether to admit
- 9:46it or not. What are you kidding it? I don't understand it.
- 9:48I know it seems confusing. Maybe this will help. Take a look at
- 9:54this now. You must admit you look a great deal like them. And
- 10:00in that picture. Yeah, I suppose I do. Well, I'll be
- 10:05done. I'd do it that this could be a picture of me. That's
- 10:09why I'm here, mister Bowers. You see, the company I represent ensured
- 10:13the man in this picture for quite an amount of money. His name was
- 10:16John Arden. He was lost in a boat accident in Chesapeake Bay five years
- 10:20ago. The mister Coombs who met you at the bar here last week thought
- 10:24you were John Rierdon I don't blame him, but I'm not close though.
- 10:30Now I want to smoke. Oh thanks, thanks, sure. Mister Coombs
- 10:37was a lifelong friend of John Ridens. I have his sworn statement here about
- 10:41that meeting with you in the certainty of his identity. You do, yes,
- 10:43right here? Would you like to see it? Not particularly? I
- 10:48understand you went to Ohio State. What year did you graduate? I didn't
- 10:52go to Ohio State. Look, what is this? Well, that's what
- 10:54you told, mister Coombs. It's in the statement. Oh I remember that
- 10:58bird now, oh I might have told him any names to Dolly. You
- 11:01know, he's one of those inquisitive kind, real sure himself. Yeah,
- 11:05yeah, I remember. Look, don't tell me they sent you all away
- 11:09out here from Baltimore. They did on that guy. Say so, it's
- 11:13funny. Did you go to college, mister Paris. I'd like to clear
- 11:18up that detail. Did you go to college? Well, yes, yes,
- 11:20I went to Carnegie Tech thirty six through forty. You haven't lived all
- 11:24your life in Colorado, then, where else have you lived. Look,
- 11:28do you have any right to ask me questions like this? No? No,
- 11:31but you'll help me a lot if you'll answer them. Well, why
- 11:35not? Okay, I've lived in New York, Pittsburgh, Kansas City to
- 11:39lead around the country. Came here a few years ago. My health seem
- 11:41good to my ass. Ever been married once in nineteen forty two. It
- 11:46didn't last long. Oh why else? You want to know? If you
- 11:50want a hurry, I can come back later. No, no, it's
- 11:52not that well. Look, it seemed like a nice guy thatlla, but
- 11:54it just makes me uncomfortable answering these questions yours. I appreciate the time you've
- 11:58given me All mister Bauer, please understand it's a matter of establishing identity.
- 12:03But you know I am. I just told you that's true. I don't
- 12:07like this business much. Is there any way you're gonn eliminate it? The
- 12:09most positive identification would be from fingerprints, mister Bauer. I'm not so much
- 12:16interested in who you are as improving that you're not John Rierdon. If you
- 12:20volunteered a set of fingerprints, it had saved me a great deal of work
- 12:24and you a great deal of trouble. Well, sure. One we drove
- 12:35downtown together that George Hanley's office and used the portable fingerprint kits. I took
- 12:41a complete set of Frank Bauer's prints he attached. I thanked him for his
- 12:43time and trouble, and he left. If he was trying to cover something,
- 12:48it certainly wasn't apparent from his conversational reactions. There had been a moment
- 12:52when I was sure he wasn't Frank Bauer. On the other hand, I
- 12:56was sure that he wasn't John. That cuts it, Johnny, right,
- 13:03thumb and index princes don't match at all, not even close. George,
- 13:07and I thought I was getting somewhere. I found out he was never in
- 13:09Toledo, or at least never registered or licensed as an engineer. Well,
- 13:13these prints do it when you're going home, Johnny, I don't know.
- 13:18There's no reason to stick around any longer. This is crazy. He approved
- 13:20your case with the print. He was too anxious to help me prove a
- 13:24Georgie. You ask any ordinary man on the street two personal questions about himself
- 13:28and he'll tell you to go jump with the lake. He asked him for
- 13:31his fingerprints. He's able to smash here, So get on him, stay
- 13:35with him twenty four hours a day, get a couple of other men.
- 13:37It'll cost your money and get busy. Expense a count item nine two hundred
- 13:43dollars detective service. I didn't believe Frank Bauer's I didn't believe his background,
- 13:48and most of all, I didn't believe his fingerprints. Johnny Deller, this
- 14:09is Western Union, mister Della, message for you from Baltimore, Maryland.
- 14:11Okay, go ahead, received your air special regarding investigation of the Chesapeake matter.
- 14:18You've proved Frank Bowers of Denver is not John Ridden of Baltimore. Fingerprints
- 14:24don't lie. Therefore logical to believe John Ridden really did come on home.
- 14:31Your expenses are running too high. That signed Pat kellaher Universal Adjustment Bureau.
- 14:35Who should I mail this to you? Now? That's all right? Can
- 14:39I send an answer? Pat kellahare Universal Adjustment Bureau of Baltimore, Maryland.
- 14:45Fingerprints don't lie, but people do all the time or all sorts of reasons.
- 14:50It may be finished as far as your concerned, but I'm just beginning,
- 14:54Love Johnny. Expense accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Doller to the Universal
- 15:09Adjustment Bureau, Baltimore, Maryland. The following is an accounting of expenditures during
- 15:13my investigation of the Chesapeake fraud matter. I'd sent out to prove that jarn
- 15:22Reardon had not died back in nineteen fifty in a boat accident on Chesapeake Bay,
- 15:26to prove that he was still very much alive and the person of one
- 15:31Frank Bauers currently living here in Denver, Colorado. Everything all I could learn
- 15:35of the man's history, reports from his neighbors, friends, even his fingerprints,
- 15:41everything indicated he really was Frank Bauers. And yet, for some fool
- 15:45reason or other I wasn't convinced. Expense account continued, Item ten sixty three
- 15:52bucks for one overcoat. Denver can be a very cool city when the wind
- 15:56comes in from the north and it decides to snow, almost as cold as
- 16:00the damp wind off Chesapeake Bay on a certain day back in nineteen fifty.
- 16:07Hi, Hi, and George, how's it going well? I watched Bowers
- 16:11house from six last night till two this morning. He read a book last
- 16:15night in the living room. He made a phone call, and then he
- 16:18went to bed, And then I went home and went to bed. How
- 16:21many men. Have you got working? Two others beside myself, we're keeping
- 16:25an eye on Bowers around the clock. I go on again at six.
- 16:27Okay, good I don't know why, Johnny. Isn't you a guy?
- 16:30And you know it? Fingerprints proved it. We can watch him from now
- 16:33till doomsday and nothing's gonna change that. Oh look, don't you start,
- 16:37Georgie. H I got a wire from my home office this morning telling me
- 16:41to close it up and come on home. Why don't you close it up
- 16:44and come on home? I like to make go I'm in the private detective
- 16:47business, but I hate to see an old pal doing a lot of work
- 16:48on nothing. Why don't you shut up? Sure we can go on like
- 16:53this forever, can't we? Johnny? Ah, goodbye, Johnny. I
- 17:07walked around the streets of Denver, trying to enjoy the sights, but mostly
- 17:11I wasn't enjoying anything. I was thinking about the whole case from beginning to
- 17:15end, and my only reason for hanging on and being stubborn about it was
- 17:19the fact that Frank Bowers had been too anxious to cooperate, too anxious to
- 17:25help me prove so easily that he was not John ridden, and then something
- 17:29else happened. He got anxious once long. Yeah, mister dalla is Frank
- 17:34Bars, Oh hello, didn't tell me where you was stopping, phoned everywhere
- 17:38in town. I wonder how you made out made DONI yeah? With my
- 17:44fingerprints? Oh yeah, well they don't match at all. Oh then I'm
- 17:49not your man, Yes not, mister Bowers. Oh, I was just
- 17:52curious. Didn't hear from me after you took the sample of my prince.
- 17:57Oh that was pretty nice of you to help me out. How can I
- 18:00thank you? He couldn't buy me a drink if you want to. Hey,
- 18:04you're on all right Mitia's six at the ship's tavern. It was the
- 18:11voice of a confident man again, an over confident man, the kind of
- 18:15sandbags in a poker game, who knows about a boat ride and a horse
- 18:18race, and so help me. I knew I was right about him.
- 18:25Expense account of tideum eleven fourteen dollars booze for Frank Bowers and myself and the
- 18:30ship's tavern the same bar. Incidentally, we're a week before a close friend
- 18:33of the deceased John Arden had run into Bowers and sworn he was John Riddon.
- 18:38When Bars came in, he was followed by George Hanley. As per
- 18:41my instructions, I saw George pick a stool at the far end of the
- 18:45bar. Up. I suppose you'll be packing up leaving the old Male High
- 18:52City pretty quick? Now, did I say that, Frank? No?
- 18:56No, But I just suppose it, ill, don't you? Oh,
- 19:00I haven't decided yet. What do you think I should do? Huh?
- 19:06I said, what do you think I should do? How? Maybe I'm
- 19:11just kidding myself, But you don't seem like the kind of fella you should
- 19:17be somehow, I don't nah. Now, you were too nice about answering
- 19:22questions when I came out to your house the other day. Too nice about
- 19:25letting me fingerprints you so I could compare the samples with John Reardon's prints.
- 19:30Too nice about calling up and asking how it all came out? Came out
- 19:33bad? Thank you? I'm a pretty nice fella. Yeah, that's what
- 19:37the book says. Book. I had a private detective friend make one up
- 19:44on you before I even got here. Friends, enemies, money and whatnot.
- 19:48All very nice, of course, it is. You know what your
- 19:52trouble is, Dolly? You you don't trust anybody. I'm nice fella,
- 19:56and you don't trust me. You don't believe what you see, believe the
- 20:00fingerprints don't match. If that's what you mean, you're the bird. I
- 20:03don't believe. Hey, should I get sorry? If you want to,
- 20:12I'm not gonna. You know why, because I'm a nice fella. Sure
- 20:18you are, But you want to get mad when a man calls you a
- 20:21liar. You didn't I meant to. You're a liar. You know why.
- 20:27I'm not a nice fella all the time. I can't like to hitch
- 20:32you in a face or something. Right now, you're kneeling, am I.
- 20:40I think I better call up a girl I know. I see what
- 20:42she's doing for dinner. We'll see if she's got a friend. No,
- 20:45No, here too nasty friend? You said, ty auto made drink.
- 20:49I'll be back in the gyppy. He's a little drunk. Sure he is,
- 20:56George. He's also worried any particular reason for getting him that way,
- 21:00Johnny, Yes, he's using the booth in the lobby. Scoot out there
- 21:03and see if you can get a line on who he might be calling right
- 21:08A long ten minutes later, Frank Powers came back to the bar. He
- 21:12was weaving a little when he got on the stool next to me. George
- 21:15Hanley followed him back inside and took his place at the end of the bar
- 21:18again. Yeah, she's busy. Took her a long time to tell you
- 21:23that. She's a girl who takes a long time with everything. Oh what's
- 21:27your name? Man? What's your name? A gird? He dis called,
- 21:32Oh, Rading reading, But here's the Rada. Come on, drink
- 21:37up. You might have to eat with me. I don't want to drink
- 21:41to Rading. I don't want to have dinner with you. What do you
- 21:42think of that? I thought you were a nice fellow. Remember good place?
- 21:48Hey, Johnny, you may have something with this bird at that?
- 21:55How comes George? That call? He just made long distance to Baltimore?
- 21:57I got that much. He said he'd never been there. I didn't know
- 22:00anyone there. Keep an eye on his charging. You bet your pal?
- 22:11Hey, hey, Frank, Hey, Hey, look what's the matter?
- 22:14Friend? I just left you? I thought for good maw. Come on,
- 22:17I'll buy you dinner. You buy me nothing. Dalla go on back
- 22:22to Balmore. Why don't you? Why? Why don't you go back to
- 22:26Baltimore. What's that supposed to mean? Just what it means? Well,
- 22:33and maybe we'd better talk some more. Fine, my car isn't a lot
- 22:37here. Okay, you're after me, and well, let's say I met
- 22:41you yesterday to get some facts. Let's say I drank with you tonight to
- 22:45find out what kind of a guy you are. I've done most of the
- 22:48talking up to date. Now it's your turn. Well, I don't know
- 22:55whether I got anything to say to you. I'll make up your mind.
- 22:56Would you folk suppose words? Jan ridden, I'm not, but suppose I
- 23:02were. I can't tell you what a court would do about an insurance fraud.
- 23:06Na. You just a clumsy ox thumb laurn some answers, and you
- 23:10haven't got any. He'd get out. Oh he's a very handy, Phillip.
- 23:23I didn't want to interfere, Johnny, stay on him, see where
- 23:26he goes, what he does. Georgie, hurry you all right, pal
- 23:29shure, hurry. I wasn't all right at all. Frank Bauer's was not
- 23:36only big, but fast, and he caught me off guard. I went
- 23:38back through the hotel hobby up to my room and lay down on the bed
- 23:41and I waited for the phone to ring. Sooner or later it'd be George
- 23:44Hanley or Frank Bauer's tale reporting some development that had solved the whole case.
- 23:48But the phone didn't ring. Nothing happened, no one phoned, no one
- 23:52came by. I went to sleep. About one o'clock the next morning,
- 24:00George Hanley called and asked me how I was feeling after the punching session in
- 24:03the parking line. He reported that Frank Bowers had jumped in his car,

- 24:18At eight o'clock that night, I had another phone call. Hi,
- 24:22baby, this is George Hanley. How do you feel Okay? What's up,
- 24:25Georgie. I'm still keeping my eye on Frank Bowers. He's nervous,
- 24:27all right. I've been staying in the house all day. I can see
- 24:30him walking back and forth in the living room. He mustn't have smoked the
- 24:33package of cigarettes every hour as he used the phone. Yeah, yeah,
- 24:37it looks like long distance stuff again, you know. Placed the call hang
- 24:40up, then wait for the operator to call back. Possibly Baltimore again,
- 24:44possible? How about it? I'm thinking, I'm thinking, where are you?
- 24:48Right across the street from his house? Be right out. The heater
- 24:52in my rented car wasn't working that night. I remember that part very well.
- 24:56My feet and hands were numb with a ten bal of weather when I
- 24:59flicked off lights and pulled up alongside George Hanley, stationed across the street from
- 25:02Frank Bower's home. It's some weather. Yeah, how's a borer doing?
- 25:08I think he's got a visitor with him. No journey must to showed up
- 25:11while I was calling you, big guy wrapping an overcoat. I've seen him
- 25:14move around the room a couple of times, George, what's going to shake
- 25:18him up? I'm tired of all this. You think he's ridden? I
- 25:19don't know, but I want to wind it up one way or the other.
- 25:22Okay, I want to wait for his friend to leave. No,
- 25:29oh, it's a nutty thing. You're the one who's nutty. You already
- 25:33proved he isn't John ridden. That's all you wanted. I know. I
- 25:34know. Now I want to prove I'm getting old and crotchety and don't believe
- 25:37what I see in here? Beare with me, Georgie. True, you're
- 25:41crazy, but I love you. Hey, h visitors leaving make him no
- 25:47an overcoat and I had on much to go on. He's down. The
- 25:57gun of the man in the overcoat had gone off a couple of more times.
- 26:00The nearest bullet came six inches from me without my gun. I'll like
- 26:03could do was hug the ground for cover and try to stay out of his
- 26:06line of fire. The shots defened me for a moment. When my hearing
- 26:10came back, I heard someone very close to me. It was Georgie.
- 26:15He was dying. There'll be another exciting episode in our story of the Chesapeake
