- 13:23Speaker 4: that brown that you don't look very interested, which is
- 13:28Speaker 4: an old story with me, mister Gallas. W is it then?

- 13:38Speaker 4: three quarters, mister ven larger than the porter road from
- 13:41Speaker 4: Kimberly and of justice final water, that brown nay I
- 13:43Speaker 4: examine this, mister Gallows certainly does, certainly does.
- 13:47Speaker 5: Let me see that.
- 13:48Speaker 4: Have one moment, mister Brown Gallows clos hey, my father's
- 13:53Speaker 4: wedding gift to my mother. Very sentimental man. My father
- 13:56Speaker 4: is well provided that the stone mustn't be touched for
- 13:58Speaker 4: twenty five years after my mother's death. They've been a
- 14:01Speaker 4: great trialph tony gentleman, very unpredicted. Money gathers money at diamonds,
- 14:07Speaker 4: gather dust as you like it, mister Gallows.
- 14:13Speaker 7: It is quite the most supper of the imitation I
- 14:16Speaker 7: have ever seen imitation.
- 14:17Speaker 8: Say click, stop pushing, Why George, it's not genuine.
- 14:22Speaker 3: This is a justice, Gallows. I have come all the
- 14:24Speaker 3: way from on.
- 14:25Speaker 4: This is an exact copy, worthless, of course, but sufficient
- 14:29Speaker 4: for you, gentlemen to base your bid.
- 14:30Speaker 3: Done when maybe see the genuine stone.
- 14:33Speaker 4: It won't be exhibited. Then click until I get what
- 14:35Speaker 4: I consider a selling bid confirmed by the principle for
- 14:38Speaker 4: whom you're acting as agents.
- 14:39Speaker 8: I can't say, mister Gallows, I feel entirely comfortable.
- 14:42Speaker 3: I've never had my integrity question before.
- 14:44Speaker 4: No, right, I'm sorry, I have to be careful, gentlemen.
- 14:48Speaker 4: You forced me to show my hand what do you mean, sir,
- 14:52Speaker 4: that fellow queen, the detective whom I head, Miss Angel
- 14:55Speaker 4: invite a few days ago for the weekend. Actually, she
- 14:58Speaker 4: engaged him in my behalf to check up.
- 15:01Speaker 10: On you, gentlemen.
- 15:02Speaker 4: Will what does your mean? Queen came here today to
- 15:06Speaker 4: tell me the result of his investigations. He tells me
- 15:09Speaker 4: that one of you was a frog dam and pasta yes,
- 15:13Speaker 4: and in international jewel thief? Who's here with forged credentials?
- 15:18Speaker 10: Can you blame me for being careful? You should have
- 15:33Speaker 10: seen their faces.
- 15:35Speaker 4: You're so clever you think I'm not. I get a
- 15:40Speaker 4: kick out of this sort of thing, eat out smiling them.
- 15:43Speaker 4: You don't know these fellows the way I do. They're
- 15:45Speaker 4: canny trader if they think that.
- 15:47Speaker 5: But they won't this case, why.
- 15:49Speaker 4: They'll fall all over themselves proving.
- 15:51Speaker 6: They're not fakes.
- 15:52Speaker 4: Each one a rush to make his bidden present me
- 15:54Speaker 4: with confirming authority from his principle. Things are going to
- 15:57Speaker 4: hum around here, darling. And I'll bet you I get
- 16:00Speaker 4: twenty percent more for the diamonds.
- 16:03Speaker 11: Mark.
- 16:04Speaker 4: But look at this, eh, it's that child's grip of favor.
- 16:08Speaker 6: Hey, what is it?
- 16:09Speaker 5: Take it?
- 16:10Speaker 4: Readly? What's the matter? With you, wait till I spray it.
- 16:14Speaker 5: So you invented the story that one of them is
- 16:17Speaker 5: a crook? Did you one? Of course all the time
- 16:19Speaker 5: they're all honest.
- 16:21Speaker 4: I don't know what you're talking about. Yeah, where'd you
- 16:23Speaker 4: find this? Eve?
- 16:24Speaker 5: Living room?

- 16:53Speaker 5: You have another attack?
- 16:55Speaker 12: One of them intercepted the man this morning. He must
- 16:56Speaker 12: have been watching for this the letter. Maybe the rest
- 16:58Speaker 12: of the letters in the fireplace.

- 18:29Speaker 5: me Oh yes ellery, Yes.
- 18:33Speaker 3: Dad, your friend Gallows?
- 18:36Speaker 4: Gallows, Yes, what's happened?
- 18:38Speaker 3: Committed suicide?
- 18:39Speaker 4: Suicide, mark bad, Keep everything the way you found it.
- 18:44Speaker 4: I'm coming right up there. Committed bad sight unseen. He
- 18:50Speaker 4: was murdered, Nicky, come on, you're man down murder. I'm sorry, Dad,
- 19:07Speaker 4: it's murdered.
- 19:08Speaker 5: I don't know how you can say that, Eller, neither.
- 19:10Speaker 8: Do I man found hanging from a rafter and not
- 19:12Speaker 8: a clue to a second past.
- 19:13Speaker 6: Look at this rope he was hanged with.
- 19:15Speaker 8: What about it? Rope comes from this barley. It's filthy,
- 19:18Speaker 8: it's what he's phobia.
- 19:19Speaker 6: That's it, Nikki.
- 19:20Speaker 4: That Gallows suffered from a morbid fear of dirt. Now
- 19:23Speaker 4: there were two ropes in this barn, this dirty one
- 19:26Speaker 4: here and that clean one hanging over there. Even approaching death,
- 19:29Speaker 4: Gallows would have used the clean one if he was
- 19:31Speaker 4: going to hang himself. All right, Gallows was strung up, Daddy,
- 19:34Speaker 4: and almost certainly by one of those three diamond buyers.
- 19:37Speaker 3: The impost impastor what impostor?
- 19:39Speaker 4: No doubt about it, Nikki, No doubt about what I'm
- 19:41Speaker 4: afraid we're a little ahead of you on this one. Dad.
- 19:44Speaker 4: Are Van Cleek, Das and Duff Brown still here? Yeah?
- 19:47Speaker 6: I better hold them here for a while and keep
- 19:49Speaker 6: them out of my way.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Why what are you going to go? Dad? You wouldn't
- 19:51Speaker 4: believe me if I told you I came?
- 19:54Speaker 3: Are you man? One of you watched the body the
- 19:56Speaker 3: rest of your current Ellari?
- 19:58Speaker 5: What are you going to do?
- 20:00Speaker 6: Mister Gallows?
- 20:00Speaker 4: Over? Uh?
- 20:01Speaker 6: Turn around?
- 20:02Speaker 4: Nikki?
- 20:02Speaker 5: Oh what are you looking for?
- 20:05Speaker 4: Gallows sent me a copy of the map? Where would
- 20:08Speaker 4: he keep the original? I'd say it's even Betty carried
- 20:11Speaker 4: it on him, Nikki?
- 20:11Speaker 5: In a secret pocket?
- 20:13Speaker 4: Yes? Or here?
- 20:15Speaker 6: What leather pouch around his waist next to the skin?
- 20:18Speaker 5: He is it in there?
- 20:20Speaker 4: Oh?
- 20:20Speaker 6: No, it's empty.
- 20:23Speaker 5: His killer took the map?
- 20:24Speaker 4: Yes, but how would the killer know about the map? Nikki?
- 20:29Speaker 6: Do you think you can stand a look at Gallow's face?
- 20:32Speaker 3: Well?
- 20:35Speaker 4: Awfully dead looking and dirty?
- 20:38Speaker 5: See here, Nikki, dirt around his mouth?
- 20:41Speaker 4: I think our diamond hunter tortured Gallows into telling his secret.
- 20:45Speaker 5: By putting dirt in his mouth.
- 20:47Speaker 4: His phobia really nasty, Nicky?
- 20:51Speaker 5: Why are you looking at the copy of the map?
- 20:52Speaker 5: Or killer has the original must have dug up the diamond.
- 20:57Speaker 4: Let's take a look anyway, shall we?
- 21:08Speaker 8: Maps very pleasure? Why didn't he puts the blasted ball
- 21:12Speaker 8: in a bank.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Or where it? For long?
- 21:13Speaker 5: I think this is exciting, There.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Is something gold buggish about it, NICKI. Well let's see.
- 21:19Speaker 4: Uh huh, I think this is it?
- 21:21Speaker 6: Where this tree?
- 21:22Speaker 4: Dad? It's our starting place here. Look at Gallow's map.
- 21:27Speaker 5: Yes, so this tree go go south and then due west,
- 21:31Speaker 5: and X marks the spot wonderful due south due west?
- 21:36Speaker 8: How far?
- 21:36Speaker 3: I says, ten on the first leg and ten on
- 21:38Speaker 3: the second? Ten mile?
- 21:40Speaker 5: I don't be sarcastic instructor, not miles or feet or
- 21:42Speaker 5: inches either, because then it wouldn't be far enough to
- 21:45Speaker 5: cross that brook. And the south leg on the map
- 21:46Speaker 5: does cross the brook.
- 21:47Speaker 4: Right, NICKI? Therefore it must mean yards, Dad. Let me
- 21:51Speaker 4: have that compass and yardstick with you. Yeah, yo, sigh?
- 21:55Speaker 6: Which is this way?
- 21:57Speaker 4: One yard? Who? Hey?
- 22:02Speaker 5: Look at this, Nikki, I sort of trail in the grass.
- 22:04Speaker 3: Al ray, See this trail I saw, Dad? I'm right
- 22:07Speaker 3: on it.
- 22:07Speaker 5: Hell has been here before us, didn't I tell you?
- 22:09Speaker 5: Ellery try it?
- 22:10Speaker 3: Come on, Nick?
- 22:10Speaker 6: Here?
- 22:12Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 22:12Speaker 3: Watch it? Brother?
- 22:14Speaker 5: Oh gosh, I'm getting all wet ary razor.
- 22:18Speaker 6: It's a again, and this is the end of the
- 22:20Speaker 6: ten yards dad, But.
- 22:22Speaker 5: The trail keeps going allery in the same direction.
- 22:24Speaker 4: Uh huh.
- 22:25Speaker 6: Another yard?
- 22:25Speaker 3: Keller went eleven yards do south? Yeah, and then he
- 22:29Speaker 3: turned west two three or in parallel with.
- 22:35Speaker 5: Your rule a yard away. I don't understand how far
- 22:38Speaker 5: is the map that you've got to go west?
- 22:39Speaker 4: Another ten yards? Nine? Ten?
- 22:44Speaker 3: But the killer's trail keeps going so here go catch
- 22:51Speaker 3: I know that, yeah, exactly again he went eleven yards
- 22:55Speaker 3: instead of ten. Honey, Wait what is it, dad?
- 22:58Speaker 4: Lray come here on this spot, the end of the
- 23:01Speaker 4: ten yards west, so we don't lose it.
- 23:02Speaker 5: X marks the spot. Oh does it?
- 23:06Speaker 4: What that look here? Somebody dug here then filled up
- 23:10Speaker 4: the hole.
- 23:10Speaker 3: He found it. So that map we've been following must
- 23:13Speaker 3: be wrong.
- 23:14Speaker 5: John, We sure it must be wrong. After all, he
- 23:17Speaker 5: had the.
- 23:17Speaker 8: Original Gallas must have deliberately falsified the figures on the
- 23:20Speaker 8: map he sand too well.
- 23:21Speaker 4: I doubt it. Maybe the killer didn't find the diamond.
- 23:24Speaker 6: Maybe he was wrong, and we're right.
- 23:26Speaker 3: Only one way to find out, son.
- 23:29Speaker 4: Uh huh. Mickey had me that shovel.
- 23:44Speaker 5: When you strike water ellery let me know.
- 23:46Speaker 3: No sign of anything yet, not yet?
- 23:49Speaker 4: Do wait.
- 23:53Speaker 8: Here it is the diamond.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Oh, the metal box pretty well chewed up too, Dad,
- 24:00Speaker 3: give me your hand up.
- 24:03Speaker 5: Just a rusty old box.
- 24:05Speaker 4: I think it's so eating away it'll give without much trouble.
- 24:13Speaker 5: Dame Oh smokes, is that real?
- 24:22Speaker 4: It's real, nicky.
- 24:24Speaker 8: They killer knocked off old gallows for nothing, dugg in
- 24:28Speaker 8: the wrong place.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Yeah well, now let's go back to the house and
- 24:34Speaker 4: finish this off. And there you have our mystery for
- 24:53Speaker 4: the night. Nikki, would you please introduce our very lovely
- 24:56Speaker 4: and charming guest armchair detective for our listeners.
- 25:00Speaker 5: Ladies and gentlemen, meet Miss Peggy Lee, the popular vocalist
- 25:04Speaker 5: who has made Maniana and her Capitol Records album Rendezvous
- 25:08Speaker 5: with Peggy Lee, both of which have set the public
- 25:11Speaker 5: humming and dancing.
- 25:12Speaker 4: Welcome Peggy to the armchair. Say you know, it's too
- 25:16Speaker 4: bad that we don't have a little more time. Then
- 25:18Speaker 4: we could hear you sing one of the songs from
- 25:19Speaker 4: that Rendezvous with Peggy Lee album, which you.
- 25:22Speaker 5: Did in cooperation with your husband, Dave barber.
- 25:25Speaker 11: Well ellery Right now, I'm too nervous to sing anything.
- 25:29Speaker 11: I've never been a detective before in this case tonight
- 25:31Speaker 11: as missing the dominadd you know what I mean.
- 25:34Speaker 4: I'm afraid you're just jesting Peggy. Anyway, what about our case?
- 25:39Speaker 4: Tell me? Have you figured out who hanged Mark Gallows? Well?
- 25:43Speaker 11: I couldn't say exactly. I couldn't exactly name one person.
- 25:47Speaker 11: But I think that Eve Angel had something to do
- 25:50Speaker 11: with it because she knew all about his sphere of dirt,
- 25:53Speaker 11: and I think that she probably was the only one
- 25:56Speaker 11: who could intercept the letter that was partly burned, and
- 25:59Speaker 11: also that she was the only one who would know
- 26:01Speaker 11: about the map, and he may have told her the
- 26:04Speaker 11: wrong directions.
- 26:07Speaker 5: Yeah, I think so.
- 26:08Speaker 4: That's a very interesting refection. And thank you very much,
- 26:11Speaker 4: Peggy Lee. We'll find out in just a moment if
- 26:13Speaker 4: your solution is correct. Now here's Paul Masterson.
- 26:18Speaker 2: What's the picture for your pocketbook in five, ten, fifteen years.
- 26:22Speaker 2: It depends in large part upon the use to which
- 26:24Speaker 2: you put your money today. Buying United States Security bonds
- 26:28Speaker 2: today serves two important purposes. It takes out of circulation
- 26:31Speaker 2: money which would compete with somebody else's for scarce commodities.
- 26:35Speaker 2: The second important reason for buying bonds is to make
- 26:38Speaker 2: sound investments your plans for the future, whether you want
- 26:42Speaker 2: something set aside to make leisure time enjoyable, whether you
- 26:45Speaker 2: want to establish a business of your own or send
- 26:47Speaker 2: your children to college, there is no better way to
- 26:49Speaker 2: ensure those plans than to buy United States Security bonds today.
- 27:08Speaker 3: I will not be held indefinitely. I'm a subject of
- 27:11Speaker 3: his magazine.
- 27:13Speaker 4: You give me a headache that he was the kind
- 27:15Speaker 4: to me, Miss Angel, Please, and.
- 27:18Speaker 3: What's this nonsense about murder? Inspector Queen? Yes, the man
- 27:21Speaker 3: hanked him. Tell you said so yourself, sir, Yes, I did,
- 27:26Speaker 3: didn't I? Mister Darres, you people all throw.
- 27:30Speaker 4: All right, go ahead. Unfortunately, Gallows murderer made a mistake.
- 27:36Speaker 4: Mister Gallows sent me a copy of that map, and
- 27:38Speaker 4: by following its directions exactly, I located the spot where
- 27:41Speaker 4: he buried the Gallows diamond. How did the killer miss it? Well?
- 27:45Speaker 4: What were the directions to go ten something due south
- 27:49Speaker 4: and then ten something due west. We assumed that the
- 27:52Speaker 4: figure ten referred to yards, as they did, since by
- 27:56Speaker 4: going ten yards south and then ten yards west we
- 27:59Speaker 4: did find the diamond. Then the killer did not take
- 28:03Speaker 4: the figure ten to mean yards or he'd have found
- 28:05Speaker 4: the right spot. Two, he took it to mean a
- 28:08Speaker 4: different unit of measurement. Nikki, Exactly how far did the
- 28:12Speaker 4: killer measure.
- 28:13Speaker 5: Eleven yards instead of ten?
- 28:14Speaker 4: Each way he reads the figure ten and measures off
- 28:18Speaker 4: eleven yards. Now, how can that be only if in
- 28:21Speaker 4: the kind of measure he was using ten units equal
- 28:24Speaker 4: eleven yards? And which unit of measurement is that the meter?
- 28:29Speaker 4: That's right, meters exceed yards in exactly the proportion of
- 28:33Speaker 4: eleven to ten.
- 28:34Speaker 6: But that gives us our criminal?
- 28:36Speaker 3: Oh, I do not see that creek. You're not alone.
- 28:38Speaker 4: How does that give you your criminal?
- 28:40Speaker 5: Mister Creem.
- 28:41Speaker 4: It tells me, mister Dust that the killer of Gallows
- 28:44Speaker 4: thinks in terms not of yards, but of meters. Could
- 28:48Speaker 4: that be Miss Angel, No, it couldn't. Miss Angel is
- 28:52Speaker 4: an American and we use yards not meters.
- 28:55Speaker 3: So do we in Britain's the queens.
- 28:57Speaker 4: That's quite true, mister Duff Brown, And so do the Hindus,
- 29:01Speaker 4: especially one as anglicized as mister Reginald does. Fortunately for me,
- 29:07Speaker 4: but almost all of continental Europe uses the metric system, including.
- 29:12Speaker 6: Of course the Dutch.
- 29:14Speaker 5: Hillary.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Stop it. You have the advantage of me in head inspect.
- 29:35Speaker 4: And there, ladies and gentlemen, you have the solution to
- 29:38Speaker 4: our mystery. Thank you Peggy Lee for serving as our
- 29:40Speaker 4: guest armchair detective this evening. As momentos of the occasion,
- 29:44Speaker 4: I have for you a copy of my latest mystery anthology,
- 29:47Speaker 4: The Queen's Awards nineteen forty seven, and a subscription to
- 29:51Speaker 4: Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine.
- 29:54Speaker 6: And here's mister.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Masterson panting, mister Q about next week.
- 29:58Speaker 4: I mean suppose that I give you a good reason
- 30:01Speaker 4: to pant, Pau, I want to meet a movie star.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Are you kidding? Where where is she? Ellery?
- 30:07Speaker 4: Nicky mind? Stepping over here? Missus Porter Paul, And ladies
- 30:15Speaker 4: and gentlemen, I want you to meet Mickey Porter starlet.
