- 0:00Speaker 1: Where is he who was born King of the Jews?
- 0:03Speaker 1: For we saw his star when it rose and have
- 0:06Speaker 1: come to worship him. Matthew 2.2 Dear Lord Jesus, lead us,
- 0:14Speaker 1: like the wise men, to seek you with eager hearts.
- 0:19Speaker 1: May we be drawn to your light, following the guidance
- 0:23Speaker 1: of your Spirit, and be filled with a longing to
- 0:26Speaker 1: worship you in spirit and in truth. in this season
- 0:32Speaker 1: and always, help us to focus our hearts on you,
- 0:37Speaker 1: the King of Kings, the one who came to bring salvation, love,
- 0:42Speaker 1: and eternal life. May we approach you with reverence, humility,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and joy, recognizing the immense gift of your presence in
- 0:53Speaker 1: our lives. Thank you for the example of the wise
- 0:58Speaker 1: men who teach us to seek, to follow, and to
- 1:03Speaker 1: adore you with unwavering devotion. In the precious name of Jesus,
- 1:09Speaker 1: the bright and morning star, we pray.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Amen.
- 1:14Speaker 3: After dedicating Jesus in the temple, Mary and Joseph departed
- 1:17Speaker 3: back to Bethlehem. They remained there in a small home
- 1:21Speaker 3: near the very inn that showed them mercy. It was
- 1:24Speaker 3: a sanctuary where they could nurture their child and build
- 1:27Speaker 3: a place of love, tenderness and honor towards the Lord.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Joseph worked in town, thriving despite his family's rejection. They
- 1:36Speaker 3: remained there while Mary recovered, awaiting God's next prompting. In
- 1:41Speaker 3: the quiet bliss of Bethlehem, with its green rolling hills
- 1:44Speaker 3: and lush open fields, they found solace and strength, their
- 1:49Speaker 3: hearts filled with the knowledge that they were a part
- 1:51Speaker 3: of something greater than themselves. They were the guardians of
- 1:55Speaker 3: a promise, the bearers of a hope that would ignite
- 1:58Speaker 3: the world. And in the soft cooing of their baby,
- 2:02Speaker 3: they saw the reflection of eternity.
- 2:05Speaker 2: As night draped over the.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Horizon, Joseph and Mary cradled the babe in their arms
- 2:09Speaker 3: as they looked out at the stars. A peculiar star
- 2:13Speaker 3: fixed above them like a guardian angel. Its light was
- 2:16Speaker 3: radiating brighter than the others, pulsing with light like a
- 2:20Speaker 3: beating heart. Little did they know.
- 2:22Speaker 2: This star was.
- 2:23Speaker 3: A signal beckoning a group of noblemen from the east.
- 2:27Speaker 3: They were masters of astronomy and prophecy. Some called them alchemists.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Others called them kings. Legends would herald them as magi.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:41Speaker 4: Bible in a Year podcast. This episode introduces us to
- 2:45Speaker 4: the magi. Many movies and dramatizations have been made around
- 2:49Speaker 4: these mysterious biblical figures. Who were they? and how did
- 2:53Speaker 4: they come to discover Jesus? While none of us can
- 2:56Speaker 4: be certain, many historical and biblical arrows point us in
- 3:00Speaker 4: the right direction. The term magi, magoi, in ancient Greek,
- 3:06Speaker 4: has been the source of misconceptions and myths. These travelers
- 3:10Speaker 4: were not kings, but wise men, astronomers, possibly part of
- 3:14Speaker 4: a larger company, and arriving likely months or even years
- 3:18Speaker 4: after Jesus' birth. In ancient times, the term encompassed a
- 3:22Speaker 4: wide range of individuals interested in dreams, astrology, alchemy, magic,
- 3:28Speaker 4: and prophecies. The Magi's connection with astronomy and their pursuit
- 3:33Speaker 4: of knowledge transcending earthly wisdom uniquely positions them in the
- 3:37Speaker 4: biblical narrative. Being from the East, the Magi may have
- 3:41Speaker 4: been among Jews exiled centuries earlier, or at least influenced
- 3:45Speaker 4: by them. Their understanding of the Messiah's promise indicates an
- 3:50Speaker 4: alignment with Jewish traditions and prophecies. Some have surmised that
- 3:54Speaker 4: these wise men were part of a similar order to
- 3:57Speaker 4: Daniel when he was captive in Babylon. The blend of
- 4:01Speaker 4: worldly wisdom and spiritual expectation made them perfect seekers for
- 4:06Speaker 4: the Christ child. Historical accounts tell us that the expectation
- 4:11Speaker 4: of a Messiah or great ruler from Judea was widespread
- 4:15Speaker 4: during this time. Roman historians Suetonius and Tacitus noted the
- 4:20Speaker 4: prevailing belief that rulers from Judea were destined to rise
- 4:23Speaker 4: up against Rome. This expectation set the stage for the
- 4:27Speaker 4: Magi's journey. Though the Magi were most likely not kings,
- 4:32Speaker 4: the tradition that portrays them as such can be traced
- 4:35Speaker 4: back to early Christian thinkers like Tertullian. Influenced by Old
- 4:39Speaker 4: Testament passages predicting that kings would worship the Messiah, the
- 4:43Speaker 4: myth evolved, even assigning them names. Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Today's episode will follow that tradition, focusing on three wise
- 4:54Speaker 4: men instead of dozens. Today's story highlights the star hovering
- 4:58Speaker 4: above Bethlehem. The star the wise men followed to find Jesus.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Many theories about the star's nature exist, ranging from planetary
- 5:08Speaker 4: conjunctions to supernovas or comets. Regardless of its origin, the
- 5:13Speaker 4: star was a divine guide, meeting the astronomers in their medium.
- 5:18Speaker 4: God has a beautiful way of meeting people where they are.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Some even believe this star fulfilled an obscure prophecy in
- 5:25Speaker 4: Numbers 24, verse 17. A star shall come out of Jacob. Regardless,
- 5:32Speaker 4: the star was Christ's star, a moving sign pointing others
- 5:36Speaker 4: to him. Let's follow that star together. Afterward, we'll unpack
- 5:41Speaker 4: deep truths from the stories.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Past the vast deserts of the Far East, tucked between
- 5:49Speaker 3: ancient kingdoms and new empires, was a place untouched by time. There,
- 5:56Speaker 3: in a palace hewn from ivory and cedar, lived three
- 5:59Speaker 3: noble scholars known as the Magi. They were rulers over
- 6:04Speaker 3: a secret order, descendants of the exiled Jews who remained
- 6:09Speaker 3: in the Babylonian Empire. Their names were Kaspar, Melchior, and Belshazzar. Caspar,
- 6:17Speaker 3: the eldest, was an ancient astronomer whose wisdom was sought
- 6:21Speaker 3: by kings and queens. Weathered by age, his eyes held
- 6:25Speaker 3: a spark that transcended his years. Melchior was a philosopher.
- 6:30Speaker 2: And a mathematician.
- 6:31Speaker 3: His mind, sharp and unerring, was always searching for the
- 6:35Speaker 3: elusive truth behind all things. Belshazzar was an alchemist, a
- 6:40Speaker 3: master of transformation. and a keeper of secrets that danced
- 6:44Speaker 3: at the edge of the mystical. Together they were masters
- 6:48Speaker 3: of the stars, scholars knowledgeable of ancient prophecies, and men
- 6:53Speaker 3: of science and intrigue. Their days were filled with steadying
- 6:57Speaker 3: the skies, unraveling mysteries, and pursuing knowledge that had slipped
- 7:02Speaker 3: through the fingers of time. The order of the Magi
- 7:06Speaker 3: was mysterious, wealthy, and independent of any ruling nation or
- 7:11Speaker 3: cultural creed. They were diverse, and their only loyalty was
- 7:15Speaker 3: to the relentless pursuit of wisdom, truth, and knowledge. Nights
- 7:21Speaker 3: were often a time of reflection and debate for the
- 7:24Speaker 3: three wise men. In the heart of their observatory, surrounded
- 7:28Speaker 3: by scrolls, maps, and ancient texts, they would gather around
- 7:32Speaker 3: a flickering fire to discuss life's most profound quandaries. Together,
- 7:38Speaker 3: they cut the silence of the night with their rigorous
- 7:40Speaker 3: debate and inspired rhetoric. On one such night, as the
- 7:45Speaker 3: Magi debated the nature of existence and destiny, the universe
- 7:50Speaker 3: unveiled its most profound secret. Melchior's voice, musical and resonant,
- 7:57Speaker 3: filled the room. What is fate, if not the tapestry
- 8:02Speaker 3: woven by our choices? Are we not the authors of fate?
- 8:06Speaker 3: Does not every decision we make add another thread to
- 8:11Speaker 3: our destiny? Mmm, fate, Casper mused.
- 8:15Speaker 5: Fate is the path we walk, guided by the stars.
- 8:20Speaker 5: It is a predestined path that we choose to walk in.
- 8:25Speaker 5: Fate is like a mighty current that pulls us. We
- 8:29Speaker 5: can swim against it, or allow its pull to lead
- 8:33Speaker 5: us towards our destiny.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Belshazzar's eyes twinkled.
- 8:38Speaker 2: You say fate is a path that's set for us
- 8:41Speaker 2: by the stars themselves, and yet the stars themselves are
- 8:46Speaker 2: guided by something greater. Is there not something or someone
- 8:52Speaker 2: greater than the stars? Perhaps it is God their maker,
- 8:56Speaker 2: and therefore the author of fate.
- 8:59Speaker 3: Their eyes turned skyward, where the stars held court, each
- 9:04Speaker 3: a story in the grand saga of existence. Their philosophical
- 9:09Speaker 3: meandering was a nightly occurrence. Together, they searched the stars
- 9:13Speaker 3: and scrolls, unraveling the secrets of the universe themselves. Their
- 9:18Speaker 3: gaze was always upward, not just at the stars, but
- 9:22Speaker 3: at the one who created them. Although they were worldly men,
- 9:25Speaker 3: indoctrinated by ancient mysticism and alchemy, they had always maintained
- 9:30Speaker 3: ties to their lineage, the Hebrew exiles taken from Babylon.
- 9:35Speaker 3: In fact, the three men were believed to be direct
- 9:38Speaker 3: descendants of Daniel himself. The three scholars gazed at the stars,
- 9:44Speaker 3: recording anomalies and mapping constellations. It was then that it appeared.
- 9:50Speaker 3: A mysterious star hovered in the distance. Its light was
- 9:54Speaker 3: vibrant with a silvery blue hue. It was unlike anything
- 9:58Speaker 3: they had seen before. The room fell into a hushed silence.
- 10:02Speaker 3: The fires crackled now at distant murmur.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Do you see it?
- 10:06Speaker 3: Kaspar whispered, his voice tinged with awe. Belshazzar nodded, his
- 10:11Speaker 3: eyes wide. Yes, it seems to be fixed in one space.
- 10:15Speaker 3: How strange. It is hovering over the region of Judea.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Belshazzar's heart pounded.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Could it be?
- 10:23Speaker 3: His hands shook as he ran down the coiled staircase
- 10:25Speaker 3: to the library. The library was vast and filled with
- 10:28Speaker 3: members of the Order. His students were awake, steadying at
- 10:32Speaker 3: their respective desks.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Bring me the Law of Moses!
- 10:35Speaker 3: Belshazzar commanded.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Bring me the scroll!
- 10:38Speaker 3: A student handed him the scroll of Moses, and he
- 10:40Speaker 3: darted back up the stairs.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Here we are!
- 10:43Speaker 3: Belshazzar said with labored breath, spreading the scroll on the table. Look!
- 10:48Speaker 3: He traced his fingers to the Book of Numbers, where
- 10:51Speaker 3: an obscure passage came to light. A star shall come
- 10:54Speaker 3: out of Jacob. A scepter shall rise out of Israel,
- 10:59Speaker 3: Melchior read aloud. Many believed that the coming of the
- 11:02Speaker 3: Messiah would be heralded by a star over Israel. The
- 11:06Speaker 3: three of them looked towards the horizon. A profound understanding
- 11:10Speaker 3: settled over them. They were being called upon to bear
- 11:13Speaker 3: witness to something greater than themselves. We must go, Melchior
- 11:17Speaker 3: said with glee. The King of the Jews has come!
- 11:21Speaker 1: What did I tell you?
- 11:22Speaker 3: Caspar exclaimed.
- 11:24Speaker 5: Perhaps fate can be found in the stars after all.
- 11:27Speaker 3: The room fell into a deep and contemplative silence, each
- 11:31Speaker 3: man lost in his thoughts, feeling the weight of destiny
- 11:35Speaker 3: upon them. The following days were a flurry of activity.
- 11:39Speaker 3: They informed their students, servants, and fellow magi, all equally
- 11:43Speaker 3: captivated by the significance of the star. The assembly of
- 11:47Speaker 3: the caravan was a task that required meticulous planning and preparation.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Treasures were gathered, gifts fit for a king, packed with
- 11:57Speaker 3: great care and purpose. Gold stored in chests of cypress
- 12:01Speaker 3: and bronze, frankincense held in jars of glass blown by
- 12:05Speaker 3: Egyptian craftsmen, and myrrh held in linen bags. Camels were
- 12:11Speaker 3: laden with supplies, tents were rolled, and scrolls were carefully stowed.
- 12:16Speaker 3: The scholars, servants, and students worked in unison, their actions
- 12:20Speaker 3: guided by a sense of higher purpose. As the day
- 12:23Speaker 3: of departure arrived, the three magi stood overlooking their assembled caravan,
- 12:28Speaker 3: A procession that stretched and wound like a river through
- 12:31Speaker 3: the desert. Casper's voice was.
- 12:33Speaker 5: Thick with emotion. We don't even know what we're looking for.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Melchior nodded. Yes, we are leaving with many questions. My
- 12:43Speaker 3: aim is to return with answers. Belshazzar looked to the
- 12:47Speaker 3: west where the star beckoned.
- 12:49Speaker 2: The road will be long, my brothers. We will have
- 12:52Speaker 2: plenty of time to ask questions.
- 12:55Speaker 3: With a final look at their home, they mounted their
- 12:57Speaker 3: camels and signaled the caravan to move. As they ventured
- 13:01Speaker 3: into the desert, the star, their constant guide, they knew
- 13:05Speaker 3: that their journey was about more than miles and landscapes.
- 13:09Speaker 3: They were traveling into the heart of a mystery, guided
- 13:12Speaker 3: by faith and bound by destiny.
- 13:16Speaker 4: The Magi's journey is a profound metaphor for our spiritual journeys.
- 13:24Speaker 4: They were seekers guided by the world's wisdom, but attuned
- 13:27Speaker 4: to the whispers of the divine. Wisdom without faith can
- 13:31Speaker 4: be empty and faith without wisdom can be blind. The
- 13:35Speaker 4: Magi's wisdom led them to the star, but their faith
- 13:39Speaker 4: guided them to the Messiah. Like them, We are called
- 13:43Speaker 4: to blend our knowledge and understanding with a deep faith
- 13:46Speaker 4: in God. God has this wonderful way of using what's
- 13:50Speaker 4: around us to draw us to himself. For Mary, it
- 13:54Speaker 4: was a visitation from Gabriel. For Joseph, it was a dream.
- 13:58Speaker 4: For the shepherds, it was an angelic choir. For these magi,
- 14:02Speaker 4: it was an anomaly in the constellations. God is not
- 14:10Speaker 4: confined to one method of divine intervention. Romans 1, verse
- 14:14Speaker 4: 20 tells us that God's divine nature is revealed through creation.
- 14:19Speaker 4: Although outside the Jewish bubble of Israel, these magi were
- 14:23Speaker 4: met by God and responded to his prompting. The magi's
- 14:27Speaker 4: response was immediate and decisive when they discovered the star.
- 14:32Speaker 4: They embarked on a difficult journey, guided by a star,
- 14:35Speaker 4: not fully comprehending what awaited them. This teaches us the
- 14:39Speaker 4: value of obedience and trust in God's calling, even when
- 14:43Speaker 4: the path is uncertain. May the star that guided the
- 14:47Speaker 4: Magi also light our way, leading us to the one
- 14:51Speaker 4: who is wisdom incarnate, the Word made flesh, and love personified.
- 14:57Speaker 4: May we, with them, proclaim, We have seen this star
- 15:01Speaker 4: in the east and have come to worship you. Join
- 15:05Speaker 4: us for our next episode as the Magi arrive in
- 15:07Speaker 4: Judea to meet King Herod, the Tetrarch and ruler of
- 15:11Speaker 4: the region. Unbeknownst to these Magi, their arrival will be
- 15:15Speaker 4: the first event in a chain of unfortunate and evil acts.
